Preface Los Vascos is not only its wines and the beautiful property within the Colchagua Valley; it is the result of years of challenges and rewards. It has been developed by people who believe in the project and make it part of their own way of life. A long period of purchasing land and water was followed by the mapping of the estate, where to plant initially as well as thinking of the long term.

We are always evolving. We moved to drip irrigation, sustainable, low-energy farming and have learnt much from our soils. We cultivate olive trees, breed cattle and sheep, and our bees thrive on the pollen of our native trees. It´s about balance and diversity.

This collection of photographs captures the essence of Los Vascos and how we have evolved over 30 years, it is our testimony. Nevertheless, the team continues caring and developing tirelessly the vineyards always with a dedication to the long-term vision.

We have a fantastic estate, wines and people. This unique Los Vascos style is a blend of traditions and an exchange of knowledge between Chile and France, inspired by the “Spirit of Lafite”.

Prefacio Los Vascos, no es solamente sus vinos y una hermosa propiedad en el Valle de Colchagua, es el resultado de años de desafíos y recompensas. La viña se ha desarrollado con personas que creen en este proyecto y la han hecho parte de su propia forma de vida.

Inicialmente tuvimos un largo período de compra de tierras y agua. Creamos un plan de desarrollo de la propiedad siempre pensando en el largo plazo.

Siempre estamos evolucionando; convertimos nuestro sistema de riego en goteo, nos orientamos hacia la sustentabilidad y contamos con una agricultura energéticamente eficiente. Hemos aprendido a conocer nuestros suelos y a usarlos; cultivamos olivos, criamos ovejas y ganado; mientras nuestras abejas recolectan el polen del bosque nativo. Buscamos combinar la diversidad y el equilibrio natural.

Esta colección de fotografías captura la esencia de Los Vascos y el cómo se ha desarrollado en estos treinta años. Este es nuestro testimonio.

Sin embargo, el equipo continúa incansablemente cuidando y desarrollando la viña siempre mirando hacia el futuro.

En Los Vascos, contamos con una hermosa propiedad, vinos y gente. Este estilo único es el producto de una combinación de tradiciones e intercambio cultural y de conocimientos entre Chile y Francia, inspirado en el “Espíritu de Lafite”.

Cuando hace 30 años decidimos explorar la posibilidad de invertir en Chile para desarrollar un proyecto vitivinícola, muchos de mis colegas se mostraron escépticos.

Los vinos chilenos eran prácticamente desconocidos o bien no gozaban de gran reputación, pero por alguna razón yo tenía fe en este país. Pude apreciar que se estaba forjando un cambio político y que ciertamente se trataría de una transición pacífica. Tuve la corazonada de que la tierra y el clima eran propicios para la elaboración de vinos y sentí confianza en que los chilenos, entre los que tengo muchos amigos, serían socios confiables y buenos trabajadores.

Después de tres meses de búsqueda, nos decidimos por Los Vascos. No fue cosa sencilla echar a andar el proyecto y modificar esta hermosa propiedad rodeada de cerros, entre ellos el famoso Cañeten. Tuvimos momentos muy emotivos, como cuando retiramos las cubas de raulí que dan un sabor característico a los vinos, tan popular entre los consumidores chilenos, pero tan distante de las preferencias del mercado internacional. También vivimos momentos en que nos llenamos de entusiasmo al ver que nuestras primeras cosechas no demoraban en cautivar a amantes del vino y periodistas especializados, cuando nuestras ventas superaban las 400.000 cajas y cuando pudimos adquirir el fundo vecino Santa Lucía. Y también sufrimos cuando un terremoto devastó la región y tantos residentes de Colchagua perdieron sus casas y vieron derrumbarse la hermosa iglesia de Peralillo y cuando los incendios forestales rodearon la propiedad y arrasaron con nuestros árboles, pero afortunadamente no con nuestras parras.

Hoy, cuando nuestra propiedad supera las 4.000 hectáreas, incluidas más de 700 hectáreas de viñedos, cuando elaboramos vinos que son reconocidos y apreciados en el mundo entero, cuando el paisaje es hermoso y nuestra bodega está equipada con tecnología de punta y completamente operativa, siento un placer enorme al ver cómo una nueva generación toma las riendas de Los Vascos y comienza a escribir un nuevo capítulo de esta larga historia.

Quiero expresar mi agradecimiento a todos aquellos que trabajan hoy o han trabajado para Los Vascos en algún momento de estos 30 años.

Doy gracias también a la familia Eyzaguirre, a Coco y María Ignacia que estuvieron con nosotros en el inicio de este proyecto, a la familia Claro y en especial a Ricardo, quienes han sido y siguen siendo nuestros fieles asociados, a los miembros de nuestro Directorio y sobre todo a su presidente, Fernando Alvear. ¡Viva Chile, viva Los Vascos y vivan todo los que han participado en esta gran empresa!

When, 30 years ago, we decided to investigate Chili as an investment in Chilean wine, many of my colleagues were very skeptical.

The wines were fairly unknown and their reputation wasn’t very great but for odd reasons I believed in this country. I felt that a political change was in movement and it would certainly be a peaceful evolution. I had a hunch that the land and climate were good for wine making and I had confidence in the Chileans, having quite a few friends there, reliable partners and good workers.

After 3 months of search, we finally opted for Los Vascos. The development of this beautiful property, circled by mountains of which the famous Cañeten, was not always easy. We had emotional moments as for example, when we retired the vats made out of rauli wood which gave a certain taste to the wine, very appreciated by the Chilean public but wasn’t exactly what the International market wanted. We had exciting moments when our first cuvees were quite quickly applauded by wine lovers and journalists, when our sales went over the 400.000 cases, when we were able to acquire the neighboring estate of Santa Lucia. Dramatic moments, when an earthquake ravaged the region and many many inhabitants of Colchagua lost their houses and where the beautiful church of Peralillo fell to the ground, when fires surrounded the property, destroying our trees but sparing the vines.

Today, when this property of over 4.000ha of which more than 700ha of vines, we make wines which are well known and appreciated throughout the world, where the landscape is beautiful and our chais up to date and practical, it is with great pleasure that I see a younger generation taking over Los Vascos and opening a new page of its long history.

Los Vascos es una historia de Francia y Chile. Una historia en que la naturaleza se une a una familia de hombres y mujeres que han trabajado sin cesar estos últimos 30 años para hacer crecer y preservar este paraíso y los vinos que produce.

Hoy tengo el honor de poder unirme a ustedes para seguir trabajando para el futuro. Porque la ventaja de un equipo como el nuestro es que siempre podemos pensar en grande. Entonces, tenemos que seguir investigando e ideando la forma de continuar plantando en laderas para alcanzar nuevos niveles de calidad en nuestros viñedos. No debemos cejar en nuestros esfuerzos por hacer de Le Dix un vino aún más memorable y que nos llene de orgullo cada vez que se abra una de sus botellas, sin importar en qué rincón del mundo. Debemos seguir esforzándonos por llegar cada vez a más consumidores en Chile, en toda América Latina y seguir abriendo mercados año a año. Y debemos seguir mostrándole al mundo lo increíble que es la experiencia de disfrutar un vino chileno.

Todo eso y más podemos lograr si seguimos trabajando con la misma pasión y espíritu de equipo demostrados en los primeros 30 años de esta historia. Gracias a todos por vuestro arduo trabajo. Tengo la certeza de que podemos mirar a los próximos 30 años con entusiasmo y tranquilidad.

Los Vascos is a story of France and Chile. A story where nature met a family of men and women who have worked hard for the past 30 years to develop and preserve this paradise and the wines it produces.

Today, I am honored to have the chance to help develop this with all of you in the future. Because, the good thing is, that with a team like ours, we can always dream bigger. And this is what we have to do: Imagining how we can keep planting the hillsides to reach new levels of quality for our vineyards. Working tirelessly on Le Dix so it can become an even greater wine that we are always proud to serve on our tables all around the world. Growing our consumers locally in Chile, all across Latin America and opening new markets for our wines year after year.

And always, telling the world how incredibly drinkable Chilean wines are.

All these objectives seem easily within our reach, if we keep working with the passion and teamwork that happened here for the first 30 years of this story.

Thank you for all your hard work. I have no doubt that we can look to the next 30 years with excitement and serenity!
