I still feel like I don’t know you Sophia Nguyen

I used to go swimming in the ocean when i was young. there would be times when i’d take a step, and the seafloor would suddenly dip so low that i’d have to keep myself afloat; i was suddenly in the abyss with no forewarning. but then there were times when i thought i’d nearly drown, but when i took that step i found myself only ankle-deep. i don’t know which one i liked better, i still don’t.

The world didn’t stop for me It just took slower breaths I watched everything from a distance, blanketed in a muggy August embrace Familiar to the wind of fall a molasses moving breeze carried my dreams away as memories of red lipped sticky summers by the country club pool became more and more pronounced Like hands around a neck I suffocated as I watched you blossom from that ripe age of seven You bloomed as I withered away while dreams of Ivy League became your reality and slowly slipped through my fingers like dry sand If only the heat hadn’t crept up so quietly and slowly blocked out all sound besides the whirring fan maybe I would of caught up instead of laying atop the bed while the silence grew too loud and I grew far too old and far too behind

Healing involves going backwards Sophia Nguyen

Once upon a time I was a freshwater trout That longed to experience the abyss called the ocean, Hoping to find the consolation I needed To justify the depth of my heart, And the rigid scales I bore.

So one day I swam out of my shallow little lake And into a stream That brought me to a river That lead me to the ocean.

In the ocean i met many other creatures, Some with even tougher scales than me Some with no scales at all.

They were all very kind, They told me stories of how they came to the ocean.

Some came by stream and some came by river, Some even came from human tanks.

But above all they congratulated me For having the courage to make it this far.

I thanked them for their warm welcome And i really enjoyed the stay, But the current kept pulling me back to the river, Back to the stream, Back to my shallow little lake.

I didn’t have enough fight in me to stay in that sea of recovery, But i’ll make it back one day.

I promise.
