Page 1

DEAR FRIENDS & SUPPORTERS,

The 2024–25 season was a powerful reflection of Pacific Chorale’s resilience, creativity, and enduring commitment to choral excellence in Orange County From unforgettable, sold-out concerts to expanded community outreach in Garden Grove public schools through the Boys & Girls Club, we are proud of our accomplishments this past year – accomplishments made possible by your support Your generosity has helped bring the profound beauty and impact of choral music to even more people in our community It is thanks to you that Pacific Chorale is poised for a period of tremendous growth in the years to come

On behalf of Pacific Chorale’s singers, Board, and staff, we sincerely thank you for your loyal support and dedication

With gratitude,

It is an honor to celebrate this remarkable year of continued artistic excellence and meaningful community impact alongside you, our donor family It is your support that has sustained the artistic excellence that defines Pacific Chorale Thanks to your generosity, we brought innovative new programs to life, such as To the Hands, which explores displacement and our shared humanity We delivered outstanding performances of choral masterworks including Mozart’s Requiem, which became the highestgrossing non-holiday concert in Pacific Chorale’s history at Segerstrom Concert Hall Your support powered education initiatives like Pacific Chorale Academy and Choral Camp that nurture the next generation of artists and community leaders

The achievements highlighted in the following pages are a testament to your generosity and dedication - we look forward to building on that momentum in the seasons to come On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for your commitment to Pacific Chorale

Sincerely,

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

“Your support helped bring this season’s repertoire to life: works that radiated emotion, beauty, depth, humor and even whimsy. The compositions I programmed demanded tremendous technical and artistic mastery from Pacific Chorale’s singers. Because of your commitment to Pacific Chorale, our musicians delivered breathtaking performances, seamlessly shifting from ethereal whispers to brilliant walls of sound in repertoire ranging from Gregorian chant to post-minimalist works.”

MOZART REQUIEM (MAY 24, 2025)

This unforgettable evening marked Pacific Chorale’s highest-attended and highest-selling concert outside of our holiday programs, a testament to the enduring power and beauty of Mozart’s final masterpiece

Pacific Chorale was honored to share the stage with our closest artistic partner Pacific Symphony and an extraordinary group of soloists—all drawn from the Chorale’s own roster of vocal artists—for this exceptional close to the season

“I was in heaven seeing and hearing [the Requiem] done so beautifully. I legitimately cried through most of it. So beautiful and lovingly performed!” – AUDIENCE PATRON

“If you need an infusion of good tidings... you’ve come to the right place.”
– SF CLASSICAL VOICE ON TIS THE SEASON!

HOLIDAY CONCERTS

Carols by Candlelight and Tis the Season! reached new heights with four sold-out performances and nearly 4,900 attendees filling our two beloved venues with joy, tradition, and the warmth of the season

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS CONTINUED

TO THE HANDS

(SEPTEMBER 14-15, 2024)

To the Hands, a significant artistic concept in the life of the Chorale, was premiered last fall and developed into a choral-theatrical film with a private screening at the Lido Theater in Newport Beach in March Through a tactile blend of live performance, choreography, and immersive design, To the Hands is both mirror and refuge, blurring the lines between concert, ritual, and cinema The film centers displacement and homelessness through the sensory languages of music, movement, and light The result is a reflection on human fragility and strength A reckoning with care and complicity And an invitation to imagine a world in which we hold and heal each other’s wounds, not in theory, but in practice The Chorale eagerly anticipates the film’s public release in 2026

HANDEL’S ISRAEL IN EGYPT

(MARCH 29, 2025)

Featuring Pacific Chorale’s chamber choir, this performance brought the biblical story of Exodus to life with soaring double choruses and vivid storytelling, a powerful reminder of the expressive depth and grandeur of Baroque music We were thrilled to reunite with Bach Collegium San Diego and its Artistic Director Ruben Valenzuela and share the stage with such phenomenal musicians and soloists

“Robert Istad and the Pacific Chorale (in all its configurations—large to small) are a GIFT to Orange County!”

– AUDIENCE PATRON

“The Pacific Chorale was stellar in their range and virtuosity. From the hushed reverence of “Te decet hymnus” in the Introit, they transitioned seamlessly to the thunderous “Dies irae” with spine-tingling precision and power. The eight-part “Sanctus” fugue, in all its glorious magnificence, was enough to make a believer of an atheist.” – TRUMAN

GUEST APPEARANCES

(2024-25)

Regular season appearances with Pacific Symphony included Messiah, Lunar New Year, Carmina Burana, and Verdi’s Requiem We were honored to salute Carl St Clair’s 35th Anniversary Season with these performances, especially the Verdi, which marked Carl’s 166th performance conducting Pacific Chorale We were also thrilled to headline a surprise appearance at the Symphony Gala on May 31, and to make Carl St Clair an honorary member of the Chorale

In December, the Chorale returned for the first time in decades to perform for the Segerstrom Center’s Candlelight Dinner fundraising event

In February, the chamber choir had the pleasure of performing Caroline Shaw’s To the Hands for the composer herself as part of the Laguna Beach Music Festival, hosted by the Philharmonic Society of Orange County

CHORAL FESTIVAL

(AUGUST 10, 2024)

The 16th Annual Choral Festival brought together 300 singers from across the country and abroad for a 3-day choral intensive, culminating in a powerful, free performance for over 1,250 community members This highly anticipated summer program was made possible by Phillip N and Mary A Lyons, Segerstrom Center for the Arts, the City of Costa Mesa’s Arts Grant program, and donors like you whose dedication to live choral artistry keeps this tradition alive

C WANG, CLASSICAL VOICE

Pacific Chorale’s Choral Festival is more than just a free summer concert—it’s a place of healing, joy, and human connection. For many, it’s a meaningful way to be part of something bigger than themselves.

We spoke with Diana Hensley, a retired teacher, school counselor, and practicing therapist, who has sung in the Festival Chorus every summer since 2008. Her story highlights the Festival’s powerful impact—not only for those who sing, but for the broader Orange County community.

A CHORUS OF COMMUNITY: DIANA HENSLEY REFLECTS ON THE IMPACT OF CHORAL FESTIVAL

NATALIE: What keeps you coming back to Choral Festival year after year?

DIANA: Having been a therapist my whole life, there are not a lot of things where I feel I can “put my whole self” into something, emotionally speaking But when I sing at the Choral Festival, and under Rob Istad’s leadership, I can put my whole self into the music There are few things in this world where you can experience something like this I get energized from the rehearsals and I love singing with that many people That’s why I keep coming back

NATALIE: Can you share a moment from a past Choral Festival weekend that really moved you—something that reminds you why this event matters?

DIANA: The first year I sang in the Choral Festival, my whole life had changed I had lost my husband and retired from my job as a teacher on the very same day But the people I met at the Festival that year were so loving, and so caring The singers that participate are people who care on the deepest level that one can care If we are all here to spread love, then I don’t know a better way to do it than at Choral Festival

NATALIE: What would you say to someone considering supporting Choral Festival financially?

DIANA: Any support for Choral Festival—from sponsoring a rehearsal to covering the costs of sheet music—is an investment in your community: younger generations, older generations, anyone who likes to sing You are doing something to bond your community together, and even to reunite families who see each other once a year at this Festival Choral Festival is for the community, by the community of Orange County, and it is so important that it continues

Diana’s story is just one powerful example of how Pacific Chorale’s Choral Festival fosters connection and uplifts our community through music The Festival not only nurtures individual artistry—it strengthens the cultural fabric of Orange County With your support, we can continue creating transformative programs that unite people, inspire growth, and enrich our community

Operating Surplus / (Deficit) ($318,780)*

Pacific Chorale has been operating at a deficit due to ambitious post-pandemic expansion and increasing production, artistic, and labor expenses Unrestricted cash reserves from special one-time gifts have been used to bridge the current operating gap The Board of Directors is undertaking a critical Sustainability Plan over the next three seasons to bring revenues in line with expenses, primarily through increased private support and the implementation of a robust major gifts program

Major Investment In Chorale Fundraising $240,426

In partnership with CCS Fundraising, Pacific Chorale completed a comprehensive six-month development program assessment and major gifts strategy implementation to enhance our fundraising efforts and unlock significant donor potential Financial support for this critical work came from a Board-designated fund, allowing us to engage a larger portion of our high-capacity donors and tap into over 3,000 ticket-buyers who have yet to donate

We now have a clear path to grow our annual contributed revenue from $1M to $3M in the next five years.

For Jim and Karen McBride, choral music has always been a passion. Jim first sat in on Pacific Chorale rehearsals in the early 70’s and soon found himself on the roster in the bass section. By the late 70’s Karen had also joined the Chorale.

A CHORUS ACROSS GENERATIONS: THE McBRIDES’ COMMITMENT TO PACIFIC CHORALE’S ENDOWMENT

Together they built a lifetime of memories — including touring with their daughter Jennifer (also a Chorale member) to Germany, Austria, Hungary, China, and Eastern Europe where they cemented several lifetime friendships with people they met Now, Jim and Karen are dedicated to ensuring the future of Pacific Chorale for the next generation by supporting its Endowment Fund

NATALIE OSWALD: How does supporting the Endowment align with your values?

BRIDE: We support the groups in Orange County that have given us the most, and for us that has been Pacific Chorale Supporting the Endowment ensures longevity and allows us former members of the choir to give back in a meaningful way Rather than make one lump-sum contribution, Karen and I have chosen to give to the Endowment Fund in increments over a period of five years

Do you still contribute annually to the Chorale, in addition to your Endowment gift?

Absolutely We’ve given annually for years and began supporting the Endowment once we were financially able If you give a dollar to the annual fund, your generosity lasts a year If you give it to the Endowment, it lasts

What would you say to those considering a gift to the Endowment?

Giving to the Endowment is more than a donation — it’s an investment in the future of Pacific Chorale If the music you hear during a concert reaches into your soul, making an Endowment gift in addition to your annual gift is a powerful and lasting commitment to the continued growth and preservation of the choral art form in Orange County

Pacific Chorale’s endowment is valued at $10.1 MILLION as of June 30, 2025 which conservatively yields about $425,000 in annual funding for our artistic and educational programs.

Principal investments are protected and preserved in perpetuity through board-approved draw policies, allowing an annual withdrawal of no more than 5% on the 3-year trailing average of the fund

Due to sustained donor contributions over the last 15 years and excellent investment management policies, the endowment in recent years has begun to provide more than $400,000 in annual funding to support our mission
