“The impact of technology, data, and the speed of change is driving the need for radical adaptability. Navigating the increasing complexity of our industry will require agility, grit, and dedicated expertise.”
The advanced technologies market, sometimes known as “high-tech” or “deep tech”, consists of the development and implementation of the most sophisticated, cutting-edge, or emerging technologies available. The work these customers do is high paced, data- and detail-driven, and big volume. For contractors like P1, it requires working differently than our traditional methods and markets.

The way P1 does things today won’t necessarily work tomorrow. How we collect, receive, and distribute data, and our ‘speed to market’ is key. Our customers in Pryor, OK, Muskogee, OK, and Kansas City, MO rely on partners who can build it fast, correct, and manage extreme data collection. P1 has invested in these customers, and that means assembling the right teams and being extremely adaptable. Ensuring we’re the player who can provide this result is how we get the work, and there is opportunity for robust growth.
In the video below, Steve Smith delves into the “why” behind the shift to “Advanced Technologies”.

Our vision is to be the pioneering leader in construction innovation by empowering trusted partners through committed leadership while honoring the foundation of those who came before us.
We will elevate the communities we serve and shape a resilient, forward-thinking future.

Formerly known as DIVISION 235 MISSION CRITICAL , the Advanced Technologies Group will concentrate on pursuing and executing projects including hyperscale data centers, semiconductor facilities, battery plants, and emerging markets driven by technological advancements –hence the name “Advanced Technologies”.
Advanced Technologies also includes off-site manufacturing (OSM), the development and pursuit of innovative construction and fabrication practices to support new and existing customers.

Although Division 235 had a primary electrical focus in the past, we have all of our trades ready, giving P1 the advantage of efficiency – we can be the “easy button” for high-demand clients.
P1 believes new projects within the Advanced Technologies Group have the potential to involve all trades, including building technologies, millwright, mechanical, etc.
• Hyperscale Data Centers
• Semiconductor Facilities
• Battery Plants
• Technologically Advanced Markets

PANASONIC: Project Kansas, DeSoto, KS

P1 is already a pioneer in these markets, with
EXPERIENCE IN HYPERSCALE DATA CENTER PROJECTS.
Through this ongoing work, P1 discovered new processes that revolutionize efficiency in our fabrication shops and on-site operations.

Building on our established processes, P1 has the ability to introduce enhanced data management and controls tailored to the rigorous demands of these high-stakes clients, ensuring superior project delivery.

To streamline operations on the multi-trade or dataintensive projects, P1 will use one unified job number for the project, even if multiple trades are involved.
• These projects will operate under the Advanced Technologies Group. They are referred to with an “X” at the end of the job number.
• All current division leaders overseeing other trades will continue full oversight and responsibility for their respective scopes of work.
• P1 will continue to use letter identifiers at the end of job numbers to specify the primary trade, E = electrical, M = mechanical, etc. where applicable.

“I find great fulfillment in applying the 'do-again, do-better' approach to help the team avoid pitfalls, optimize workflows, and grow.”
Senior Project Manager Alejandro Perez is sharing what he’s learned over the course of his career in the trades, most of which comes from leveraging past experience, good and bad, to build a better outcome in the future.
The Overland Park, KS, native says that in his early career, he was in the carpenter’s union, with plans to become a carpenter.
“My only knowledge of electrical at the time was car audio and maybe fixing an overloaded breaker at home,” Alejandro says.
Bakc then, his fiancée (now wife) Whitney worked with the wife of Stephen King – the very same Electrical Senior Project Manager now working at P1.
Stephen offered Alejandro an entry-level estimating job at Mark One Electric, and thus began the career path leading him to his role today.
Alejandro later met P1 Operations Manager Casey Walsh through his work with R.F. Fisher Electric. Several years later, Casey connected Alejandro with P1.
Although originally hired to work as a senior project manager for the Mission Critical division in the Kansas City area, Alejandro pivoted to work with the Advanced Technologies (AT) team in Pryor, OK.
“P1 asked me to help manage the team in Pryor, and I agreed because it’s a good opportunity to put my management experience to work,” Alejandro said.

“My favorite part of my role is sharing lessons learned throughout my own career to help the team improve processes and achieve better results.”

“ One of the things that sets P1 apart is our field talent, and I firmly believe we are here to support them.
“
Even though his life is in Kansas City, Alejandro says he sees great career growth opportunities in Oklahoma due to the abundance of advanced technologies development happening in that region.
“My goal is to continue furthering my role by managing the opportunities in the Oklahoma market,” Alejandro said.
Managing the team and navigating hyperscale clients has its challenges, but Alejandro says using his past experiences to help others improve communication and overall operation is what he enjoys most.
“My favorite part of my role is sharing lessons learned throughout my own career to help the team improve processes and achieve better results.”
He says improving the professionalism, clarity, and efficiency of how everyone communicates with each other, and the customer, has been key.
“We’ve built a ‘trusted partner’ relationship, but we can always turn past lessons into future successes to ensure we continue bringing the advanced skills this market requires,” Alejandro said.
And the P1 team has done just that.
“One of the things that sets P1 apart is our field talent, and I firmly believe we are here to support them. They are out there doing very demanding work every day, under the leadership of Doug Sunderland and Andy Lister,” Alejandro added.
“Their knowledge of this market, ability to manage big workforces, and ability to meet the customer demands is critical to our success.”
Alejandro explains how the advanced technologies market differs greatly from the traditional P1 markets, noting that the race to build AI-ready data centers means hyper-compressed schedules, extreme data navigation, and specific safety procedures.

Alejandro is a twin! He and his fraternal twin brother share the same first name, Cesar, but they go by their middle names, Alejandro and Armando.

Alejandro played soccer on the Olympic Development Program team (ODP).

After high school, Alejandro worked as a window washer where he rappelled in a bosun’s chair down the tallest building in Kansas City, MO, the 42-story ‘One Kansas City Place.’

“Advanced Technologies is completely different from traditional markets.”
Much of the industry's success relies on navigating high-stakes environments where even minor errors can lead to massive financial and reputational losses.
“Unlike a standard construction site, many mission-critical projects involve building or expanding inside or adjacent to an operational data center,” Alejandro said.
“This is completely different from traditional markets, like healthcare, education, and government services, due to intolerance for downtime, specialized infrastructure requirements for AI and 5G, and the sheer velocity of technical change.”
Alejandro notes that P1’s ongoing experience with AT customers, along with our single-source capabilities, have also set the company apart from competition.
“The Millwrights, for example, with the leadership of Marques Nisely, have been instrumental in Pryor, OK,” he said. “We’ve been able to take on additional scopes in the millions.”
“Our fabrication shops are outstanding at manufacturing and skidding equipment, with the support from Scott Bond Jr., Kevin Norris and their teams.”
“All of this positions us for current - and future - success.”
Cheers to taking on the opportunities today that will shape the next ten years and beyond, and the many associates at P1, like Alejandro, helping us get there!

Alejandro, and his wife of 21 years, Whitney, have two daughters, Madeline, 20, and Sophia, 13. Alejandro enjoys coaching his daughter’s soccer team and working on his 1963 Chevy Impala, which he enters in various car shows. When it’s time to “get away” he and his family visit his parents’ 80 acres in Paola, KS, to ride dirt bikes and side-by-side ATVs, shoot clay pigeons, and fish.

Poisoning is the leading cause of injury-related death in the U.S., and National Poison Prevention Week is March 15-21.
U.S. Congress established National Poison Prevention Week in 1961 (prior to OSHA’s establishment in 1970). The purpose is to raise awareness about poison prevention and chemical safety, and chemical safety starts with communication. Hazards exist everywhere, both at work and at home.
HAZARD COMMUNICATION (HAZCOM) – WORKPLACE:
Hazard Communication consistently appears in OSHA’s annual Top 10 most cited standards. (#2 in 2025), also known as the “Right to Know” standard.
KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THE HAZCOM STANDARD:
1. Proper labeling of all chemical containers
2. Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
More detailed information on a product that may not be on the label, such as:
- Exposure limits
- First aid measures
- PPE requirements
- Proper handling and disposal
Accessible to all employees:
- P1 uses the company 3E and their contact information is provided in our safety contact QR code sticker (below, right) and covered in our training.
3. Employee training
• Informs workers of chemical hazards and how to properly protect themselves
• This is included in our annual safety training curriculum.
COMMON JOBSITE MISTAKES:

• Original manufacturer labels damaged or removed
• Secondary containers not labeled
Taking the wrong medication or too much
Store chemicals and medications out of reach of

Parvo is a highly infectious and dangerous disease in dogs, particularly puppies, and Elanco Animal Health in Elwood, KS, has just made a significant breakthrough in the treatment of the disease.
Built to bring the facilities and communities we serve to life, P1 has been an integral part of Elanco’s operations for more than eight years. Most recently, the St. Joseph electrical team completed work on a 25,000 sq. ft. renovation at the facility.
Elanco, (formerly Kindred Bio) has a newly developed treatment for Parvo.
Prior to the development of Trutect™, Elanco’s Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody (CPMA), the only treatment was early diagnosis

and intensive supportive care in a veterinary hospital. With the use of Trutect™, survival odds have increased to 93 percent.
In order to produce this new product, Elanco invested in the renovation of 25,000 sq. ft. of existing space at the Elwood facility.
Burns & McDonald was the general contractor, and P1 was awarded the electrical subcontract with the initial amount of $4.5 million.
According to Project Manager Cris Ray, since P1 has done all the electrical work in the building for nearly a decade, the team was familiar with the building and systems before the project began.
“Elanco had to close all production during this renovation period, so the project was given a strict 18-month time frame,” Cris said. “They were adamant that the project finish on time to avoid revenue loss.”
The P1 field staff worked seven days a week, 12 hours a day for the duration, utilizing anywhere from 25-46 electricians per day.
“This was a complete team effort, and I can’t say enough about the job our P1 team did managing the project and keeping everything on schedule.”
Cris Ray, Project Manager
The P1 field staff worked seven days a week, 12 hours a day for the duration, utilizing anywhere from 25-46 electricians per day.
The project required the removal of some existing electrical systems, and installation of new product to supply the equipment for the pharmaceutical clean room and production facility, including generators and building management systems.
“New generators were tied into the facility to provide back-up power in the most critical areas,” Cris said.
P1 partnered with outside contractor Control Services for all the building management systems, providing critical, advanced environmental control.
The programmable logic controller (PLC) is especially important to the daily operations of Elanco.
“We did all the HVAC controls with Control Services, including the points that monitor the air quality and pressure differentials inside and outside of the buildings,” Cris said.
“Room temperatures and humidity levels need to be maintained at exact specifications to support the integrity of their products, and the PLC makes it possible to monitor all this,”
“If a room gets too hot, they can make immediate adjustments to get the temperature back in range.”
During the course of the project, the freezers also needed to be upgraded.
Elanco rented mobile freezers to store their products and P1 had two weeks to pull out all the existing wiring and install all new.
The team got it done in one week.
“We had the staff working as much as possible in order to get finished on time, but change orders and additions kept coming, which ended up increasing the contract amount from the original $4.5M to $9.8M at the completion,” Cris said.
“Even with double the contract amount, we were still able to turn the building over within two months of the original deadline.”
The job required the support of several foreman, with Brian Miller acting as lead along with Electrical Foremen Blaine Logan, Zach Rever, Lane Evans, Caleb Delaney, and Baily Hazelrigg.
“This was a complete team effort, and I can’t say enough about the job these guys did managing the project and keeping everything on schedule, especially with the number of additions to the project and the hours everyone had to work,” Cris said.
Elanco now has a state-of-the-art facility in which to produce their life saving treatment, and P1 is proud to be part of this critical contribution to animal health!

The winter blues from last issue may be coming to an end as spring approaches. Here are some ways you can brighten not only your days, but your outlook as well!
• When something challenges you, instead of asking, “why is this happening to me?”, ask “what is this teaching me?”
• Pick one unhealthy habit and replace it with a healthy habit. Label it. Write it down. Confront it.
• Sweep cobwebs out of your mind by challenging yourself everyday with critical thinking. Like games? These can help keep you sharp: Sudoku, crosswords, jigsaw puzzles, Wordle.
• Write down ONE win at the end of every day and put it in a journal or jar. It could be anything, from making it to work on time to landing a big project.
• Go for a 10-minute walk outside every day. Too cold? Try five push ups, jumping jacks, and sit-ups indoors.
• Start your day with three deep breaths before starting your computer.
- 4-4-4: Inhale through your nose for four seconds, hold for four seconds, and then exhale slowly.
