2024-2025 - Pacific Ridge Annual Report

ANNUAL REPORT PACIFIC RIDGE SCHOOL

Dear Pacific Ridge Community,

It is an honor to share the Pacific Ridge School 2024–2025 Annual Report, which highlights the accomplishments and generosity that defined our 18th school year.

From the very beginning, Pacific Ridge was built on vision, courage, and the generosity of families who believed in a school that didn’t yet exist — including our “First Circle” donors who each contributed $5,000 before we had a faculty, a campus, or even a first day of school. Today, that spirit of bold support continues to shape our school’s growth and future.

This past year was filled with milestone moments. In June, 120 seniors — our largest graduating class ever — crossed the stage, ready for what’s next. Their paths reflect a range of talents and aspirations, from Division I and III athletes to visual and performing artists, future architects, writers, and entrepreneurs. Our student-athletes also made history, with the PRS Boys Varsity Soccer Team winning the school’s first-ever SoCal Regional State Championship — an incredible achievement for a program still young by most standards.

It was also a record-breaking year in philanthropy. The PRS community came together to raise over $1 million for the Annual Fund — the most in school history — with record levels of alumni participation. The Class of 2025 made a first-ever Class Legacy Gift to the PRS General Endowment, helping secure the school’s future for generations to come.

As a long-time member of the PRS community, I’ve witnessed firsthand how our school brings together passion, purpose, and a deep commitment to growth — in our students and in ourselves. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve as Chair of the Board of Trustees at this exciting moment in the school’s evolution.

Looking ahead, the Board will launch the next phase of strategic planning this fall, building on existing priorities and exploring how our campus can continue to support a dynamic student experience. In particular, we’ll consider ways to expand our spaces

Making history on the pitch, the boys’ soccer team achieved a milestone victory, winning the SoCal Regional State Championship – a first for Pacific Ridge. This epic run capped a dominant season, solidifying the squad’s place as one of the most accomplished teams in school history.

They weren’t the only ones lighting up the scoreboard. The boys’ basketball team made front-page news this year and brought home a CIF championship of their own, showcasing depth, determination, and dynamic play.

On the court, girls’ tennis standout Mila Ellingsen added to the trophy count, winning the Pacific League Singles Championship and demonstrating remarkable skill and focus throughout the season. Not to be outdone, the boys lacrosse team defended its title as Pacific League Champions, continuing a tradition of excellence.

Pacific Ridge School’s dedication and spirit were also recognized beyond the field, earning the Coastal Conference Battle of the Fans title for the fourth consecutive year — an accolade that celebrates school spirit and community engagement.

GLOBAL ADVENTURES

WASHINGTON, D.C.

8th

GRADE

AMERICAN CITIZENSHIP

Eighth graders explored their roles as citizens throughout this six-day visit to our nation's capital. Students reflected on impactful moments in America's history at the WWI, Vietnam, and Korean War memorials, honoring the legacies of those who served. They learned about change-makers in American history at the Lincoln, FDR, and MLK memorials. Throughout these experiences, they gained an understanding of the significance of the ongoing journey of democracy in our country.

9 TH GRADE BACKCOUNTRY ADVENTURE

Ninth graders traveled to the Grand Canyon and Coconino National Forest in Arizona, where they experienced diverse landscapes, including the famous red rocks of Sedona and the Ponderosa pine forests. During their time camping in the backcountry, students honed their collaboration and leadership skills amidst the geological wonderland. They skillfully navigated challenging hikes with the help of detailed maps and engaged in teamwork activities throughout the day. The ninth graders worked together to plan and cook their meals, explored creeks, kayaked on the Verde River, learned about native flora and fauna, and discovered ways to engage and entertain one another, all while maintaining positive spirits throughout a journey that encouraged them to step outside their comfort zones.

10 TH GRADE: CULTURAL IMMERSION IN COSTA RICA

Students ventured to Costa Rica to learn about culture, sustainability, and animal conservation. One group of 10 th graders joined forces with dedicated researchers and conservationists at the Camaronal National Wildlife Refuge to support the hatching of green sea turtles. They participated in beach cleanups, assisted staff in collecting turtle measurements, and monitored egg nests to ensure survival. As part of their cultural immersion, another group of students participated in homestays in the tranquil village of Mollejones, where they learned about local sugar cane production and helped prepare traditional meals. They explored the jungle through hikes to the nearby Cabécar community, learning firsthand about the history, customs, and lifestyle of the indigenous peoples of Costa Rica. Throughout their time along the worldfamous Pacuare River, students had the opportunity to stay in beautiful, remote eco-lodges nestled in nature, with outings dedicated to river rafting and ziplining through the beautiful jungle.

11TH AND 12TH GRADE

GLOBAL TRAVEL

Students in 11 th and 12 th grade chose from a variety of global travel learning experiences in destinations including Australia, Zanzibar, Victoria Falls, Croatia, Czechia and Austria, Patagonia, and South Korea.

ZANZIBAR

In the beautiful fishing village of Jambiani, PRS students met up with girls from our longtime Global Vantage Service Learning partners at Kenya’s Kibera Girls Soccer Academy (KGSA) through a cultural exchange trip. The two groups connected by sharing aspects of their cultures, including learning some Swahili. Students engaged in ongoing projects that evaluate the behaviors of dolphins and tourists, gaining insight into safe and ethical marine conservation practices. Their efforts also included conducting coral reef bleaching surveys and participating in critical mangrove reforestation projects. Students journeyed through the Jozani forest, where they were captivated by native biodiversity and the playfulness of the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkeys. To further immerse themselves in the local culture, students visited fish markets, seaweed farms, coconut artisans, and spice farms, forging friendships with their peers from around the world.

VICTORIA FALLS

Students traveled to Zimbabwe and Botswana to experience the breathtaking Victoria Falls. They stayed in secluded lodges within the heart of Hwange National Park, where they assisted in vital anti-poaching efforts to remove animal traps hidden in the savannah. Students witnessed stunning wildlife, including elephants at the watering hole, giraffes roaming, and lions feasting, all while deepening their understanding of the conservation efforts aimed at protecting these animals. Their adventure continued with a traditional Mokoro canoe tour along the Okavango Delta, where they learned about the area's beautiful and diverse wildlife and enjoyed up-close views of hippo pods. The group immersed themselves in native customs during community dinners, joining lively drum circles and tasting regional delicacies such as Mopane worms, sharing in the traditions of the locals.

SOUTH KOREA

Students traveled throughout South Korea to explore the country's rich history and modern innovations. They immersed themselves in ancient traditions by dressing in traditional attire and witnessing the regal changing of the guard ceremony at Gyeongbokgung Palace. They experienced the blend of South Korea's past and present through visits to the National History Museum of Korean Contemporary History, the Hyundai Museum, Namsan Tower, and a K-pop dance academy. The group also had the opportunity to visit the official Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea, providing a glimpse into the region's complex geopolitical landscape. They had the chance to sample a variety of traditional foods by exploring vibrant night markets and honing their culinary skills at a hands-on noodle cooking class. Additionally, students stayed at the peaceful Geumsansa Temple, where they learned from the resident monks, participated in serene meditation sessions, and enjoyed tea ceremonies.

I'm passionate about supporting the Annual Fund because it directly impacts the resources and opportunities available to current students, ensuring they have the same experiences that shaped my time as a Firebird. It's incredibly rewarding to see the continued growth and success of the school, and knowing my contribution helps foster that environment for future generations is why I contribute.

Unlike annual giving, endowment gifts are invested—only the earnings are used—creating a lasting source of income to enrich programs, expand access, and ensure that future generations of Firebirds benefit from the same excellent PRS experience.
