Sometimes it seems all about the preparation—the two years of planning, the hundreds of hours of fine tuning, the weekends of seminars, PHRF ratings, inspections, and lots of checklists.

Then you are racing, maybe seasick for a couple of days, perhaps suffering from lack of sleep, but part of that happy few who have the opportunity to live their special dream of sailing on the open ocean.

Welcome to the 17th running of the “Fun Race to Hawaii.”

The Pacific Cup has something for everyone, from the serious and experienced racer to the casual offshore cruiser. This is what makes the Pacific Cup special. There is room for everyone! Our volunteers include some of the most experienced sailors in the world willing to share their knowledge and expertise. Everyone involved volunteers their time to provide a safe, fun, and fair race.

Since first joining the Pacific Cup in 1994, I have been in awe of what it takes to put on an event of this nature and the preparation it takes to get all of our boats and sailors safely to the finish line in Kaneohe. This year we are especially mindful of the importance of continually improving our skills in the use of safety equipment, navigation, and communications.

We created an on-line, up to date race handbook authored by race experts and sailing industry professionals who contributed valuable articles in their areas of expertise. The Pacific Cup Offshore Academy pulled all of the information together into four cohesive seminars to teach our racers the fundamentals of ocean racing and to fine-tune the knowledge of returning race veterans. The introduction of break-out sessions allowed our participants to ask personalized questions of the experts. The result, we hope, is more interaction among our racers and better educated offshore sailors.

During the years I’ve been associated with the Pacific Cup, I have been honored to become close friends with most of the race volunteers. Not only with some of the professionals, but individuals who volunteer year after year to make sure our event is the best it can be. It takes many volunteer hours to mentor skippers; inspect boats; organize parties; coordinate escort boats; man/woman the race committee and communications. It still amazes me how most of these individuals can volunteer year after year and never tire of putting their best foot forward for our racers. We’ve seen race years where we had to turn away boats after reaching our limit of 70 and others when as few as 40 boats have raced. However, nothing dims the enthusiasm of our volunteers and participants.

It is because we are living our dream of being on the open ocean that we want to share the knowledge and skills that allowed us to get there. For many of us, that is where we are at our best and ocean racing is what demands the best of us. Play hard, race safely, take care of each other, and celebrate with your friends, family, and fellow racers when you finish. We look forward to seeing you in Kaneohe!

You will find our club is the perfect location to unwind and chill out after your recent finish of the very challenging Pacific Cup Race. Whether you desire sipping cool Mai Tais at our bar, playing some tennis, or just laying out by the pool, our members and staff will do everything in their power to insure you feel welcome and enjoy our Hawaiian hospitality.

Your host committees have arranged a full week of events to keep you, your crewmates, friends, and family in the Hawaiian spirit here at KYC. However, you would be remiss if you didn’t take the opportunity to explore Kaneohe Bay, spend a day at the “Sand Bar,” or take a drive around the scenic windward side of our island.

Additionally, Oahu may be a small island but there is a plethora of sights to see and activities to experience. Please see our volunteers at the Pacific Cup Information Desk should you require directions or suggestions for a day trip.

They are located near the lounge and will be thrilled to help.

Finally, if you haven’t had enough sailing, join the KYC Bulkhead Fleet for an exciting “around the cans” race in the bay every Thursday evening, or better yet, consider participating in this year’s Kauai Channel Race that, for the first time, starts in Kaneohe Bay and finishes at Nawiliwili, Kauai on August 10th.

The flag officers, board of directors, membership, and staff of Kaneohe Yacht Club wish you a safe and speedy crossing. Our escort boats will be at the finish line to guide you through the reefs to a safe mooring, where a lei greeting and appropriate adult beverages - for those who choose to partake - await you and your thirsty crew. The History of the Pacific Cup

Early Races: Ballena Bay to Nawiliwili n January 1979, Hal Nelson approached Ballena Bay Yacht Club Commodore Vytas Pazemenas with the idea of starting a low-key, fun race for fully-crewed boats from San Francisco to Hawaii. The first single-handed race to Hawaii had just been successfully completed the previous summer, and the club had a nucleus of members interested in ocean racing, so the timing appeared to be right.

Berthing in the islands was tight, but a workable finish location seemed to be Nawiliwili on the southeast corner of Kauai.

With the support of a small but enthusiastic group of volunteers from the Nawiliwili Yacht Club a finish line was found. This small group of six put the race together originally, but interest increased rapidly and more volunteers showed up.

Forty yachts started the first Pacific Cup Race on June 15, 1980. This was one of the roughest races to Hawaii and only 32 of the boats finished. The three Santana 35s in the race all had damage to their rudders during the first several days. Friendship was picked up by a Navy ship and Raccoon Straights returned to San Francisco with water pouring in a cracked rudder bearing, leaving Wild Hair the only Santana to finish in Hawaii.

The 63-foot yawl Corsair retired from the race and was lost on a shoal on her way back. After the rough weather of the first few days, the winds diminished and only Merlin, the 67-foot Lee Custom, had the speed to outrun the high-pressure area, which moved down on the rest of the fleet. She reached Nawiliwili more than four days ahead of the rest of the fleet, to win first-to-finish as well as first-on-corrected-time.

In 1982, the competition intensified among the big boats, although the number of boats racing under the International Ocean Racing (IOR) rule had declined to eight boats from 13 in 1980. Merlin was there again and beat her previous record by 1 hour and 28 minutes in elapsed time but was only able to place sixth on corrected time. The race was won by Temptress, a Swede 55, in the PHRF division and overall, with Zamazaan winning the IOR division.

In 1984 Merlin again beat her old record and set a new record in elapsed time for the Pacific Cup of 9 days, 7 hours and 49 minutes. The winners on corrected time were Surefire in the IOR division and Steve Rander’s Magic Carpet in PHRF. In the newly added doublehanded division, Light’n Up won, arriving only six hours behind Magic Carpet.

In 1986 Merlin again set a new elapsed time record of 8 days, 14 hours, 53 minutes, followed by Swiftsure III only 40 minutes later, and Charley less than six hours later. Magic Carpet won on corrected time in 11 days, 9 hours while Sweet Okole won the IOR division and the Pacific Cup as well.

Reorganization: PCYC is started and a new finish is found By the end of the 1986 race the Pacific Cup was well established. The attraction of the Pacific Cup as a race for 8 Pacific Cup 2012

cruisers as well as racers, and as the only offshore race out of San Francisco, made it increasingly popular. However, the Ballena Bay Yacht Club was finding it more difficult to administer what was turning into a major event with volunteer help - especially in a club with a number of competing activities.

The 1986 race had taxed the facilities of the Nawiliwili harbor as well, and a number of sailors had begun to talk about some other finishing point in Hawaii. It began to look as if the race might fade away unless someone could organize a committed group to keep it going. At this point George R. Barrett got involved, and on August 4, 1987, he assembled a number of sailors, including the author of this article, in an organizational meeting at St. Francis Yacht Club. With the support of some leading participants from prior races and the Ballena Bay Yacht Club, he drafted the Articles of Incorporation for a new club. The Pacific Cup Yacht Club, whose function would be to take over the organization of the race, was born.

One of the first items of business was the choice of a new finishing line. Talks with Kaneohe Yacht Club, one of the three principal clubs on Oahu that had handled the finish of the Transpac race from Los Angeles, led to the important and happy choice of Kaneohe as the new finishing line.

Barrett had sailed the race as the chartering skipper of Charley, a Holland 67, which won third place in 1986. Although he looked forward eagerly to doing the 1988 race, his health began to deteriorate, and when the boat he wanted to charter was committed to another race, he ran the race from the shore.

He ran it well. It was George that made the 1988 race the first Pacific Cup with a major sponsor, West Marine, the first to be governed by a yacht club set up solely for the purpose of running this race, and the first to have Kaneohe Bay as a destination.

George died in the fall of 1988, but the Pacific Cup continues as a living memorial to him.

In 1988 winds were lighter than usual at 15 to 22 knots and the seas were smooth. The winner on corrected time was Saraband, a Westsail 32 that had sailed a consistent pace for 14 days, 17 hours elapsed time, an amazing feat in relatively light winds. Second and third places went to the veteran boats Wild Goose and Magic Carpet, while Kathmandu took first in IOR after her competition got caught too far north and suffered from light winds.

Hitting our Stride The 1990 race had generally nice conditions except for light wind the first few days. We had a number of firsts, such as staggered starts over a four-day period and a record number of entries that peaked at 53, with 45 actually crossing the starting line. The idea of using staggered starts was to have most of the fleet sailing in the same weather conditions and for all entrants to finish within a few days of each other. Hopefully this would result in a fairer, closer, and more fun race. All in all, the new format was a great success. Most entrants finished within three days of each other and the first five boats overall represented all four crewed classes. In fact, the first three boats overall represented a complete range of sailboat types with first being an ultralight, second a medium displacement racer-cruiser, and third a heavy displacement cruiser. The first three boats overall in order of finish were Oaxaca (Santa Cruz 50), Heart of Gold (Schumacher 50) and Saraband (Westsail 32).

The 1992 race continued to grow: 46 boats starting and 43 finishing. The first start was windy and the next starts were

very slow. Overall, the race was relatively fast. It proved to be a rhumb line race because the high was quite far north. Some boats successfully chose a great circle route. The two largest boats in the race (ultralight 70’s) were doublehanded. The smallest boat in the fleet, Team Bonzi, a Moore 24, did a sweep, taking both the doublehanded and the Pacific Cup trophy. Fleet second place went to Ghost, a Morgan 38 owned by the author and now home-ported in Kaneohe.

The 1994 race saw records fall. First, an all-time high of 58 boats participated. Second, 52 finished, and third, Steve Rander’s Rage broke Merlin’s long standing elapsed time record of 8 days, 11 hours and 1 minute by finishing it in 8 days, 7 hours and 13 minutes. Probably another first was a proposal of marriage during one morning’s roll call. The small boats dominated the corrected time standings, with Bill and Melinda Erkelen’s home-built Dogpatch 26, Moonshine, winning overall, Division B and the Double-handed class. Chimera, an Express 27, took second and the Olson 25, Siva, took third in the fleet.

The starting conditions for the 1996 Pacific Cup were a repeat of 1992. The first day saw the boats blasting away from the coast, while the next three divisions were wondering if they would ever make it past the Farallones. Conditions were right for Rage, which broke her own record of 8 days, 7 hours set in 1994 with a new record of 7 days 22 hours. Not only did the speed record fall, a record 60 boats made it to Kaneohe. Among them was Illusion, a tried-and-true California-to-Hawaii veteran Cal 40, sailed by Stan Honey and Sally Lindsay, who captured the overall corrected time honors and led a double-handed sweep of the fleet. The Moore 24 Kangaroo Court took second overall, followed by the Custom 27 Wildflower.

In 1998 the speed record was demolished

by Roy Disney’s boat Pyewacket as she took more than a full day off the record, finishing in 6 days, 14 hours, and 23 minutes. Pacific Cup veteran Bob Nance won first overall on handicap in Water Pik, a Newport 30.

The 2000 race was slow – so slow that several boats floated around the Farallones for three days in the early part of the race and 27 of the 80 boats entered did not finish within the time limit. The winner was Octavia, a Santa Cruz 50, with a remarkable elapsed time of 10 days, 12 ½ hours.

In 2002 the race was in more normal weather, with almost all the boats finishing within a few days of each other. Skip Allan on Wildflower, proving that experience (over 25 ocean passages) does count, not only won the double-handed division but also came in first overall.

In 2004 the start was more nerve-wracking.

The day before the first start, the weather service issued gale warnings for the area of the Farallones, which proved overly pessimistic. The race was

marked by uneventful weather after that, with the high filling in after the first two days and making it a slow race. The overall winner was Winnetou, Division A was won by Ghost, the author’s Morgan 38 (18 years after her first Pacific Cup race) and Eyrie won double-handed with an elapsed time of 14 days and 4 hours. A new elapsed time record was set by Mari Cha of 5 days, 5 hours and 38 minutes.

In 2006 the race was slow again. The position of the high, and to where it was moving, made it a guessing game. Most boats tried a course close to the rhumb line, but after the first few days changed their minds and tried to go south. It took 9 to 12 days for most of the boats to finish and after 15 days there were still 9 boats that had not finished. First place went to Lightning, with an elapsed time of 9 days, 3 hours, 5 minutes.

ET, with a resident naval architect on board, was second. In a tribute to the handicappers, four of the five crewed divisions had a boat in the top ten finishers. California Girl won the prize for being the boat which sailed the one millionth mile of Pacific Cup racing. continued on page 12

Trophies & Fun Prizes Sailors of all skill levels, sailing boats large and small, participate in this major ocean race. Each sailor, whether they win a major trophy or not, is a winner. The Latitude 38 Performance Trophy Explained

T

he Latitude 38 performance trophy is awarded to the yacht with the most convincing win relative to its own division.

One of the problems with multiple starts on different days is that different divisions often encounter significantly different weather conditions in the early part of the race. When this happens, some divisions have an inherent advantage over other divisions, and the overall winner is often determined by luck-of-the-draw with respect to offshore weather on their start date.

An element of randomness is not necessarily a bad thing in sailboat racing, but there has always been interest in comparing the winners of different divisions by looking at their performance against only the boats in their own division, thereby leveling out this source of error.

Another factor is the relative level of competition in each division.

Some divisions are populated with relatively similar boats sailed by more competitive crews, and a large winning margin in these divisions is difficult. On the other hand, some divisions have more variability in both the type of boat and the degree of racing intensity, and winning margins in these divisions tend to be large.

The Latitude 38 Performance Award is an attempt to compare the winners of different divisions on more equitable terms by evaluating the degree of competitiveness in each division so that winning margins in each division can be realistically compared.

The central assumption here is that a more competitive division will have more closely clustered corrected time finishes than a less competitive division.

Standard deviation has been used in past races to evaluate the competitiveness or “tightness” of the division finishers. However standard deviation is strongly affected by outliers, and a straggler in an otherwise competitive division might skew the calculated standard deviation. For this reason the previous method arbitrarily rejected the bottom 20% of each division in calculating the results.

For 2012, the standard deviation method is replaced by the “median absolute deviation” (MAD) method. (With thanks to the crew of Moonshine, 2010 Performance Award runner-up, for pointing out the advantages of this method.)

From Wikipedia: “The median absolute deviation is a measure of statistical dispersion. It is a more robust estimator of scale than the sample variance or standard deviation... For instance, the MAD is a robust statistic, being more resilient to outliers in a data set than the standard deviation. In the standard deviation, the distances from the mean are squared, so on average, large deviations are weighted more heavily, and thus outliers can heavily influence it. In the MAD, the magnitude of the distances of a small number of outliers is irrelevant.”

In other words, trailing outliers (stragglers) do not skew the results as they do with the standard deviation method.

Here’s how the MAD-based Performance Index is calculated: 1) Find the median of the corrected times in the division. It is not necessary to filter out any of the trailing outliers.

2) Calculate the deviation of each corrected time from the median.

Convert negative deviations to positive (i.e., take the absolute value of each deviation).

3) Find the median of all the deviations. This is the median absolute deviation. In indicial notation: Median Absolute Deviation = mediani (|Xi - medianj(Xj)|) 4) Now look at how far the division winner was ahead of the median, and divide this by the MAD. The result is the performance index for that boat.

The boat with the highest performance index wins the Latitude 38 Performance Trophy. (Which, incidentally, is still inscribed with the formula for standard deviation because it is a much more attractive formula when written out, and still includes a slide rule, even though a slide rule is essentially useless for calculating either standard deviation or median absolute deviation.)

The 2008 race saw a return to near-capacity entry lists, with almost 70 entries. Every monohull that entered started and every boat that started finished. Philippe Kahn’s Pegasus set a new doublehanded record of just over 7 days, 15 hours. Double-handed Division One held the most drama, with Joby Easton and Bill Huseby on Rain Drop winning first overall, the Pacific Cup, the Navigator’s Award, and the Latitude 38 Trophy. Ed and Earlinda Polkenhorn, aboard Neptune’s Daughter, traveled rather slowly, but were greeted at the docks by the entire fleet who took out time from the awards party to sing “Happy Birthday” to Earlinda. Second overall was Sleeping Dragon, a Hobie 33, and third was Sapphire. We introduced several new trophies in 2008, including “Fastest Family Afloat” won by the Rasmussens of Sapphire, and the yacht club Team Trophy, won by Encinal Yacht Club.

In 2010 there were 12 boats in double-handed divisions with Tule Fog the first to finish, while three boats took a DNF. In the full crewed fleet Horizon, in division D, took first place with a time of 8 days, 11 hours and 46 minutes, and also won the Pacific Cup, the Navigator’s Award, and the Latitude 38 Trophy. Five boats in division E, including the fleet second place Criminal Mischief, had faster elapsed times but could not correct out over Horizon.

It’s still too early to guess the weather for 2012, but a look at the list of entries makes it clear that from smaller-than-ever 21-footers, to heavy cruisers, to sleds, this will be another great race with something for every entrant. Boat Lei

O

ld-time island hospitality has it that when you arrive in Hawai‘i you’re greeted with a lei and a kiss. The Kaneohe Yacht Club has extended this gracious tradition every two years to the boats arriving in the Pacific Cup race. No sooner than three days before the first ETA, a volunteer crew of Native Hawaiians and club members heads out into their lo‘i (gardens) or even into their moku (forest or land divisions) of Ko‘olauloa and Ko‘olaupoko to gather fresh foliage to make lei. Ahhh, the smell of the ‘aina (land) is so very welcoming.

Oh, but wait, these lei are for the boats! (Don’t worry, the captain and mates will get theirs, too.) Made to order, each garland measures 12 feet long, and no two are alike.

They’re similar to the lei that greet outrigger canoes when they finish a regatta and the ones horses wear in the Kamehameha Day Parade. Think big.

If you’re one of the early birds to make it ashore, you can head over to the KYC longhouse with your libation to watch these wonders being created by hand. Each lei artist, like a professional florist, selects a color palette from the available array of plant bundles to fashion a lei.

Ti leaves, for protection, grow in hues of green and red. Laua‘e ferns, so sweet.

Croton leaves, even more color. Variegated Song of India. Ginger. Heliconia. Sometimes a Bird of Paradise. The lei maker places the material just so, one by one, and secures them in the Hawaiian wili style, just as you might whip the end of a line.

After an average of two hours, each of about 50 lei is tagged with the yacht’s name and whisked into a cold room to keep it fresh and where it awaits the news that its boat has crossed the finish line, often by the cheering from shore.

“We enjoy crafting the boat lei for the Pacific Cup. It’s an intense, congenial work party for a few days. Plus it benefits our Hawaiian civic club by providing scholarship funds,” says Rebekah Luke, known as The Boat Lei Lady.

“When the sun sets behind the Ko‘olau Mountains and evening turns to night, the lei makers go home, and the boat lei are delivered by KYC’s cheerful greeters, the Leis and Trays Committee, who provide the kiss.”

Girls Just Want To Have Fun Racing to Hawaii from a Woman’s Perspective By: Sylvia Seaberg and Synthia Petroka “What do you do at night?”

“O

h we usually drop the anchor, do our nails, wash our cashmere sweaters and then go to bed.”

It’s the cashmere that gets them, otherwise they might, just maybe, believe this load of bull. Everybody who does the race gets this question, not just us. At night we do what practically every other boat does…the same things that we do during the day, apart from maybe a shortened watch schedule and trading sunglasses for headlamps.

We raced the Pacific Cup in 2004 in the doublehanded division aboard Eyrie, a Wylie designed Hawkfarm 28. Our names are Sylvia and Synthia, but you can call us Dollz - Dollz with Ballz.

This was not our first Hawaii endeavor; we had both done the race before in 1998, on different, fully crewed boats, each the lone woman among a crew of men.

What made us decide to do it again, this time just two women on a small boat? The Pacific Cup was advertised as “The Fun Race to Hawaii”, and we were basically a couple of chicks looking for a fun time - as advertised. We had been inspired by the many females who had done the race before us; some big names, some regular folk like us, even a blind woman skipper! We also had a stout, seaworthy (albeit slow) boat that we knew well and trusted. So the approachability of the race, that it is for everyone, not just rock stars, and our comfort with our own little boat, pushed us out of the realm of sanity and into the crazy world of preparing for a long ocean race.

It was important to us to start the race in 2004 with as much experience on the boat as possible so we practiced and competed in double-handed ocean racing for at least a year beforehand. After a couple of ocean races we were surprised to realize we weren’t doing too badly. In fact we were beating the men! Maybe it was because we knew the boat so well; having raced fully crewed for a number of years. Maybe it was because we had modified some things on the boat to make her more manageable with our feminine brute force. Maybe it was because we had crewed on the Cal 40 Illusion and learned that a race actually starts at least 24 hours before the starting gun and continues long after crossing the finish line. A big part of racing is the ability to compete with your mind, not just your body, so in sailing it’s possible for women to compete against men on a fairly equal basis.

Preparation We learned that good preparation is the best weapon in a sailor’s arsenal, and women and men can have an equal aptitude for this.

Before setting off we determined what our goal would be. Did we want to make it a cruise to paradise or did we want to compete? Based on our success in the OYRA series (we won) we couldn’t deny our destiny and decided our goal would be world domination. Knowing this helped us navigate through the many options and obstacles in preparing a boat to pass inspection and be ready to sail over 2,000 miles of open ocean. With every decision and choice that we made we asked ourselves, would this help us win? Knowing this also meant we knew we would push the boat and ourselves hard, so we wanted to prepare ourselves for­­any potential gear failure and continue racing hard.

We became absolutely shameless in asking friends for help in our campaign. We borrowed a SSB radio and antenna from Brian Boschma (prior Pacific Cup Communications boat) and he helped us install the radio and trained us on its use. We also borrowed Brian’s emergency rudder and solar panels. Dan Newland designed and built our new rudder. Skip Allen gave us hours of his time and pages of advice on how to set the boat up and do the race. Tom Condy and Rich Hudnut (land crew for Team Dollz With Ballz) spent as many hours helping us get Eyrie ready as we did.

We spent days finding all the little leaks and repairing them so we would have a dry boat. Rich re-wired the boat to help insure we would not have electrical problems.

Tom, Eyrie’s owner, helped us replace engine parts and trained us on how to service it. He also tutored us on general boat maintenance and how to handle potential problems that might arise. We hauled the boat and fared and sanded her bottom. Our rigger Scott Easom pulled the rig, replaced the old lifelines and standing rigging, and inspected everything “as if his own sisters were racing to Hawaii.” Weeks before the race Sally Honey taught us how to download and review GRIB files so we could get a feel for the interpreting the weather patterns.

Even though we had a lot of help and paid some professionals for their expertise, we were present at nearly every step so that we would know everything about the boat, not just get a briefing, a slap on the rear and a “good luck”. We spent many hours going over safety procedures including crew overboard, deploying the emergency rudder, getting the life raft into the cockpit, climbing the mast, etc.

The night before our start we met with Sally and Stan Honey for a glass of rum to calm our nerves and for a weather briefing. The news was good. This year following the rhumb line looked like the best route, at least for the first few days. Eyrie would be happy.

The next morning we were as well prepared as we possibly could be. In fact, we were both relieved that the start meant no more preparations. As we sailed out the Golden Gate we laughed that the hardest part was over.

We did have some minor gear failures during the race, but nothing that couldn’t be fixed with the tools and spares we brought along. Probably the most useful things we had on our boat (and we’re not just saying this because we’re women) were snatch blocks. We used them to repair busted spinnaker blocks, smashed outgrabber, and failed spinnaker pole harness.

During the race we continually observed the weather fluctuations throughout the day. Before nightfall we would prepare for squalls by reefing the mainsail and getting the 1.5 oz. kite ready to hoist if needed to do a spinnaker change. As we approached Hawaii and the sea state increased in the blackness of night, we shortened our watch schedule as fatigue adversely affected our driving, which in turn affected the “sleep” for the off-watch.

Observation

Another great weapon in a sailor’s arsenal is persistent observation.

Once again, women and men are equally good, or bad, at this. Racing in the OYRA series taught us the skills to change gears as conditions change and to anticipate the changes before natural forces became too powerful for our physical capabilities. Men will often rely on physical strength to help them solve problems. As delicate damsels we didn’t have that luxury so finesse before brute force became our mantra.

“There’s a lot to be said for looking around,” was some great advice we got from Jim and Sue Corenman.

Respect

Respect was another important weapon in our arsenal. Obviously a sailor must have respect for the sea, but we also need to have respect for ourselves and other crewmembers. In 2004 we shared all the responsibilities on the boat and didn’t expect the other person to do anything we would not or could not do. Blaming was not allowed. If one of us did a good thing then WE had a success. If one of us did a stupid thing then we would decide the next step and move forward. That said, when dealing with a difficult situation we would go into “crisis mode”, and we would revert to the roles that we were each best at. No egos allowed; it was all about the boat and not the individual. We never got bitchy with each other except for maybe thirty seconds at the end when we couldn’t find the darn finish line. We arrived at the dock in Kaneohe liking each other even more than when we started.

In 2010 we did the race together again, this time aboard a much “cruisier” boat, Cinnabar, a well-outfitted and fully crewed Schumacher 52. However we still utilized all that we had learned from double-handing the Hawkfarm in 2004. Good preparation was critical and we were still persistently observant (even though we had fancy weather tools this time). With a crew of seven, we had to be even more observant of our crewmembers. We found it was easier to overlook potential problems than when there were just the two of us aboard. Again, it was all about the boat and not the individual, so every one of us was able to set egos aside and approach problems with compassion rather than blame.

Admittedly, we did sometimes rely on the guys for their brute strength given the size of the boat. There were a couple of nights when steering the boat with its gigantic spinnaker was a bit much for us, so we gave up the helm and took the role of calling wind angle instead of driving. We weren’t being wimps; we were just honest about our limitations so the crew could adjust accordingly.

Did we achieve world domination in 2004? Well…we didn’t win the big punchbowl, but we did win our division, and we found out we were the first allfemale double-handed team to do the Pacific Cup, so we were very excited about finishing the race. Doing well was a bonus.

Upon review, we realize this is not really about a uniquely female perspective. Any boat can benefit if all crew members are well prepared, persistently observant of conditions and fellow crew members, and respectful of the sea, the boat, themselves and each other. Things we did to help make Eyrie more girlfriendly: • Replaced primary winches with

self-tailing winches.

• Changed the purchase on the mainsheet to make it easier to trim.

• Added a fine tune to the mainsheet.

• Added a foot-stop in the cockpit because our legs were too short to reach the other side, even with spike heels.

• Got a longer tiller extension to compensate for our shorter arms.

• Added cleats to the mast to help short-handing.

•

Original rudder had to be replaced, so we replaced it with a longer rudder, which ended up helping with downwind steering.

• Got hers and hers buckets.

Making the most of your Pacific Cup experience Cruise the Hawaiian Islands

Kaneohe Bay, home to Pacific Cup host, Kaneohe Yacht Club, is one of the few fully protected bodies of water in Hawaii. Great anchorages in the seven-mile-long bay include the famous “Sandbar”, Hakipu’u at the westernmost end of the bay, and the leeward side of Coconut Island where you can find shelter from strong trade winds. Other protected summer anchorages on Oahu include Pokai Bay, on Oahu’s western shore and Waimea Bay on the North Shore. You’ve probably seen videos of surfers riding 30-foot waves in Waimea Bay during the winter, however that same bay provides a calm, safe and beautiful cruising anchorage during summer months.

As Kauai lies in the general direction of the sailing route back to the Mainland, many Transpac and Pacific Cup boats stop for a visit on the way home. Hanalei Bay is a spectacular summer anchorage on Kauai’s north shore, and four miles to the west is Haena, a fully protected and easily entered keyhole in the reef.

On the reef outside Haena is “Tunnels”, one of Kauai’s premier surf spots, and directly shoreward from the anchorage is Haena Beach Park and the Haena Dry Cave.

Haena is the last anchorage before you reach the Na Pali coast - nine miles of some of the most spectacular and photogenic coastline you’ll ever see. While sailing along that coast you will often see hikers on the Kalalau Trail 1,000 feet above you. Those hikers can take three days to reach Kalalau Valley, while the sail down the coast takes just a couple of hours. At the western end of the Na Pali coast is Nualolo, a protected anchorage in the lee of a reef where you’ll find the best snorkeling in the state. Directly ashore lies Nualolo State Park, an abandoned ancient Hawaiian village that can only be reached by boat. The remoteness of this park has kept the ruins intact, and it looks as if the ancient Hawaiians only recently departed.

our sailing adventure doesn’t have to end after finishing the Pacific Cup and arriving at the Kaneohe Yacht Club. You’ll be making landfall in one of the most rewarding cruising grounds in the Pacific, and after sailing 2,500 miles to get here, it would be a shame not to take advantage of all that it offers.

North swells and variable winds plague Hawaii’s waters during the fall, winter and spring, which then limits cruising sailors to a few protected all-weather anchorages. But from May through August, the north swell disappears and the trade winds blow reliably, which opens up many great anchorages throughout the island chain.

Still, Hawaii is a challenging place to sail at any time of the year.

The trade winds can be strong, particularly during the summer months when the North Pacific High is deep and stable. These strong trade winds and the seas they build are amplified as they funnel through the narrow channels between the islands and make channel crossings, particularly those in the easterly or upwind direction, bumpy and wet. Protected small boat harbors are scarce and often dilapidated, and there’s little room available for visitors. That’s the down side. The up side is having some spectacular and unspoiled anchorages all to yourself.

The forbidden island of Niihau is a short day sail to the northwest, and there are many protected anchorages on the island’s west coast. Niihau is a privately owned island, but like all of the Hawaiian Islands, the offshore waters and beaches up to the vegetation line are considered public property and are accessible to all. Because Niihau is seldom visited, the island is great for beachcombing. The author once collected 60 Japanese glass balls (fishing floats) on the beach there in a little over an hour. Endangered Hawaiian monk seals are also frequent visitors to Niihau and it is not unusual to see them basking on the beach or stopping by your boat to check you out.

Where to go from Niihau? You could depart for the Mainland or slog back to windward to Kauai or Oahu. Another option is the 300-mile close reach to the Big Island of Hawaii. It takes a couple of days to get there, but is far easier than beating back to Oahu because sheets are eased and you are far enough to leeward of the islands to avoid the strong winds and heavy seas found in the channels between the islands. Once you reach the Big Island, it is downhill all the way back to Oahu!

The Big Island’s 14,000-foot Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes shelter the 40-mile-long Kona Coast from the trade winds. Thermal conditions are the norm on this coast, with gentle sea breezes during the day and land breezes at night, making for truly tranquil cruising. Okoe Bay at the remote southern end of the coast is a favorite anchorage. It is common to awake there in the morning to find the boat surrounded by schools of spinner dolphins that have rested for the night in the bay. Snorkeling is outstanding and hiking ashore along the old

“Kings Highway” and through the ruins of ancient Hawaiian villages is exhilarating. You can still clearly see the debris that accumulated at the high water mark 20 feet above sea level during the 2011 tsunami. Great anchorages to the north of Okoe Bay include Honomalino, Kealakekua Bay (where Captain Cook was killed by the Hawaiians), Kiholo, and Nishimura Bay. Crossing the 40-mile-wide Alinuihaha Channel in the westerly direction is an easy broad reaching day sail. There are good anchorages at La Perouse Bay at the south end of Maui or at Honolua Bay at the north end of the island. The old whaling port of Lahaina is a must stop. If you’re lucky, the harbormaster might be able to find a temporary berth for you in the Lahaina Small Boat Harbor, or if they are available, you could pick up one of the mooring balls outside of the harbor that Lahaina Yacht Club maintains for visiting yachts. As a last resort you can anchor in the Lahaina roadstead. It is a bit rolly, but the West Maui Mountains block the trade winds so conditions are usually benign.

Molokai’s north shore has 3000-foot sea cliffs - the highest in the world - and this coastline was featured as the last bit of dry land in Kevin Costner’s movie, “Waterworld”. Nestled in among the valleys along these cliffs are two great anchorages, Keawanui and Waikolu.

Adjacent to the Keawanui anchorage are sea caves to explore by dinghy and a 100-foot waterfall that empties onto the beach. And keep in mind that the north shore of Molokai is a mere 50 miles away from Kaneohe Yacht Club. But, it’s almost dead to windward from Oahu - not a pleasant trip in heavy trades - but it’s a reasonable sail if the winds back off or shift from their normal easterly direction.

So when you are planning your post-Pacific Cup itinerary in Hawaii you might want to consider an additional Hawaiian Islands cruise as it could be the highlight of your trip. There are some cruising guides available that provide more detailed information to assist you. The Mehaffy cruising guide is a good one, and is available from West Marine or online bookstores.
