Το ξυπνητήρι επιμένει. Τελικά, είναι αυτά τα πρώτα δεκαπέντε λεπτά της ημέρας που μένουν στην αιωνιότητα. Ξεκινούν τη στιγμή που τα πόδια αφήνουν το στρώμα και αγγίζουν το ξύλινο πάτωμα. Αφαιρούνται στις πρώτες σταγόνες καφέ που πέφτουν στην γυάλινη κανάτα της καφετιέρας. Μοιάζουν ακίνητα όταν το σώμα μου βουλιάζει στον καναπέ προσπαθώντας να βολευτεί στην πρώτη συνθήκη της ημέρας. Το πρωινό φως στην Ακρόπολη δεν είναι ποτέ το ίδιο. Κοιτάω έξω και το χρώμα της αλλάζει λες και έχει διαφορετική διάθεση κάθε μέρα. Η δική μου είναι η ίδια πάντα τα πρώτα δεκαπέντε λεπτά της ημέρας. Η γεύση του καφέ είναι η ίδια σε κάθε μου ξύπνημα. Και το βλέμμα μου παραμένει παραξενεμένο κάθε πρωί, μπροστά στο μυστήριο της ζωής. Το πρώτο τέταρτο της ημέρας είναι η δική μου πιο απενοχοποιημένη απόλαυση. Ομολογώ πως μεταξύ ύπνου και ξύπνιου περνάω υπέροχα.

Η δουλειά του Ιωάννη Φετάνη είναι μια πολύπλευρη επίθεση ταλέντου. Ασχολείται με τη γραφιστική και το creative direction, ενώ έχει εισχωρήσει και στον χώρο της μόδας. Έχει βραβευτεί ενδεικτικά στη Διεθνή Biennale Graphic Design στη Μόσχα, στα ελληνικά βραβεία ΕΒΓΕ κ.ο.κ.

Ioannis Fetanis’ work reflects a multifaceted, fierce talent. He engages with graphic designing and creative direction, while he has entered the fashion field. Amongst other awards, he has received the Golden Bee Award (Moscow Global Biennale of Graphic Design), the EBGE award (Greek Graphic Design & Illustration Awards).

ώς θα χαρακτήριζες το σχεδιαστικό σου ύφος; Από πού θα έλεγες ότι έχεις επηρεαστεί; Είμαι fan της γεωμετρίας, της καθαρότητας και της φόρμας. Επίσης, φανατικός της Ρώσικης Πρωτοπορίας, του Bauhaus και της Gestalten. Η δουλειά μου είναι επηρεασμένη αρκετά από αυτά τα κινήματα. Αν μπορούσα επίσης να πω δυο λέξεις μόνο, αυτές θα ήταν Typo & Color Lover. Διακρίνω μία μαθηματική ακολουθία στο έργο σου, μια νοηματική σύνδεση αν θες ανάμεσα στο προϊόν και στο τελικό σχέδιό σου. Ό,τι σχεδιάζω έχει αρχή, μέση και τέλος. Έχει ένα concept πάντα και δεν είναι τίποτα τυχαίο. Προσπαθώ, από την πρώτη ανάγνωση, να είναι σαφής η επεξήγηση του περί τίνος πρόκειται. Άλλωστε αυτό είναι η οπτική επικοινωνία. Κάτι σαν δημιουργία κωδικοποίησης. Ποια είναι η γνώμη σου για το graphic design στην Ελλάδα; Δε ζηλεύει πια αυτό του εξωτερικού. Πολλά καλά δημιουργικά γραφεία και μεμονωμένοι σχεδιαστές δουλεύουν για πελάτες του εξωτερικού και το αποτέλεσμα είναι εκπληκτικό. Θεωρώ οτι ένα καλό που έκανε η κρίση ειναι να δουλεύουμε λίγο πιο σκληρά απ’ ό,τι πριν και να γινόμαστε καλύτεροι και νομίζω βοηθήσαμε τη χώρα να έχει ακόμα ένα εξαγώγιμο προϊόν: το design. Με τι ασχολείσαι αυτόν τον καιρό και ποια είναι τα μελλοντικά σου σχέδια; Από το καλοκαίρι του 2015 ασχολούμαι με το creative direction μιας ελληνικής εταιρείας premium streetwear (Sneak Aces). Έχω αρχίσει να δουλεύω ένα καινούργιο project με ένα νέο ελληνικό swimwear brand. Ασχολήθηκα πρώτη φορά με το χώρο της μόδας και είναι ενα ωραίο ταξίδι, διαφορετικό.

ow would you describe your designing style? What would you say has influenced it?

I love anything neat and geometric. I’m a fan of the Russian avant-garde wave, Bauhaus and Gestalten. My work is highly influenced by them. If I could only use two words, they would be Typo & Color Lover.

I get the sense that there’s a certain conceptual connection between each product and your final designs.

Whatever I design it always has a beginning, a middle and an end. There’s always a concept behind it and nothing is accidental. I want it to be clear to the viewer from the very beginning. That’s what visual communication is all about. It’s like creating a code.

What’s your opinion about graphic design in Greece?

It’s at the same level with graphic designing abroad.

There are many companies and individual designers that have clients abroad and their work is amazing.

I believe that the only good outcome of this financial crisis is that we have started to work a little harder and, therefore, we are becoming better at what we do. Due to this, our country now has another exportable product: design.

What are you working on at the moment and what are your plans for the future?

Since the summer of 2015 I’ve undertaken the creative direction of a Greek premium street-wear company (Sneak Aces). I’m also working on a new project at the moment, for a new Greek swimwear brand. This is my first experience in the fashion and it’s a positive one.

A STREET ARTIST IN ATOPOS

O Ιάκωβος, γνωστός σε όλους NAR, ασχολείται με το street graffiti εδώ και 20 χρόνια, αφήνοντας το δικό του στίγμα σε εγκαταλελειμμένα κτίρια και τοίχους. Έχει πάρει μέρος σε πολλές εκθέσεις street και urban art. Αυτήν τη φορά σε συνεργασία με την Atopos BlahBlahBlah,ο NAR δημιούργησε μια σειρά εγκαταστάσεων στο νεοκλασικό κτίριο του οργανισμού για την ενίσχυση του έργου του Ερυθρού Σταυρού Χίου με τους πρόσφυγες.

Iakovos, better known as NAR, has been a graffiti artist for 20 years now, and has left his personal mark on many abandoned buildings and walls. He has participated in many street and urban art exhibitions. In collaboration with Atopos BlahBlahBlah, NAR created a series of installations at the neoclassical building that houses the organization to support the work of Chios’ Red Cross with the refugees.

ο όνομά σου Ιάκωβος, το ψευδώνυμό σου ΝΑR. Τι σημαίνει; To NAR βγαίνει από το narcotic επειδή η δημιουργία μοιάζει με ναρκωτικό για μένα.

Τι σε εμπνέει στους εγκαταλελειμμένους χώρους; Έχεις κάποιον αγαπημένο; Με εμπνέει η ίδια η εγκατάλειψη, η ηρεμία που υπάρχει σε αυτά τα μέρη, η μοναξιά. Με ποια κριτήρια επιλέγεις τους χώρους που ζωγραφίζεις; Με ενδιαφέρει ο χώρος να είναι όσο πιο παρθένος γίνεται, να μην έχει graffiti και να είναι πολύπλοκος σαν κατασκευή.

Τα περισσότερα έργα σου απορρέουν μία απαισιοδοξία. Θέλεις να περάσεις κάποιο μήνυμα μέσα από αυτό; Θέλω να δείξω ότι μέσω της εγκατάλειψης μπορεί να βγει κάτι ωραίο. Πώς βρέθηκες στις επιχειρήσεις διάσωσης και προστασίας προσφύγων στο νησί της Σάμου; Η Atopos είχε αποφασίσει να ενισχύσει το έργο του Ερυθρού Σταυρού Χίου σε σχέση με τους πρόσφυγες και θέλησαν να συνεργαστούν μαζί μου για κάποια νέα δουλειά στον χώρο. Εντελώς συμπτωματικά όταν με πήραν τηλέφωνο βρισκόμουν στη Σάμο συμμετέχοντας στη δημιουργία κέντρων υποδοχής προσφύγων στο νησί. Η συγκυρία και η ιδέα που προέκυψε ήταν πολύ καλή και επέστρεψα στην Αθήνα λίγες εβδομάδες μετά για να δουλέψω για την έκθεση.

our name is Iakovos. What does your alias, NAR, mean?

NAR derives from ‘narcotic’ because I am addicted to creating.

Most of your work exudes pessimism. Is there a message you are trying to convey?

I want to show that beauty can derive from abandonment.

Why do abandoned places inspire you? Do you have a favorite?

Abandonment is what inspires me, the calmness and loneliness of these places.

How did you get involved with the refugee rescue operations on the island of Samos?

Atopos had decided to support Chios’ Red Cross work with the refugees and they wanted to collaborate with me on setting up an exhibition. When they called me, coincidentally I was in Samos participating in the setting up of a refugee welcome center. The circumstances and the idea for the exhibition were very interesting, and so, a few weeks later I returned to Athens to start working.

By what criteria do you choose the buildings you paint on?

I like it when the place is as ‘pure’ as possible, with no other graffiti, and when the building’s construction is complex.

STAYING TRUE TO THEIR ROOTS Στόχος του Νίκου Σακκαδάκη και της Ειρήνης Ανδρουλάκη ήταν οι δημιουργίες τους να μείνουν πιστές στις ρίζες τους. Με έντονες τις επιρροές του μινωικού, κρητικού πολιτισμού, δημιούργησαν μια σειρά από μεταξωτά φουλάρια με prints που φέρει την επωνυμία ΜΙΝΟ. Δίνοντας μια ανάσα φρέσκου αέρα στην ιδέα των απομνημονευμάτων και των σουβενίρ, τα φουλάρια MINO εκπέμπουν την καινοτομία διατηρώντας όμως την επαφή με το ιστορικό τους υπόβαθρο.

Στο διάστημα που προετοιμαζόμουν για το πανεπιστήμιο δούλεψα σε σχέδια του αρχαιολογικού μουσείου του Ηρακλείου, αγάπησα το μινωικό πολιτισμό και άρχισα να δουλεύω πάνω σε αυτά σχεδιάζοντας ρούχα και textiles. Συναντηθήκαμε όταν ο Νίκος ετοίμαζε το portfolio του. Τότε μελετούσαμε κι οι δυο το μινωικό πολιτισμό και καθώς αγαπάμε τη μόδα και το ύφασμα ειδικότερα, λίγους μήνες αργότερα αποφασίσαμε να σχεδιάσουμε κάτι μαζί. Κάπως έτσι ξεκίνησαν τα πρώτα σχέδια για ύφασματα και στη συνέχεια εξελίχθηκαν σε σχέδια μαντηλιών. Θελήσαμε όμως τα σχέδια αυτά να εξελιχθούν περαιτέρω, να δημιουργήσουν μια σχέση με τον άνθρωπο που τα φοράει αλλά και μια σχέση με την «καταγωγή» τους. Έτσι προσπαθήσαμε να προσδιορίσουμε αλλιώς τι σημαίνει σουβενίρ και να δημιουργήσουμε έναν ουσιαστικό διάλογο. Από πού αντλείτε την έμπνευσή σας; Γιατί επιλέξατε να σχεδιάζετε φουλάρια; Τα φουλάρια είναι ό,τι πιο κοντά σε μια ελεύθερη καλλιτεχνική δημιουργία χωρίς τους φυσικούς ή τεχνικούς περιορισμούς που έχει ένα ρούχο. Είναι σαν ένας καμβάς όπου μπορεί κανείς να βάλει ό,τι θέλει οπουδήποτε, σαν ένα αυτόνομο έργο. Επίσης, παρόλο που ένα μαντήλι επιλέγεται ακριβώς για το σχέδιό του, έτσι όπως δένεται φαίνεται μόνο μια εντύπωση του χρώματος και κρατά ένα κρυμμένο προσωπικό νόημα. Αυτή η ιδέα του «θραύσματος», της εντύπωσης μιας εικόνας που δεν ειναι πια ολόκληρη, μας άρεσε πολύ μια και είχε σχέση και με τα ίδια τα αντικείμενα-εκθέματα, πολλά από τα οποία είναι σε μορφή θραυσμάτων υπονοώντας μια μεγαλύτερη εικόνα. Ένα μισοσπασμένο προφίλ είναι αρκετό για να καταλάβει κανείς ότι πρόκειται για μια ανθρώπινη φιγούρα. Έτσι, σιγά σιγά εξελίχθηκε η ιδέα της επεξεργασίας των σχεδίων στο βαθμό που να δημιουργούν μια νέα δυναμική σε σχέση και με το χρόνο -χωρίς δηλαδή να προσπαθούμε να αναπαράγουμε τα ίδια στοιχεία στο σήμερα, αλλά να παραμένουν συνδεδεμένα με την πρωταρχική μορφή τους. Συνεργάζεστε σε κάθε κομμάτι της παραγωγής ή υπάρχει διαχωρισμός των ρόλων σας; Η παραμονή του Νίκου στο Λονδίνο πώς επηρεάζει τη συνεργασία σας; Εργαζόμαστε ανεξάρτητα και συζητάμε τα σχέδια και το concept μας. Strongly influenced from the Minoan and Cretan culture, they have created a line of silk scarves with prints bearing their brand name, MINO. Είναι μια κυκλική αλληλεπίδραση που ξεκινά σε ατομικό επίπεδο και μετατρέπεται σ’ ένα συλλογικό feedback όπου από εκεί ξεκινά και πάλι. Τώρα που ο Νίκος ζει στο Λονδίνο, μας λείπει η καθημερινότητα που είχαμε αλλά ελπίζουμε να δημιουργήσουμε κάποια πράγματα που θα μπορούσαν να κινηθούν εκεί. Εκτός από την έντονη επιρροή του μινωικού πολιτισμού στις δημιουργίες σας, με ποιον άλλο τρόπο σας επηρεαστήκατε από την κρητική σας καταγωγή; Η Κρήτη έχει διατηρήσει τρόπον τινά, ακόμη την ίδια αίσθηση και κάτω από τη σύγχρονη δομή της. Τα χρώματα και η ατμόσφαιρα, η παράδοση και συνάμα η μετεξέλιξή της σε ελληνικό σουβενίρ, είναι εικόνες που μας επηρεάζουν. Είναι οι εικόνες με τις οποίες μεγαλώσαμε. Όμως δεν είναι όλη μας η φετινή δουλειά εμπνευσμένη από το μινωικό πολιτισμό, κάναμε και μια σειρά με πιο pop σχέδια, όπως τα blur, tree, dot και twins, απλά τα περισσότερα σχέδιά μας ήταν και «λίγο μινωικά» καθώς περάσαμε πολύ καιρό μελετώντας το συγκεκριμένο πολιτισμό, τόσο που τον αγαπήσαμε και ονομάσαμε το brand μας Mino σαν υπενθύμιση της καταγωγής μας. Υπάρχει κάποιος σχεδιαστής με τον οποίο θα θέλατε να συνεργαστείτε; Θα θέλαμε πάρα πολύ να συνεργαστούμε με σχεδιαστές και να σχεδιάσουμε υφάσματα για τη δουλειά τους. Θα μας άρεσε να δημιουργήσουμε μια ευρύτερη ομάδα και να δουλέψουμε μαζί. Η ιδέα ενός ημιαυτόνομου υφάσματος που προσαρμόζεται σε κάποιο ρούχο αλλά έχει και το ίδιο, από μόνο του, δική του οντότητα ή αν θέλετε, «ιστορία», και να λειτουργεί συμπληρωματικά στην αφήγηση του ρούχου, είναι κάτι πολύ ενδιαφέρον για εμάς. Θα θέλαμε να πειραματιστούμε πάνω σε αυτή λοιπόν την ιδέα μέσα σε μια ομάδα που θα έχει τεχνικές γνώσεις αλλά και όρεξη να πειραματιστεί με διαφορετικά υφάσματα, concept και τρόπους υλοποιήσης. Ποια είναι τα μελλοντικά σας σχέδια; Θα μπορούσατε να σκεφτείτε τον εαυτό σας να σχεδιάζει κάτι άλλο πέρα από φουλάρια; Όπως είπαμε, μας ενδιαφέρει να να σχεδιάζουμε τόσο ρούχα όσο και υφάσματα γενικότερα, διότι μας απασχολεί ιδιαιτέρως το χρώμα και η υφή. Τα φουλάρια μας είναι από μετάξι γιατί το συγκεκριμένο ύφασμα αποτυπώνει τέλεια τα χρώματα και τα σχέδια και έχει εξαιρετική αίσθηση στο δέρμα, θέλουμε όμως να πειραματιζόμαστε με διάφορα υλικά και τεχνικές ύφανσης και τυπώματος. Κατ’ επέκταση, μας ενδιαφέρουν πολύ και τα textiles.

ould you tell us a little bit about yourselves, your brand and how your collaboration occurred?

We are Irini Androulaki and Nikos Sakkadakis.

I.: I have studied sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts and Product Design at ΑΚΤΟ, and the past few years I have been living in Iraklion, Crete, where I design textiles.

N.: I am studying Sculpture at UAL. While I was preparing for my studies abroad, I worked on some patterns at the Archaeologic Museum of Iraklion. I fell in love with the Minoan culture, and began designing clothes and textiles inspired by these patterns.

We met when Nikos was preparing his portfolio. During that period, we were both studying about the Minoan culture, and our mutual passion for fashion and textiles in general led to our collaboration a few months later, when we decided to design something together. We started off designing patterns for textiles which eventually evolved into patterns for scarves. We wanted, however, to develop these patterns into something more. We wanted the people wearing our scarves to connect with the origin of their patterns. So we tried to redefine the meaning of ‘souvenirs’ and create a powerful “dialogue”.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? How did the scarves occur?

Scarves are wearable artistic creations that lack the physical and technical constraints clothes have. They are like blank canvases -the creative possibilities are endless. Even though the pattern is the main reason you choose a specific scarf, it isn’t entirely visible when the scarf is finally worn. Only fragments of the scarf’s beauty can be seen. We loved this idea of “fragmented beauty”, which is exactly what defines the museum’s exhibits since most of them are pieces that once were a part of a larger artifact. We didn’t want to produce replicas of the ancient patterns, so we slowly developed the idea of slightly modifying them.

Do you work together on all phases of the production or independently? How has your collaboration been affected by Nikos’ studies in London?

We work independently but we go over the designs and concept together. We have a great collaboration because we both like each other’s work and are inspired from one another. It’s an interactive process, which is exactly what we miss now that Nikos is living in London, but we are hoping to create things that could be promoted there.

Apart from the evident influence of the Minoan culture in your work, in what other ways has your background influenced you?

We are highly influenced by all the images our island offers. Even though Crete has undergone many changes and has been modernized in many way, it still preserves its original essence. Crete’s overall atmosphere, colors and traditions are all the things that influence and inspire us. Most of our patterns are, indeed, influenced by the Minoan culture, which we adore. The brand name we chose, MINOS, is a tribute to this fascinating culture and our origins. However, our work this year wasn’t inspired exclusively by the Minoan culture. We also created a series with pop patterns, such as Blur, Tree, Dot and Twins.

Is there a specific designer with whom you would like to cooperate?

We would love to cooperate with designers who want textiles for their creations. We like the idea of creating a team with which we could work with. The idea of a “semi-independent” textile, which could be worn on its own or with other clothes, is something that interests us very much. We would like to experiment with this idea within a team of people who are passionate about experimenting with fabrics, concepts and techniques.

What are your plans for the future? Can you picture yourselves designing something apart from scarves?

We would like to be able to design both, clothes and scarves, because we are interested in colors and texture. We chose to make our scarves from silk, because colors and patterns print very well on silk and because the feeling of it against the skin is absolutely amazing. We do, however, enjoy experimenting with various materials, printing and weaving techniques.

Therefore, we are very interested in textiles.

Noodio.fm started off as a dissertation project and evolved through the Greek music scene’s Spotify. Its recent distinction in the competition “Innovation & Entrepreneurship”, has made noodio.fm creators very optimistic about the future.

ι ακριβώς είναι το noodio.fm; Πώς θα το περιγράφατε; Θα μπορούσε να πει κανείς ότι το noodio.fm είναι το Spotify της ελληνικής μουσικής σκηνής. Στόχος του είναι να φέρει σε επαφή τους νέους μουσικούς και τα συγκροτήματα της Ελλάδας με το εγχώριο κοινό. Το κοινό δηλαδή που ενδεχομένως θα πάει στην επόμενη συναυλία τους, από όπου και προέρχονται κυρίως τα έσοδά τους. Χρησιμοποιεί έναν καινοτόμο αλγόριθμο ψηφοφορίας που επιτρέπει στο noodio να αναδεικνύει αξιοκρατικά τους καλύτερους καλλιτέχνες με βάση τις ψήφους των ίδιων των ακροατών. Το μόνο που έχουν να κάνουν τα συγκροτήματα είναι να δημιουργήσουν το προσωπικό τους προφίλ και να ανεβάσουν τα καλύτερα μουσικά τους κομμάτια. Η διαδικασία απαιτεί το πολύ πέντε λεπτά από το χρόνο τους. Το προφίλ κάθε καλλιτέχνη δημιουργείται, εμπλουτίζεται και ανανεώνεται αυτομάτως με πληροφορίες (ειδήσεις, video, φωτογραφίες) από το facebook, το twitter, το youtube και όχι μόνο. Οι καλλιτέχνες ανεβάζουν τα κομμάτια τους στις μουσικές κατηγορίες της επιλογής τους και αυτά προστίθενται στους αντίστοιχους «ραδιοφωνικούς» σταθμούς, όπου τους δίνεται η ευκαιρία να ακουστούν και να πάρουν ψήφους από τους ακροατές του noodio.fm. Οι εγγεγραμμένοι ακροατές του noodio.fm μπορούν να επιλέξουν έναν από τους είκοσι τέσσερις σταθμούς του, να ψηφίσουν τα κομμάτια που τους αρέσουν περισσότερο αλλά και να κάνουν follow στις αγαπημένες τους μπάντες. Τόσο το playlist κάθε σταθμού όσο και η λίστα των συγκροτημάτων που τον συνοδεύει, καθορίζονται αλγοριθμικά σύμφωνα με τις ψήφους των ακροατών. Με άλλα λόγια, η ίδια η κοινότητα του noodio αναδεικνύει τα καλύτερα μουσικά κομμάτια και τους πιο αξιόλογους καλλιτέχνες. Παράλληλα, το noodio γνωρίζει τους fans κάθε συγκροτήματος, μπορεί να του υποδείξει σε ποια πόλη βρίσκονται και να τους ενημερώσει πότε το συγκρότημα έχει συναυλία εκεί. Όλοι βγαίνουν κερδισμένοι. Οι ακροατές ακούν, ανακαλύπτουν και ξεχωρίζουν τους καλύτερους νέους μουσικούς της Ελλάδας και οι μουσικοί έχουν άμεση πρόσβαση στους fans τους. Πώς προέκυψε η ιδέα; Ποια είναι τα πρόσωπα που κρύβονται από πίσω; Η σύλληψη του noodio.fm έγινε το 2010 στα πλαίσια της διπλωματικής εργασίας των φοιτητών του Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλίας, Χριστόφορου Βαρακλιώτη, Χριστόφορου Δημητριάδη και Αργύρη Στεργίου, υπό την επίβλεψη του καθηγητή, Νίκου Νανά. Η βασική ιδέα ήταν αποτέλεσμα μελέτης του αντίκτυπου που είχε το διαδίκτυο στη μουσική βιομηχανία. Διαπιστώσαμε ότι τα έσοδα των συγκροτημάτων προέρχονται κυρίως από τις ζωντανές εμφανίσεις τους -και όχι από πωλήσεις ή royalties. Γι’ αυτό το λόγο, το εγχώριο κοινό αποκτά ιδιαίτερη σημασία από πολλές απόψεις. Είναι καλύτερο για ένα συγκρότημα να γνωρίζει ότι υπάρχουν τρεις χιλιάδες άτομα στη Λάρισα που τους αρέσει η μουσική του και πολύ πιθανό να τους ενδιαφέρει και

να έρθουν στη συναυλία του, από το να έχει τριάντα χιλιάδες ακροατές ανά τον κόσμο που όμως δεν πρόκειται ποτέ να αγοράσουν τη μουσική του ή να παραβρεθούν σε κάποιο live. Η υλοποίησή του -στη μορφή που έχει σήμερα- ξεκίνησε το 2012, μετά την ολοκλήρωση των στρατιωτικών υποχρεώσεων των φοιτητών. Στην πορεία συνεργαστήκαμε με τον Τάσο Κουτσοφάβα για το σχεδιασμό του noodio και τον Γιώργο Σκιαδόπουλο για την επιχειρηματική του ανάλυση. Ποια είναι η διαφορά του από τις υπόλοιπες αντίστοιχες υπηρεσίες music streaming; Πρώτα από όλα, το noodio είναι local. Τι σημαίνει για εσάς αυτή η διάκριση; Πώς αλλάζουν τα σχέδιά σας ύστερα από αυτήν; To noodio ήδη διακρίθηκε σε πολλούς διαγωνισμούς καινοτομίας και επιχειρηματικότητας, αλλά ποτέ μέχρι τώρα δεν πήρε την πρώτη θέση. Πέρα από την όποια ανταμοιβή των κόπων μας, η χρονική στιγμή που ήρθε η συγκεκριμένη βράβευση είναι εξαιρετικά σημαντική. Αρχικά, μας αναπτερώνει το ηθικό για να συνεχίσουμε την προσπάθεια επιπλέον, προβάλλει το ώριμο πια noodio στο ευρύ κοινό και φυσικά, μας δίνει και μια οικονομική ανάσα για να το αναπτύξουμε και να το προωθήσουμε περαιτέρω. Ελπίζουμε τόσο το κοινό, όσο -και κυρίωςτα συγκροτήματα της Ελλάδος να εκτιμήσουν την ειλικρινή μας πρόθεση να συνεισφέρουμε στην ελληνική μουσική σκηνή. Φυσικά, αν το noodio πετύχει στην Ελλάδα, στόχος μας είναι να το μεταφέρουμε και σε άλλες χώρες, πάντα ωστόσο σε τοπικό, εθνικό επίπεδο.

hat exactly is noodio.fm?

One could say that noodio.fm is the Greek music scene’s Spotify. It aims to connect up-coming Greek musicians and bands with the local audience- the audience that will potentially come to their next concert which is their main source of income. It uses an innovative algorithm which allows noodio to objectively feature the best artists based on the audience’s votes. All the bands have to do is create a profile page and upload their best songs. The whole process doesn’t take more than five minutes. The profiles are updated automatically with any information (news, videos, photos), video, φωτογραφίες) posted on facebook, twitter, youtube etc. The artists upload their songs to the musical category of their choice and then these songs are added to online “radio stations”, where the noodio.fm audience can listen to them and vote. Registered audience can choose one noodio.fm’s 24 stations and vote for their favorite songs. The can also “follow” their favorite bands. The station’s playlists and list of artists is determined by the audience’s votes. In other words, noodio’s musical community promotes the best songs and artists. Noodio also informs the fans where their favorite band is playing and when they are playing in their town. It’s a beneficial process for everyone. The audience gets to listen to new songs, discover new bands and promote the best artists in Greece, and the artists can directly connect with their fans.

How did this idea occur? Who are the people behind this project?

We came up with the concept of noodio.fm in 2010 within the context of a group-project dissertation for the University of Thessaly.

The students involved were Christoforos Varakliotis, Christoforos Dimitriadis and Argiris Stergiou and were supervised by Nikos Nanas. The subject was the effect the internet has on the music industry. We realized that most of the artists’ income came from their live shows and not from their album sales. This is one of the many reasons why having a local audience is very important. It is much better for a band to know that there are three thousand people in Larisa that love their music and that would most likely go to their concerts-rather than having thirty thousand fans world-wide, who

will never buy their album or come to any of the concerts.

Noodio took on the form it has today in 2012, when we all finally completed our military service. We later collaborated with Taso Koutsofava, who designed the site for noodio, and with Giorgo Skiadopoulo, who managed the business analysis.

How does noodio differ from the rest of the music streaming services?

First of all, noodio is local. This is probably its main difference from the global music streaming services. This means that the bands we feature don’t compete with bands from the rest of the world for air time. This also means, that their audience, their fans, are locals and are able to go to their upcoming concerts.

Noodio also differs in the algorithms that are used- an innovative voting system which promotes collectively and objectively the best bands.

What role does music play in your lives?

Unfortunately, apart from Giorgo Skiadopoulos who is Ex-Girlfriend’s Perfume’s guitarist, the rest of us aren’t musicians. All of us, however, adore music. We love searching for and discovering new bands that aren’t considered mainstream.

You recently won the first prize in the competition, “Innovation & Entrepreneurship”. What does this mean to you and how does it affect your future plans?

Noodio has won awards in many innovation and entrepreneurship competitions, but this is the first time we won the first prize. This is a great achievement for us and the timing couldn’t have been better.

It has boosted our morale and given us the strength to continue our work, it has introduced noodio to the general public and it has given us a financial boost that will help us further develop it. We hope that our audience as well as the Greek bands will appreciate our honest intentions to contribute to the Greek musical scene. And of course, if noodio takes off in Greece, we plan to expand it abroad, but will always promote Greek artists.

εγάλωσε ακούγοντας hip-hop και κάνοντας βανδαλισμούς στους κακόφημους δρόμους της Γεωργίας των ‘80s, σπούδασε fashion design στη Βασιλική Ακαδημία Καλών Τεχνών και ύστερα από χρόνια συνεργασιών με μεγάλους οίκους, όπως ο Maison Margiela και η Louis Vuitton, γίνεται ο συνιδρυτής και αρχηγός της ομάδας του label Vetements. Πρόσφατα, ανέλαβε το ρόλο του καλλιτεχνικού διευθυντή στον οίκο Balenciaga, κάτι που μας κάνει να θέλουμε να τον γνωρίσουμε ακόμα περισσότερο, μέσα από μία αναδρομή στη ζωή και το έργο του. Μέσα σε λίγα χρόνια κατάφερε να εξασφαλίσει κάτι για το οποίο μεγάλες εταιρείες προσπαθούν σκληρά: την αξιοπιστία. Και αυτό γιατί ισορρόπησε το επίπεδο της δημοσιότητάς του με την πάγια ιδεολογική του βάση. Ο λόγος για το label Vetements (στα γαλλικά σημαίνει «ρούχα»), που ιδρύθηκε στο Παρίσι, σε ένα υπόγειο διαμέρισμα, με μια πολύ συγκεκριμένη αποστολή: να εστιάσει καθαρά στο ρούχο. Μπορεί να ακούγεται κοινότυπο είναι όμως επαναστατικό. Σήμερα, από ένα show δεν θυμάσαι το ρούχο καθεαυτό, αλλά το περιβάλλον που το πλαισιώνει. Ο Demna Gvasalia, ιδρυτής της εταιρείας, γεννήθηκε το 1981 στο Sukhumi της Γεωργίας, μία πόλη που βρίσκεται ανάμεσα στη Μαύρη Θάλασσα και στον Καύκασο. Εκεί πέρασε τα πρώτα χρόνια της ζωής του, μέχρι που μετακόμισε προσωρινά στο Βέλγιο για να σπουδάσει fashion design -εξειδικευμένο αρχικά στον άντρα- στη Βασιλική Ακαδημία Καλών Τεχνών της Αμβέρσας. Το 2009 εγκαταστάθηκε στο Παρίσι όπου άρχισε να δουλεύει στο πλευρό του Martin Margiela, ο οποίος επηρέασε σημαντικά την τεχνική και την αισθητική του ταυτότητα. Στη συνέχεια, δούλεψε για τη Louis Vuitton και κατάφερε να αποκτήσει τη θέση του senior designer στο αντρικό τμήμα, μέχρι το 2014, όπου την εγκατέλειψε για να ξεκινήσει το Vetements και να ορίσει πια τη δική του ταυτότητα που έχει να κάνει με μία πολύ σημαντική ιδέα: την πραγματική ελευθερία. Ζώντας σαν παιδί υπό το καθεστώς της Σοβιετικής Ένωσης, ένιωθε ότι τα ερεθίσματα του περιορίζονται συνεχώς. Μπορεί το σοσιαλιστικό σύστημα της δωρεάν Υγείας, Παιδείας και Στέγασης να οδήγησε αρχικά σε μια φαινομενική άνοδο του βιοτικού επιπέδου, ωστόσο υπήρξε προσπάθεια χειραγώγησης της κοινής γνώμης και περιορισμός στην Τέχνη. «Υπήρχαν μόνο δύο περιοδικά που ασχολούνταν με τη μόδα, και αυτά προωθούσαν ένα στιλ προκλητικά συμβατικό», υπογραμμίζει σε συνέντευξή του στο 032c. Μάλιστα, έχει αναφέρει ειρωνικά στο παρελθόν πως με τη διάλυση της Σοβιετικής Ένωσης, το 1991, είδε για πρώτη φορά Fanta, Coca-Cola και Vogue! Έτσι ξεκίνησε να αποκτά αναφορές για το έργο του. Μέχρι τότε ήταν πολύ κλειστοί οι ορίζοντες. Αγαπούσε τον πειραματισμό μέσω της ένδυσης. Τα περισσότερα παιδιά όμως, φορούσαν τα ίδια ρούχα καθημερινά. Στη Γεωργία οι άνθρωποι συνήθιζαν να φορούν μαύρα, είχε μια δραματική δόση η εμφάνισή τους. Το μόνο extreme στις γυναίκες ήταν το έντονο make up και -σε συγκεκριμένες περιπτώσεις- η διακόσμηση πάνω στο ρούχο με τυχαία υλικά. Και αυτή η φιλοσοφία πέρασε και στα Vetements. Τα υλικά που χρησιμοποιούνται δίνουν την εντύπωση ότι είναι μοναδικά αλλά ταυτόχρονα απευθύνονται σε πολύ κόσμο. Υπάρχει αναφορά στη hip-hop μουσική αλλά και ένας υπόγειος δραματικός υπαινιγμός.

Η ΣΥΝΕΡΓΑΣΙΑ ΜΕ ΤΗ BALENCIAGA «Θέλαμε πραγματικά κάποιον που να έχει όραμα», είπε η Isabelle Guichot, διευθύνουσα σύμβουλος της Balenciaga όταν, μετά την αποχώρηση του Alexander Wang, άρχισαν την αναζήτηση του νέου καλλιτεχνικού διευθυντή του οίκου. «Στην πρώτη μου συνάντηση με τον Gvasalia έμεινα πραγματικά έκπληκτη από τον τρόπο που ανέπτυξε την προσέγγισή του για τον οίκο. Ήταν πραγματικά πολύ φρέσκια και αυθεντική: ποιο θα είναι το πρότυπο, ποια πρέπει να είναι η σιλουέτα και πώς όλα αυτά θα ισορροπήσουν με την ιστορία του Balenciaga. Όλα ήταν ξεκάθαρα δοσμένα».

To μυστικό της επιτυχίας του Gvasalia στη Balenciaga θα είναι αυτή, η ίδια ιδέα που πρεσβεύει και το brand του. Η ελευθερία. Η οποία καταρχήν συνεπάγεται το σεβασμό στην ιστορία του οίκου. «Είδα το αρχείο του οίκου, θα μείνω πιστός στο DNA του Cristobal Balenciaga και θα χτίσω ένα νέο μοντέλο που θα ανταποκρίνεται στις απαιτήσεις του σήμερα», δήλωσε. Δεν μένει παρά να περιμένουμε το ντεμπούτο του για την AW16 συλλογή το Φεβρουάριο στο Παρίσι. vetementswebsite.com

e grew up listening to hip-hop and participating in vandalism on the infamous streets of Georgia in the 80s. He studie fashion design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and after collaborating for many years with well-known fashion houses, such as Maison Margiela and Louis Vuitton, he later became the co-founder and team leader of the Vetements label. Recently he was appointed Creative Director for the fashion house Balenciaga, and this has made us curious to learn more about him and his work.

In only a few years, he has managed to successfully obtain credibility, something many large companies strive for. This is due to the fact that he has managed to keep his publicity in balance with his beliefs. His brand Vetements (which means “clothes” in French) was founded in a basement apartment in Paris and had a very specific mission; to bring the focus back to clothes. This may sound simple but it is, indeed, revolutionary, since nowadays fashion shows are mostly atmosphere orientated, leaving the visitor overwhelmed by the branding and the presentation of the clothes rather than the clothes themselves.

Demna Gvasalia, the founder of the company, was born in 1981 and raised in Sukhumi, Georgia, a city located between the Black Sea and the Caucasus region. He later moved to Belgium to study men’s fashion design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp. In 2009 he moved to Paris where he started working alongside Martin Margiela, who significantly affected his technique and aesthetic identity. Later on, Gvasalia joined Louis Vuitton and was the Senior Designer for their men’s collections up until 2014. He then left the company to found Vetements and define his own creative identity. His creative identity is based on an important concept: true freedom.

Having lived as a child under the political system of the Soviet Union, the level stimulation he received was limited. This economic and political system may have promoted important principles, such as the equal right to health, housing and education which initially raised the living standards of the country.

However, Marxists and communists claimed that socialism was ineffective. The public opinion was manipulated and art was restricted. “There were only two fashion magazines which promoted an extremely conventional style”, according to Gvasalia in an interview he gave to 032c. He has also mentioned in the past that he first laid eyes on a Fanta, a Coca-Cola and Vogue magazine in 1991, with the dissolution of the Soviet Union. That was also when he began to acquire the resources for his work.

Up until then the resources available to him where very limited. He enjoyed creatively experimenting and expressing himself though clothes, but most of the children would wear the same clothes every day.

In Georgia people would usually wear black which gave a dramatic element to their appearance. The only thing about their appearance that was beyond convention, was the heavy make-up women would wear, and in some cases, the use of random materials to decorate clothes. Vetements is based on this philosophy; the materials used for his creations give you the impression that they are unique but, in fact, they are meant for a wide range of people. There are hip-hop influences and dramatic elements to all of his creations.

COLLABORATING WITH BALENCIAGA “We really wanted someone that has a vision”, said Chief Executive Officer and President Balenciaga, Isabelle Guichot, when they started looking for the new Creative Director that would succeed Alexander Wang. “I was really amazed by his ability to develop an approach to the brand that was really new and that was really his own; what should be the attitude, what should be the silhouette, what should be the volumes.”

Gvasalia’s success lies in respecting Balenciaga’s history and in the concept that his own brand reflects: freedom. He said, “I am looking forward to further expand the DNA of the house and, together with the team, to write a new chapter in its history.” Gvasalia will present his first collection for Balenciaga in Paris in February.

ο ordino ήταν νωρίς το πρωί, γιατί μετά είχε πρόβα για τη θεατρική παράσταση που πρωταγωνιστεί. Θα υποδυθεί τη Βικτώρια στο έργο του Μπλέικ Έντουαρντς, Victor Victoria, που ξεκίνησε στις 12 Φεβρουαρίου στο θέατρο Πάνθεον, σε σκηνοθεσία του Απόλλωνα Παπαθεοχάρη. Όταν της είπα ότι θα τη φωτογραφίσουμε στο Βυρσοδεψείο γέλασε και μου είπε: «Εδώ έρχεται η κόρη μου, σε μουσικά events και parties». Ακούγαμε στο youtube το “Βroken” των Depeche Mode και συζητούσαμε με τον Δημήτρη και τη Βίβιαν τις τελευταίες λεπτομέρειες του moodboard για το beauty. Έχοντας βαρεθεί τα ρετούς και τις άψυχες πόζες που πρέπει να δείχνεις χαρούμενος, της άρεσε που θα έβγαινε πιο raw. Μείναμε οι δυο μας για να της παρουσιάσω τα looks. Λάτρεψε ένα μάλλινο παλτό της Ann Demeulemeester και το φόρεσε στην πρώτη λήψη. Ήρθε ο Γιώργος Μαυρόπουλος και λίγη ώρα μετά ξεκίνησε η φωτογράφηση. Στην αρχή ήταν σφιγμένη αλλά σύντομα την έκανε να νιώσει άνετα. «Κάνε ό,τι σε εκφράζει», της είπε όταν ολοκληρώσαμε το πρώτο look και συνέχισε να τη φωτογραφίζει. Έτσι, ένας άλλος χαρακτήρας άρχισε να ξεδιπλώνεται. Χορεύει, τραγουδάει, παίρνει διάφορες εκφράσεις αλλά ποτέ δεν ποζάρει. Και δεν ρώτησε ούτε μια φορά αν βγήκε σωστά η λήψη. Το έζησε!

e met at our agreed time early in the morning because she later had to attend a rehearsal for the play in which she has the main role. She will be portraying Victoria in Blake Edwards’s Victor Victoria (Apollonas Papatheocharis will be directing the play), which made its premiere at the Pantheon Theater on February, 12.

When I told her that the photo shoot was to take place at Vyrsodepseio (the old tannery which is now an art space), she laughed and said, “My daughter comes here for music events and parties.” But she immediately felt comfortable with the environment. We listened to Depeche Mode’s “Broken”on youtube and we talked about the last details of our moodboard for our beauty section with Dimitris and Vivian. She liked the fact that her photos would have a more ‘raw’ effect- she wasn’t into fake posing and airbrushing. Then it was just the two of us. I showed her the looks that we were going for and she fell in love with a woolen coat by Ann Demeulemeester, so she wore that for the first shot.

Yiorgos Mavropoulos came a bit later and started taking photographs. In the beginning she was reserved but Yiorgos quickly made her feel comfortable. “Express yourself in any way you like”, he told her when we finished the first look. And so, another personality came to the surface; she started dancing, singing and her face took on many spontaneous expressions. She never posed.

And she never asked how the shot came out. She just enjoyed the experience.

Maria Flora Lehec is the creator of the label SOMF. Digital prints with pop references and Greek folkloric elements, and laser cut details are what make her creations stand out. She presented her latest collection at the 18th Xclusive Designers Week and she spoke to us about her working experience in London, her life in Greece and her plans for SOMF.

origin within the fashion industry. The beautiful climate and the vitality of Athens has made me much more creative. In addition, the prices of local products guarantee that I can create a product that can be affordable to everyone. I really don’t believe fashion should be expensive the way prêt-à-porter and contemporary fashion is in the UK. Have you ever experienced prejudice due to the fact that your company is based in Greece, a country with a negative economic status the past five years?

No. I don’t think anyone really cares where you are from, as long as you deliver on time.

How is the industry developing in Paris?

During this season, I feel like the whole industry is a breath away from experiencing a domino effect. Many distinguished designers have deserted their positions, due to the current global economy and the inhumane demands and paces of the industry (6 collections per year etc.)

Where can we find your latest collection? What are you working on at the moment?

At the moment, I am creating the SOMF online shop where you can find items from my latest collections, as well as best seller items from previous collections, such as the tattoo leggings.

Tην Gioia de Bruijn την γνωρίσαμε μέσα από το project της, “Weekend Warriors”. Φωτογράφιζε τους φίλους της, ενώ χαλάρωναν από την ένταση της εβδομάδας το σαββατοκύριακο, κάνοντας ό,τι κάνει ένας νέος: διασκεδάζει, με όποιον τρόπο τον ευχαριστεί.

We got to know Gioia de Bruijn through the “Weekend Warriors” project. She would photograph her friends during the weekends while they were relaxing, each in their own way.

ερίγραψέ μας πώς είναι να μεγαλώνει κανείς στην Καραϊβική. Με πολλή ζέστη. Σχεδόν πάντα ήμασταν έξω, στην παραλία, κάνοντας σέρφινγκ ή βόλτες με το αυτοκίνητο και πηγαίναμε σε απομακρυσμένα μέρη που δεν τα γνωρίζουν οι τουρίστες. Ακούγεται ιδανικό, παρ’ όλα αυτά όμως ήμουν παιδί και έπρεπε να πηγαίνω σχολείο. Οπότε θεωρώ πως ουσιαστικά ήταν παρόμοιο με το πώς μεγαλώνει κανείς οπουδήποτε αλλού. Μόνο που εμείς δεν φορούσαμε ποτέ παλτό, πουλόβερ ή κάλτσες. Το νησί στο οποίο μεγάλωσα εγώ, το Curaçao, είναι αρκετά μικρό και όλοι γνωρίζονται μεταξύ τους. Δεν μπορούσαμε να κάνουμε ποτέ κάτι στα κρυφά γιατί πάντα μαθεύονταν και ο ένας σχολίαζε τον άλλον. Ανυπομονούσα να τελειώσω το σχολείο για να φύγω και να πάω σε ένα μέρος που θα μου προσέφερε ανωνυμία και ελευθερία. Πώς μπήκε στη ζωή σου η φωτογραφία; Σε πολύ μικρή ηλικία συνειδητοποίησα ότι η ζωή μου ήταν αρκετά διαφορετική από τις ζωές των φίλων και συγγενών μου που ζούσαν στην Ευρώπη. Οι γονείς μου μού έδιναν εβδομαδιαίο χαρτζηλίκι το οποίο ξόδευα σε φωτογραφικές μηχανές μιας χρήσης. Εκείνοι είχαν πολλά άλμπουμ με φωτογραφίες μας (δικές μου, του αδελφού μου και της αδελφής μου) και πάντα μου άρεσε να τα ξεφυλλίζω. Όσο είσαι παιδί, οι γονείς σου είναι πάντα εκεί να φωτογραφίζουν κάθε σημαντική στιγμή σου. Όταν όμως μεγαλώνεις, δεν είναι εκεί να καταγράφουν τις αστείες στιγμές με τους φίλους σου. Νομίζω πως το συνειδητοποίησα αρκετά γρήγορα αυτό και αποφάσισα να συνεχίσω να καταγράφω η ίδια τη ζωή μου μέσω της φωτογραφίας ώστε να μπορώ αργότερα να θυμάμαι αυτές τις στιγμές.

ou grew up in the Carribean. What was it like growing up there?

It was warm. We were always outside, on the beach, surfing, driving around and exploring remote parts of the island that the tourists don’t get to see. I know this sounds idyllic, but apart from that I was still just a kid and I had to go to school. So I guess in the end it was just like growing up anywhere else, only we didn’t have to wear coats or sweaters or socks. Having said that, the island I grew up on, Curaçao, is quite small, and everyone knows everyone. You could never really do anything in secret, because everyone would talk shit about everyone. By the time I was done with school, I was so ready to go somewhere where I had a little more anonymity and freedom.

How did photography come into your life?

I realized at quite a young age that the life I was living was not like the lives that my friends and family in Europe were experiencing. My parents gave me a small allowance every week and I would usually spend it on disposable cameras.

They had a lot of photo albums of us (my brother, my sister and I) while we were growing up and I always loved looking at them. When you are little, your parents are usually around when you’re playing and having fun, but when you grow up they aren’t around anymore to document the stupid things that you do with your friends. I guess I became aware of this and at some point I just decided to continue documenting my own life, so I could look back on it later.

Πώς έχει επηρεάσει αυτό τη δουλειά σου; Έχω δει και έχω κάνει πολλά πράγματα επειδή έκανα παρέα με ανθρώπους διαφόρων ηλικιών. Τα περισσότερα έχουν καταγραφεί. Όταν ήμουν δεκατεσσάρων, θυμάμαι πως μαζί με τους φίλους μου, είχαμε νοικιάσει ένα διαμέρισμα στο γειτονικό νησί Bonaire, με αφορμή ένα αγώνα λεμβοδρομίας.’Hμασταν οχτώ έφηβοι σε ένα διαμέρισμα κοντά στην παραλία, όλοι κάτω από το νόμιμο όριο ηλικίας κατανάλωσης αλκοόλ και χωρίς καμία επιτήρηση. Ήταν θαύμα το πώς επιζήσαμε. Αυτή είναι η πρώτη φορά που θυμάμαι να έχω μια μηχανής μιας χρήσης μαζί μου και να καταγράφω συνειδητά εικόνες. Χάρη στις φωτογραφίες μπορώ να θυμάμαι πολλές τρελές ιστορίες και όμορφα μέρη που έχω επισκεφτεί. Αυτός είναι ο κύριος λόγος που βγάζω φωτογραφίες. Θέλω να θυμάμαι τα πάντα και οι φωτογραφίες με βοηθούν. Ποιες τρεις λέξεις χαρακτηρίζουν τις φωτογραφίες σου; Επιβλητικές. Διφορούμενες. Μπερδεμένες.

ou were allowed to do a lot of stuff other kids your age were not allowed to do. How has this affected your work?

I guess because I hung out with people of all ages and did all kinds of stuff, I have seen and done a lot. And most of it was documented. I remember when I was fourteen, my friends and I rented an apartment on the neighbouring island Bonaire, because there was a boat race going on. We were eight teenagers in a house near the beach and the boulevard (everyone was under the legal drinking age) with absolutely no adult supervision. Miraculously, we all came out alive. This is the first time I consciously remember having a disposable camera, and I have pictures of this trip. Because of the pictures, I am able to remember a lot of the crazy stories and beautiful places that I have seen in my life. This is exactly why I take photographs. I want to remember everything and because of the photos I can remember all these moments much more vividly.

Τι σου αρέσει να φωτογραφίζεις πιο πολύ; Τι σε εμπνέει; Λατρεύω να φωτογραφίζω άδειες πόλεις, με ελκύουν οι γωνίες και οι γραμμές τους. Οι άνθρωποι, από την άλλη, με εκνευρίζουν ελαφρώς. Είναι αντιφατικός ο τίτλος «άδειες πόλεις» και οι γωνίες και οι γραμμές τους συνδυάζονται συνήθως με τους ανθρώπους, οι οποίοι με αποσυντονίζουν. Αποσυντονίζομαι με τα πάντα, γι’ αυτό και μου αρέσει τα αντικείμενα που φωτογραφίζω να είναι minimal. Mε χαρακτηρίζει μια κοινωνική αδεξιότητα και έτσι η φωτογραφική μηχανή λειτουργεί σαν προστατευτική ασπίδα. Με βοηθά να δραπετεύω από την πραγματικότητα. Όταν βρίσκομαι σε μία κοινωνική περίσταση συνήθως νιώθω «έξω από τα νερά μου» ή βαριέμαι, οπότε προσπαθώ να έχω πάντα μια φωτογραφική μηχανή μαζί μου για να με βγάζει από αυτή τη δύσκολη θέση. Γι’ αυτό ξεκίνησα να βγάζω φωτογραφίες. Για να δραπετεύω και για να θυμάμαι.

Which three words describe your photos the best?

Majestic. Ambiguous. Confusing.

Για το “Weekend Warriors” έχεις φωτογραφίσει τους φίλους σου καθώς χαλαρώνουν το σαββατοκύριακο. Πώς ήταν αυτή η εμπειρία και για τις δυο πλευρές; Δεν ξέρω πώς να απαντήσω διότι θα πρέπει να δώσω ορισμό σε κάτι που δεν έχει. Χαλαρώναμε το σαββατοκύριακο, κάνοντας ένα διάλειμμα από την καθημερινότητά μας. Δεν σκεφτόμασταν και πολύ και αυτό ακριβώς ήταν η ουσία. Όταν φωτογράφιζα κάποιον να καπνίζει ή να είναι στην μπανιέρα, συνήθως κάπνιζα και εγώ μαζί τους ή ήμουν κι εγώ μαζί τους στην μπανιέρα, οπότε δεν τους ένοιαζε. Όλοι κάπνιζαν και όλοι φιλιόντουσαν. Κάναμε ό,τι κάνουν οι νέοι- ήμασταν, δηλαδή, η προσωποποίηση του ορισμού της νεότητας.

For “Weekend Warriors”, you have shot your friends during their weekend, while smoking, kissing, etc. What was it like for both sides involved?

I don’t know how to answer this, because it would require me to define something that is undefinable. We were just hanging out on the weekend, taking a break from our everyday lives. There was not a lot of thinking going on, and that was exactly the point. If I photographed someone while they were smoking or in the bathtub, it was done naturally because I was also smoking or in that bathtub with them. Everyone was smoking and everyone was kissing. We were being young in exactly the way you would define the word if the ideal meaning of “young” had to be stated.

Τι κάνεις όταν δεν βγάζει φωτογραφίες; Βλέπω πολλά reality στην τηλεόραση. Με εντυπωσιάζει η τρέλα των ανθρώπων, πάντα όμως από ασφαλή απόσταση.

What are you doing when not photographing your subjects?

I watch a lot of reality TV. I am so fascinated by people and their craziness-from a safe distance, of course.

Ποια είναι τα σχέδιά σου για το άμεσο μέλλον; Υποβάλλω αιτήσεις για μεταπτυχιακά, διότι με ενδιαφέρει να συνεχίζω να μαθαίνω. Προσπαθώ, επίσης, να βρω χρηματοδότηση για να κάνω κάποια project στις ΗΠΑ. Με γοητεύει η κουλτούρα της «εμπορικής θρησκείας», καθώς και η κουλτούρα του «24/7», ειδικά σε σύγκριση με την Ευρώπη. Είναι πολύ πιο έντονες στις ΗΠΑ απ’ ό,τι στην Ολλανδία, για παράδειγμα. Θα ήθελα να διασχίσω την Αμερική με αυτοκίνητο και να φωτογραφίσω τις «αυτοσχέδιες» εκκλησίες που «καλλιεργεί» η Αμερική και να τις συγκρίνω με τις εκκλησίες στην Ολλανδίας, που έχουν ανακυκλωθεί σαν κτήρια λόγω της έλλειψης χώρου και του μειωμένου ενδιαφέροντος προς την πίστη. Δεν ξέρω πώς θα το κάνω, αλλά είναι κάτι που με εντυπωσιάζει κάθε φορά που επισκέπτομαι τις ΗΠΑ. Σε αυτό το πρότζεκτ θα μπορέσω να συνδυάσω τις άδειες πόλεις με τις αδέξιες κοινωνικές καταστάσεις, δύο θέματα που χαρακτηρίζουν τη δουλειά μου.

What are your upcoming plans?

At the moment, I am applying for a master’s degree program, because I never want to stop learning. I am also trying to round up some funding to do some projects throughout the United States.

I am really fascinated by, what I call, their culture of “commercial religion” and also their “24/7” culture, especially in relation to Europe. They are much more prominent element in the States than in the Netherlands, for example. I feel like driving across the country to systematically document the makeshift churches that America cultivates and then juxtapose them with the churches that the Netherlands have repurpose due to lack of interest in faith and lack of space. I haven’t really figured out the details, but it’s something that fascinates me every time I go to the States. This way I can combine empty cities with awkward social situations, and that seems to be kind of what I am all about.

What is your favorite subject to shoot? Where do you draw inspiration from?

I love shooting empty cities, because I love their angles and lines.

People, however, annoy me a little bit. The phrase “empty cities” is contradictory, and the angles and lines are usually combined with humans, which I find distracting. Everything distracts me, so I prefer my subjects to be minimal. I guess I am also a little bit socially awkward, and a camera is sort of like a protection shield. It’s an escape from reality for a moment. When I am in a social situation, I tend to feel out of place or bored, so I always have a camera on hand to protect me from the awkwardness. I guess these are the reasons why I started taking photos. To escape and to remember.

We didn’t abandon her when things got tough. We love hating her and we hate that we love her. “She” is Athens, one of Europe’s historical capital cities. How different is our city today in 2016? And why do we love complaining about the fact that we still live here?

WORDS BY DIMITRIS STAVROGIANNIS ● Μπορεί το Εθνικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης να μην άνοιξε ακόμα για το κοινό, αλλά η μεταφορά της Εθνικής Λυρικής Σκηνής και της Εθνικής Βιβλιοθήκης στο Κέντρο Πολιτισμού Ίδρυμα Σταύρος Νίαρχος στο Δέλτα Φαλήρου, ήδη υπόσχεται να δώσει μια νέα νότα στις πολιτιστικές δράσεις της Αθήνας, με ένα αρχιτεκτονικό αριστούργημα- σχεδιασμένο από τον Ιταλό αρχιτέκτονα, Renzo Piano.

The National Museum of Contemporary Art is unfortunately still closed to the public. However, the transfer of the National Opera and the National Library to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFC) at Faliro Delta which is housed in an architectural masterpiece designed by Renzo Piano, an Italian architect, is promising and gives hope for new cultural events in our city. ● Η απουσία του Γιώργου Λούκου από το Φεστιβάλ Αθηνών και η ανάληψη της καλλιτεχνικής διεύθυνσης από τον Γιαν Φαμπρ ανοίγει μια νέα σελίδα στην ιστορία του θεσμού. Yiorgos Loukos’ absence from the Athens Festival and his replacement by Jan Fabre marks the beginning of a new chapter for the institution. Nevertheless, the remarkable names that have passed through the institution, such as Pina Baus and Kevin Spacey, create anticipation for what the future holds. ● Από τη γνωριμία νέων καλλιτεχνών στο ελληνικό κοινό που εγγυάται η State of Concept, μέχρι την παραστατική ζωγραφική πάνω στην οποία επικεντρώνεται η Genesis, και τις αξιοζήλευτες εκθέσεις της Atopos που λειτουργούν σαν τονωτική ένεση για την αισθητική μας, ένα είναι το σίγουρο: οι γκαλερί της Αθήνας είναι ένας καλός λόγος, για να βγείτε από το σπίτι σας.

At the State of Concept you can meet new artists, at Genesis you can get acquainted with representational painting and at Atopos you can attend various interesting exhibitions. These are only a few reasons not to stay home.

Athens Biennale is also on our list which has been housing their program “Omonia” since the fall of 2015 at the abandoned “Bageion Hotel”, combining contemporary art with conferences that ta ckle current pressing issues.

Greek fashion showrooms inspire us to renew our wardrobe by supporting domestic production. Fashion showrooms such as Ioanna Kourbela’s in Plaka, Zeus & Dione in Kolonaki and Nikos Koulis on Filikis Eterias are proof that Greek fashion is still blooming. ● Με εντυπωσιακά line-ups, alternative διάθεση, φιλόξενους χώρους και τα τρία μεγάλα μουσικά φεστιβάλ Ejekt, Plissken, Rockwave. Μάλλον ξέρουμε τι θα κάνετε (και) φέτος το καλοκαίρι.

The music festivals, Ejekt, Plissken and Rockwave have promised us impressive line-ups, alternative atmospheres and hospitable venues, so I guess we all know what we’ll be doing this summer.

● Ο Μαραθώνιος επέστρεψε στη χώρα που τον γέννησε και με την τεράστια προσέλευση κοινού, το φιλανθρωπικό χαρακτήρα και την προώθηση του αθλητικού ιδεώδους, έδωσε το έναυσμα για τη διοργάνωση και περαιτέρω αγώνων δρόμου, όπως είναι ο Ημιμαραθώνιος, ο Lycabettus Run κτλ.

The Marathon has returned to where it belongs and it has inspired the organization of events that promote philanthropy and the spirit of sport ideals, such as the Half Marathon, Lycabettus Run etc. ● Δεν είναι μόνο οι τέχνες που προωθούνται από τα φεστιβάλ. Η επιστήμη και οι νέες τεχνολογίες γίνονται πιο προσιτές στο κοινό, χάρη στο Φεστιβάλ Επιστήμης και Καινοτομίας που διοργανώνεται στην Τεχνόπολη για τρίτη συνεχόμενη χρονιά.

Festivals don’t only promote the arts.

One can get acquainted with science and technology at the Athens Science festival which is held at Technopolis for a third year in a row. ● Πράγματι, οι κινηματογράφοι διανύουν τη δυσκολότερη φάση τους με το κλείσιμο των συνοικιακών να βρίσκεται σε έξαρση. Ευοίωνη όμως, η επικείμενη επαναλειτουργία του «Αττικόν» και του «Απόλλων» στη Σταδίου, καθώς και τα θερινά σινεμά, μερικά εκ των οποίων συμπεριλαμβάνονται στις λίστες με τα καλύτερα της Ευρώπης, ενώ το «Σινέ Θησείο» παραμένει σταθερά ο καλύτερος θερινός κινηματογράφος στον κόσμο.

Indeed, cinema theaters are struggling and everywhere we seem to look neighborhood theaters are shutting down.

However, it is promising that “Attikon” and “Apollon” on Stadiou Street reopened and it is very encouraging that most of our mythical summer cinemas still operate and that “Cine Thisio” is still considered to be the best summer cinema in the world.

● Τον τελευταίο καιρό, το street food βρίσκει τη θέση που του αξίζει. Με τα σουβλάκια του Κωστή στην Πλατεία Ειρήνης, το ανατολίτικο και οικονομικό Etnico στο Θησείο, το Ψαροnoid στο Χαλάνδρι και τo New York Sandiches στο Σύνταγμα -και πόσα ακόμα- φαίνεται πως το «φαγητό του δρόμου» έλειπε (δυστυχώς) από την Αθήνα.

Street food has become extremely popular lately. Just a few amongst the many new places that have opened up are Kostis on St. Irene’s Square, Ethnico in Thisio for Middle Eastern food at reasonable prices, Psaronoid in Haladri and New York Sandiches in Syntagma.

These all go to show that street food was something that (unfortunately) was missing from Athens.

● Όταν τα πιο old skool καφέ αναβιώνουν στην πόλη, ξαναβρίσκοντας το χαμένο τους εαυτό, δεν έχεις κανέναν λόγο να μείνεις μέσα Κυριακή πρωί. Παράδειγμα, το κλασικό Ζonar’s στη Βουκουρεστίου. Και ναι, πολλά από αυτά σερβίρουν και brunch!

Old skool cafés are reliving their glory days, giving you yet another reason to not sleep in on a Sunday morning. For example, the classic Zonar’s café on Voukourestiou Street. And, yes, many of these serve brunch as well. ● Πολλές γειτονιές της Αθήνας αναγεννιούνται, αποκτούν διαφορετικό χαρακτήρα και προσελκύουν κόσμο κι από άλλες περιοχές. Ποιος θα το πίστευε πριν από χρόνια ότι εν έτη 2016 θα βγαίναμε στο Κουκάκι, στα Πετράλωνα, στο Χαλάνδρι και στον Κεραμεικό; The revival of many old Athenian neighborhoods has been attracting people from all over the city. Who would have thought that we would be hanging out in Koukaki, Petralona, Halandri and Keramikos in 2016?

● Οι στοές της Αθήνας, όπως η στοά του Σπυρομήλιου με τα bistro της, η Λαιμού στη Σταδίου με τα μαγαζιά της και η Θεμιστοκλέους με τα ουζερί της, των οποίων η εμπορική εκμετάλλευση επεκτείνεται κι άλλο το 2016, δίνουν πνοή στο κέντρο και του προσδίδουν έναν πιο γραφικό χαρακτήρα.

All the old arcades in the city center, such as Spyromiliou arcade with its bistros, Laimou arcade on Stadiou and Themistokleous arcade, are all hidden treasures of Athens. ● Κι αν το clubbing στην πόλη βρίσκεται σε ύφεση, ακριβώς το ανάποδο συμβαίνει με τα cocktail bars, που ξεφυτρώνουν (ευτυχώς) σαν μανιτάρια σε όλες τις περιοχές της Αθήνας. Ξεχωρίσαμε τα Noel, The Clumsies και Baba Au Rum στο κέντρο, ενώ σταθερές αξίες αποτελούν τα Galaxy και Au Revoir.

Nightclubs have been slowly shutting down for a while now, but (thankfully) cocktail bars continue popping up all over Athens. Our current new favorites in the city center are Noel, The Clumsies and Baba Au Rum, whereas Galaxy and Au Revoir are all time classics.

● Η «Αθηναϊκή Ριβιέρα» κατά μήκος του Σαρωνικού, από το Φάληρο έως το Σούνιο, αποπνέει κοσμοπολίτικο αέρα και σε κάνει να αναρωτηθείς πόσες ακόμα ευρωπαϊκές πόλεις έχουν πρόσβαση σε καθαρά νερά και οργανωμένες παραλίες.

The “Athenian Riviera” that stretches out from Faliro to Cape Sounio exudes a cosmopolitan air and it makes you wonder how many other cities in Europe offer easy access to private beaches with certified clear waters. ● Το αττικό φως. Σκληρό, μεθυστικό, σχεδόν εκτυφλωτικό, δεν θα πάψει ποτέ να μαγεύει, να ενεργοποιεί, να ζαλίζει, να θεραπεύει, ντόπιους και μη, με τη μοναδικότητά του. Γιατί πώς αλλιώς θα μπορούσαμε να απολαύσουμε τα περισσότερα από τα παραπάνω, αν δεν λουζόμασταν από το αττικό φως; The sunlight of Attica. It’s intense, intoxicating and almost blinding, but it will never cease to dazzle, energize and, above all, heal locals and visitors. How else would we be able to enjoy everything mentioned above if we werenít graced on a daily basis with this one-ofa-kind sunlight?
