OurFallLuncheononWednesday,October29,wasafestivegatheringof around40peoplewhoenjoyedvisitingwithfriendsandcatchingupon activities.TheAlumniHouse,again,wasthesiteforourluncheon,and BonAppetitprovidedamplechickensalad,croissantsandwiches; vegetarianwrappedsandwiches;apastasalad;theirchampionlemonbars andCarmelita-chocolatebars;andbeverages.Whilewewereinside,we couldseethelovelyfallcolorsandbrightOctobersunlightoutside.


OurmainspeakerwasLauraGutierrez,AssociateProfessorofHistory,andChairoftheHistory Department,whosharedmajorfindingsfromhistoricalrecordsoftheBracerosemploymentprogram betweentheUnitedStatesandMexicofrom1942to1964.Theprogrambroughtfarmlaborersasguest workerstotheUnitedStatesfromMexicostartinginWorldWarIItosupportfarmersinharvestingand plantingcrops.HerpresentationfocusedontheearlypresenceoftheguestworkersintheStocktonarea,at first,tohelpwithharvestingsugarbeets.Theirworkcontinuedoverseveralyearswithmanylocalcrops asparagus,potatoes,sugarbeets,tomatoes,aswellasothercrops.Sheincludednewsstoriesandphotosto illustratethehousing,health,food,andpaymentdiscrepancies.Shealsosharedhowmenwereprocessed forentrytotheUnitedStatesandusedformedicalresearch.ThankstoProfessorGutierrezforherengaging presentationonthisprograminAmericanhistoryanditsinfluencetoday.
ThecurrentchairoftheAcademicCouncil,AbelFernandez,ProfessorofCivilEngineeringandchairof EngineeringManagement,providedasummaryofsomeoftheactivitiesoftheCouncilsinceSeptember.He highlightedworkconnectedwithourChiefFinancialOfficer,JamesWalsh,suchas,auniversity-wide reviewoffacultyandstaffcompensation;budgetmodelreviewforunitsandtheuniversity;andan administrativecoststudy.Healsocommentedonworkonsupportingfacultygovernanceandworking relationshipswiththeuniversitypresidentandtheRegents.
OnbehalfofourEmeritiSocietyBoard(ESB),GenePearsonreportedthatourboardwasawarding RoseannHannon,ProfessorEmeritainPsychology,aDistinguishedServiceAwardforherlongand exceptionalcontributionstotheworkoftheBoard.Shehasbeenaboardmemberfor13years,asa treasurer,newslettereditor,andon-goingmember.SherecentlymovedtoWashingtonstatetobenearher daughter.[MarilynDraheim]

AtaluncheonontheSundayof2025HomecomingWeekend,twoEmeritiSocietymembers,Richard TenazaandLynelleWiens,wereawardedAlumniAssociationFacultyMentorAward.FacultyMentor Awardsrecognizeprofessorswhoseoutstandingmentorship,dynamicteachingandindividualized supporthavecatalyzedacademicandcareersuccess.
RichardTenaza,ProfessorEmeritusofBiologicalSciences,guidedstudentsinwildliferesearchand experientiallearning,leadingsafarisandsupportingfieldstudiesinAfricaandIndonesia,helping studentsbetterunderstandtheworldwildlife.For20ofhis39yearsatPacific,heledstudentsonthetrip ofalifetime:exploringwildlifeineastAfricaforamonth.
LynelleWiens,ProfessorEmeritaofVoiceintheConservatoryofMusic,servedasprogramdirectorof voicedepartmentandanacademicadvisorformorethan24years.Shetaughtstudiovoice, vocalpedagogy,andItalian,FrenchandGermandictionclasses.Herstudentshavepursuedcareersas performers,musiceducators,musictherapistsandvoicefacultymembersatmajoruniversities.

TheAcademicCouncil(AC)hasmettwotimespriortoourCabbagesandKingseditionthisfall.Abel Fernandez,Professor,SchoolofEngineeringandComputerScience,anddepartmentchairforEngineering Management,isthenewChairforAC.ThepastchairisJustinLowe,AssociateProfessor,BenerdSchool, andChair-ElectisLoryLaughter,aprofessorinDentalHygienewithintheDugoniSchoolofDentistry.

GrowingupinQueensNewYork,whenIwaseightyearsold,Isufferedapartiallossof eyesightresultinginlegalblindness.Mymom,realizingthatmyinterestinsoundshould befostered,encouragedmetoworkwithreeltoreeltaperecordersandelectronic keyboardsbypurchasingrecordingequipmentandanelectronicorgan.Myfascinationwithsounddesign, taperecording,andmusicproductiongrew.Sincethen,Ihavededicatedmylifetotherecordingartsand musictechnology,alongwiththecreationofelectronicmusiccomposition.WhenImovedouttoCalifornia fromNewYorkin1978,IattendedDeltamusicprogram.Afterayearofstudy,therealityof visuallyconceptualizingmusicusingtraditionalnotationwasatotallyineffectiveuseofmytime.Sittingin amusicclasswithonly15-minutesofeartrainingand45-minutesofblackboardworkwasincredibly frustrating.Theonlywayformetocomposeandhearmymusicwasthrougha4-tracktaperecorderandan AppleIIcomputer.Then,in1980IopenedasmalleighttrackrecordingstudioinmyhomecalledFingers AudioProductions,andbeganexperimentingandcomposingwithkeyboardsynthesizers,multitracktape machines,andmicrophones.(Seephotos)

Hewasgoodnatured,wise,andcompassionate.Hebelievedinhelpingothersdiscovertheirpotentialand livedalifedevotedtoeducation,fairness,andlove.

HebeganteachingatPacificin1965asaLecturerinGeography.Forthenext34 yearshehelpedstudentsunderstandglobalandregionalclimatesinhisPhysical Geographycourse.HehelpedstudentsunderstandthedevelopmentofcitiesinhisUrbanGeographycourse. Hisregionalgeographycoursesintroducedstudentstotheclimatesandculturaldevelopmentofmanyparts oftheworld.Theyincluded:WesternEurope,EasternEuropeandtheSovietUnion,TheAmericanand CanadianWest,GeographyofCalifornia,GeographyofNorthandSouthAmerica,andtheGeographyof Asia.After34yearsatPacificRogerretiredin1999asaFullProfessorandwasgrantedEmeritusstatus andawardedtheOrderofPacificatthe1999Commencementceremonies.

WalterwasbornMarch22,1939inLondon,England.HisparentsHildeLiebes andMartinZimmermannhadleftGermanyandtraveledviaDenmarktoEngland.
Brazil.ItwasreportedthattheprominentBritishAmericanconductorand violinistYehudiMenuhinplayedwiththelittleboyontheship,encouraginghim tomovearound.
AfterashorttimeinBrazil,thefamilywassoonacceptedtomovetotheUS.
WalterwasraisedinBrentwoodinLosAngeles,CAandgraduatedfromUCLAwithaBachelorof ScienceinMathematics.HecontinuedhisstudiesatUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeleywherehe completedaPhDinTheoreticalPhysics.
Followingthecompletionofhisdegrees,WaltertaughtPhysicsatWellesleyCollegeinMassachusetts beforemovingtoStockton,CaliforniawhereheacceptedapositionatRaymondCollegeatthattime ificcampuswherehetaughtinthefieldsof mathematicsandscience.WhenRaymondCollegeclosed,hetransferredallofhisteachinginto UniversityofPacific,wherehetaughtvariousadvancedcoursesinthefieldofmathematics:calculus, differentialequationsandothercoursesdesignedforscienceandengineeringstudents.Hewasadevoted professorwithagenuineinterestinthesuccessofeachindividualstudentandspentmanyofficehours providingindividualhelptohisstudents.
Uponhisretirementin2009,WaltercontinuedtoteachsummermathematicscoursesattheUniversityof thePacificforafewyears.HeandhiswifeCynthiaalsotraveledinEurope.
Walteralsosoughtoutwaystoserveothersandstimulatehisthinking.Hevolunteeredforanorganization calledHICAP(HealthInsuranceCounselingandAdvocacyProgram),whichhefoundveryworthwhile. HeworkedasavolunteercounselorprovidingfreeinformationandcounselingtoseniorsaboutMedicare andrelateddrugbenefits.Thetrainingforsuchcounselingisverycomprehensiveandvolunteersarevery dedicated.Walterfoundthisworkchallengingandrewarding.
WalterremainedactiveintheEmeritiProgramforretiredprofessorsattheUniversityofthePacificand wasanactiveboardmember.
Walterwasalovinganddevotedfamilyman,whoalwaysmadetimeforanythinghisfamilyneeded.
HeissurvivedbyhiswifeCynthia;hisdaughterLara(Kwan),andgrandsonKaden;hissonEric(Kate) andgranddaughterDella;sisterAnn,nephewsBenandMichaelandtheirfamiliesinAustralia.
