What you don’t see when you relax over drinks at one of SERV’s open-air bars is all the careful coordination that goes into integrating the audiovisual (A/V), security, access, and technology systems that create a safe, convenient, and exciting experience for staff and customers.

That’s where P1 Building Technologies comes in. The P1 team installed and integrated all of the A/V, huge video boards, CCTV, access control, network infrastructure/fiber, and structured cabling.

The job came to P1 through a relationship P1 Client Development Manager Mark Rau had with owner company Launch Development.

The project began in Summer 2022, and was put to the ultimate test with its completion on Super Bowl Sunday - and it was a success!

Technologies Project Manager Travis Fleming notes this two-acre venue project is an impressive show of P1’s versatile technologies capabilities for several reasons.

 Multiple big-screen TVs and the finished video walls give visitors the ultimate viewing experience.

“On this project, that included Avigilon, the Assa Abloy family of products, Samsung, and the Pensar LED video boards.”

“This includes interactive training, installation processes/ programming, and exploring exactly what protocols they need us to provide on a network for their systems, all while overcoming procurement challenges,” Travis added.

Travis notes one of the most interesting parts of the completed project is that the technologies are controlled through an iPad, giving SERV staff the convenience of one integrated place from which to control access, manage camera systems, and control A/V interface, TVs, video boards, and sound systems.

“The integration – for these to all interact with one another - was a significant achievement,” Travis said.

Technologies Operations Manager Danny Farnan says the other exciting piece of this project is that it displays P1 Technologies’ versatility, from design to installation, and through completion.

“This has been a great opportunity for P1 Building Technologies to demonstrate our skill sets with many different systems and manufacturers – all within one project,” Danny said.

He says it also gave the Technologies team a chance to expand how they go to market and enhance their business approach as they move into the future.

“P1 Technologies provides diverse systems integration, and we continue to adapt to the fast pace of change in the technologies

world,” Danny said.

“This was truly a group effort. Each team member shared their expertise to collectively bring this project to successful completion.” 

“Those bracelets that say WWJD – ‘what would Jesus do’ – make me think of George," P1 Business Development Director Steve Hinshaw said. "As I walk through our fabrication shops, I often find myself asking ‘what would George do?’”

The George Stuller Award, developed by the UA and Pipe Fabrication Institute (PFI), was introduced in 2022 and awarded for the first time in 2023.

The award celebrates two industry professionals.

The first is George himself. To his peers, colleagues, friends, and family, George was a “giant” in the fabrication industry, working for multiple contractors before creating his own consulting business. His passing in 2020 inspired PFI and the UA to create an award in his honor.

The award exemplifies George’s own devotion to efficiency, quality, innovation - and his undeterred pursuit of the very best practices.

“The PFI organization is 110 years old, and this is the first award of its kind," Steve said. "It was a unanimous decision from PFI and the UA to recognize George, the most influential person the two organizations may ever know.”

In April, 2023, P1 Pipe Fabrication Shop Manager Jeremy Price was the first to receive the George Stuller Award at the PFI/UA Annual Meeting in Tucson, AZ.

Jeremy is a 16-year member of UA Local 441. He served his apprenticeship with P1 and has risen from Apprentice to General Foreman, as well as P1 Pipe Shop Production Manager.

He has known and worked with George Stuller since 2015 on renovations and improvements to P1’s pipe fabrication facility.

In fact, one of Jeremy’s early meetings in 2015 with George was a tour of the P1 pipe fabrication shop during which Jeremy recalls George having a lot of detailed questions.

Although he didn't know it, Jeremy was actually being interviewed for the position of pipe shop manager.

“George was so respected, and considered such a great pioneer of pipe fabrication, P1 CEO Smitty Belcher brought him in to conduct the blind interview, and Jeremy was promoted soon after,” Steve said.

Steve also notes that Jeremy has been at the root of P1’s investments in technology as it relates to the fabrication facility, and has an uncanny knack for evaluating efficiency.

“Jeremy just has an eye for efficiency and the manufacturing process,” Steve said. “He evaluates not only the individual tasks being performed, but the sequence of how multiple tasks are being performed, with an un-ceasing drive to improve production, efficiency, and quality.”

“You have to be efficient, or you won’t get work,” Jeremy said. “And you have to have quality, or your customers won’t

Jeremy says these two things in particular are imperative to run a successful fab shop. That means investing in

technology that can help mitigate the risks that threaten quality and efficiency.

“I’m lucky enough to work with a top-notch team that takes quality control seriously,” Jeremy said.

“When you have 20-plus people working in a shop on multiple projects, they’re trying to produce a consistently high-quality product, while keeping efficiency above the industry standard.”

“It’s challenging to maintain a balance so that neither one suffers,” Jeremy noted. “All fabrication that leaves the shop needs to go out correctly and complete, while everyone still manages to keep pace and work efficiently.”

Two critical pieces of technology are the shop’s CNC pipe cutting machine and the TigerStop. Both help eliminate human error and ensure more consistent productivity.

“George helped me put together the return-on-investment for those,” Jeremy said. “He helped with the shop layout, and mentored me through the whole transition to using that equipment.”

In addition, Jeremy helped negotiate and establish the Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI), which streamlines material procurement and delivery.

Jeremy notes the P1 fabrication shop has a culture you can’t find just anywhere.

“We’re more of a family because everybody has been here a long time,” Jeremy said. “We don’t have much turnover. We have fun but we are always aware that our customersforemen and PMs - depend on us.”

“We’re a productive shop, continuing to get more productive,” Jeremy noted. “And we have good relationships. We listen to the people on the floor, and work as a team.”

Steve says Jeremy’s work with labor contributes greatly to the overall positive culture as well.

“Jeremy works with labor to make sure we have a crew rate in our shop that keeps us competitive, while not sacrificing quality,” Steve said. “He also works with labor to ensure the quality of education that metal trades and apprentices receive as they work in our facility.”

“Jeremy strives to educate new UA members about all the aspects of the trade and industry,” Steve added. “His passion for quality and efficiency is contagious and he presents himself in a professional manner and as a strong leader every day.”

At the end of the day, Jeremy says the one thing he truly takes pride in is the pride of those who support him.

“The only accomplishment that matters to me is that the people who support me – like George, Steve, P1 leadership, and all the people who helped get me here – are proud of what has been accomplished,” Jeremy said.

Associate Profile on Electrical Service Manager Chris Carr

Working at an electrical supply house at an early age ignited P1 Electrical Service Division Manager Chris Carr’s interest in the industry – and in helping others.

Chris’s first job was working for BA Electric in Warsaw, MO, when he was 16. He later moved back to Kansas City and worked at the Lee’s Summit location. After finishing his undergrad at UMKC in 2008, Chris worked for a local lighting company where he operated a bucket truck and performed service work on outdoor lighting systems.

When Chris moved into management at a large third party logistics company, he was managing a warehouse and fleet of drivers in the KC Metro, while also traveling to support other start-up operations.

“It was while doing service work that I realized I had a passion for helping people solve their problems,” Chris said.

His passion for helping people solve problems has been a great asset in his career but it has also carried over into his personal life.

Chris is married, and he and his wife Nicole have three children: two daughters, Nora (10), Aubrey (8), and a son, Mac (6).

Mac was born blind.

“We found out when he was five weeks old that Mac’s optic nerves were not fully developed and that he may have impaired vision.”

“We later discovered he had no vision at all,” Chris explained.

Mac has seen many specialists to help him with his day-to-day life since this discovery.

“Just teaching him how to eat, walk, use a white cane, and hone his speech abilities took a lot of commitment to help him thrive in the sighted world,” Chris said.

A majority of the assistance came from the Children's Center for the Visually Impaired (CCVI) and their Early Childhood Services, which provides education through kindergarten.

When Mac aged out of the early education program through CCVI, the Carr’s options for his continued education were the State School for the Blind or the public school system.

When looking into the options of public school, they realized that many public school districts were poorly equipped to manage the needs of a visually impaired or blind students.

That’s when Chris and Nicole came up with the idea for - a non-profit mission to bring inclusion and awareness to both the sighted and visually impaired provide resources for public schools to 

just to ignore them,” Chris said. “We wanted to do better, by educating people on how to interact with a visually impaired person.”

Blind Spot KC raises money at its annual gala. The gala is set up by the Carr family with help from board members. Last year’s gala was hosted at The Bardot in downtown KC, MO where they had approximately 150 people attend and raised over 140K from sponsorships and auctions (live and silent).

The funds raised support multiple causes, like technology for the blind.

“We buy digital braillers and an iPad that integrates to it so the primary classroom teacher can administer tests and assignments to the students without the need of specialized training” Chris said.

”We also buy games, like the ball-kick game that allows sighted kids to play with visually impaired kids. The sighted kids wear blind folds and the ball produces an audible beeping sound,” Chris explained.

Blind Spot KC also teams up with local organizations to host events where the sighted and visually impaired can participate in activities together. 

In addition, Blind Spot KC provides funds to groups and individuals who are supporting the visually impaired community in some capacity.

One example is the “Blind Rock Climbing” at ROKC in Olathe, an event where sighted individuals are blindfolded and climb 50’ rock walls. For the adults, there’s a “Blind Whiskey Tasting” at Apogee, a restaurant connected to ROKC. 

Other events included “Dining in the Dark”, where individuals spent three hours blindfolded for drinks, dinner, and dessert at the restaurant Silo, and an event at Tall Trellis brewery for a “Blindfolded Corn Hole” competition.

Chris’s wife Nicole works full time at Children’s Mercy Hospital and runs the Blind Spot KC organization while Chris assists by managing the finances and accounting.

“I really enjoy being a part of something that is helping bridge the gap between the sighted and visually impaired community, and hope that ultimately it will help create a better world not only for my son, but the many others like him,” Chris said.

Chris found out about P1 from his wife, who works with the P1 plumbers at Children’s Mercy.

”Nicole frequently mentioned how amazing the plumbers at P1 were,” Chris said.

Chris was just ending a contract position with a company in Virginia, and decided to check out jobs at P1. And it paid off when he was hired as the Electrical Service Division Project Manager.

“I have enjoyed my time at P1. The culture is great, and I really appreciate the “intrapreneurial” spirit P1 promotes for its employees” Chris said.

Chris also enjoys cars, playing disc golf, camping and riding dirt bikes and 4-wheelers with his family. “Both of my girls are avid horseback riders, and all of our kids love anything involving swimming,” Chris added.

Chris says Mac especially loves anything with a motor and anything that stimu lates his other senses (sound, vibration, smells).

“He has a small dirt bike with training wheels (pictured, page 9) and a 4-wheeler. We often go around the neighborhood and he is very good about listening to direc tions (left/right/faster/slower/stop) while I run next to him”.

 Guests from Mars recently toured the P1 fabrication shops in Lawrence, KS, to better understand P1's vast fabrication capabilities in pipe, plumbing, electrical, sheet metal, millwright, and modular industrialized construction.
