 Crossover platforms like the one above improve access throughout the facility.

PULSE OF

EXCELLENCE The P1 Millwright team at Heartland Coca-Cola recently earned the Heartland Coca-Cola Pulse of Excellence Award in the category of “Power of the Partnership”. The award proves once again that P1 is a trusted partner and solutions provider, going above and beyond for customers. The award typically recognizes and celebrates Heartland Coca-Cola employees for their achievements and contributions to the company, but P1’s outstanding performance as a partner earned our Millwright team the honors in 2025.

It began with the success of the mezzanine project, awarded to P1 in 2024. Readers may recall this story from the February newsletter. The success on that project earned the Millwright team an additional interior cross-over project in 2025. The project consisted of nine crossover platforms designed to improve personnel access throughout the facility. These platforms now give Coca-Cola employees safer, more efficient access to production lines for both operations and maintenance tasks.

“P1’s success is rooted in responsiveness, adaptability, and According to Project Engineer Mitchell Stansell, Heartland Coca-Cola consistently delivering quality work,” Mitchell noted. recognized P1 for excellence in dedication, performance, and Not only did P1 successfully complete the mezzanine and cross-over alignment with their operational values. projects, a small crew of Millwrights continues to maintain an “Our team’s commitment has elevated our reputation as a trusted on-site presence.  partner, earning the respect of both Coca-Cola leadership and our industry peers,” Mitchell said.

“Our focus is providing rapid response to emergency breakdowns and supporting ongoing site improvements,” Mitchell said. “We work closely with the maintenance department on chute and grating repairs, equipment breakdowns, inspections, and general facility support.” The team has also assisted with installation of critical equipment, like packing robots.

Mitchell notes that as P1 Millwrights strengthen their partnership with Heartland Coca-Cola, the volume and scale of opportunities continue to grow. In keeping with P1’s core value “the expertise of many, the power of one”, it takes a village to build and maintain a partnership like this one, as evidenced by the teams that have been integral in supporting the work at Heartland Coca-Cola. 

PROJECT VIKING Ethanol Facility

When timelines are tight and execution matters, P1 Service delivers, and the “Project Viking” ethanol facility is a standout example of P1 Service’s single-source capabilities. Located about six hours from Kansas City, the facility experienced production challenges due to an undersized chiller that could no longer keep up during peak summer months. The result was a significant impact on output, requiring a fast, well-coordinated solution. The P1 Service team conducted its first site visit during the second week of January 2025, delivering a complete design-build proposal by mid-February, and securing a signed contract by the end of that same month. The customer also added P1’s mechanical and electrical capabilities to the scope. On-site work was ultimately completed between November 10-16. Service Manager Garrett Whited notes the months that followed the signed contract were focused on detailed planning and coordination around long-lead equipment, setting the stage for efficient execution once the team mobilized. “The timeline on this project was aggressive from the start,” Garrett said. “Our team moved quickly, stayed aligned, and delivered a solution that met the customer’s production needs without hesitation.”

Once on site, the pace accelerated. The existing two-thousand-ton chiller was removed, new piping was fabricated and installed, and a 3,300-ton chiller was flown into place, assembled, and fully connected. Garret adds that from demolition to installation, cleanup, and demobilization, all on-site work was completed in just six days. “The customer was blown away by how efficiently the team executed,” Garrett said. “That kind of response only happens when everyone knows their role and works together.” Project Viking highlights the growing confidence ethanol producers continue to place in P1 Service. By combining speed, technical expertise, and a true design-build approach, the team delivered a solution that directly supported production demands, reinforcing P1 Service’s expanding presence in the ethanol market.  THE TEAM: • • • • • • •

Building Understood:

UNDERSTOOD How P1 Took Total Station Technology Above and Beyond to Deliver Consistent Results Five inches. Seven inches. One foot. Even the smallest miscalculation early in the construction process can snowball into a much bigger problem later on. Enter the Trimble Total Station, an electronic/robotic surveying instrument that measures angles and distances. The Total Station is used for construction layout, site positioning, machine control, and 3D modeling with high precision. When the building is “understood” early, costly mistakes can be avoided. That is why the P1 field and Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) teams have not only embraced Total Station technology, but increased use and training on this tool, elevating P1 to an “industry expert”. P1 began using the Total Station about 15 years ago with just one machine. Today, P1 has nine Total Stations and one GPS unit. The GPS unit for a total station integrates satellite positioning with the precise angle/distance measurements of a traditional total station for comprehensive surveying. This combination allows the field to work efficiently in various conditions, using GPS for general location/control points and the optical total station for high-precision details. VDC Specialist James Dougherty was in the field during early adoption of the Total Station, and helped lead those efforts.   Full new Robotic Total Station kit

“The crews using the Total Station recognized the specific needs and capabilities of this technology in regards to their specific trades. They worked cooperatively to develop practices that fit individual trade needs, also working with VDC to create a fluid exchange of information from the digital space to the jobsite.” -James Daugherty, VDC Specialist

“At first, there wasn’t much consistency in Total Station usage,” James said. “But our field foreman were integral in giving early input so use of the technology could be standardized.”

exchange of information from the digital space to the jobsite.”

“The P1 Trimble layout teams are critical in verifying the site setup process, capturing real world site information to share back with detailers in Virtual Design & Construction.”

James notes the VDC department has intelligence built in, so they can transmit that information to the tablets used in the field, and use the Total Station to triangulate real field conditions, allowing model content to be present on the feed.

James said it also became critical to align the different trades, while still recognizing their respective needs.

In other words, the Total Station brings the BIM model into the actual jobsite, and the result is a more consistent deliverable on every job.

“The crews using the Total Station recognized the specific needs and capabilities of this technology in regards to their specific trades,” he said.

General Foreman Nate Christensen was also on board during the early days of Total Station usage at P1, and says the technology has no doubt improved efficiency.

“They worked cooperatively to develop practices “From underground to overhead layout, the Total Station makes it much easier and far more that fit those individual trade needs, also working hand-in-hand with VDC to create a fluid efficient than in the past,” he said.   Pictured, below, left: Total Station Manager Mike Warner and CAD Modeler Jonah Larsen at Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank, CA. maintenance, since losing any single piece can mean none of it works properly.”

Today, Mike Warner is P1’s Total Station Manager, maintaining the equipment and keeping it in good working order. He also trains field personnel on the best ways to apply the Trimble units, including 10 Plumbers, 15 Sheet Metal workers, 13 Pipefitters, and 13 Electricians (at the time of publication).

Nate adds that from the field perspective, having a “manager” makes their jobs easier.

“Having a central manager ensures the training is equal across the company, so that no matter the jobsite, the units are used in a uniform way,” Mike said. “Due to the high cost of the units, it’s critical to keep accurate record of the equipment

“By having a Total Station Manager, foremen can concentrate on other tasks while they get everything set up to start the job,” he said. “This is very helpful because it’s timeconsuming getting the total station up and running at the beginning of the job.” “It’s also nice to have so many people trained to use the total station,” Nate said. “In earlier years, it was more challenging to get a trained employee on site when needed.” 

7 TAKEAWAYS: Article Summary

 Robotic Total Station at the new KU stadium Mike says P1’s use of the Total Station, along with 3D scanning, keeps P1 on the leading edge. “The speed at which technology is growing in the construction industry can quickly outpace some companies, but P1 has embraced the front line, and continues looking forward to the next technological advance.” “Our use of the 3D scanner in correlation with the Total Stations really sets us apart from other mechanical contractors,” he added. “We are able to go into a building and take an accurate scan, giving our VDC department a more precise model from which to build.” “I would say there may only be one or two mechanical companies in our area that are as efficient and experienced as P1 is with Total Station,” Nate added. “To me, that says a lot.” In fact, the level to which P1 trains, maintains, and uses the Total Station has earned the company expert status outside of P1 walls. P1 is sometimes called upon by local halls and other trade organizations to teach the system and best practices. P1’s commitment to Total Station technology is just one more way P1 is providing innovative solutions through innovative thinking. 

The Trimble Total Station is an electronic/robotic surveying instrument that measures angles and distances. The Total Station provides a more accurate and consistent layout across the jobsite, which helps prevent small errors that turn into costly mistakes. P1 has been using Total Station for more than 15 years, and over that time has embraced the importance of this technology, going from one total station to nine + a GPS unit, which integrates satellite positioning with the precise angle/distance measurements of a traditional total station. Through cloud technology, Building Information Modeling/VDC models can be communicated to the jobsite and applied to actual field conditions. Mike Warner is the current Total Station Manager, ensuring equipment is maintained, and field personnel across trades are trained as needed, leading to a more consistent and accurate deliverable on the job. The Total Station is used in conjunction with 3D scanning, allowing P1 to go into a building and take an accurate scan of the existing place. This gives our VDC detailers a more accurate model to build from. P1 has become an industry leader in Total Station technology, and is asked by local halls and other trade organizations to teach the system and best practices.

Let’s Start 2026

Focused on Safety!

• January 1st marks a fresh start, and P1’s recordable count resets to zero. • Each year, our goal remains the same: ZERO injuries, ensuring everyone goes home the same way they arrive. • Given the hazards we face and the total hours worked across a company our size, ZERO can feel out of reach when we focus on the entire year rather than the actions we take each day • A mile can’t be completed in one step; it takes many (5,280 to be exact). • By focusing on each day, each shift, and each task, we can complete the mile and reach our ZERO goal.

Simple Measures in 2026 to Reach ZERO • Pre-Task Planning: Stop, Observe, Implement (SOI) is designed to be used before every task. When completed correctly, it helps identify task-specific hazards and reinforces proper body positioning and line-of-fire awareness to prevent injuries. • Wear Proper PPE: Every task, every time. • Housekeeping: A simple but ongoing process that should be part of every task from start to finish.

Learning from Last Year • In 2025, the Safety Team implemented initiatives to address trends identified through investigations. These efforts continue into 2026 • 20x20x20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, take 20 seconds to observe 20 feet around you to maintain situational awareness. • Stop the Drop: Prevent struck-by injuries when working at height. Inspect and secure tools and materials, wear proper PPE, and maintain safe positioning. • Focus on Focusing: Don’t let outside distractions impact the task at hand. Slow down, stay present, and perform a quick mental reset, especially during higher risk work.

Key Pillars of Our World-Class Safety Culture • Stop Work Authority: Every P1 employee has the right - and responsibility - to stop work they believe is unsafe. • Report all incidents immediately: This includes injuries, near misses, and property damage. • Communication is Key: The Safety Team is here to support you. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out. We can’t address what we don’t know.
