Stowers Chiller Replacement Creates Energy Efficiency for Peak Summer Demand With the rising costs of…well…everything, energy efficiency is critical for our P1 customers. One long-time customer called on P1 to make major changes to their cooling in time for peak summer demand. P1 began a relationship with the Stowers Institute for Medical Research back in the 90s. “P1 has a long standing relationship with Stowers, and we are fortunate to be one of their preferred contractors,” Project Manager Jason Larsen said. “This goes back to the original build in the mid-90s when P1 teamed up with JE Dunn to build the campus.” The sprawling medical research facility south of the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, MO, was home to many projects for P1, handled primarily by former P1 Vice President Paul Smith, who handed the account over to Jason Larsen several years before he retired.

The largest Stowers project consisted of more than 30 miles of pipe and was worth more than $40 million. It also won an Outstanding Mechanical Installation Award from the Mechanical Contractors Association of Greater Kansas City. But in order to maintain optimal efficiency, something a medical research facility is highly dependent upon, some things have to change. P1 recently completed the Stowers Chiller 4 replacement, a new chiller retrofit, to help Stowers save money on energy. P1’s Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) and Fabrication divisions played a role in the project, which consisted of a new 1600-ton magnetic-bearing Daikin chiller to replace the existing high-voltage chiller; four new pumps with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), 13 new isolation valves, and automation of the chiller plant for additional energy savings.

Chiller demo “The isolation valves allow the customer to isolate the chiller plant from campus, and isolate pumps for better maintenance,” Project Pipefitter Foreman Will Wall explained. Jason notes the vast cooling equipment housed at Stowers, and how the new equipment greatly reduces electrical expenditure. “Stowers has five chillers, three 750-ton units, one 450-ton unit, and the 1600-ton high voltage unit,” Jason said. “The new chiller replaced the existing high voltage 4160 – 1600-ton chiller. Their electrical bill is based on a peak demand, and in the summer months they use the 1600 ton chiller,” he explained. “When it came online, the electrical demand was high. The new dual compressor, mag-bearing chiller is much more efficient and doesn’t cause the electrical demand to spike as high.” Jason and Will noted the largest hurdle was the one faced by so many these days: getting the needed equipment in a timely manner. “The Customer wanted the new chiller on line by June to meet their peak cooling demands,” Jason said. “We had a three-month delay on the chiller due to COVID spikes, and the suction diffusers were delayed for the same reason.”

To get around this, Jason says the team found a different manufacturer that could deliver materials in a more timely fashion. The P1 VDC team modeled the lines to the chillers, which were fabricated in P1’s fabrication shop (pictured, below). “Along with the new chiller, Stowers has invested in making their whole chiller plant more efficient by automating it,” Jason said. “They have installed new VFDs and controls to ensure they are utilizing the equipment in the most effective and energy-conserving way.” As a result of P1’s long-standing relationship, the P1 Proactive Solutions team also won a service agreement for six chillers at Stowers. P1 is proud to serve institutions like Stowers, providing single-source facility solutions where they are needed most. 

THANK YOU, P1! A Little Generosity Goes a Long Way In these photos, Don Pardew’s face says it all. It is a joy to help others. Thanks to everyone who gave to the clothing drive for the homeless in Kansas City. Your gifts have made a big difference. “Over the past few weeks I have received many Amazon packages addressed to I.H.A.N. Street Ministries, along with in-person donations," Don said. “WOW, what a blessing. It’s absolutely amazing to be able to give people new shoes and clothes. Most are very grateful and happy for the gifts. New or used, they show the same smile and appreciation.” "It’s always a blessing to get to provide for others,” Don said. “Thank you to all of P1 very much for your interest in I.H.A.N. Street Ministries.”

Don has created a way to get fresh water to camps using multiple tanks. It also supplies fresh water to the animals living there.

Dee (above) is a homeless vet, U.S. Marines. Thanks to P1 he received shoes, jeans, shirts and socks.

PATH TO SUCCESS: ASSOCIATE SPOTLIGHT ON

SILVANA ALCANTARA Just as the P1 internship program hits full swing for the summer, former intern and current P1 Project Engineer (PE) Silvana Alcantara is celebrating her one-year anniversary as a full time P1 employee. She came to the PE position armed with experience gained in the P1 internship program, and now both she and P1 are reaping the benefits. Silvana was selected as a P1 intern in the summer of 2019, and even though her time as an intern was short, Silvana feels like she acquired a great deal of experience. She said she didn’t really know anything about the industry coming in, so she asked a lot of questions.

“Whether I stayed with P1 or not, they wanted me to do well and go out in the world and be successful,” Silvana said. Silvana graduated from Kansas State University in 2020 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and took a job in Louisiana. She quickly realized the work environment wasn’t what she wanted and felt it was too early in her career to be dreading the work day. She began looking at a variety of employment options, one of which was P1 Group. “P1 promotes such a healthy work environment, where you also work hard and can be passionate about what you are doing,” she said.

“I was very transparent about my lack of knowledge and everyone was very willing to help me learn,” she said.

“When it came down to deciding, I realized I was happiest with P1, I already knew some people here, and I could be close to my family.”

She also liked the variety of work she experienced, and felt like P1 was rooting for her success.

Silvana returned in June of 2021, and she is thankful that she had her experiences as an intern to draw from. “I still had a lot to learn, but having the exposure as an intern, working with clients, and presenting a professional and friendly face helped me feel a lot more confident this time around.” One of the biggest things she enjoys about her job is the same thing she remembers enjoying as an intern: the diversity of the work. “I really like that there is something different every day and I will get to see new things all the time.” In her short time here, she has already worked on a variety of projects, from a pizza plant to data centers and hotels.

“The systems we install are all similar, but seeing how they go into different types of buildings keeps it interesting.” She is currently wrapping up her first project, Project Jayhawk in Salina, KS, with Project Manager Nick Lawless. “Silvana brought a lot of organization and tech savvy approaches to the work,” Nick said. “She utilized our new Stratus software to help us track our installation progress, provided those progress reports to the contractor on a weekly basis through their FPMS system, and helped ensure everyone was performing their tasks,” Nick said. Silvana said she was very fortunate to be able to work with Nick and is now looking forward to the next challenge. But most importantly, she feels like she now has an exceptional work life balance. “I am excited about going to work every day, but still being able to spend time with my family. P1 has given me that opportunity and I look forward to a successful future here.” 

ADVICE to interns

"Don’t be afraid to ask questions no matter what it is. It could be something as simple as “what is an RFI?” because they don’t teach you those things in school. If you don’t know what something is, it is better for you to ask a question and learn what it is. Don’t be embarrassed because you don’t know something. You will learn a lot more, and it shows that you want to learn. If you feel you want more work or you feel you want to help out with something, take the initiative and go for it. Because at P1 they don’t want you to go out in the field and get hurt, it’s a core value here to teach you how to do it right and do it safely, and if you do it efficiently that is even better!"

OUTSIDE of work

Silvana stays very busy when she isn’t at work. She plays a lot of volleyball and is in a couple of different leagues. She has gotten involved with the MCAKC and plays on their sand volleyball team as well. She likes to hang out with her family and has recently gotten a puppy, Milo, a Corgi-Shih tzu mix.

BILINGUAL advantage

Silvana grew up hearing and speaking Spanish in her home and took classes in high school to learn how to read and write it. This skill has already come in handy on the job with sub-contractors that are more fluent in Spanish. “They are able to communicate better in Spanish, so I was able to make sure they understood the job requirements.”
