In 2016 we exceeded our fundraising goals, raising almost $850,000 thanks to the generosity of our donors, fundraisers and several grants that were awarded.
The 6th International Symposium on Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma was held on September 24, 2016 at the UCLA Meyer & Renee Luskin Conference Center. Health care professionals met to learn about and discuss clinical therapies and research data to prevent, detect and treat malignant pleural mesothelioma. They were joined by students, mesothelioma patients and their families at this informative and educational conference. The Symposium was co-hosted CME Department at the David Geffen School of Medicine & The Pacific Mesothelioma Center
Symposium chair Dr. Robert B. Cameron discussed options for intraoperative adjuvant therapies and how they can supplement standard of care treatments through preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative therapeutic modalities. Additional presentation topics included an update on mesothelioma clinical trials, treatment options such as Cryoablation, Immunotherapy, Mesenchymal Stem Cells, HOX Genes, Targeting Dendritic Cells in Vivo, and East-West approaches to cancer.
4TH ANNUAL “THE GREATEST ESCAPE” MOTORCYCLE RIDE
The PMC held its fourth annual “The Greatest Escape” Motorcycle Ride, presented by Worthington & Caron, P.C., on July 24, 2016. The race originated as a tribute to “The Great Escape” movie, starring actor Steve McQueen, who died of mesothelioma. Since its inception, hundreds have gathered each year to honor those who have lost the fight against mesothelioma and to raise money for research. This year, the event raised $79,792 for mesothelioma research.
More than 200 riders, passengers, and attendees enjoyed a scenic ride that kicked off at the Glendale Harley-Davidson and traveled on to Newcomb’s Ranch in La Canada, CA. Led by All Cities Transportation’s escort officers, the riders enjoyed a safe and steady ride—with zero stops for traffic lights—while taking in breathtaking views of Los Angeles along the Angeles Crest Highway. Riders were joined by actress Kristy Swanson, Olympic Gold Medalist Lloyd Eisler, actor Larry Wilcox, and actor/professor Roger McGrath, who knew Steve McQueen personally.
5TH 5K WALK / HIKE FOR MESOTHELIOMA
The PMC celebrated the fifth anniversary of its annual 5K Walk/Hike for Meso on October 23, 2016, at the Paramount Ranch in Agoura Hills. Presented by Worthington & Caron, P.C, the event gathered over 350 walkers grouped in 24 teams to raise $122,000.
The walkers—consisting of family members and friends of those suffering from mesothelioma, as well as supporting organizations and individual walkers—had an opportunity to test their memory skills by remembering “meso awareness” statements that were dotted around the 5K course. Walkers that gave the first 10 correct answers received AMC movie tickets. Prior to the event, participants were also encouraged to fundraise on their own and compete for an engraved Top Fundraising Team award. After the Walk, participants enjoyed a catered lunch by local Agoura Hills favorite Italia Deli and treats from David’s Tea, Duverger Macaroons, Monster energy drinks, and Mustache Mike’s Italian Ice.
