editor Change is in the air! Can you feel it? A new change starts with July 13 – August 1st, 2010, to be exact. These are the new dates of the California State Fair. Traditionally, our State Fair was held each August.

Junior exhibitors scheduled those dates into their calendars for buying projects and setting goals to compete at the Cal Expo in Sacramento.

When the date change was announced, everyone had to regroup and adjust their plans or programs. Breeding dates were moved up for project animals that would be the right age and weight, animals were purchased earlier to meet ownership requirements, plus plans and goals for the summer show were changed accordingly. The tradition of the California State Fair will be upheld once again, competitions will be intense, great kids, good animals and fun times will be seen from the first day until the last day.

Moving the dates of the California State Fair has also changed my issues of the Pacific Showcase. My “State Fair Issue” has always been the August/September magazine. This year I am publishing two state fair issues. This June/July magazine will focus on our state fair and my second state fair issue (the August/September issue) will go out to state fairs throughout the western states.

I am still finding it hard to believe that summer is already here. Where did January through May disappear to? Maybe one reason I feel this way, is because of the amount of rain and cool weather we have had in these later months. I am not complaining about all the wonderful rain we had! Every time it dried out a little and it seemed it was time for the weeds to quit growing, another shower would roar through, and those weeds would send out another whole crop of green shoots. I don’t know about your part of the country, but around here, I don’t think I have ever seen thistles so tall! Many people I talk to tell me they have so much more grass in their pastures than they have had in many – many years, and boy, does that make you feel positive! With the abundance of grass, and brush, and weeds, we also need to be aware that there is a lot of fuel for fires to burn. I urge every one to get prepared.

Make fire breaks around your perimeters, clear brush and weeds if you can, have a ready source of water, and have a plan for what to do if a fire does break out near you. Definitely don’t forget to plan for your animals too. Make sure everyone in your family knows what to do in case of the fire. And be careful when operating equipment near dry grass. I know some people who always have a few buckets of water handy with some rags in them. If a fire starts while they are doing something, they have a quick source of water to quickly put out the flames. If you have sprayers or tanker trucks, keep them filled so you are prepared for any emergency.

Time does fly, and I cherish the memories of all these moments. I hope you all take the time to reflect on the memories you have made, and enjoy them too.

lows their gut to get back in order plus prevents them from drinking or eating so much they gorge themselves and subsequently develop a scour situation from a “sour gut”. If it is hot during this pulling of weight, make sure the animal is given plenty of electrolytes in their water to help them replenish lost nutrients.

I decided to focus on a subject that is more reflective of the time of year when the magazine comes out. I want to address caring for your animal during the fair especially during the summer months when it can be extremely hot and uncomfortable. Most beef cattle showmen are trying all summer to grow hair on their project, using fans, misters, cooling units, rinsing multiple times per day, etc.

The goal is to keep the animal cool and comfortable which hopefully promotes a better hair coat and also a consistent appetite.

The problem that occurs is when you take that animal from the home environment and go to the fair where it becomes hot and uncomfortable. This is compounded with steers, especially if they are hairy and we are trying to pull some weight, this becomes a real risk for dehydration and problems regaining any appetite.

The major problem of cattle getting over heated usually revolves around show day especially if the show is large in size or the show ring and makeup area is poorly ventilated. We usually have a “butt fan” near the fitting area and as soon as I can I will place it so that it blows on the animals head. This allows it to stay cooled down as much as possible and doesn’t affect the rest of the fitting process. It is very hard to use glue when you have a turbo fan right behind you. I will always have a spray bottle filled with absorbine liniment and another with alcohol; I really like using 99% alcohol for this. If the animal is hot before going in the ring or coming out, I will spray them with liniment and alcohol under their brisket, under their front legs at their chest floor and under their belly. This allows for rapid cooling as both products evaporate quickly and give that cool feeling. If you come out and they still can’t cool down, then you can use an ice pack from Sullivan’s that needs to be pre-frozen before you use it. You just strap it on their neck and it’s a great method in cooling them down when it’s extremely hot or your cattle are real hairy or both. If you are from Bakersfield or more specifically “Pumpkin Center”, then you also know the cheaper method that is just as effective. We will soak several towels in an ice chest and use them to wrap around the neck or also hold it on their brisket. You can also place that cool wet towel under the tail near the twist, but it needs to be “wrung out” so the water doesn’t affect your hair.

The first situation to address is the setup at fair time using fans and if available misters. There are many ways to arrange your fans; I think the most important is to create an air flow that can reach their heads not so much on the bodies. If you can keep their heads cooled down the rest of the animal can help stay cool as well. The optimum would be both air flow on their head and from behind on the body, but availability of power can reduce your options. Placing a mister on the fans is a great way to reduce that air temperature and keep a comfortable environment as long as it doesn’t create a large wet mess in your bedding.

On those real hot days you need to offer cattle water several times per day so they can rehydrate and attempt to stay cooled down. This also regulates their gut and keeps them on feed. I don’t know anyone who prefers to drink less water or only twice per day on those especially hot days. If it is temps that seem extreme you may need to rinse your animal several times during the day to help them regulate that body temp.

I am sharing this because it is important for all of us as exhibitors to keep our animals cool and comfortable especially as we view showing livestock as a method to educate the public. When we travel to shows in the summer this is always a problem for our cattle, whether it’s a national junior show, California State Fair or our county fair. There are very few places that are cooler than San Luis Obispo in the summer and most are significantly warmer, so we have had to develop a plan to accommodate the adverse situations. If we are pulling weight on steers by holding water and feed for 12 hours or so prior to weigh in, we will gradually fill them back up after weighing. This means that I will water them every 1 -1/2 hours with ¼-1/2 bucket of water plus a ¼ of their normal ration and allow them to eat some hay such as grass or oat hay. This al-

Hatfield, the Rainmaker but not enough to do much good. At Christmas there was no green feed for the cattle and a lot of the water holes had dried up. It was dry all over the country.

One of the favorite tales told by my grandfather was about Hatfield the Rainmaker and the flood of 1916 in San Diego. Here is another of Mom’s Memories. — Kathleen Wood Vieira

“In 1916, the City of San Diego contracted with Charles Hatfield for $10,000 to set up his rain making equipment to do something to make it rain. I don’t know what he used. Maybe he was just a good predictor, but in January it started to rain and it just didn’t stop. Hardly a dam in the county that didn’t go out. Railroad bridges washed out.

Hatfield, the Rainmaker

In 1915, the fall season in the coastal communities of Northern San Diego County had been dry and hot. It had been ideal for the harvest of barley and lima beans. Now that the harvest was completed, the farm families could relax and prepare for the end of harvest barbeque at the Olivenhain Hall. Beef was wrapped in clean muslin and then in wet gunny sacks and placed in a pit on a bed of red hot coals. The pit was covered with a sheet metal panels.

The pit was covered with a layer of dirt which would not let the heat escape. At noon, the pit would be uncovered and the delicious beef ready to serve. Beans simmered in huge pots over wood fires; German sausages popped and sizzled in large skillets. Ripe red tomatoes, fresh off the vine were sliced and served on large platters. Pickles and olives preserved during the summer garnished the meat.

“Water came through the flat here at the home place. I had a few horses out in the flat, but they were pretty good swimmers and made it out. The cows were all on high ground, but the chicken house had six feet of water in it. We had an old sailor working for us and he said, ‘You could sail a battleship on that.’

“We had a lot of trouble with our dairy. Mud all over. We lost our dairy license because we couldn’t keep it clean. The county authorities came to the place and took my father to San Diego and were going to put him in jail if he didn’t clean it up. Mr. Haige from Haige’s Dairy who bought our milk and cream talked to the authorities and told them it was beyond our control. We sold our thirty dairy cows until we could rebuild.”

Otay Dam, the water source for San Diego at that time, broke and only took 2 1/2 hours to empty itself of thirteen billion gallons. The water, on its seven mile course to the bay, swept nearly everything before it. Nothing remained of the neat ranches, the citrus groves or chicken farms.

It was a festive occasion, the highlight of the social season in the little community of Olivenhain. The men played horseshoes and the women visited, catching up on local happenings. Children ran at breakneck speed playing games like Run Sheep Run and Hide and Seek. In the evening, the Owls Club sponsored a dance and the Olivenhain Hall came alive with music.

Hatfield refused to stop his rain making activities, even after the rain would not stop. There were some mighty angry people. Farmers lost crops. Homes and buildings were washed away. People and animals drowned. One resident rescued by rowboat said, “Let’s pay Hatfield $100,000 to quit!”

The harvest of 1915 was bountiful and cause for celebration, but the coming rainy season, necessary for the next year’s crops and stored water supplies, was still a mystery. Who knew when the rains would come or what they held in store.

When the City of San Diego refused to respond to Hatfield’s claim for payment, he filed suit on December 16, 1916. Six months later he offered to settle for $1,800, a sum he said was less than the expenses he incurred in setting up his operation. The city agreed to settle if he assumed responsibility for the lawsuits amounting to $3,500,000 which had been filed against the city for the failure of the Otay Dam. No more was heard from him.

Rain was important to the farmers and citizens of San Diego County. There was no other source of water except rain to replenish the dams and grow the crops. My father, Herman Wiegand, a young farmer at that time, commented in his daily journal about the conditions of November 1915 and about Hatfield, the Rainmaker.

“The hot dry Santa Ana wind was blowing and draining the moisture out of the brush and trees. It seemed a long time that it blew.

Usually, after the Santa Ana the rain will move in, but no rain came. All of November was dry. A light rain came in December,

Mineral Nutrition and Livestock Production

Minerals are the smallest portion of what our animals consume on a daily basis. However, minerals play a significant role in animal health and production. Given their significant role in animal health, it is scary to realize how little consideration minerals get from most livestock producers when diets are discussed. More often, I find that most people have beliefs about specific minerals that are un-true or overstated.

In this article I wanted to touch on what minerals are, where they come from, and create the building blocks for a conversation on what each one does for the body (both the good and the bad).

growth, the feed takes up more nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (the common elements in fertilizer) and based upon when you harvest the forage, growth determines how much of each will be in your hay. Some feeds contain high amounts of specific minerals. Almond hulls are relatively high in potassium while distillers grains are high in phosphorus. As a nutritionist and a livestock producer, you have to be aware of all the included minerals in your individual feeds and then include the deficient minerals to ensure you design and feed a balanced diet. It needs to be said that all feeds contain the majority of all minerals, but the amounts of each varies drastically. The only way to accurately account for minerals in your feeds is to test the ingredients for their specific mineral content.

The periodic table of elements contains all the known building blocks that make up our universe. Minerals, (such as calcium, zinc, and boron) all fall on this table along with more common elements like carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen. Minerals can be found in a variety of locations. Copper for example is often found deep in mountains and has to be mined out. In contrast, Calcium can be found along the coast line of most oceans as a rock build up of limestone.

More often than not, minerals are found in groups where molecules are formed. Salt is a basic molecule, made up of two minerals, Sodium and Chloride.

So, how do you determine the requirements of your animal??? Over the last 100+ years, many researchers have spent their entire lives trying to determine what the requirements are for livestock. For each species there is a publication call the “Nutrient Requirements of your species �. These books contain the specific nutrient requirements of your species, at various stages of growth and production. Included are the specific needs as they relate to mineral requirements.

It is important to ensure you follow the requirements of your species as the required amounts of each species can differ.

For example, sheep have a low tolerance for copper (about 15 ppm) while beef cattle have a higher tolerance. When producers neglect the fact that requirements differ they can create deadly scenarios, caused by over supplementation of trace minerals. I have seen multiple cases where a producer fed a supplement designed for a steer or cow to sheep and goats, resulting in copper toxicity, costing the producer dearly.

To generalize, there are two groups of minerals; the Macro and Micro minerals. Macro minerals contain the minerals that are needed in larger quantities and have a more significant role biologically. The micro minerals have a smaller role and are subsequently needed in smaller amounts. The primary macro minerals are Calcium, Phosphorus, Sodium, Chloride, Potassium and Magnesium. The primary micro minerals are Zinc, Managenese, Copper, Iodine, Selenium, Iron, and Cobalt.

The goal of this article is to give you the back ground information on mineral nutrition. In the next article I will explain the specific role that each of the macro and micro minerals play in animal health and production.

Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS):

What is it all about?

By Andrea Perkins Hello, my name is Andrea Perkins and I am an Enforcement, Investigations & Analysis Officer for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) in the Alameda District. USDA is a very large agency with many different branches. FSIS is one of the many agencies under USDA. FSIS deals with food safety inspection of meat and poultry products at slaughter and processing establishments. I am going to focus on FSIS, what they do and the positions within FSIS.

ante-mortem inspection, post-mortem, residue sampling, and pathogen testing/sampling. Any diseased animal that is presented for FSIS inspection is condemned to prevent entering the food chain. FSIS also performs inspection duties and pathogen testing/sampling in processing establishments. Pathogen testing is done in both slaughter and processing establishments for, E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria monocytogenes just to name a few. FSIS is involved with imports, exports, and school lunch programs.

FSIS mission is to ensure that the nation’s commercial supply of meat, poultry, and egg products is safe, wholesome, and correctly labeled and packaged. This is done by having inspectors in slaughter and processing establishments. In USDA FSIS there are different product categories that all require FSIS inspection.

The categories are Slaughter, Raw Not Ground Product, Raw Ground Product, Not Heat Treated Shelf Stable Product, Heat Treated Shelf Stable Product, Fully Cooked – Not Shelf Stable Product, Heat Treated Not Fully Cooked Not Shelf Stable Product, Thermally Processed Shelf Stable (Commercially Sterile) Product, and Products with Secondary Inhibitors – Not Shelf Stable. There are different processes that require different inspection procedures such as slaughter and processing inspection.

In FSIS there are positions that are based out of FSIS inspected facilities and positions that are based out of the district office.

Each facility that is federally inspected has to address the hazards of concern in their process. Therefore every establishment must have a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) program in order to operate. In raw products some of the hazards of concern are E. coli, E. coli O157:H7, and Salmonella. In Ready-To-Eat (RTE) products one of the hazards is Listeria monocytogenes. Every establishment must take steps to prevent, reduce, or eliminate the hazards of concern. The FSIS inspectors will check to make sure that the establishment is taking steps and performing whatever procedures are necessary to prevent, reduce, or eliminate the hazards of concern. If an inspector finds that the establishment has not performed one of their steps in their process depending on the finding then the inspector will write a noncompliance record (NR). This is a written record that the establishment should answer giving preventive measures so this issue will not occur again. If an establishment’s Food Safety System is out of compliance, FSIS will issue enforcement action to bring the establishment back into compliance.

The following are the different positions that are performed in inspected establishments: Food Inspectors, offline slaughter inspectors, Supervisory Consumer Safety Inspectors (SCSIs), Public Health Veterinarians (PHVs), Supervisory Public Health Veterinarians (SPHVs), and Consumer Safety Inspectors (CSIs).

Some Consumer Safety Inspectors are processing inspectors, they inspect multiple establishments a day that further process meat or poultry into other products such as ground beef, steaks, jerky, sausages, pot stickers, salami, pepperoni, corn dogs, lunch meats, caning, pizza topping, etc are just to name a few products that are produced. There are also other positions in FSIS that are based out of the district office. They are Enforcement, Investigations and Analysis Officer (EIAO), Front Line Supervisor (FLS), Supervisory Enforcement Investigations and Analysis Officer (SEIAO), District Veterinary Medical Specialist (DVMS), District Case Specialist (DCS), Deputy District Manager (DDM), and District Manager (DM). In FSIS there are 15 different district offices. The Alameda District covers the whole state of California. Each district has Food Inspectors, CSIs, SCSIs, PHVs, SPHVs, FLSs, EIAOs, SEAIOs, DCSs, DVMSs, DDMs, and DMs. All employees that work for USDA, FSIS and all the establishments under FSIS go by the same rules and regulations.

It is very important that the inspectors and the establishments stay up to date on all the procedures and requirements. When dealing with bacteria and food safety concerns, sometimes things have a tendency of changing depending on different circumstances or changes. That is why it is very important for all FSIS personnel and responsible establishment personnel to stay updated on these changes. Some changes may occur that cause certain establishments that produce certain products to reassess their program to make sure it is still incompliance. At that point it is very important that the inspector checks to make sure the establishment did what they were supposed to do, so that they are still incompliance with FSIS. The job of FSIS personnel is very important to ensure that the nation’s commercial supply of meat, poultry, and egg products is safe, wholesome, and correctly labeled and packaged. That way it is safe for human consumption. FSIS strives on making sure that all products produced are wholesome and properly labeled.

It's in the bag!

By Rachelle Bailey As a pork producer and someone who judges junior hog shows throughout the year, I often ask one of the most important questions that is on the mind of a pork producer, “What are you feeding your hog?. I have gotten various answers throughout the years, anything from wheat to milk products to soybean to vitamins and minerals. Yes the diet of a market hog has many components, but the main ingredient in most cases is corn.

The hog-corn price ratio is simply the ration of the market hog price in dollars per 100 pounds to the price of corn in dollars per bushel. So, if hogs are selling at $50 per cwt and corn costs $2.50 bushel, the hog-corn price ratio is 20.

History tells us that a hog-corn price ration of 20 or greater suggests that pork production will exceed year-earlier levels 12-28 months later. Conversely, a hog-corn price ratio of 16 or less suggests that pork production will fall below year-earlier levels in 12-18 months. Because of the increase of Ethanol production in the United States in the past few years, most producers have had an increase in grain costs.

The feed bill accounts for about 65-70% of the total cost to raise a market hog. Knowing what you’re paying for and what that hog needs to grow and perform is very important to any producer. Yes it is very important to become good feed managers and be aggressive in understanding what the grain markets are.

Corn is the main ingredient in hog feed. Corn often is produced in the Corn Belt. The Corn Belt is located in the Midwestern United States. These states include: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota and Missouri. The leading states in corn production include Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska and Minnesota which, combined, generates more than half of the corn that is produced in the United States. Most corn that is produced is fed to poultry and hogs which accounts for about 40%.

Feed Tags Take a look at the feed tag that is provided with the bag that is purchased. If the feed is purchased in bulk a feed invoice can be provided from the mill. The tag will provide the following: weight range to be fed, active ingredients, Crude Fat Level, Crude Protein Level, Main Ingredients of Feed (listed in order) and withdrawal time.

Because such a large amount of corn is fed to hogs, most of the top corn producing states are also the top pork producing states.

Iowa is the top pork producing state and usually is ranked 1 or 2 in corn production each year. Because corn is grown in these areas producers have grains more readily available to them.

However, the West Coast states pay more for these grains because the grains are shipped usually by rail car to the West Coast.

Pay close attention to any special directions when using the feed or any feed additives. If the feed has any withdrawal times make sure to keep proper records on when the feed was used.

Feed Management Feed management is very important to any size of operation.

Make sure you are feeding a fresh product that is formulated for the correct stage of production (weight). Because for each phase of production, the hog will require different rations that can be utilized specifically to that growing stage. For example, many hogs during the growing stage only require 18 percent protein but can be dropped down to 16 percent for the finishing stage of production.

Hog-Corn Price Ratio The hog-corn price ratio is a time-honored measure of pork production profitability, and, as such is a good predictor of future production levels. The reason it works is that feed represents 65-70 percent of the cost of producing a pig and corn, or a close substitute such as grain sorghum or barley, makes up about 60 percent of the total feed costs.

There are numerous sources to obtain feed for your project, remember to do your research and always ask questions. By providing your pig with the correct ration and fresh water, your animal is off to a healthy start. Remember next time you enter the showring understand: What’s in the Bag!

Redlands Livestock Judging Team Dominates 2009-2010 Season Calif; Jake Warntjes of White City, Ore.; Katie Duysen of Porterville, Calif.; Zachary Bradshaw of Paradise, Texas; Bonnie McCauley of Silver City, N.M.; Kylie Watson of Marysville, Calif.; Ryan McCoon of Modesto, Calif.; Wesley Kraintz of Winters, Calif; Taylor Mefford of Ore.; Summer Riggins of Olney, Texas; Chase Ward of Bartlesville, Okla.; Ky Stierwalt of Leedey, Okla.

EL RENO– Redlands Community College Livestock Judging Teams’ extraordinary season resulted in ten championship team finishes, 41 top ten individual awards, and the induction of three All-Americans. The Redlands sophomore team literally dominated the spring season winning top honors at the Exposure Cattle Contest, Forth Worth, Dixie National, and the San Antonio Stock Show and placed second at Houston Stock Show.

The freshmen team had an undefeated season winning at the State Fair of Texas, Flint Hills Classic, Mid-Continent Livestock Expo, Tulsa State Fair, as well as tying the sophomore team at the Exposure Cattle Contest.

In addition to numerous team and individual awards, three Redlands Community College livestock judgers were selected as All-Americans, a prestigious honor only bestowed to fifteen judgers in the nation. Brandi Capps, Casey Hilmes, and Katelyn Karney were the three Redlands Community College students who were selected as All-Americans. To be selected as an All-American, students are evaluated based upon exceptional grades, participation in at least four national contests, as well as scoring consistently at each contest. Each year at the Houston Livestock Show, the Junior College Livestock Judging Coaches Association selects the All-American Judgers and announces them at the annual banquet.

Livestock Judging Coach Dr. Clay Elliott said, “These young people are dedicated, hardworking, intelligent students who deserve respect for what they have accomplished. The students’ success is truly awesome and brings tremendous recognition to our program.”

The Redlands Judging Team attracts students from across the nation. This year’s sophomore team included Brandi Capps of Dewey, Okla.; Jordan Clem of New Home, Texas; Casey Hilmes of Hesperus, Colo.; Joel Riedel of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; Katelyn Karney of La Junta, Colo.; Trevor Brassfield of Minco, Okla.; Kassandra Winn of Estancia, N.M.

“I am proud of our sophomore and freshmen team. The time and dedication they have put into judging is impressive. In addition, the opportunity to work with industry leaders is key to the success of our program, and the willingness of breeders to allow our teams to evaluate quality livestock and fine tune their skills is instrumental to our success,” said Dr. Elliott.

Long Live the Lamb Lady

Each weekday morning, I pass the time on my long commute to work catching up with the local news and current issues by turning into KPRL, the local Paso Robles radio station. Recently, the head DJ and owner of the station and a distinctive voice known as “The Lamb Lady” got into a discussion. He didn’t understand her; she didn’t understand him. I got both of them.

The station owner objected to her frequent calls to the Saturday morning Country Store to sell her lambs and lamb meat. He said: Rules are rules, lady, no commercial enterprises. She said: I’m not a commercial enterprise.

Long live the Lamb Lady! She’s a country girl just like me, embodying all things that get people into farming in the first place: the gamble of making the land productive, the thrill of watching life renew, the satisfaction of knowing that by your good stewardship, you produce a product that you can be proud of.

Getting in the sheep business is easy. You can start with one ewe; she has few twins maybe triplets, and voila, you have a flock.

But, from there on out, it’s all up hill. You have to put up with downright mean bucks, worry that dogs will chew up your flock and lambing season is a blur of long sleepless nights.

Even if you produce the best lambs or the most delectable meat, people still have that big box store mentality. It’s tough to sell USA lamb when imported stuff is cheaper. It’s harder still to market your own meat locally.

Now the Lamb Lady doesn’t consider herself a “commercial enterprise.” I’ll bet she isn’t. She enjoyed the country cycle of life and in the process, planned to have a few good cuts of meat for herself and her family. With a freezer, she could have tasty, grown-withlove lamb year round. I’m sure she hoped to make enough from selling the rest to buy hay and grain for her flock. She’d like to break even. Most American farmers faced with her same situation would echo that statement.

The station owner banned her from calling in for a while claiming that she was the only one who people complained about. I understand that the radio station isn’t going to stay in business if it gives away advertising, but I found myself tuning into the Saturday show just to see if the Lamb Lady had the guts to call in, peddling her live lambs and freezers full of “USDA inspected, yummy roasts and chops.”

Duysen Hired as AHA Junior Activities Intern

KANSAS CITY, Mo. –­­­ Corey Ann Duysen will serve as the American Hereford Association’s (AHA) junior activities intern this summer. Duysen grew up showing livestock and is a recent graduate of Oklahoma State University’s (OSU) agricultural communications program.

AHA Youth Activities Director Amy Cowan says, “I am very excited to have Corey join the Hereford team this summer. She is very talented and brings some outstanding communication, marketing and showring experience to the internship. She will be a big asset at the Junior National Hereford Expo, Program for Reaching Individuals Determined to Excel (PRIDE) Convention, and in working with the junior participants and their families.”

Duysen, from Porterville, Calif., was very active in the livestock industry as a youth, showing cattle, sheep and hogs. She got started helping out on her grandparents’ ranch, and remains active in the cattle industry after retaining the heifers she showed and growing her own herd. Duysen was active in the California Junior Livestock Association, and served on its board of directors.

Duysen plans to continue her education following the internship by pursuing a master’s degree in agricultural communications at Texas Tech University.

The National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) is one of the most active junior programs in the country with approximately 3,000 members. The NJHA’s mission is to create and promote enthusiasm for the breed while providing opportunities through leadership, education and teamwork. Also involved in college, Duysen served as a chapter and national Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow (ACT) officer.
