> Back to life. Κλείνω την πόρτα πίσω μου, οι δρόμοι είναι άδειοι. Ξημερώματα μια Τετάρτης στα τέλη του καλοκαιριού η ερημωμένη πόλη μοιάζει πιο γαλήνια και από τον ουρανό της. Ακούω το μαρσάρισμα ενός αυτοκινήτου, ταξί, το σταματάω. Καλησπέρα σας κύριε, πού πηγαίνετε; Απαντώ και την παρατηρώ. Μια μορφή κινηματογραφική, κόκκινα μακριά νύχια, χρυσές καδένες και βραχιόλια στους καρπούς, άσπρο λινό πουκάμισο, περασμένα πενήντα. Το σώμα της είναι λυγερό και ξεσπάει σε μικρές νευρικές κινήσεις με κορύφωση το απαλό δήθεν φτιάξιμο των ξανθών μαλλιών της και το ανάλαφρο τίναγμα τους προς τα πίσω. Το τιμόνι πηγαίνει αριστερά δεξιά κολλημένο σχεδόν στο στήθος της, χαϊδεύει ξανά τα καλοχτενισμένα μαλλιά της και σε κάθε φανάρι προτάσσει τον μισό εαυτό της έξω από το παράθυρο περιμένοντας το πράσινο. Το ραδιόφωνο παίζει τζαζ και το αεράκι της πόλης έχει δροσίσει. Φτάσαμε πιο σύντομα απ’ ό,τι επιθυμούσα, αυτό θυμάμαι σήμερα - δυο εβδομάδες μετά από εκείνη τη νύχτα. Της έδωσα έξι ευρώ, με ευχαρίστησε ευγενικά, έκλεισα την πόρτα πίσω μου. Και κάπως έτσι επέστρεψα στην πόλη.

I shut the door behind me, the streets are empty. Early hours on a late summer Wednesday, the deserted city appears more serene than the sky above.

I hear a car approaching, a taxi, it stops. ‘Good evening sir, where to?’. I reply and begin observing her. A character out of a film, with long red nails, golden chains, bracelets on the wrists, white linen shirt, past fifty. Her supple figure breaks into nervous small movements culminating in her subtle fixing of her blond hair and a delicate shake towards the back. Her steering wheel stuck close to her chest moves from left to right while she once again caresses her perfectly groomed hair and while waiting for the green light, she projects half her body outside the window. Jazz music is coming from the radio and a cool breeze has taken hold of the city. We arrived faster than I anticipated, that is all I can recall today - two weeks after that night. I handed her six euros, she thanked me politely, I shut the door. And just like that I came back to the city.

Κοιτάμε ένα ποτήρι. Είμαστε καθισμένοι στην καφετέρια που πηγαίνουμε κάθε μέρα τον τελευταίο μήνα και κοιτάζουμε ένα ποτήρι. Αρκετά λεπτά πριν ένας από εμάς είχε αναρωτηθεί γιατί κάποια στιγμή αποφασίσαμε όλοι μαζί ότι το ποτήρι είναι ποτήρι και δεν είναι καπέλο. Μία ερώτηση κάπως απλοϊκή, αφού είναι ξεκάθαρο το γεγονός ότι ένα ποτήρι δε θα ήταν καθόλου βολικό ως καπέλο και προφανώς εκείνος που το κατάλαβε πρώτος αυτό το είπε και στην υπόλοιπη ανθρωπότητα, αλλά είναι τέλος καλοκαιριού και δεν μας πειράζει καθόλου να περνάμε το χρόνο μας κοιτάζοντας το κενό. Η πραγματικότητα έρχεται κάθε φορά που πίνουμε και φεύγει κάθε φορά που κοιτάζουμε. Στροβιλιζόμαστε έχοντας ένα ποτήρι στο κέντρο. Εκείνος που ρώτησε συνεχίζει να μιλάει και μετά από έναν ατελείωτο μονόλογο καταλήγει πως η υποκειμενικότητα σαν έννοια είναι το ίδιο άτοπη με την αντικειμενικότητα και ένας άλλος, που αντικειμενικά είναι πιο έξυπνος από όλους όσους κάθονται στο τραπέζι, λέει πως κανονικά θα είχε πάει σπίτι του εδώ και ώρες, αλλά μένει στον τρίτο όροφο και αυτό είναι κάπως αποτρεπτικό. Μιλάμε για το νόημα και την απουσία του και καταλήγουμε στο συμπέρασμα πως εκείνο που μας λείπει είναι ένας κοινός ορισμός. Για να μιλήσουμε δηλαδή για οτιδήποτε, πρέπει πρώτα να συμφωνήσουμε για τι ακριβώς μιλάμε. Επιστροφή στα βασικά. Είμαστε όμως μεγάλη παρέα και μέχρι να ορίσει ο καθένας τι εννοεί ως πραγματικότητα μπορεί και να τελειώσει το βράδυ. Έτσι κι αλλιώς εμείς δε μπορούμε να συμφωνήσουμε καν για το ποτήρι που έχουμε μπροστά μας. Ο διάλογος σταμάτα. Μένουμε να κοιτάμε την πραγματικότητα να εξαφανίζεται και το φθινόπωρο κάποιοι από εμάς επιστρέφοντας θα φοράμε ποτήρια.

Sat in our usual cafe, starring at a glass. This is the same cafe we go to every day for the past month and now all of us are just starring at a glass. Several minutes passed since someone had thought aloud on the reason why at some certain point in time it was decided that a glass was a actually glass and not a hat. A simplistic question since, obviously, a glass wouldn’t make half a hat and the first person to realise it made the honors to inform the rest of the humanity about it and in any case it is the end of the summer and it’s alright to spend time starring at nothing. Reality comes in every drink and then it goes each time we stare, revolving around a glass. The one who dropped the question keeps on an endless monologue that ends up concluding on subjectivity being as irrelevant as objectivity. And right then, the one who is objectively cleverer than the rest, admits that he should have been gone for hours but his flat is inconveniently on the third floor. We talk about the meaning and the absence only to end up that what we are really missing is a common definition; we first need to agree on the subject and then do the talking. Back to basics therefore. We are such a large group of people though and it will take for ever for each and every one of us to state their own take on reality. Besides, we can’t even agree on the glass we stare at. Our conversation naturally comes to an end. We stay still, looking at reality disappearing to the imminent autumn, a time when some of us will be wearing glasses.

Coming back is always hard. It inevitably means coming back to something known, something familiar from which one either wanted or had to depart. However returning is not necessarily unpleasant or bad. At least the return of Soul II Soul was marked in great success as well as a Grammy award.

Soul II Soul were formed in London by Jazzie B. towards the end of the 80’s. The year of 1989 was marked with their greatest success ever, ‘Back to Life’ or as is widely known: ‘However do you want me’. Soul II Soul was a platform for many different artists such as Simon Law, Daddae, Nellee Hooper, Rose Windross, Doreen Waddell, Lamya and Melissa Bell, as well as Caron Wheeler. Some of them left, some found tragic death, some got into fights and others stayed till the end with Jazzie B. Notably Caron Wheeler starred not only in that song but also in the group’s second biggest hit ‘Keep on Movin’. Their curriculum, includes individual collaborations with Sinead O ‘Connor, Fine Young Cannibals, Neneh Cherry and many more. It seems that the project under the name Soul II Soul was a break from their routine. September is back and so are we once again, ready as we should be, just like we want to be, without compromises. Sometimes returning is as desirable as a new beginning. A friend once said that returning is like a re-heated meal; it has something from the past, you can still eat it and it can often taste even better. Soul II Souls are coming back with the same songs -looking aged and different than what we remember them. However, their come back has nothing to do with a new beginning but with a need for reviving some past glory... ou

Οι Soul II Soul ιδρύθηκαν από τον Jazzie B. στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 80 στο Λονδίνο. Το 1989 σηματοδοτήθηκε με τη μεγαλύτερη επιτυχία που έκαναν ποτέ, το ‘Back to Life’, ή αλλιώς γνωστό και ως ‘However do you want me’. Από τους Soul II Soul πέρασαν πολλοί όπως οι Simon Law, Daddae, Nellee Hooper, Rose Windross, Doreen Waddell, Lamya και Melissa Bell αλλά και η Caron Wheeler. Κάποιοι αποχώρησαν, κάποιοι απεβίωσαν με τραγικό τρόπο, κάποιοι τσακώθηκαν και κάποιοι παρέμειναν εκεί με τον Jazzie B. Ιδίως η Wheeler πρωταγωνίστησε φωνητικά, όχι μόνο στο προαναφερόμενο τραγούδι, αλλά και στο ‘Keep on Movin’, τη δεύτερη μεγάλη επιτυχία του συγκροτήματος. Στο βιογραφικό τους συμπεριλαμβάνονται ατομικές συνεργασίες με τους Sinead O’ Connor, Fine Young Cannibals, Neneh Cherry και πολλούς άλλους. Φαίνεται πως το ‘εγχείρημα’ με την ονομασία Soul II Soul ήταν το δικό τους διάλειμμα από την καθημερινότητά. Ο Σεπτέμβρης είναι εδώ κι εδώ είμαστε όλοι ξανά, όπως πρέπει να είμαστε, όπως θέλουμε να είμαστε, χωρίς συμβιβασμούς. Καμιά φορά η επιστροφή είναι τόσο επιθυμητή όσο και μια νέα αρχή. Ένας φίλος μου είχε πει ότι η επιστροφή είναι σαν το ξαναζεσταμένο φαγητό, έχει κάτι από το παρελθόν, από το χθες, αλλά αυτό δεν σημαίνει ότι δεν ‘τρώγεται’ και μερικές φορές είναι και πιο νόστιμη. Οι Soul II Soul επανέρχονται μετά από χρόνια με τα ίδια τραγούδια –γερασμένοι & διαφορετικοί- όχι έτσι όπως τους θυμόμαστε, όχι έτσι όπως θα τους θέλαμε. H δική τους επανεμφάνιση δεν έχει να κάνει με μια νέα αρχή όμως, αλλά με την ανάγκη για λίγη από την αίγλη του παρελθόντος…

Και αφού σταμάτησε να συλλέγει κάρτες του μπέιζμπολ, κάπου εκεί στη σταυροφορία του για ένα ατελείωτο καλοκαίρι, ο 23χρονος slacker δημιούργησε το δικό του ‘Dookie’. Στην επιστροφή του λοιπόν μετά από μια δύσκολη χρονιά, ο Nathan Williams φοράει το καλύτερο καλιφορνέζικο του κοστούμι και επιστρατεύοντας την μπάντα του αδικοχαμένου Jay Reatard, αγκαλιάζει το skate punk του Orange County μαζί με το surf pop των Beach Boys και μέσα σε νεκρό χρόνο ο supergeek που ηχογραφούσε στο σπίτι των γονιών του, κλεισμένος σε τέσσερις αφισοκολλημένους τοίχους, μεταμορφώνεται σε βασιλιάς της παραλίας. Ο ήλιος καίει περισσότερο από ποτέ, τα αγόρια περιμένουν πάνω στα longboards το κατάλληλο κύμα και ενώ όλα δείχνουν τόσο νοσταλγικά, η εικόνα είναι full HD. Ali Love Στην ερώτηση: ‘Ποιος είναι τέλος πάντων αυτός ο Ali Love;’, η απάντηση που ακολουθούσε ήταν συνήθως : ‘Έλα μωρέ, δε θυμάσαι; Αυτός που είχε κάνει τα φωνητικά στο Do it again των Chemical Brothers πριν κάποια χρόνια’. .. Δεν είναι ότι ο Ali δεν απασχόλησε τη μουσική βιομηχανία έκτοτε. To single του ‘Secret Sunday Lover’ έκανε κάποιο θόρυβο το 2007, ενώ αργότερα έμπλεξε σε διαμάχες με την πρώην εταιρία του, την Columbia, με συνέπεια το ήδη ηχογραφημένο του πρώτο album ‘Love Music’ να μην κυκλοφορήσει ποτέ. Παρά τις προσπάθειες του Ali, το ‘Do it again’ εξακολουθούσε να είναι το magnum opus του, από εμπορικής απόψεως τουλάχιστον. Φαίνεται πως αυτές οι μέρες έφτασαν στο τέλος τους, μιας και ο αδύνατος Λονδρέζος μοιάζει επιτέλους έτοιμος να κάνει το προσωπικό του solo breakthrough.

To πρώτο του προσωπικό άλμπουμ ‘Love Harder’ κυκλοφόρησε στις 9 Αυγούστου. Οι πρώτες φήμες σχετικά με την ποιότητα του προς κυκλοφορία υλικού, μήνες πριν, μιλούσαν για ένα σπουδαίο άλμπουμ, το οποίο στο πρώτο άκουσμα φαίνεται πως έφερε το επιθυμητό αποτέλεσμα που ήθελε ο Ali και οι συνεργάτες μου. Ποιο είναι αυτό: pop μουσική με στοιχεία dance (house, disco). Σκέψου Roisin Murphy σε αρσενικό και πιο underground. Με ενδιαφέρον αναμένονται φέτος τα live του Ali, επ’ ευκαιρίας του νέου άλμπουμ. Ο Ali, είχε κάνει όνομα στην λονδρέζικη clubbing σκηνή με τις εμφανίσεις του με τον dj Luca C, όπου ο Love διακοσμούσε με τα live φωνητικά του τους disco και house δίσκους που έπαιζε από τα decks ο Luca Cazals. Σίγουρα, οι εμφανίσεις του με νέο live set up, βασισμένες στην πληθωρική του παρουσία, θα είναι από τα ‘must see’ της σεζόν αυτής.

The answer to the question ‘So who is this Ali Love?’ was usually ‘Come on, can’t you remember? The one doing vocals on Do it again by the Chemical Brothers a few years ago.’ It’s not as if Ali had quit music industry ever since.

He actually managed to make some noise for himself in 2007 with his single ‘Secret Sunday Lover’ but later on he went into trouble with his former company, Columbia. This resulted in cancelling the release of his first recorded album ‘Love Music’. Despite his efforts, ‘Do it again’ was still his magnus opus, at least on the commercial side. However, it looks like those days are over since the skinny Londoner is ready for his solo breakthrough; his first personal album ‘Love Harder’ was released on August 9. A few months before that, first reactions regarding the album mentioned a great work which at first listening brought the desired result for Ali and his team. And what would that be? Pop music infused with dance elements (house, disco). Think of a more underground, male Roisin Murphy.

Ali’s live appearances, on the occasion of the new album, are expected with wide interest. Previously, Ali had made a name for himself in London’s club scene, appearing together with dj Luca C. During their lives, Ali’s back vocals supported the disco and house tracks from Luca Cazals’ decks. This time there is no doubt that his new live set up will be large, just like his presence, making it one of the season’s must see.

Και αυτό που ζουν είναι πέρα για πέρα αληθινό. Η κρίση που περνούν ως ζευγάρι είναι η κρίση κάθε παντρεμένου ζευγαριού που βρίσκεται αντιμέτωπο με μια τόσο μεγάλη στιγμή στη ζωή του. Η κρίση που περνούν ως γονείς είναι η κρίση κάθε γονιού απέναντι στην ‘επανάσταση’ των έφηβων παιδιών τους. Οι απογοητεύσεις, οι εκρήξεις τους, οι μηχανισμοί άμυνας και επίθεσης είναι κοινοί, ανεξάρτητα από σεξουαλικούς προσανατολισμούς και κοινωνικές συμβάσεις. Με όπλο της ένα υποδειγματικό σενάριο, δύο θαρραλέες ερμηνείες από την Annette Bening (Νικ) και την Julianne Moore (Τζουλς) και μια συσσωρευμένη σοφία που μοιάζει να προέρχεται από την βαθιά γνώση της γυναικείας ψυχολογίας, η Cholodenko (αναζητήστε οπωσδήποτε τις δύο προηγούμενες ταινίες της ‘High Art’/1998 και ‘Laurel Canyon’/2002) αποδεικνύει με αυτήν την σπουδαία ταινία ποιος είναι ο σωστός τρόπος να κάνεις πολιτικό mainstream σινεμά για όλην την οικογένεια. With just a phase difference from the burning world-wide political question on the legitimacy for same-sex marriage, at the point where cinema can and should be ahead of real life, Nic and Jules are living as a married couple with two kids. This is our first image of them: parents of a ‘typical’ American family in Los Angeles. Nic is a doctor and, in an attempt to match with traditional models, the ‘father’ of the family. Jules stays at home, works occasionally as a garden decorator fulfilling the model of the modern mother. All goes smoothly until the day their fifteen year old son persuades his about to go to college older sister, to search for their birth father.The rest of the story is far from exceptional. What follows is another film that deals with the fragility of marriage, the problematic relationship between adults and teenagers, a family in crisis. The big difference is that the director has full knowledge of the political burden she bears without diverting from the rules of comedy. By avoiding an overly serious melodrama or activist statements, Cholodenko tells the story in a lighthearted mood, without being triggered by the paradoxical relationship of the heroines. Instead she remains sensitively loyal to the truth.

Nic and Jules are two archetypal parents just as their story is the archetypal story of a family. And it is precisely at this point, where ‘The Kids Are All Right’ sets a decisive moment in film history, both for the American and world cinema as well as the queer movement and its rights. Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain (the immediately preceding American mainstream film of such gravity) dealt with an unfulfilled love between two men and their secretive relationship. On the contrary Cholodenko’s heroines are as incontrovertible as the next door mother and father. The lives they are living are utterly real. Their crisis as a couple is a typical crisis of every married couple facing a crucial moment. Their critical point as parents is again typical against their teenage kids’ rebellion.

All disappointments, explosions, the ways of defending and attacking are common regardless of sexual orientations and social conventions.Armed with an exemplary scenario, two brave performances from Annette Bening (Nic) and Julianne Moore (Jules) and an accumulated wisdom coming from a profound understanding of female psychology, Cholodenko (her two previous films are highly recommended: ‘High Art’/1998 και ‘Laurel Canyon’/2002) demonstrates through this great film the best way of making political mainstream cinema for all the family. That as well as how easy it sometimes is, to change the world.

Lucas Mexis is an extremely busy 27-year-old. From being the editor of yupi.gr and being involved in the ‘Chartinos Kosmos’ group -a digital comic updated every Monday to being a member of the party organising team ‘Yes it does ! Sure it does!!’ responsible for some great parties around Athens and his latest venture: his first novel SHOEBOX [a summer scam] published last June.

Πώς είναι να κάνεις την πρώτη σου λογοτεχνική έκδοση μόλις στα 26; Είναι κάτι που με αγχώνει αλλά από την άλλη με έκανε να πω επιτέλους, γιατί ήταν έτοιμο πολλά χρόνια πριν και περίμενε την ώρα του. Δεν ήταν εύκολο, γιατί γραφόταν ενώ ήμουν στα 20- και τότε δεν έχεις ιδέα τι σου γίνεται, όποτε φαντάσου πόσο δύσκολο είναι να βάζεις σε τάξη τόσο την σκέψη σου όσο και το γράψιμο σου. Κοίτα, το ονειρευόμουν από μικρό παιδί, απλά τώρα ήταν η κατάλληλη στιγμή να γίνει και πραγματικότητα. Πώς επέλεξες τη συγκεκριμένη ιστορία που διηγείσαι στο Shoebοx; Είναι καθαρά βιώματα μου που χαρακτηρίζουν μια περίοδο της ζωής μου, τα οποία βρήκα τον τρόπο να τα ενώσω με φανταστικό τρόπο. Οκ, στην πραγματικότητα δεν υπήρχαν ίσως τόσο extreme καταστάσεις, αλλά όλα είναι κάπου εκεί: η Αμοργός, οι πίνακες ζωγραφικής, οι αναρχικοί παραθεριστές και προφανώς ο αγχωμένος αλλά συμπαθής (φαντάζομαι) πρωταγωνιστής. Τι θυσίες χρειάστηκαν για το καταφέρεις αυτό; Πόσο δύσκολο ήταν να μένεις μέσα τα βράδια που οι άλλοι διασκέδαζαν; Ήταν, και είναι. Για μια περίοδο τεσσάρων μηνών θυμάμαι ότι δεν έκανα τίποτα άλλο παρά ξύπναγα και έγραφα, έτρωγα, διόρθωνα… Το Shoebox το ξαναδιάβασα και διόρθωσα μέσα σε μια περίοδο τριών ετών γύρω στις έξη φορές. Έπηξε το κεφάλι μου, είχα αρχίσει να μισώ τις σελίδες, να με κουράζει, αλλά έπρεπε να το υποστώ γιατί αν όχι εγώ, ποιος; Ποιες είναι οι πρώτες σου εντυπώσεις από το χώρο των εκδόσεων; Στην αρχή απογοητεύτηκα τόσο από τις ασαφείς απορρίψεις όσο και από την βραδύτητα του χώρου να δώσει ευκαιρίες σε νέους- κάτι που ακούς όμως και στο χώρο της μουσικής, της μόδας, παντού. Γενικά οι έλληνες έχουμε αυτό το κόμπλεξ να φοβόμαστε το καινούργιο, αλλά παράλληλα να αναλωνόμαστε στο ξεπερασμένο. Άκουσα ένα κάρο δικαιολογίες, οι περισσότερες έπεσαν μέσα στην απαρχή της κρίσης, άλλες στο ύφος γραψίματος. Εντέλει όμως καταλαβαίνεις ότι αν επιμείνεις και πιστεύεις σε αυτό που δημιούργησες, κάποιος θα το αναγνωρίσει. Θυμάμαι όταν άκουγα την κριτική του εκδότη, έπαθα σοκ που επιτέλους κάποιος τρίτος έλεγε αυτά που πέντε χρόνια περίμενα να ακούσω (δεν το είχα δώσει σε κανέναν άλλο να το διαβάσει προηγουμένως, ούτε φίλο, γιατί μάλλον φοβόμουν).

How does it feel having published a novel at just 26?

It is something that makes me feel nervous as well as relieved since the story was ready for a long time and was just waiting for the right time to be published.

Overall it hasn’t been easy. I started writing it in my 20s and at an age when you have no idea what your doing so your thoughts and writing are a complete mess. Look, I have been dreaming this since I was a child and the right time came to make it reality.

What made you came up with the story for Shoebox?

It is based on autobiographical experiences following a certain period of my life connected together with fiction. OK, in reality there were perhaps less extreme situations however everything is somewhere there: Amorgos, the paintings, the anarchist tourists and obviously the nervous but (hopefully) likeable protagonist.

Were there any sacrifices involved? How hard was it to stay focused working at night while others were having fun outside?

It was and it still is. During a four month period I did nothing else than waking up, writing, eating, editing… During a three year period, I re-read and edited Shoebox at about six times. My head was full, I would start hating the pages, feeling tired but I had to go through it, if not myself then who else?

What are your first impressions from the world of publishing?

At first I felt disappointed with the vague rejections as well as the refusal to give opportunities to young people -something which is also true in the world of music, fashion, everywhere. In general us Greeks are processed by this complex fear of anything new and at the same time we surrender ourselves to what is dated. I had numerous excuses, most of them related to the crisis, some of them concerning my writing style. In the end I realised that if you insist and you truly believe in what you have produced then someone will recognise it. I remember that when I heard the publisher’s view I was shocked that at last someone was uttering the things I had waited to hear for five years (no one had read it previously, not even a friend, since I guess I was afraid).

Σύντομα ο μινιμαλισμός έγινε βασικό γνώρισμα της αισθητικής του καταλήγοντας στη δημιουργία λιτών και γοητευτικών αρχιτεκτονικών σχεδίων, απορρίπτοντας το περιττό, αναδεικνύοντας την ακρίβεια. Κλήθηκε να δημιουργήσει το γνωστό flagship store της Calvin Klein στη Νέα Υόρκη καθώς και πολλά άλλα πρότζεκτ διεθνώς καταλήγοντας σε εξεζητημένους πελάτες όπως ο Karl Lagerfeld, ο συγγραφέας Bruce Chatwin, ο σκηνοθέτης όπερας Pierre Audi και ο συλλέκτης Doris Lockhart Saatchi. Το Design Museum του Λονδίνου παρουσιάζει την καριέρα του αρχιτέκτονα με μία επιλογή από τα εντυπωσιακά του έργα. John Pawson was born in Yorkshire but at some point in his life he decided to move in Japan and live the country’s culture. He quickly became a supporter of minimalism producing elegant and simplistic architectural designs, trimming down the excess while highlighting the precision. He was appointed to commit the renowned flagship store of Calvin Klein in New York and several other projects worldwide resulting in a prestigious clientele including Karl Lagerfeld, the writer Bruce Chatwin, the opera director Pierre Audi and the collector Doris Lockhart Saatchi.

The Design Museum of London showcases the architect’s career exhibiting a selection of his impressive work. The museum creates for the first time a 1:1 scale architectural installation demonstrating lively his vision and applies all possible media to transmit Pawson’s aesthetics; large scale photography, film, study models, sketches, interviews and actual pieces of wood, bronze and metal from his creations.

Από τις 7 έως τις 9 Ιουλίου το ΟΖΟΝ συμμετείχε για άλλη μια χρονιά στην διεθνή έκθεση Bread & Butter (ΒΒΒ) στο Βερολίνο με το δικό του booth ως αποκλειστικός συνεργάτης των ελληνικών μέσων μαζικής ενημέρωσης με τη ΒΒΒ. Οι φίλοι και οι επισκέπτες του OZON booth είχαν την ευκαιρία να ξεφυλλίσουν την ειδική biannual έκδοση OZON International ‘The Creative Chaos Issue’, που έχει αποκτήσει διεθνή διανομή και να πρωταγωνιστήσουν στο ‘εξώφυλλο’ του περιοδικού.

From 7 to 9th of July, OZON partcipated, once more, at the international fashion trade show Bread & Butter (BBB) in Berlin.

Having its own booth, and being an exclusive collaborator of the Greek media, OZON is the one and only magazine with its headquarters in Greece, that always attends the event. OZON’s booth friends and visitors had the opportunity to leaf through the special biannual edition of OZON International ‘The Creative Chaos Issue’, that now has international distribution, and to figure at the magazine’s cover.

Πρώτη ημέρα στο χώρο της έκθεσης στο αεροδρόμιο Tempelhof και βλέποντας το πρόγραμμα της φετινής διοργάνωσης αναρωτιόμαστε πόσα πράγματα μπορεί να κάνει κανείς μέσα σε τρεις μέρες. Ξεκινάμε με τις εκθέσεις Denim Base, sport και street-wear. Στο booth της Levi’s κύρια έμπνευση είναι το ‘California dreaming’. Ρούχα χαρούμενα, σε χρώματα γλυκά και η Levi’s μας κάνει να ονειρευόμαστε μια παραλία, φορώντας ξεβαμμένα denim. Patterns με λουλούδια και στυλ θηλυκό από την Fornarina η οποία στο booth της φιλοξενεί μοντέλα που ποζάρουν σαν pin-up girls και ‘προκαλούν’ τους επισκέπτες. Στη Miss Sixty βλέπουμε μια εξαιρετικά ολοκληρωμένη denim πρόταση και θέλουμε να αποκτήσουμε το μοντέλο moto zip shot με τις δερμάτινες λεπτομέριες. Το μουντιάλ τρυπώνει και εδώ, όπως φαίνεται και από τον τίτλο της έκθεσης ‘Premier League’ και το ‘ζέσταμα’ πριν τον δεύτερο ημιτελικό έχει αναλάβει ο Reggae μουσικός Patrice Bart-Williams. Συνεχίζουμε την εξόρμησή μας στα booths. Το περίπτερο της Diesel είναι εμπνευσμένο από τον κόσμο του σινεμά, η είσοδος είναι φτιαγμένη από κασέτες VHS και όλος ο χώρος θυμιζει κινηματογραφικό studio. Στο booth της Calvin Klein επικρατεί το ξύλο και η μίνιμαλ αισθητική, ενώ τα τζιν συνδυάζονται με ενδιαφέροντα αξεσουάρ. Γιγαντο- οθόνες, δυνατή μουσική και το μιλιταιρ look κυριαρχεί. Στο booth της Ben Sherman έχουμε την επιστροφή του preppy look και του casual chic αλλά και παρουσίαση της καινούριας σειρας ρούχων ‘modern classics’, η οποία είναι εμπνευσμένη απο την ιστιοπλοΐα.

Το περίπτερο της Harley Davidson παρουσιάζει την καινούρια συλλογή.

T-shirts εμπνευσμένα από το θρυλικό brand και δυναμική διάθεση. Στη WeSC γίνεται για πρώτη φορά παρουσίαση footwear η οποία καλύπτει όλη τη γκάμα από sneakers σε casual.

To booth της Converse All Star αποτελεί μια από τις πιο δημιουργικές προτάσεις της έκθεσης καθώς είναι εξολοκλήρου φτιαγμένο από ‘σταράκια’ σε όλα τα σχέδια και χρώματα και είναι αδύνατό να μην ονειροπολήσεις κοιτάζοντας τον πολύχρωμο τοίχο. Λίγο πιο κάτω στο stand της Lacoste η νέα σειρά Lacoste LIVE! μας εντυπωσιάζει με ένα συναρπαστικό πάντρεμα έντονων χρωμάτων και ενός εξελιγμένου design, πάντα στα πρότυπα της Lacoste. Φυσικά δεν μπορούμε να αντισταθούμε σε μια γρήγορη παρτίδα στο υπερμεγέθες ποδοσφαιράκι του περιπτέρου. Η Onitsuka Tiger - Asics που έχει παρουσία τόσο στην Bread and Butter όσο και στην πιο streetwear έκθεση Bright, μας αφήνει τις καλύτερες εντυπώσεις με την έκθεση ‘Friends and Family’, για την οποία συνεργάστηκε με brands, σχεδιαστές και καταστήματα sneakers από όλο τον κόσμο.

It’s night time μετά το τέλος του ημιτελικού ματς μεταξύ Γερμανίας και Ισπανίας και βρισκόμαστε στο γνωστό night-spot Stadbad. Με αφορμή την κυκλοφορία της νέας σειράς sneakers της, η Lacoste Legends διοργανώνει ένα πάρτι για να γιορτάσει τη συνεργασία με τους: Tim Hamilton, ato, Sebastien Tellier, Sneaker Freaker magazine, i-D magazine και άλλους. Περνάμε το βράδυ ανάμεσα σε ποτά sneakers και γινόμαστε φίλοι με την ομάδα του Λονδρέζικου περιοδικού SUPER-SUPER. Πίσω στην έκθεση οι φίλοι του περιοδικού φωτογραφίζονται κρατώντας αντικείμενα εμπνευσμένα από τα τραγούδια που έχουν συνοδεύσει τα τεύχη μας. Ζαχαρωτά για το ‘All that she wants’, νεροπίστολα για το ‘Oops I did it again’ και ένα t-shirt με καρικατούρα του Bowie για το ‘Heroes’ και ξέρουμε πως την ερχόμενη σεζόν ενώ στην Bread and Butter θα βλέπουμε τις καλοκαιρινές συλλογές, έξω η θερμοκρασία θα έχει πέσει στους -20.

First day at the exhibition at Tempelhof airport, and just seeing this year’s program, we wonder how many things one can see in only three days. We start with the jeans exhibition, sports and street-wear. At Levi’s Booth, the main inspiration is ‘California dreaming’. Optimistic garments with candy shop colors, Levi’s booth made us dream of going to the beach dressed in faded denim.

Flowery patterns and feminine style by Fornarina, whose booth had models posing, like pin-up girls, teasing the visitors. At Miss Sixty we see a complete denim proposition and we want the moto zip model with the leather details.

By the exhibition’s title, ‘Premiere League’, we understand that Mundial has sneaked here too while before the second semi-final Reggae musician, Patrice Bart-Williams is performing.

We continue our dash. Diesel’s spectacular booth is inspired from the world of motion pictures. Entrance is entirely made of stacked VHS tapes and the whole area reminds of cinematic studio. In Calvin Klein’s booth, jeans are combined with interesting accesories, in wooden scenery with minimal taste. What follows is the booth of Staf Jeans & Co., 170 cm long, at the level Denim Base of Bread & Butter. The new collection is mainly consisted of T-shirts, colored jeans, slim fit and baggy denims, following the brand’s main message: ‘Do your Staff’.

We run to catch the G-Star RAW fashion show. Big screens, loud music and the military look is on. In Ben Sherman’s booth we see the return of preppy look and casual chic but also presentation of a new line called ‘modern classics’, which is inspired by sailing.

Harley Davidson presented its new collection. A wide range of T-shirts, inspired by the legendary brand. WeSC showed their debut footwear, covering a whole range from sneakers to casual.

Converse All Star’s booth is one of the most creative, since it is completely made of all-stars in every shape and color, that makes it difficult to not daydream

by just looking at the colorfull wall.

Onitsuka Tiger, which has participated in both Bread & Butter and Bright, is giving us the best impressions with its exhibition ‘Friends and Family’, for which it collaborated with brands, designers and sneakers shops from all over the world.

After the semi-final between Spain and Germany, it’s night time and there we are at the famous night-spot Stadbad. Lacoste Legends is organising a party to celebrate the collaborations with: Tim Hamilton, ato, Sebastien Tellier, Sneaker Freaker magazine, i-D magazine and others, for its new sneakers line. We spend the night between booze sneakers and we become friends with SUPERSUPER magazine’s team.

Back in the exhibition, our friends are being photographed holding props inspired by songs that have inspired our previous issues. Candies for ‘All That She Wants’, water-guns for ‘Oops I Did It Again’, and a T-shirt with David Bowie’s caricature for ‘Heroes’ and we know that in the next season’s Bread & Butter, when we will be watching the summer collection, outside it will be -20 degrees.

Στα πλαίσια της έκθεσης μοδας του βερολίνου Bread&Butter συναντήσαμε τον ιδρυτή και σχεδιαστή της tokidoki, Simone Legno. ο Simone μίλησε στο οΖοΝ για την αγάπη του για την γιαπωνέζικη κουλτούρα, για το μέλλον των παιχνιδιών και για ο,τιδήποτε καινούργιο συμβαίνει στον πολύχρωμο και συναρπαστικό fashion κόσμο της tokidoki.

We met the designer and founder of the street-wear brand tokidoki, Simone Legno in Berlin during the Bread&Butter trade show. Simone talked to OZON about his love for the Japanese culture, his upcoming projects and everything that is new and exciting in the colourful fashion world of tokidoki. Πως προέκυψε η αγάπη σου για το illustration; Σαν παιδί μου άρεσαν πολύ τα γιαπωνέζικα κινούμενα σχέδια και η γιαπωνέζικη κουλτούρα γενικότερα. Στην πορεία ξεκίνησα να αναμειγνύω όλες τις επιρροές που είχα. Στην εφηβεία μου ήμουν μέλος μιας punk rock μπάντας, των ‘89 years’, και έτσι ξεκίνησα να χρησιμοποιώ όλα αυτά τα punkrock στοιχεία: Τατουάζ, καρφιά και rock n roll εικόνες. Στην συνέχεια μετακόμισα στο Λος Άντζελες και εμπνεύστηκα από τη street κουλτούρα και το streetwear. Τέλος, το γεγονός ότι είμαι Ιταλός με ώθησε στο να προσθέσω στο ‘μείγμα’ όλα αυτά τα στερεοτυπικά συστατικά της Ιταλικής κουλτούρας όπως είναι οι βέσπες, η πίτσα και το ποδόσφαιρο. Η tokidoki είναι το αποτέλεσμα που προέκυψε από το συνδυασμό όλων αυτών των πραγμάτων. Τι είναι αυτό που ξεχωρίζεις περισσότερο στη γιαπωνέζικη αισθητική; Έχεις κάποια αγαπημένη καρτούν φιγούρα; Αυτό που πραγματικά αγαπώ στην Ιαπωνία είναι η μείξη δύο διαφορετικών μεταξύ τους αισθητικών. Από τη μία το εξαιρετικά μίνιμαλ, καθαρό και εκλεπτυσμένο στυλ της ιαπωνικής αρχιτεκτονικής και του design και από την άλλη οι χρωματιστές καρτουνίστικες εικόνες που συναντάς παντού. Ακόμα και η αστυνομία στην Ιαπωνία έχει ένα αξιαγάπητο καρτούν ως σύμβολο. Ποια είναι η άποψή σου για το μέλλον της παγκόσμιας αγοράς των παιχνιδιών, μετά μάλιστα από την είσοδο πολλών νέων brands. Υπάρχει χώρος για όλες αυτές τις εταιρίες; Στην Ευρώπη τουλάχιστον, όπου η αγορά είναι περισσότερο καινούργια, τα πράγματα είναι καλύτερα. Στην Αμερική, μετά την άνοδο που υπήρχε πριν έξι-εφτά χρόνια, πλέον επιβιώνουν μόνο δύο ή τρεις εταιρίες. Η αγορά εκεί έχει κορεστεί και υπάρχει χώρος μόνο για εκείνες τις εταιρίες που έχουν κάποια ιστορία και είναι ήδη γνωστές στο χώρο. Σε κάθε περίπτωση τα παιχνίδια έχουν γίνει πια μέρος της καθημερινής ζωής: Τη δεκαετία του ‘80 κρεμούσαμε πόστερ των Duran Duran στους τοίχους ενώ σήμερα οι νέοι έχουν παιχνίδια για διακοσμητικά. Οι φιγούρες είναι μέρος της σύγχρονης κουλτούρας και σίγουρα έχουν έρθει για να μείνουν. Μετά από τόσες συνεργασίες και πρότζεκτ με διαφορετικά brands, υπάρχει κάποια που έχεις ξεχωρίσει ή κάποια καινούργια που περιμένεις με αγωνία; Η συνεργασία για την οποία είμαι πραγματικά περήφανος είναι αυτή με τον Karl Lagerfeld, καθώς πρόκειται για ένα ζωντανό μύθο και ίσως για το μοναδικό σχεδιαστή που τον σέβονται τόσο στο χώρο της υψηλής μόδας αλλά και του streetwear. Επίσης απόλαυσα τη συνεργασία με την Onitsuka Tiger καθώς είμαι μεγάλος fan των sneakers. Όσον αφορά τα επόμενα σχέδια μας, σκοπεύουμε να κάνουμε ένα μικρό διάλειμμα από τις συνεργασίες και να συγκεντρωθούμε στην tokidoki. Βέβαια θα συνεχίσουμε τις πετυχημένες συνεργασίες μας με την Onitsuka, τη Sephora και τη Medicom καθώς και με την New Era. Ποια είναι τα σχέδια της tokidoki για το άμεσο μέλλον, ποιες είναι οι καινούργιες προτάσεις που περιμένουμε; Τα tokidoki sneakers, την ενδυνάμωση της apparel συλλογής, μια καινούργια σειρά από τσάντες και μια σειρά καλλυντικών που ξεκινήσαμε σε συνεργασία με τη Sephora στην Αμερική και τον Καναδά και έρχεται σύντομα και στην Ευρώπη. Για εμένα, σαν σχεδιαστή, ήταν μια πρόκληση και ένας καινούργιος κόσμος που έπρεπε να εξερευνήσω. Είμαι πολύ χαρούμενος με το αποτέλεσμα. Το διασκέδαζω.

How did you develop your love for illustration? As a kid I was very much into Japanese animation and Japanese culture. I always wanted to create this simple and cute edgy style. Eventually, I started mixing up all my experiences. When I was a teenager I was in a punkrock band called ‘89 years’ so I started using all these punkrock elements like tattoos‚ coloured hair‚ spikes and rock-n-roll icons. Later on I moved in Los Angeles and I got inspired by the street culture and street wear: bling-bling‚ guns‚ bullets‚ diamonds‚ money and gangs. Finally, being Italian I incorporated inside stereotypic elements of our culture like pizzas‚vespas and soccer. So in general I mix up a little bit of everything and the end result is tokidoki.

Do you have a favourite Japanese cartoon/character? What I love about Japan‚ is the double iconography‚ one is the super minimal very clean and sophisticated look; the Japanese architecture, the interior design and then is the other face of Japan with the cute character iconography that you can find everywhere even the police in Japan has a cute character as an icon.

What do you think of the toy scene? Μany brands have emerged in this niche market; is there enough room for all these companies? I think that there is still space left in Europe because they arrived later. In America there are a few survivors, six or seven years ago when it was still very fresh and loads of companies were blooming, now there are two or three left. The market is getting a bit overstuffed leaving room only space for older companies who have a history and are respected in the community.Toys are always going to be there they have become part of daily life: in the 80s you had a poster of Duran Duran now the new youth has a toy on their desk in the office or home. Toys will stay and will stay for a long time.

You have collaborated with many brands and projects. Is there a favourite one or an upcoming that you would like to talk about? The one I am more proud of, is the one with Karl Lagerfeld‚ as he is the number one living icon in fashion and it is probably the only icon respected by high fashion‚ common people and street-wear. I also love sneakers and I was very happy to work for two years with Onitsuka Tiger and I always love a bit of everything I do. Upcoming? We will slow down a bit with collaborations and try to focus on our product. We will continue the collaboration with Onitsuka‚ Sephora and Medicom and of course we will be working more with New Era. What is new in tokidoki for the next season? Any new products?

Our own tokidoki sneakers, a full powerful apparel collection, a cosmetics line that we started with Sephora in America and Canada coming soon in Europe.

For me, as a designer, it was a new forest that I have to explore and learn and I work with so much people. We have a new bag line. Τις τελευταίες εβδομάδες άρχισαν να έρχονται στα mail μας φωτογραφίες που τράβηξαν φίλοι του περιοδικού με πρωταγωνιστή το ΟΖΟΝ International. Το ‘Oops, I Did it Again’ τεύχος μας, ένα τεύχος αφιερωμένο στο χάος, φιλοξενείται πλέον στα πιο γνωστά βιβλιοπωλεία την Ευρώπης.

During the last few weeks we began receiving emails, from OZON’s friends, starring OZON International. ‘Oops, I Did it Again’, the creative chaos issue, made an exciting debut to important fashion capitals and it is now sold at the most prestigious bookstores around the world. Τον Ιούλιο το OZON International ξεκίνησε να διανέμεται διεθνώς μέσω της Pineapple Media, έναν από τους πιο σημαντικούς διανομείς της Ευρώπης στο χώρο των ‘independent style magazines’ που έχει αναλάβει περιοδικά όπως το Volt, το ZOO και το Industrie και κάνει διανομή σε παραπάνω από 70 χώρες στον κόσμο. Χαθήκαμε στον κόσμο της μόδας με τις πολλά υποσχόμενες σχεδιάστριες Felder Felder και Katie Eary, οι οποίες φωτογραφήθηκαν στα χαοτικά στούντιό τους και επιχειρήσαμε να ανακαλύψουμε την καινούργια καλλιτεχνική σκηνή της Αθήνας μιλώντας με ανθρώπους που έχουν περίεργα ψευδώνυμα όπως Yatzer και Cacao Rocks. Το επόμενο OZON International θα κυκλοφορήσει τον Ιανουάριο και μέχρι τότε περιμένουμε ακόμα περισσότερες φωτογραφίες… σαν ευχές για καλή αρχή!

In our ‘Oops, I Did it Again’ issue we are exploring the notion of creative chaos.

We asked about panic, disorder and the creative process artists as important as Linder Sterling and Aurel Schmidt. We got lost in the world of fashion with up and coming designers Felder Felder and Katie Earie and we explored the new art scene of our chaotic city, asking questions to people with weird nicknames such as Yatzer and Cacao Rocks.

Our upcoming OZON International will be out in January. Until then keep sending us your photos which is just like wishing us a great start.

Στην εικόνα που φτιάχνεις τα 20-χρονα μοντέλα αράζουν κάπως απρόθυμα δίπλα σε παχουλές κυρίες που φορούν δερμάτινα, παππούδες με μουστάκια βρίσκονται πάνω σε ένα στρώμα που αιωρείται και μια αγελάδα κοιτάζει κάτι που μοιάζει με φεγγάρι και λείπει από τη σελίδα 83. Λες ότι θεωρείς πιθανό να με ερωτευτείς, όπως θεωρείς πιθανό να γίνεις αστροναύτης ή να παίξεις μουσική με τον Tom Waits στο υπόγειο του σπιτιού σου. Στο μυαλό σου δεν υπάρχει το απίθανο, υπάρχει μόνο η πιθανότητα να ταιριάζουν όλα. Να συναντηθούν όλα ταυτόχρονα και να καθίσουν το ένα διπλά στο άλλο- ίσως λίγο πετσοκομμένα είναι η αλήθεια –αλλά παρόλαυτά στοιχισμένα και ακόμα αδιανόητα. Κάθε φορά που το ΟΖΟΝ φεύγει από τα χέρια μας, γίνεται μέρος ενός τεράστιου αστικού κολάζ όπου ο καθένας μπορεί συμμετέχει όπως νομίζει. Στο τεύχος Σεπτεμβρίου, επιστρέφουμε στην πραγματικότητα και αποφασίζουμε ότι μας αρέσουν τα απίθανα που συναντιούνται. Στις σελίδες που ακολουθούν ο αρχιτέκτονας Αριστείδης Αντονάς οραματίζεται σπίτια σε λεωφορεία, δίπλα στον Αμερικανό καλλιτέχνη Ryan McNamara που μόλις έγινε χορευτής, ενώ λίγο πιο κάτω ο σκηνοθέτης Άγγελος Φραντζής μας μιλά για την καινούργια του ταινία που γυρίστηκε μέσα σε δάση και είναι ‘ένα παραμύθι που δεν μπορούν να παρακολουθήσουν παιδιά’. Και στο γραφείο μόλις πήραμε την απόφαση αυτό το φθινόπωρο να πιστέψουμε με μανία σε ‘εκείνοπουδεμπορείνασυμβεί’.

I hand the magazine to you and you go through it. You say you like it and ask me if you can keep it. I offer it to you and you place it prominently amongst the other books on your bookshelves. When I come back, you want to give something in return. On the image you have made, some 20-year old models stand hesitant next to a few chubby ladies in leather, old men in moustaches rise on top of a flying mattress and a cow gazes at something that looks like a moon cut out of page 83. You say that falling in love with me is always a possibility just like it is possible that you will become an astronaut or play music in your basement with Tom Waits. In your mind the improbable doesn’t exist, only the likelihood of everything falling into place. Everything coming together instantaneously, sitting one by the other, maybe incomplete but yet all in a row and still incredible.

Every time ΟΖΟΝ leaves our hands it becomes part of an enormous urban collage where everyone takes part just like one wishes. On September Issue we come back to reality having decided that we enjoy the encounter of the improbable. On the pages that follow the architect Aristιde Antonas imagines houses in buses, the American artist Ryan McNamara has just become a dancer while, a bit further, director Aggelos Frantzis talks about his new film, a movie in a forest, ‘a children’s tale that can only be seen by adults.’ Whilst in the office we have just decided this autumn we will passionately believe in ‘theonethatcannothappen’.

Μοιάζει κοινοτοπία να περιγράψεις το πρόγραμμα του 16ου Διεθνούς Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου της Αθήνας ως ‘επαναστατικό’. Κι όμως με έναν περίεργο τρόπο -περισσότερο φέτος από κάθε άλλη προηγούμενη χρονιά- οι επιλογές του κρύβουν μέσα τους μια διάθεση επείγοντος. Με το ήδη κλασικό ‘The Kids Are Alright’ της Lisa Cholodenko να δίνει το σύνθημα στο άνοιγμα του φεστιβάλ μπορείς να είσαι σίγουρος πως κάθε ταινία βρίσκεται στο πρόγραμμα του φεστιβάλ για κάποιο (σοβαρό) λόγο, με σημαντικότερο αυτόν που ορίζει την πολύπαθη έννοια του καλού σινεμά. Η νέα κωμωδία του παραγωγικότατου Woody Allen (‘You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger’), το πολυσυζητημένο λόγω των ακραίων σκηνών βίας pulp νουάρ του Michael Winterbottom (‘Ο Δολοφόνος Μέσα Μου’), το ανατρεπτικό ασιατικό ριμέικ του ‘Μόνο Αίμα’ των αδερφών Coen (‘Μια γυναίκα, Ένας Άντρας και Ένα Εστιατόριο Για Νουντλ’), το βραβευμένο με το πρώτο Queer Palm στο φεστιβάλ Καννών διασκεδαστικά ανατρεπτικό φιλμ του Gregg Araki (‘Kaboom’) είναι μόνο ένα δείγμα από τις φετινές μεγάλες πρεμιέρες που θα πρωταγωνιστήσουν στα βραβεία και τις λίστες με τις καλύτερες ταινίες της χρονιάς. Δίπλα τους, το αφιέρωμα στον ηγέτη της βελγικής πρωτοπορίας Olivier Smolders ανοίγει την πόρτα σε ένα ιδιοφυές σκοτεινό, ερωτικό και προκλητικό σύμπαν μέσα από οκτώ μικρού μήκους ταινίες και την μοναδική μεγάλου μήκους απόπειρά του με τίτλο ‘Μαύρη Νύχτα’. Σε μια λίστα που δεν τελειώνει ποτέ και που είναι έτσι κι αλλιώς προτιμότερο από το να την διαβάζετε να την δείτε ιδίοις όμασι στις σκοτεινές αίθουσες, δεν θα μπορούσε να λείπει η αναφορά στο μεγάλο κλασικό αφιέρωμα του φεστιβάλ στον Ernst Lubitsch. Υπεύθυνος για μια ολόκληρη σχολή στην κωμωδία και διάσημος για το άγγιγμα του ‘The Lubitsch Touch’ κανείς δεν θα σας κατηγορήσει αν στο τέλος του φεστιβάλ σας ρωτήσουν ποια ήταν η καλύτερη ταινία που είδατε φέτος και εσείς ψηφίσετε με όλη την καρδιά σας κάποια ανάμεσα στο ‘To Be Or Not To Be’, στο ‘Heaven Can Wait’, στο ‘Trouble In Paradise’ ή το ‘The Shop Around The Corner’. Το έργο του είναι σοβαρός λόγος και επανάσταση από μόνο του.

Seems commonplace to describe the program of the 16th International Film Festival as ‘revolutionary’. Yet in a strange way - more this year than any previous years- the film selection reveals a sense of urgency. When the already classic ‘The Kids Are All Right’ by Lisa Cholodenko celebrates the opening of the festival you can be sure that every film in this year’s program, has made it there for a (sound) reason -most importantly for keeping up with the definition of good cinema. The new comedy by the ultra-productive Woody Allen (‘You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger’), the highly debated due to the extreme scenes of violence, pulp noir film by Michael Winterbottom (‘The Killer Inside Me’), the Asian subversive remake of ‘Simple Blood’ by the Coen brothers (‘A Woman, A Man and a Noodle Restaurant’), the winner of the first Queer Palm at Cannes the cheerful film by Gregg Araki (‘Kaboom’) is just a sample of this year’s big premieres that will dominate the lists of next year’s best films. Beside these, a tribute to the leader of the Belgian avant-garde Olivier Smolders opens the door to a dark, brilliant and erotic universe in eight short films together with ‘Black Night’ his single feature attempt. The also Francophone tribute to Sebastien Lifshitz, queer cinema agent in France, offers a unique opportunity to see the 2004 Teddy Award winner at the Berlin Film Festival ‘Wild Side’ as well as his new movie ‘Plein Sud’.During recent years the festival organisers persist in promoting the increasingly dynamic Greek film production. Σε έναν κόσμο ως επί το πλείστον ακαλαίσθητο και γεμάτο ‘οπτικούς θορύβους’, ένα ζευγάρι αρχιτεκτόνων, ο Μπάμπης Παπανικολάου (1,73) και η Χριστίνα Τσιγαρέλου (1,57) έρχονται να τον απλοποιήσουν για μας, δημιουργώντας αντικείμενα που σε τίποτε δεν θυμίζουν όσα έχουμε συνηθίσει να βλέπουμε, όμως σε μια δεύτερη ανάγνωση μας είναι πολύ οικεία και εύχρηστα.

In a world unpleasantly full of visual noise, comes the work of a couple of young architects, Babis Papanikolaou (1.73) and Christina Tsigarelou (1.57). Their aim is to simplify the clutter by creating unusual looking objects that on second though fulfil their functional purpose just as much.

Με σπουδές αρχιτεκτονικής σε Ελλάδα και Αγγλία, το 2009 δημιουργούν τους 157+173 designers από την ανάγκη τους για παιχνίδι και έκφραση μέσω των υλικών και των μορφών. ‘Μέχρι τότε δουλεύαμε σε αρχιτεκτονικά γραφεία για άλλους, όμως αυτό νιώσαμε ότι έκανε τον κύκλο του και έπρεπε να δημιουργήσουμε κάτι δικό μας, να το δουλεύουμε με τον τρόπο που θέλουμε εμείς’ λέει ο Μπάμπης. Στον χώρο τους, φτιαγμένο επίσης με πολύ κόπο, αν σκεφτεί κανείς ότι πριν αποτελούσε μια παλιά εγκαταλελειμμένη αποθήκη, επικρατεί το λευκό, τα διαφορετικά υλικά και οι φόρμες. Υλικά όπως το ξύλο,το τσιμέντο, το μέταλλο, το γυαλί παίρνουν τη μορφή αντικειμένων που θα μπορούσαν να είναι μέρος των σκηνικών του Dogville αφού παίζουν με το δισδιάστατο και τις όψεις ενώ είναι έκδηλη η θεατρικότητά τους. Πινέλα, γρανάζια, καλώδια, λάμπες και εργαλεία κάθε είδους συνθέτουν το σκηνικό της δημιουργίας και περιμένουν να γίνουν μέρος ακόμα μιας πρωτότυπης ιδέας. Η απόδοση στις δύο διαστάσεις είναι ίσως απόρροια και έμπνευση από τη δεύτερη ενασχόληση της Χριστίνας η οποία παράλληλα κατασκευάζει πρότυπα – μοντέλα αναπαράστασης αρχιτεκτονικών ιδεών σε συνεργασία με διάφορα γραφεία. Light installations, door stops, επιφάνειες κοπής, κρεμάστρες είναι λίγα μόνο από τα αντικείμενα που θα δει κανείς στον κατάλογό τους από τα οποία καθόλου δεν λείπει η χρηστικότητα αλλά και το χιούμορ ενώ οι περισσότερες θεματικές επιλογές γίνονται μέσα από τα βιώματα του καθενός. Ιδανικό παράδειγμα η μορφή της γάτας, αγαπημένου ζώου του Μπάμπη, που κάνει την εμφάνισή της σε πολλές από τις δημιουργίες τους, ενώ στο σύνολό τους τα αντικείμενα αποπνέουν την αίσθηση του γήινου και καθόλου ξένου προς τον άνθρωπο, περιβάλλοντος. Μέσα από την πρώτη αυτή σειρά δίνουν σίγουρα κάτι το διαφορετικό σε έναν χώρο που χρειάζεται νέες ματιές και κάνουν πράξη τις αρχές τις οποίες ο Βιτρούβιος επισημαίνει ως βασικές στo συναρπαστικό και τόσο δημιουργικό κόσμο της αρχιτεκτονικής: Ομορφιά (Venustas), Σταθερότης (Firmitas) και Ευχρηστία (Utilitas). Επόμενό τους πρότζεκτ η συνεργασία με το Μουσείο Μπενάκη και η δημιουργία αντικειμένων εμπνευσμένων από το έργο του μεγάλου ζωγράφου Νίκου Χατζηκυριάκου - Γκίκα στα πλαίσια λειτουργίας του καινούριου κτιρίου, που θα εγκαινιαστεί στο όνομά του τον ερχόμενο Οκτώβρη.

All items exude an earthy feeling fit to the human environment.

Having studied architecture in both Greece and the UK, Babis and Christina decide in 2009 to create their own studio. 157+173 designers emerge out of their need for play and expression through materials and form.’Until then we were working for other architectural practices’ Babis says, adding that ‘at one point we felt that the time was right to create something of our own and work in our own way. ’Their studio, located in an old abandoned warehouse, was also a project made with a lot of personal effort. Now white is the dominant colour together with a variety of materials and forms. Materials such as timber, concrete, metal and glass are made into objects that could be part of Dogville’s set, composing a theatrical scene, an interplay of two dimensional forms, views and perspective. Their two dimensional compositions may also be inspired by Christina’s second occupation, that of her model making in collaboration with various architectural practices. Brushes, gears, cables, lamps and tools in all shapes and sizes make up the backdrop of creation and become elements of another original idea.

Light installations, door stoppers, cutting surfaces, hangers are only but a few of the objects one can view in their catalogue. All highly functional without lacking a humorous side while the thematic choices reflect their creator’s experiences. Greatest example that of the cat, Babis’ favourite animal, featuring in many of their creations. As a general rule, all items exude an earthy feeling fit to the human environment. Through their first line they offer a new and unique view to a field in need for innovation. At the same time they also keep in touch with Vitruvius’ canons of architecture: Beauty (Venustas), Strength (Firmitas) and Utility (Utilitas).For their following project, they collaborate with the Benaki Museum in creating objects inspired by the work of the great painter Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika in preparation for the launch of a new gallery bearing his name beginning of October.

Ξεκίνησε τη ζωή του στην Αθήνα. Μεγάλωσε παρατηρώντας την πόλη του και ανακαλύπτοντας την ομορφιά της σε πράγματα που άλλοι περιφρονούσαν. Έκανε μερικές βόλτες στον μικρόκοσμο της βιολογίας, όμως η αγάπη για την αρχιτεκτονική, και η κλίση του στο σχέδιο τον έφεραν μερικά χρόνια μετά με ένα πτυχίο αρχιτεκτονικής από το ΕΜΠ. Η αναζήτηση συνεχίστηκε με ένα διδακτορικό φιλοσοφίας στο Παρίσι και με συζητήσεις με τον Derrida και άλλα ανήσυχα πνεύματα της παριζιάνικης διανόησης, ενώ όσο θυμάται τον εαυτό του, μία δύναμη τον οδηγεί να γράφει θεατρικά έργα και φιλοσοφικά μυθιστορήματα. Σήμερα, έχοντας επιστρέψει πια στην Αθήνα, ο Αριστείδης Αντονάς, με την ιδιότητα του αρχιτέκτονα, εξερευνά νέα οικιστικά μοντέλα, προτείνοντας νέες χρήσεις σε αντικείμενα που σε πρώτη φάση δεν σχεδιάστηκαν ως μέρη κατοικίας. Αυτή την περίοδο σχεδιάζει ένα σπίτι που ονομάζεται ‘Responsible House’ και είναι ένας χώρος αδράνειας, μία κατοικία για να μην κάνει κανείς τίποτε, ένα πρότζεκτ που διερευνά τη ρήση του Ζίζεκ, ότι ίσως η πιο υπεύθυνη πολιτική στάση στη σημερινή εποχή είναι η απραξία. Στις αρχές Οκτωβρίου θα παρουσιάσει τη δουλειά του στο Politecnico di Milano, ενώ το τελευταίο του θεατρικό έργο με τίτλο ‘Tα Κτίσματα’ πρόκειται να εκδοθεί μέσα στο έτος από τις εκδόσεις Άγρα.

His life begun in Athens. He grew up observing his city discovering beauty in things neglected by others. He took a stroll into the microcosm of Biology but his love for Architecture as well as his love for drawing made him change direction and graduate from the EMP with a degree in architecture. The search went on with a PhD in Philosophy in Paris, conversing with Derrida and other restless spirits of the Parisian intellectual world. As far back as he remembers, a force is leading him to write dramas for the theatre and philosophical novels that feature in both bookshops and architectural university libraries. Today, having returned to Athens as an architect, Aristides Antonas examines new residential models by suggesting alternative uses for objects unlike houses. At the moment his is designing a house entitled ‘Responsible House’ which is based on the concept fn idleness exploring Zizek’s perception of non-action as a political act. Ιn early October his work will be presented at Politecnico di Milano, while during the year his latest theatrical drama ‘Ta Ktismata’ will be published by Agra publications. Ξέρω πως δεν προτιμάς τα πρότζεκτ που έχουν προκαθορισμένες προϋποθέσεις από τον πελάτη, όμως όταν καλείσαι να αναλάβεις κάτι τέτοιο, πώς αντιμετωπίζεις το μπανάλ και το κλισέ; Πώς βρίσκεις τα επιμέρους στοιχεία των ‘παράδοξων συνθέσεών’ σου; Με ενδιαφέρει το μπανάλ και το κλισέ. Δεν είμαι εναντίον τους. Τα πρότζεκτ μου χαρακτηρίζονται ‘παράδοξες συνθέσεις’ επειδή υπάρχει το μπανάλ και το κλισέ. Μάλλον αυτά είναι το φυσικό περιβάλλον όσων κάνω. Το κοινότοπο έχει κάτι σκανδαλώδες. Στον Κάφκα το έμαθα αυτό. Το μπανάλ κρύβει τερατογεννέσεις ή αόρατες υπερβολές. Ακούω λοιπόν προσεκτικά όσους μου αναθέτουν κάτι και συνεννοούμαι μαζί τους καλά, αλλιώς δεν μπορώ να δουλέψω. Τα επιμέρους στοιχεία μου είναι υπαρκτά αντικείμενα, πράγματα ή συμβάντα που βρέθηκαν ή έγιναν μπροστά μου. Δεν είναι σπάνια. Η δουλειά μου είναι η σύνδεσή τους. Δεν υπακούει σε κανόνες. Στοχεύεις στην πραγματοποίηση των ‘φανταστικών’ πρότζεκτ σου ή απλά θέλεις να δώσεις μία δόση φαντασίας στον αυστηρό, ίσως στημένο κόσμο της αρχιτεκτονικής; Οι μελέτες μου γίνονται για να υλοποιηθούν. Μου κάνουν συχνά αυτή την ερώτηση. Τα σχέδια, αλλά και τα κείμενα καμιά φορά, είναι παρτιτούρες για κάτι που πρόκειται να ακολουθήσει. Η δομή του θεατρικού έργου είναι κυρίαρχη. Κανένα πρόγραμμα δεν παίρνει τελική μορφή. Σαν άπαικτες ακόμη παρτιτούρες. Αν στην κατάσταση που τα αφήνω λειτουργούν ως σχόλια ή ως διατυπώσεις, τόσο το καλύτερο.

Πώς θέτεις τα όρια μεταξύ του απλού και του ναρκισσιστικού στην Αρχιτεκτονική; Δεν υπάρχουν όρια ανάμεσα σε αυτές τις δύο κατηγορίες. Ναρκισσιστικό ονομάζω κάτι που ζητάει να αναγνωριστεί η υπεροχή του. Το ζητάει με πολύπλοκο ή με απλό τρόπο. Η ανυπομονησία για υπεροχή σκεπάζει τότε το έργο. Συνήθως έτσι αναγνωρίζω κάποιο είδος ενοχλητικού ναρκισσισμού. Κουράζει, όπως με κουράζουν οι άνθρωποι που μιλάνε πολύ για τον εαυτό τους και θέλουν να πιστέψουμε ότι είναι καταπληκτικοί. Αυτό γίνεται και με τα πράγματα που βρίσκονται γύρω μας, με όσα γράφουμε ή σχεδιάζουμε. Πολλοί νομίζουμε ότι είμαστε καταπληκτικοί αλλά όταν σωπαίνουμε φαινόμαστε καλύτεροι. Η τέχνη είναι φτιαγμένη από στρατηγικές του ναρκισσισμού. Θα ήταν υποκριτικό να ζητάμε μια μη ναρκισσιστική τέχνη. Χρειάζεται όμως να χειριστούμε κάπως το ναρκισσισμό. Το θέμα του τεύχους είναι το τραγούδι ‘Back to life’. Επιστρέφοντας στην πραγματικότητα της Αθήνας, πώς πιστεύεις ότι επηρεάζει ο τρόπος που κατοικείται η Αθήνα σήμερα, τον τρόπο ζωής και τον πολιτισμό των κατοίκων της; Ο τρόπος που κατοικείται η πόλη δεν ξεχωρίζει από τον πολιτισμό ούτε από τον τρόπο ζωής των κατοίκων. Η Αθήνα προσφέρει ένα πολύπλοκο κέλυφος. Φαντάζομαι πάντα το κέλυφος σαν να ήταν ερώτημα. Ο τρόπος που κατοικείται είναι μία πιθανή απάντηση. Ο πολιτισμός των κατοίκων του κελύφους είναι το όνομα για την απάντηση αυτή που ζητούσε το κέλυφος. Αν θέλουμε να βρούμε μια σημασία για την επιστροφή στη ζωή της Αθήνας θα έπρεπε να κατοικήσουμε με άλλους τρόπους το κέλυφος της πόλης, εφόσον αποφασίσουμε να μην το αλλάξουμε.

Ποια είναι τα στοιχεία της Αθήνας που εσύ δεν θα άλλαζες; Αυτά που πρέπει να μείνουν όπως έχουν είναι πολλά. Στην Αθήνα γίνομαι συντηρητικός. Πολλές πολυκατοικίες, περιοχές ολόκληρες, για διάφορους λόγους, έπρεπε να είναι διατηρητέες. Μου αρέσει η πόλη που γεννήθηκα. Δεν είναι η κοιτίδα του πολιτισμού ούτε όμως μια καταραμένη πόλη. Είναι μια αξιομνημόνευτα ομοιογενής πόλη, μια ιδιαίτερη μοντέρνα πόλη. Έχω κάνει αρκετά σχέδια για την Αθήνα. Μου φαίνεται σαν πεδίο φτιαγμένο για παραμορφώσεις. Μελέτησα δύο πλατείες, τα αστικά δώματα, μια γέφυρα στον αρχαιολογικό χώρο του Κεραμεικού, έναν δρόμο στο Μεταξουργείο… Έχω καθοριστεί από την Αθήνα. Σε αυτή την πόλη μεγάλωσα ενώ οι περισσότεροι την κακολογούσαν. Εγώ στην Αθήνα συνειδητοποίησα την κατασκευαστική δύναμη της παρατήρησης. Θα άλλαζα κάποια δομικά της χαρακτηριστικά λοιπόν σχετικά με τις υποδομές. Το κέλυφός της όμως είναι μαγικό, αυτό που βλέπουμε δηλαδή. Είναι πολύ λιγότερο πληκτικό από το κέλυφος τόσων ευρωπαϊκών πόλεων που υποτίθεται ότι είναι όμορφες. Δουλεύεις με φοιτητές, μέσα σε πανεπιστήμια αλλά και σε εργαστήρια, όπως το ‘Built Event Group’ που μέρος του έργου του συμμετείχε στην 2η Μπιενάλε Σύγχρονης Τέχνης Θεσσαλονίκης και στην 9η Διεθνή Μπιενάλε Αρχιτεκτονικής της Βενετίας. Πώς βλέπεις τους νέους, μελλοντικούς αρχιτέκτονες στην Ελλάδα; Πιστεύω στις μεγάλες ομάδες, στους κοινούς στόχους, στη συνθήκη του εργαστηρίου, σε συνεργασίες με ανθρώπους μικρότερους ή μεγαλύτερους. Η εποχή δεν ζητά πρόσωπα αλλά εργασίες. Θα έπρεπε νομίζω να είμαι αισιόδοξος για το μέλλον και να περιμένω πολλά αφού βλέπω κοινές εργασίες σε εξέλιξη και ικανούς ανθρώπους.

You’d rather deal with projects free from preset conditions formed by the client, but when it comes to facing the above how do you react to the banal and the cliché?

How do you introduce the elements of your ‘extraordinary compositions’?

I am actually interested in both the banal and the cliché. I guess this is the natural environment of what I do. There is something scandalous in commonplace. Kafka has taught me this. Banal conceals monstrousness or invisible extremes. I therefore listen carefully to the people who want me to do something for them and I get on well with them, otherwise it is impossible for me to work. The added elements are either tangible objects, things or events that came my way. These are nothing but rare. My job is to bring them together. Following no rules.

Is it your intention to realise your ‘fantasy’ projects or you just want to give a touch of fantasy in the austere and rigid world of architecture?

My studies are there to be realised. All drawings and sometimes texts are like music scores for something that follows. The theatre play structure is dominant in them. No programme has found its final form, like music scores yet to be played. It is a positive sign when their existing form provokes comments or debates. This has happened in the past before me with more important work.

How do you set the boundaries between the ordinary and narcissistic in Architecture?

There are no boundaries between the two. To me narcissistic is something that calls for superiority.

It does so in either complex or simple way. The anticipation for such primacy therefore is evident, surrounding the result. This is how I usually recognise this kind of disturbing narcissism. It tires just like I get tired by people talking too much about themselves wanting to make us believe their brilliance. This also happens with things that surround us, things we write or design. Many of us think we are brilliant but in silence we look better.

Art is constructed by strategic narcissism. It would be hypocritical to call for a non narcissistic art. But we do need to somehow deal with narcissism.

The theme for our issue is the song ‘Back to Life’. Coming back to the reality of Athens, how you think it affects the way Athens is inhabited today, the lifestyle and culture of its people?

The way the city is inhabited is inseparable from both culture and lifestyle of its inhabitants. Athens provides a complex shell. I picture the shell as if it brings up a question. The way it is inhabited provides one possible answer. The culture of its inhabitants offers a name to the answer required by the shell. If we wish to find a meaning for coming back to Athens we should inhabit its shell in different ways once we have priorly decided to keep it unaltered.

What are the elements of Athens you would wish to remain unchanged?

The ones that should stay as they were, are a lot.

Athens brings out the conservative in me. Many high rise buildings, entire areas should, for various reasons, be preserved and listed. I like the city I was born in. It is not the cradle of civilisation neither is cursed. It is a remarkably homogenous city, a great modern city. I have worked on several projects in Athens. It seems like a framework meant to be distorted. I have worked on the proposals for two squares, urban rooftops, a bridge in Keramikos’ archeological site, a road in Metaxourgeio… I have been determined by Athens. I grew up in a city while everyone was against it. In Athens I realised the constructive power of observation. What I would change would be some of the structural features regarding the infrastructure. However Athens’ shell, what we see, is magical. It is much less boring than the shell of any European city supposed to be beautiful.

You work with students in universities but also in workshops, such as the ‘Built Event Group’ which produced work the 2nd Biennale of Thessaloniki and the 9th Venice Architectural Biennale. What are your views on the new generation, future architects in Greece?

I believe in large teams, in common aims and workshop conditions, in collaboration among people however small or big. Our times demand for work, not individuals. I think I should be positive about the future and expect a lot since I see group work in progress and talented people.

Thanos Samaras talks to Panagiotis Hadjistefanou... Το φίλμ που πρωταγωνιστείς… πηγαίνει στη Βενετία! Φοβερό. Δεν έχω πάει ποτέ εκεί. Είσαι επισήμως ένα πραγματικό διεθνές αστέρι! Πώς αισθάνεσαι; Ήμουν εκεί με το ‘Delivery’ μερικά χρόνια πρίν. Με τόσο πολύ κόσμο είναι εξίσου ωραία αλλά και άσχημα. Εύχομαι να ήταν η δεκαετία του ‘60, μια εποχή επιτυχών ανταλλαγών στα ταλέντα. Αν κάποιος το επιθυμούσε μπορούσε να δουλέψει οπουδήποτε. Τι εκπληκτική καριέρα που είχε η Ειρήνη Παππά! Από ταινίες της Disney και του Κακογιάννη, μέχρι Ισπανικά b-movies και ζωντανά Αμερικάνικα ασπρόμαυρα σόους. Εκπληκτικό. Αυτή είναι σίγουρα μια ζωή που αξίζει. Ποιο είναι το θέμα στη ‘Χώρα Προέλευσης’; Είναι μια μάλλον βίαιη ταινία για μια υπόθεση υιοθεσίας δυο αδερφών που καταλήγει σε μια προνομιακή ανατροφή του ενός και σε μια στερημένη ζωή του άλλου. Εγώ παίζω τον δεύτερο. Το κορίτσι που αγαπώ, είναι ερωτευμένο με τον αδερφό μου, εγώ την απαγάγω και έρχεται η καταστροφή. Παράλληλα με την ιστορία αυτή, οι οικογενειακοί χαρακτήρες ζούνε το προσωπικό τους δράμα και όλα συνδέονται δεξιοτεχνικά. Είμαι περήφανος που συμμετέχω στο ευφυές αυτό το έργο του Σύλλα Τζουμέρκα. Υπάρχουν πολλοί που δεν γνωρίζουν ότι εκτός των άλλων, είσαι ένας εξαιρετικός καλλιτέχνης. Μίλησε μας γι’ αυτό. Μπα! Είμαι ακόμα μέτριος, αλλά ευχαριστώ. Μάλλον έχουμε έναν μικρό αμοιβαίο θαυμασμό μεταξύ μας. Είμαι μεγάλος θαυμαστής σου και είσαι ο Πολιούχος Άγιος των Ιδανικών, ένας μάρτυρας της τέχνης. Πάντοτε με τραβούσε η οπτική πλευρά των πραγμάτων. Πριν το Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, σπούδασα τέχνη, design και αρχιτεκτονική στο Guildhall University του Λονδίνου που με ξετρέλανε πολύ περισσότερο από τη δραματική σχολή. Τα πάντα μέσα στο κεφάλι μου έχουν νόημα μόνο όταν κωδικοποιούνται σε σχήματα και χρώματα. Μου είναι αδύνατο να επεξεργαστώ πληροφορίες αν δεν τις κωδικοποιήσω χρωματικά ή δεν τους αποδώσω απτή υφή. Για παράδειγμα το νούμερο οχτώ είναι υγρό και καφέ, το έξι σκληρό και κίτρινο, οι λέξεις κομμάτια ξανθού ξύλου, οι προτάσεις ποτάμια, το φαγητό ένα διάγραμμα, ο ουρανός τσιμέντο, κ.λπ. Αυτό που με προβληματίζει είναι ότι αρνούμαι στον εαυτό μου την ευκαιρία να παντρέψω τους δυο πολύ διαφορετικούς μου εαυτούς, τον ηθοποιό και τον καλλιτέχνη για να δω τι μπορεί να βγει. Προς το παρόν είμαι ο Θάνος Σαμαράς και είμαι ο Yatabazah, δύο φτιαχτοί χαρακτήρες, ο καθένας κάνει διαφορετικά πράγματα. Επιθυμώ την συγχώνευση και την εδραίωση. Νιώθω κουρασμένος και ασυνάρτητος. Ξέρω ότι στο σύντομο μέλλον θα σκηνοθετώ ταινίες. Μονάχα ένας αδαής μπορεί να είναι ικανοποιημένος με το να είναι απλά ηθοποιός. Είναι ασφυκτικά περιοριστικό. Fuck that. Αγαπάς τις γάτες. Αγαπώ τις γάτες. Ανάπτυξε. Οι γάτες είναι τα πλάσματα που μαζί τους επικοινωνώ πραγματικά. Καμία γάτα όσο άγρια και ανεκπαίδευτη και αν είναι, δεν είναι ικανή να αντισταθεί και να μην υποκύψει στο άγγιγμά μου! Ξέρω απλά πώς να τις ακουμπήσω, πως να τους μιλήσω, τι λόγια να πω και σε ποια ένταση. Πάντοτε έτρεφα την μεγαλύτερη τρυφερότητα για τις γάτες και ήταν πάντα αμοιβαίο. Πολλοί μου λένε συχνά ότι η κίνηση και η εμφάνιση μου μοιάζει με γάτα. Δεν το αρνούμαι, νιώθω αιλουροειδές. Τα σκυλιά δεν δείχνουν ενδιαφέρον για μένα, κάτι επίσης αμοιβαίο. ‘Το τέλος του κόσμου έπρεπε να είχε έρθει γύρω στο 1959’. Ανάπτυξε. Είναι κάτι που έγραψα στο Twitter τις προάλλες σαν διαμαρτυρία για όλα τα υπέρ-μοντερνισσόμενα πράγματα που εκσυγχρονίζονται απροκάλυπτα μόνο και μόνο για να δείχνουν τωρινά. Υπάρχει κάτι τόσο πλήρες στη δεκαετία του ‘50. Λίγο Bauhaus, πολύ Dada, λίγο μελαγχολική

μεταπολεμική απλότητα αλλά και μια σαφή ανάγκη για πολυτέλεια. Ευχαρίστως θα ζούσα σε μια κάψουλα του χρόνου στην εποχή εκείνη. Βαρύς, ακόρεστος, ασφαλής. Δώσε στους αναγνώστες μας μερικές συμβουλές. Πρότεινε τους ταινίες για να δουν, βιβλία να διαβάσουν. Δίδαξε τις μάζες, τώρα αμέσως αν μπορείς. Σας προκαλώ να βρείτε μια ταινία προ του ‘70 και να την απολαύσετε με τον γαμημένο ήχο σβηστό. Λοιπόν εντάξει, δείτε τα L’Annee Derniere a Marienbad, Les Yeux Sans Visage, Vertigo, Orphee. Επίσης, σταματήστε να βλέπετε τηλεόραση, απλά κόψτε το γαμημένο καλώδιο. Μπορείτε να είστε ενημερωμένοι online. Αυτό που θέλω να πω είναι: δημιουργήστε το δικό σας ξεχωριστό περιεχόμενο. Προσαρμόστε, διαλέξτε και επιλέξτε τις πηγές των ερεθισμάτων σας. Η τηλεόραση μπορεί να σκοτώσει το μυαλό και θα το κάνει. Διοικείται από ηλίθιους. Ποιο είναι το πρόβλημα με τους νέους σήμερα; Επιπλέον, τι είναι το σωστό με αυτούς; Οι περισσότεροι φίλοι μου είναι νεότεροι κατά μια δεκαετία τουλάχιστον. Δεν το επιλέγω συνειδητά ωστόσο φαίνεται να αποτελεί μοτίβο στον κύκλο μου. Συνήθως δημιουργώ φιλίες και σχέσεις με ανθρώπους νεότερους από μένα και ίσως είναι μια μορφή βαμπιρισμού. Από την άλλη δεν μπορώ να γενικεύσω. Έχω γνωρίσει εκπληκτικά ευαίσθητους, ταλαντούχους και εργατικούς νέους όπως και έχω γνωρίσει αρκετούς φρικαλέους, στενόμυαλους, επικίνδυνους, τεμπέληδες νεαρούς μαλάκες. Οι καλοί είναι περισσότεροι όμως… γάμησέ τα, δεν ξέρω τίποτα. Ονόμασε μερικούς ανθρώπους του σινεμά, σύγχρονους ή μη, που έχουν επηρεάσει την κινηματογραφική σου αισθητική. Αυτός με τον οποίο μπορώ να ταυτιστώ, αυτός που με έχει εμπνεύσει περισσότερο από κάθε άλλον, είναι ο Jean Cocteau. Οι ταινίες του είναι ποιητικά πορνό. Αυτός θέλω να γίνω όταν μεγαλώσω. Εκτός από αυτόν, μου αρέσει η ισραηλινή ηθοποιός Delphine Seyrig και η Αμερικανίδα πορνό ηθοποιός Jeanna Fine. Πώς χαλαρώνεις μετά από μια δύσκολη μέρα δίνοντας συνεντεύξεις για περιοδικά και κάνοντας παρέα με άτομα όπως moi; Μου αρέσει να περνάω τον χρόνο μου στη τουαλέτα με απολαυστικές, χαλαρωτικές ‘εκκενώσεις’. Το μπάνιο, είναι το αγαπημένο μου μέρος στο σπίτι. Έχω μια μεγάλη συλλογή από εξαίσια αρωματικά σαπούνια, σπάνια σαμπουάν και μυστηριώδη αρωματικά σώματος, σφουγγάρια, βούρτσες και άλλα εργαλεία καλλωπισμού. Η καθημερινή μου τελετουργία στο μπάνιο, αποτελεί μια προσευχή πως θα εξέλθω από το ατμώδες αυτό ιερό σαν κάτι διαφορετικό από αυτό που είμαι, καλύτερος, ομορφότερος, εξυπνότερος, καινούργιος. Επίσης μαγειρεύω καθημερινά, φροντίζω τα φυτά μου, καθαρίζω το σπίτι, φωτογραφίζω κούκλες, φτιάχνω πράγματα. Αλλά δεν μπορώ να μιλήσω για αυτά, αυτό είναι δουλειά του Yatabazah. Γιατί ο Jean Desses δεν εκτιμάται από τους συμπατριώτες του; ΟMG. Οι Έλληνες δεν υποστηρίζουν τα ταλέντα τους. Σοκαρίστηκα. Αλλά σοβαρά κανένας με πραγματικό ταλέντο δεν θα χαραμίσει τον πολύτιμο χρόνο του στην Ελλάδα. Είναι νεκρή ζώνη. Καταδικασμένη, βρώμικη και άφωνη. Εύχομαι ένα τεράστιο τρομερό πουτσο-τέρας να εμφανιστεί σε αυτόν τον τόπο και να μάθει στους Έλληνες πειθαρχία και υπευθυνότητα στη δουλειά. Πούτσο και ξύλο. Πούτσο και ξύλο. Σου φαίνομαι για πατριώτης; Ποιο άγαλμα θα φιλούσες χωρίς λεφτά; Έχω κάνει βίαιο έρωτα στο Oscar που κέρδισε ένας φίλος το 1969. Αυτό το πράγμα είναι πολύ βαρύ, να το ξέρεις. The film project you are starring in…is going to Venice! Wow. I have never been there. You are an official, real, international star! How do you feel?

I was there for ‘Delivery’ few years back. It’s great fun as well as a great big headache. Too many people at one time.

I wish it was the 60s, it was a time of great talent exchange. One could work anywhere, if one wished it. What a yummy career Irene Papas has had. From Disney films to Cacoyiannis, to Spanish b-movies, to live American b/w television shows. Insane. Now that, is a life worth living.

What is this ‘Homeland’ film about?

It’s a rather violent movie about an adoption case that leads to one boy being given a privileged upbringing and the other left to a life of lack of everything.

I play the latter. The girl I’m in love with, is in love with my fortunate brother.

I kidnap her, it leads to disaster. Parallel to this storyline, there are family characters living out their own drama and it’s all interwoven cleverly. I’m very proud to be part of this project. Syllas Tzoumerkas did an ingenious job.

Many people have no idea that you are a brilliant visual artist as well. Tell us about it.

Yikes, I am quite mediocre still, but thanks. I guess we have a little mutual admiration socially going here, I am a huge fan of yours, you are my Patron Saint of Ideals, an art martyr.

Anyhoo, I have always been focused on the visual side of things. Before attending at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, I studied art and design and Architecture at London Guildhall University. Loved it more than drama school.

Everything in my head, in order to make sense, must first be coded in shapes and colors. I can’t process information before I color code it, or before I give it a tangible texture. For example number 8 is liquid and brown, 6 is hard and yellow, words are pieces of blond wood, sentences are rivers, food is a grid chart, the sky is cement, etc.

The thing I find most confusing is that I deny myself the opportunity to marry my two, very distinct selves, the actor of sorts and the visual artist of sorts and see what that makes. For the time being, I am Thanos Samaras and I am Yatabazah, both made up characters, each doing something different. I would like to merge and consolidate. I feel tired and disjointed. I know I will be directing movies sometime soon. Only a true idiot can be contained in being a mere actor, it’s such a limited platform. Fuck that.

You love cats. I love cats. Discuss.

Cats are the people I truly communicate with. No cat, no matter how wild or untrained, will resist me, will not succumb to my touch! I just know how to touch them, speak to them, what to say to them, at what volume. I’ve always had the deepest affection for cats and it was reciprocated. People often tell me I move and look like a cat, I don’t deny it, I do feel feline. Dogs don’t care much for me and it’s mutual.

‘The world should have ended circa 1959’. Discuss.

Well, I twitted that the other day in protest to all things overly modernesque and overtly streamlined for the sake of looking current and relevant. There is something so satisfying and complete about the 50s. A little Bauhaus, a lot of Dada, a little somber post-war simplicity but also a definite need for luxury

too. I’d totally live in a time capsule of that era and be thrilled about it. Heavy, unsaturated and safe.

Give our readers some tips. Suggest some films to watch, books to read. Educate the masses, now, if you please.

I dare you to find a pre-70s film that you can enjoy with the fucking sound OFF. Ok, go watch L’Annee Derniere a Marienbad, Les Yeux Sans Visage, Vertigo and Orphee. Also stop watching television, cut the fucking antenna cable. You can still stay up to date with the news, online. My point is, create your own life’s content. Customize, pick and choose the sources of your stimuli. Television can and will, kill your mind. It’s run by idiots.

What is wrong with youngsters nowadays? Moreover, what is right about them?

Most of my friends are at least a decade younger than I. I don’t consciously chose this, however it seems to be a motif in my circle of people. I will more often than not, form friendships and relationships with people younger than myself. I suspect a form of vampirism.

I can’t generalize about it, I’ve met wonderfully sensitive, talented, crafty and effective young peoples, I also have met horrid, narrow minded, dangerous, lazy young assholes. They are mostly nice though, maybe, I guess, fuck me if I know anything.

Name and shame some of the film people, contemporary or otherwise, that have been influences on your cinematic aesthetics.

The one I most identify with and love, and is most inspired by, is Jean Cocteau. His films are poetic pornos. It’s who I want to be when I grow up.

Other than him, I love Israeli actress Delphine Seyrig and American porn actress Jeanna Fine.

How do you relax after a difficult day of giving interviews for the glossies and mingling with the likes of moi?

I love taking long, loverly, leisurely dumps. And to bathe for hours, the bathroom is my favourite place in a home. I’m always collecting exquisite, scented soaps, rare shampoos and mysterious body washes and sponges and brushes and combs and other grooming tools. My daily bathroom ritual is a daily prayer that I will exit that steamy sanctuary as someone other than who I am, better, prettier, smarter, newer. I also cook everyday, I take care of my plants, I clean the house, I take pictures of dolls, I make things. But I can’t talk about those, Yatabazah does those and he will cut me.

Why is Jean Desses so under appreciated by his compatriots?

OMG newsflash, Greeks not supporting their talented ones. Ok, I’m in shock.

But seriously, no one with any real talent will waste their precious little time in Greece. It’s a dead zone. Doomed, damned, dirty and dumb. I wish a great big awesome dick-tator upon this land, to punchfuck the Greeks into shape, discipline and having work ethic. Πούτσο και ξύλο. Πούτσο και ξύλο. Can you tell I’m not a patriot?

Which statue would you kiss, for free?

I made violent love to an Oscar that a friend of mine won in 1969. That thing is really heavy, let me tell you.

Ένα παιδικό παραμύθι ή μια ταινία ενηλικίωσης; Τι είναι το ‘Μέσα στο Δάσος’; Νομίζω ότι είναι ένα υπαρξιακό παραμύθι για ενήλικες ή καλύτερα, για να κλέψω κάτι που έχει πει η Κάτια Γκουλιώνη: μια ταινία για παιδιά που δυστυχώς μπορούν να την παρακολουθήσουν μόνο ενήλικες. Τι σε οδήγησε στην χρήση της ψηφιακής φωτογραφική μηχανής για το γύρισμα της ταινίας; Ήταν ένα τυχαίο γεγονός. Ο Βαρδής (Μαρινάκης) είχε αγοράσει αυτή την κάμερα και γυρίζοντας από ένα ταξίδι του στο Μαρόκο, μας έδειξε κάποια βιντεάκια που είχε τραβήξει. Γοητεύτηκα τόσο πολύ από την εικόνα της που του την αγόρασα το ίδιο βράδυ και έφυγα την άλλη μέρα ταξίδι μαζί της. Στην συνέχεια όταν έκανα ρεπεράζ για την ταινία την είχα μαζί μου και τραβούσα με αυτήν. Πρόβαλα το υλικό και σιγά-σιγά κατάλαβα ότι αυτή ακριβώς είναι η εικόνα που ήθελα για την ταινία. Κάτι που να μοιάζει με ψηφιακό super-8, με έντονα χρώματα και βίαιες φόρμες. Σαν πίνακας φοβ ζωγραφικής. Πού ακριβώς θα τοποθετούσες την ταινία ανάμεσα στην λεπτή γραμμή του ντοκιμαντέρ και της μυθοπλασίας; Θα έλεγα ότι είναι μια ταινία μυθοπλασίας που χρησιμοποιεί μεθόδους από το ντοκιμαντέρ έτσι ώστε να αποφύγει τις σχηματοποιήσεις και να συναντήσει το απρόβλεπτο. Το μυαλό έχει την τάση πολλές φορές να σχηματοποιεί με βάση αυτά που ξέρει. Προσέγγισα την δραματουργία σαν ντοκιμαντέρ για να αποφύγω τα σχήματα. Το να φιλμάρεις χωρίς να ξέρεις τι θα κάνει ο ηθοποιός, σου δίνει μια εγρήγορση και μια διαφορετική επαφή με τις αισθήσεις σου. Οι γωνίες που διάλεγα και ο τρόπος που καθοδηγούσα έχουν μέσα τους και αυτές την διαμόρφωση μου βέβαια, όμως είναι λιγότερο φιλτραρισμένες, πιο κοντά στην αλήθεια μου, λιγότερο σχηματοποιημένες, πιο αυτόματες και το αναπάντεχο είναι εκεί. Είναι σαν να είσαι σε συνεχή διάλογο με αυτό που συμβαίνει χωρίς να προκαθορίζεις και να διαμορφώνεις. Πόσο άλλαξε το σενάριο μέσα από την συνεργασία με τους τρεις ηθοποιούς; Άλλαξε καθοριστικά. Ο Nathan, ο Ιάκωβος και η Κάτια είναι οι συνσεναριογράφοι της ταινίας. Όχι μόνο γιατί οι χαρακτήρες μπολιάστηκαν από τα βιώματα και τους χαρακτήρες τους, αλλά και γιατί ολόκληρο το γύρισμα βασίστηκε πάνω στην δική τους ερμηνεία και αποτύπωση της ιστορίας. Χωρίς την δική τους επινοητικότητα, τόλμη, φαντασία και αισθαντικότητα, η ταινία δεν θα ήταν τίποτε. Τους χρωστώ τα πάντα.

Πόσο από τον εαυτό σας βάλατε μέσα στο σενάριο του ‘Μέσα Στο Δάσος’; Κάτια Γκουλιώνη: Όταν διάβασα το σενάριο, υπήρχε η αρχική χαρακτηριοδομή από τον σκηνοθέτη. Κατά την διάρκεια των προβών, δημιουργήθηκε ένας καινούριος συνδυασμός των δικών μας στοιχείων και των αρχικών. Όπως όταν βλέπεις μια φωτογραφία δεν μπορείς να καταλάβεις εάν η έκφραση κάποιου είναι πραγματική ή ένας στιγμιαίος ρόλος που υποδύεται. Όταν ξεκίνησαν τα γυρίσματα, το δάσος έγινε πρωταγωνιστής γιατί μάλλον δεν το απασχόλησε η χαρακτηριοδομή ούτε οι συνδυασμοί. Ιάκωβος Καμχής: Κατά την διάρκεια των προβών χρησιμοποίησα περιοχές της μνήμης μου που έβλεπα πρώτη φορά. Έβαλα λοιπόν όλον μου τον εαυτό, από όλη μου τη ζωή. Ενώ, αντίθετα, κατά τη διάρκεια των γυρισμάτων αφαίρεσα μεγάλα δικά μου κομμάτια για να βρει ο ρόλος το δικό του χαρακτήρα, να έχει δική του αντίληψη και να μην είναι κατευθυνόμενος από εμένα. Να έχει δικό του αυθορμητισμό για να μην αυτοσχεδιάζω εγώ συνεχώς.

Nathan Pissoort: Πολύ! Τα γυρίσματα είχαν έντονο ρυθμό, μπήκαν πολλά στοιχεία του εαυτού μας στην οθόνη. Η δουλειά βασίζεται σε ένα μεγάλο ποσοστό σ’αυτό που συνεισφέρουν οι ηθοποιοί μαζί με τον σκηνοθέτη για την δημιουργία των ρόλων αλλά και στην συνεργασία μαζί τους και τον αυτοσχεδιασμό. Σας φόβισαν οι τολμηρές σκηνές της ταινίας; Κ.Γ.: Η σεξουαλική πράξη απεικονίζει τις ανθρώπινες αρετές αλλά και τα ελαττώματα. Αυτό όμως που καθιστά εξαιρετικές αυτές τις απεικονίσεις δίνοντάς τους μια εκπληκτική δύναμη είναι η ελευθερία που ο Άγγελος καταφέρνει να δώσει λες και πρόκειται για παραισθήσεις που έχουν ξεφύγει από την επιτήρηση του εγώ. Έχω αρετές αλλά και ελαττώματα. Ι.Κ.: Όταν διάβασα το σενάριο του Άγγελου πάνω στο οποίο βασίστηκε η ιστορία που δημιουργήσαμε όλοι μαζί, οι ερωτικές σκηνές μου φάνηκαν όλες τόσο όμορφες, βαθιά ερεθιστικές και συγκινητικές που σκέφτηκα ότι θα ήθελα να παίξω ακόμη και τον ρόλο της Μέλοντι.

N.P.: Προσωπικά όχι. Μου αρέσει να κυκλοφορώ γυμνός... Λειτούργησα με μεγάλη εμπιστοσύνη προς τον Άγγελο. Πως θα περιγράφατε με μία λέξη την εμπειρία του γυρίσματος της ταινίας; K.Γ.: Εμπειρία. Ι.Κ.: Ενηλικίωση. Ν.P.: Πρόκληση.

What would be the one sentence to describe ‘In The Woods’?

I would say that it is a film about the religiousness of desire.

Is it a children’s fairytale or a film about adulthood? What exactly is ‘In The Woods’?

I think it is an existential fairytale for adults or, to quote a phrase by Katia Goulioni: ‘a children’s film that unfortunately can only be seen by adults.’

What led you into using a digital camera for shooting?

It was a coincidence. Vardis (Marinakis) owned this camera and after returning from a journey in Morocco, he showed me a few of his videos. I was so charmed by it that I ended up buying it that very night and the following day I went travelling taking the camera with me. Later on, during the film research, I was shooting with it. When I saw the finished material I begun to realise that it produced the kind of image I was looking for. A bit of digital super-8 in bright colours and violent forms. Just like a fauve painting.

Would you say that the film lies somewhere in the thin line between a documentary and fiction?

I would say that it is a fiction film using documentary methods in order to avoid the norm and meet the unexpected. The mind has a tendency to shape according to its knowledge. My approach to drama was through the documentary in order to avoid shaping. Filming without knowing what the actor will do next allows you to be alert and have a different touch with your own senses. Of course when it comes to choosing angles and my leading style, these are all expressions of my views but are less filtered, closer to my truth, less shaped, more automatic, still carrying the unexpected. It is like being in a constant dialogue with the situation without defaults and preconceptions.

How far did the story change through your collaboration with the three actors?

It changed dramatically. Nathan, Iakovos and Katia are the film’s co-writers. Not only due to the fact that the characters were crafted by their own experiences and personalities but also because the whole shooting was based on their interpretation and depiction of the story. Without their creativity, boldness, imagination and sensibility the film would be nothing. I owe them everything.

How much of your own selves did you invest in the story?

Katia Goulioni: The initial character line was set by the director in the script.

During rehearsals a new bond between our own elements and the initial ones was created. It is like when you see a photograph of a person and it’s hard to understand whether it is a genuine expression or an instant role. When we started shooting, the forest became the true protagonist since, I guess, it is beyond characters or bonds.

Iakovos Kamchis: During rehearsal I accessed areas of my memory unknown to me until then; the whole of me took part. While during shooting, I removed myself from the character and let the role find its own perspective, let him have his own perception and not be directed by me. Let him be spontaneous so that I don’t need to constantly improvise.

Nathan Pissoort: A lot of myself! Shooting was intense, there were many elements of ourselves on screen. The result is based, to main extend, to what the actors together with the director are contributing in order to create the characters but also in their quality of collaboration and improvisation.

Did you feel intimidated by the erotic scenes?

K.G.: The sexual act reflects both human qualities and faults. What makes these sensual illustrations absolutely exceptional in the film, is the great power and freedom given to them by the director, as if they were illusions escaping from his surveillance. As far as I am concerned, I have virtues as well as defects.

I.K.: When I first read the script, the one which the story we all created was based on, I was impressed with the erotic scenes. They seemed very beautiful, deeply erotic and touching that I even wanted to play Melody’s role too.

N.P.: Personally no. I enjoy going around naked and I trusted Angelos’ guidance.

How would you describe the experience of shooting in one word?

K.G.: Experience.

I.K.: Adulthood.

N.P.: Challenge.

‘In The Woods’ made its official nationwide premiere at the 16th Athens International Film Festival and will be released in theaters on September 30.

Μία δημοσιογράφος και ένας μουσικός. Της αρέσει να γράφει παραμύθια και του αρέσει να φωτογραφίζει. Η Μελίτα Κάραλη και ο Νίκος Πατρελάκης είναι δύο άνθρωποι που υποστηρίζουν ότι γνωρίζονται από πάντα και δεν μπορούν να θυμηθούν πότε ακριβώς αποφάσισαν να γίνουν ‘ομάδα’. Το καινούργιο τους πρότζεκτ το Doc TV είναι μία ιντερνετική τηλεόραση, είναι ένα περιοδικό με βίντεο, είναι καθημερινές ιστορίες, είναι αυτοί οι δύο μαζί.

A journalist and a musician. She likes writing faitytales, he likes taking pictures. Melita Karali and Nikko Patrelakis believe they have known each other since forever and they cannot quite recall when they first decided to become a ‘team’. Doc TV, their most recent project, is a web tv, a magazine with videos, everyday stories but above all is those two together. Πώς γνωριστήκατε και πώς καταλήξατε στη συνεργασία του Doc TV; Γνωριζόμαστε από τον προηγούμενο αιώνα, τόσο που δεν θυμόμαστε πως ήταν το πριν. Τα πρότζεκτ είναι τα παιχνίδια που μοιραζόμαστε –με 375 ηλιοβασιλέματα και χίλιους καυγάδες ημερησίως. Έχουμε συνεργαστεί για τηλεόραση, διαφήμιση, ραδιόφωνο, μουσικές, έντυπα, πάρτι, βιντεοκλίπ. Το Doc TV είναι όλα αυτά μαζί. Από που ξεκίνησαν όλα; Από την πρώτη high definition κάμερα που μας έκλεψαν πριν τρία χρόνια. Βρισκόμασταν στις Κυκλάδες και δοκιμάζαμε διάφορες τεχνικές, υποβρύχια, εναέρια κλπ. κι όταν χάσαμε την κάμερα καταλάβαμε ότι έπρεπε να την αντικαταστήσουμε το γρηγορότερο δυνατόν. Δεν το είδαμε σαν ένα δυσοίωνο ‘αντί-καρμικό’ σημάδι, αντιθέτως μουλαρώσαμε. Πώς εμπνευστήκατε για τη δημιουργία του Doc TV; Γιατί ένα web tv; Δεν διαλέξαμε εμείς να κάνουμε ένα web tv, τα υλικά μας το διάλεξαν. Δεν είναι τυχαίο ότι δεν βλέπουμε και πολύ τηλεόραση εδώ και χρόνια, οπότε έχουμε απελευθερωθεί από τα τηλεοπτικά μας αντανακλαστικά. Διαπιστώσαμε λοιπόν πως ό,τι κι αν γυρίζαμε –doc, ρεπορτάζ, video art, βλακείες –προοριζόντουσαν για μια τελείως διαφορετική χρήση. Για ποιο λόγο επιλέγετε αυτή τη χρονική περίοδο για τη πραγματοποίηση του; Κάποια πράγματα ολοκληρώνουν τον κύκλο, αλλά συνεχίζουν να κυνηγούν την ουρά τους. Όλοι δεν νιώθουμε ότι βρισκόμαστε σε μια στροφή του χρόνου; Λένε ότι δεν είναι ιδανική ώρα για όνειρα, εμείς πιστεύουμε ότι είναι η σωστότερη για να τα πραγματοποιήσεις. Πάντως δεν επιλέξαμε τη χρονική στιγμή, έπρεπε να το κάνουμε, ξυπνούσαμε το πρωί και ήταν το μόνο που θέλαμε. Η βασική ομάδα των docers, δέκα άτομα περίπου, εργαστήκαμε μαθαίνοντας εντατικά νέες τεχνολογίες και τεχνικές. Δουλέψαμε από το περίσσευμα του χρόνου, του ύπνου, των πόρων μας, κουνώντας τις ουρές μας από την χαρά. Θα μπορούσατε να μας περιγράψετε αυτή τη δημιουργία σας; Τι θα παρουσιάζετε; Το μότο μας είναι documenting everyday life. Καταγράφουμε την καθημερινότητα με την ψυχρή μας υποκειμενικότητα. Έχουμε αρχίσει το pre-posting στη σελίδα μας doctv.gr και οποιοσδήποτε μπορεί να μπει και να πάρει μια ιδέα. Τι προσδοκίες έχετε; Να διατυπώσουμε μια νέα ‘γλώσσα’. Να παράγουμε θεματολογία που ο χρήστης θα θελήσει να μοιραστεί. Να παράγουμε εικόνα υψηλής ευκρίνειας. Να δημιουργούμε ανθρώπινα θέματα. Να έρθουν κι άλλοι, που θα θέλουν να μοιραστούν ιδέες στην ‘πλατφόρμα’ μας. Αυτά θα είναι παραπάνω από πολύ για εμάς. Οι συνεργάτες σας… Στην πορεία προστέθηκαν φίλοι και φίλοι φίλων από το χώρο των μίντια,

των τεχνών, της τεχνολογίας... Πάντως, όπως θα δείτε, δεν πιστεύουμε καθόλου στο ιντερνετικό DIY άλλοθι, γι’ αυτό πολύτιμοι συνοδοιπόροι μας είναι οι Poor Designers (design) και οι Nitorsys (engineering) δυο εταιρίες με τις οποίες λειτουργούμε ως συγκοινωνούντα δοχεία. Έχετε κάποια προσωπικά σχέδια για το μέλλον; Θα ερωτευτούμε. Θα αναθρέψουμε τις έντεκα γάτες στην αυλή του Doc TV. Θα κάνουμε μαζί ένα μη βιογραφικό ντοκιμαντέρ για τη Μαλβίνα. Ο Νίκος γράφει μουσική γιατί δεν μπορεί αλλιώς, εγώ γράφω παραμύθια γιατί χρειάζομαι τον σουρεαλισμό. Το τεύχος μας έχει τίτλο Back to Life, εσείς που θα θέλατε να γυρίσετε; Σε μια ζωή που έχει ως αξία τον ανθρωπισμό. Οπότε ίσως στο μέλλον; Όλα τα άλλα είναι μαλακίες.

When did you two meet and how come you ended up collaborating in Doc TV? We know each other since the previous century as far back as we cannot remember. Our projects are the games we share -with 375 sunsets and a thousand quarrels daily. In the past we worked together for tv, advertising, radio, music, press, parties, music videos. Doc is all these together.

When did it all start?

From the moment somebody stole our high definition camera three years ago.

We were in the Cyclades trying out new techniques -underwater, air shots etc.- and when we lost the camera we realised that it had to be replaced as soon as possible. We didn’t see this a sign of bad karma, it just made us more determined.

What inspired you into creating Doc TV? Why a web tv?

We didn’t choose to do a web tv, the material chose it. It is not coincidental that in the recent years, we don’t watch too much tv and so we are liberated from our television reflexes. We discovered therefore that the material we filmed -documentary, reportage, video art, silly things- were destined for a completely different use.

Is there a reason you chose this timing for launching it?

Some things complete their circle but they keep on chasing their tails. We all feel hanging on the turning of time, don’t we? Some say the times are bad for dreaming, we believe this is the best time to make dreams true. We didn’t choose the time, it just had to be done; we would wake up in the morning thinking of nothing else. The basic team of dockers, almost ten people, worked hard learning new technologies and methods. We dedicated our spare time, our sleep and resources waging our tails in joy.

Could you describe what you will be presenting?

Our motto is ‘documenting everyday life’. We are looking at and documenting everyday reality with our cool subjectivity. Pre-posting has begun on our web-page doctv.gr and anyone could visit and take a look.

What are your aims?

To formulate a new ‘language’. To produce topics that the user wants to share.

To produce high resolution image. To aim for ‘human’ subjects. To allow for others, who want to share ideas, join our platform. These will be more than enough to us.

Your partners…

In the course of time more friends and friends of friends were added; people from the world of media, the arts and technology. As you will see for yourself we don’t believe in internet DIY excuses and so our valuable collaborators include Poor Designers (design) and Nitorsys (engineering). Two companies with which we work like communicating vessels.

Have you got any personal plans for the future?

We plan to fall in love. To raise eleven cats in doctv’s back yard. We want to do a non-biographical documentary for Malvina. Nikos will keep on writing music because he knows no other way. I will keep on writing fairytales because I need the surreal.

Our issue is titled Back to Life, where would you like to go back to?

In a life were humanity is valued. So maybe in the future? Everything else is bullshit.

Our band is never gonna be exactly one way for too long. Από την ίδρυσή τους το 2007, οι Vivian Girls έχουν καταφέρει πολλά σε μικρό χρονικό διάστημα. Η περσινή τους επιτυχία, ‘Everything Goes Wrong’, κατάφερε να τις ωθήσει παγκοσμίως και ήταν η απόδειξη ότι τα κορίτσια είχαν όραμα αλλά και θάρρος. Η Cassie Ramone (κιθάρα/φωνητικά), μιλά στο OZON για το συγκρότημά της, το Μπρούκλιν και την εμμονή της για το βινύλιο.

Since their formation in 2007, the Vivian Girls have clearly achieved too much in a very small amount of time. Last year’s ‘Everything Goes Wrong’ helped propel them to universal acceptance and showed the girls had both vision and guts to stay.

Cassie Ramone (guitar/vocals) speaks to OZON about her band, Brooklyn and vinyl obsessions. Αρχικά ξεκινήσατε με τη φιλοδοξία να γίνετε πολύ γνωστές ή απλώς αυτό προέκυψε; Ξεκινήσαμε για πλάκα αλλά ταυτόχρονα ό,τι κάναμε, το κάναμε σοβαρά. Δεν είχαμε ιδιαίτερα μεγάλες προσδοκίες, μας αρκούσε το να παίζουμε σε live, να κάνουμε περιοδείες και φυσικά δίσκους. Το γεγονός ότι καταφέραμε πολλά περισσότερα είναι καταπληκτικό, αλλά τίποτα περισσότερο από ένα μπόνους. Έχετε κάνει συναυλίες σε Ευρώπη, Αυστραλία, Ασία, κ.α. Έχετε αισθανθεί ποτέ ότι έχετε αποσυνδεθεί από τους βασικούς σας fans πίσω στη χώρα σας; Έχουμε σίγουρα αισθανθεί μακριά από τους φίλους και την οικογένειά μας, αλλά είναι μεγάλη τιμή να παίζουμε σε τόσα πολλά μέρη που πραγματικά δεν πειράζει. Το ‘Everything Goes Wrong’ , επέδειξε ένα πλουσιότερο ήχο και παραγωγή σε σύγκριση με το ντεμπούτο σας. Πιστεύετε ότι σαν συγκρότημα, έχετε σαφέστερη εικόνα του πώς επιθυμείτε τον ήχο σας; Νομίζω ότι όσο μεγαλώνουμε σαν συγκρότημα, τόσο πιο ξεκάθαρη ιδέα έχουμε. Στην αρχή δεν μας ένοιαζε καθόλου η παραγωγή αλλά όσο περνάει ο καιρός μας ενδιαφέρει όλο και περισσότερο. Πιστεύω ότι στο μέλλον θα τελειοποιήσουμε τον ήχο μας ακόμη περισσότερο. Επιπλέον οι ιδέες μας διαρκώς εξελίσσονται - το συγκρότημα μας δεν μένει ποτέ το ίδιο για πολύ καιρό. Είναι πλέον η μουσική η καθημερινή σας απασχόληση; Δουλεύετε επαγγελματικά και πειθαρχημένα; Απολύτως, αλλά γενικά θέλουμε πάντα να έχουμε μια χαλαρή, rockfeel αίσθηση σ’αυτά που

κάνουμε. Έχουμε πάρει στα σοβαρά τη μουσική καριέρα μας αλλά δεν θέλουμε να καταλήξουμε ρομπότ πάνω στη σκηνή. Μαζί με μπάντες όπως οι Crystal Stilts, Cause Co-Motion! και οι The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, νιώθετε πως εκπροσωπείτε και αποτελείτε μια νέα μουσική σκηνή στη Νέα Υόρκη; Τελικά ο καθένας εκεί έχει από ένα συγκρότημα; Κατά κάποιο τρόπο. Ωστόσο, υπάρχουν πολλά καταπληκτικά συγκροτήματα από τη Νέα Υόρκη που δεν τραβάνε την προσοχή των μέσων ενημέρωσης και που είναι εξίσου ζωτικής σημασίας για τη σκηνή. Δεν είναι ότι ο καθένας έχει από μια μπάντα, αλλά λίγο πολύ όλοι εμπλέκονται με κάποιο τρόπο - από την οργάνωση των σώους μέχρι την δημιουργική προώθηση τους. Ο ένας βοηθά τον άλλον με κάποιο τρόπο κάνοντας τη μουσική σκηνή να είναι πραγματικά ξεχωριστή. Η Wild World Records, η δισκογραφική εταιρία που έχετε ιδρύσει, έχει μέχρι τώρα κυκλοφορήσει μόνο επτά-ιντσα. Σχεδιάζετε να κάνετε κάποιο full-length άλμπουμ; H αλήθεια είναι πως έχουμε κυκλοφορήσει δύο full-length άλμπουμς μέχρι τώρα - μια συλλογή από κομμάτια των Yellow Fever καθώς και όλες τις ηχογραφήσεις της παλιάς μου μπάντας Bossy. Αυτή τη στιγμή δεν έχουμε αρκετό χρόνο για να αφιερώσουμε στην εταιρία, αλλά ελπίζουμε ότι στο μέλλον θα κάνουμε πολλές περισσότερες κυκλοφορίες από μπάντες που αγαπάμε - LP και επτά-ιντσα.

Νομίζετε ότι το μουσικόφιλο κοινό θα έπρεπε να αγοράζει βινύλια παρά CD; Σίγουρα. Κατά τη γνώμη μου, τα CD μπορούν πλέον να αντικατασταθούν από το ψηφιακό downloading. Από την άλλη το βινύλιο είναι πιο όμορφο σαν αντικείμενο και ο ήχος του ακούγεται θερμότερος και πιο μαλακός. Βέβαια ο καθένας είναι ελεύθερος να κάνει ό,τι θέλει. Κάποιες σκέψεις σχετικά με το ATP φεστιβάλ που θα παίξετε το Σεπτέμβριο και που την επιμέλεια έχει αναλάβει ο Jim Jarmusch; Είμαστε πολύ ενθουσιασμένες. Θέλαμε εδώ και χρόνια να παίξουμε στο ATP και είμαστε πραγματικά χαρούμενες που επιτέλους θα το καταφέρουμε! Επίσης, οι υπόλοιποι μουσικοί είναι εκπληκτικοί. Πώς μπορείτε να συνδυάσετε την άγρια ενέργεια της μουσικής σας με τη μελωδική ευαισθησία των φωνητικών σας; Ακούς άλλους πανκ ή ποπ καλλιτέχνες; Χωρίς αμφιβολία και τα δυο. Οι δυο μουσικοί μου ήρωες είναι ο Burt Bacharach και ο Greg Sage των Wipers, παρότι μοιάζουν τελείως διαφορετικοί. Πιστεύω πως όταν ακούς και τους δυο για καιρό, αρχίζεις να αντιλαμβάνεσαι τις ομοιότητες στον ήχο τους. Και οι δυο είναι μεγάλοι δημιουργοί απίστευτα θλιβερής μουσικής που καταφέρνει να είναι ταυτόχρονα μελωδική και ελπιδοφόρα. Ποιές είναι οι αγαπημένες σου μπάντες αυτές τις μέρες; Τελευταία έχω εμμονή με τους Steely Dan. Ένα από τα καλύτερα νέα συγκροτήματα από το Μπρούκλιν είναι οι Dutch Treat, ακούγονται λίγο σαν τους Fleetwood Mac και γράφουν πολύ καλά τραγούδια.

In the beginning, did you have any aspirations of becoming a well-known band or was it just for fun?

It was just for fun, but at the same time we were very serious about what we did. We had no greater aspirations than to play fun shows, tour, and put out records. The fact that we’ve been able to do more than that has been amazing but nothing more than a total bonus.

Given the fact that you do concerts in Europe, Australia, Asia etc., have you ever felt disconnected from your fanbase back at home?

We’ve definitely felt disconnected from our friends and family, but it’s been such an honour getting to play in so many places that it doesn’t really matter.

‘Everything Goes Wrong’ showcased a much fuller sound and richer production comparing to your debut. Do you think you have a clearer view on how your band should sound?

I think the older our band gets, the clearer of an idea we have. At the beginning we didn’t really care about production at all - as time goes on we care more about it. I think that on our future albums we’ll fine-tune our sound even more. Plus, our ideas are always evolving - our band is never gonna be exactly one way for too long.

Do you consider playing music your day job right now? Do you feel more professional or disciplined?

Absolutely, but overall we still want to have a loose, fun garage rockfeel. We’ve gotten really serious about making music our career, but we aren’t trying to be robots onstage.

Along with bands like Crystal Stilts, Cause Co-Motion! and The Pains Of

Being Pure At Heart, do you feel like representing and ultimately forming a sort of a ‘music scene’ in New York? Does everyone there have a band?

In a way. However, there are plenty of amazing bands from New York that aren’t getting as much media attention, that are just as vital to the scene as the bands you mentioned. Not everyone has a band, but pretty much everyone is involved in some way - from booking shows to working at shows, from making art to promoting. Everyone helps each other out in some way, and as a result the scene is really special.

You’ve started running Wild World Records. The label is releasing only 7’’ so far. Any plans of releasing full-length albums through this company?

We actually have released 2 full-length albums - Yellow Fever’s singles compilation and my old band Bossy’s complete recordings. Basically, we don’t have enough time at the moment to fully focus on being a record label, but we’re hoping in the future we can do many more releases from bands we love - either LP or 7”.

Do you think that more people should prefer buying vinyls other than CDs? Sure. In my opinion, CDs are pretty much obsolete due to digital downloading, and vinyl is more beautiful and way less disposable. Also, vinyl sounds a lot warmer and less harsh. But in the end, people can do whatever they want.

Any thoughts on the Jim Jarmuschcurated ATP festival you’re confirmed to play in September?

We’re all extremely excited. We’ve wanted to play ATP for years now, and we’re so happy we finally get to play one! Also, the other artists on the bill are amazing.

How do you combine the ferocious energy of your music with the melodic sensibility of your vocal parts? Are you more punk or more pop oriented in the artists you love?

Absolutely split evenly between both. My two musical heroes are Burt Bacharach and the Wipers’ Greg Sage - and even though they seem to be totally different. I think that if you listened to both artists for long enough you’d be able to see the similarities in their sounds. They’re both masters of creating incredibly sad music, but at the same time melodic and hopeful.

Got any new favorite bands these days?

I’ve been obsessed with Steely Dan lately. One of the best new bands from Brooklyn is Dutch Treat.

They sound kinda like Fleetwood Mac, and they write great songs.

Over a phone chat with Spilios Gianakopoulos, Fischerspooner’s set designer, and OZON contributor, Casey reveals, just a few days before his DJ set on the REWORKS festival 2010 in Thessaloniki, his plan to run at the Kalimarmaro Stadium of Athens until he collapses.

Γεια σου Janet. Γειά σου και σένα Χωριάτικη Σαλάτα. Πώς ξεκίνησαν τα ψευδώνυμα; Δεν ξέρω. Πάντοτε φτιάχναμε τρελά ψευδώνυμα για όλους και έχουμε διαφορετικά για κάθε εποχή. Ο Adam (Dugas) ξεκίνησε το Janet, έτσι φώναζε την Magic, την τυφλή μου γάτα όταν εκείνη είχε τα νεύρα της. Πιθανώς μια αναφορά στη Janet Jackson; Δεν νομίζω αλλά μπορεί να ερμηνευτεί με διάφορους τρόπους: Βρισκόσαστε στην περιοδεία του ‘Between Worlds Tour’ από τον Απρίλιο του 2009. Πώς ο δρόμος επηρέασε το μανιφέστο σας; Η παράσταση εξελίσσεται όσες φορές παίζεται. Είναι οργανωμένη έτσι ώστε όσο περισσότερο παίζουμε, τόσο περισσότερο δημιουργούμε καινούργια επίπεδα με τα οποία επανατροφοδοτούμε το σόου. Για παράδειγμα, υπάρχει μια στιγμή στο ‘Sweetness’ που σταματώ και διακόπτω την εκτέλεση.Στην πρώτη μας παράσταση στην Πολωνία το καλοκαίρι του 2008, σε μια επεισοδιακή πρόβα όπου ηχογραφήθηκαν τα πάντα, ο μουσικός μας διευθυντής Ian (Pai) πήρε ένα κομμάτι από μένα να ‘τα σπάω’ στη σκηνή και το έβαλε στο σόου. Αυτό που κάνουμε δηλαδή είναι να τραβάμε σκηνές ή τμήματα από την performance και να τα προβάλουμε στo επόμενο σόου. Πώς συνδέονται τα DJ sets σας με τα live σας; Δεν υπάρχει απευθείας συσχετισμός. Θέλω να πω ότι τα DJ sets είναι ένας εύκολος και ευχάριστος τρόπος να παίζεις τη μουσική που σου αρέσει και να περνάς καλά. Κατά κάποιον περίεργο τρόπο καταφέρνεις να επισκέπτεσαι την Ελλάδα κάθε καλοκαίρι. Το ξέρω, είναι τρελό! Τι είναι αυτό που σε ξαναφέρνει; Δεν ξέρω… Ίσως το πεπρωμένο. Τι θυμάσαι περισσότερο από την Ελλάδα; Τα ψώνια στην Πλάκα για τα αγαπημένα μου φολκλορικά κουστούμια. Θυμάμαι ακόμα το ταξίδι στην Ύδρα, που θέλω να ξαναπάω. Με ξετρελαίνουν τα πλοία, είχα πάρει ένα για τη Νίσυρο νομίζω. Ακριβώς, και εκεί πέρασες δύο ολόκληρες εβδομάδες. Ναι, δύο εβδομάδες στη Νίσυρο το 2007. ... που με φέρνει στο επόμενο θέμα. Πρέπει επισήμως να αποκαταστήσουμε την αλήθεια σχετικά με μια βραδυνή σου περιπέτεια στην Αθήνα μαζί με τον Terence Koh και τον Bernhard Willhelm.

OMG! Φυσικά! Το είχα ξεχάσει! Βρεθήκαμε τυχαία στην Αθήνα με τον Terence Koh και τον Bernhard Willhelm όταν αυτοί ετοίμαζαν ένα έργο για την Μπιενάλε. Βρήκαμε έξω για φαγητό και τα λέγαμε. Ο Bernhard ήθελε να γυρίσει ένα βίντεο και είχε μαζί του διάφορα κοστούμια και έναν καμεραμάν. Εγώ είχα μαζί μου τους χορευτές και ξετρελάθηκα με την ιδέα των γυρισμάτων. Είχαμε ήδη χρησιμοποιήσει ένα ελληνικό άγαλμα, τον Μονομάχο του Borghese, σαν βάση της χορογραφίας του ‘Just Let Go’ και

με ιντρίγκαρε η ιδέα να τραβήξουμε πλάνα μπροστά σε ιστορικά σημεία της πόλης ντυμένοι με ρούχα του Bernhard Willhelm. Μερικές από τις ιδέες του ‘Just Let Go’ ήταν εμπνευσμένες από το Γάλλο που επανέφερε τους Ολυμπιακούς τον 19ο αιώνα. Τον Pierre de Coubertin. Ναι! Πάντα με εντυπωσίαζε το Καλλιμάρμαρο και πρότεινα να κάνουμε τα γυρίσματα εκεί. Φορέσαμε όλοι κοστούμια με σκοπό να χορέψουμε στο στάδιο, αλλά την τελευταία στιγμή μας έκανε έφοδο ο επιστάτης. Πάνω εκεί μια από τις χορεύτριες στραμπούλιξε το πόδι της και κατέληξε στο νοσοκομείο, οπότε χάσαμε και τους χορευτές. Εμάς μας κυνήγησε ο επιστάτης και ενώ καταφέραμε να μπούμε σε ένα λεωφορείο, αυτός το σταμάτησε και έφερε την αστυνομία. Τότε σκέφτηκα ότι θα καταλήγαμε στη φυλακή και πράγματι ο Bernhard, ο Terence κι εγώ είμασταν αυτοί που βρεθήκαμε στο αστυνομικό τμήμα. Ήταν τόσο βαρετά, περιμέναμε ατελείωτες ώρες ώσπου να εμφανιστεί ο διευθυντής της Μπιενάλε, ο tour μάνατζερ μας και εσύ για να μας βγάλετε από εκεί. Ακριβώς! Τότε είχες σκεφτεί και μια ‘κάθαρση’. Υπήρξε μια στιγμή όταν τραβούσαμε το βίντεο που απογειώθηκα τρέχοντας, ένιωθα εκπληκτικά. Έτσι πρότεινα στην Μπιενάλε να κάνω μια περφόρμανς όπου τρέχω γύρω-γύρω στο Καλλιμάρμαρο μέχρι τελικής πτώσεως. Γιατί πάντα οι ιδέες μου για παραστάσεις κινούνται γύρω από θέματα αποτυχίας και κατάρρευσης; Ίσως η αποτυχία σε ιντριγκάρει αλλά και ταυτόχρονα σε τρομάζει. Ίσως… το σίγουρο είναι ότι μ’ αρέσει! Είναι μήπως αυτό που διαρκώς σε εμπνέει και σου δίνει όρεξη για εξέλιξη και επαναπροσδιορισμό; Μόλις συνειδητοποίησα ότι είχα μια άλλη ιδέα που θα μπορούσε να συνδεθεί. Να τρέχω σε κύκλους στο Καλλιμάρμαρο και ένας μεγάλος προβολέας να με ακολουθεί. Δεν μου φαίνεται καθόλου άσχημη η ιδέα σου. Γίνεται ακόμα η Μπιενάλε στην Αθήνα; Η επόμενη είναι προγραμματισμένη για το 2011. Τέλεια! Ίσως διαβάσουν αυτή τη συνέντευξη και καταλήξω να τρέχω κυκλικά. Τι κάνεις τώρα; Απόψε είμαι στο Μοντρεάλ σε περιοδεία με το καινούργιο άλμπουμ ‘Adult Contemporary’ ανοίγοντας για τους Scissor Sisters. Η όλη περιοδεία έγινε τόσο γρήγορα και δεν πρόλαβα να προετοιμαστώ κατάλληλα με αποτέλεσμα να αποτύχω παταγωδώς την πρώτη βραδιά, ξεχνώντας τους στίχους στη σκηνή. Μετά έβαλα ακουστικό για να με καθοδηγεί και σήμερα ήταν η πρώτη φορά που δεν το χρειάστηκα. ‘Ηταν απελευθερωτική εμπειρία. Θα φοράς κοστούμια; Θα φοράω ένα σμόκιν σχεδιασμένο από τη Mary Katrantzou, προσαρμοσμένο από τον Timothy Everest. Θα υπάρχουν και διαμάντια!

How did nicknaming start?

I don’t know. We always made crazy nicknames for everyone and we just have different ones for different seasons. Adam (Dugas]) started Janet. When Magic, my blind cat would get in a bad mood he would call her Janet.

A reference to Janet Jackson?

No, I don’t think so, but it can have many interpretations.

You have been performing the ‘Between Worlds Tour’ since April 2009. How has the road modified your manifesto?

The show has really grown as it’s been performed. It is set up as a system where the more we perform the more we create layers and different strata and we keep putting the show back into itself. There is the moment in ‘Sweetness’ where I stop and interrupt the performance and that is actually a recording of a rehearsal. The first performance we did of the show was in Poland in the summer of 2008. At the very rocky dress rehearsal they recorded everything and Ian (Pai), our musical director, took that recording of me really having a freak out on stage and added it into the show. We keep taking footage, different things that happened to us while performing and put it into the show about performance.

How are your DJ sets linked to your live shows?

There is no real direct relationship. I mean, that’s more just fun and easy. Just going and playing music that we are into and having a good time.

Someway or another, you manage to visit Greece almost every summer.

I know! Crazy!

What brings you back?

I don’t know… Destiny.

What are your most font memories of Greece?

Shopping in Plaka for folklore costumes I like. I had a nice trip to Hydra once. I’d like to go back. I love boats! Where did I take a boat to? I think Nisiros.

Right! Where you spent two whole weeks.

Yes, two weeks in Nisiros. That was in 2007.

Which makes me think we should now officially set the record straight about that night of Athenian adventure, which included Terence Koh and Bernhard Willhelm.

OMG! That’s right! I forgot about that. I ran into Terence Koh and Bernhard Willhelm in Athens while getting ready for the Athens Biennial because they were going to do some artwork for it. We went out to dinner and started talking. Bernhard needed to shoot a video and had all these costumes with him and a cameraman. I was there with the dancers and I got really excited about shooting something. We had used a Greek sculpture, the Borghese Gladiator, as the basis for the choreography of ‘Just Let Go’ and I thought it would be cool if we wore Bernhard Willhelm and went to some

amazing historic place. Some of the ideas for ‘Just Let Go’ came from the Olympics and the French guy who brought the Olympics back in the 19th Century.

Pierre de Coubertin.

Yes! I always loved the Olympic stadium (Kallimarmaro) so I suggested we go and shoot there. We all got dressed in costumes and where going to dance in the stadium but the janitor came and busted us. One of the dancers punctured her foot and went to the hospital, so we lost the dancers. Then we got chased out by the janitor, got on a city bus and he flagged the bus down. The cops came and were kind of hot, so I thought we should go to jail.

Bernhard, Terence and me where the only ones that ended up at the jailhouse and they (cops) were not hot, it was boring. We had to sit there forever.

The director of the biennial, our tour manager and you came and bailed us out of jail.

Exactly! You had a catharsis planned.

There was a moment when shooting the video where I just took off running. It just felt good to run in that space. I had suggested to the Βiennial that I do a performance where I just run in a circle at the Kallimarmaro until I collapse. Why do I always come up with performance ideas about failure and collapse?

You are as intrigued as afraid of failure.

I guess so… but I love it!

That is what keeps you inspired and eager to adapt and redefine.

I just realise now that I have been thinking about this fitness idea and it is also related to it. But I was going to do it in the Kallimarmaro at night with a follow-spot so I would just run in circles and the follow spot will follow me around.

I think this is a plan you should go after.

Do they still do the Athens Biennial?

There is one planned for 2011.

Oh, good! Maybe they will read this interview and then I will be running in circles.

Where are you running to now?

Tonight I’m in Montreal, on tour opening for the Scissor Sisters with my new solo album ‘Adult Contemporary’. The whole tour happened so fast that I did not have time to rehearse or prepare for it. I failed the first show really spectacularly where I completely forgot lines. So I put the lead vocal track in my ear to queue me in the lyrics and the arrangements so I learn the songs. Tonight was the first time I turned off the in-ear, so I just performed the songs freely. It was a very liberating experience.

Are there costumes?

I will be wearing a tuxedo designed by Mary Katrantzou, tailored by Timothy Everest. There will be diamonds!

Ryan McNamara has been among the most promising talents of America. Promise fulfilled. So far his works have been presented and exhibited at Moma, Performa 09, the Whitney Biennal, Elizabeth Dee Gallery, Athens Biennal 2008 and so the list goes. From musicals to performances, and from politically disturbing photographs to open dance lessons at P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Centre, he has been pushing his own and our boundaries further and further. Τα έργα σου διαφέρουν τόσο ως προς το περιεχόμενο, όσο ως προς τα μέσα που χρησιμοποιείς. Υπάρχει κάποιο κοινό στοιχείο ή αξία που τα συνδέει; Δεν με ενδιαφέρει η δημιουργία συνδέσμων στα έργα μου. Οι παραστάσεις και τα βίντεο έχουν σχέση με το χώρο και τον τόπο που συμβαίνουν. Φυσικά με τον καιρό ανακαλύπτω διάφορα κοινά μονοπάτια που περνούν από επιμέρους έργα. Για παράδειγμα, θα ερευνώ ακούραστα τις ιδιαιτερότητες της κίνησης του ανθρώπινου σώματος. Με ποιους τρόπους λαμβάνεις υπ’ όψιν σου το υπαρκτό πλαίσιο μέσα στο όποιο θα πραγματοποιηθεί μια παράσταση ή τον χώρο που θα εκθέσεις έργα σου; Οι παραστάσεις είναι πολύ συγκεκριμένες. Πραγματοποιούνται από μια συγκεκριμένη ομάδα ανθρώπων, σε ένα συγκεκριμένο τόπο, μια συγκεκριμένη στιγμή. Αυτή η συγκεκριμενοποίηση θέτει περιορισμούς. Είναι σαν να ξεδιαλύνεις ένα παζλ, υπάρχουν ορισμένα προϋπάρχοντα στοιχεία -οι τοίχοι, οι καιρικές συνθήκες κτλ.- και εγώ δουλεύω γύρω από αυτά. Σε πολλές από τις παραστάσεις σου έχεις υιοθετήσει την αλληλεπίδραση, τη συμμετοχή του κοινού ακόμα και τον διάλογο πρόσωπο με πρόσωπο. Πόσο σημαντικό είναι αυτό στην τέχνη σου; Κατά τη διάρκεια μιας παράστασης τόσο το δικό μου όσο και το σώμα ενός θεατή, είναι το ίδιο παρόντα με αναλογία ένα προς ένα. Όταν βρισκόμαστε αντιμέτωποι με έναν άλλον άνθρωπο πρέπει να λάβουμε μια απόφαση για το πώς θα προχωρήσουμε μ’ αυτήν την επαφή. Μερικές φορές λέμε ‘γεια σου’, άλλες φορές αγκαλιαζόμαστε, κάνουμε νεύμα με το κεφάλι ή αποφεύγουμε οτιδήποτε και κοιτάμε προς την άλλη. Για μένα η ίδια διαδικασία συμβαίνει κατά τη δημιουργία της δουλειάς μου. Πώς αντιμετωπίζεις την αυτό-έκθεση στις παραστάσεις σου; Με κάποιου είδους μεταμφίεση; Αυτή η ερώτηση προϋποθέτει ότι υπάρχει ένας Ryan χωρίς μεταμφίεση, ένας αληθινός, αγνός εαυτός μου. Είμαστε πάντοτε μεταμφιεσμένοι. Είμαι μεταμφιεσμένος όταν απαντώ σε συνέντευξη και μεταμφιεσμένος κάνω παράσταση.

Στο ‘Introducing Ryan McNamara’ και στο ‘Make Ryan a Dancer’ εξέθεσες το κοινό σου σε μια μεγάλη δόση πραγματικότητας. Θα μπορούσε αυτή η προσέγγιση να θεωρηθεί υπό το φάσμα ενός κοινωνικού πειράματος ή ακόμη ενός reality show; Τα reality shows είναι πολύ πιο διασκεδαστικά απο το ‘Make Ryan a Dancer’. Έχουν πολύ καλούς συντάκτες. Πώς αντιλαμβάνεσαι το ‘σώμα’ στις παραστάσεις σου; Το σώμα είναι το σημείο συνάντησης πολλών αντικρουόμενων και περίπλοκων ενεργειών που κάνουν την εμφάνισή τους με τους πιο αινιγματικούς τρόπους. Στις παραστάσεις σου, συμπεριλαμβάνεις πολλά δημοφιλή στο ευρύτερο κοινό στοιχεία. Ποιοι είναι οι συσχετισμοί που θέλεις να πετύχεις; Στην επόμενη μου παράσταση έβαλα ένα κομμάτι της Rihanna που μ’ αρέσει, το ‘Rude Boy’. Το παίζει ο δάσκαλος του hip-hop στο ζέσταμα του ‘Make Ryan a Dancer’. Μια ζωντανή παράσταση είναι εφήμερη και επιδρά με συγκεκριμένο τρόπο. Όταν γίνεται βίντεο, με ποιο τρόπο όλα αυτά μετατρέπονται; Υπάρχει κάποια αλλαγή στο έργο από μόνο του; Έχω καταλάβει ότι ο καλύτερος τρόπος να χειριστώ ένα βίντεο-καταγραφή της παράστασης είναι να σταματήσω να προσπαθώ να αναπαράγω την εμπειρία που έζησαν οι θεατές. Τα βίντεο μου γίνονται όλο και περισσότερο αφηρημένα. Πώς επιδρά στην τέχνη σου η δυνατότητα να σοκάρεις; Πιστεύεις ότι οι δημιουργίες σου είναι συχνά παράξενες; Εκτιμώ την πρόκληση ενός σοκ και προσωπικά έχω ακόμα την ικανότητα να σοκάρομαι αλλά το σοκ μοιάζει με έναν φαύλο κύκλο για έναν καλλιτέχνη. Από την άλλη δεν με ενδιαφέρει να ανεβάσω τον πήχη, θέλω απλά να κάνω έργα που έχουν νόημα σε μια κατάσταση. Ο τίτλος του τεύχους μας είναι ‘Back to Life’. Ποια είναι τα πράγματα που θα ήθελες να επαναφέρεις στην τέχνη; Μια επανασύνδεση των τεχνών - κυρίως του διάλογου μεταξύ τέχνης και χορού. ‘Όπως ο Merce Cunningham και οι διάφοροι καλλιτέχνες-

συνεργάτες του είναι αντίστοιχες περιπτώσεις που μου έρχονται στο μυαλό.

Your works both in terms of content and media differ. Is there an element or a value that connects all your works?

I don’t set out to create links between my pieces.

The performances and videos are specific to the time and site. Of course over time, I have noticed threads that pass through the individual projects.

For one, I will never tire of exploring the bizarreness of the moving human body.

In what ways, if so, do you take into account the actual context of where you perform or show your art?

Performance is very specific. It is this group of people, at this particular location at this particular time. This specificity is one of the draws I have to this form. It’s like figuring out a puzzle. There are certain elements I’m stuck with - wall placement, weather, etc, and it’s my job to figure it out.

In many of your performances you have incorporated interaction, participation, even face to face dialogue. How important is that for your art making?

When doing performance, my body is as present as the body of an audience member. It’s a oneto-one ratio. When faced with another human, we must make a decision on how to proceed with that interaction. Sometimes we say ‘hello’, other times we embrace, give a slight head nod, or ignore and look the other way. I go through the same process when creating my work.

How do you experience self-exposure in your performances? Does it go along with some kind of disguise?

This question infers that there exists a true, pure Ryan, who is without disguise. We are always wearing a disguise. I wear one when I answer interview questions, I wear one when I am performing.

In ‘Introducing Ryan McNamara’ and in ‘Make Ryan a Dancer’ you exposed your audience to a big dose of reality. Could this approach be seen under the spectrum of a social experiment or even of a reality show?

Reality shows are a lot more entertaining than ‘Make Ryan a Dancer.’ They have really good editors.

I will never tire of exploring the bizarreness of the moving human body.

How do you perceive the Body in your performances?

The body is the meeting point of numerous conflicting entangled energies that expose themselves in the most peculiar ways.

You integrate many things from popular culture. What associations do you wish to make?

I really like this Rihanna song ‘Rude Boy’ that my ‘Make Ryan a Dancer’ hip-hop teacher plays as we warm up, so I put it in my next performance.

A live performance is ephemeral and has a certain affect. How is that transformed

when it becomes a video? Is there a shift in the piece itself?

I’ve come to realise that the best way to handle video documentation is to throw away any attempts to reproduce the narrative that the audience experienced at the performance. I’ve been making my performance documentation videos more and more abstract.

Does shock value matter to you when it comes to creating art? Do you feel your creations are often uncanny?

I appreciate shock value- I still very much have the ability to be shocked, but it seems like a scary

loop to get stuck in as an artist. I don’t want to ever feel like I have to up the ante. I just want to make projects that make the most sense for the situation.

What would you like to see reviving or even bring back to life yourself in today’s art?

A rejoining of the arts- especially more dialogue occurring between art and dance. Merce Cunningham and his many visual artist collaborators come to mind.

[enjoy your cities, but we belong to the fields] Η φωτογράφος Corinne Day πέθανε στο τέλος του Αυγούστου. Η Day αγαπούσε τις εικόνες που έμοιαζαν με την πραγματικότητα. Η ωμότητα μιας καθημερινότητας γεμάτης ματαιώσεις και η πλήξη μέσα σε ακατάστατα διαμερίσματα συνήθως προλόγιζε το πέρασμα στη φύση και ατελείωτες ονειροπολήσεις κάτω από δέντρα. Σήμερα που η νοσταλγία μιας εποχής περισσότερο κανονικής γίνεται όλο και πιο έντονη εκείνες οι φωτογραφίες μπορεί να είναι αυτό στο οποίο χρειάζεται να επιστρέψουμε. Και ίσως να αποτελούν μια κάποια λύση, τουλάχιστον για όσους αντέχουν να βλέπουν τα αστέρια να πέφτουν ξανά και ξανά.

At the end of August, the photographer Corinne Day died. Day’s favourite images portrayed reality; the brutal cancellations in everyday life and the boredom inside messy flats were only an introduction to nature, an endless daydreaming under the trees.

Now that the nostalgia of a pure era has become more intense, these photographs are something we come back to. They might even become providers of escape, at least for those who stand to watch the stars falling again and again.

Στα 80s η Vogue προτείνει το powerdressing. Βάτες, υπερβολικό ρουζ, μαλλιά με περμανάντ και είμαστε έτοιμοι να κατακτήσουμε τη μεγαλούπολη. Μια δεκαετία όπου στις σελίδες των μεγάλων περιοδικών μόδας όλοι ποζάρουν σαν επιτυχημένοι γιάπηδες. Το να φοράει κανείς σακάκι είναι αδιαμφισβήτητα καλό, το να φοράει ολόκληρο κοστούμι είναι ακόμα καλύτερο. Tο 1990 το ‘The Face’ εμπιστεύεται την αυτοδίδακτη Corinne Day και εκείνη επιλέγει τη δεκαπεντάχρονη Moss. Στο ‘The Third Summer Of Love’ η Corinne Day μεταμορφώνει το μοντέλο της σε πραγματικό κορίτσι παίζοντας με εκείνο το αμήχανο χαμόγελο που αποκαλύπτει μια σειρά από στραβά δόντια. In the 80s, Vogue gave the thumbs up to powerdressing. Shoulder pads, excessive blusher on the cheeks, permed hair is all we need to conquer the city. That was a decade when all you could find in the pages of the greatest fashion magazines, were images of models posing like successful business personas. Wearing a jacket was considered incredibly good, wearing a suit was even better. Vogue 1993: a photo of a small skinny girl with faded features without a sight of breasts and a somewhat bended nose, poses in comfy underwear. The girl is Kate Moss and ‘Under Exposure: what to wear beneath effort free clothes’ was the first Vogue editorial for Corinne Day. The term ‘ heroin chic’ is born around then and grunge starts paying the rent for both model and photographer making last season’s glamour look devoid of any meaning. In reality, three years perviously on the pages of a magazine unrelated to Vogue, glamour had already started to shake. In 1990 ‘The Face’ trusts the self-taught Corrine Day when she choses to use the fifteen year old Kate Moss as a model. In the ‘The Third Summer Of Love’ Corinne Day transforms her into a real girl playing with that awkward smile behind a set of crooked teeth. Day’s idea of fashion neglects the clothes themselves. Instead, she is interested in catching the moment, the feeling, what is real, as if she is doing fashion and documentary at the same time. In these photographs Day is making a comeback. A return to the basics. After that everything is simpler as if they always existed. Brutality is flirting with boredom, being undressed is free from an effort to seduce, the tv set remains shut and the flat is full of empty beer bottles. In the next frame the girl, still half-naked and in worn shoes, is daydreaming under the trees (England’s Dreaming, The Face). Corinne Day returns in the forest only seconds after having witnessed the city for what it’s worth; images that seem to be pending between what is real and unreal. An experiment.

Like loosing yourself in the streets of the city, walking over cigarette butts only to find yourself on top of a tree wearing Indian feathers on the head.

Ioanna Kourbela, studied fashion design and stage design and created her very own personal collection in 2002 with the label ‘IOANNA KOURBELA’. She has as source of inspiration anything that has to do with art as well as the elements of nature, like air and water.

The clothes she designs are always ethereal and unique. ‘Winter before Spring’ is her new collection and the designer approaches the female body in an innovating and special way. ‘Winter before Spring’ is already in stores all around Greece and at ‘Kourbela Ioanna Shop’ (Adrianou 109 & Chatzimichali).

Κυριαρχούν ρούχα με πιο ανδρόγυνες γραμμές ή και πιο αποκαλυπτικά, σε αποχρώσεις του μαύρου και του καφέ μέχρι και του κίτρινου, κοραλλί και λεβάντας, με λεπτομέρειες που κάνουν τη διαφορά.

Designers Remix Collection designed a new collection that is addressed to ‘curious women with strong willingness to explore their own contradictions’.

Charlotte Eskildsen took inspiration from the imaginary world of vampires and created clothes that redefine femininity and give women a new reason for feeling beautiful. The new collection is mainly consisted of masculine or more revealing clothes, in black, brown, yellow, coral and purple, with details that make a difference.

Ξεβαμμένα ή φαρδιά jeans λοιπόν, t-shirts με prints, παντελόνια και tracksuits σε neon αποχρώσεις, sneakers στα πιο funky χρώματα, κολεγιακά jackets, καρό πουκάμισα και jean jackets, είναι κάποια από τα βασικά trends που κυριάρχησαν στη δεκαετία του 90’.
