Unusual Bond Brings 20 New Electrical and Low Voltage Technicians to P1 Group

P1 Group isn’t the only group that embodies “The Expertise of Many, The Power of One.” P1 recently welcomed a group of electrical and low voltage technicians who have worked together for decades, putting aside rank, varying expertise, and barriers to work together as one.

Sound unusual? It is.

Registered Communications Distribution Designer David Becerra worked alongside P1 Group for more than 20 years at Saint Luke’s Health Systems facilities. After stepping away from another organization, he decided P1 Group was a great fit for his next career move.

What happened next is pretty amazing.

David worked with a group of electrical experts over the course of many decades and knew how remarkable their bond was. He says he chose P1 for his next career move because the company embodies its tagline “The Expertise of Many, The Power of One.” He also saw the connection between P1 Group’s philosophy and that of the colleagues he’d grown to trust and respect: a philosophy that has created a rare connection among this group. continued, page 2

“I knew P1 Group was the right fit, and that’s when I started calling the others to encourage them to come and learn more about P1,” David said.

Some of the group have worked together for decades, some members are newer, but Electrical Construction Senior Project Manager Mike Hutchison, who has been working with some of this team for more than 40 years, says what makes the group unusual is their refusal to let typical dividers be a factor.

“In the electrical field, there can be walls between systems and power teams. These guys ignore those walls and work together as a team – all for one and one for all,” Mike said.

“We just click,” Building Technologies Foreman Jeff King noted. “We’ve all been ‘at war’ together in the working environment. We’ve been through ups and downs, figuring everything out together over the years, and that brotherhood just stuck.”

One thing everyone agrees on is that trust is the critical component.

“You know who is going to do what at any given time, and if they can’t, someone else will step in. We can depend on each other,” Jeff said.

“We were a little nervous coming to P1,” Building Technologies Foreman Travis Stewart said. “But now that we’re here, we’re very impressed with everything. If you need it, they get it. We can get the right tools to do the job and that makes us more productive.”

Welcoming this group strengthens P1 Group’s already impressive electrical capabilities, built by the talent of our existing teams in construction and service.

“The addition of these associates increases our bench strength,” Executive Vice President/Electrical Marvin Loecker said. “Their connections and capabilities enhance our connections and capabilities in healthcare and beyond, eventually extending to our many other clients.”

Marvin says the culture fit was apparent right away.

“Our foremen do well together, no drama,” Building Technologies Technician Chase Mikessell said. “They are exceptional teachers and will spend the time to teach you something. And that’s true at P1 Group too.

They want you to learn.”

“We saw an opportunity to increase our capabilities with people that match the culture we promote at P1: quality, safety, and integrity,” he said. “As a group and as individuals, they all fit perfectly with this culture.”

David says he is particularly impressed with P1 Group’s leadership and their commitment to training.

Taking the Plunge into Plumbing Sales Preventative Maintenance Averts Plumbing Disasters

Whether it’s a residence or major facility, plumbing repairs are usually an afterthought brought about by disaster.

This is one of the reasons P1 Group recently welcomed Plumbing Account Manager Dylan Brock to the Preventative Maintenance (PM) Sales and Plumbing teams.

I didn’t know P1 Group did plumbing.

“This is probably the most frequent comment we hear, even from our existing HVAC contract customers,” Dylan explained.

Since taking on the growth of the plumbing service at P1 Group, Plumbing Service Manager Dave Rollo recognized the need to start building awareness among those customers about P1 Group’s plumbing capabilities. Hiring someone dedicated specifically to the sales of plumbing services was the logical next step.

“It’s been a great experience. It’s been a lot of traveling with Dave to not only see the plumbing systems, but to get that customer-facing experience and see how we interact with customers,” Dylan said.

He’s also going out on his own to current customers to measure the interest in plumbing preventative maintenance, something that hasn’t formally been done at P1 before.

“P1 has close to 7,000 total customers, and the easiest way to grow is to use that account base, General Manager of Service Todd Andrews explained. “When we analyzed where money is being spent, the shortage is in plumbing.”

Todd emphasizes the reason is simply because customers don’t know we do plumbing.

A graduate of Kansas State University, Dylan was a good fit, having studied business administration, marketing, and professional strategic selling.

“It’s an untapped sales market for us and we want to develop that,” he said. “We’re not in it for the one-time service call or repair, we’re in it for the PM agreement we will have with that customer for the next 30 years.”

Currently, Dylan spends a lot of time going on service calls with Dave, learning the mechanics of plumbing so he can better understand how to sell our services.

Eventually, P1 Group hopes to expand plumbing preventative maintenance to all areas served by the company, but for now, the Kansas City metro area is a great place to take the plunge. 

Kansas City Proactive Solutions Sales Team Takes on Territories The Kansas City Proactive Solutions team is making a change. Going forward, the four Proactive Solutions Consultants in Kansas City will take on territories that will remain permanent, rather than rotating territories periodically as they have done in the past.

Proactive Solutions Sales Manager Tom Argubright says the change is to strengthen customer relationships and lead to more sales.

The plan is for Ann Liggett to handle the downtown Kansas City area (River Market to Plaza area).

Andrew Tate is taking the Johnson County, Kansas, side and Jimmy Perlick handles the Northland in Missouri. Kim Guthrie will take southern Missouri, including South Kansas City, Belton, and others.

Project Profile: KASB Facilities Improvement Project KASB Project Exemplifies Facility Solutions Capabilities

P1 Group has been a prestigious partner with the Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB) for the past four years, providing facility master planning and solutions to Kansas K-12 school districts. When the Association was ready to renovate their own Topeka, KS, facility, it only made sense that P1 Group should put those capabilities to work for KASB. That’s what the Performance Solutions team of Senior Development Engineer Tim Mense, Vice President Rusty Roderick, and Project Development Manager Bill Frede, set out to do in 2016 when they began the planning process, analyzing the overall efficiency of KASB’s unique facility, which is several decades old.

“The systems replaced were mostly original to the building. Applying spot and emergency fixes had become the established mode of operation, and it was clear a whole-systems solution was needed,” Randy Weseman, KASB Assistant Executive Director/Leaderships Services and Operations, said.

“As part of the master plan development, the Performance Solutions Team started with analyzing the systems to develop the project and come up with the scope and budget,” Rusty said.

The $1.3 million proposal was delivered in January, 2019, and the

work was completed by August, 2019.

Tim says this process is how P1 Group becomes a true facility solutions partner to customers like KASB and K-12: assessing existing conditions, making recommendations, engineering solutions, and putting P1 Group’s single-source capabilities to work.

“All of these capabilities were rolled into one contract for customer convenience, giving them one contractor to manage instead of multiple subs,” Tim said. “One of our differentiators is providing the professional management of the schedule, phasing, and any subcontractors.”

“On the mechanical side, we upgraded the entire building HVAC system in nine weeks, which included the replacement of: three (3) roof top units (RTUs), seventeen (17) cooling only VAV boxes, the removal/ replacement of the existing hot water boiler, the addition of twenty six (26) hot water reheat VAVs and all associated ductwork,” Project Manager Jason Quattlebaum explained. “This was all while the building was occupied by KASB personnel and various tenants throughout the facility.”

P1 Group also installed new energy-efficient LED lighting, added building access controls to multiple entrances, installed a new DDC (Direct Digital Control) building automation system, and even did a

TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) roof overlay, an economical alternative to replacing the entire roof.

CONTROLS BRING COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE

“The choice was simple,” Randy said. “We commissioned P1 to do a complete analysis of building systems because their excellent reputation and quality of work is well-known in the industry.

Last month we introduced you to our new Controls division, and the KASB project is a great example of how that team has worked seamlessly with our other capabilities to provide even more value to the customer.

“I’ve never worked on a project that produced zero change orders, which only serves to underscore the quality and thoroughness of P1 Group’s engineers and installation process.”

“On the KASB project, the controls are a critical part of maintaining the level of comfort the customer desires,” Controls Group Operations Manager Ronnie Rice said.

The KASB facility improvement project is one of many that illustrates how P1 Group’s facility solutions and single-source capabilities save time and money for our customers while increasing efficiency for many years to come. 

“With the complete BMS package like we provided KASB, we are able to break it down into graphic pieces for the customer. The graphics package is the biggest selling point for controls because it provides ease of use, troubleshooting, and accessibility.”

If the operator encounters a problem that is beyond their ability to manipulate, he or she can pick up the phone and call for prompt service from P1.

“We have remote access to the project and are the front line to the customer when there is a problem,” Ronnie said.

“The BMS also sends out alarms via email (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) alerting a P1 technician and the operator that there is a problem that needs to be attended to. The technician can connect remotely via the internet to the project.”

“We now have much more flexibility and control of room-to-room environments,” Randy noted. Monitoring of the system is state of the art, and a remarkable difference to our previous antiquated system.” 

Looks Matter P1 Technicians Go the Extra Mile to Serve Customers

Before One of the first questions a good brand consultant will ask is “How are you differentiating yourself –why do people want to buy from you?”

Here’s one example. P1 Group has a reputation for going above and beyond, and our field experts find creative ways to do it every day. Just look at how service technician Geoff Conatser uses a little paint to make a big impression.

It started out as a routine boiler maintenance call for a new customer.

Boilers are supposed to be maintained to certain standards and inspected by the state each year. When service technicians Randy Pressley and Geoff Conatser met the State inspector on site, they looked the boiler over and quickly informed the customer many repairs were needed before it would pass inspection.

“The company had undergone some major management changes, the boiler had not been kept up to a state level, and the inside was rotted out,” said Geoff.

After the customer approved the bid for repair, service technicians Geoff Conatser, Carl Larsen, and Tyler Dillon went to work gutting out the entire boiler. It took nine days from start to finish and when they were done, the boiler was essentially brand new on the inside.

But for Geoff, the job doesn’t stop there. When he finishes a job, he wants it to look as good on the outside as it does on the inside, so everything he hasn’t replaced gets a fresh coat of paint.

“I figure if we do thousands of dollars’ worth of work, we want it to look brand new when we get done. We want them to be able to see that they got what they paid for,” Geoff explained.

He considers it part of the end-of-job clean up. He uses a wire wheel to knock any rust off, and after a few minutes with a can of spray paint, he has the equipment shining.

“You definitely want to leave the job site looking better than when you got there, but if you can make it look brand new in another hour, then why not,” Geoff added.

And it’s not only about the appearance. Geoff says when you do have to go back and work on the equipment, it’s so much nicer for himself and other techs when it is clean.

“You can’t walk up to a boiler and see that you spent days putting additional cast iron inside. With a little paint, what the customer sees is a nice shiny boiler with a P1 sticker on it.”

Geoff is compiling quite a list of customers where he has transformed old equipment and this is not the first customer that has voiced praise for his team’s work. His end game is starting to catch on with some of the other technicians and when they finish a job, they proudly send pictures to Geoff.

“To me that is cool,” Geoff sad. “It is one thing to be good at your job and it is another thing to take pride in what you do. That is the difference between just doing your job and doing the best you can.”

Geoff’s little extra shine is definitely making a big impression that the customers remember, and these are the details that continue to differentiate P1 from the competition. 

The customer was certainly impressed with the work that the techs did on the boiler as evidenced by the facility manager’s praise for the team.

“From the initial set up, through the final stages and clean up, it has been nothing but a professional joy to work with P1 Group and all their staff. I recommend this organization to all my friends and fellow business owners. P1 Group does quality work and their staff took the time to involve my staff and throughout the entire process.

P1 Group goes above and beyond!” Facility Manager Jacobe Britt said.

“Our technicians did a fantastic job and it looks like a brand new boiler,” Service Manager Ryck Sanders noted “The customer is extremely happy and now they are considering a PM contract to keep the boilers maintained.”

A FLAIR FOR THE DRAMATIC – ASSOCIATE PROFILE “STARRING” VICTORIA HOFFMAN

Maybe it’s the yellow car, the high heeled tennis shoes, or the cat ear headphones, but whatever it is, you can tell right away that Marketing Manager Victoria Hoffman has a flair for the dramatic.

“Comedy is what got me started,” she said. “I really love comedy and the timing has always come naturally to me.”

To her surprise, her comedy routine made the other kids laugh and she loved it. From that moment on, she loved performing and she believes that finding that outlet helped her overcome a lot of her shyness.

The first real show she did was in the 6th grade. The teacher was a former opera performer and every year he would put together a truncated version of a Broadway show for the students to perform.

During a practice, he saw Victoria doing some impromptu comedy on the sidelines and wrote a part into the play to highlight her comedic abilities.

“The award was really surprising and an honor to be recognized by theatre patrons,” Victoria said. “I really enjoyed that role and love entertaining people and making them laugh.”

Even though she didn’t choose acting as a career, her creative talents have been instrumental in her marketing career.

“Everything about her portrays an attitude of confidence,” CEO Smitty Belcher remarked. “I knew that level of self-assurance would make a difference for P1.”

Whether she is putting together a proposal or performing on the stage, she definitely has a flair that is all her own and, as Smitty would say, “Once you’ve met her, you won’t forget her.” 

Don’t Gobble ‘Til You Wobble: Take It Easy While Still Enjoying Holiday Fare Holiday meals usually mean eating way more than you would normally. You will probably down several thousand calories on food-focused holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you’re trying to keep it in check, here are some reasonable tips to help you stay below average at the holidays when it comes to calorie intake and weight gain, while still enjoying all your favorites.

• Don’t just watch football; play football! Plan activities before and after meals that involve movement. People who are physically active are more likely to maintain their weight over the holidays.

• Use a smaller plate. Moving from a 12 inch diameter to a 10 inch diameter plate leads people to eat 22% less food.

• Keep serving dishes off the eating table. That way, it is a little more challenging to help yourself to second helpings.

• Don’t skip meals to save up on calories! Eat healthy foods for your other meals on the day of a planned holiday meal.

• Never go to a holiday event hungry. Doing so may lead to

overeating, as well as possibly nibbling on the snack foods that may be full of unhealthy fats, sodium, and added sugars.

• Focus on filling most of your plate with healthier choices and just having a taste of the less healthy options.

• Try to use the “My Plate” philosophy, where you fill half of your plate with fruits and veggies.

• Say no to second helpings of higher calorie foods. Fill up on fruits and veggies if you are still hungry. NOT veggies like green bean casserole!

• Listen to your body. Are you actually still hungry? Stop eating when you’re full! 

Healthier Dessert Choice: Baked Apples with Cherries and Almonds Any good baking apple, such as Golden Delicious, Rome or Granny Smith, holds its shape beautifully for this dish.

1/3 cup dried cherries, coarsely chopped 3 tablespoons chopped almonds 1 tablespoon wheat germ 1 tablespoon firmly packed brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 6 small Golden Delicious apples, about 1 3/4 pounds total weight 1/2 cup apple juice 1/4 cup water 2 tablespoons dark honey 2 teaspoons walnut oil or canola oil

Preheat the oven to 350 F. In a small bowl, toss together the cherries, almonds, wheat germ, brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg until all the ingredients are evenly distributed. Set aside.

The apples can be left unpeeled, if you like. To peel the apples in a decorative fashion, with a vegetable peeler or a sharp knife, remove the peel from each apple in a circular motion, skipping every other row so that rows of peel alternate with rows of apple flesh. Working from the stem end, core each apple, stopping 3/4 inch from the bottom.

Divide the cherry mixture evenly among the apples, pressing the mixture gently into each cavity. Arrange the apples upright in a heavy ovenproof frying pan or small baking dish just large enough to hold them. Pour the apple juice and water into the pan. Drizzle the honey and oil evenly over the apples, and cover the pan snugly with aluminum foil. Bake until the apples are tender when pierced with a knife, 50 to 60 minutes.

Transfer the apples to individual plates and drizzle with the pan juices.

Serve warm or at room temperature.

⇑ Sweet Tooth: Project Manager Nick Lawless once again led the charge to collect leftover Halloween candy for our troops. Both the Lawrence and Lenexa offices participated this year and 61 lbs. of candy is on its way to Operation Shoebox.

⇑ Cross Training in Controls: The Controls and Service Divisions came together for Niagara 4 certification training conducted by Johnson Controls. The joining of divisions for the training makes our experts more knowledgeable as a team and more efficient in delivering to the customer. ⇐ Supporting the Women of Our Community: Proactive Solutions Consultant Ann Liggett has been active with Underground Social for several years, recently hosting about 40 professional women of all ages at the P1 Group Lenexa headquarters for a “speed mentoring” event, where younger members can sit down with mentors to ask questions about anything they want advice on. ⇑ The Season of Giving: Keeping with their tradition of lending a hand to our community organizations, the Kansas City Proactive Solutions team volunteered at Harvesters, helping out in the warehouse where high volumes of food are coming in for the holidays.
