Executive Message W

ith competence, conscience, and compassion, PACE aims to build community and be the leading provider of readily deployed, practical and implementable solutions for supporting individuals on the autism spectrum. As developmental centers have closed, more children on the spectrum must now rely on home-based services. Similarly, more adults on the autism spectrum are staying at home as the options for their care become increasingly limited. The most successful solution is to provide parent/caregiver support methods at home to ensure a higher quality of life. PACE is looking to provide this in-home support for parents, helping them to build the skills from within.

PACE is in the process of preparing such a program, which we call Project Porchlight. This program is designed to provide in-home support for parents and caregivers on day-to-day routine tasks and challenges. The platform is highly focused on direct usable strategies for delivering specific solutions from a collection of online modules that take 3-5 minutes to complete. This is also a hybrid platform that offers direct concentrated group workshops on specific collections of module topics for more hands-on experience and collaboration. With the addition of Project Porchlight, PACE will expand the high-quality services we already offer through our school, children’s services and residential program, allowing us to connect, support and educate throughout the larger community.

Almost all government funding and grant dollars are focused exclusively on supporting the individual with developmental disabilities, with very little monies available for parent training and support.

However, a successful quality of life for individuals with disabilities depends greatly on having a community of qualified support. The Porchlight Project aims to build that competence and compassion in raising a collective higher conscience in the community. Our goal is to supply consistent and dependable resources, and to provide much needed structure in the lives of those who live with autism.

Once Porchlight is implemented, neighborhoods would be able to come together and discuss who has had success with the model and those who need more help would be able to attain it. This program will open up a forum, and provide workable solutions for those on the autism spectrum. We thank our many supporters for allowing us to implement our innovative programs and services. In May of 2013, PACE reopened its second children’s group home, Morehouse, using funds donated at the 2013 Golf Classic. Morehouse is a 4-bedroom home that provides 24/7 care for children on the autism spectrum between the ages of 6-18.

The 2012 Harvest Moon Gala raised over $57,000 in funds during the “Fund-A-Need” bidding which were used to sustain the Marcia Goldman Mission Fund. This fund enabled us to replace the manual driveway gate at the PACE School with an electronic one, among many other much needed capital improvements.

Morehouse

Lauren Bevilacqua, Music Therapist, is providing the PACE School and preschool with regular weekly music classes to great success. Lauren’s efforts were the focus of a 2012 San Jose Mercury News Wish Book article.

The donations raised through this program helped to expand the PACE music program.

In April 2013, Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley and the Cupertino Rotary came together to provide rehab and painting at our Sunny Days Preschool / PACE Connections building. PACE thanks the Rotary and Rebuilding Together for their ongoing support of our programs.

Music Therapy

The Color Me Rad 5k Race in San Jose made PACE the beneficiary for the Sept. 2012 race, providing over $20,000 in funding for programs and services.

Rebuilding Together at Sunny Days

PACE is very pleased to have received a United Way grant for 2013-2016 to fund the launch of our Project Porchlight. Porchlight will be a series of open-source free-access training modules for parents of children with autism spectrum disorders.

The PACE Youth Leadership Committee (YLC) held two anti-bullying workshops in the spring of 2013, called Operation Enable. This program was created to spread awareness to young people about the harm bullying causes to those on the autism spectrum.

Mahalo House was enhanced with a new backyard in 2013, thanks to funds raised early in the year. A local landscaper designed the garden specifically for those on the autism spectrum, and Boy Scout, Corban gathered volunteers and installed the plants.

Lola the Therapy Dog visits Sunny Days Preschool on a regular basis. Marcia Goldman, PACE supporter and past School Program Director brings Lola and reads stories to the children and everyone has a great time.

The PACE Impact The PACE School Serving students ages 6-22 who live with moderate to severe autism

Residential Homes 24 hour care in six group homes for residents aged 6-59

We are very pleased to have received funding from 2013 Golf Tournament donors which enabled us to reopen Morehouse, our children’s home in Cupertino.

The home reopened in April 2013 and we had a full house of six children by early October. Sabra Nakamoto is the Head Administrator at the home which has received excellent reviews on one of the residents from his teacher: “Staff there is good at keeping the lines of communication open. The Morehouse staff is quickly responsive to any needs we express. I did visit the home and viewed the room and the very safe, homey situation. It is a good placement for {the student} with others his age as well as older students. It is wonderful that this type of home is available for students with {special} needs. I like the neighborhood surroundings that make Morehouse even more of a home like everyone else’s.”

Children’s Services: Faces An intensive behavioral program for children aged 2-10 in Redwood City

A parent describes her experience with the intensive early intervention therapy based on the science of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) offered at Faces: “I remember praying for her to just say mom, and the first time she did was joyous. I don’t think she would be where she is now without the support she has had. Moms depend on those who care for our children to tell us every detail of their day.

Our kids can’t tell us themselves.

Children’s Services: Connections An affect-based early intervention program in San Jose

Our Connections / Sunny Days Preschool in San Jose is an affect-based early intervention program established in 2004.

Ashley Koepplin is the Manager of the Preschool: “In the end, it’s about the people, not the program. Joey had issues with transitions, as many kids on the spectrum do. The staff at Sunny Days was very good about picking up on that and giving Joey the time he needed to transition from home to school and at pickup time. While at Sunny Days, we felt that Joey was safe and that he progressed. Ashley went from being a teacher to being a friend. That’s not what we signed up for but were thrilled to have it! To a family that didn’t have any answers – that’s what we got from PACE. That level of help and interaction.”
