a Isla de Montserrat es un Territorio Británico de Ultramar dependiente del Reino Unido ubicado en las Pequeñas Antillas, con el mar Caribe al oeste y el océano Atlántico al este. Tiene al norte las islas de Nevis y Antigua, y Guadalupe al sur. Su superficie es de 102 km², y sus costas miden unos 40 km.

La capital de Montserrat es Plymouth, pero esta población tubo que ser abandonada en el año 2005 debido a la erupción del volcán Soufriere y desde entonces hace sus funciones la ciudad de Brades.

El idioma oficial es el inglés que es hablado con un marcado acento irlandés, una herencia dejada por los antiguos colonos irlandeses.

La isla Montserrat fue poblada por indios Arawak y Caribes. La Isla fue descubierta por Cristóbal Colón en 1493 llamándola Santa María de Montserrat. Los primeros colonos británicos llegaron en 1632, procedían de la isla de San Cristóbal (Saint Kitts o Saint Christopher según la potencia colonial que ocupó aquella otra islita) y fueron varias veces expulsados por los franceses.

En 1782, durante la Guerra de la Independencia de los Estados Unidos, Montserrat fue ocupada brevemente por Francia. Volvió al control británico tras el Tratado de Versalles que acabó con el conflicto. De 1871 a 1958 fue administrada como parte de la Colonia federal de la Islas de Sotavento, después se convirtió en una provincia más de la Federación de las Indias Occidentales de corta vida de 1958 a 1962.

En septiembre de 1989, el Huracán Hugo pasó sobre Montserrat con su fuerza máxima, dañando cerca del 90 por ciento de las estructuras de la isla. En julio de 1995, el volcán Soufriere Hills, dormido durante largo tiempo, volvió a la vida y empezó una erupción que enterró la capital de la isla, Plymouth, con más de 12 metros de barro, destruyó su aeropuerto y el muelle y convirtió la mitad sur de la isla en inhabitable, forzando a más de la mitad de la población a salir de la isla debido a la falta de vivienda. Después de un periodo de erupciones regulares a finales de los 90 incluyendo el 25 de junio de 1997 en las que 19 personas perdieron la vida, la actividad volcánica actualmente se ha reducido sobre todo a infrecuentes expulsiones de ceniza en las áreas deshabitadas, aunque la suciedad a veces se extiende a las áreas pobladas del norte. http://www.ecured.cu/index.php/Islas_Montserrat CARIBEDIGITAL

La población de Montserrat consiguió pleno derecho a residir en el Reino Unido en 1998 y la ciudadanía en 2002.

Erupción del Volcán Soufriere Hills el 30 de septiembre de 1998 Montserrat es una isla volcánica que se encuentra en el borde de las placas del Caribe y sudamericana. Su último período de erupciones, que llegaron a ser catastróficas, fue entre 1995 y 1997, y modificó drásticamente la geografía de la isla. El volcán tiene tres ejes de conos, en el norte Silver Hills y Centre Hills, y en el sur Sofriere Hills, donde se encuentra el punto más alto de la isla: pico Chances (915 m).

Clima El clima de las islas es tropical húmedo con una media de unos 26 ºC con pequeñas variaciones debidas a la altitud. Se trata del clima monzónico y de los vientos alisios en el litoral, que en este caso, y a pesar de su relieve abrupta no se potencia mucho el efecto monzónico, por lo que las precipitaciones no superan los 1.500 mm., con brisas constantes desde el mar y la montaña. La cantidad de lluvia anual es de 1 o 2 metros aproximadamente, bien distribuidas a lo largo de todo el año, con una época más húmeda de julio hasta noviembre, época está en que se ve afectada por los huracanes que se generan en el Atlántico Playas en Montserrat Las playas en Montserrat están en tierras caribeñas y son tan hermosas que atraen al turismo, con su famoso volcán Soufriere, la arena suave y grisáceas le dan una particularidad a la isla de Montserrat. La única playa de arena blanca es la de Rendezvouz Bay hacia el norte, se encuentra un poco distante pero vale la pena visitarla.

Las playas más importantes de Montserrat son: Little Bay: Es una hermosa playa famosa por su · concurrido puerto y variedad de restaurantes. Es un sitio buscado por los turistas que disfrutar de tomar el sol y practicar la pesca en aguas cristalinas.

Rendezvouz Bay: Es la única playa en Montserrat con · arena blanca, es hermosa, ideal para nadar, bucear y disfrutar del sol. Es visitada por los turistas que disfrutan el ecoturismo.

En la playa se pueden encontrar conchas de coral, y en algunas temporadas entre agosto y septiembre es posible ver a las pequeñas tortugas.

Old Road Beach: Es una playa muy popular en Montserrat donde se puede apreciar los rastros de la última erupción del volcán Soufriere aún activo.

Before its lower half became devastated by cataclysmic eruptions of the Soufrière Hills Volcano in 1995, Montserrat was a carefree little island paradise famous as the birthplace of the late Alphonsus Cassell, creator of the soca hit 'Hot, Hot, Hot', and as the home of Air Montserrat, the famous recording studio founded by Beatles producer Sir George Martin. Sting and Eric Clapton were among the stars who recorded here.

Life changed dramatically on 18 July 1995 when a series of ash falls, pyroclastic flows and mud flows buried the capital, Plymouth, and smaller settlements, farmland and forests. Around 11,000 residents were evacuated and resettled in the north or emigrated to Britain. Today, most tourists come for volcano-related day trips. Driving down the coast, you quickly get a feel for the island's rich tropical life and take in jaw-dropping vistas of the destruction.

The volcano is always a wild card, but by and large, traveling to Montserrat is safe. bstract: This paper aims to: present the historical linguistic background of the Caribbean British Colony of Montserrat, “The Emerald Isle”, before and after the eruption of the Soufriere Volcano on September 18, 1996. It also aims to describe the island's population shifts before and after the volcano's eruption. The relevance of language and culture and the influence of the Irish and British (initial inhabitants of Montserrat) and other regional Creoles will also be discussed in the section on linguistic approaches to Montserrat Creole based on reports and studies conducted on the Montserrat English and its evolution. Then the paper turns to consider the future of Montserrat: reconstruction or disappearance? Will Montserrat be a source of a possible language change, revival or in the worst of the cases, death? A final conclusion will close the paper. ****************************************************************************** Conclusion: Montserrat, a British colony located at 40 kms. of Antigua in the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean, is beginning to be reconstructed. The volcano which erupted on September 16, 1996 and other natural catastrophes such as hurricanes have devastated the island. This small Caribbean island represents a possible source of information regarding language change, shift, revival or in the worst of the cases, language death. Two main linguistic studies are discussed in this paper: The brogue that isn't, by Wells, J.C., (1980) and: If the Irish ran the World – Montserrat 1630-1730, by Harman and Kenson (1997).

An invitation is presented in this paper to gather information regarding English and Creoles spoken in this island. Alphonsus Celestine Edmund Cassell MBE (born 16 November 1954, Montserrat, West Indies) is a soca musician who performs under the stage name Arrow.

One of his most well-known songs is "Hot Hot Hot" (1982) - later covered by David Johansen in his Buster Poindexter alter ego.

Although native to Montserrat (and most famous representative of its music) Arrow attributes his success to his time in Antigua, and time spent with Antiguan bands such as Burning Flames.

Arrow continues to be much in demand in the Caribbean, and most recently performed at the Cricket World Cup 2007 opening ceremonies with Shaggy, Byron Lee and Kevin Lyttle.
