TORTA to host premier of Biketown documentary

T

illamook Off Road Trail Alliance is having a celebration on Friday, Aug. 5 — they are hosting a movie screening of “Biketown,” a documentary that will feature TORTA’s goal of bringing a mountain bike trail to South Tillamook County. Their story will be one of several as the movie chronicles towns who have, with varying success stories, brought trails to their community. The movie screening is a fundraising effort that seeks to raise money for a new bike project planned for the Nestucca Valley School District’s K-8 school and the planned Buzzard Butte Trail Network in the Sandlake Recreation District, a trail system that will include approximately 35 miles of trail with opportunties for all skill levels and experience. A skills park is also being planned that is being hailed as an opportunity for bikers to improve their skills. The movie, which is presented by Freehub Magazine, will run from 6-9 p.m. at Kiawanda Community Center, 34600 Cape Kiwanda Dr., Pacific City. Though there isn’t an admission charge, organizers are suggesting that those attending buy a pair of raffle tickets ($5 each). Attendees can also purchase five raffle tickets for $20. Up for grabs will be products from Specialized Bikes, Maxxis Tires and IMBA. Providing something to wet your whistle at the event will be 10 Barrel Brewing Co., who will be selling their beer. Movie snacks will also be available for purchase. The BBTN has a budget of $2 million. To date, TORTA has been selected to receive $310,000 in grand funds from Travel Oregon, State Parks and Tillamook County grant programs. At the movie fundraiser, TORTA and partners will be there to answer any and all questions regarding what they have been working on and their current progress. Making a presentation on behalf of TORTA will be Josh Venti. And representing the upcoming project at NVSD’s K-8 school will be Superintendent Misty Wharton. And the fun will continue after the showing as TORTA is also sponsoring an afterparty (21 and over) at The Sportsman’s Pub and Grub. There supporters will be encouraged to enjoy the music of HELGA, a three-piece band based in Bend. For more information about the film, visit biketownfilm.com.

N-

Program, said it is also unclear in which state or what coastal area the gear was from. The dead orca was spotted a second time near the mouth of the Coquille River, and fishermen recovered the gear. Both ODFW and Oregon State University examined and evaluated the gear. “The gear wasn’t marked with the owner’s identity, so it is not legal gear as per Oregon regulations. In fact, the gear is not consistent with regulations in Washington or California either,” Braby said. “The recovered gear had a sporttype crab pot and was relatively unfouled,

suggesting it was deployed recently.” Recreational crab pots or rings used in the open ocean water and bays must have surface buoys for buoyancy so the gear can be retrieved. By regulation, the buoys must be marked with the owners first and last name or business name and at least one of the following: permanent address, phone number, ODFW ID number or vessel identification number. The information must be visible, legible, and permanent. This regulation does not apply to recreational crabbing from piers, jetties, or the beach where the pot is attached to shore while it is fishing.

ODFW marine biologists and fishery managers continue their work to decrease whale entanglements in crabbing gear with good success. The frequency of entanglements has lessened over the last few years across the West Coast. However, a recreational fisherman recently spotted a dead orca with crabbing gear wrapped around its tail about 25 miles off Newport. Caren Braby says it is unknown if the orca was dead prior to being entangled or died because it was entangled in the crab gear. Marked surface buoys help managers identify which fisheries and areas along the coast are associated with marine life entanglements. More importantly, proper marking of buoys and floats helps managers develop ways to prevent entanglements in the future. The public is encouraged to report entangled whales or other marine animals to NOAA Fisheries’ Entanglement Reporting Hotline 1-877-SOS-WHAL (1-877-767-9425) or the U.S. Coast Guard on VHF CH-16. Photographs and videos showing entangled gear is helpful as is a general location and species if known.

St. Joseph’s Catholic Church to celebrate 100th anniversary By TIM HIRSCH of the Sun

A

fter a century of serving believers of South Tillamook County, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church is ready to celebrate. On Saturday, Aug. 13, which will be 100 years to the day from the church’s dedication in 1922, the congregation will celebrate the milestone with a 10:30 a.m. mass celebrated by Father Angelo Te from Sacred Heart Church in Tillamook, followed by a meal for parishioners in the Parish center at noon. Then, from 2-4 p.m., the church will welcome the community with an open house for the public as well as offer church tours. At the celebration, four priests will be “concelebrating” at the mass — a collection of clergy that will include those that have lead the church in the past. Though the church is commemorating its first century with a celebration 100 years after its dedication, it actually held its first service on Christmas Eve in 1921. One connection to that first service is the music coordinator for the anniversary celebration. He is the grandson of one of the women that sang music in the church’s first service. St. Joseph’s Catholic Church began in a community where there was a significant Catholic community — including those in the dairy industry. It also was a situation where the closest Catholic church was miles away. “It was a very long way to Tillamook in those days,” event coordinator Karen Petersen told the Sun. “The local people here held raffles and card parties to raise money for the church.” The church’s impetus was actually a few years prior to 1921 when, in 1917, the

ST. JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Cloverdale will be celebrating its 100th anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 13 with a mass followed by an open house from 2-4 p.m. that the community is invited to attend. The church is located at 34560 Parkway Dr. in Cloverdale.

Benedictine Fathers of Mt. Angel guided the process. As well, Father Hildebrand Melchior, who was assistant pastor at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tillamook, helped fulfill “Grandma Jenck’s” dream of building a church in Cloverdale. Even Melchior rolled up his sleeves to make the church happen. When, owing to just how steep the steeple was, no one wanted to install shingles, Melchior took up his THE ALTAR at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cloverdale. talkback Let’s get Betsy on the Ballot To the Editor: Betsy Johnson as governor is the best thing that could happen for Tillamook County. She understands our issues, needs and concerns, and she has proven herself to be a powerful ally for our community. She is personable and responsive and she gets things done. In her twenty years as our state senator, Betsy helped countless local individuals, families, farms, businesses and organizations. I don’t know how many people she went to bat for during COVID who couldn’t get their unemployment, but it was A LOT. Literally hundreds of Tillamook County residents have Betsy’s cell phone number because she gave it to us when we called her for help. Imagine what it will mean for Tillamook County to have a governor who knows us and loves us and will take our calls. Just think about that for a minute. Betsy is the only candidate for governor who has deep, committed ties to our community. Betsy’s campaign kickoff in Astoria was a who’s who of current and past elected leaders including county commissioners, state representatives, mayors and city council members from at least three counties, both Democrats and Republicans. Elected leaders support Betsy because we’ve worked with her and we know how powerful she is, how effective and accessible and fair, and how hard she’ll fight to help us. Some of the most important work ahead is bridging the ever widening gap between Democrats vs Republicans, liberals vs conservatives including within our own parties, urban vs rural, etc., working together instead of working against each other. We are much stronger together than divided. Betsy is the only candidate for governor who will lead a bipartisan state government, bringing together both parties, urban and rural, the best ideas and the Christmas bazaar, the church’s Altar Society contributes to a number of local — and international — efforts including a Uganda mission, local high school scholarships and food pantries, the Nestucca Valley Backpack Program, and the South County Good Neighborhood Program. They contribute about $5,000 per year. The Altar Society dates back to Jan. 1, 1925. THE PANDEMIC’S EFFECT Like many churches, the pandemic impacted the church in many ways. “The parish was severely impacted by the pandemic because, by now, most of our parishioners are in the over 60 age group,” Petersen said. “We were unable to hold services probably for the most of two years. Even now, I see people participating in

brightest minds to solve problems we all share as Oregonians. Betsy’s candidacy is a rare opportunity to elect an unaffiliated governor who will truly represent everyone. In fact, she would be the first woman unaffiliated governor in the history of the nation. Some of my Democrat friends are worried that Betsy will peel away enough moderate Dem votes to make a Republican win a possibility. I don’t think so. I think a lot of Oregonians are sick of hyper partisanship and ready for a change. Betsy is the only candidate who is coming up the middle, offering refuge and hope to both parties and to the vast numbers of unaffiliated/undecided voters. In a local meeting of bipartisan Betsy supporters, a prominent Republican farmer shared recently that he hopes that his fellow Republicans recognize that Drazen can’t win in Oregon, and understand that their only real choices are Betsy or Kotek. I have yet to vote for a candidate with whom I agree 100 percent, and this election is no exception. Betsy is the candidate I believe will do the most good for Oregon and for Tillamook County. That’s why I support Betsy. Go to runbetsyrun.com to sign the petition to get Betsy on the ballot for governor. Contact Jerry Dove at jdovetillanglers@gmail.com to join the Tillamook County Betsy Brigade. Let›s get Betsy on the ballot for governor! Mary Faith Bell Nehalem, Ore. Pacific City Sun welcomes reader feedback. Letters to the Editor are published on a first-come, first-serve basis, and are subject to the availablity of space. Letters should be concise and relevant to South Tillamook County. Letters should be no longer than 350 words and may be edited for length, grammar and style. Submit your letters to tim@pacificcitysun.com for consideration. Thanks for reading the Pacific City Sun and participating in this opportunity to share your thoughts and opinions with our many readers.

A DRAW TO THE COMMUNITY AND BEYOND Though the church still enjoys its faithful regulars, Petersen says its appeal goes beyond those committed members. “It draws visitors from all over because of the old-fashioned beauty of the church,” she said. The church holds mass weekly on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. with Father Angelo Te from Sacred Heart Church officiating. A Friday morning mass is also held. “I want to emphasize that everyone is welcome,” Petersen said. “We’ll have tours inside, photo albums and a live show of our history as well as cookies and teas from Grateful Bread Bakery and Restaurant.”

olfers visiting and living on the Central Oregon Coast once again are invited to get into the swing of things as the Neskowin Beach Golf Course opened for the season on Friday, July 22. The course is now open with a short 9-hole course. “It’s very much a playable course,” said Missy Moss, clubhouse manager. “People have been excited to get back on Neskowin Beach Golf Course and play.” While the whole course, which is affectionally known as the “jewel of the Oregon Coast,” is seen as a fun way to experience golf just a block from the beach, she said the 7th tee is amongst the course’s special elements. “As you hit from the top of the hills and onto the green, there’s incredible views,” Moss said. “The uniqueness of the course is our location, and it’s playable in just an hour and a half.”

Players are also encouraged to play a full 18 holes by golfing the course twice. Open daily, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., the course also features a clubhouse where one can find merchandise as well as snacks, beer, wine, cider and other non-alcoholic beverages. Cost to play the 9-hole short course is $18. It is recommended to call ahead at 503-392-3377 to get a tee time. The course also welcomes groups. Halibut angling days added to Central Oregon Coast “Similar to last year, winds and ocean conditions hampered effort and catches of Pacific halibut, leaving plenty of quota remaining,” said Lynn Mattes, recreational groundfish and halibut project leader. “These additional openings give anglers more opportunity to go after the highly prized halibut.” Mattes said the Central Oregon Coast Subarea nearshore and Southern Oregon Subarea seasons remain unchanged. ODFW has also added additional Columbia River Subarea days. They are Aug. 19, 25, and 28 and Sept, 3, 3 and 23. For more information and a map of the subareas visit dfw.state.or.us/MRP/finfish/ halibut/seasonmaps/2022_hbt_map.pdf.

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has added more summer all-depth Pacific halibut angling days to the Central Oregon Coast and Columbia River subareas. ODFW, in coordination with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, determined there is enough quota remaining in both states to allow six more days of fishing. The Columbia River Subarea runs from Leadbetter Point, Wash. to Cape Falcon, Ore. The Central Oregon Coast Subarea summer all-depth season begins Aug. 4 and will now be open every Thursday through Saturday or until the quota is met. Previously, this subarea (Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain) was open every other Thursday through Saturday.

Please Don't Post on Utility Poles A utility pole may seem like the perfect place to post a notice, however, it creates a serious safety hazard. Nails, tacks, or staples used to attach objects to poles can damage a lineworker's safety equipment as they climb. Puncturing wooden poles to post objects could cause a pole to degrade more quickly, which reduces pole stability and increases the risk of a pole falling over if struck by a vehicle or during a severe weather event.
