Κράτησε μόνο δέκα λεπτά. Μια ξαφνική βροχή από λευκές παγωμένες νιφάδες έκανε τους πάντες να κοιτάξουν έξω από τα παράθυρά τους. Και το αστείο ήταν πως ο ουρανός στο βάθος του ήταν πιο μπλε από ποτέ, αληθινά μπλε. Δύο μέρες πριν στην Αθήνα ξεπρόβαλαν δύο καμαρωτά, γιγαντιαία ουράνια τόξα. Η Madonna έχει πάψει να μιλάει για την πρώτη της αγάπη, πλέον είναι χωρισμένη από τον Guy Ritchie, είναι μητέρα για τα τρία παιδιά της, πρωταγωνιστεί στη νέα διαφημιστική καμπάνια του Louis Vuitton και το χρώμα των μαλλιών της παραμένει ίδιο εδώ και δύο χρόνια τουλάχιστον. Δύσκολοι καιροί για πρίγκηπες αλλά όχι και για πριΤο τρίτο της άλμπουμ υπό τον τίτλο “True γκήπισσες, ιδιαίτερα όταν αυτές μεγαλώνουν και Blue” το αφιέρωνε σε αυτήν - στην αληγίνονται βασίλισσες. Το “material girl” των 80’s, η θινή της αγάπη - τότε, εν έτει 1986, όταν “Madge” των 90’s και η καταξιωμένη πλέον βασίλισσα η Madonna αναφερόταν στον Sean Penn της ποπ μετράει δεκαετίες, επιτυχίες, αποτυχίες ως “the coolest guy in the universe” μέχρι που ήρθε η στιγμή όπου ο “μύθος” αυαλλά δεν παραδίδει τον τίτλο της σε καμία Britney Spears ή οποιαδήποτε άλλη wannabe λολίτα. --Madonna is officially divorced from Guy Ritchie; she is the mother of three children, stars in the latest Louis Vuitton advertising campaign and the color of her hair has remained the same for at least the past two years. “True Blue” was her third LP, dedicated to her then true love Sean Penn, in an era when she referred to him as “the coolest guy in the universe”, until that fortress fell apart along with the marriage, despite the album’s success.

The conclusions drawn from this: that everyone remembers their first love but usually no one likes to talk about it; that after a storm there’s always sunshine and that a silly song can be the turning point for the beginning of a sparkling career.

A girl with short, bushy peroxide hair can make a pop song sound like 50’s bubblegum and a timeless hit, despite the fact that most of the lyrics sound better in English than in their Greek translation, particularly the bit in “True Blue” that goes “your heart fits me like a glove”. But whatever you may want to write about Madonna, it is all eventually futile; nobody wants to speak badly of their first “love”.

The denim industry remains one of the most lucrative markets in the global economy although it has recently come under pressure, due to the global crisis of the economy.

Τι όμως κάνει τα jeans τόσο δημοφιλή; Η απάντηση είναι απλή και συνάμα σύνθετη. Τα jeans είναι πάντα στη μόδα, προσδιορίζουν με τον πιο απλό και ευθύ τρόπο την κοινωνική θέση μας, προσαρμόζονται εύκολα στην αισθητική μας, φοριούνται πάντα και παντού, είναι άνετα, πρακτικά και πάνω απ’ όλα μας κάνουν να νοιώθουμε πρωταγωνιστές της δικής μας μόδας. Τα jeans είναι σχεδόν πάντα ανθεκτικά, διαχρονικά και πολλές φορές δηλώνουν τον πιο σύγχρονο, με την έννοια του πρωτοπόρου, εαυτό μας. Τι όμως πήγε στραβά στη μέχρι πρόσφατα αλματώδη διάδοση της denim βιομηχανίας παγκοσμίως; Η απάντηση συνοψίζεται σε δύο λέξεις: Ασιατική εισβολή. Οι ασιατικές αγορές χαμηλού κόστους παραγωγής φαίνεται να έφεραν τα πάνω-κάτω στη διαδικασία και εξέλιξη της διεθνούς αγοράς. Πολλά από τα μεγάλα διεθνή labels μετέφεραν την παραγωγή τους εκτός Ευρώπης και Αμερικής, με δύο βασικές συνέπειες. Πρώτη τη χαμηλή ποιότητα στο τελικό προϊόν και δεύτερη την ομοιομορφία. Να λοιπόν ο πρώτος λόγος που κάνει πολλά από τα jeans σήμερα να μας φαίνονται τα ίδια και ταυτόχρονα να μην καταλαβαίνουμε τη διαφορά στην τιμή μεταξύ ενός ακριβού και ενός φτηνότερου jean που κατά τα άλλα μοιάζει να έχουν τα ίδια ποιοτικά χαρακτηριστικά. Ευτυχώς για όλους μας αυτό δεν υπήρξε ο κανόνας αλλά μια τάση που σιγά σιγά φαίνεται να ξεπερνιέται. Οι περισσότερες εταιρίες κατάλαβαν το λάθος τους και σήμερα προσπαθούν με κάθε τρόπο να επαναφέρουν την πραγματική υψηλή αξία του προϊόντος τους. Έτσι λοιπόν δίνουν μεγαλύτερη σημασία όχι πια στο κόστος παραγωγής, αλλά στη διαφοροποίηση από τους ανταγωνιστές τους που θα τους αποφέρει περισσότερους φανατικούς και ευχαριστημένους καταναλωτές. Η “πράσινη” πλευρά των jeans με φιλικά προς το περιβάλλον υφάσματα (organic cotton) και τεχνικές πλυσίματος, η αντιμετώπιση των jeans σαν σύγχρονα έργα τέχνης και η επιστράτευση της φαντασίας για πραγματικά καινοτόμο σχεδιασμό είναι μερικές από τις λύσεις που προτείνουν οι σημαντικότερες εταιρίες για να δελεάσουν ξανά το κοινό τους. Αν προσθέσει κανείς τις εντυπωσιακές συνεργασίες με κορυφαίους

σχεδιαστές μόδας αλλά και με σημαντικά brands από διαφορετικούς τομείς της βιομηχανίας (αξεσουάρ, τσάντες, υποδήματα), εύκολα συνειδητοποιεί την εγρήγορση των μεγάλων εταιριών ώστε να ενδυναμώσουν ξανά την πιο γλυκιά καταναλωτική ανάγκη σε όλους μας: Να τρέξουμε ξανά να αγοράσουμε το καταπληκτικότερο τζιν! Ξανά και ξανά!

--But what makes jeans so popular?

The answer is both simple and complex. Jeans are always in fashion, they are a simple and straightforward way to identify our social position, are easily adapted to any aesthetics, are constantly worn everywhere, are comfortable, practical and above all make us feel like players in the world of fashion. Jeans are almost always hard wearing over time and reflect the most forward thinking side of ourselves.

What went wrong and put a halt to the ever growing popularization of the industry worldwide? The answer is short, in fact it’s just two words: Asian Invasion. The Asian markets and their low production costs have drastically changed the face of the market. Many big players have moved their production facilities outside Europe and America and this move resulted in two important repercussions: The drop in quality and uniformity. This explains why jeans today look similar, while price differences between a cheap and an expensive pair seem inexplicable since quality appears to be the same. Thankfully the labels seem to have realized that this move was wrong and are trying to attach value to their products again. What they are focusing on now is not low production costs but standing out from their competitors and thus gaining more followers. Environmentally friendly jeans (organic cotton), different washing techniques and viewing jeans as pieces of art are some of the solutions offered by labels in an attempt to gain back their audience. Collaborations with top fashion designers and important brands from other fields in the industry (accessories, shoes and handbags) also demonstrate the attempt to reinforce the need in all of us to buy the best pair of jeans ever! Again and again!

Μετά την επιτυχή συμμετοχή του στο 25ο Documentary Festival στο Κάσελ που του χάρισε το βραβείο Golden Cube, ο Στέφανος Τσιβόπουλος παρουσιάζει ένα νέο έργο στη γκαλερί Α.Δ., στη δεύτερη ατομική του έκθεση στην Ελλάδα με τίτλο “The Real The Story The Storyteller”. //

After winning the Golden Cube award at the 25th Documentary Festival in Kassel, Stefanos Tsivopoulos is showcasing his latest work at A.D. gallery with his second solo exhibition in Greece, entitled “The Real The Story The Storyteller”. Το νέο έργο του Στέφανου Τσιβόπουλου “Untitled (In Plato’s Cave)” είναι μία βίντεο εγκατάσταση διπλής προβολής, όπου το παλιό και το σύγχρονο έρχονται σε αντιπαράθεση. Η πρώτη προβολή παρουσιάζει έναν πολεμικό ανταποκριτή με χακί ρούχα που μοιάζουν με στολή να δουλεύει στο μοντάζ ασπρόμαυρων ρωσικών και γερμανικών γυρισμάτων του ’40. Στη δεύτερη προβολή ο ίδιος άνδρας, με καθημερινά ρούχα κι ένα παλαιστινιακό μαντήλι στο λαιμό, μοντάρει έγχρωμες σκηνές από τον πόλεμο στο Ιράκ μέσα σε ένα σύγχρονο στούντιο. Παρότι η σύγκρουση ανάμεσα στις δύο εικόνες είναι εμφανής, υπάρχουν κάποια ενοποιητικά στοιχεία (το έγχρωμο φιλμ, η μουσική) που προσδίδουν στον κεντρικό χαρακτήρα μία αέναη υπόσταση, μετατρέποντάς τον σε έναν ταξιδιώτη του χρόνου. Όπως και στο έργο “Untitled (The Remake)” που παρουσίασε πριν από δύο χρόνια στη 1η Μπιενάλε της Αθήνας, έτσι και τώρα ο Τσιβόπουλος αντλεί έμπνευση από αρχειακό υλικό. Με την χαρακτηριστική του εμμονή στη λεπτομέρεια, δημιουργεί ακριβείς αναπαραστάσεις των χώρων όπου διαδραματίζεται η ιστορία. Τα γυρίσματα έγιναν σε ένα ανακατασκευασμένο στούντιο στο Βερολίνο, αναφορά στο στούντιο της Geyer Berlin, το εργαστήριο κινηματογραφικής παραγωγής που χρησιμοποιήθηκε από το Υπουργείο Προπαγάνδας των Ναζί. Για την πρώτη σκηνή, όλο το περιβάλλον, από τα εργαλεία, τον προτζέκτορα, το τραπέζι του μοντάζ, μέχρι τα περιοδικά είναι από τη δεκαετία του ’40, με εξοπλισμό δανεισμένο από το μουσείο κινηματογράφου του Βερολίνου. Το έργο εστιάζει στον τρόπο που τα νέα μέσα διαμορφώνουν την άποψη των ανθρώπων για τον κόσμο και την αντίληψη τους για την πραγματικότητα. Όπως σημειώνει και η κριτικός Jennifer Allen, η ίδια η διαδικασία παρακολούθησης του πολέ-

μου, μέσα από τη ματιά αρχικά του κάμεραμαν και κατόπιν του μοντέρ, πριν φτάσει στο θεατή, αποτελεί μία μορφή μαζικής ηδονοβλεψίας. Ο Στέφανος Τσιβόπουλος ολοκλήρωσε την παραγωγή του “Untitled (In Plato’s Cave)” στα πλαίσια του Residency Project Studio Berlin, ως υπότροφος του Ολλανδικού Κέντρου Τεχνών. Το 2009 θα λάβει μέρος στη Μπιενάλε του Λίμερικ και στο Residency Platform Garanti στην Κωνσταντινούπολη.

Tsivopoulos’ latest double video installation “Untitled (In Plato’s Cave)” the old and the contemporary are juxtaposed. The first projection shows a man dressed as a war correspondent editing black & white Russian and German footage from the 40s. In the second projection that same man wearing casual clothes is depicted in a contemporary studio editing color footage of the Iraq war. The differences between the two images are more than apparent, there are however certain elements linking them.

The music, the color film, all attach to the character a perpetual quality, making him a type of time traveler.

Similarly to his work “Untitled (The Remake)”, showcased two years ago at the 1st Athens Biennial, Tsivopoulos draws inspiration from archive material. With his characteristic attention to detail, he creates exact representations of the story’s settings. The filming took place in a revamped studio in Berlin, a reference to the Geyer Berlin movie production labs that were used by the Nazi ministry of Information. All the artifacts and settings for the first scene, the equipment, projector, the editing table and even the magazines are from the 40s, with part of the equipment borrowed from Berlin’s Cinema museum.

The work focuses on the ways new media shape people’s opinion and their perception of reality. According to critic Jennifer Allen, the process of watching the war, through the eyes of the editor and initially the cameraman, is a type of mass voyeurism.

“Untitled (In Plato’s Cave)” was completed as part of the Residency Project Studio Berlin, with scholarship from The Dutch Centre of Arts. In 2009 Stefanos Tsivopoulos will be taking part in the Limerick Biennale and the Residency Platform Garanti in Istanbul.

τους Bullion και Paul White. Τι να περιμένουμε; Ψάχναμε εταιρεία για το άλλο project μου που λέγεται Souleance, όταν ένα φίλος, ο Blackjoy, μου σύστησε τον Alex Chase. Εκείνος έδειξε αμέσως ενδιαφέρον, αλλά για τη δουλειά μου ως Fulgeance. Έμεινα έκπληκτος, γιατί ήμουν μεγάλος οπαδός της One Handed από όταν κυκλοφόρησε σε αυτήν ο Bullion. Ο Alex είναι καταπληκτικός τύπος, εκτιμάει αυτό που κάνω και ξέρει τι θέλει. Το EP θα λέγεται Smartbanggin, θα “βαράει” έξυπνα και θα περιλαμβάνει περισσότερα κρουστά... Ο ήχος θα είναι πιο γήινος, με μεγαλύτερη υφή και θα πλαισιωθεί από ένα remix από καλλιτέχνη της Warp! Δεν μπορώ να πω ποιόν (όχι, δεν θα είναι ο Fly Lo)!

Πρόσφατα έπαιξες στην πόλη Ann Arbor στο Michigan, το σπίτι του Dabrye και του Samiyam, πώς ήταν σαν εμπειρία; Ήταν πολύ όμορφα αν και έπαιξα γιά μόλις 50 άτομα. Η πόλη είναι γεμάτη ανεξάρτητους καλλιτέχνες που συνθέτουν techno και hip hop παράλληλα. Μου άρεσε πολύ Το 2008 επιβεβαίωσε πως η νέα ο Charles Trees, ένας φίλος του Kadence έκφανση του hip-hop ήρθε για να μείνει: Beatstrumentals και καυτές MC. Πρέπει να τους ψάξετε, είναι νέοι, μοναδικοί και φρέσκοι! Τους έχω αφιερώσει μπασογραμμές που αντηχούν από ένα κομμάτι στο Smartbanggin που λέγετο Λος Άντζελες, το Άμστερνταμ, ται απλά ANN ARBOR! Η Γλασκώβη είναι τη Γλασκώβη και το Παρίσι, μέχρι εξίσου εκπληκτική, με το Ballers’στο επίμια μικρή πόλη της Βορειοδυτικής κεντρο. Εκεί γνώρισα τους Joe (Ballers), Γαλλίας, όπου ο Fulgeance μαJackmaster (Wireblock), Rustie και γειρεύει τη δική του συμβολή στη σκηνή. Οι Black Athena έμαθαν πε- Freekmovers, πολύ ενδιαφέροντες τύπους. Πώς ασχολήθηκες με την παραγωγή και ποιοι ήταν εκείνοι που σε ενέπνευσαν; Ξεκίνησα παίζοντας μπάσο και στη συνέχεια ασχολήθηκα με το DJing μιξάροντας house, funk και disco. Τότε μπήκε το hip-hop στη ζωή μου με καλλιτέχνες όπως Tribe, Q Tip, The Roots, Pete Rock, Premier και Jay Dee. Δεν μπορώ να πω πως το hip-hop ήταν το αρχικό μου έναυσμα, γιατί ξεκίνησα συνθέτοντας μια μίξη από funk / groove / electro. Οι παραγωγοί που με επηρέασαν και συνεχίζουν να με επηρεάζουν είναι οι Dabrye, Prefuse 73, Ammon Contact, Aphex Twin, η λίστα είναι πολύ μεγάλη! Αλλά ήταν η jazz και το jazz funk που με ώθησαν να κάνω groovy μουσική, καλλιτέχνες σαν τους Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Ramsey Lewis κλπ. Πριν μερικές εβδομάδες έπαιξες live για πρώτη φορά στην Αθήνα, στα πλαίσια του Cloud City, πώς σου φάνηκε; Ήταν μία πολύ ωραία βραδιά σε έναν πολύ ωραίο χώρο! Και εκεί γνώρισα ανθρώπους με πίστη στους νέους ήχους αλλά και με μουσικό παρελθόν. Όλοι ήταν πολύ ευγενικοί οπότε αυτό βοήθησε στο να παίξω και να περάσω καλά! Γνώρισα πολλούς cool ανθρώπους, ανάμεσά τους τον MC Yinka με τον οποίο θέλω να συνεργαστώ. Συμπάθησα πολύ τους Έλληνες, δυστυχώς όμως ο χρόνος μου στην Αθήνα ήταν πολύ λίγος! Θα πρέπει να ξανάρθω σύντομα!

--How did you get into production?

Which producers influenced you in the beginning?

I played bass before getting into DJing house, funk and disco... then hip-hop hit me with Tribe, Q Tip, The Roots, Pete Rock, Premier and Jay Dee. I won't say I'm a hip-hop influenced artist, because I started with funk / groove / electro and I chose my own way of mixing up the music but I was and am influenced by artists like Dabrye, Prefuse 73, Ammon Contact, Aphex Twin...the list is big! But it’s jazz and jazz funk that persuaded me to make groovy music: Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Ramsey Lewis etc...

You’re about to release on One Handed in London, home to Bullion and Paul White; how did that come about and what should we expect?

We were searching for a label for the Souleance project and a friend, Blackjoy, introduced me to Alex Chase. He was interested ...but in Fulgeance. I was surprised because I'm a big fan of One Handed since Bullion plus Alex is such a cool guy, really feeling what I do and sure about his wants. This EP will be called Smartbanggin, and will be more banging and smart and more percussive! Also it’ll have a rooty sound, with texture and dirt... plus an awesome remix from a Warp artist!! Can't say who yet (no, not Fly Lo)!

You’ve recently performed in Ann Arbor, original stomping ground of fellow beatsmiths Dabrye and Samiyam as well as at Glasgow’s cult Ballers Social Club; what were those nights like?

Ann Arbor was really exciting, even if I only played to 50 people; the city is full of great indie artists making both techno and hip hop. I was booked by a guy called Charles Trees, a friend of Kadence MC. You have to check these guys as they’re unique and fresh! There’s also a track called ANN ARBOR on the Smartbanggin EP dedicated to them! Glasgow is funky fresh too; Ballers’ nights are bouncing Scotland and the new hip hop movement. I met Joe (Ballers), Jackmaster (Wireblock), Rustie, Freekmovers; they were all such interesting people. The kids there are fresh and curious; they just want something new they can dance to!

And you recently made your live debut in Athens at Cloud City; how was that for you?

It was a great night, in a great place!

Again, I met people who believe in new sounds and have a musical background.

Everybody was really kind too, so when you get that it's easy to play well and have fun! I met lots of cool cats including MC Yinka, with whom I'm planning a collab soon; I really appreciated Greek people but the trip was too short so I have to come again soon!

Είναι ίσως το περιοδικό που αγαπάει περισσότερο τα jeans και η αλήθεια είναι οτι του πάνε πολύ. Ο λόγος για το γερμανικής προέλευσης αλλά δίγλωσσο (γερμανικά-αγγλικά) j’n’c που εδώ και μία δεκαετία παρακολουθεί και αναμεταδίδει ό,τι νεότερο γύρω από το jeanswear. Συναντήσαμε την αρχισυντάκτριά του Ilona Marx στην πρόσφατη έκθεση Βread & Βutter και της ζητήσαμε να μας κάνει μια σύντομη εισαγωγή στον denim κόσμο του j’n’c. // J’N’C, Germany’s bi-lingual fashion magazine really loves jeans and it makes perfect sense; for a decade now the magazine has been closely following and reporting on all the latest in jeanswear. We met the chief editor Ilona Marx at the recent Bread & Butter tradeshow and got her to give us the lowdown. Πώς ξεκίνησε το J’N’C; Ξεκινήσαμε πριν από δέκα χρόνια, σαν ένα εμπορικό περιοδικό. Θέλαμε να δημιουργήσουμε ένα περιοδικό που θα παρέχει πληροφορίες για το παρασκήνιο της βιομηχανίας της μόδας, ενώ παράλληλα θα φαίνεται όμορφο και προοδευτικό. Ποιοι είναι οι άνθρωποι πίσω από το project; Δύο εκδότες (Rainer Schlatmann και Uwe Schaufler), ένας σταθερός συντάκτης (Andreas Grueter), εγώ ως αρχισυντάκτρια και πολλοί ακόμη freelance συνεργάτες, συντάκτες, φωτογράφοι, γραφίστες και εικονογράφοι. Σε ποια πόλη είναι η βάση σας και σε ποια συνοικία; Τι ηλικίας είναι οι συνεργάτες του περιοδικού; Η βάση μας βρίσκεται σε μια μικρή πόλη μεταξύ Ντύσελντοφ και Κολωνίας. Είναι το τέλειο μέρος για να δουλεύει κανείς, μπορείς να συγκεντρωθείς πλήρως αφού δεν έχει καθόλου διασκέδαση! Οι περισσότεροι συνεργάτες μας είναι γύρω στα 30.

Πώς βλέπετε την παγκόσμια οικονομική κρίση; Επηρεάζει το χώρο της μόδας και κατ’ επέκταση το περιοδικό σας; Ποια είναι η δική σας στάση; Μέχρι στιγμής ήμασταν αρκετά τυχεροί και δεν μας έχει επηρεάσει ιδιαίτερα. Μπορείς όμως να το νιώσεις στην ατμόσφαιρα, ειδικά στις εβδομάδες μόδας. Οι εταιρείες είναι ιδιαίτερα προσεκτικές αυτό τον καιρό. Το πλάνο μας είναι να βελτιωθούμε… χωρίς πανικό.

--How did J’N’C start?

We started 10 years ago, based on a trade magazine. We wanted to invent a magazine that at the same time provides background information about the fashion business, and also looks good and progressive.

Who are the people behind this project?

Two publishers (Rainer Schlatmann and Uwe Schaufler), one steady editor (Andreas Grueter), myself as editor in chief and lots of freelance editors, photographers, graphic designers and illustrators.

Where are you based, which city, which area of the city? What is the age range of the people working in your magazine?

We are based in a small town between Duesseldorf and Cologne. It is the perfect place to work, you can concentrate because there is no entertainment at all!

Most of the people working for as are around the age of 30.

What music do you listen to in the office while working?

To be honest, we do not listen to music, because it’s hard to work on a text then.

How do you see the global crisis? Affecting fashion, affecting your magazine? What is your attitude towards it?

So far, we were quite lucky and it didn’t affect us that much. But you can feel it everywhere, especially during fashion weeks. Companies are extremely cautious at the moment. Our plan is to try to get better... and not to panic.

Καλεσμένοι της Nike στο Παρίσι είχαμε την ευκαιρία να δούμε πρώτοι από κοντά την ολοκαίνουρια μίνι σειρά sneakers η οποία, βασισμένη σε παλαιότερα μοντέλα, ανακαλύπτει τη δύναμη των χρωμάτων και προκαλεί με το εντυπωσιακό design. Τo παριζιάνικο Nike studio φόρεσε τα καλά του και εμείς δοκιμάσαμε τα νέα Nike. // Ozon had the opportunity to get a sneak peak of Nike’s new sneakers mini-series which, based on earlier models, showcases the power of color and stunning design. The Parisian Nike studio wore it well, while we got to try the new Nikes. Η 16η Μαρτίου 2009 θα είναι η μέρα κυκλοφορίας τριών νέων μοντέλων της Nike που θα γίνουν κλασσικά: το Hi-Jack, το Air Offense και το Air Zenyth. Με μια συνταγή που εμπεριέχει διαφορετικούς χρωματικούς συνδυασμούς και υλικά, αυτά τα τρία μοντέλα θα κατακτήσουν το Μιλάνο, το Παρίσι και βέβαια την Αθήνα. “ Έχει να κάνει με τη χρήση δεξιοτεχνίας σε νέα σχήματα και φόρμες” δηλώνει ο επικεφαλής του εμπορικού τμήματος, Marco Murillo. “Τα νέα σχέδια αντλούν επιρροές από παλιά μοντέλα, κάνοντας χρήση χρωμάτων και υλικών που δεν έχουν ξαναχρησιμοποιηθεί”. Το Hi-Jack είναι το πλησιέστερο σχέδιο σε εκείνο που χρησιμοποιήθηκε στην πρώτη γυναικεία street γραμμή της Nike, την Freestyle Collection. Με ανεπτυγμένη σόλα με το κλασσικό λογότυπο της Nike και υλικό από αλεξίπτωτο που χρησιμοποιήθηκε και στο αυθεντικό hi-top, αυτό το σχέδιο βγαίνει σε 100 διαφορετικά χρώματα. Όπως είπε και ο Murillo: “Tα εσωτερικά στοιχεία του παπουτσιού έχουν τελειοποιηθεί για να του δώσουν ένα πιο αεροδυναμικό σχήμα”. Σουέντ, δέρμα και το rip-stop νάιλον της Nike αποτελούν τα βασικά υλικά του Air Zenyth. Τα shoe airbag στοιχεία που χαρακτηρίζουν το μοντέλο αποτελούν σαφή αναφορά στα Air Max One που κυκλοφόρησαν το 1987. Το Air Offence πιάνει τα αντρικά και γυναικεία στανταρ για το streetwear. Εμπνευσμένα από το μπασκετικό μοντέλο Vandal του 1984, τα Air Offence διατη-

ρούν μια σύγχρονη αισθητική, εμπνευσμένη όμως από την παράδοση της Nike.

--March 16th 2009 will see the release of three Nike designs set to become classics of our time, the Hi-Jack, Air Offense and Air Zenyth. Using a mass of color combinations and a mix of Nike formulated materials, these three designs are likely to become a fixed feature on streets from Milan to Berlin and of course Athens.

“It’s about bringing superior craftsmanship to these new shapes and forms” Senior Product Merchandiser, Marco Murillo, told us. “These are new shoes influenced by past models with color combinations and crafted materials not yet used in any other design”.

The Hi-Jack is the design closest to the original found in Nike’s first street-orientated shoes for women, the Freestyle Collection. A developed sole and embellished leather circle at the ankle both hold the signature “swoosh” and the Nike name.

Stitched against parachute material, also used in the original hi-top, this design is now available in over almost 100 different colors. Built on a new last which, as Murillo explains “has refined the inner foundations of the shoe to make for a more streamlined shape”.

Suede, leather and Nike’s rip-stop nylon combine to make the Air Zenyth; its visible shoe airbag touches on elements from the Air Max One released in 1987 but again is held within a more refined shape.

Air Offence works to meet both men’s and women’s standards of street wear; this low top is inspired by the 1984 basketball shoe Vandal while holding all signature qualities of current release. A hidden air unit, metal eyelets, heel tab and design lines on the upper part of the shoe keep Air Offence in a heritage class while remaining true to current Nike elements.

Λίγα μέτρα πιο κάτω από το καφενείο με τους ναργιλέδες που είχε επιλέξει σαν ένα από τα σημεία παρουσίασης της έκθεσης “ Ώρες λειτουργίας” πριν από ενάμιση χρόνο περίπου, βρίσκεται πλέον η αίθουσα τέχνης Ρεβέκκα Καμχή. Στο νεοκλασικό κτήριο της οδού Λεωνίδου κυριαρχούν αυτές τι μέρες τα “φωτισμένα” έργα των Tracey Emin, Guy Limone, Ντιάννας Μαγκανιά, Jorge Prado και Άγγελου Πλέσσα. Η ιδέα της έκθεσης προέκυψε τυχαία, από αντίστοιχα έργα που είδε η Ρεβέκκα Καμχή τον τελευταίο καιρό σε εκθέσεις, art fairs και μουσεία. Πέραν από την προφανή σχέση του φωτός με την τέχνη, εκείνο που την ενδιέφερε περισσότερο ήταν η ατμόσφαιρα που μπορούσε να δημιουργηθεί από μία τέτοια παρουσίαση. Τον πρώτο τόνο δίνει το νέον του Άγγελου Πλέσσα που βρίσκεται αναρτημένο στην είσοδο του χώρου και αναγράφει “Electricity comes from another planet”, ενώ η διαδραστική του σελίδα “ZigZagPhilosophy.com” είναι εμπνευσμένη από το νυχτερινό ορίζοντα όπως φαίνεται από το μπαλκόνι του καλλιτέχνη. Με νέον και τον χαρακτηριστικό γραφικό χαρακτήρα της Tracey Emin και η φράση Η γκαλερί Ρεβέκκα Καμχή ξεκίνησε “This is another place”, ενώ ο Jorge Prado συμμετέχει με ένα συνδρομητικό έργο, επίσημα πλέον το πρόγραμμα της στέλνοντας με το ταχυδρομείο μία λάστο νέο της χώρο στο Μεταξουρμπα κάθε μήνα, για ένα χρόνο και ο Guy γείο, με μία ομαδική έκθεση όπου Limone τοποθετεί εικόνες από την Ελλάκεντρικό θέμα είναι το φως. and Angelo Plessas. The idea for the exhibition was a random one, inspired by works Rebecca Camhi had recently come across at exhibitions, art fairs and museums. The – obvious - art and light relationship aside, she was really interested in the atmosphere that can be created by such a presentation.

Entering the space you are faced with Angelo Plessas’ neon construction that reads “Electricity comes from another planet”, while his interactive webpage “ZigZagPhilosophy.com” is inspired by the late night horizon as viewed from the artist’s balcony. Tracey Emin uses neon for her exhibit which reads” This is another place”, Jorge Prado chooses to send by post one bulb per month as part of his work and Guy Limone puts images of Greece on neon. DeAnna Maganias is responsible for one of the most sensitive works presented: entitled “Bathed in Light”, that particular phrase is written on paper using Braille, in an attempt to explore the different ways of “seeing”.

Her other exhibit “You Live with someone called by your name” is placed on the wall outside the gallery, thus giving the street a theatrical feel.

Rebecca Camhi revealed that, apart from the gallery’s main use as an exhibition space, she wants to contribute towards environmental awareness issues regarding the area, hosting seminars and other events to promote the viability of the city.

The next exhibition at Rebecca Camhi Gallery will take place in March and will feature American artist Lilly Ludlow.

Προλογίζοντας τη συνέντευξη που μας παραχώρησε στο προηγούμενο τεύχος, είχαμε αναφερθεί στην ευθύτητα των δηλώσεών του και την αδιαφορία του απέναντι σε κάθε είδους διπλωματία. Σε διάστημα λιγότερο του ενός μηνός, ο Τσέχος γλύπτης David Cerný δικαίωσε για μία ακόμα φορά τη φήμη του ως μία από τις πιο προβοκατόρικες μορφές της σύγχρονης εικαστικής σκηνής. //

In the introduction to the interview we did with Czech sculptor David Cerný in our last issue, we highlighted how straight forward he can be and what a stranger he is to diplomacy. Within a month of that mention he has once again managed to remind us the reason he is considered to be one of the most provocative artists today.

άλλωστε γνωστός για την θετική του στάση προς την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση, κάτι που τον έχει φέρει πολλές φορές σε αντιπαράθεση με τον ευρώ-σκεπτικιστή πρόεδρο της χώρας του, Vaclav Klaus. Στην ερώτηση αν ξεχωρίζει κάποιο κομμάτι του έργου, μας απάντησε χιουμοριστικά “Την Αγγλία”, υποδεικνύοντας τη κενή θέση - αναφορά στη γενικότερη απουσία του απέχοντος από το Ευρώ Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου.

--The beginning of 2009 saw the Czech Republic taking on the EU presidency; an installation entitled “Entropa” was unveiled as part of the festivities that followed.

For this commission David Cerný brought together 27 artists from the 27 EU members and asked them to create a sculpture that was based around stereotypes for each of those countries. The work, which resembles a plastic snap-out modelling kit, is on display at the entrance on the European Council building in Brussels and sparked controversy from day one.

Bulgaria were particularly incensed by the installation which portrays the country as a Turkish toilet and made Czech Republic Deputy Prime Minister Alexandr Vondra publicly apologize and order for that part of the installation to be covered. Other countries that appeared in a controversial manner include France, presented as a country on strike, the Netherlands, depicted as a string of minarets submerged by a flood, and Greece looking entirely burnt down by forest fires.

The scandal got bigger when it was revealed that the artists supposedly commissioned for the artwork were imaginary, with David Cerný completing the work with the help of just a couple of associates.

During a short talk we had with the artist, he expressed his sadness for the way his work was received and stressed that he never expected a reaction to such a degree. He also mentioned that the work is not political and should be viewed with a sense of humor. The artist after all is a well known supporter of the EU and has publicly opposed the country’s Euro-sceptic president Vaclav Klaus. When asked about his favorite part of the installation, he playfully pointed to the empty space left for the UK, a reference to the country’s general absence and Euroskepticism.

Η είσοδος του 2009 σήμανε την έναρξη της Tσέχικης προεδρίας στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση, και κατ’ επέκτασην την παρουσίαση του έργου “Entropa”, της επίσημης ανάθεσης της χώρας στα πλαίσια του εορτασμού της παραμονής της στη θέση αυτή. Ο David Cerný ανέλαβε να συγκεντρώσει 27 καλλιτέχνες από τις ισάριθμες χώρες – μέλη της Ε.Ε. για να δημιουργήσουν ένα γλυπτό με αναφορές στις στερεοτυπικές αντιλήψεις γύρω από τις χώρες αυτές. Το έργο, που θυμίζει πλαίσιο με κομμάτια συναρμολογούμενων παιχνιδιών, βρίσκεται στην είσοδο του μεγάρου του Συμβουλίου Υπουργών στις Βρυξέλλες και από την πρώτη μέρα προκάλεσε αντιδράσεις. Οι λόγοι ευνόητοι, η Βουλγαρία που διαμαρτυρήθηκε έντονα από την αρχή παρουσιάζεται ως μία μεγάλη τούρκικη τουαλέτα, αναγκάζοντας τον Τσέχο υπουργό Ευρωπαϊκών Υποθέσεων Alexandr Vondra να ζητήσει επίσημα συγνώμη, ενώ λίγες μέρες αργότερα ένα μαύρο κάλυμμα έκρυψε το συγκεκριμένο κομμάτι. Και άλλες χώρες όμως παρουσιάστηκαν με αμφιλεγόμενο τρόπο: η Γαλλία καλυμμένη με ένα πανό που γράφει “απεργία”, η Ολλανδία πλημμυρισμένη, με τις κορυφές των μιναρέδων να εξέχουν, ενώ η Ελλάδα είναι ολοκληρωτικά κατεστραμμένη από τις πυρκαγιές. Το σκάνδαλο έγινε διπλό όταν αποκαλύφθηκε ότι όλοι οι συμμετέχοντες καλλιτέχνες είναι φανταστικά πρόσωπα, αποκυήματα της φαντασίας του Cerný, που δημιούργησε το έργο μόνος, με τη βοήθεια μερικών φίλων του. Πόσα έργα τέχνης μπορεί να χωρέσει ένας τοίχος; “Εξαρτάται από τον τρόπο παρουσίασης” είναι η απάντηση που μας δίνει η έκθεση “To the wall” στο Kunsthal Charlottenborg στην Κοπεγχάγη, όπου τα έργα των συμμετεχόντων καλλιτεχνών επεμβαίνουν κυριολεκτικά στους τοίχους του εκθεσιακού χώρου. // How many works of art can fit on a wall? “ It depends on the presentation” according to the organizers of the “To the wall” exhibition that takes place in the Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen and in which artists have been invited to intervene on the exhibition space’s walls. Η πρωτότυπη έκθεση που πραγματοποιείται αυτό τον καιρό στη Δανέζικη πρωτεύουσα παίζει με την καθιερωμένη αντίληψη για τον τρόπο παρουσίασης των έργων. Η Maria Gadegaard, διευθύντρια του Kunsthal Charlottenborg, κάλεσε σαράντα καλλιτέχνες να επιτεθούν στους ύψους πέντε μέτρων λευκούς τοίχους του ιδρύματος με όποιο μέσο θέλουν. Σαν αποτέλεσμα, μεγάλα και έντονα έργα που κυριαρχούν στα δωμάτια συνυπάρχουν με πολύ μικρά και διακριτικά σχέδια, που απαιτούν την ιδιαίτερη προσοχή και αφοσίωση του θεατή. Η έκθεση δεν έθεσε κανένα περιορισμό ως προς τη θεματολογία, μόνος κανόνας ήταν η δημιουργία των έργων κατευθείαν πάνω στους τοίχους. Οι καλλιτέχνες εισήλθαν στο χώρο στις 5 Ιανουαρίου και είχαν το περιθώριο να ολοκληρώσουν τις δημιουργίες τους μέχρι τις 25 του ιδίου μήνα. Από τα μέσα Ιανουαρίου ο εκθεσιακός χώρος άνοιξε τις πόρτες του, δίνοντας στο κοινό την ευκαιρία να δει τους δημιουργούς εν ώρα εργασίας και να παρακολουθήσει την εξέλιξη του εγχειρήματος. Το Kunsthal Charlottenborg συνεχίζει με αυτή την έκθεση το πρόγραμμά του, στοχεύοντας πάντα να αποτελεί σημείο συνάντησης δημιουργών και επισκεπτών με επίκεντρο τη σύγχρονη τέχνη και να συνδέσει τα καλλιτεχνικά δρώμενα της Δανίας με εκείνα της διεθνούς εικαστικής σκηνής. Η έκθεση “To the wall” θα διαρκέσει μέχρι τις 15 Μαρτίου 2009.

--The original exhibition currently taking place in the Danish capital plays around with traditional concepts of presentation.

Maria Gadegaard, director of the Kun-

sthal Charlottenborg, invited forty five artists to attack the space’s five metre high walls in any way they chose. Artists utilized brushes, pencils, ballpoint pens and even marker pens to create their works in the building’s 25 rooms.

Each artist’s space was not predetermined and was instead agreed between the artists themselves, according to the needs of each work. This created a combination of large imposing artworks sitting comfortably next to smaller, delicate ones. There were no restrictions regarding the theme and the only prerequisite was for the work to be on the actual wall.

The artists entered the space on the 5th of January and were given until the 25th the same month to complete their works.

From mid January the doors opened, giving visitors the chance to watch the artists in action and the development of their work.

The goal of the Kunsthal Charlottenborg is to become a meeting point for artists and art lovers interested in contemporary art, while being the link of the country’s local scene with the international one. “To the wall” runs until March the 15th.

Το σημαντικότερο tradeshow street και urban μόδας στην Ευρώπη αποχαιρετά τη Βαρκελώνη μετά από 8 συνεχόμενες περιόδους και επιστρέφει στη βάση του. Το μέλλον ανήκει στο Βερολίνο. // Nothing remains the same and everything needs a change. The most important street and urban fashion tradeshow in Europe bade farewell to Barcelona after 8 consecutive years and returned to base. The future belongs to Berlin. Το ΟΖΟΝ έδωσε για μια ακόμα φορά το παρόν στη δυναμικότερη εμπορική έκθεση μόδας, την Bread & Butter. Λιγότεροι εκθέτες, περισσότερος χώρος για όλους, περιορισμένος σε σχέση με το πρόσφατο παρελθόν αριθμός επισκεπτών, αδυναμία διαμόρφωσης νέων τάσεων και όλοι περίμεναν τη μεγάλη είδηση. Και αυτή δεν άργησε να έρθει από τα χείλη του πολυμήχανου εμπνευστή της έκθεσης Karl Heinz Müller (πρόσφατα είχαμε δημοσιεύσει μια συνέντευξή του) ο οποίος μπροστά στα μάτια εκατοντάδων δημοσιογράφων από όλο τον κόσμο σήκωσε το χέρι του για να αποχαιρετήσει την Βαρκελώνη. Η ανακοίνωση της επιστροφής στην πατρίδα, το Βερολίνο, βύθισε τους οικοδεσπότες Καταλανούς σε θλίψη, ανακούφισε τα διεθνή brands που επιζητούσαν μια αλλαγή πλαισίου και σηματοδότησε την ανάγκη επαναπροσδιορισμού τόσο του ίδιου του tradeshow όσο και των περισσότερων αντίστοιχων σημαντικών εκθέσεων ανά τον κόσμο. Η οικονομική κρίση δεν γνωρίζει σύνορα και επιδρά απέναντι και στους δυνατότερους. --Once again OZON took part in the most dynamic fashion tradeshow: Bread & Butter. This time around there were fewer exhibitors, but more space for everyone and it was smaller when you take into account the recent number of visitors, unable to shape new trends and everyone waited for some big news. It soon came from the lips of ingenious inspirer Karl Heinz Müller (with whom we recently published an interview) who, before the eyes of hundreds of journalists from around the world, lifted his hand to wave goodbye to Barcelona.

The announcement of the show’ s return home to Berlin plunged the Catalan hosts into sadness, but relieved the international brands that wanted a change of context and marked the need to redefine both the tradeshow and other equivalent exhibitions around the world. The financial crisis knows no borders and affects even the strong. Bread & Butter’s return to Berlin on January 28th was celebrated with a fabulous event at the new premises, none other than the Tempelhof airport which ceased operating only a few months ago.

The main motto of the evening? The Future! And the future is definitely there!

Με αφορμή την κυκλοφορία του δεύτερου άλμπουμ του “So This is Heaven” και λίγο πριν ξεκινήσει τις live εμφανίσεις του, μιλήσαμε με τον Σεραφείμ Τσοτσώνη για τους νέους μουσικούς του πειραματισμούς. // His first solo work met with critical acclaim in Greece as well as abroad; Ozon caught up with Serafim Tsotsonis on the back of the release of his second album “So This is Heaven”, just before he goes on tour and we talked with him about his latest musical experimentations.

Το πρώτο σου άλμπουμ, “Peak” σημείωσε ιδιαίτερη επιτυχία. Σε άγχωσε αυτό ως προς τις προσδοκίες που δημιουργήθηκαν σχετικά με το επόμενο βήμα σου; Το πρώτο άλμπουμ είχε την αγωνία του αν θα αρέσει σε ένα κοινό ευρύτερο από εκείνο που είχε ακούσει δουλειά μου μέχρι εκείνη τη στιγμή. Το δεύτερο άλμπουμ είχε πραγματικά την αγωνία μιας μεγαλύτερης αποδοχής, μια που για την πρώτη μου δισκογραφική δουλειά εισέπραξα πολύ καλά σχόλια. Ήθελα να έχει μια εξέλιξη, ένα παραπάνω βήμα. Έτσι σ’ αυτό το νέο άλμπουμ προσπάθησα να πειραματιστώ με συνδυασμούς άλλων ακουσμάτων από εκείνους του “Peak” και παράλληλα να προκύψει ένα αποτέλεσμα που να ικανοποιεί τόσο εμένα ως δημιουργό όσο και τον ακροατή. Πώς θα περιέγραφες το ύφος του “So this is heaven”; Τι πιστεύεις ότι το διαχωρίζει από την προηγούμενη δουλειά σου; To “So This Is Heaven” κινείται περισσότερο σε ύφος electronica-pop-avant garde σε σχέση με το “Peak”, όπου κυριαρχούσαν new wave και ambient ηχοτόπια. Ως προς τη δομή και τη φόρμα του δεν κράτησα τη minimal προσέγγιση του “Peak”, γιατί ήθελα να υπάρχει μια πολυμορφία στη σύνθεση, οι φωνές να λειτουργήσουν σα μουσικά όργανα και τα φυσικά όργανα να ακουστούν “πειραγμένα”. Πώς έγινε η μετάβαση από τις σπουδές σε πιάνο και ανώτερα θεωρητικά στην ηλεκτρονική μουσική; Πόσο έντονα θεωρείς ότι είναι τα στοιχεία της κλασικής σου παιδείας στις μετέπειτα δουλειές σου; Δεν υπήρχε ποτέ η μία διαδικασία ανεξάρτητα από την άλλη, πάντα παράλληλα με τις σπουδές στο κλασσικό πιάνο έγραφα και ηλεκτρονική μουσική (ambient και experimental). Πιστεύω πως η κλασική παιδεία έχει παίξει πολύ σημαντικό ρόλο στο ύφος της δουλειάς μου και την εξέλιξή της. Ποιες είναι οι επιρροές σου; Υπάρχουν καλλιτέχνες ή ακούσματα που σε καθόρισαν μουσικά; Καλλιτέχνες και συγκροτήματα όπως οι Gustav Mahler, Arvo Pärt, Brian Eno, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Joy Division, Queen, και Smashing Pumpkins πιστεύω πως με έχουν επηρεάσει σε έναν πολύ μεγάλο βαθμό αλλά επίσης και πολλοί καλλιτέχνες της post- rock και new jazz σκηνής.

σχέση με τις δικές σου παραγωγές; Όλα όσα ανέφερες αποτελούν σημαντικές εμπειρίες γιατί ζητούσαν ξεχωριστές προσεγγίσεις λόγω του ότι είχαν διαφορετική θεματολογία, διαφορετικό τρόπο επικοινωνίας καθώς όλα αυτά απευθύνονται σε ένα διαφορετικό κοινό. Στις συνεργασίες όλων των παραπάνω, υπάρχει μία πρώτη καθοδήγηση από την μεριά του σκηνοθέτη, που αποτελεί και τον συντονιστή όλης της δουλειάς, οπότε το ποσοστό συμβολής του καθενός επιμερίζεται. Στα προσωπικά project ρυθμιστής γίνεται ο δημιουργός, καθώς χρειάζεται να επιμεληθεί τον ήχο, τη σύνθεση, την παραγωγή, επηρεαζόμενος πάντα βέβαια και από τους ανθρώπους με τους οποίους συνεργάζεται. Επίσης έχεις συνθέσει κομμάτια για έργα video art. Ποια είναι η σχέση σου με τα εικαστικά; Έχοντας πατέρα αγιογράφο, η ζωγραφική, τα χρώματα και οι συνθέσεις κυριαρχούσαν στα παιδικά μου χρόνια. Αργότερα η αδελφή μου ασχολήθηκε με τη ζωγραφική και το video art, οπότε η πρόκληση να ντύσω με ήχο την εικόνα ήταν πολύ μεγάλη. Εκτός από μία συνεχώς εξελισσόμενη πορεία στη μουσική, είσαι πατέρας δύο παιδιών. Πόσο εύκολο ή δύσκολο είναι να συνδυαστεί μία καριέρα που απαιτεί ταξίδια και περιοδείες με την οικογένεια; Δημιουργείς άλλη άποψη για τη ζωή αποκτώντας παιδιά. Επηρεάζεσαι στον τρόπο σκέψης, στη συμπεριφορά και στην έμπνευση. Όλα συνεχίζουν κανονικά, απλά οι σκέψεις για τους ανθρώπους της οικογένειάς σου σε ακολουθούν παντού. Ποια θεωρείς τη σημαντικότερη στιγμή στη μέχρι τώρα πορεία σου; Αναμφισβήτητα είναι η κυκλοφορία του πρώτου μου άλμπουμ, που αποτελούσε και το πρώτο μου μεγάλο άνοιγμα σε σαφώς μεγαλύτερο κοινό με περισσότερες απαιτήσεις, αλλά και με εντονότερες στιγμές ηθικής ικανοποίησης.

Τι περιλαμβάνουν τα μελλοντικά σου σχέδια; Στα άμεσα σχέδια υπάρχουν live εμφανίσεις στις οποίες θα παρουσιαστεί το “So this is heaven”, παράλληλα με την ηχογράφηση ενός νέου project σε συνεργασία με τον Γιώργο Κυριάκου και την Έλενα Χαρμπίλα των Kid Moxie.

You’ve composed music for film, documentaries and theatre plays; how did you find these experiences and how different does your approach need to be in comparison to your own productions?

They were all great experiences in terms of the different approach required due to the theme, the medium and the audience. Initially the director sets out some guidelines he wants to work within and therefore contribution is divided between more parties.

In personal projects you get to make the decisions yourself and therefore have sole responsibility for the sound, the synthesis and the production, while being constantly influenced by the people you work with.

You’ve composed tracks for video art projects; what is your relation to visual arts?

Ο Σωκράτης Σωκράτους ξέκλεψε λίγο χρόνο από την εντατική προετοιμασία για την εκπροσώπηση της Κύπρου στην 53η Μπιενάλε της Βενετίας για να μας πει τι θα παρουσιάσει εκεί. // Sokratis Sokratous’ involvement in art is widespread and can be surprising at times; OZON caught up with him as he took some time off from preparing to represent Cyprus in the 53rd Venice Biennale and he talked to us about what he’ll be showcasing there.

Θα εκπροσωπήσεις την Κύπρο στη Μπιενάλε της Βενετίας. Πώς νιώθεις γι’ αυτό και τί σε ώθησε να μπεις σε αυτή τη διαδικασία; Ήταν η πρώτη φορά που άφησα βιογραφικό στο Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού της Κύπρου, γιατί έμαθα ότι επιμελήτρια θα είναι η Sophie Duplaix, η διευθύντρια του τμήματος σύγχρονης τέχνης στο Εθνικό Μουσείο Μοντέρνας Τέχνης της Γαλλίας (Pompidou) και ήθελα να δει τη δουλειά μου. Όταν με επέλεξαν ως τον καλλιτέχνη που θα αντιπροσωπεύσει την Κύπρο στην 53η Μπιενάλε Βενετίας, χοροπήδησα από χαρά! Βέβαια αγχώθηκα πολύ από το βάρος της ευθύνης αλλά το ξεπέρασα, κυρίως μετά την πρώτη συνάντηση με τη Sophie. Είναι ένας καταπληκτικός άνθρωπος και υπάρχει εξαιρετική συνεννόηση. Μπορείς να μας μιλήσεις λίγο για το έργο που θα παρουσιάσεις; Το έργο βασίζεται σε ένα σύγχρονο μύθο, που μπορεί όμως να είναι και πραγματικότητα. Όταν άνοιξαν τα σύνορα στην Κύπρο ξεκίνησε μία τουριστική ανοικοδόμηση στην τουρκοκυπριακή μεριά, στα πλαίσια της οποίας φέρανε χιλιάδες φοίνικες από την Αίγυπτο για να κάνουνε το μέρος να δείχνει πιο εξωτικό. Άρχισε τότε να κυκλοφορεί η είδηση ότι στις ρίζες αυτών των δέντρων υπήρχαν αυγά κόμπρας, τα οποία έχουν ήδη εκκολαφθεί. Αυτή η ιστορία μου τράβηξε το ενδιαφέρον και ξεκίνησα να τη δουλεύω για μία έκθεση που έγινε πέρυσι στο Παρίσι. Στα πλαίσια της έρευνας βρήκα το ποίημα που έγραψε ο Σεφέρης το ‘69 και αναφέρεται στη περίπτωση της ξηρασίας στην Κύπρο, όπου δεν υπήρχε νερό για σαράντα χρόνια και το νησί γέμισε με φίδια, μία ιστορία που χρησιμοποίησε για να μιλήσει για το πολιτικό πρόβλημα της Κύπρου από την αρχαιότητα μέχρι σήμερα. Για το έργο της Μπιενάλε λοιπόν, συνέδεσα τα φίδια του ποιήματος με τις κόμπρες που εκκολάπτονται αυτή τη στιγμή στο νησί και κάνω μία καταγραφή της περιοχής με τους φοίνικες, ενώ παράλληλα ετοιμάζω ένα βίντεο με αληθινές κόμπρες. Στη Βενετία, τις μέρες που προηγούνται των εγκαινίων, ένα καράβι θα περιφέρεται στα κανάλια μεταφέροντας ένα φοίνικα, ενώ παράλληλα θα γίνονται και κάποια άλλα δρώμενα. Μετά τα εγκαίνια το έργο θα ολοκληρωθεί, με την παρουσίαση της καταγραφής των γεγονότων των προηγούμενων ημερών στο χώρο του περιπτέρου, μαζί με κάποιες εγκαταστάσεις. Το έργο έχει στοιχεία από την ιστορία της Κύπρου. Είναι παράλληλα και μία αναζήτηση ταυτότητας για σένα; Κοίτα, από τη στιγμή που εκπροσωπώ την Κύπρο θεωρώ ότι είναι σωστό να μιλήσω για αυτό το υπάρχον θέμα. Μπορεί να μην έχω ξεκάθαρες πολιτι-

particular issue. I don’t use clear political references in my work, I’m not interested in that, but nonetheless I view myself as a politically conscious artist.

Cyprus is such an intense place, with two nations who cannot yet co-exist and are behind borders; you can’t ignore that.

You are involved in a variety of projects, how differently do you approach each one?

Many people in the art world are skeptical of me involving myself with different things; I see it as part of my artistic creation. Running a column for eight years in various magazines was a way for me to intervene about things happening in the city I’m living in, it was a way of communicating. As a set and costume designer I got to work with many important people but I never got into a type of theatre that didn’t represent me. As far as the Hermès shopping window is concerned, I had no second thoughts, it was for a company of the highest caliber and what I did for them was no different to what I would show in a gallery.

I was wondering whether the reason you’ve been expressing yourself through different means has anything to do with a need for constant change; or is it possibly out of fear of becoming repetitive?

This is an important question, actually; I became known in this country from the first exhibition I took part in, which was a little bit scary. When I would sell a lot I would get depressed, because I thought that this meant I had reached my limits. So the answer to your question is that, yes, I do fear becoming repetitive. I know cases of older artists who canceled out their previous work this way. The artists themselves need more in control; I think I am experienced enough to make sure I keep a low profile and not to repeat myself for commercial purposes.

What’s your view regarding contemporary art in Greece? Are there artists that stand out for you?

I like some works from younger artists, like for instance Dionisis Kavalieratos’ exhibition at Breeder. I’m not sure what the term “Greek Art” means, but I know that many artists who live here are as good as other artists abroad. An artist’s reputation isn’t necessarily made from him / her becoming the top name in the world, it begins in smaller social networks. Basically, anything that can touch even five people is important. It would be great if you could influence, say, a million people; art isn’t for everyone though and actually I like it being relevant only to those who really care.

Ποιο ήταν το αγαπημένο σου jean στην εφηβεία σου και ποια διαφήμιση θυμάσαι ακόμα πιο έντονα; Το Culter της Diesel ήταν το πιο λατρεμένο - το είχα σε οχτώ διαφορετικά ξεβάμματα. Από τις διαφημίσεις θυμάμαι πολύ έντονα εκείνη με το Global Warming που εκφράζει για άλλη μια φορά την ευαισθητοποίηση της DIESEL για τον πλανήτη μας, πάντα βέβαια με την ανάλογη δόση ειρωνείας που μας χαρακτηρίζει. Τί σε έκανε να ενταχθείς στην “οικογένεια” της Diesel; Η Diesel έχει μια φιλοσοφία που από μικρό με γοήτευε και με μαγνήτιζε. Με έκανε να αισθάνομαι ιδιαίτερος όταν αγόραζα ένα τζιν. Το πιο σημαντικό βέβαια είναι ότι το Ελληνικό και διεθνές team είναι πολύ “δεμένο” και δεν είμαστε απλά συνεργάτες αλλά και φίλοι. Ποια ήταν η πρώτη σου δουλειά στην εταιρία και τι ακριβώς κάνεις σήμερα; Πριν από έντεκα χρόνια πήγα σε ένα interview στη Θεσσαλονίκη για το τμήμα πωλήσεων της χονδρικής και έτσι ξεκίνησα. Σήμερα η δουλειά μου είναι Presence Marketing & p.r.manager, έχω με άλλα λόγια την επιμέλεια της επικοινωνίας της εταιρίας. Τι σου αρέσει περισσότερο στη δουλειά σου; Ότι όταν με ρωτάνε “τι δουλειά κάνεις” και τους απαντώ, όλοι μου λένε πόσο λατρεύουν τη Diesel. Αυτό δε που με κάνει πιο χαρούμενο και περήφανο είναι η αγάπη και η αποδοχή που έχει το brand από όλους. Σε ενοχλεί που κάποιοι φίλοι σου μπορεί να προτιμούν άλλα denim brands; Δεν μπορώ να απαντήσω σε αυτό γιατί δεν μου ‘χει τύχει. Αλλά αν συμβεί σίγουρα θα τους πείσω για την ανωτερότητα του δικού μας brand, άλλωστε αυτή είναι η αλήθεια. Τα πάρτυ της Diesel και ιδιαίτερα το τελευταίο με τίτλο XXX, είναι αναμφίβολα πετυχημένα. Ποια είναι η συνταγή τους; Το μυστικό για την επιτυχία των πάρτυ ήταν, είναι και θα είναι η φιλοσοφία της Diesel, όμως για το XXX DIESEL Party πιο συγκεκριμένα, ήταν το πάθος και η ενέργεια που μοιράζεται ο κόσμος του Diesel Planet και που μπόρεσε να ενώσει όλο τον κόσμο (18 πρωτεύουσες παγκοσμίως, παρ’ όλη τη διαφορά ώρας). --What were your favorite jeans when you were a teenager and which advert do you remember the most from that time?

Diesel’s Culter was my favorite make; I had eight pairs in eight different washes. I’ll always remember Diesel’s Global Warming ad, with Diesel showing their awareness when it comes to environmental issues, with the necessary touch of irony that characterizes the brand.

What made you become part of Diesel?

Diesel have always had a certain philosophy that I was drawn to; It made me feel special when buying a pair of jeans. The most important aspect however, is how tightly knit the International and the Greek teams are; we are more like friends than just co-workers.

What was your job when you first started working for the company and what do you do today?

Eleven years ago I went for an interview for the position of a wholesale

salesman in Thessaloniki. Today I am head of Presence Marketing & the P.R. manager, in other words I am responsible for the company’s communications.

What do you like the most about your job?

That when people ask me what I do and I answer, they all tell me how much they love Diesel. What makes me happy is the love and appreciation people express for the brand.

Would it bother you if some of your friends preferred other denim brands?

I can’t really answer that, because it’s never happened to me. But if it did happen, I’m sure I could convince them of the superiority of our brand; it’s only the truth.

What’s the secret behind Diesel’s successful parties and XXX in particular?

The secret behind the success is, was and always will be Diesel’s philosophy.

As for the XXX DIESEL Party, it was Diesel Planet’s energy and passion that brought together the whole world (18 cities around the world despite the time difference).

When will you do the next one?

You will be the first ones to find out through the pages of Ozon.

What do you like the most about Diesel’s and 55DSL’s latest lines?

What stands out in your view?

I prefer Diesel’s jeans, each pair has parts that are hand made and for that reason they are unique! 55Dsl is a super cool streetwear label which we also love; my favorite however has to be Diesel Black Gold, our new collection to be shown in the New York fashion week.

You travel a lot, which is your favorite city? Who or what has left a strong impression on you recently?

My work gives me the opportunity to visit many different places; my favorite destination has to be New York, but many European cities too. The Diesel planet store in Milan has left a lasting impression on me, where you get the chance to experience the Diesel culture in an amazing 2000 square metre space. We are also looking forward to the new Diesel store on 5th Avenue in New York.

What’s your aim?

My aim is to develop and become better in every way; to support and communicate the brand and the values it represents and give the chance to others to become passionate about Diesel.

Το 2009 μας επιφυλάσσει μια πολύ ευχάριστη επιστροφή, άσχετα αν πολλοί από εμάς δεν θα τα δοκιμάσουμε (εκτός αν είμαστε αρκετά τολμηροί). Για τα fly girls όμως η επιστροφή της L.A. Gear δεν πρέπει να περάσει απαρατήρητη. Τα θυμάμαι στο Γυμνάσιο όταν αρκετοί κυκλοφορούσαν με αυτά (ενώ εμείς τσακιζόμασταν στο μπάσκετ με Air Jordan, ΑF1, Reebok και Adidas) και πάντα μας έκαναν κάπως με όλα αυτά τα χρώματα και τις συνεργασίες με Michael Jackson, Belinda Carlile και Paula Abdul (χωρίς να ξεχνάμε και τα πολύ καλά basketball μοντέλα στα οποία ποτέ δεν είπαμε όχι). Χάρη σε δύο υπέροχες Ολλανδέζες, την Kristel και την Josine του μικρού δημιουργικού γραφείου Club Zonder Filter στο Άμστερνταμ αλλά και του καλιφορνέζικου καταστήματος Sportie LA, κατάφεραν με πολύ κόπο και ιδρώτα να πείσουν τη μαμά L.A. Gear στη Venice Beach να επιστρέψει με νέα retro Fireball και Fire High μοντέλα! Και αφού δύο μικρές άγνωστες Ολλανδέζες μπορούν να καταφέρουν κάτι τέτοιο, ο κόσμος φαντάζει πιο όμορφος και ελπιδοφόρος ακόμα και μέσα από πράγματα σαν αυτά. Welcome back!

2009 has just arrived and there’s already a surprise comeback, one which many will welcome but not everyone will try (apart from the more daring); the return of L.A. Gear is set to catch the eye of all fly girls around the world. I remember people wearing them at school (while we were manically playing basketball in our Air Jordans, ΑF1s, Reeboks and Adidas) but L.A. Gear with their Michael Jackson, Belinda Carlisle and Paula Abdul endorsements weren’t really the sneaker of choice for my gang (the basketball models aside). Now Kristel and Josine from Club Zonder Filter in Amsterdam and California’s Sportie LA have joined forces in convincing Venice Beach’s L.A. Gear to finally make a comeback with a new range of retro Fireball and Fire High models! If two young, unknown Dutch girls can make that happen, well then there’s hope in the world. Welcome back!

Την ώρα που διαβάζετε αυτές τις γραμμές ήδη κυκλοφορούν τα Air Jordan 2009 στην Αμερική (και η δεύτερη φουρνιά στα μέσα του Φεβρουαρίου ακριβώς τις μέρες του NBA All-Star Weekend), αφού παρουσιάστηκαν επίσημα από τον Michael 44 ozonlook

Ήταν ένα από τα πιο ενδιαφέροντα πράγματα που είδαμε στην πρόσφατη εμπορική έκθεση μόδας Bread & Butter στη Βαρκελώνη. Η έκθεση denim φούστας των πρωτοετών φοιτητών της Βασιλικής Ακαδημίας Καλών Τεχνών της Αμβέρσας τα είχε όλα: έμπνευση, στυλ, καινοτομία! // It was probably one of the most interesting things we saw in the last edition of Bread & Butter fashion tradeshow in Barcelona. The denim skirt exhibition of the first year students of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp had it all; inspiration, style, innovation!

Κάθε πρωτοετής στη Βασιλική Ακαδημία Καλών Τεχνών της Αμβέρσας ξεκινάει τη φοίτησή του με τη σπουδή μίας φούστας - αυτό αποτελεί το πρώτο τους σχέδιο στη σχολή. Για πολλά χρόνια οι φοιτητές μόδας δούλευαν αυτό το κομμάτι με κάμποτο από λευκό βαμβάκι. Φέτος, για πρώτη φορά, οι φούστες είναι κατασκευασμένες από denim. Οι λέξεις - κλειδιά της διαδικασίας παρέμειναν οι ίδιες: δημιουργία, 3D, ένταση, δύναμη, γραμμή, κίνηση, σιλουέτα, σώμα, ισορροπία, ποικιλία, προσωπικότητα, καινοτομία. Οι φοιτητές ενθαρρύνθηκαν να κάνουν χαρακτηριστικές επιλογές σχετικά με το ύφος και το στυλ της φούστας. Θα ‘πρεπε να είναι παιχνιδιάρικη, εύθραυστη, ποιητική, ελκυστική, λαμπερή ή ακραία. Το οριστικό και ολολκηρωμένο σχέδιο έπρεπε να αντικατοπτρίζει την προσωπική άποψη του κάθε φοιτητή για τη μόδα. Το τελικό αποτέλεσμα που παρουσιάστηκε στην είσοδο του Sports & Street τομέα στη Βαρκελώνη ήταν ένα πληθωρικό και πολυποίκιλο μίγμα από δημιουργίες πρωτοετών φοιτητών. Απολαύστε το!

Every first year student of the Royal Academy of fine Arts in Antwerp has to start with the study of a skirt – their first piece of design at the school.

For a number of years now fashion students worked for this piece with calico, off white cotton. This year, for the first time, skirts are made of denim. Keywords towards the design process stayed the same: Creative, 3d, Vigorous, Volume, Line, Movement, Silhouette, Body, Balance, Diverse, Personal, Innovative.

Students were encouraged to make distinctive choices about the feel and / or style of their skirt. It should be playful, fragile, poetic, elegant, glamorous or edgy. The final design had to express each student’s personal take on fashion.

An exuberant mix of creations by 1st year Bachelor students is the final result that was presented in Barcelona, at the entrance of the Sports & Street area. Enjoy!

The band from San Francisco has taken its name from two characters from Wes Anderson’s “The Royal Tenenbaums”, (Uzi and Ari were Ben Stiller’s kids in the film).

Their music, which is based on electronic sounds combined with acoustic instruments such as piano, accordion and wind instruments, is reminiscent of Mum and Sigur Ros, while the vocals make obvious reference to Radiohead and Thom Yorke. Unusual orchestrations of electronic-pop music make up an album of beautiful songs.

Mary and the Boy / Time Machine (Inner Ear Records) Η συναισθηματική φόρτιση που προκαλεί η μουσική των Mary and the Boy είναι ίσως μια από τις χαρακτηριστικότερες αρετές τους. Σε σχέση με το περσινό ομώνυμο άλμπουμ, το “Τime Machine” είναι πιο ρυθμικό, πιο ποπ, πιο new wave, χωρίς να λείπει το αναμενόμενο σκοτεινό ύφος τους, ενώ την παραγωγή έχει επιμεληθεί ο Felizol. Το αδιαμφισβήτητο ταλέντο του Bοy και η φωνή της Mary κάνουν αυτό το σχήμα ένα από τα ενδιαφέροντα εγχώρια ακούσματα. Το “Merriweather Post Pavilion” είναι το ένατο άλμπουμ τους και αποτελεί ένα μακρύ, περίεργο ταξίδι στο οποίο συνδυάζονται οι αρμονίες της ποπ των Beach Boys με αφρικάνικους και ηλεκτρονικούς ρυθμούς. Ωστόσο, οι ευφάνταστες μελωδίες τους παράγουν ένα σύγχρονο ήχο.

--New Yorkers Animal Collective ceaselessly continue producing music associated with psychedelia, noise, freak folk and indie rock. “Merriweather Post Pavilion” is the band’s ninth album and is a long, strange trip that combines the harmonies of the Beach Boys pop with African rhythms and electronics; imaginative melodies that produce a modern sound.

Glasvegas (Sony Bmg) Τη χρονιά που πέρασε, η μπάντα από τη Σκωτία γνώρισε μεγάλη επιτυχία κερδίζοντας την αγάπη του κοινού και των κριτικών. Οι Glasvegas έφτιαξαν όνομα ως μια βρετανική μπάντα με δυναμική σκηνική παρουσία, ενώ η μουσική τους συνεχίζει τη μουσική παράδοση άλλων συμπατριωτών τους. Επηρεασμένοι από το rockabilly της δεκαετίας του ‘50 και ‘60, ακούγονται σαν τους Jesus & Mary Chain αν αυτοί έπαιζαν στο soundtrack του “Grease”.

--Over the past year this Scottish band has experienced great success, winning the affection of the public and critics alike. Η ταινία τρόμου της χρονιάς έρχεται από τη Σουηδία και επιμένει πως το κακό μπορεί τελικά να είναι ο καλύτερος φίλος του ανθρώπου! // The horror film of the year comes from Sweden and is resolute that evil may ultimately be a man’s best friend! Η ταινία του Σουηδού Τόμας Άλφρεντσον “ Άσε Το Κακό Να Μπει” (“Let The Right One In”) δεν είναι μια τυπική ταινία τρόμου με βαμπίρ. Είναι – στην κυριολεξία - ό,τι δεν θα μπορούσε να είναι ποτέ μια τυπική ταινία τρόμου με βαμπίρ. Το πραγματικό της θέμα είναι η μοναξιά. Η μοναξιά του μικρού Όσκαρ που προσπαθεί να ανακαλύψει πού ακριβώς μπορεί να κρύβεται η ευτυχία την ίδια στιγμή που οι χωρισμένοι γονείς του και οι συμμαθητές του στο σχολείο κάνουν τα πάντα για να τον απομονώσουν και να τον στείλουν μόνο στην παγωμένη νύχτα της Σουηδίας. Εκεί θα γνωρίσει την Έλι, ένα κορίτσι που μυρίζει περίεργα, μοιάζει με φάντασμα και έχει την ίδια ηλικία με τον Όσκαρ. Μόνο που βρίσκεται σε αυτήν την ηλικία εδώ και εκατοντάδες χρόνια. Ένα μοναχικό βαμπίρ που δεν μπορεί να μπει στη ζωή σου παρά μόνο αν το καλέσεις.

Ο Όσκαρ θα τολμήσει, θα “αφήσει το κακό να μπει” και η ιστορία αγάπης που θα ξεκινήσει ανάμεσα στα δύο 12χρονα θα αρχίσει να παίρνει διαστάσεις μύθου, θρύλου ή ακόμη και τρόμου. Εξαλείφοντας κάθε κλισέ μιας ιστορίας με βαμπίρ και αφήνοντας το αίμα να κυλήσει με μοναδικό σκοπό να τρυπήσει το παγωμένο από το χιόνι τοπίο, ο Άλφρεντσον παραδίδει με το συναισθηματισμό ενός πληγωμένου παιδιού και με το σαδισμό μιας ανήλικης επανάστασης μια ταινία φτιαγμένη από τα υλικά που είναι φτιαγμένες όλες εκείνες οι ταινίες που ξεκινούν από κάτι πολύ προσωπικό για να αγγίξουν σχεδόν το κοσμικό, αντιστρέφοντας οριστικά και αμετάκλητα με τον πιο αφοπλιστικό τρόπο τις όποιες προκατα-

--The film from Sweden’s Tomas Alfredson, "Let The Right One In" is not a typical vampire movie. It is - literally – what a typical horror movie with vampires could never be.

The real theme is solitude; Oscar’s loneliness on his mission to find happiness, while his separated parents and peers at school do their best to increase his isolation, sending him alone into the cold Swedish night. There he meets Ellie, a girl who smells strange, has a ghostly appearance and is the same age as Oscar. Only, as we discover, she has remained at this age for hundreds of years; a lonely vampire who can only get into your life if invited.

Oscar dares to "let the right one in” and the love story that then evolves between the two 12 year olds begins to take on dimensions of a myth, a legend and even terror.

Avoiding any vampire movie clichés, Tomas Alfredson lets the story unveil, with a childish sentimentalism and the type of sadism that underpins an under-aged rebellion. Starting out as a very personal

type of movie it develops into something almost cosmic, irrevocably reversing preconceptions in the most disarming manner, prejudices that seem to live for years in people's minds regarding a vampire, from the innocent kisses on the neck and the eternal battle of good with evil.

Τα έσοδα των πωλήσεων θα διατεθούν στο Κέντρο Υποδοχής Αστέγων του Δήμου Αθηναίων, ενώ η “έκπληξη” του τίτλου έγκειται στην αποκάλυψη της ταυτότητας του δημιουργού κάθε έργου μόνο μετά την αγορά του. --artAZ is an online space dedicated to promoting Greek art and as of the 7th of February they will embark on an original charity event entitled ‘Ekplixi’ (Surprise), showcasing 200 original artworks on their website. The works will then go on sale for €50 per piece during the event, which will take place on the 14th and 15th of February in Technopolis, in Athens. All earnings will go to the Athens Municipal Centre for the homeless, with the surprise element being that the artist’s name for each work will only be revealed after purchase. Τ: 210 8837430.
