THE P1 SAFETY TEAM? DON CAMPBELL

Vice President Don has been involved in the field of safety for 26 years, but first became interested in a safety career during high school. While visiting the University of Central Missouri for football recruiting, he spoke with an advisor who showed him the benefits of a Safety Management degree. That conversation struck a chord with him and knew he had found an interesting and rewarding career.

Don has been at P1 for 22 years, and during his time here has been instrumental in developing a toptier safety program.

Greg has been with P1 nearly 21 years. He started his career in construction and says he once worked for a construction company that couldn’t even spell safety.

Prior to doing any task, stop and think about the worst-case scenario and think about how to prevent it.

When Don isn’t working, he enjoys spending time with his family. He is married and has three active teenagers, so most of his time is spent coaching, attending sporting events or Uber-ing them around town to help maintain their busy social calendars.

His main objective is to ensure that employees have a safe and healthy work atmosphere, and provide the knowledge and tools necessary for them to complete their job safely.

“The best part about my job is knowing the employees are returning home safely to their loved ones,” Don said.

He said sometimes it’s challenging to get new associates to buy into the P1 safety culture, compared to the way they did things with their previous employer. “When you have a group of people with shared values and goals, the job gets a lot easier,” he added.

Safety Director

“They had us do sketchy tasks, but I had a friend in safety who taught me proper techniques,” Greg said.

After becomining interested in safety, another friend at P1 told Greg P1 was a great place to work, so Greg applied and has been here ever since.

As Safety Director, he manages the safety team, keeps P1 in compliance with OSHA, and helps promote safety throughout the company.

Part of “promoting safety” means talking with all the employees.

“I find satisfaction when I know everyone goes home injury free and I also like to promote being safe at home as well,” Greg said.

Another special aspect of Greg’s job is getting to see all the different job locations and processes where P1 preforms work.

He says that M&M MARS is still one of his all-time favorites.

“The safety culture reflects on everyone, and we have a great safety culture at P1.” Greg said.

“We strive for perfection and a world class safety program, and I believe everyone contributes to this.”

Greg’s Safety Tip: If you See Something, Say

Something! Stop work and remove the hazard.

Fun Fact: Greg has a pet pot belly pig named

William Oscar Meyer Weenie Sweeney (Will for short) that hasn’t been outside in three years. He goes to the bathroom in a litter box, and is a great snuggler!

Greg has watched his kids play sports for several years, but now only one still plays. He has a daughter, 12, and two sons, 18 and 20. Greg loves hunting and fishing and takes pride knowing his kids have acquired the same passion for the outdoors.

CHERI TOTTA

Safety Coordinator Cheri has been with P1 for more than 22 years. She was originally hired as an HR assistant, which included some duties with the safety department. That position eventually evolved into a full-time safety position.

She keeps the safety numbers up to date for both Construction and Service, and helps plan the yearly safety golf tournament, along with other administrative duties.

Cheri enjoys being part of the safety team because every day has a different challenge.

As Safety Coordinator, Cheri wears a lot of hats.

“Every day is different, which makes the job both challenging and rewarding,” she said.

She not only takes care of the workman’s compensation and liability issues, but coordinates all the safety training for Construction, Service, and the BCTS companies.

“It’s great to be part of group that has the same mindset: commitment to the P1 safety culture.”

Cheri’s Safety Tip: Slow down!

Fun Fact: Cheri loves driving around in her side-by-side off-road vehicle.

When Cheri has free time, she spends time with her family. She also enjoys the outdoors, working in the yard, fishing, taking care of the chickens and turkey, or just relaxing and floating around in the pool.

BRY GRAME

Senior Safety Specialist Bry has been in the safety field for eleven years, and at P1 for five years. He first considered safety as a career while attending the University of Central Missouri (UCM).

“A friend of mine was in UCM’s nationally recognized program, and told me he really enjoyed it,” Bry said. “After speaking with the department head, I decided to sign up for the program.”

Bry started out working as a contracted safety professional and worked as P1 Site Safety on three different projects.

“I stayed in contact with Don over the years, and thankfully he reached out to me when a

full-time position with the safety team became available,” Bry said.

Bry says that safety is universal so it can be challenging covering such a wide range of environments and scenarios on job sites.

Bry enjoys doing the job audits because it gives him the chance to see a lot of interesting places in the city.

“It’s awesome seeing the process of projects from start to finish, and I’m always amazed by the completed work of our talented crews,” he said.

“The P1 Safety Culture hasn’t been built just by the safety team, it happens because of the the buy-in from everyone employed with P1, from leadership to field,” Bry added.

Bry’s Safety Tip:

Always put safety first, because accidents can have a lasting effect.

Fun Fact: Bry has never broken a bone in his life. “This is surprising, because anyone who knew me growing would never have guessed I’d end up a safety guy!”

Bry and his better half Courtney have three kids that keep their schedules busy.

The two oldest, Cade & Barrett, are active in sports.

Daughter Charli is the youngest, and Bry says she is definitely the boss!

Kayla’s Safety

Safety & Fleet Coordinator Kayla is relatively new to the safety field, and has been at P1 for almost one year.

Kayla said she was at a point in her life where she needed a change and a more stable career for herself and her daughter.

So she applied to a job opportunity that P1 had posted on Facebook.

“I came into this position with very little knowledge of safety, so I am learning something new every day, which makes the job very fun and rewarding.”

Kayla says she loves being part of an amazing and supportive team that provides training and support for the workers in the field, so they can stay safe and make it home to their families.

“I didn’t have any previous safety/ fleet experience, so I feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity,” Kayla said.

Stephen has been in safety for about two years and at P1 for one year, but has worked around construction safety for nearly 32 years.

He started his career as a Local 2 sheet metal worker, and says he was influenced by his dad, who works in construction safety.

“I really enjoy helping, training, and educating people, so moving into safety was the natural next step for me,” Stephen said.

Stephen says he was familiar with P1 and the variety of trades P1

performs, so after being in safety for a period of time with another company, he jumped on the P1 opening for a Safety Specialist.

As a Safety Specialist, Stephen gets out on the job sites to perform job audits and provide training for employees. He helps ensure that P1, general contractor, local, state, and federal rules are being followed in accordance with P1 policies, jobsite, and OSHA regulations.

Safety Specialist team. They completely embrace the safety culture and understand why we are out there trying to improve their jobsite – and that we’re not just trying to play safety cop,” Stephen said.

Stephen said he also enjoys talking to workers on the jobsite, hearing about the jobs they are working on, and getting to get to know them on a personal level.

Stephen’s Safety Tip: Wear your safety glasses at home when doing home projects, yard

work, or anything where material could get in your eyes.

Fun Fact: Stephen enjoys strategy board games.

When Stephen has free time, he’s working on getting a 1985 Honda Goldwing Aspencade 1200 motorcycle running, but he also enjoys fishing and going to the lake.

Tip: Always be aware of your surroundings.

Fun Fact: Kayla used to choreograph the dancers for the Missouri Mavericks Hockey Team.

Kayla has worn a lot of hats, including licensed cosmetologist/cosmetology instructor and certified Hip Hop Zumba instructor.

“I have a six-year-old daughter named Charlie, so now I get to be a dance mom,” Kayla said. Kayla and Charlie also have a Chiweenie named Dexter.

Alex’s Safety Tip:

ALEX PANNELL

Make smart decisions, because those decisions, whether you know it or not, can affect your livelihood.

Safety Specialist Alex has been with P1 for about two and a half years. He found P1 because his relatives told him about the great safety culture.

He started his career in nursing, but switched to safety and says both fields reflect his passion for helping others.

“While performing my job duties of safety audits and training, I’m also promoting a passion for safety with P1 individuals in the field,” Alex said.

Alex says one of the best parts of

the job is meeting so many people in the field and being involved with variety of projects.

Fun Fact: Alex has a chocolate lab that fetches beer from the fridge for him.

Alex notes that keeping up with all the OSHA 1926 Construction Safety standards can be challenging.

Alex has a passion for hunting, fishing and anything outdoors, but he and his wife currently have two girls under two years old, so that keeps them very busy at home for now.

“It’s critical to know these in order to implement the best practices for field employees,” he said.

“With high safety records year after year, the P1 culture speaks for itself, but we also know there is always room for improvement.”

“My wife and I once raised 15 chocolate lab puppies in our living room, and have since realized that raising children is not the same, since you can’t just put them in kennels.”

Hunter is the newest member of the safety team, joining P1 just a little over one month ago.

He has worked in the safety field for three years and chose safety as his career because he wants to help ensure employees should go home the same way they came to work.

One of the challenges Hunter finds in his job is making sure employees don’t become complacent about safety.

“Complacency leads to taking shortcuts and unsafe behaviors,” Hunter said.

“It is my goal to keep employees safe at work,” Hunter said. “This gives me motivation and passion, and it’s the reason my job is satisfying.”

Hunter added that he enjoys being part of the safety team because he knows there are always opportunities to learn something new.

As a Safety Specialist, Hunter completes job site visits while identifying hazards, and provides training to employees.

“I know that I am a part of something important and look forward to helping expand the safety culture at P1,” Hunter said.

Hunter’s Safety Tip: Always use the right tool for the job and understand how: read the manual!

Fun Fact: Hunter is Safety Specialist Alex Pannell’s younger brother. Hunter is also a newlywed, recently

married in November 2023.

Outside of work, Hunter loves to go fishing and trap shooting. He also has a kitten named Cleo.

A Long and Fruitful History

P1 Provides Single-Source Solutions at Haskell Indian Nations University When you have a campus of buildings full of rich history dating back to 1884, system upgrades are inevitable. Haskell Indian Nations University (HINU) in Lawrence, KS, began as an agriculture education program for grades one through five.

Today, HINU continues to serve the educational needs of American Indian and Alaska Native people from across the United States, and the only government boarding school that has evolved into a four-year university for Native students.

P1 has been part of the Haskell tradition for so many decades even our our contact at Hoss & Brown, who has done extensive work at Haskell most seasoned field employees can’t remember how far back it goes! SEAlaska, the GC awarded most of the work, chose P1 as subcontractor due to P1’s design-build capability and the quality of P1’s work.

“SEAlaska is fairly new to Haskell,” Todd explained. “The projects are bid ‘off-scope,’ meaning there are no prints, and the sub is expected to take projects from design-build through completion.”

Todd says P1 may do the design-build in-house, or partner with

library, dormitories 108 & 109, deferred maintenance in 12 buildings, retrofitting of bathrooms and other buildings and bringing them up to desired ADA compliance, two science labs including all new gas and waste, turning a shop building into a science building with all new ductwork, plumbing , and gas, and new deferred maintenance on the gymnasium.

The project currently underway is a four-building MEP project for HINU, which includes HVAC and electrical overhaul of two dorms, the administration/IT building, and an auditorium.

“P1’s ability to perform MEP construction and fabrication was attractive to SEAlaska, since many of these renovations require all three trades,” Todd said.

The mechanical scope includes two chillers, three boilers, 12 pumps, two condensers and more than 200 fan coil units in all four buildings: Blalock Hall, Pochahontas Hall, Ross Hall and the auditorium.

In the Blalock building, electrical installed the main service, including the MCC (motor control center).

“Since it was a whole new main service, we worked with SEAlaska to coordinate the shut-down and re-start of the entire system,” Jeff said.

Since the mechanical teams had to remove a lot of ceiling to work, Jeff says the electrical team also replaced large portions of lights.

“If mechanical was there, so were we,” Jeff said.

The project involves a four-pipe system, a distribution system that contains both hot water supply with return lines and a chilled water supply with return lines.

The electrical team installed controls, main power, thermostat, and power to VFD (variable frequency drive) pumps and chillers.

In addition to mechanical and electrical, P1 Service has played a major role in the HVAC upgrades, conducting start-up and troubleshooting.

Todd says he doesn’t see the work slowing down for P1 as Haskell continues to make updates to the campus.

“P1 is proud to be part of such a valuable piece of history in Lawrence, KS,” he said. “We look forward to this continued partnership.” 

SEWAGE P1 Service Installs Dual Suction Pump to Increase Plumbing Efficiency at Kansas City Federal Building

When the sewage pump ejection system at the Richard Bowling Federal Building in downtown Kansas City started to fail, P1 Service came to the rescue with a major upgrade.

“This building, with its 18 floors, posed a unique challenge as the pumping system is located in a recessed area of the basement,” Dave explained.

Approximately 16 federal agencies, including the Social Security Administration, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Health and Human Services, occupy the Missouri building.

“However, with our team’s dedication and seamless teamwork, we successfully extracted the old system and assembled the new one, even in that challenging space,” Dave said.

The P1 team assembled for the job to remove the old air pumps, motors, and control panels, clearing the way for a new system to be installed.

The team used large-schedule 40 steel pipes - welded and flanged - to build the system’s discharge piping.

Plumbing Project Manager Dave Rollo notes that the old system was a duplex pneumatic pump system.

The total shutdown was seven days, during which all restrooms were temporarily closed, and steam condensate from the sewer was captured in a temporary vessel.

“These systems can be loud and noisy, prone to leaks, and difficult to maintain,” Dave said. “The new system installed was a major upgrade: a dual suction-style pump.”

“The new dual suction pump system will undoubtedly be easier to maintain,” Dave added.

Dave said P1’s single-source capabilities helped immensely in getting it all done.

The system is specifically designed to handle the increased volume and temperature of incoming water and can effortlessly manage the building’s 40-foot rise.

“Our plumbers, electricians, and pipefitters all worked together to complete the project on time and within budget,” he said.

In addition, the new system is large enough to capture sub-level and ground-level restrooms.

The greatest challenge was the height of the building and the location of the pumping system.

P1 had to work with urgency to complete the job within the timeframe and get the building’s facilities back up and running correctly.

Dave said he’s grateful to the expert team that made this project another successful job completed.

“This wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing expertise and hard work of the P1 Service team.” 
