“P1 PROUD” MOMENTS Associates Share What Makes Them Proud to be “P1” Preconstruction Estimating Engineer Mike Thome had professional dealings with P1 predecessors AD Jacobson and Huxtable & Associates throughout his career, and was so impressed with the quality he came to work for P1 Group in March.

What makes us proud to work at P1 Group? In honor of our 100th anniversary, we asked associates and they shared their favorite things about working here.

Project Manager Nate Pierce is a third generation member of his family to work at P1.

“There has been a family member working for P1 (at that time AD Jacobson) since 1979 - my dad - but also: uncle, aunt, grandfather and two cousin’s husbands,” Nate said.

“P1 has always treated everyone in the family with respect. P1 was the best company in town to work for and held in the highest regard.”

Plumbing Service Manager Dave Rollo echoes the sentiment regarding the reputation for exceptional quality this company has always upheld, even before the P1 Group name.

“Back in the AD Jacobson era, ADJ was known to house the highest quality workers,” Dave said. “To say you worked for AD Jacobson was a huge deal. It was highly respected.”

“During my 35 years as an engineer in Kansas City, I was lucky enough to work with AD Jacobson as the mechanical contractor on many of my projects. As time moved on, I worked on projects in the Lawrence and Topeka areas with Huxtable & Associates. These were always great experiences,” Mike explained.

“Both of these companies were very professional and ethical in their business dealings – something not always found in the construction industry. This March, I was given the opportunity to come to work for P1 Group. Based on my past experiences with P1, it was an easy decision to make. I am extremely proud to be a member of the P1 team!”

Lucky Dogs: P1 Group Provides Critical Mechanical Construction and Service for Lawrence Humane Society installed allows temperature and humidity control throughout the whole facility, not only keeping the animals comfortable, but helping employees keep the holding and living areas clean.”

Single-source capabilities employed for this project include: • Detailing/Coordination • Plumbing Fabrication • Sheet Metal Fabrication • Plumbing Construction • Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) Cats and dogs alike at the brand new $7.5 million Lawrence Humane Society facility are enjoying nicer, larger spaces thanks to the building’s modern additions and renovations.

The new building not only houses space for the animals, there are multiple meet-and-greet spaces for their human friends to visit with them and hopefully take them to a forever home.

But what most people visiting a space like this don’t know is how critical the HVAC systems are to the safety and welfare of the animals housed inside.

P1 Group partnered with general contractor MarLan Construction, architect Sabatini, and engineer Design Learned, Inc. on the project.

P1 Group installed 21 rooftop air handling units, six energy recovery ventilators (ERVs), 550 linear feet of trench drain, and 13 hose reels.

According to P1 Group Senior Project Manager Zach Kittle, “The work we

“There was very little room above the ceiling to fit all of the duct, piping, etc.,” Zach noted. “We utilized our VDC department to make it easier to fit all trades’ work in the allowable space.

In an article from the Lawrence Journal-World, Interim Executive Director Meghan Scheibe particularly noted the importance of the separate rooftop units.

Scheibe said the new exam rooms are both larger and better equipped, enabling three vets to work at once instead of only one. She said the new shelter also has 21 separate HVAC systems compared to the two systems at the old building. Separate ventilation systems are vital, she said, because the shared airflow in the current building prevented ill animals from being fully isolated from their healthy peers and allowed diseases to spread.

Becoming Number One at Number Two: Associate Spotlight on Dave Rollo ROLLA

Before P1 Group Plumbing Service Manager Dave Rollo was lured into the illustrious world of plumbing, he wanted to fly jets. When he finished high school, he headed off to college to become a jet pilot, but after a year of college, his long distance relationship took a toll and he chose marriage over flying.

to increase and maintain the respectability that P1 had already established.

Dave has been around plumbing all his life. His dad was a union plumber who ran his own business and Dave learned the trade at a young age. When his brother-in-law encouraged him to come work for AD Jacobson, he went.

In trying to grow the plumbing service department, he first needed to establish trust with long-term HVAC customers, and let them know just how good our plumbing service department is. It’s an ongoing process, but Dave says there has been steady growth and consistent profitability.

“AD Jacobson had a reputation for housing the highest quality workers. To say you worked for ADJ was a huge deal. It was a highly respected shop,” Dave said.

“We have built a plumbing service division that has become a respectable competitor in the service industry,” said Dave.

He has now been at P1 for 25 years.

For years, the main functions of a service plumber were small projects and warranty work for new construction customers. Dave recognized the need for a dedicated service manager to pursue work for the service plumbing department and voiced an interest. In 2014, he was approached about managing the Plumbing Service Department.

Since Plumbing Service Manager was a new position, Dave created a business plan that included ambitious goals, but primarily he wanted

“P1 has a reputation for quality in their service department, so that has been the primary focus, while also trying to grow revenue,” Dave explained.

Even with the growth and profitability, Dave feels the most rewarding part of this venture has been building the team.

“Our two main plumbers are two of the best guys you could have and we now have two apprentices that are doing awesome. I think the team is what I have really enjoyed the most,” he said.

Dave believes a team that feels like a family has been key to the growth and success of the department, and when it comes time for additional growth, finding the people that fit into this family will be the most important thing. 

PLUMBER CRACKS Those who know Dave and work with him on a regular basis have been exposed to his sense of humor and practical jokes, and there is never a shortage of one liners. When it comes to his humor, he said his mother and her two brothers were his inspiration. For Dave, being a smart aleck is a work in progress. “Just when you think you have perfected it, someone steps in and takes it to a whole new level! In my family there is some stiff competition,” said Dave. Aside from honing his skills as a “wise guy,” Dave loves anything on two wheels. He and his wife of 26 years enjoy “glamping” and motorcycle riding. They especially enjoy spending time with their sons and granddaughter, Mia (pictured above, getting a little “potty training”). Dave leaves you now with these words of plumbing wisdom: “A flush beats a full house every time.”

P1 Group Earns OMI Award for New Garmin Warehouse Work Every two years, the Mechanical Contractors Association of Kansas City recognizes Outstanding Mechanical Installations from the Metro. This year, P1 Group and Garmin earned the OMI award for their new warehouse facility – building 5 in the “plumbing over $2 million” category.

“The goal of the award is to recognize quality craftsmanship in local projects,” said P1 Group President Kollin Knox. “It’s a great collaboration between contractors, owners, and union.”

Each year, contributions by Mechanical Contractors into the Pipe Fitters Industry Development Fund provides two $10,000 scholarships to the sons and daughters of Local 533 Members.

According to Senior Project Manager Jason Quattlebaum, “The Garmin – New Warehouse project was a high-profile project for Garmin as it now houses the production, manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution of a number of the products they produce.”

“What set this project apart was the utilization of a siphonic roof drainage system in lieu of the standard gravity drainage system. The siphonic system is a fully engineered system that utilizes suction (or vacuum) in the system to essentially pull water from the roof,” Jason said.

“This type of engineered system has strict dimensional tolerances. Considering that a majority of the system is 40’ above finish floor, which was gravel during installation, P1 Group elected to fabricate the entire roof drainage system - mains and overflows - prior to installation to assist in maintaining those dimensional tolerances in the field. It totaled more than 10,000 linear feet,” Jason said.

“By fabricating the entire storm system, we ‘outran’ the installation of roof decking and even outran the installation of the steel structure, so when it came time to assist the GC in getting water off the building footprint, we were ready to accommodate.”

P1 Group’s signature single-source capabilities once again played a crucial role in the success of the project.

Through hard work, dedication, and a continued collaborative effort, we were successful in all aspects and all trades involved on the project.”

The Friend You Didn’t Know You Had

Working Families’ Friend Provides Life-Changing Assistance

He had always been able to provide for himself and his family. But when a tragic accident claimed his leg, life got complicated. Multiple medical bills and an expensive prosthetic leg were making things worse. When physical challenges cut his job hours and he was on the brink of losing his insurance, Ryan knew he couldn’t do this by himself.

spent most of his working life in and around organized labor, where he saw so many people who worked hard and gave back to their communities, yet didn’t have a place to turn for that unexpected need.

His local union connected him with WFF, possibly one of the best kept secrets in Kansas City. WFF’s critical differentiator is they are not for the chronically needy. They are a non-profit specifically created to assist working or recently unemployed individuals and their families who are not destitute and cannot qualify for this type of assistance through other traditional emergency assistance programs.

WFF has partnerships with more than 220 corporations and local unions (including P1 Group) to help employees, through their own organizations, take advantage of WFF services. WFF is also a partner agency with the United Way, which allows them to provide assistance for individuals not associated with a partner organization.

In fact, you can only use their services a maximum of twice in your lifetime. Considering millions of Americans who bring in a solid income are only $400 away from financial hardship, WFF fills a critical need, aiding those faced with that one potentially devastating life event.

Services are not solely financial. WFF will: • Advocate on behalf of people facing a crisis and lacking the time or tenacity to fight for themselves.

• Help people problem-solve and find real solutions.

• Train representatives in the workplace to recognize valid issues with co-workers and help them appropriately address their challenges before they become a crisis • Provide emergency financial assistance ONLY in extreme cases, and only if the assistance we can provide will effectively address the client’s need.

The non-profit was established in 2003 by Mike Montgomery, who

There are no other organizations like WFF in the United States, so it’s no surprise they’re getting calls from around the country – and with no geographical restrictions, they’re happy to help.

For WFF’s leadership, the work is a labor of love.

Vice President Niki Montgomery is the daughter of founder Mike Montgomery. “I was raised from childhood on advocating for working people,” she said. “The people we meet are at a fork in the road in their life. It’s the difference between devastation and staying on the right path. It’s so rewarding to be able to ensure one bump doesn’t lead to devastation.”

“My days are full of what I call ‘love my job’ moments,” Joan said. “The population we serve is the people who support themselves and support this community. When we help them, we uphold those valuable members of our community knowing that they will in turn help others.

Full of Beans Electrical Foreman Bryan Walter sent us this picture from Great Bend, KS and we just had to know what was going on. “We were working on the slab conduit installation,” Bryan said. “Service Technician Keith Everhart is known to the guys as ‘Butterbean’, because he looks like the professional boxer with the same name. Electrical Journeyman Gerardo Padilla was Keith’s apprentice at DST. So he is ‘Baby Butterbean’. Another JW was Keith’s second in command and he became ‘Lima Bean’.”
