P1 CONNECTION

June 2022

WE'RE READY FOR

SUMMER

Finding and retaining talented employees is an ongoing challenge for any organization, especially in this current precarious job market. The need to grow a talent base has become even more necessary, and the P1 internship program is helping address some of these needs for the immediate future and beyond. In 2021, Vice President Glenn Shain led the charge for revitalizing the internship program. He noted that the job market is competitive for all talent levels, but it is nearly impossible to recruit someone for a senior position, referring to the saying “When is the best time to plant a tree? 25 years ago. What is the next best time to plant a tree? Today.” “To create the talent P1 will need in the future, we must invest in those students that will become senior project managers and estimators in 10-15 years...right now,” Glenn said. Sarah Garcia, Director of Organizational and Talent Development, took the ball and ran with it. “Our goal is to get our interns engaged and learning not only about the industry, but also about P1 specifically, so they will ultimately want to become a permanent member of the P1 team,” Sarah said. To keep interns busy, a full schedule of structured events is in place to keep them learning, while having some fun. This year's interns are supporting operation divisions, so they will all spend time with estimating to learn what happens early in the process - and how P1 wins a job - before we get to the point of managing it. The schedule will again include MCAKC events, such as attending industry orientations and tours of union training facilities. An exciting addition this year is a job site tour at Garmin, partnering with P1's Virtual Design and Construction Division, to show how P1 gets from conceptual idea to a 3D BIM Model, and then to fabrication detail documents.

HOME

They will also tour the Architectural Metals shop, which is always a hit. “The Architectural Metal Shop tour last year was a real highlight because Vice President Allen Supplee did such a great job of showing off what the exciting work the division does, and the interns were very impressed,” Sarah said. Safety training is again a priority, and has been enhanced for this year. Vice President Don Campbell will present an hour long Intro to Safety course at the beginning of summer to familiarize interns with OSHA regulations and Experience Modification Rates. They will participate in two jobsite audits on two different days, where they will spend all day shadowing Safety, talking about hazards and looking for anything that might be deemed unsafe. This year, OSHA 10 training has been added, so interns will have an OSHA 10 certificate when they leave. Several tours with vendors have been scheduled again. Along with Marley Cooling Tower and Jorban Riscoe, electrical vendor VanMeter has been added to the program to the broaden the offering of experiences. And last, but not least, there will be several opportunities for the interns to interact with each other through shared experiences and P1 hosted fun events. The two recently hired Project Engineers, Austin Matthews and Kyle Groshong, will be included in some activities too. While all the new additions have been immensely successful, Glenn says there’s always more we can do. “Not only do we have a need to expand the depth and breadth of talent at P1 to support top line growth, we need to be hiring today to replace the talent that will be exiting the market in the next five to 15 years,” Glenn said. “That requires us to plant trees today in fertile soil and nurture the growth so we have the talent that carries on the brand and the reputation that sets P1 apart from a very crowded field.”   Pictured, Top to Bottom: Clinton Gechter and Thomas O'Connor; Jason Quattlebaum and Aaron Martin; Dave Becerra and Joshua Farnan

P1 Service is laying the foundation for a successful future, and making sure associates are armed with the tools to deliver.

 Goal 3 Champion – General Manager Heather Richards-St. Clair

According to Executive Vice President Phil Nehring, the first step was identifying three fundamental objectives: increase maintenance base, retain customers, and increase profitability.

Develop a strategy to recruit and retain talent.

“P1 Service is on a consistent growth path,” Phil said. “The three fundamental objectives all fit together when we find customers for life that share our mission of developing strong partnerships through proven best practices.” Phil explains that to achieve the objectives, four strong goals were developed and a champion assigned to each goal.  Goal 1 Champion – Vice President Rusty Roderick Develop and implement a sales training program to increase profitability and retain our customers.  Goal 2 Champion – General Manager of Service Todd Andrews Improve operations by using historical and analytical data to make informed decisions to improve customer relations and profitability.

4

 Goal 4 Champion – General Manager Andy Dunbar Assemble a task force that explores ways to use technology to enhance our service offerings while improving our client’s environment and operations. One of the most critical components of this training is giving associates a solid set of tools to apply more strategy to sales and execution. From sale to execution, the training curriculum that once existed in a thick binder has been re-engineered to provide a more relatable and interactive experience. New components of the training include an engaging Power Point combined with short videos and group activities to accommodate different learning styles. “An overall objective of Goal 1 is to make the project sales force more focused and intentional in their business dealings,” Vice President Rusty Roderick said.

Session content has been re-imagined for presentation in multiple formats, including animated slides, short videos, and group activities. Rusty says this means learning how to analyze an opportunity more carefully. That means understanding the “what”, the “why’, and how to qualify or disqualify correctly – including learning when it’s OK to say “no” or “not now”. On April 8, the new curriculum was rolled out in two sessions. The Account Management Program roll-out was a collaborative effort by all P1 Service branches to match existing customer base needs with the local teams’ capabilities.

“These associates have had customer accounts assigned to them in some way, and the sales training is all about how to handle a customer from first contact through conducting a meeting.” “The goal is to have more business conversations as opposed to technical ones,” Rusty said. Rusty says the crux of account management is letting customers know we are always there as a trusted advisor, not a just a vendor, for all things related to P1.

“Facility operators and owners are experiencing extremely high This includes the critical skill of connecting a customer with all of P1’s demands on their time to make effective decisions about their building’s capabilities when opportunities arise to introduce another area of the operations,” General Manager of Service Todd Andrews explained. company the customer might need. “P1 Service’s account managers are trying their best to meet these “In a nutshell, we’re teaching associates to be more strategic in demands with proactive planning, new technology, and a better approach,” Rusty said. “It’s better for our customers, and it’s better for understanding of their customer’s business needs,” he added. our associates.” “The Account Management Program is a concerted effort to focus our attention on the right activities at the right time, putting the customer in the best position to take advantage of the resources offered by P1." The Sales and Execution Training is led by Rusty. “Both groups included a cross section of project sales, electrical, service managers and others, all of whom have some level of customer interaction,” Rusty explained.

“Having the tools and autonomy to properly qualify or disqualify an opportunity can reduce a lot of unnecessary stress.” The training will continue through the summer and fall, with each session diving more deeply into the stages of the Sales Cycle and Project Management Cycle. 

2022 Golf Tournament "FORE SAFETY"

On May 7, 160 golfers and a crew of volunteers assembled at the Shamrock Hills Golf Course for the Annual Charity Golf Tournament FORE Safety. As usual, this year’s tournament provided an opportunity for a whole lot of fun all while raising money for a good cause. This year’s proceeds will go to the family of Jay Brown, who passed away in December of 2021, leaving behind his wife, Lynn and twin sons, Justin and Wesley. Final amount raised will be announced at a later date. 

IRISH ROAD BOWLING AND YOUNG MUSICIANS SNAG SPRING 2022 CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP AWARDS

Ok, let’s just address the elephant in the room. What is Irish road bowling? If you read the March issue of the P1 Connection newsletter, you may have caught the term in the Associate Profile on Senior Project Manager Zack Kittle. Zach participates in Irish Road Bowling as a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Father Donnelly Division. And this year, that organization won one of the Spring Corporate Sponsorship awards. “Irish road bowling is our largest fundraiser, done twice a year in the spring and fall,” Zach explained. Road bowling entails competitors taking the fewest throws possible to propel a metal ball (bullet) along a predetermined course of country roads. “The tournaments are very meaningful to me, as they benefit two Kansas City causes: SAFE (Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment fund for first responders), and the Duchesne Clinic, a primary care facility for low-income residents of Wyandotte County.” If only we could bring our next winner’s group to serenade the road bowlers. Wichita Service Tradesman Mansfield Tittle earned the award for the Wichita Heights High School Marching Band, where his daughter is a musician (pictured, above/right). “The award means a lot for these kids because it will help us attain our goals to be successful next year,” Mansfield said. Mansfield explained in his application that although the program is part of the school district, funds are not necessarily available every year. “This will help us purchase new music, or go towards buying equipment for the band,” Mansfield added. “Music is expensive, but to be able to give these kids opportunities to perform for their peers, parents, and school is priceless. Along with traveling expenses, the funds will to go toward representing our school at various marching competitions.” Congratulations to both our winners! Stay tuned for information about opportunities to submit for the next Corporate Sponsorship Award. 

GOOD NEWS Project Jayhawk: P1 was named “Outstanding Contractor” by the owner and GC of this confidential project in Salina, KS. The good work of the P1 team earned them an on-site pizza party.

GOOD NEWS Children’s Mercy: Congrats to Plumbing Foreman Jesse Parks and the team at Children’s Mercy Hospital (CMH). Their good work inspired these words of praise from CMH Chief Engineer Brad Getman. “Our OR 6 boom had a regulator fail causing the brake not to work…a new regulator has about a three-week lead time. When ECA reached out to Jesse Parks with P1 requesting his expertise and supplies, Jesse jumped right in to help. Team work prevailed and the boom is once again operational. With today’s environment when it seems like everyone is avoiding work, it is nice to see people pitching in to get something done even though it didn’t really fall in anyone’s particular lane.”
