How St. Joseph Found Its Groove P1’s St. Joseph Office Reaps the Seeds Sown During Challenging Times Pictured, from left: Shawn Conz, Jason White, Jeremy Miller, Erin Pearl, Bryce McClurg, Misty McConnell, Brad Weilmuenster, Heather Richards-St. Clair, Levi Rutherford

Over the past few years, the St. Joseph office staff and field personnel have worked hard to gain traction in the small community, and it hasn’t been without challenges. But recently, things have really begun to click. Heather Richards-St. Clair took over as General Manager of the branch in 2018, and noted that 2019 was a difficult year. “We had new team members. Everyone was trying to get into a groove with one another and work toward more efficient processes,” Heather said. COVID didn’t help matters in 2020, which started out slow. But toward the end of the year, business really picked up. The office did three quarters of their revenue in the last quarter of the year, rebounding from the slow start. It takes a village, and the cohesiveness of the entire office was beginning to

have a positive impact, with some specific highlights. One of those highlights was the addition of Senior Project Manager/ Sheet Metal, Bryce McClurg. Heather explained that winning contracts on HVAC replacements had been a sticking point in the St. Joseph area because P1 had to give sub quotes, and the General Contractors influence very competitive, low margin opportunities. The addition of Bryce brought sheet metal capabilities in house, and, with his 25+ years in the industry, it also brought many key relationships. This has already made a huge difference in acquiring jobs. “It has opened up a market that previously wasn’t available, and allowed us to move away from bidding through the GCs,” Heather said. “By branching into HVAC replacements with a total MEPS (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Service) package, we have increased our margins and now can often bid direct to the customer,” Heather added. “Now, we are specifically targeting large public HVAC projects that

How St. Joseph Found Its Groove, continued “Leadership they trust, communication, materials, and the support that they need to do the job is what drives a successful field team." -Jeremy Miller invite only mechanical contractors to bid.” This capability led to landing one of the office’s largest contracts – multiple HVAC upgrades with the St. Joseph School District - a contract value of $4,381,743. On the electrical side, business tapered down in 2020, but according to Senior Project Manager/Team Lead Jason White, the flood gates opened in 2021, and everything is happening at once. Jason attributes the thriving electrical business to long-term customer relationships - such as GEM, Inc. and Cargill - that have been built, and nurtured, over the years. Those relationships are really paying off. Jason notes there has been a significant amount of work with GEM Inc., at the Clarios plants in St. Joseph, including process and electrical controls work, along with work at GEM plants in North Carolina and Toledo. Global food corporation Cargill is using P1 for electrical upgrades in their facilities all over the country. Project Manager Cris Ray developed a long-time relationship with Gray Manufacturing doing electrical projects and some intermittent service work. Cris’s work there proved P1 does quality work, so Cris used his relationship to convince Gray to entertain a budget number from Project Engineer Jeremy Miller for a single plumbing project. It turned into a $55,000 contract.

“I learn every day from them on how to work their projects.” In addition to project management, the field crew is knocking it out of the park, and Jeremy says a combination of leadership, appreciation, and support fosters that performance. “Leadership they trust, communication, materials, and the support that they need to do the job is what drives a successful field team,” he said. Jeremy makes an effort to meet with them frequently so they have clear communication and know he is there to back them up. “The field guys are happy where they are, because they feel valued and appreciated,” Jeremy said. “I try to convey that to them every week, if not daily. They take ownership of their projects and step up every time. “Since I have had to be away for training, I have really relied on them a lot and I couldn’t be happier with how they are performing,” Jeremy said. Proactive Solutions Consultant Karley Pearl came on board in 2020. Karley had St. Joseph roots, and that has helped P1 open doors they couldn’t open before. “Small towns can be very close knit, and suspicious of outsiders,” Karley noted. “I find I personally know many of the people I meet with,” Karley said. “So when I say I believe in this company, they believe me. They are willing to give us a chance.” In 2021, to date, Karley has increased the P1 Service maintenance base by $150,480, adding some long- targeted customers to the service portfolio. These include Kawasaki Motors, ICM, and Hillyard, all expected to produce valuable opportunities on the service side of business.

Jeremy was promoted early in 2020, and credits much of his success to his mentors, Cris and Jason.

The St. Joe office is justifiably proud of its current progress, and they understand it hasn’t been just one area or person, but a total group effort.

He particularly notes how impressed he is with their ability to juggle multiple jobs in multiple states, all with successful outcomes.

“It was all a matter of getting the right resources in place,” Heather said.

“It’s amazing the amount of time it takes, and the coordination between these two and the field guys, to make these multiple projects finish successfully,” Jeremy explained.

From the friendly face at the front desk to the talent in the field, it all adds up to future success. 

Keeping it Reel: Electrical Foreman Clint Hines Turns Passion for Fishing into Singular Hobby To say fishing runs in the family of P1 Group Electrical General Foreman Clint Hines is an understatement.

There are other custom builders who have seen Clint’s work, and occasionally push business his way as well.

The Olathe, KS, native grew up traveling every summer to Ontario, Canada, to fish on Corn Lake. The lake is a popular fishing spot for novices and pros alike, known for its variety of fish.

One such person, someone Clint says is considered a founder/icon in the business, is slowing down his rod-building business, and has passed along some of it to Clint.

“I’ve been fishing all my life,” Clint said. “My whole family enjoys fishing.”

“I don’t sell for a profit, I just like doing it and will take orders,” Clint said.

To this day, the family frequently returns to Ontario for a summer vacation. “My grandpa started going when he was 16, and my grandparents returned to the same fishing spot for 50 consecutive years,” Clint explained.

"I’ve been fishing all my life. My whole family enjoys fishing.”

With an avid love for fishing built into his DNA, it’s no surprise that a particular ad on Saturday morning TV caught Clint’s attention one day. “I was watching a fishing show on TV and saw a commercial for someone who builds custom fishing rods,” Clint said. The commercial mentioned available classes and Clint was - you might say - hooked. He flew out to San Diego for a three-day hands-on class. And that’s how he built the first, of what would be many, custom fishing rods. He was so enamored with the process, it became a hobby. “It’s a really neat process,” he explained. “From your basic rod you can use your imagination to start changing things and make it something unique.” Clint says the appeal is being able to build something you can’t buy at the store. While he’s definitely turned it into a hobby, Clint also has a small customer base now. You can see Clint’s work on his Facebook page, Hines Custom Rods.

In addition to fishing, Clint also comes from a family dedicated to the trades. “Across my big family, there are a lot that work in different trades,” he said. “I have several uncles that are plumbers.” In fact, one of those uncles, Jeff Hines, was a plumber pipefitter who retired from P1 (having also worked with the company when it was AD Jacobson). But there wasn’t a single electrician in the family, so that became an area of interest for Clint. After working with his dad in the decorative concrete business, he decided to pursue something new. “Both my parents encouraged me to find a more reliable career in the trades,” Clint said.

keeps it interesting,” he said. “It’s also specialty work, and because I’m working in energized environments, I have to stay sharp to do it.”

He chose electrician, and came up through the electrical apprenticeship with IBEW Local Union 124.

We hope Clint enjoys a long career in electrical – and fishing! 

Along the way, the need arose for techs who could do infrared scanning and testing for breakers and transformers. “I gave it a try because it was something different,” Clint recalls. After more training and experience, Clint found his niche specialty in the areas of arc flash assessment, breaker testing and maintenance, transformers, medium voltage cable terminations, and testing. Clint says what he likes best about his career is his work entails things you don’t see every day. “Helping new people in new facilities solve problems and stay compliant

Passing the Tradition Down “I’ve got a lot of hobbies,” Clint said. “Hunting, fishing, shooting sports, rod building, wood turning – specifically game calls.” But Clint says his two daughters, Azlynn, 9, and Graie, 7, are his No. 1 hobby. Clint and his wife Sarah have their hands full with dance recitals, trips to the lake, and everything that comes with a family. But he’s passing the fishing tradition along, and it looks like Azlynn and Graie are already comfortable on the water hooking a fish or two.

P OI NTS O F PR ID E Do You Have a Family Member Doing Extraordinary Things? "Points of Pride" Celebrates the Families of our P1 Family!

Sam Van Hoecke: Leaps and Bounds above the Competition Samantha (Sam) Van Hoecke says she was too little to be a thrower, and wasn’t really into running, and that’s basically how she found her athletic home in pole vaulting. “It’s a lot of fun, as you can imagine,” she said. “You get to fling yourself through the air!”

Even with Covid putting everyone back a year, the academic junior brought her personal best in 2021. She went to Nationals competing among 16 others, and landed on the First Team All American (the top eight of the competitors) for both the outdoor and indoor events.

The daughter of P1 Group Project Manager Phil Van Hoecke, Sam began pole vaulting in junior high, and liked it enough to look for a college with a good program. The University of Kansas (KU) became her school of choice for that reason.

Sam is busy with vaulting, but also with her education in Pre-Med, another reason she chose KU. Her goals include medical school and a career in medicine

“The coach at KU is incredible, and the program is awesome,” Sam said.

But with two more years of eligibility in pole vaulting, Sam plans to keep competing.

One of the things Sam loves about this particular sport is the “individual-ness” of it. “Everyone is rooting for each other, and your success is based on how you did that day. You’re dependent on your own personal best, and a new day is a new chance to succeed,” she said. Of course when it’s all up to you, that means a lot of hard work and training. Sam also notes that due to the way the sport is structured, with just three attempts to make a given height, you often have to end a meet on a “miss”.

“My plan is to go to medical school after my undergrad,” Sam said.

“Who knows?” she said. “If things go well, I’ll keep competing, and before you know it, we’ll be coming up on another Olympics!” Either way, Sam has a lot of ambition, the talent to go with it, and we wish her all the luck! 

"Sam's mother and I are very proud of what she has done. It's is a rush of feelings every time she does a new best or wins a meet. I still get choked up. The neat thing about Sam is her personality. She still acts like she is at any other meet, always talking to everyone and always smiling, even on the missed third attempt." Phil Van Hoecke, Project Manager/Proud Dad
