All over the world, the establishment of controlled denominations of origin has been the natural consequence of the existence of products that have gained recognition and prestige among consumers. This is not precisely the case of Luján de Cuyo. Just like Malbec, our C.D.O. has a different, original story that makes it unique and unrepeatable.
The C.D.O. Luján de Cuyo was born in 1989, in times in which neither Malbec nor the region were famous in Argentina, and much less in the foreign market. It was in the worst possible context, during a severe crisis in the wine sector, when our current emblem variety was about to disappear, that the most significant event of the last 50 years of history of the Argentine wine industry took place, one of those moments that change everything. The C.D.O. Luján de Cuyo is not just the first wine C.D.O. to be established throughout the American continent, but it was also founded simultaneously with the certification of the first wine-related C.D.O. in Europe. This is a real milestone, a feat that is even more important when we revisit it at present.
Luján de Cuyo’s current situation is the consequence of the effort and dedication of a team of visionaries and pioneers I am proud to be part of and, mostly, a group of individuals who were connoisseurs of the wine sector and sought to retrieve the vinegrowing activity carried out by immigrants. The latter were those who successfully proved the potential of this terroir to make premium quality wines. The answer we were looking for laid in said old plants, in that invaluable genetic material, in that centennial agricultural legacy and in that traditional winemaking method. The creation of the C.D.O. is just the result of the tenacious will of highlighting the importance of that time in the past that was about to become extinct, to retrieve it and share it with the rest of the world. This is why Luján de Cuyo links its past and present, always reminding us that the challenge of the winemaking industry is always our greatest motivation to look into the future, without forgetting our journey.
With over 30 years of work and perseverance, this is just the beginning of a legacy that transcends time and generations. Out of respect for the land, nature, our origins and the traditions that make our winemaking industry so unique.
Over the years, we have been tenacious and persistent in seeking the most accomplished expression of the Argentine Malbec and placing the terroir of Luján de Cuyo in the internationally recognized position we have always dreamed of. That’s where we are heading.
