P1 C NNECTION

January 2023
A Semi Truck DayCab is a type of heavy-duty truck that doesn't have a sleeping berth behind the driving cab. The chassis on a day cab truck will therefore be lighter, which helps improve the fuel efficiency. The truck's light chassis design also lends itself well to easy navigation of tight spaces, such as inner-city facilities. STORY INSIDE 

When it comes to sheet metal fabrication, things can get pretty bigawnd transporting large items requires big trailers and big cargo space.

So P1 went “big” with the addition of a new Semi Truck DayCab. P1 Corporate Fleet Manager Nick Miccoli explains the need for more cargo space, and the trailers that provide that.

“Having a semi truck to pull our 53-foot trailers allows us much more cargo space,” Nick said. “This reduces multiple trips in a box truck or smaller vehicle. We now have the capability to haul our own semi trailers, instead of having to outsource the hauling.”

Steve Hinshaw adds that several meetings with P1 sheet metal foremen - and others with subject matter expertise - were the catalyst for the DayCab decision.

“We conducted meetings with several of P1’s top sheet metal foremen asking them for areas of improvement,” Steve said.

Steve says the group - which included Gary Kluender, Brian Tongue, Dave Wright, Tom Keating, Steve Klamm, Steve Turner, Jason Larson, and Ben Gannaway - pointed out that one semi-load is about the equivalent of four box truck loads.

Warehouse Operations Manager Ben Gannaway was a major driver in the purchase of the DayCab.

“There is time lost waiting for a crane or fork lift – that we typically have to borrow to unload a truck - on a job site,” Ben said. “We were paying for a driver, back and forth four times, instead of just once.”

“It is also difficult to get an outside trucking company to move trailers that don’t belong to them,” he added.

Fabricated duct is one of the most common components requiring significant space.

“Instead of fabricating duct and putting it into a neat pile in the shop, where space is precious, we can now fabricate duct and load it straight onto one of our four new semi-trailers - which can be then be transported with the DayCab,” Steve said.

Nick notes this is the first semi tractor in the P1 fleet, but may not be the last.

“This is the heaviest duty vehicle we have in the fleet, and, depending on future work, there is always a possibility we would acquire more,” Nick said. 

• P1 Construction has 265 vehicles and 27 trailers (and growing).

• Our semi is rated for 80,000lbs GVWR

• GVWR stands for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, and it refers to the maximum amount of weight a vehicle can safely carry, including its own weight, with the driver riding in the vehicle, plus all cargo.

• These vehicles are regulated by FMCSA and DOT so maintenance and upkeep is vital.

Heavy duty trucks require a lot of preventative maintenance:
Pre- and post-trip inspections
Oil
changes, temperature control, inspecting brakes, greasing all moving parts
Tire pressure and tires in general are extremely important.

"Q&A" with Your Newsletter Editors

Happy New Year! The P1 Connection monthly newsletter is a labor of love, and not just from your editorial team. Each story represents the pride our associates take in their work, the meticulous planning and care that goes into a project, and the customer service P1 is known for. Here’s what your editorial team thought of 2022.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE NEWSLETTER STORY IN 2022?

A: BETH MARTENS Definitely the valve replacement at the Atherton Waste Water Treatment Plant (February). I was able to go on the job site, meet the technicians, and see the work in progress.

Q Q

"What. A. Year. Our normal years are fast to begin with, but 2022 – we were on steroids! Not only were we coming out of Covid, but we were challenged with the amount of work to estimate and perform, we were separating Construction and Service to protect us for the future, and we were in the process of implementing the new COINS accounting system for Service. As I have said many times before, none of this would have been possible without the sacrifices you and your family have made. Your patience, dedication, and hard work made it possible for us to have another successful year at P1. It is with pride and enthusiasm for all of us that we enter 2023, positioned to have another record year. Thank you for continuing to strengthen our culture: Family First."

“Another year has come to an end, and even with the transitions we made this year, I’m happy to say 2022 was a great year for P1. That is thanks to you, our associates, who demonstrated patience and hard work throughout the year. As we look forward to what will hopefully be another great year, keep in mind the customers, partners, and vendors who have helped us get here, continuing to nurture and build those relationships. Thanks for all you do and Happy New Year!”

“As this year comes to a close, we have many things to be thankful for. I find myself at times getting wrapped up in all the details of the enormous workload we all have, combined with all the changes we are undergoing. I want to take a moment to thank all of you for the dedication, hard work, the relationships I have had for so many years, and the new ones that are in development.”

“It’s hard to believe another year is in the books and 2023 is upon us. I’d like to personally THANK each and every associate for their contributions in 2022. It was a year of continued growth and new milestones/records achieved for P1 in many categories. We’re blessed to have so many talented, dedicated and loyal associates who continuously perform at a high level. Please accept my sincere appreciation. It truly “takes a village” to ensure that any organization is successful, and we couldn’t do it consistently without each and every one of you. I look forward to building upon the momentum we’ve created as we enter the New Year. I hope 2023 is a happy, healthy and prosperous year for each of you and yours.”

"Thank you for the hard work and dedication each of you has given the P1 Family this year. It’s been exciting to see our company continue to grow and take on new challenges. Here’s to a new 2023 with even brighter promises! We couldn’t do it without you."

Supply Chain Excellence: P1 was the recipient of the “Leaders Choice: Supply Chain Excellence” award from Daikin. The award was presented during the 2022 Daikin North America Supplier Conference in Houston, Texas. Strategic Sourcing Manager Jake Brutlag of Daikin Applied Americas stated “When Daikin found a weak point in our supply chain, we reached out to P1 to assist with fulfilling this need. P1 jumped right in and provided a very high quality product in a timely matter.” Congratulations to P1 and the pipe fabrication team!

HAPPENINGS

Wrapping Up a Successful Year: The P1 Mechanical Foremen’s meeting on December 9 in Lawrence was a big hit! HAPPENINGS

Service Lunch, Holiday Style: The service technicians’ traditional monthly lunch got a bit of holiday flare in December. They were treated to a catered Italian meal, along with chances to win prizes generously donated by vendors. Journeyman Gary Jones spoke highly of the efforts made for these technician lunches. “When you are working in the field, you don’t always have a chance to see the other technicians, so coming in for lunch once a month gives us an opportunity to connect with not only other field techs, but also the service managers and our dispatchers. It also makes us feel appreciated for the work we do.”
