LA FORTALEZA
B
In a high crime Rate area safety becomes the most important aspect while choosing a place to live. Based on National Guidelines for Crime Prevention through Environmental Design, la fortaleza provides a shelter sensation without being massive and avoiding traditional security protocols. A mixture of programatic organization makes the building busy all the time which gives a public surveillance. Easy floor plan organization, without entrapment areas, reduces crime possibilities within the building. An three dimensional interaction througout the ap apartments and the different levels creates a “see and be seing condition that preserves resident security by public surveillance as well. The building is divided in two halves, the lower half a public and commercial space, while the upper half is residential only. Residents have unlimited access to the building compare to visitors that are limited to the lower half of the building, a condition provides safety. The skin is designed in order to provide privacy where needed.

Based on the concept movement and interaction, this building was designed to encourage local people to mantain a healthy life through exercise. The facade provides visual interaction with the public outside while at the same time gives the users the privacy needed. The building counts with: retailing space, climbing, pools, skate park, gym, dance rooms, spinning rooms, juice bar, exterior and interior exercise areas, virtual exercise, and its main ceremonial circulation core represanting movement and interaction by its form. The core encourage to get involve with all the activities happening in the building by visual interaction. A elevator core plus a ceremonial stair connects all the levels and at the same time gives a taste of all the different sports by gaps located strategically in the structure. This circulation core has an ondulated in a three dimensional view which makes believe is motion all the time.

COMMON GROUND
UNM proposed three different sites to place a taproom. Our site is located in the Student Union Building where the convenience store, el mercado, is located. one of the most important aspects of this site is its connection to Smith Plaza, that is going to be rebuild, which the team believed would be a perfect opportunity to connect this new program(taproom) to a new and redesign feature at UNM to increase revenue and universitys’ spirit. The name chosen for the taproom is common ground since the objective of this place is to join professors and students together in an area. our concept is based on transition and experience. the perimeter of our site will be identified by perforated metal following a transitional pattern of rectangles chosen by the team. as you enter the pattern starts to show in different materiality and approaches depending the activity. In order to create a transitional experience which is not limited to a visual effect, the team created three different heights of sitting. The height differences were chosen to create a public vs private gradient. The same idea was transmitted to the outside space connecting with smith plaza, but with a new inclusion on the perforated metal enclosing the perimeter. the transitional canopy can be re-arrange for the convenience of the user. It includes the same rectangular pattern used through all the design.

STUDIO EM DESIGN
STUDIO EM DESIGN IS A LOCAL FIRM IN ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO. IT IS OWNED BY THE ARCHITECT EFTHIMIOS MANIATIS, WHO IS ALSO A PROFESSOR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO. THE FIRM IS DEDICATED TO COMMERCIAL DESIGN AND MOSTLY TO RESIDENTIAL. I STARTED AS AN INTERN ARCHITECT IN 2015 WORKING IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF PROJECTS LIKE RENNOVATION OF WINROCK MALL AND ITS FACADES;RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS LIKE A BARN HOUSE AND 4000 SQUARE FEET RESIDENCE FOR A LOCAL FAMILY. MY MAIN TASKS AT THE FIRM WERE WORKING IN ARCHITECTU ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS AND CONSTRUCTION DETAILS, RENDERS, AS WELL AS BUILDING 3D MODELS OF THE PROJECTS. THE FIRM MAINLY USED AUTOCAD, RHINOCEROS AND PHOTOSHOP; AND INCORPORATED REVIT FOR THE LAST SEMESTER OF MY PERIOD OF TIME WORKING FOR THEM. PERIOD OF TIME WORKING FOR THE FIRM: MAY 2015-MAY2017

CONCEPT MODELS Rio Chama Visitor Center
Students had to individually investigate and analyze compelling natural systems and structures to understand how they could inform architectural assemblage. For this portion of the project students had to look to natural systems with similarly-sized repetitive elements and avoid f fractal or systems dependent on scalar shifts.

The main objective for this project was to find unique structures, systems, and formal strategies that have significant structural, material, and environmental performance implications for architecture. For my Biological precedent I chose the Desert Spiny Lizard Scales. I focused in the repetitive pattern and its ergonomics that gives the lizard its shape; how this system looks hard and stiff, but has an incredible dynamism which let the lizard interact with many different landscape sur surfaces and survive from predators.
The module to the left was the result of several iterations testing some ideas and patterns. Based on some qualities of the Desert Spiny Lizard, plus the idea of a repettive pattern using the module with different size increments more study iterations were created to explore more spatial and architectural compositions.

CONCEPT DIAGRAMS Rio Chama Visitor Center
SOUND QUALITY DIAGRAM During a site visit to the rio chama, I noticed that the site for our project was isolated and silent compared to the surrounding areas. After this analysis, my objective was to activate the site but not only by putting a building in the site but also to activate the terrain and interact with acti different surfaces of the site. Similar to a lizard nature on how they can climb, go underground for shelter and interact with its environment, is the way I planned to activate the site. After two different study and design processes between stu two models one of them was chosen for its better spatial qualities that solved some technical and programmatic issues that the first module had.

SITE PLAN
THIS PROJECT IS A PROPOSAL FOR A VISITOR CENTER FOR THE CARSON NATIONAL FOREST ON THE RIO CHAMA. PROPOSALS ARE TO RESPOND TO THE UNIQUE NATURAL LANDSCAPE BY CREATING A SYMPATHETIC ARCHITECTURE,ONE THAT IS MORE GROWN OF THE SITE AND PART OF THE ECOLOGY,THAN WITH OTHER ARCHITECTURAL EFFECTS.THE PROJECTS SHOULD MIMIC NATURAL BIOLOGICAL AND GEOLOGICAL FORMS, CREATING A UNIQUE FORMAL COMPOSITION THAT MERGES WITH THE SITE TOPOLOGY. INSPIRED BY THE ADAPTABILTY TO THE LANDSCAPE OF THE DESERT SPINY LIZARD, TWO DIFFERENT MODULES WERE CREATED AND CONECTED BY THE DIFFERENT CONDITIONS THAT THE SITE DEMANDED IN ORDER TO ACTIVATE IT IN EVERY EVE POSSIBLE WAY. THE SIZE AND THE FORM OF THE BUILDING IS SET BY THE LIZARD ERGONOMICS AND ITS SCALES. THE VISITOR CENTER LOCATED IN THE RIO CHAMA WILL INCREASE THE DYNAMISM OF THE SITE. THE SITE WILL BE ACTIVATED NOT ONLY BY SITTING IN THE GROUND, BUT ALSO BY GOING UNDERGROUND, AND ABOVE IT.

MODELS & RENDERS Rio Chama Visitor Center
Students were to study structural, materiality, and form qualities of the building proposed for the visitor Center in Rio Chama. Starting with a 1/4”= 1’-0” Scale model, students were to increase the detail while zooming in into a section of the A second model at building. 1/2”=1’0” scale followed up by a 1”=1’0” scale model were the sequences used after the first model.

WAYFINDING & SITE PLAN maxwell museum
This project is a proposal for a new maxwell museum. The museum has been having issues with wayfinding of the main entrance and advertising the museum to visitors outside UNM campus. The main idea behind this design is to create a gathering space (Maxwell Plaza) to advertise this (M part of UNM campus and to advertise the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology. In order to have success with both targets, unm students and people from outside campus, two strategies were proposed. A carved signage will be placed in the most used pathways of UNM campus to guide people to the museum. To attract people from outside campus an extension of the plaza will be build next to University BLVD. with this vehicular traffic will have a visual interaction with the museum. Maxwell Plaza idea has another purpose behind it which is to place the museum underground to give the museum more exclusivity and privacy. This will help solving the lack of space of the existing museum and highlight the main entrance in the plaza with a single tower showing an obvious entrance and hierarchy.

DIAGRAMS & PROCESS ecoMOD 6 PROPOSAL
This project is a proposal for a new ecoMOD project, ecoMOD 6. ecoMOD 6 is a housing project for CNM for future CNM faculty or students. UNM Architecture school will work in collaboration with CNM to come with a final design and construction that will be done by AUGUST 2019. Summer studio leaded by NIcholas Nuccio focused all the efforts on site analysis, client requirements and design process of ecoMOD 6. The group of students researched ADA requirements, LEED requirements and city codes to fulfill the client expectations of the design by being ADA accessible, LEED PLATINUM certified. The project also seeks to achieve to be the least expensive project in the USA, for this the team focused on sustainable strategies to maximize the energy consumption of the building as well as energy star certified materials. Another strategy used by the group of students was to create a modular design that can be easily build at any facility, in this case CNM workforce facility. This will facilitate the construction and reduce costs as well since students could collaborate easily. UNM facility will also contribute with the Fabrication LAB where furniture and other objects can be created and built by the students. Named project manager of ecoMOD 6 design group, I collaborated managing the team during the design process, taking decisions on the design, organizing the team to achieve the best results; as well as the Revit Model, base renders, video, base floor plans, base elevations and sections, collaborating with energy analysis of the building.
