Rom Coms and Wine: t a e r G a r o f Pairings Valentine’s Day As much as I love a good cheesy Christmas movie (as witnessed here), Netflix’s “rom com” selection is pretty great too, and there’s no shortage of romantic shenanigans: assistants setting bosses up, kissing booths, absurd plots, and funny best friends. And what goes better with cheese than wine? Here are my Valentine pairing recommendations.

d e e t n a r a u G e v Lo This one starts off with a man seeking to sue his dating app “Love Guaranteed” because he went on 1,000 dates and didn’t find love. Naturally, he wants his money back. He enlists the help of a lawyer, the typical married-to-her-job single lady. Of course, she has never used a dating app, and her all-too-eager assistants have to make her a profile. She makes it through two (2) dates before giving up. While researching her client’s failed past dates, she slowly falls in love with him. PAIRS WELL WITH: Apothic Inferno whiskey barrel red. This wine and movie go together because, like the wine, the movie is smooth and a little fruity. But it also has a little burn, just like the world of online dating.

e v o L n n I g n i l Fal Who doesn’t like a good pun for a title? A lady fed up with her life in the city soon finds herself in a contest to win an Inn in New Zealand. But it’s a scam! She was hoodwinked and the inn is completely dilapidated in need of full rehabilitation. She decides to dig in and do it with the help of a rogue goat that came with the property, but it isn’t going well. Cue the cute local handyman. He just seems to pop up wherever she goes. Turns out he’s the only contractor in town, and eventually agrees to help. The two agree to split everything 50/50 when they sell. But trouble is brewing when a rival inn owner tries to throw a wrench into things. Will handyman and not-so-handywoman end up together? Watch and see! PAIRS WELL WITH: Yellow Tail Pink Moscato. It’s light and refreshing like the supporting cast, and little over-the-top like the plot. But in the end it all goes down pretty easy.

t a e r G e n o e m So I want to end with an anti-rom com. The main character just got her dream job but has to move across the country for it. Her boyfriend of nine years decides he’s not in on this and breaks up with her. So what better way to get over a man? Going on an adventure with your girlfriends! She and her two besties spend the day trying to find tickets to the most sought-after concert. Hijinks ensue while she can’t stop having flashbacks of the relationship: the good, bad, and ugly. Can she get over him? PAIRS WELL WITH: Margaritas. Forget your troubles (and possibly this movie) with a little tequila. Sweet, sour, and, most of all, fun.

Project Profile: P1 Group Creates Packaging Line Automation Solution for CertainTeed

When it comes to large equipment, P1 Group’s Millwright team can fabricate and install some amazing solutions for customers like CertainTeed, manufacturer of building materials for both commercial and residential construction.

“The roll sealer P1 built in the Millwright Fabrication Shop is not a piece of equipment that existed prior to this project,” David explained. “Several machines existed that did various portions of the work, but none in one unit.”

One product the CertainTeed plant produces in large quantity is roll-sealed insulation. P1 Group provided a turnkey solution to design, fabricate, and install two Metal Building Insulation Roll Sealers.

The sealers had to pillow seal both ends of a roll of insulation at a rate of three rolls per minute. Rolls range in size from 72”, 60” and 48” in length and 24”-26” in diameter and weigh approximately 100-125 pounds.

According to Senior Project Manager David McPherson, Design Engineering lead for the project, P1 was actually able to fabricate a solution that didn’t previously exist.

P1 Group Inc. also provided integration of all of the material handling conveyors from main product line, through the sealers, and finished

QUICK FACTS: • Self-performed equipment installation, field electrical installation, mechanical piping installation and all engineering for the project.

• Provided and Integrated vendor equipment for the project which included:

• Quick-turn with purchase order awarded on May 28, 2019 and equipment start on December 18, 2019. • Contract Value: $2,132,000

• (2) Automated Stretch Wrapping Machines • (4) Automatic Labelers • (1) Pick-and-Place Robot

with product delivery to stretch wrapping equipment in the warehouse.

“Prior, MBI rolls that can weigh up to 100 lbs. had to be manually bagged, sealed, and maneuvered into four roll bundles. These bundles were then gathered by fork trucks and placed into package-wrapping equipment.”

The packaging line included belt, roller, and accumulation conveyors, and an automatic robotic roll placement cell, which transfers a metal building insulation (MBI) roll from a horizontal position on accumulation conveyors to a vertical position on stretch wrapping equipment.

P1 Group’s fabrication and installation of the new “all in one” units not only makes things more convenient, it greatly increases safety at the plant by eliminating the ergonomic issue of handling heavy material and reducing the fork truck traffic in close proximity to workers. 

"The entire project was part of automating a previously labor intensive job,” David said.

Celebrating an Illustrious Career: Spotlight on Theodore "Ted" Thompson

36

YEARS

Ted Thompson, Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) Sheet Metal Specialist Local 2, began his career at P1 Group in 1985 and oh, the things he has seen during his illustrious career with this company.

“There’s so much I will remember, including the unbelievable advances in technology at P1,” Ted said. “But it’s the people I’ve worked with, and just watching the company grow, that are most memorable.”

Of course, when he started as an apprentice 36 years ago, it was with Huxtable and Associates, as P1 Group had not yet come into being.

Ted has been a very memorable part of his colleagues' experience, too.

Ted began his career at P1 Group as a first year apprentice sheet metal worker. After completing his apprenticeship, Ted started running work in the filed as a foreman and air balance technician. He also served as head detailer for many years and estimator for industrial projects. “Ted is always very thorough in what he does,” Operations Manager Chris Champagne noted. “He takes care of every detail and does a complete job whether it is in the field or detailing for the VDC department.

"Ted is never too busy to answer a question or help with a decision," VDC Sheet Metal Specialist Nathan Littlejohn said. "With almost 40 years of experience, he usually has the answer. Nicest guy you’ll ever meet - and a die-hard KU fan." “I loved working with Ted. He carries the best attitude into every situation,” Bret Faris, VDC Manager, said. “Ted was a tremendous asset to our VDC Sheet Metal team and we will miss him greatly.”

“Ted has been a good mentor as well. He is very patient when working with people that are new to the industry,” Chris said. Over the years, Ted never stopped continuing his education. His list of certifications includes: JATC testing, adjusting and balancing; Auto CAD; Sheet Metal CAD; Quickpen International SMACNA Supervisory Training Program; National Balancing Institute; Unlimited Air Conditioning – Master Mechanical; City of Lawrence Mechanical Board; Trimble MEP Total Station. In addition to the ongoing advances in technology, Ted says the most memorable part of his time at P1 has been the people.

Pam Nolte, VDC Piping/Plumbing Specialist, has worked with Ted for many years. “I have worked on numerous projects with Ted,” Pam said. “He was a team player, not only ensuring each project’s success, but was always lending a hand and answering any questions. I leaned on him frequently for his knowledge in the construction field.

Brandon said. "There was a lot I didn't know but Ted was super easy to work with and always made time to jump in and help with coordination, regardless of trade." So now, as Ted prepares for retirement, he says he looks forward to simplifying, and simply enjoying, life with his family.

VDC Piping/Plumbing Specialist Brandon Ruud remembers being new to P1 a little over four years ago, and how much Ted helped.

“Our plans are to downsize and relocate to Florida,” Ted said. “We have family and friends that live there and we’re hoping to have enough room so family and friends who don’t live there will make Florida their vacation destination!"

"Even though I was plumbing and he was sheet metal, he was always willing and able to help,"

Best of luck, Ted. We all wish you well in the Sunshine State! 

“And as a bonus he is a spectacular human being!”
