P1 Earns “Overall Excellence” Award from Turner Construction

P1 recently received the “Overall Excellence, Large Company” award from Turner Construction. The award recognizes trade partners who demonstrate overall job performance excellence, and exemplify outstanding dedication and commitment to delivering a high-quality product safely and on time for Turner clients.

P1 was nominated for projects spanning both electrical and mechanical capabilities, including the University of Kansas (KU) Stadium Enabling Package and Allen Fieldhouse Renovation.

“P1 was chosen for the Overall Excellence/Large Company Award due to outstanding performance on Turner projects in 2023,” Turner Procurement Manager Jerod Junghans explained.

“This was based on information collected by the Turner Construction Procurement Department, but also voted on by the employees of Turner Construction in Kansas City.”

“P1 is the definition of what Turner looks for in a true trade partner,” Jerod added. “You are always willing to help. From the inception of a project to closeout, P1 approaches our projects with a can-do attitude. The safety and quality of work the field crews implement had a positive impact on Turner projects last year.”

While the award was based on all P1/Turner projects, Jerod noted P1 efforts to date on the Allen Fieldhouse Renovations and 11th & Mississippi KU

Football projects played a significant role in P1’s selection for this award.

P1 Vice President Steve Smith accepted the award at Turner Construction’s Trade Partner Awards event in late February.

“This honor not only validates our team's efforts and commitment to excellence, it also solidifies our partnership and shared belief in delivering exceptional quality and service to our clients,” Steve said.

The trust and confidence Turner has placed in P1 has been instrumental to our growth and accomplishments,” Steve added.

“Our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, quality, and innovation remains unwavering, and we are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead as we continue this trade partnership.” 

Impressive Trajectory:

Zach Wagner’s sport was soccer growing up, so when it came time to choose a college, he wanted to attend a school that would allow him to play collegiate soccer while also pursuing an engineering degree.

"After weighing my options, I had the opportunity to stay close to home and play Soccer at Fort Hayes State,” Zach said.

“The physics program allowed me to go three years at Fort Hayes State, then transfer to Kansas State University to pursue my Mechanical Engineering Degree.”

Zach says he originally hoped to pursue the aeronautical side of engineering.

During his transfer from Fort Hays State to K-State, Zach was also looking for an internship that might help him gain some experience.

He learned about P1 from a family friend who knew P1 CEO Smitty Belcher.

“She gave me Smitty’s contact information, and encouraged me to connect,” Zach recalled.

Smitty replied directly to Zach, and soon after, Zach found himself interviewing with P1 executives Phil Nehring and Rusty Roderick.

Zach was brought on as an intern to work in Lenexa with Rusty and the Performance Solutions team.

That’s where Zach’s planned trajectory took a new turn.

"The internship showed me a side of engineering I didn’t know well, and I really enjoyed this HVAC and plumbing side,” Zach said. “Going to a variety of job sites and seeing how all kinds of different systems work was fascinating – it was rarely the same thing twice.”

“It gave me a new direction for what I wanted to pursue at K-State.”

Zach ended up completing two internships at P1 - the first in Lenexa during the summer of 2021 and the second in Wichita during the summer of 2023.

Towards the end of his second internship in Wichita, General Manager Andy Dunbar and Project Sales Manager Casey Rohaus invited Zach to apply for a full-time position.

“They let me know that if I wanted to come back and work at P1, the

Wichita office could use my skill set, and there was opportunity to make an impact.”

"I felt like my internship last summer was my interview to secure a position with P1," Zach stated.

In November, Zach accepted a position with P1 as a Project Engineer, citing culture as a major draw.

"The culture is what brought me back to P1,” Zach said.

“I have never felt like a number in a large company here,” he said. “I feel like an integral part of the company.”

He was especially impressed that he could communicate directly with the company’s CEO before anyone even knew him.

“At P1, no one is too important to give their time to someone just starting out,” Zach noted. Today, Zach still enjoys the variety his work presents.

"My favorite part of this job is the variety. One week, I'm at a company that makes 150,000 pounds of ice daily, inspecting the exhaust fans for its chiller and compressor room,” he said.

“The next week, I'll be at a completely different type of manufacturing facility. It’s also great seeing something I have designed or developed come to life.”

As for long-term career goals, Zach says he is working toward his Professional Engineering License, which will take approximately five years to complete.

" I'm excited to grow with an expanding company,” Zach said.

“As P1 Service adds branches, I would like the opportunity to move somewhere else in the U.S., and possibly help get a new branch up and running.”

As for hobbies, Zach says he likes fishing and still plays soccer, but his newest hobby is golf.

He’ll fit right in with the Wichita office and all those golf tournaments! P1 is proud to have talent like Zach on the P1 Service team. 

Slips, trips, and falls are often a top cause of workplace injuries. Tripping, falling, or slipping injuries account for more than 300 fatal - and 20,000 nonfatal - fall injuries annually since 2013 [Center for Construction Research & Training]. P1 has had their share of these injuries in the past, with a recent increase. Learn how to mitigate or eliminate these type of injuries.

• SOI: STOP, OBSERVE, IMPLEMENT

Familiarize yourself with surroundings utilizing the SOI before starting in a new area, and stay aware of changes using the 20x20x20 rule: Every 20 minutes, take 20 seconds & observe changes within a 20 ft. area.

• LOOK

Never put your feet where your eyes haven’t been.

• CLEAR PATHS

Good housekeeping should not just be done in your own work area, but also walking paths for others.

• GOOD LIGHTING

A trip hazard becomes more of a hazard if you can’t see it.

• APPROPRIATE FOOTWEAR

Make sure working boots are in good condition and provide good traction.

• SAFE WORKING SURFACE

Uneven ground, weather, or spills increase tripping potential.

• SAFEST PATH

Take the safest path of travel- sometimes the shortest path isn’t always the safest.

• COMMUNICATION

Report any hazards and alert others until they can be corrected.

 P1 EXPERTS GUIDE PITT STATE STUDENTS ON MCA PANEL: The Kansas City Chapter of the Mechanical Contractors Association (MCA) recently invited P1 Service Account Manager Connor Hayes and P1 Construction Project Manager Brady

Kyle to speak on a panel at the monthly Pitt State MCA student chapter meeting in the School of Construction Science. Around 35 students and the head instructor for the MCA student chapter were in attendance. The panel consisted of Connor, Brady, and Chris Swingle, NSC Applied Products Group.

MCA Executive Director Stacy Zerr facilitated the panel and asked various questions about each panel member's educational background and how they got their jobs in the industry. Then it was an open forum for questions from the students. Both Connor and Brady discussed how to be good interns and what to expect. Both were interns at P1 before transitioning into full-time roles. They also discussed challenges they didn't expect as working adults, and provided advice for college students planning to enter the construction field.

HAPPENINGS

 CUSTOMER APPRECIATION: P1 Construction showed some love to our trade partners with St. Patrick’s Daythemed cookies. “We’re lucky to have you as a customer” and the P1 logo was printed on the cookies, which went to multiple GCs and partners in the Kansas City metro.
