Kάπως έτσι αισθάνομαι τώρα, κάπως έτσι αισθανόμουν και τότε. Γιατί η αλήθεια είναι πως δεν υπάρχει πιο λυτρωτικό συναίσθημα από αυτό της επιστροφής. Επιστροφή στις αξίες σου, σε όλα αυτά που αγάπησες με την πρώτη ματιά, σε όλα τα δημιουργικά ξενύχτια. Ναι, και για αυτό το τεύχος ξενυχτήσαμε, όπως και πριν δέκα χρόνια με γραφίστα τον Θοδωρή από τους Amateur ή πριν 15 με τον Στάθη. Θυμάμαι την ψυχραιμία της Δανάης και τις μεταμεσονύκτιες εκρήξεις τρέλας της Νέλης, αρχισυντάκτριες και οι δύο. Κάπως έτσι και χθες βράδυ παρέα με τον Λάζαρο, τον Μοχ και τη Ναταλία υπομέναμε κάθε στιγμή του γλυκού βασανιστηρίου, να περαστούν οι διορθώσεις στο τελευταίο τυπογραφικό, να μην ξεχάσουμε το credit του φωτογράφου, να κλείσουμε επιτέλους το τεύχος.

IN SEB MAN & SYSTEMMAN WE TRUST LAUNCHING THE NEW MEN LUXURY IN MILAN Το Μιλάνο είναι πάντα μια καλή ευκαιρία για να ανακαλύψεις νέα trends και καινοτόμα προϊόντα, συνδυασμένα πάντα με ποιότητα και αισθητική. Με αυτό το σκεπτικό το ταξίδι μας στην ιταλική μητρόπολη για να δοκιμάσουμε πρώτοι τις δύο νέες σειρές SEB MAN και SYSTEMMAN της COTY ήταν κάτι παραπάνω από μια συναρπαστική εμπειρία.

As a result, our trip to the Italian metropolis was a fascinating experience and we were one of the firsts to try the new product ranges by COTY, called SEB MAN and SYSTEMMAN. WORDS BY YORGOS KELEFIS

ιλάνο, Οκτώβριος και εμείς καλεσμένοι στο Garage Italia, έναν χώρο αφιερωμένο στην απόλυτη πολυτέλεια στον τομέα της αυτοκίνησης και στο «Made in Italy». Η επίσημη παρουσίαση των σειρών SEB MAN και SYSTEMMAN γίνεται ακόμα πιο λαμπερή με την παρουσία της Poppy Delevingne, Global Brand Ambassador του System Professional. Με στόχο την ανάδειξη της νεανικής ενέργειας της σειράς SEB MAN (ναι, της γνωστής SEBASTIAN για την οποία σας έχουμε μιλήσει και σε προηγούμενα τεύχη), οι brand ambassadors Matthias Dandois και Billy Huxley εμφανίστηκαν πάνω σε ένα BMX και μια Harley Davidson, αντίστοιχα. Τη σκηνή μοιράστηκε μαζί τους και ο 22χρονος barber και Global Creative Artist του SEB MAN, Aiden Xydis (Αυστραλός αλλά ελληνικής καταγωγής), ο οποίος με τη βοήθεια των δύο ambassadors παρουσίασε στο κοινό διαφορετικά looks, χρησιμοποιώντας τα αγαπημένα του προϊόντα από τη συλλογή. Όπως μάθαμε η αγορά ανδρικών προϊόντων περιποίησης αναμένεται να τριπλασιαστεί την περίοδο 2016-2020. Τι πιο λογικό, λοιπόν, η νέα σειρά της SEB MAN, αποτελούμενη από 12 προϊόντα περιποίησης μαλλιών, styling και grooming, να εμφανίζεται ως ιδανική επιλογή στις αυξημένες ανάγκες της λεγόμενης νέας αυτής γενιάς των “slashers”. Προσφέρει καθημερινή ενεργειακή τόνωση για τους αβίαστα cool και δραστήριους άνδρες καθώς είναι εμπλουτισμένη με γκουαρανά, ένα φυτό γνωστό ως φυσική πηγή ενέργειας, τόνωσης και αντοχής. Παράλληλα, τα εννέα προϊόντα της νέας σειράς SYSTEMMAN, χωρίζονται σε τέσσερα προϊόντα περιποίησης μαλλιών και πέντε προϊόντα styling. Και στις δύο σειρές συναντάμε προϊόντα ειδικά φτιαγμένα για τις ανάγκες των ανδρών με μούσι. Όπως ήταν αναμενόμενο, το treatment από τους ειδικούς της SEB MAN και της SYSTEMMAN ήταν απολαυστικό και τα tips που μας έδωσαν άκρως χρήσιμα.

t’s October, we are in Milan and we are invited to Garage Italia, a space dedicated to luxurious automobiles and “Made in Italy”. The event for the official launch of the SEB MAN and SYSTEMMAN care ranges became even more glamorous, as Poppy Delevingne, System Professional’s Global Brand Ambassador was there to celebrate with them. The aim of the event was to promote the SEB MAN product range (yes, of the brand SEBASTIAN that we’ve talked about a lot in our previous issues) for younger men and for that reason Matthias Dandois and Billy Huxley, brand ambassadors, made their grand entrance on a BMX and a Harley Davidson, respectively. They shared the stage with the 22-year-old barber and SEB MAN’s Global Creative Artist, Aiden Xydis, Australian of Greek origin, who accompanied by the two ambassadors, presented different looks to the audience, using his favourite products of the new range.

They informed us that the market concerning care products for men is about to triple from 2016 to 2020. So, we can understand how this new range by SEB MAN consisting of 12 hair, styling and grooming products comes at the best time to meet the requirements of the market and “save” this new generation of “slashers”. SEB MAN offers everyday energy boost for effortless cool and active men as it is enriched with guarana, a plant known for its natural source of energy, revitalization and duration.

Meanwhile, the 9 products of the SYSTEMMAN range are divided to four hair care products and five styling products. In both ranges, we find products especially made for bearded men.

As it was expected, the treatment from the SEB MAN and SYSTEMMAN experts was delightful and we were very appreciative of the tips they gave us.

UNFORGETTABLE SPANDAU BALLET

α 80’s είναι λάμψη, φουσκωτά χτενίσματα και πούλιες! Αγόρια και κορίτσια χορεύουν κάτω από την ντισκoμπάλα με την υπόσχεση ενός μεγάλου έρωτα. Τραγούδι αυτού του τεύχους είναι το «True» από τους Spandau Ballet, μια ρομαντική χορευτική μπαλάντα που συνδυάζει τη φθινοπωρινή διάθεση του Νοέμβρη με το γιορτινό χριστουγεννιάτικο κλίμα του Δεκέμβρη. Παντρεύοντας το new wave με τους ρομαντικούς ήχους της British pop, οι «New Romantics», όπως αποκαλέστηκαν, Spandau Ballet αποτέλεσαν αγαπημένο boy band στα 80’s και 90’s. Οι low profile ανταγωνιστές των Duran Duran χαρακτηρίζονταν για το αψεγάδιαστο στιλ τους και τη γλυκιά γοητεία που εξέπεμπαν. To τραγούδι «True», που κυκλοφόρησε το 1983 μέσα στο ομώνυμο άλμπουμ, σκαρφάλωσε στο νούμερο 1 του UK Singles Chart και παρέμεινε στην κορυφή για τέσσερις εβδομάδες, όπου και έγινε το έκτο single με τις περισσότερες πωλήσεις της χρονιάς. Οι στίχοι αποτελούν μνεία στον τραγουδιστή Marvin Gaye και τη συμβολή του στη μουσική, ο οποίος δολοφονήθηκε έναν χρόνο μετά. Το τραγούδι γνώρισε τέτοια επιτυχία, που κάποιοι στίχοι του παραφράστηκαν και χρησιμοποιήθηκαν στο διάσημο βιβλίο Lolita του Vladimir Nabokov. Και ενώ ψηφίστηκε το 2015 από το βρετανικό κοινό ως ένα από τα 10 καλύτερα της δεκαετίας των 80’s, πολλοί κριτικοί σχολίασαν πως ήταν «το χειρότερο τραγούδι που ηχογραφήθηκε ποτέ». Λίγη σημασία έχουν αυτά, αφού το «True» μας καλεί να είμαστε ειλικρινείς με τον εαυτό μας και με τους γύρω μας.

Μπορεί πλέον να μην χορεύουμε αγκαλιά υπό τους ρομαντικούς στίχους των Spandau Ballet και να μη βγαίνουμε ραντεβού στα diners της γειτονιάς, μπορούμε πάντα όμως να νοσταλγούμε τα αθώα 80’s, χαζεύοντας από το παράθυρο τη γιορτινή Αθήνα και τους ανθρώπους της.

he 1980s was a decade shaped by “big hair”, shiny dresses and the promise of falling in love while couples were slow-dancing under the disco ball. For this issue we have selected the song “True” by the band Spandau Ballet, a romantic upbeat ballad that combines the November autumn mood with the festive Christmas spirit of December.

Emerging from new wave, they incorporated the romantic sound of British Pop to their music and became the most successful band of the New Romantic era of British Pop, around 1980 and 1990.

They were at their peak at the same time as Duran Duran and were famous for their flawless styling and charming attitude. Their single “True”, was released in 1983 and it was included in the album of the same name. It reached No 1 on the UK Singles Chart and remained there for four weeks, becoming the 6th best-selling album of the year. The song’s lyrics pay tribute to singer Marvin Gaye, who was murdered the following year, and his contribution to music. The song was met with great success and many lyrics were paraphrased and included in the well-known novel, Lolita,

by Vladimir Nabokov. And although, in 2015 it was voted by the British audience as one of the 10 best songs of the 80s, many critics are claiming that it is “the worst song ever recorded”.

“True” is urging us to stay true to ourselves and the people around us: “I bought a ticket to the world/But now I’ve come back again/ Why do I find it hard to write the next line?/Oh I want the truth to be said”. And maybe the times when people used to dance to the romantic sound of Spandau Ballet and have dates at their neighborhood diners are long gone, but we can still listen to their music and reminiscent about the innocence of the 80s while gazing out of the window to the Christmas view of Athens and its people. spandauballet.com

huck Taylor All Star Lift and platform sneakers are the signature designs of the Converse x Miley Cyrus collaboration, upgrading the classic Chuck Taylor with the use of EVA Foam.

The collection includes vinyl and velvet sneakers, offering us two different styles to choose from, in order to create colourful and bold looks for the holidays. ο καθιερωμένο fashion event του περιοδικού OZON σε συνεργασία με τον ραδιοφωνικό σταθμό OFFRADIO, «στεγάστηκε» για δεύτερη φορά στο πιο hip ξενοδοχείο του κέντρου της Θεσσαλονίκης, Colors Urban Hotel, όπου και ολοκληρώθηκε με απόλυτη επιτυχία!

The Fashion Room Service Thessaloniki made its very successful comeback at Thessaloniki on Wednesday October 31st 2018, at the Colors Urban Hotel!

T

he already established fashion event organized by OZON Magazine in collaboration with the radio station, OFFRADIO, was held for the second time at the hottest hotel of the centre of Thessaloniki, Colors Urban Hotel, and was met with great success.

On Wednesday afternoon, Colors Urban Hotel became the meeting point of fashion and styling lovers and, until late at night, the whole city attended the glamorous building at 13 Tsimiski Street! People from the fashion and design world as well as journalists were there among 2.500 others and they kept coming as the party continued.

The colorful urban rooms at the 3rd, 4th and 5th floor of the hotel were transformed by designers into small fashion showrooms that hosted unique brands from both Thessaloniki and Athens.

From 16:00 in the afternoon until midnight everyone could walk around and see: minimal eyewear by the brand KOMONO, luxury fashion pieces by PAIO CONCEPT, handmade naval hats from TOUKITSOU, bags with bold prints by MONZOUZOU, boho vintage pieces by ALITIA, funky colorful streetwear looks

by BLACKBLOM APPAREL, boho hippie-style jewellery by ARTEXNIMA, very elegant clothing and accessories made in Italy by ELISA CAVALETTI, clothing for women and men from the casual chic brands CHRISTINA TSADARI and PARA TODOS, creations by the designer GIAKOUM (Fotis Yakoumatos), the crème de la crème collections by PRIME TIMERS, stunning designs from the Fall/Winter 18 collection by SAUCONY ORIGINALS, unique clothing and jewellery by OZON BOUTIQUE, the urban athleisure winter collection by FILA, imaginative wooden bags from WE by WOOD EXPERIENCE, jewellery of unique taste by LASKARINA and the music room by the radio station, OFFRADIO. And since it was the night of Halloween, INGLOT offered to do special Halloween make-up looks to everyone attending!

As in every Fashion Room Service, all guests, after navigating the rooms, ended up at the very talked-about ABSOLUT party at the Garden Bar of the hotel. The party started around 20:00 and the guests were offered the cold signature long drinks: Absolut Sicilian Lemon Tonic, Absolut Pink Grapefruit Soda and Absolut Ginger Ale, while Nikos Komninos, dj and OFFRADIO producer, entertained them with his music choices. Agios Minas Street was flooded with the Fashion Room Service guests, and they quickly turned it into a huge street party!

εν πρόκειται μόνο για την ξεγνοιασιά, τη χαλάρωση, την αποσυμπίεση από τη ρουτίνα. Είναι αυτές οι μέρες που διαχωρίζουν το παρελθόν από το μέλλον. Αν το σκεφτεί κανείς, το τέλος των διακοπών σηματοδοτεί την έναρξη της χρονιάς και όλων όσων αυτή φέρει. Επομένως, οι διακοπές είναι πολύ περισσότερα από ανέμελες βουτιές, έλλειψη ξυπνητηριού και άπλετο χρόνο χωρίς καταπίεση. Είναι σίγουρα πηγή μιας ενέργειας που θα εξαργυρωθεί στη «μετά διακοπών» περίοδο αλλά είναι και ορόσημο των νέων/παλιών προκλήσεων. Αν υπάρχει ένας σχεδιαστής που υιοθετεί και παράλληλα μετουσιώνει αυτή τη θεμελιώδη έννοια των διακοπών, αυτός είναι δίχως αμφιβολία ο Simon Porte Jacquemus. Γεννημένος το 1990 στη Νότια Γαλλία, δεν θα μπορούσε να μην αγαπάει όλα τα cliché συστατικά των καλοκαιρινών διακοπών: το λευκό, το μπλε, τον ήλιο, τα φρούτα, όπως σημειώνεται στο bio του στο Ιnstagram. Και μπορεί οι διακοπές ενός παιδιού σε ένα μικρό χωριό στη γαλλική Provence να ήταν συνυφασμένες με το να πουλάει λεβάντα στους τουρίστες, αλλά αυτό δεν εμπόδισε τον νεαρό Jacquemus να ονειρεύεται μια καριέρα στον χώρο της μόδας. Ο ίδιος έχει δηλώσει πως ήταν τόσο αποφασισμένος να πάει στο Παρίσι και να κυνηγήσει το όνειρό του που είχε απομνημονεύσει τις παριζιάνικες πινακίδες αυτοκινήτων και πήγαινε πάντα πρώτα σε αυτούς για να πουλήσει τη λεβάντα. Χωρίς ούτε μια μέρα καθυστέρηση, όταν ενηλικιώνεται, μετακομίζει στο Παρίσι και ξεκινάει τα μαθήματα σε σχολή σχεδίου μόδας. Οι απογοητεύσεις δεν έρχονται μόνο από τη σκληρή «Πόλη του Φωτός», αλλά και από την αδιαφορία των καθηγητών του στη σχολή. Μετά από δύο μήνες, την εγκαταλείπει και μετά από μια σύντομη διακοπή, δημιουργεί τον οίκο Jacquemus μόλις στα 19 του. Η αρχή ήταν τόσο δύσκολη που οι πρώτες του συλλογές ήταν μινιμαλιστικές κατ’ ανάγκην αφού δεν μπορούσε να καλύψει το κόστος των υλικών. Χωρίς budget και με ένα blog που δεν παρουσίαζε μόνο τις δημιουργίες του αλλά και τον ίδιο του τον εαυτό αναφορικά με τις εμπνεύσεις του, κατάφερε να τραβήξει την προσοχή της σχεδιάστριας - θρύλου του οίκου Comme des Garçons. Η Rei Kawakubo θεώρησε πως ο σχεδιαστής που κρύβεται πίσω από μια τέτοια συλλογή, έχει μια πολύ δυνατή άποψη για τη μόδα αλλά και για τον ίδιο. Μάλιστα, ο Jacquemus θυμάται πως είχε γράψει ένα γράμμα στον Jean Paul Gaultier όταν ήταν 9 χρονών για να του προσφέρει τις υπηρεσίες του, με το επιχείρημα πως, αφού θα ήταν τόσο νέος σχεδιαστής, σίγουρα όλα τα Μέσα θα ασχολούνταν μαζί του. Ένα ανήλικο clickbait που ήξερε ενστικτωδώς τα μυστικά του marketing.

acation is not only related to being careless, relaxed and decompressed, away from our daily routine. It’s also about these days that seem to separate what has passed from what is coming. If we think about it, the end of vacation marks the start of a new academic year, and everything that it has in store for us. Therefore, we understand that vacation is more than just carefree dives in the water, lack of alarm clocks and uninterrupted time of lying around. Surely, it’s a source of energy that will be stored and used after the vacation period is over but also a landmark of old and new challenges.

If there is one designer who adopts and, at the same time, transmutes the key concept of summer vacation, this is, without any doubt, Simon Porte Jacquemus. He was born in 1990 in the south part of France and, as a result, he cannot deny his love for all the cliché elements that characterize summer holidays; colours like white and blue, the sun, fruit are some of them, as he mentions in his Instagram bio. And even if his vacation as a child was at a small village in Provence, France, where he used to sell lavender to tourists; this couldn’t hold back young Jacquemus from chasing his dream career in the fashion industry. He has said that he was so determined to go to Paris and make his dream come true that, having memorized the Parisian license plate numbers, he approached the cars coming from Paris, so he could sell his lavender to them first.

Entering into adulthood, he wasted no time and he moved to Paris to begin his studies at a fashion design school. Soon he got discouraged by the cruel living circumstances at the ‘City of Light’ and the indifference that he was met with when he tried to connect with his teachers. Two months after that, he decides to leave the fashion design programme and after a short break he formed his company, Jacquemus , at the early age of 19. He had a rough start and that was the reason behind the minimalistic collections that he came out with at the beginning. He had to, as the cost of the materials was unbearable for a fashion designer at the start of his career. Without a budget and relying only on the blog that he had created, sharing not only his work but also what inspired him as a designer, he got the attention of the legendary designer of Comme des Garçons. Rei Kawakubo thought that the designer behind these collections would have a very powerful view of fashion and his own self. Actually, Jacquemus remembers that when he was only 9 years old, he wrote a letter to Jean Paul Gaultier, offering his services and arguing that he would be the youngest designer of the fashion world and that would definitely get the attention of the Media; an underage boy that instinctively knew the clickbait rules and marketing secrets.

He was determined to reintroduce femme fatale to the present which led him to create the most iconic statement accessory, the oversized straw hat called “La Bomba”. This enormous hat, that has become an Instagram phenomenon, instantly became sold out. It was irresistible among it girls and also turned into a product that was copied by other brands.

The boy, that is deeply in love and inspired by summer vacation, released his collection, La Riviera, for summer 2019 at the beautiful garden of the Italian Embassy. What happens when fashion meets sweet making? The urban aesthetic of the Anamesa Concept store meets the Athenian prestige of the well known sweet shops, called Papaspirou, and together they create a new collection of chocolate delicacies.

t first, chocolate was only enjoyed by royals. Marie Antoinette couldn’t handle her dull married life and used to find comfort in delicacies made out of chocolate, prepared by her personal chocolate maker. Centuries after that, chocolate has ended up being another popular product that can be purchased by anyone. And this would still be true, if Filippos Papaspirou, the owner of the “sweet” empire of the Papaspirou sweet shops, didn’t collaborate with Annousa Mela for the production of a line of premium delicious sweets which act as a reminder that chocolate hasn’t lost its royal identity.

Having as a main goal the successful combination between aesthetics and taste, while keeping in mind the cool vibes of Athens, they came up with four collectible and original products that are colourful, photogenic and delicious. This collaboration is a result of a shared aesthetic and fashion sense, as well as love for sweets. Chocolate is transformed into a desired luxury, something elegant that you can taste. Annousa, who is celebrating the 4-year anniversary of the opening of the Anamesa Concept store later this month, says “Through this collection we tried to build a bridge between sweet making and styling while redefining their basic values in a very modern way". Papaspirou sweet shops manage to contradict the stereotypical Papaspirou sweet shop format, while becoming a modern urban setting that approaches the “traditional” in a new fresh way. Το ΑΝΤΙ δοκίμασε τα ανακλαστικά μας. Πρώτα από όλα το ρίσκο του ΑΝΤΙ ως θεματική. Πριν ανοίξει η έκθεση, το θέμα έμοιαζε ήδη παρωχημένο, μια δεκαετία συνεχούς κρίσης άλλωστε προκαλεί τεράστια κούραση, πόνο και απογοήτευση. Το κοινό ζητάει συχνά από την τέχνη να φέρει ένα κομμάτι αισιοδοξίας για ένα κάπως πιο φωτεινό μέλλον. The ANTI exhibition contested our reflexes. First of all, choosing ANTI as a theme was a great risk. It seemed thematically outdated as the country has been struggling due to the crisis for at least a decade and this can result to weariness, pain, disappointment. The public needs art as a means to evoke feelings of optimism and positivity as well as a promise for a brighter future. You take a risk when you decide to talk about an even darker future and there is always the possibility that you will be punished for doing so. After all who loves the bearer of ominous news?

We also learnt the hard way that during our times in which Attention Economy dominates if you dive in to find the root of the problem, many digital monsters, the so-called trolls surface, feeding off the reactionary backlash. This digital communication-guerrilla mixed with narcissism creates a new terrifying cultural terrain, in which a new selfappointed committee judges your ideology.

Αυτό που υποστηρίζεις σήμερα είναι αυτό το οποίο θα πολεμήσεις αύριο. ● Το ΑΝΤΙ αλλάζει. Αλλάζει σύμφωνα με τη διάθεση, την εποχή ακόμα και την ώρα της ημέρας. Αυτή η συνεχής μετάπτωση των πόλων θετικού-αρνητικού δημιουργεί μια συνθήκη πολιτικής νεύρωσης. Ο ετεροπροσδιορισμός βάσει όσων εχθρευόμαστε, παρά όσων μας εμπνέουν, οξύνει το δημόσιο λόγο και δημιουργεί ένα διαβρωτικό, όξινο περιβάλλον. Η κανονικοποίηση της αντίδρασης την φέρνει στην καθημερινότητά μας με τον πιο φυσικό τρόπο. ● Πολλαπλές ταυτότητες. Η ψηφιακή δυνητικότητα δίνει την ευκαιρία δημιουργίας πολλών ταυτόχρονων και συχνά αντιθετικών ταυτοτήτων. Το πρωί μπορώ να είμαι αόρατος υπάλληλος γραφείου, το απόγευμα συντηρητικός οικογενειάρχης και το βράδυ ψηφιακή Λολίτα. Ενδιάμεσα μπορεί να συμμετέχω σε ένα συνεχιζόμενο παιχνίδι ρόλων φαντασίας στο οποίο είμαι ένα παιδί-νεράιδα. Οι διαφορετικές αυτές ταυτότητες εξελίσσονται ταυτόχρονα και συχνά αντιθετικά και το αποτύπωμά τους μπλέκεται με επώδυνο τρόπο.

he research that we conducted, in order to unravel the meaning behind ANTI, led us to these six lessons:

● ANTI does not address a certain audience. By now, we can be sure that times of certainty are gone. The first thing that we were asked when the title of the exhibition was announced, was “to what are you opposed exactly?”. But we cannot point to something in particular. What you support today is what you're going to be fighting tomorrow. The normalization of reaction makes it commonplace. ● ANTI is constantly changing. It changes according to our mood, the season or even the hour of the day. This constant oscillation between the polar opposites of right and wrong, leads to a political neurosis. The fact that we self-identify based on what we hate instead of what truly inspires us, aggravates public speaking and creates a deteriorating and toxic environment. ● Multiple identities. Τhe digital world offers the possibility of creating many different and often contradictory identities.

In the morning, I can be an office clerk, practically invisible, in the afternoon, I can be a conservative family man and at night I can become a digital “Lolita”. At the same time, I can be participating in a constant fantasy role-play that turns me into a fairy child. And as all these contradicting, different identities continue to simultaneously unfold they leave an imprint of painful complications.

● Λογοκρισία. Η προοδευτική πτέρυγα είναι τόσο επιρρεπής σε λογοκρισία όσο και η πιο σκληρή συντήρηση. Οι θεματικές που επιτρέπεται να επεξεργάζεται η τέχνη καθώς και η συνεχής επέκταση του “no-platforming” του μη διαλόγου με την εναλλακτική δεξιά μέχρι και ην κεντροαριστερά, δημιουργούν ένα ασφυκτικό περιβάλλον στο οποίο έχει ολοένα και λιγότερο χώρο, η αμφισημία, ο σαρκασμός και εν τέλει η ποιητική. ● Μεταφυσική. Η ανάγκη φυγής ή αντιμετώπισης της ζοφερής πραγματικότητας γίνεται συχνά προς τα έσω. Το New Age, ο μυστικισμός, η μαγεία, η επιστροφή των θρησκευτικών φονταμενταλισμών και οι διάφορες δοξασίες και δεισιδαιμονίες αναμειγνύονται με τη λαϊκή κουλτούρα. Από τις συνωμοσιολογίες του ψεκάσματος μέχρι την ανάδυση του διαλογισμού σε βιοπολιτικό εργαλείο η απόσταση είναι δυσδιάκριτη. ● Χειραφέτηση. Η εικόνα του σώματος, η σεξουαλικότητα, οι διαφορετικές ταυτότητες, είναι περιοχές τις οποίες οι φεμινιστικές και queer πρακτικές οικειοποιούνται με μια πολεμική αλλά και μια ακομπλεξάριστη ευθύτητα. Η ανδρική ματιά υποχωρεί. Με μια ματιά ήδη απομακρυσμένη από το ΑΝΤΙ, μπορούμε να πούμε πως το ΑΝΤΙ είναι το τελευταίο πάρτι πριν την καταστροφή. Αυτή η σχεδόν αφιλτράριστη ματιά σε μια ελευθεριάζουσα και θελκτική, άναρχη και μαζί υπερσυντηρητική, βίαιη, καταστροφική και μαζί αενάως παιδική εποχή δεν είναι εύκολο να επαναληφθεί. Μπαίνουμε σε ένα νέο, ψηφιακό, Μεσαίωνα. Ό,τι φαντασιωθήκαμε ως ελευθερία, έχει τελειώσει. Τα όνειρα είναι και τα τελευταία οχυρά μας που αλώθηκαν.

● Censorship. The radical-progressive front is just as susceptible to censorship as the most reactionary conservative. Art is only allowed to touch upon certain themes and the constant expansion of “no-platforming” from the Alt-Right all the way to the CenterLeft, creates a suffocating environment that doesn’t offer the opportunity for ambiguity, sarcasm and poetics to exist. ● Metaphysics. The urge to run away or to stay and face the bleak reality is often an internal process. New Age, occultism, magic, the return of religion fundamentalism and many other doctrines and superstitions are becoming part of the popular culture. We have come to a point where the line between the conspiracy theories of the government spraying us and the emergence of meditation as a powerful tool of Biopolitics is blurred. ● Liberation. Body image, sexuality, different identities are issues that the Feminist and the Queer movement appropriate and fight for with candor, as the male gaze is slowly subsiding.

Distancing ourselves from the ANTI exhibition, we can state that ANTI is our last celebration before the complete devastation that is coming. This almost unfiltered gaze into a liberal, appealing, ungoverned but, at the same time, highly conservative, violent, catastrophic and eternally infantile era isn’t going to recur. As we enter into a new digital medieval period, we realize that freedom as it was once fantasized, is now gone. Our dreams were our last fortress that is now also conquered. athensbiennale.org

LOU THE NEW KID OF SYNTH POP SCENE «Δεν ξέρω να παίζω σκάκι και πάντα ήμουν πολύ κακή στα μαθηματικά». Με αυτή τη φράση συνοψίζει η Lou τις σχέσεις στις μέρες μας, το θέμα γύρω από το οποίο κινούνται τα τραγούδια της. Γιατί αν οι σχέσεις είναι μια σειρά από στρατηγικές κινήσεις και σχεδιασμένα βήματα, εκείνη θέλει να τις βλέπει ως μια ειλικρινή μορφή έκφρασης.

"I don’t know how to play chess and I have always been bad at Maths". With this phrase Lou encloses how she feels about relationships nowadays, a theme that deeply influences her work as a songwriter.

Because even if relationships are a series of strategical moves and well-thought steps, she prefers to think of them as an honest form of expression.

μουσική σκηνή της Αθήνας αλλάζει και η Lou, ανήκοντας στη νέα γενιά καλλιτεχνών, πιστεύει σε έναν αέρα αλλαγής και μια ανανέωση στην ελληνική βιομηχανία, που έχει ήδη ξεκινήσει να γίνεται αισθητή. Οι μουσικές της σπουδές στην Jazz αλλά και η διαμονή της για κάποιους μήνες στο Ελσίνκι αποδείχτηκαν καρμικές, αφού έμελλε να συνδυάσει τον ήχο της σκανδιναβικής ηλεκτρονικής pop και τα όσα είχε σπουδάσει, ώστε να φέρει στην Ελλάδα έναν νέο φρέσκο ήχο, που ξεχωρίζει για τη μελαγχολία και τον συναισθηματικό του τόνο. Η Αθήνα για τη Lou, κατά κόσμον Ελένη, είναι ένα μικρό, έφηβο κορίτσι που έχει κυκλοθυμία, τρέλα και διψάει συνεχώς για νέα πράγματα. Αν μισεί κάτι σε αυτή, είναι το ότι δεν υπάρχουν νυχτερινά ζαχαροπλαστεία γιατί, εν τέλει, η Αθήνα είναι μια αμφιθυμία — ομορφιά και ασχήμια ταυτόχρονα. Αναγνωρίζει τη δυστυχία του να είσαι 18 σε μια χώρα που έχει οικονομική κρίση και, έχοντας ζήσει στο εξωτερικό, καταλήγει πως «στο εξωτερικό δίνονται πολλές ευκαιρίες στους νέους μουσικούς. Στο Ελσίνκι υπήρχαν πολλά επιδοτούμενα προγράμματα που σε βοηθούσαν να ζήσεις μέσα από τη μουσική σου. Η Ελλάδα δεν το έχει αυτό και το βρίσκω κάπως άδικο». Όταν οι μέρες είναι άσχημες, βρίσκει το αντικαταθλιπτικό της στην Grimes και η έμπνευση την επισκέπτεται συνήθως μετά από έναν χωρισμό. Ο έρωτας έχει μεγάλη σημασία στη ζωή της και απολαμβάνει το να νιώθει ερωτευμένη. Όσο για την ενηλικίωση και την έννοια του "μεγαλώνω", "δεν έχω καταφέρει ακόμη να γίνω ένας serious young adult, αλλά είμαι πολύ κοντά. Δεν ξέρω αν θέλω κιόλας. Για εμένα η ενηλικίωση συμβολίζει τη φράση "Να τα πούμε σε λίγο; Δεν μπορώ τώρα, έχω δουλειά". Σε μια εποχή που σου επιβάλλει την απάθεια, η ίδια δίνει σημασία στα συναισθήματα και επιμένει να νιώθει τα πάντα στο έπακρο. «Η μουσική για εμένα είναι πεταλούδες στο στομάχι, ροζ ηλιοβασίλεμα και παγωτό φυστίκι. Θα έφευγα στο εξωτερικό αλλά κάτι με κρατά εδώ. Νιώθω ερωτευμένη και αυτό είναι πολύ ισχυρό». Ετοιμάζεται για την κυκλοφορία του παρθενικού της δίσκου τον επόμενο μήνα από την Κlik Records ενώ παράλληλα πειραματίζεται μουσικά με τον καλλιτέχνη King Elephant. Πρόσφατα έγραψε τη μουσική για την παράσταση «Brandon Teena» και κυκλοφόρησε το κομμάτι της “Do you want it?”. Και αν τη ρωτήσεις τι είναι αυτό που πραγματικά θέλει, θα σου πει ειλικρινά: «Nα κοιμάμαι ήσυχη τα βράδια και να μη χρειάζεται να ρωτάω τον άλλον: Do you want it?»

A

s the music scene in Athens is shifting, Lou, belonging to a new generation of artists, believes that a wind of change and refreshment has already started to become evident in the Greek music industry. Her studies in Jazz and her staying in Helsinki for a few months were meant to shape her music in a unique way, as she combines the Scandinavian Synth Pop sound with her studies in Jazz and introduces to the Greek audience a new fresh sound, full of melancholic and emotional elements.

Lou, also known as Eleni, talks about Athens and envisions the Greek capital as a moody teenage girl carrying the craziness of her youth while she is always searching for something new.

If there is something that makes her hate Athens, is the lack of all night pastry shops because as she points out, Athens is ambivalent, on the one hand beautiful and on the other ugly. She recognizes the difficulty of living as an 18-year-old in a country challenged by the financial crisis and having lived in Helsinki, she says that “there are many opportunities for young musicians abroad. In Helsinki, there were many subsidised programmes that helped musicians earn their living through their art. Greece doesn’t offer anything like that and I find it kind of unfair”.

When she has bad days, she listens to Grimes that serve as her antidepressant. Inspiration finds her usually after a break up, as falling in love has great importance in her life and she deeply enjoys that feeling. As far as growing up goes, she says “I’m not at the point of being a serious young adult yet, but I believe I’m close. I don’t know if I want to be, to tell you the truth, as for me adulthood is summed up in the phrase "I can’t talk right now, I’m busy. Can I call you later?".

Living in an era that forces us to be apathetic she gives great attention to feeling everything to the fullest. “For me, music is butterflies in my stomach, a sunset coloured pink and pistachio ice-cream. I would like to live abroad but there is something holding me here. I am in love and this is very powerful to me”.

She is almost ready for the release of her first album by Klik Records, while she is also experimenting musically with the artist, King Elephant. Recently, she wrote the music for the play “Brandon Teena” and released her song “Do you want it?”. If you ask her what she really wants, she will answer “I want to be able to sleep peacefully at night without having the need to ask the other person: Do you want it?”

SASKE THE NEW FACE OF HIP HOP Ανήσυχο πνεύμα και επίμονος, ο Saske δεν καθησυχάζεται ποτέ. To τελευταίο του τραγούδι «Το ξέρω μάνα» έχει συγκεντρώσει πάνω από 5 εκατομμύρια προβολές στο Youtube και ο κατά κόσμον Οδυσσέας, βλέποντας την καριέρα του να μπαίνει σε fast forward από πολύ νωρίς, απολαμβάνει κάθε στιγμή της δικής του μουσικής Οδύσσειας.

ρχόμενος στην Αθήνα από τη μικρή Χρυσούπολη της Καβάλας, ξεκίνησε να κυνηγά το όνειρό του από έφηβος, στέλνοντας demo του και προσπαθώντας να αποκτήσει τον κατάλληλο κύκλο γνωριμιών που θα εκτιμούσε το ταλέντο του στη μουσική. «Πρέπει να ξέρεις τι αναζητάς αλλά και τι χρειάζεσαι για να πετύχεις. Εγώ το προσπάθησα πολύ και ήδη από τα 17 μου οι δισκογραφικές είχαν αρχίσει να ενδιαφέρονται. Σταδιακά, το όνομά μου άρχισε να ακούγεται και ο κόσμος του χιπ χοπ ξεκίνησε να με μαθαίνει. Η ζωή μου πλέον είναι η δουλειά μου. Από τη μία είναι διασκέδαση, αλλά από την άλλη θέλει να αφιερώσεις χρόνο, να είσαι προετοιμασμένος για θυσίες». Ειλικρινής και χωρίς να θέλει να κρυφτεί, παραδέχεται την «άστατη ζωή» που έκανε. «Ζω τρία χρόνια στην Αθήνα και κάθε χρόνος ήταν διαφορετικός. Τον δεύτερο χρόνο, το παραδέχομαι, έγιναν ακραία σκηνικά. Ξενύχτια, καταχρήσεις και γυναίκες αποτελούσαν μέρος των lives. Δεν είχα καν σταθερό σπίτι, τριγυρνούσα. Αλλά έκοψα γρήγορα από αυτές τις παρέες και συμμορφώθηκα». Ωμός και με θράσος, ο Saske δεν φοβάται να «τσαλακώσει» την εικόνα του. Σε ένα περιβάλλον αρκετά απαιτητικό και επικριτικό, όπως αυτό της εγχώριας μουσικής σκηνής, καταφέρνει να ξεχωρίζει για την επιμονή του στη λεπτομέρεια και την ακέραιη μουσική του ταυτότητα. Θέλει να πειραματίζεται με πολλά μουσικά είδη, να μην περιορίζεται και να δημιουργεί αυθόρμητες συνεργασίες που πραγματικά απολαμβάνει. «Εγώ θέλω την αυθεντικότητα. Στο "Το ξέρω μάνα" μιλάω με ειλικρίνεια για τη σχέση μου με τη μητέρα μου. Ο κόσμος το καταλαβαίνει και για αυτό μπορεί να ταυτιστεί. Σημαντικότερο από όλα είναι να είσαι ο εαυτός σου. Πώς μπορείς να μιλάς για πράγματα που δεν έχεις ζήσει;» Και όσο για το hate που δέχονται οι πρωτοεμφανιζόμενοι ράπερς, ο ίδιος γελώντας λέει: «Δεν δίνω λόγους να με κράξουν. Προσπαθώ να είμαι cringe-free».

Saske, a restless and driven spirit, always seems to be searching for something new. His last song “Το ξέρω μάνα” (“Mama I know”) has more than 5 million views on Youtube and the singer, also known as Odysseus, witnesses his early success and his career being fast forwarded as he enjoys every minute of his personal music Odyssey.

oving from the small town of Hrisoupoli, Kavala to Athens, he began chasing the dream of becoming a singer since he was a teen, while sending demos to labels and trying to infiltrate the music industry and meet people that would appreciate his talent in music. “You have to know what you’re looking for but also what it takes to succeed in something. I tried really hard and by the time I reached 17, many labels started showing interest in my work. Gradually, I got more popular and the hip hop scene wanted to know who I was. My work is my life, at this point. It’s entertaining but you have to dedicate time and be ready to make sacrifices”.

He is honest, talking about his unstable way of living. He doesn’t try to hide when he says “I’ve lived in Athens for three years now and each one of these years has been totally different. My second year of living here, I can admit that there were some excessive things happening. Sleeping late, drinking, interacting with women were all part of each of my live shows. I didn’t have a house to come back to and so I was always on the move. But I started distancing myself from the bad influence certain people had on me and I became myself again”. Raw and bold at the same time, Saske isn’t afraid of damaging his image.

Being a part of the local music scene can be challenging and there will be times that people will judge you harshly; but he perseveres, giving attention to every detail and managing to keep his identity as a musician intact. He tries to experiment with various music genres because he doesn’t want to feel trapped in working with only one of them. He also tries to make collaborations that he deeply enjoys. “I need to be authentic. In my song “Το ξέρω μάνα” (“Mama I know”) I talk about my relationship with my own mother. People understand it and that’s the reason they identify with my music. The most important thing is to be yourself. I don’t understand how anyone can sing about situations they’ve never experienced”. And as far as the negative comments that every rapper making his debut in the music scene receives, he says while laughing: “I try to not offer people the excuse to hate me and be as “cringeless” as possible”.

ι φανς εκτιμούν την ειλικρίνεια και την απλότητά του και ο ίδιος τους το ανταποδίδει. «Χαίρομαι πολύ όταν βλέπω τους φανς μου. Πάντα κάθομαι και τους μιλάω και δεν θα πω "όχι" σε φωτογραφία. Ειδικά στη Χρυσούπολη, τα πράγματα είναι πολύ γλυκά. Η κοινότητα με στηρίζει και αυτό το νιώθω. Δεν είναι απλώς φανς για εμένα. Είναι το σπίτι μου και αυτό το στηρίζω περήφανα». Όσο για τα κορίτσια, σίγουρα ο γυναικείος πληθυσμός δεν μένει αδιάφορος. Μπορεί η ραπ σκηνή να αναφέρεται υποτιμητικά στις γυναίκες, ο ίδιος όμως υποστηρίζει πως τις αγαπά. «Ακόμα και στα κορίτσια, επιζητάω την απλότητα. Μου αρέσουν οι γυναίκες που είναι όμορφες γιατί απλώς είναι ανεπιτήδευτες. Ξέρω πως το ραπ χρησιμοποιεί σεξιστικές εκφράσεις, είναι όμως ένα κατάλοιπο του δρόμου. Από εκεί ξεκίνησε. Εγώ τις εκτιμώ και πιστεύω στην ισότητα των φύλων, όχι στην ανωτερότητα». Ως καλλιτέχνης δεν ακολουθεί τα trends, τα παρακολουθεί, αλλά παραμένει πιστός στην προσωπική του αισθητική. «Δεν κάνω συνεργασίες και lives απλώς για να τα κάνω και αυτό το ακολουθώ σε όλες τις πτυχές της ζωής μου. Δεν μου ταιριάζει να κάνω πράγματα αποκλειστικά για τα χρήματα. Σέβομαι αυτούς που το κάνουν, αλλά εγώ θέλω να παρουσιάσω μια νέα αύρα, μια νέα στάση ζωής. Κάθε καλλιτέχνης έχει το δικό του σύμπαν και όταν έρχεσαι σε επαφή με την τέχνη του, γίνεσαι κομμάτι αυτού του σύμπαντος. Πώς μπορείς να νιώσεις, αν ο καλλιτέχνης δεν είναι αληθινός;» Ο ίδιος πιστεύει πως απαραίτητο κομμάτι της τέχνης, πέρα από την ειλικρίνεια, είναι και ο λυρισμός. Είτε στο Instagram είτε στην πραγματική ζωή, η τέχνη χρειάζεται μια ωραιοποίηση και μια μικρή υπερβολή, όχι όμως ψέματα. Συζητώντας για τα χρήματα που αποφέρει η βιομηχανία της μουσικής και το κατά πόσο όσα βλέπουμε στα social media είναι αλήθεια, ο ίδιος αναφέρει πως η βιομηχανία της μουσικής ανθίζει, χρήματα και χορηγοί υπάρχουν και αν είσαι όντως διατεθειμένος να εργαστείς σκληρά, μπορείς να ζήσεις μια άνετη ζωή μέσα από αυτό. «Και εγώ πριν μπω στον χώρο, νόμιζα πως είναι όλα ψέματα. Τελικά δεν είναι». Αυτή την περίοδο ετοιμάζει με τη δισκογραφική του, την Offbeat Records, ένα μεγάλο tour σε όλη την Ελλάδα μαζί με τους Slogan, Illeoo, Wolf και Givi ενώ παράλληλα προετοιμάζει την κυκλοφορία ενός νέου κομματιού. Η ηλικία των 20 τον βρίσκει ανάμεσα σε studio ηχογράφησης και συζητήσεις, αλλά εκείνος έχει ένα πολύ συγκεκριμένο όνειρο: «Θέλω όταν μεγαλώσω να έχω μια κανονική, ήρεμη ζωή. Τώρα δεν μπορώ να το κάνω αυτό γιατί είμαι συνεχώς στο τρέξιμο, αλλά θέλω να φτάσω στο επίπεδο που θα ζω άνετα και ήρεμα, απολαμβάνοντας τους καρπούς όσων έχω καταφέρει». Και αν τον δεις ποτέ στον δρόμο, μίλησέ του, γιατί πίσω από την αυστηρή ταμπέλα του ράπερ κρύβεται ένας cool, αυθόρμητος και καθόλου απρόσιτος καλλιτέχνης!

is fans appreciate his honest and simple stance and he tries to give back to them as much as he can. “I am extremely happy when I meet my fans. I always talk to them and we take photos together. Especially in my hometown, people are very sweet. I feel that this community really supports me. They are not just my fans; they are my home and I’m very proud of that”. The female audience seems to be interested in his music as well. Even if the rap culture offends women with derogatory comment, Saske claims that he loves them. “When it comes to girls I like them to be natural. I appreciate the effortless beauty. I know that rap lyrics can often be sexist towards women, but that’s just the street talk influence. That’s where it started from. I deeply value them and I believe in the equality of the two sexes”.

As an artist, he has stopped following the trends; of course he keeps up with them but he tries to stay true to his personal aesthetic. “I refuse to collaborate with people just for the sake of doing it, and I try to do that in every aspect of my life. I don’t like my choices to be made only with money in mind. I respect the people who do it but I want to bring a new vibe, a new way of doing things. Every artist creates his own artistic world and by working with them you become part of this artistic world. How can you do that and manage to pass the message you want to the audience if your heart isn’t in it?”. Except for honesty, Saske believes that lyricism is also a very important part of art. He believes that whether it is on Instagram or in real life, art needs to be idealized a little. He believes in hyperbole but refuses to lie in his songs. Discussing the financial aspect of the music industry and if there is truth in the glamorous life portrayed through social media, he says that the industry is blooming. There is money and people are ready to invest in your talent but you have to be willing to work hard. Then you will be able to live a very comfortable life.

“Before becoming part of the industry I believed that they were all lies. Apparently, they aren’t”.

Nowadays, he and his record label, Offbeat Records, are working on his new album. An extensive Greek tour is in store for him with Slogan, Illeoo, Wolf and Givi by his side and he is also about to release a new song. The 20-year-old singer lives between the studio, recordings and meetings but his dream is very clear: “Growing up I want to have a normal, quiet life. My work is always taking me places and I can’t do that right now, but I am dreaming of a time when I’ll live comfortably and enjoy the results of what I have worked really hard for”. And if by any chance you run into him, be sure to talk to him, because behind the tough rapper persona, you’ll find a very cool, spontaneous and approachable artist!

ELENA SYRAKA THE MODERN DESIGNER INSPIRED FROM THE PAST Ευαίσθητη, δημιουργική, θαρραλέα. Η Έλενα Σύρακα προσπαθεί, μέσα απο τις δημιουργίες της, να αποτυπώσει το δικό της, προσωπικό όραμα, ορμώμενη από την κληρονομιά του αρχαίου ελληνικού πολιτισμού. Τη συναντήσαμε με αφορμή τη νέα της έκθεση LABYRINTH στο Μουσείο Μπενάκη και μας μίλησε για αυτή την πρόκληση, τη μελέτη και τη δημιουργική διαδικασία της νέας αυτής συλλογής.

ώς προέκυψε η συνεργασία σου με το Μουσείο Μπενάκη για τη νέα σου έκθεση κοσμήματος, με τίτλο LABYRINTH; Με το Μουσείο Μπενάκη μάς συνδέει μια ξεχωριστή, ισχυρή σχέση. Η έκθεσή μου NOUR είχε πραγματοποιηθεί στο Μουσείο Ισλαμικής Τέχνης, αλλά η έκθεση κοσμήματος LABYRINTH στο Μουσείο Μπενάκη, στην Κουμπάρη, αποτελεί μια πολύ καθοριστική συνεργασία, γιατί γίνεται ένας κρίκος στην αλυσίδα ανθρωπιάς και κοινωνικής αλληλεγγύης του Μουσείου, αφού εντάσσεται στο πλαίσιο των Εκπαιδευτικών Προγραμμάτων του για ευπαθείς ομάδες συνανθρώπων μας. Η έκθεση έχει ως κεντρικό θέμα κι έμπνευση την ιστορία του Μινωικού και Μυκηναϊκού πολιτισμού. Πού ανέτρεξες για να βρεις στοιχεία για την έρευνά σου; Μελέτησα τον Μινωικό και τον Μυκηναϊκό Πολιτισμό σχεδόν τρία χρόνια. Ταξίδεψα στην Κρήτη, στην Κνωσό και στις Μυκήνες, επισκέφτηκα το Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Μυκηνών, το Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο του Ηρακλείου και το Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο στην Αθήνα. Οδηγός έμπνευσής μου τα εκθέματα των μουσείων, τα σύμβολα και ο αρχαίος ελληνικός πολιτισμός. Δούλεψα πάνω σε αυτά, κάνοντας δεκάδες σχέδια και καταλήγοντας σε αυτά που πλέον αποτελούν την έκθεση «LABYRINTH»: τριάντα τρία κοσμήματα-έργα τέχνης από χρυσό 18 καρατίων με διαμάντια, ρουμπίνια και ζαφείρια. Ποια στοιχεία του Μινωικού και Μυκηναϊκού πολιτισμού αποτέλεσαν τη βάση της έμπνευσής σου; Πώς κατάφερες να τα συνδέσεις με τη δική σου αισθητική; Η αρχική μου έμπνευση ήταν η τοιχογραφία από την αίθουσα των διπλών πελέκων, στο Ανάκτορο της Κνωσού. Η περίφημη «Μυκηναία», απίστευτη πηγή έμπνευσης. Η θεά των Όφεων, περίτεχνες λαβές από ξίφη, η κεφαλή του ταύρου, οι Σφίγγες πάνω σε ελεφάντινο κτένι. Όταν διεισδύω σε βάθος, μετά από μελέτη, κάνοντας τα σχέδια, αφήνω ένα χρονικό περιθώριο πριν την υλοποίησή τους, να τα επανεξετάσω και να τα αφουγκραστώ, τολμώ να κάνω αλλαγές χωρίς να φοβάμαι ότι αυτές μπορεί να με πάνε σε αδιέξοδο. Μόνο τότε, εκφράζομαι και αποτυπώνονται στο αντικείμενο η αισθητική και η προσωπικότητά μου. Τι υλικά χρησιμοποίησες για τη δημιουργία των κοσμημάτων σου; Υπάρχει κάποιο το οποίο χειρίστηκες για πρώτη φορά; Πάντα δουλεύω χρυσό, 18 καράτια και τις περισσότερες φορές διαμάντια λευκά και μαύρα. Στην έκθεση «LABYRINTH» πρόσθεσα ρουμπίνια και ζαφείρια. Με τα ρουμπίνια, κυρίως, ήθελα να αποτυπώσω τη δύναμη των χρωμάτων, των συναισθημάτων που μας δημιουργεί η Κνωσός.

Sensitive, creative and bold, Elena Syraka tries to capture her personal vision, a vision inspired by the ancient Greek heritage, into her own creations. We met her to talk about her new exhibition, LABYRINTH, that takes place at Benaki Museum and she tells us all about this challenge, and how the research and the creative process of this exhibition have been for her.

H

ow did this collaboration with Benaki Museum for your new jewellery collection, named LABYRINTH, happened?

We’ve always had a very special and strong bond with the Benaki Museum. My previous exhibition, NOUR, was held at the Museum of Islamic Art, but LABYRINTH, that is taking place at Benaki Museum, in Koubari Street is a very pivotal collaboration. The reason for that is that the museum creates links between humanity and social solidarity, since it is held under the auspices of the Educational Programmes for the vulnerable groups of people in our society.

The exhibition is mainly inspired by the Mycenaean and Minoan civilizations, from which you also drew inspiration.

Where did you trace the appropriate material while you were researching for your exhibition?

I had been studying the Mycenaean and Minoan history for around three years. I travelled to Crete, Knossos and Mycenae and I visited the Mycenae Archaeological Museum, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum and the National Archaeological Museum of Athens as well. The Museum exhibits, symbols and the Ancient Greek civilization have been my source of inspiration and have also been guiding me through this process. I based my designs on what I had learned about these civilizations and I worked on them extensively in order to create the “LABYRINTH” exhibition consisting of thirty-three art pieces made from 18-karat gold, diamonds, rubies and sapphires.

Which elements of the Mycenaean and Minoan civilizations were vital for the inspiration of your collection? How did you manage to merge these elements with your own aesthetic?

Initially, I was inspired by a mural painted at the double-headed axe hall, of the Knossos Palace. Of course the famous mule of the Mycenaean woman, “Mykinea”, was also a great source of inspiration. As well as the “Snake Goddess”, ornate hilts of swords, the Minoan Taurus’s head, and the sphinx figures engraved on an elephantine hair comb. Usually I finish with my research and then I dive into the designing process. I try to leave a certain amount of time pass by before continuing with the implementation, because I want to be able to review and listen to my creation speak to me. I want to be free to make changes without the fear of maybe being led to a dead-end. Only then I can express myself, and my personality and aesthetic can be reflected in my creations.

What materials did you use to make your jewellery? Is there a new material that you tried to induct to your creations?

I always work with 18-Karat gold and mostly white and gold diamonds.At my “LABYRINTH” collection I added rubies and sapphires. By using the rubies especially, I wanted to capture what a vibrant and powerful feeling colours and Knossos itself can have on us.

Απολαμβάνω και θεωρώ πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα τη διαδικασία αποτύπωσης της έμπνευσής μου, που προέρχεται από το συγκεκριμένο θέμα. Πηγή έμπνευσης για τα κοσμήματά μου διαχρονικά είναι ο αρχαίος ελληνικός πολιτισμός. Αυτή η απίστευτη κληρονομιά που έχουμε με αυτή την ιδιαίτερη αισθητική! Όταν αναλογιστείς πόσους αιώνες πριν δημιουργούσαν αριστουργήματα, απλώς υποκλίνεσαι, εμπνέεσαι, δημιουργείς!

as it harder for you to creatively approach the specific theme of this exhibition? What does usually inspire you in order to create a jewellery piece?

To be honest, I saw it more as an artistic challenge rather than a difficulty. I find it really interesting and enjoyable to be able to watch how my inspiration from this certain theme is reflected in my work. Throughout the years, I have always drawn inspiration from the Ancient Greek civilization, our incredible heritage that has such a unique aesthetic!
