Can you believe that we are on the verge of 2010? I remember all the hoopla when we ended the 1900’s with 1999 and swung into the year 2000. A lot of things have happened in the 10 years since then. Good things and bad, ups and downs, and a few curves along the way have affected each and every one of us. It seems as if we get adjusted to the current situation, things settle down, everything is going great, and then wham! Another curve in the road. We are hearing daily about the economy and how tough things are for everyone. We are also hearing lots of information on how to weather this storm in our lives. I believe it is more important than ever to stay focused on your goals and to keep moving forward. It is important to keep a positive mental outlook and take advantage of the support system you have around you. Your family, friends, co-workers, are all sources for reassurance, help, and guidance if you need it.

This issue includes the Jackpot Breakdown section. In this list, you will find dates and contacts for shows held throughout the western states. We’ve had a few shows that have decided not to hold their event in 2010. Sometimes this is due to funding, conflicting dates, or lack of enough help to put it on. The shows that have set dates are excited to do what they can to support our youth involved in raising and showing animals. You as exhibitors need to remember that these shows are mainly put on by volunteers – people making time to do something for you! Many times they are putting in their own money to make things work and they are not compensated for their efforts except by the words of thanks they receive. A word of appreciation and thanks goes so far to make the hard work worthwhile. Please keep this in mind when you are asked to sponsor, or to help out. And if it happens that you have a valid complaint, offer a solution as well.

SHOWMANSHIP: The Key to Success

By Joel Judge ideas, there are 2 views, rear and side. Most all classes start off side to side so get in the ring and get to your position quickly and confidently, most kids that don’t know always look lost. You will then be asked to walk the animal usually in a clock wise motion around the ring. When walking, keep a nice easy pace and be aware of your position in the ring such as gates and corners. All leaders have preached so long about keep the head up, but this is wrong, you should lead your animal at a comfortable head level not too high and definitely not too low, just something that is comfortable. This allows your animal to stride out and move free and easy rather than tight and confined, you never see cattle walking in a pasture with their head cranked up high in the air unless danger is present. You will be stopping for a side view from the walk; this is where awareness comes in again. You need to plan ahead and stop at a distance that allows you to set up the animal and yet not be on top of the person in front of you. I like to preach stopping the animal into its front feet, this allows for a faster setup and a quicker, better look for the judge. This can be done easily with lots of practice at home. When you are stopped the front feet can be even or the show side foot (right) slightly forward and the back feet should always be staggered placing the show side again farther back than the offside or left foot. This provides a much nicer look for the animal as it corrects the top line and leg set from the side view. Now is the time to get that animals head up and looking straight forward. Many times younger showmen struggle keeping that head forward so you need to work on different scratching positions to keep them presented correctly. When you get out of line, you need to pull back in place and in line, there is a bad habit across the nation with showmen continually bumping out in the ring. This is distracting and most judges do not need you to bury another animal to move up in class. When you do get pulled, move quickly and directly to the spot, once again this shows knowledge, awareness and confidence. At the end of a class while the judge is giving reasons, please be courteous and stop for a moment as your animal is critiqued, then move out. Another trend in the Midwest that is very distracting and annoying is coming up to the judge while they are giving their reason and attempting to shake their hand. Please be respectful and if you want to show your appreciation, come back in between classes or after the show.

I am back in the flow of writing articles and I have more of an observation than a true lesson for this month. I have had the privilege over the past 4 years to be able to judge livestock shows, more specifically beef shows throughout the United States. This would include the heart of the Midwest states like Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas, plus in the upper Midwest and the Southern states. I have always commented on the quality of cattle in each of these areas, but they are not much different than quality that we see here in California. The major differentiation between livestock shows in California and the other regions that I have previously mentioned is showmanship.

I am sure that many of the best showmen in each species reside here in this state and I can’t say enough how much I appreciate that. It was always puzzling to me watching judges from the Midwest come to the California State Fair and struggle so much judging the showmanship competitons. I can easily understand, they do not see that many great showmen in one ring. I will concede that each state has a few good showmen but not the high numbers that we see here.

I would like to offer some long overdue praise to all the young showmen here in the Golden State; you are definitely among the best in the country. From a judges perspective, it is so much nicer to be evaluating livestock when the animal is show to its best potential. I have asked kids in the major livestock states to please set up their animals feet so I don’t have to imagine how their steer or heifer would look. Recently I commented to the clerks at their state fair that it was embarrassing that not one kid could come close to setting their animal up in a decent fashion. Once again I applaud you for taking a personal pride in your project and raising that level of competition in the state. We just suffer from a paradigm that West Coast families are not at the same level nor are as involved in agriculture to the same extent as the Midwest. Time for that change, YOU are the best showmen in the nation and that includes all the species that we currently show here in California.

Now I will give a basic lesson on showing cattle. This is so important for your beef project; a great showman can make an average animal look great. On the flip side of that, a poor showman can ruin a great one, not that the animal won’t be evaluated fairly or place well. The difference is that great showmen have that advantage when it’s down to the last look or crunch time that is when you and the animal have to be their best.

Showmanship requires; skill, knowledge, awareness of the surroundings, control, look or presence and most of all confidence. It is very easy to spot someone walking into the ring and know they have the potential to be good or average just by their presence.

That’s the overview lesson for today, I want to conclude by encouraging you to continually try and improve each time in the ring.

Go watch others that are good showmen, watch judges and see what always catches their eye. Get help from leaders and parents in ways to improve. You are part of the best group of showmen in the country so to succeed you will need lots of practice and determination.

Is Alfalfa Enough for my Lactating Ewes?

your alfalfa contains? The most accurate way is to sample your hay and send it to a certified testing lab for analysis.

It’s fall, and that means that lambing is either upon you or shortly around the corner. As your ewe transitions from gestation to lactation, the demands on her body increase dramatically. The last trimester of gestation is the month and half that the lambs grow the most, but it’s not until she is responsible for feeding them with her milk that the deficiencies in her diet can drastically impact her performance and the lambs’ growth. So the question is: How do you feed her to ensure that she produces the maximum amount of milk to raise healthy lambs and ensure that she maintains her body mass, allowing her to re-breed early next year.

In California, we have an abundance of alfalfa. This year, unlike the last, the alfalfa is relatively cheap, allowing most producers to afford to feed it. If you plan to use alfalfa for the basis of your diet, you have to think about how well your alfalfa meets the demands of your ewe. Let’s start by defining the requirements of your lactating ewe.

Ok, you have your results and you can clearly see that your ration is not balanced so what do you do to correct the ration. Now you have to determine what your other feed options are and work on determining how much of various ingredients will enable you to feed a balanced diet. There are many ingredients available that complement alfalfa and can be easily obtained to balance your diet.

If your diet is energy deficient (as the majority of alfalfa based diets are), then you can feed almond hulls, corn, barley, molasses or cottonseed to increase the energy content of your ration. Likewise, if you are protein deficient you can feed canola, soybeans, corn gluten or corn distillers to increase the protein content. In the end, there are many complementary ingredients available to use, however, the one you pick will be based upon availability, storage and cost.

I got my hay test results, now what??

The first question is how much will she eat. If we assume she will eat 3-4% of her weight in feed each day, then a 200 lb ewe will eat between 6 and 8 lbs of feed per day. Using this range, we have to design a diet to meet all of her requirements and make it fit into a total of 6 – 8 lbs. The basic lactation diet has to meet some basic requirements, supplying enough fiber, energy, protein, carbohydrates and minerals to ensure production. The basic requirements of your diet are listed in Table 1.

There are numerous ways to balance a ration, including ration software and by hand using the Peirson Square method. However, it is usually easier to talk with a nutritionist and have them help you. Your local extension agent most likely has experience in this area and is a great resource.

Take home message: The point of this article is to illustrate that lactating ewes have a requirement during milk production that is not met by simply feeding alfalfa or any other feedstuff by itself. It is the combination of many ingredients that enable producers to feed balanced diets and maximize production.

If you are using alfalfa as the sole source of nutrients in your diet, you would need to compare the nutrients in your forage to the requirements of your ewe to determine if your ration is balanced.

Table 2 describes the nutrient ranges of alfalfa from thousands of samples. The point of Table 2 is to illustrate that not all alfalfa bales are created equal. So how do you determine what nutrients

Supreme Heifer Championship Highlights American Royal Livestock Show The highlight of the 2009 Junior Breeding Heifer Show took place on Sunday, November 1st. Judge Chris Mullinix, El Dorado, KS was charged with choosing one heifer out of the lineup of champions representing the best of all breeds at this years show. At stake was the $5,000 Stanley E. Stout Memorial Scholarship to be awarded to the exhibitor of the Supreme heifer. In addition, every other breed champion in the lineup received a $500 scholarship.

When the dust settled, Sydney Schnoor of Chowchilla, CA was at the halter of the Supreme Champion Heifer. Her entry, KNC Cabin Creek Sandy 804, was first selected as the Champion Angus Female.

Shayne Myers, Colusa, CA exhibited the Champion Hereford Female – EKS S04 Paris U37. She received a $500 Memorial Scholarship.

University of Illinois Hosts NJSA Boot Camp

25th Annual Event!

The National Junior Swine Association (NJSA) invites NJSA members to participate in the second NJSA Boot Camp at the University of Illinois in Urbana, Ill., on Sat., March 20, from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. This one-day swine camp is open to youth 8-12 years of age.

The conference will feature educational workshops on showmanship with winning youth showman Lynsee Shaffer; show pig selection with swine judge and breeder Brandon Yantis; and skillathon preparation. In addition, youth will be invited to participate in a judging workout with Illinois’ judging team coach, Dr. Dan Shike, and evaluate a practice class of pigs. Dr. Tom Carr of the University of Illinois will discuss pork quality.

There’s A Fungus Among Us:

RINGWORM: Part 2

HJ Hamlen, DVM, MS, DACVPM and C. Hinken, MS concern if treatment is undertaken is that the person may acquire the infection themselves through the frequent contact with the lesions! Steps should be taken to prevent this, such as wearing latex or rubber gloves and proper hand-washing.

Introduction In the last issue we discussed the fungal species that cause ringworm in a variety of animals (including people) and discussed the clinical signs and transmission of the infection. Let’s continue to learn about this important condition as we discuss diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Most topical ringworm preparations on the market are labeled for use in dogs, cats, and horses not intended for food. FARAD (Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank) states that “THERE IS NO RINGWORM TREATMENT APPROVED FOR THE TOPICAL USE IN FOOD PRODUCING Ringworm lesions on a dog.

ANIMALS”. This means that a valid patient-clientveterinarian relationship must be established and that treatment decisions are “off-label”. Milk and meat withdrawal times should be determined for any treatment undertaken and the safety of the treatment in pregnant, lactating, or nursing animals should be considered. Many veterinarians will advise producers to use topical treatments including: chlorhexidine (diluted to 0.5 - 2%) marketed by Fort Dodge as Nolvasan‘, lime sulfur dips (2-5%), benzalkonium chloride (0.15%), and captan (3%). A 1:10 dilution of hypochlorite solution (Chlorox‘) is also effective but will corrode metal and stain clothing that it contacts. Tamed (providone) iodine (.05 -1%) is drying and antifungal but may stain. Many topical treatments have drawbacks such as staining fur or Ringworm commonly occurs on the face of cattle. wool, and irritating skin so test a treatment on a small area first. My personal preference is Foot Rot and Ringworm Spray (1.5% benzalkonium chloride) by Agrilabs.

Diagnosis Ringworm is often diagnosed by its appearance and location alone. Since there several species of fungi involved not every case looks the same. In order to get a definitive diagnosis, a veterinarian may perform one (and possibly more) of the following tests.

• A Wood’s lamp can be used to shine ultraviolet light on the affected area. Many species of fungi will fluoresce (glow) a bright apple green color in the presence of the light. But not all fungi respond to the light and other non-fungal material (like dander and some topical medications) do. This is a quick and cost-effective screening tool.

• A KOH (potassium hydroxide) test can be used to diagnose ringworm, but not all infections can be easily detected. Hair is pulled from the area surrounding the lesion and is placed on a microscope slide in a KOH solution. The solution makes the spores more visible under the microscope.

• A DTM (Dermatophyte Test Medium) is a prepared culture kit. This is the only truly reliable way to diagnose ringworm. A sample of plucked hairs from the affected area is placed on the medium and left to grow at room temperature over a period of about ten days. If the fungal spores are present, the substance inside the medium changes from yellow to bright red. When a definitive diagnosis is needed, this is the recommended method.

Treatment Many times, ringworm resolves without treatment, as the animal mounts an immune response to the agent.

This is evident by the Scratching your head about how to treat ring appearance of the ringworm in livestock? Wash your hands first because ringworm can spread to people. lesions – the inside is usually cleared of fungi by the animals immune system and most of the active fungi are at the periphery of the lesion. Resolution can take as little as 1 month or as long as 6 months, depending on the species, age, and stresses the animal is experiencing. Usually, the hair will grow back, however, there may be scarring especially if the animal has traumatized the area by scratching or if secondary infection has developed. Topical antifungal medications can reduce the severity of the condition and risk of spread to other animals. The real December 2009/January 2010

Regardless of you and your veterinarian decide, you must make sure that the topical treatment penetrates the affected area. Remember, the fungus is active at the outer edge of the lesion and progresses outward into healthy fur or wool. You must remove the wool or fur from an area around every lesion (a few inches in diameter) and use a soft nailbrush to thoroughly clean the skin, removing scabs or debris before applying a topical treatment. This will also help dry the skin 22

and expose it to sunlight. Since fungal spores are microscopic it may not be effective to limit treatment to the lesions. You may need to spray, dip, or pour-on the topical treatment over the entire animal. The interval of treatment should also be discussed with your veterinarian – generally treatments should be daily for a period of time and then weekly, and continue past the point of resolution. Attention should be paid to decontaminating the environment, or, at the least, not making matters worse by contaminating the environment during treatment. Remember to sanitize your clippers (use Nolvasan‘ solution diluted for use on inanimate objects) and properly dispose of brushes, and contaminated debris!

Make sure your veterinarian is involved in choosing the treatment and providing advice on prevention, nutritional management, and segregating affected animals from healthy ones. Your veterinarian may advise vitamin A and D injections to speed healing.

Ringworm is a contagious disease and animals with lesions will not be admitted to fairs or shows. Since there are no approved topical treatments for food producing animals, and “off-label” topical treatment is time-consuming with many drawbacks (such as stained fur and human exposure to the fungus), prevention is the goal.

• Keeping animals’ living quarters clean and dry. Animals kept in dark, damp, warm, or poorly ventilated housing are more susceptible to ringworm. When possible use the disinfecting power of sun!

• Animals coming into the herd or flock should be examined for lesions, held in isolation for 30 days and reexamined, and possibly screened by a veterinarian prior to entry. Animals returning from a show may inadvertently bring back ringworm. You and your veterinarian may elect to treat returning animals if the risk is high. You can do your part by never taking an affected animal to a show or fair.

• As much as possible, do not keep animals in close confinement, especially in the winter months.

• Equipment that will come in contact with multiple animals should be carefully cleaned disinfected after each use. Remember that disinfectants do not penetrate dirt and debris, and may be inactivated by organic matter – so clean first.

“What’s wrong with her? She should be famished by now. I hope she isn’t sick,” Pete’s dad said. A small, concerned frown crossed his face.

Pete shifted uncomfortably.

Pete’s dad rattled the bucket again. Petunia rolled over and stretched her belly toward the rising sun.

Just after dawn on a chilly early spring morning, five members of the Pioneer 4-H Beef Group met on the final day of our getting-ready-for-the-big-show countdown. They had spent the days leading up to this one, brushing, walking, feeding and fitting their animals. They had practiced showmanship, learning the difference between a roughage and a concentrate and the inside and outside beef parts, just in case the judge asked them.

They were ready for their big city debut.

“Pete?” his dad questioned.

“Well, she was so hungry,” Pete said, “I fed her.”

“You what,” we all asked at the same time.

“She was hungry,” Pete repeated.

“No problem,” Pete’s dad said, but I could see he thought like the rest of us. It was going to be a problem. “We’ll get her close, and push her in with the hog boards.”

Petunia had other ideas. She’d had her breakfast, a big one Pete admitted, since she hadn’t had much the night before. She was ready for her morning nap and didn’t want to be disturbed. Pete drove her toward the trailer, but halfway, she broke and ran back to the pen. We repeated this exercise over and over.

The plan was for the steers and heifers to travel to the 1985 edition of Great Western Livestock Show held at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds via the Twist Ranch’s two-ton cattle truck. A caravan of campers would follow filled with the kids and their parents. We had dropped off Katey’s and TR’s steers and heifer at the Twist Ranch and filled up the stock trailer with the club’s equipment, overhead displays, and straw, leaving one small spot for the last element of the show team.

“Wait, we’re getting nowhere,” I said. Then, thinking of the travel supplies I had stashed for the trip, I sprinted to the pick-up and returned with an armful of snacks.

The teenage girls drew the privilege of riding in the cattle truck. Katey and TR were going to stay at the ranch while we made the last pick-up and looped back to all gather together for the final leg of the journey.

We laid out a trail of Cheetos. She sniffed the first one and gulped it down, immediately looking for more. Slowly she inched her way up the hill. The rest of us followed armed with the hog boards.

All we needed to get on down the road was Pete’s pig.

“Come on, Petunia,” I said, placing one Cheeto on the edge of the trailer and tossing a handful inside.

Eleven-year-old Pete loved his pig. He spent more time brushing and playing tag with her than he did playing video games. He might forget to take out the trash, empty the dishwasher, or finish his homework, but his pig never went without food or water. The pen was raked clean twice a day and Pete made sure that there was always a pile of cozy, sweet-smelling barley straw in the corner.

Delicately she reached for the first one, munched it and keyed in on the rest, arching her body toward the open door.

“Now!” Pete’s dad said.

She was surrounded by hog boards, but with a surprised squeal, she spun and placing her snout under the middle board, tossed Pete’s dad backward down the hill. Bucking and barking, she ran straight back to her pen.

As we rounded the last curve, we could see Pete and his family waving enthusiastically. Their house sat on top of a small hill, surrounded by a few acres with a wide view of the valley below. The little ranchette was laid out nicely. A new pole barn sat to one side; a garage and a pool flanked the house with the pig pen, quite naturally, at the farthest point and downwind from the house. Pete’s mom made sure of this when she agreed to the pig project.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “We tried.”

fat does improve a goats dressing percentage. Clear as mud? Let’s try this. Heavy muscled goats have a higher dressing percentage than light muscled goats, fat goats have a higher dressing percentage than lean goats and heavy muscled, fat goats really have a high dressing percentage. So is a high dressing percentage always a good thing? This fat thing seems to really confuse the matter. All fat, on a goat’s body, plays a role in changing dressing percentage. The fat areas we need to address are backfat (external fat), seam fat (the fat around and between the muscles) and internal fat (KPH fat). KPH refers to the fat that develops around the Kidneys, inside the Pelvic area and around the Heart. When looking at a carcass hanging on the rail, KPH fat is the fat that is deposited around the pelvis and then extends down through the body of the carcass. (See photo) Since we know that goats fatten from the inside out, KPH fat can have a dramatic and devastating effect on carcass value by actually reducing the percentage of lean edible product. KPH fat levels on a lean (0.1” backfat or less) market ready goat are in the range of 1 to 2 percent. In my research on goat carcasses, we found that when a goat exceeds 0.1 inches (one tenth of an inch) of backfat, that KPH fat levels begin to increase rapidly and can reach as high as 10 to 15 percent.

In my travels over the last few years, it has become increasingly clear that the area of our industry in which we are the weakest is carcass evaluation.

(The most important area!) Dressing percentage, yield grade, quality grade, selection grade, KPH, etc.--all these terms seem to be a foreign language with respect to our “show” industry and that is very unfortunate. The next series of articles will address many of these carcass issues with respect to our industry and hopefully will shed some light on how and why some judges place your animals differently than others.

Most goat carcasses in the United States are marketed very differently than meat from other species. Rather than selling goat meat (chevon) in cuts, most goat is sold as whole, half or quarter carcasses (wholesale cuts).

This system is primarily due to the limited amount of edible product on a goat carcass and because of the usual methods of preparing chevon for consumption. Occasionally a consumer can find some retail cuts of chevon in select/specialty groceries, but this is the exception rather than the rule. Because of this unique marketing system, one of the most important carcass measures we need to understand is dressing percentage.

Since dressing percentage is a comparison of carcass weight to live weight, we need to look at how we alter the live weight variable. We could harvest goats at a much lighter weight, but because a goat’s dressing percentage increases as they get heavier due to both increased muscle mass and fat deposition, the trade-off does not achieve our desired results. The live-weight effect on dressing percentage is an issue more directly related to reducing the weight of the “throw-away” portion of the goat’s body. Obviously, the less middle or “gut-fill” a goat has, the less negative effect there is on carcass yield. Extremely heavy middle goats will simply have more throw away even though they may yield higher due to increased internal fat levels. More specifically, if a goat drinks a gallon of water prior to weighing before harvest that 100 lb. goat now weighs 108 lbs. Since his 40 lb. carcass weight will not change, his dressing percentage will now drop from 40% to 37%. Although this sounds rather minor, a drop of that percentage is significant on a goat carcass.

Dressing percentage is simply the ratio or percentage of carcass weight to live weight. Carcass weight is the weight of the carcass after harvesting the animal. This means the removal of the hide, head, internal organs (except the kidneys), blood and the legs below the knees and hocks.

In other words, carcass weight is the weight of the muscle, bone and fat after everything else is removed. Another name for dressing percentage is yield. However, this should not be confused with yield grade. Yield grade is actually an irrelevant term with respect to the goat industry because we do not calculate yield grades on goats like we do cattle and sheep. Yield grade is a calculation using live weight, carcass weight, backfat, KPH fat and loin-eye area and gives an animal a numerical score ranging from 1 to 5. True, some places will attempt to calculate yield grades on goats, but they are typically using the sheep yield grade formula or an altered formula, neither of which are industry accepted in the goat world. Dressing percentage or yield in goats is expressed as a percentage. In other words, if a 100 lb. goat has a 40 lb. carcass then that goat’s dressing percentage would be 40% or if an 80 lb. goat has a 35 lb. carcass then that goat has a dressing percentage of 43.75%. This does not mean that my 100 lb. goat will have 40 lbs of edible product—remember, bone and external and internal fat are still part of that carcass weight at this point.

One of the “hot-button” areas being discussed today in the showring is that of bone mass. True, a kid that possesses extra bone has a nicer look in the ring and thus has the advantage visually. Additionally, there appears to be a correlation in most all species between bone mass and heavier muscled carcasses. (There are a few exceptions). However when we carcass these animals, we find that there is less than a 1% difference in total bone weight when comparing extremely heavy boned animals with very frail boned animals.

Here is the real issue—a fat 100 lb. wether dresses 48%, we now lose 10-15% for KPH fat, we lose another 5-6 % for bone and then lose another 5-7% for seam and external fat. We are not left with a lot of edible product for the consumer. This is the reason that chevon price is so expensive compared to the price we receive when selling live goats at the market. So what is the right answer? Yes, we want to have high dressing percentages. However, we need to realize that as animals fatten we are also increasing dressing percentage with what will ultimately be trimmed off and thrown away! The less throw-away an animal has the greater the opportunity for that animal to have an increased yield of edible product. Ideally, we need to develop extremely heavy muscled, lean animals that will excel in TRUE yield and will have a limited amount of trim loss.

Most goats will have a dressing percentage of 40 to 50 percent. Ultimately these percentages are affected by muscle, fat and other factors such as gut fill, pregnancy status, etc. When evaluating these factors muscling has the greatest effect on dressing percentage. The heavier muscled that a goat is the higher his dressing percentage. Thus the advantage goes to the heavier muscled animals because of its positive effect on yield.

Fat on the other hand also positively affects dressing percentage. As an animal gets fatter, dressing percentage still gets higher. Remember, fat stays on the carcass for this calculation! Although we do NOT want fat goats, December 2009/January 2010

One last reminder, if you plan to join for 2010, be sure to get your new Membership Form in before the first show you attend. Points do not accumulate until you have paid your dues. Also be sure to provide your Email address as we plan to do more and send more information to you this way in 2010. If you have already sent in your membership for 2010, we will be sending the new Rules Book and information out to you as soon as we get them printed.

This is the last Issue before our annual Award Banquet coming up on February 13th, 2010. The points for the Lamb, Hog, and Goat divisions are completed with all shows being recorded. The Top Eight Shows are included here for all species.

The only show not yet recorded in these points is the Holiday Classic Steer and Heifer Shows (2 shows). This show was held as we were wrapping up this issue so I was not able to get them in time to record. The year-end spreadsheets have been mailed to all Lamb, Hog, and Goat Division members. You have until December 31st to verify your points with me. After that date, your points total will stand as recorded. The spreadsheet will list all shows attended and points earned at each show. If you are a member of the Heifer or Steer Division in addition to a small animal division, I will be mailing all your spreadsheets when I finish the cattle sheets. The date for you to respond will be listed on those sheets. Along with your spreadsheets, you all received an Invitation to the Award Banquet. Please send in your response ASAP so we can plan for the meal and event. We hope you can all come and enjoy the evening of recognition, awards, fun and good food! Remember to make arrangements with someone to pick up your awards and packets if you cannot make it.

Pork Spectacular Rules and Regulations: CLUB PIG SHOW AND SALE 1. The weight range of the pigs entered in the sale shall be 50-125 lbs.

2. Papers are required for purebred club pigs. Hogs without papers will be shown in the crossbred division 3. The Club Pig Sale will be limited to 25 club pigs, and will be determined by the judge.

GENERAL RULES - SHOW 1. First bedding will not be provided. Only shavings are allowed. Shavings will be available for sale.

2. Entries are limited to 2 boars, 5 open gilts, 4 bred gilts and 2 Club pigs per exhibitor.

3. There will be no refunds on entry fees.

4. CPPA reserves the right to refuse any entry.

5. All Breeding animals require a certificate of veterinary inspection and a health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian. Health documents must accompany each animal in transport.

6. All exhibitors at the 2010 California Pork Spectacular must be a CPPA member.

7. There will be no refunds on entry fees.

8. All swine entered in the Pork Spectacular MUST have a premise ID. To obtain your premise ID, go to www.californiaid.org or (866) 325-5681 9. The Judge for the Pork Spectacular is Jim McCoy.

JUNIOR JACKPOT SHOW 1. Accepted weight range: 50-280 lbs. Exhibitors will submit weights to the show manager no later than Saturday, February 9th at 8:30a.m. There will be weigh back on the top 3 animals in each class, those animals must weigh with in 5% of their show weight.

2. All Prospect Pigs must be in place by February 9th at 8:00 a.m. See Pork Spectacular schedule for arrival times. Prospect pigs may only arrive at times specified.

3. Pigs which are exhibited in the Breeding Swine or Club Pig Senior show, can only be shown in the Junior club show if they are purchased in the sale. Barrows can be double entered in the Barrow show and Jackpot show.

4. Awards will be made as follows: Champion Junior Prospect: Buckle and $100 - Reserve Champion Junior Prospect: $100 Champion Showman: $50 - Reserve Showman: $25 Class Premiums for Jackpot and Showmanship: 1st $35, 2nd $30, 3rd $25, 4th $15, 5th $10

SALE - GENERAL RULES 1. CPPA will not bill individuals for purchased swine. Animals purchased on sale day through the sale must be paid for on sale date. Only exhibitors who have sold animals in the sale will be allowed the opportunity to be billed.

2. Checks for payment from individuals or firms that have had check(s) returned to CPPA due to non-sufficient funds in the past will not be accepted at the 2010 Pork Spectacular. Cash, check, money order or cashiers check will be the only form of payment accepted.

3. Sale order will be determined by the judge and Swine Improvement Committee.

4. Animals sold in accordance with Swine Code of Fair Practices.

5. A commission of 15% to CPPA and the NPB check off will be retained on animals sold.

6. Animals purchased in the sale can be taken from the grounds immediately following the sale, and must be off the grounds at the conclusion of the Jackpot Show.

BARROW SHOW 1. The weight range is: 200— 280 pounds.

2. There is no limit on the number of entries by any producer.

3. There will be two divisions: Purebred and Crossbred. Purebred barrows must have papers.

4. Awards and Premiums are as follows: Supreme Champion Market Barrow: $1,500.00* - Reserve Supreme Market Barrow: $500.00* Champion Purebred and Crossbred: $200.00* - Reserve Champion Purebred and Crossbred: $150.00* Class Premiums: 1st Place: $100.00*, 2nd Place: $75.00*, 3rd Place: $50.00* *Premium Payouts are based on a total of 50 head entered in the show, and $2500 sponsorships.

5. There will be a minimum of three weight classes for each division (210-240, 241-260, 261-280). If classes exceed 15/class additional weight classes will be added. Weight breaks will change if number of classes increase.

6. This is NOT a terminal show.

PUREBRED BREEDING SWINE SHOW 1. Age Requirements: Open Gilts - Farrowed on or after June 1, 2009

Boars - Farrowed on or after June 1, 2009

Bred Gilts due to farrow February 15 - May 31, 2010 3. All swine must have at least 6 functional nipples on each side. Pin nipples not counted. Any boar or gilt with an inverted nipple will be sifted.

4. All entries must be registered with original papers submitted at check-in. Bred gilts must have breeding certificate attached to registration paper. (No copies of pedigrees will be accepted.) Pigs must be registered in the name of the CPPA member in order to be eligible to show.

5. Bred Gilts must be purebred; may carry a crossbred litter and bred to farrow within 30 days from her first birth date.

6. Purebred Breeding Swine Sale will be limited to: 10 Boars, 40 Open Gilts, 25 Bred Gilts. Sale order will be determined by the Judge.

BARROW SHOW - CARCASS CONTEST 1. Exhibitors who choose to enter the Barrow Carcass contest is at their discretion.

2. Carcass contest entries must be entered in the Barrow Show.

3. Exhibitors receive market price less NPB check-off, l ribbing charge ($10/ head) and transportation costs, for those barrows entered in the Carcass Contest.

4. Awards and Premiums are as follows: Champion Carcass: $100.00 Reserve Champion Carcass: $75.00 3rd Place: $50.00 4th Place: $35.00 5th Place: $25.00

Ringworm occurs in all species of mammals, including man. It is a public health concern because it is zoonotic and can be passed from animals to humans and back again. Animals are screened prior to entry to any event and will be banned from exhibition, based on show or fair regulations, if ringworm is suspected. Ringworm is self-limiting without treatment, but without treatment, isolation of affected animals, and disinfection of objects that may harbor the spores, the infection is more likely to spread.

• Adequate nutrition and access to clean water are important.

Ethylenediamine dihydroiodide (EDDI) is a pet and livestock organic food additive to prevent iodine deficiency that may increase resistance to foot rot and ringworm. Make sure that your ration is balanced for both macro- and micronutrients including iodine.

• Seek medical treatment for sick animals and tend to scratches, sores and open wounds that are ideal for the spread of ringworm. Eliminate items on the property that could potentially cause injury.

Remember, prevention is preferred to treatment. Keep things clean and watch for signs of ringworm. Early detection, isolation, and treatment may prevent an outbreak of ringworm in your herd or flock, and knowledge about the condition will help you avoid contracting it from your animals.

• Do not disrupt the normal skin bacteria by bathing show animals too frequently. Stripping the lanolin or waxy oils from healthy skin may predispose your animal to ringworm.

Phoenix, AZ - The Arizona National Livestock Show Scholarship Program began in 1991 by awarding $13,500.00 to eleven students in that year. Over 19 years later the Arizona National Livestock Show has now awarded 572 students totaling $570,909. The scholarship selection process has gone from annual to semi-annual. The Scholarship Committee recently selected and awarded $12,000 in scholarships for the spring 2010 semester. Scholarship recipients will be honored at the 62nd Arizona National Livestock Show Dedication December 28, 2009 at the Arizona State Fairgrounds.

Selenium is a trace element found in varying quantities in soil. Regional variations are reflected in the amount of selenium in plants, including cereal crops. These variations are in turn reflected in the selenium content of animal and vegetable products in human foods and consequently have a significant impact on the amount of selenium in the human diet. Low selenium content in human foods is becoming a health issue in many parts of the world. The average intake of selenium is now less than a third of the level in the average American.

While livestock owners have added all-natural feed additives to their feedstuffs for many years, humans are now beginning to reconsider their own diets and the important components they are missing. In our rearview mirror, I saw Pete’s disappointed face as we drove away. I felt so sorry for him.

We reached the show grounds without incident, surfing through the big city traffic like pros. The steers and heifers bedded down nicely, and by the next day were used to the noise and crowds. We had plenty of time before the final call for weigh-in, so I gathered the show team and we hit the wash racks.
