ADAPTING TO BETTER SERVE

OUR CUSTOMERS INSIDE: CONGRATS TO ALL THE SPRING GRADS!

Project Coordinators Strengthen Bonds and Knowledge

When it comes to customer service, serving our internal customers is just as important as serving the external ones, and there are critical support groups within P1 without whom our associates couldn’t serve their external customers. One of those critical groups is our P1 Project Coordinators (PCs). A PC supports multiple project managers - and possibly other associates - within the organization. PCs may also carry titles other than “project coordinator” but perform many of the same functions. As Topeka Project Coordinator Rebecca Venable points out, that requires some special skills. “The greatest challenge is learning each project manager’s personality and preferences,” Rebecca said. Despite the challenges, St. Joseph Office Manager Misty McConnell explains how critical PC support is to the success of the company. “Being a Project Coordinator can be a difficult yet rewarding job, and it takes the right kind of person to do it and handle all challenges within your team and position,” Misty said. “Our PMs work long days and sometimes weekends to make sure a project stays on track and they meet their deadlines. The PC is their 'go-to'. We help them manage deadlines, workflows, meetings, anything they need to ensure a job or bid goes smoothly.” Senior Lenexa Project Coordinator Laura Adkins adds that communication is critical. “Communication is very important for a successful project management team,” she said. “Sometimes we feel part of the team and other times we feel left out until there’s an emergency.”

Sarah notes that each PC had to create an “All About Me” power point to present to the group, allowing all participants to walk away knowing each other a little bit better.

With a job like that, it’s important for our PCs to understand the company and its capabilities, and connect with and learn from each other. “It’s good to mix the seasoned PCs with the new PCs,” Wichita Project Coordinator Paula Ewy said. “It’s helpful to hear what issues others have encountered, and what steps were taken to remedy them.”

Training Specialist Tennille Tegeler works with Sarah to facilitate the training. “This training really focuses on the whole picture instead of just the PC piece. The thought is that if they understand everything involved in the project process from cradle to grave, they may be able to help with other tasks, understand why we have certain processes/procedures, and get a feel for how important their role is,” Tennille said.

That’s why P1 has offered a “PC Bootcamp” for more than a decade. “We set out to achieve three objectives,” Director of Organizational and Talent Development Sarah Garcia explained.

“Being a Project Coordinator can be a difficult yet rewarding job and it takes the right kind of person to do it and handle all challenges within your team and position.” -Misty McConnell, St. Joseph Office Manager

“P1 is an amazing organization. Most PCs are just familiar with the group(s) they support and don’t realize all that P1 offers our customers," Sarah said.

The PCs seem to agree that getting together to trade information, best practices, and work through challenges is probably the most valuable part of Bootcamp, both from a professional and personal standpoint.

“We teach PCs more about our industry and the specific work we perform, including MEP systems and their importance in a building," Sarah said. “We also wanted to do some team-building to strengthen the PCs’ relationships with one another," Sarah said.

Las Vegas Project Coordinator Cristine Douglas said she came away with more understanding of the “why” behind P1 practices and processes. “The whole Bootcamp was beneficial,” Cristine said. “I enjoyed meeting people from different departments, putting faces to names, and understanding why we do things the way we do. It was great to see how other locations do things.” “Spending time with the other PCs and making sure we’re

all on the same page with policies and procedures helps with issues that may arise,” Lenexa Project Coordinator Vicki Jesse said. “Getting us all together sparked reminders on little details that we may or may not have overlooked after years in the position,” Rebecca said. “It helped me learn more ways to keep things organized, and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to gather knowledge from the other PC’s.” “Being a PC from a remote office, I don’t get to see my counterparts, nor have I met everyone,” Misty said. “I love the fact I had the chance to bond with the other PCs and gain friendships. We appreciate P1’s willingness to put time and resources toward our professional and personal growth.”

we do. We do amazing things!” Lawrence Project Coordinator Diana Korbe says she appreciates P1’s investment in the training. “I think the value of this training is investing in P1’s employees and letting us know that we bring value to the table,” Diana said. “Sarah and Tennille put a lot of work into this to help us learn our roles and ask questions that may not come up when we do one-on-one training. “Having the PCs from all of the offices come together seems to really create camaraderie, and gives them the comfort level to lean on one another when they need help or have questions,” Tennille added. “This is my favorite part to witness.” 

It was very informative, and fun,” Paula said. “I loved hearing the timeline and history about P1, along with explanations of everything

EPM Division Provides On-site Circuit Breaker Repair Shop Repair Capabilities Provide One More Way to Meet and Exceed Customer Expectations

 Breaker Technician Zach Wilburn works on carefully disassembled parts from multiple circuit breakers. According to Electrical Preventative Maintenance (EPM) Manager Jeff Gardner, having the ability to repair circuit breakers on site at P1 has been a top priority.

“When deficiencies are found in the field, often times they can be repaired or the breaker can be entirely rebuilt and made better-thannew,” he said.

In September, 2020, P1 Connection brought you the story of P1 Service’s ship-and-repair circuit breaker service. Rather than taking on the immense expense of total gear replacement, customers having issues with breakers can send the breaker to P1 to be rebuilt.

Jeff says ever since P1 began the on-site testing, it has always been a goal to perform the repair and rebuilding work in-house rather than rely on a separate vendor.

The service became popular enough that P1 decided having our own shop to conduct this work was the logical next step. “A significant portion of P1’s EPM work is performing onsite testing of circuit breakers,” Jeff explained.

“We were fortunate enough to have extremely talented breaker technicians Rich Breeze and Zach Wilburn join the team,” Jeff said. Now, the team has a backlog of circuit breakers needing service, allowing them to hit the ground running in the new breaker shop, located in the Lenexa Warehouse.

“We currently have around six breakers in our shop,” Jeff said. A particularly impressive piece in the shop includes a 5,000v breaker manufactured in 1953, which weighs 1,000 pounds and stands five feet tall (parts of which are pictured below). “There aren’t many folks in the country familiar with this specific type of breaker and we have that expertise in our breaker shop,” Jeff said. “Having the capacity to test and repair the equipment gives us the ability to more comprehensively and efficiently serve clients.” 

IDEAL CUSTOMERS FOR CIRCUIT REPAIR SERVICE Jeff says the target client will have older switchgear in a harsh environment. The older the gear, the better a candidate it is for rebuild rather than replacement. And the harsher the environment, the more frequently the breakers need service. Older or obsolete units are also good candidates, because the client can’t just go buy a new one.  Parts from a 1,000-lb, five-foot tall circuit breaker from the 1950s  Lead Breaker Technician Rich Breeze cleans parts to make older circuit breakers like, or better than, new.

“If their breaker has an issue, their options are to either have the breaker rebuilt or replace the switchgear,” Jeff said. “In today’s challenged supply chain environment, replacement may not be an option. It’s significantly more economical to rebuild the breaker.” Jeff says clients gain the best understanding of this service by coming and seeing it for themselves. “Clients that are already consumers of this type of service have been very pleased to learn we have this capability now,” Jeff said. “But what is most impactful is providing tours of the facility. “Most folks don’t know what goes into making an older breaker betterthan-new. Seeing the process really solidifies the expertise needed and our commitment to quality for our clients.”

P1’s pipe fabrication often includes the production of polypropylene pipe, an alternative - in some applications - to traditional pipe material. Aquatherm is economical, faster to install, and corrosion free.

their business nationwide,” P1 Project Manager of advanced, high-quality air conditioning Todd Mihalchik said. solutions for residential, commercial, and industrial environments. A few years back, Todd led a visit to

P1 has forged a strong relationship with Aquatherm, a supplier of polypropylene pipe.

Since then, magazines like PHC have reported on P1’s capability with Aquatherm fabrication, which has garnered national attention.

“We’ve had conversations about P1’s capacity to fabricate large amounts of Aquatherm, and how we can partner to help Aquatherm grow

Aquatherm’s facility in Lindon, UT, to explore the possibilities.

Because of this attention, Aquatherm made the connection between P1 and Daikin, a large customer and leading innovator and provider

STAY IN THE KNOW! Like us and follow us on

“Daikin came and toured our shop and interviewed us, opening the door for P1 to do some fabrication for them” Pipe Fabrication Shop Manager Jeremy Price said. Director of Business Development Steve Hinshaw explained where the need for a lot of Aquatherm fabrication is coming from. “Daikin’s air-cooled chillers are designed with

Aquatherm manifolds, internal to those chillers,” Steve said. “Aquatherm’s core business is supplying polypropylene pipe and fittings. When Daikin approached them with a large fabrication request, Aquatherm thought P1 would be an ideal partner to fulfill their fabrication needs.” Steve says P1 did a trial project for Daikin to see the quality we can produce first-hand, and that was successful. “We weren’t the only fabricator being considered for the work,” Steve noted. “After an extensive review, audit, interview, and prequalification process, Daikin chose P1 based on our quality and capabilities.” The result is a five-year contract with Daikin to fabricate spools for their chillers. “After the tour of the P1 facility, and seeing their ability and plan to meet Daikin’s needs, it was apparent that P1 is a fabricator Daikin needs as a partner,” Mark Journell, Daikin Strategic Sourcing Manager, said. And this type of work may not stop with Daikin. “This relationship with Aquatherm is already opening other doors for us to fabricate for other Aquatherm customers with high-volume and quick-turn needs,” Jeremy said. 

 Working Families’ Friend: In August, 2019, we brought you the story of an organization that does a lot of good for the community, including our own P1 associates. Working Families’ Friend (WFF) fills a gap most of us don’t think about until we need it.

Celebrating their 19th year in 2022, WFF has provided over $4.5 million dollars in emergency assistance to more than 50,000 people. P1 associates have been among those people, working with P1 HR to arrange assistance through WFF.

WFF was created to fill the need of hard working people facing an unexpected, one-time crisis. Working people don't qualify for traditional social services. These are people who go to work every day, support their families, and help others when they are in need.

WFF is dependent on the generosity of those who can help. Join one of their annual fundraising events, or you can click here to donate. Other ways to donate include: Text WFF to 53-555 or scan the QR code to set up your monthly giving or one-time donation.
