OZ KINK FEST: ORIGIN STORY

LOOKING BACK WITH OZ KINK FOUNDER MZ MALLICE Can you share with us how the journey began, what inspired the inception of the Oz Kink Fest back in 2006 during the Melbourne Leather Pride Festival?

These two pillars synergistically fuel the array of workshops and skillshares conducted during the festival, opening avenues to host international experts with eclectic knowledge.

The inception of Oz Kink Fest traces back to a series of synergistic events and collaborations, all converging in 2006 during the Melbourne Leather Pride Festival. The journey started around 2002 when I was at the helm of publishing Kink-E Magazine. By 2004, I had embarked on running my first Hellfire Resurrection.

This educational dimension is a core value of ours, recognising the imperative role of learning in enriching the community’s tapestry. We deeply understand and embrace our responsibility in fostering education and knowledge dissemination within the community.

It was during this time I was approached by the publisher of Melbourne Kink Scene with an opportunity to collaborate. They proposed bringing Satomi & Lukas Zpira for workshops, and it seemed fitting to align their tour with a Hellfire performance.

This collaboration planted the seeds for what would eventually blossom into Oz Kink Fest.

The real momentum, however, started in 2006 when the producer of Melbourne Leather Pride invited me to contribute an event to the festival—one that was inclusive, pansexual, or cantered around women. He already had secured a venue at the Fitzroy Town Hall and needed an event to fill it. Given my extensive experience working at Sexpo, conceptualising an equivalent in the kink realm seemed like a natural progression.

It was this pivotal decision that served as the catalyst, bringing all the fragments together and giving birth to Oz Kink Fest, with the debut of the Fetish Expo in 2006.

It was a convergence of passion, experience, and opportunity, marking the beginning of a transformative journey in celebrating and exploring the diverse tapestry of kink.

How has the Oz Kink Fest evolved over the years in terms of its scope, scale, and diversity?

The metamorphosis of Oz Kink Fest over the years is anchored in the evolution of its four foundational pillars, each embodying a unique facet of the festival’s essence.

The first key pillar, Hellfire Resurrection, initially concentrated on forging opportunities for performers and introducing international talent to the Australian audience, serving as a gateway to the global stage.

Fetish Expo emerged as the confluence of the diverse elements within the alternative community, uniting makers, retailers, artisans, fashion labels, models, performers, and the community at large. It has been crucial to spotlight retailers like Lucrezia DeSade and Eagle Leather throughout the festival and expo as they are the heartbeat of the scene, knitting the various strands of our community together.

Lastly, Klub Kunst is the cherry on top, offering a more subterranean sanctuary for the seasoned players, adding a dash of clandestine thrill to the festival’s repertoire.

The evolution of Oz Kink Fest is a tale of expansion, diversification, and enrichment, each pillar intertwining with the others, enhancing the scale, scope, and diversity, and elevating the festival to new heights of experience and understanding.

What have been some of the most memorable moments and milestones in the history of the Oz Kink Fest?

This is a deeply personal question for me after 16 years there are so many but if I had to pick a few here are my top 5 in chronological order:

1.

Hellfire Resurrection 2006 Billboard Nightclub – Lukas & Satomi hook suspension out the back in the dressing room I checked in to see how they were going.

Satomi was trying to get the hooks in Lukas back, but it was so scarred she was struggling.

Lukas said “Hey kitten” (He called me kitten) “get a hammer!” so I did, and used it.

Hellfire Resurrection 2006 Billboard Nightclub – Midori & Satomi coming together as the two most prominent Shibari artists in the world at that time for an absolutely stunning performance.

Hellfire Resurrection 2011 Royal Hotel – The Hanged Man Team hook suspension was breath taking, intense, and pushed the boundaries to next level.

Fetish Expo Fashion show 2019 – Matt Bylett Designs elevated the festival to a new level. I remember thinking “yeah this is world class fetish & latex fashion at its best”.

Hellfire Resurrection 2022 – The Carnie arrived at my house form the US and was a calm, kind and unassuming human. So creative, gentle and spiritual. Who knew that when he performed at Hellfire he would blow our minds with an incredible multi hooks suspension of the divine Artimus Stagg.

How do you ensure that the event stays true to its roots while embracing new trends, ideas, and communities within the kink world?

Maintaining the integrity and essence of Oz Kink Fest while integrating new trends, ideas, and communities from the kink world is a delicate balance. The festival’s longevity and success can be attributed to an effective formula that, while solid at its core, is flexible enough to allow for annual enhancements and refinements.

We constantly navigate through various challenges, continually pushing our limits to ensure that each event is a realisation of our vision. There are always moments of anticipation, questioning whether our creations will resonate, wondering if our endeavours remain relevant.

However, the uniqueness and the value we bring to the community underscore the relevance and the need for what we do.

Feedback from our attendees and participants often reaffirms the distinctiveness and the impact of Oz Kink Fest. For instance, one of our esteemed international presenters from 2022, who has had the privilege to be part of numerous global events and festivals, shared their observations with us.

They felt that Oz Kink Fest stands out among the myriad of kink events across the world, offering experiences and insights that are unparalleled, and setting a benchmark in terms of content, community engagement, and diversity.

Our commitment is to preserve the foundational spirit of Oz Kink Fest while fostering an environment that is inclusive, innovative, and reflective of the evolving landscape of the kink world. It’s not about surpassing others; it’s about enriching our community and providing unique, meaningful experiences that celebrate the diversity and the depth of kink.

How have the local artisans, creators, and performers shaped and enriched the fest over the years?

Recognising our position within a broader, interconnected ecosystem, we’ve consistently endeavoured to work collaboratively, aspiring to cultivate a community that is supportive, continually evolving, enlightening, and inclusive.

Reflecting upon the trajectory of Oz Kink Fest, we see a tapestry woven with the endeavours of numerous performers and presenters who have carved notable paths for themselves.

Post-Covid, Australia has witnessed a fervent resurgence of community-building events in every state, symbolising the revival and strengthening of our vibrant and eclectic kink and fetish community. National Rubber and Leather Competitions are spearheading this rejuvenation, paving the way for more inclusive and diversified experiences. The enthusiasm and dedication radiating from committees like Melbourne Rubber are truly invigorating and foreshadow a promising future for our community.

However, the lifeblood of our journey and the community are our foundational retail supporters, Lucrezia DeSade/SAX Fetish and Eagle Leather. Their unwavering investment of time, resources, and support stems from a profound passion and a selfless desire to nurture the community. Their contributions are not mere transactions but are heart-felt gifts to the community.

Our existence and our growth are deeply intertwined with the relentless support and the passionate endeavours of numerous individuals and entities, each contributing to the flourishing and the fortification of the community’s essence. It’s a collective symphony, where every note, every beat, enriches the melody of our shared journey in the realm of kink and fetish.

Can you share your vision for the future of Oz Kink Fest?

How do you see it growing and evolving in the coming years?

Every conclusion of the festival leaves me in a blend of exhaustion and euphoria, contemplating whether it will be the last. However, the influx of photos and the outpouring of community responses remind me of the significance of our endeavours, rekindling the flame for another year.

My aspiration is for the persistent and unwavering support from the community, as it is the bedrock that sustains our spirit and fuels our journey.

Observing the kaleidoscope of individuals, each immersed in their unique experiences, is the driving force that propels us forward. It is a sight that transcends words, a tableau of diversity and unity, resonating with the harmonic hum of collective joy and exploration.

As we traverse into the future, our compass is set towards enriching the community with more educational opportunities, focusing on areas like the DM training program. The evolution of Oz Kink Fest will be a dance between preservation and innovation, holding on to the threads of our essence while embracing the winds of change, hoping to create a symphony of experiences that resonate with the diverse and evolving pulse of our community.

Your journey as a DJ has led you to perform at many gay male or mixed gender kink events. How did you find your niche in this unique space, and what drew you to it?

Being a DJ is all about connecting with the crowd. How do you build that bridge of understanding and trust, especially in events that can be so personal and intimate for many attendees?

The underground scene has been a big part of my life and DJ career. Kink events are fantastic to work at because people make such an effort to look their best and have a great time.

Every party has its own unique segment of our community and there’s a strong sense of openness and shared experience.

I think being flexible as you get to know a crowd and what works for them. Good not to have too many preconceptions on where it will go. People are there for dance floor expression and letting go but I also keep in mind they are there for more than the music.

And just as people are there to embrace diversity in kinks, genders and looks, they also embrace diversity in music. This makes my job as a DJ a real pleasure as I get to step outside the box.

From your perspective, how has the kink scene, and the music that accompanies it, evolved over the years? Are there any trends or shifts that you've found particularly exciting?

Given the specific nature and atmosphere of the kink events where you play, how do you curate your music to enhance the experience for attendees? Are there specific tracks or genres that resonate more with these events?

Kink and fetish is a much bigger scene than 15 years ago. It’s been embraced by a broad cross section of society. I think it’s awesome that within the scene you see a range of events catering to different mixes of gender and subculture, some more social, others more sexual. This diversity is a real strength.

It’s great that you also hear a range of music styles being played at these events.

I think people are looking for of a broader range of genres but for me the music at these events is more about grinding hips than hands in the air. So deep house, tech house, progressive, techno. I think you always have to keep in mind that the attendees are also here for artistic expression and coming together, often with sexual energy.

The music should complement this experience for the partygoers and sometimes has to step back to a little to allow for that.

Who have been your greatest musical influences and inspirations? Have they changed or evolved since you started DJing at gay and mixed gender kink events?

As you prepare to DJ at Hellfire Resurrection for Oz Kink Fest 2023, what can attendees expect from your set? And how does performing at an event like this differ from others you've been a part of?

Well I have a lot to learn about Oz Kink Fest and Hellfire and that’s always exciting. I was a regular at Hellfire Club in Sydney many many years ago when I was a baby gay. It was an eye opener for me and many others back then. I’m looking forward to being a part of this festival, seeing the shows, and hopefully doing the event justice with sexy tunes that provide the soundtrack to the celebration.

Oh gosh. Tony de Vit, Ian M, Frankie Knuckles, Carl Cox, Danny Tenaglia, Susan Morabito, Mandy Rollins, Stephen Allkins, Mel Fitzpatrick, Paul Goodyear, Kate Monroe, Gavin Campbell, Peter McNamara and so many other amazing DJs I’ve had the privilege of working with over the years. The music has gotten a bit harder. But the fetish and kink scene is as diverse as any other. There are just as many Kylie fans as techno fans in the scene, I always try and make sure the the music is sexy but accessible.

Do you have a fetish you want to explore? Are you wanting to kink up your sex life? Is there a curious desire you need satiated?

The best way to get into kink is on your own terms, but that can be hard when you’re still trying to work out what it is you want, or who you want it with. Of course, the internet is the general place to start – in fact I sometimes wonder how people even identified and communicated their kinks prior to 2000 – but how to you make the move from online kinkster to real life connections.

Social Media:

Munches: So your socials are activated, you’re chatting a bit, and you’re ready to meet a few people in a relatively chill environment. You need a Munch. (Okay. But what IS that?!) Munches are a meeting of kinksters in a mainstream setting – no gear, no BDSM dress-ups, no play. They are casual, public get-togethers – mostly for people to catch up and hang out with likeminded people. Some munches are organised by fetish or BDSM role – submissive much, leather munch, littles munch – but they’re more commonly listed by location, so finding one in your area shouldn’t be too hard. If it’s your first-time, get in touch with the organiser and let them know.

It’s nice for them to know a new face is heading along, so they can have some time put aside to get you welcomed and comfy. Now why not put the Oz Kink Fest munch in your calendar?

Workshops and Skillshares: Workshops and skillshares are terms often used interchangeably, the definition coming down to the event organiser and the term they prefer. Although workshops can tend to be more theory-focused, and skillshares more ‘hands on’, both are valuable learning opportunities for any kinkster, but particularly those new to the scene. Educating yourself is probably one of the best things you can do. When we learn about the things we love our confidence grows, and as our confidence expands so too does our ability to connect with others. Workshops and skillshares provide an opportunity to learn some valuable, tangible skills and develop your kink play, but they also a great chance to engage with other kinksters about their play.

Fetish Events: Or why not jump right in? Think of a nightclub, then imagine everyone decked out in their kinkiest finery – leather, latex, lingerie… cuffs, collars, crotchless clothes. And yes, there is dancing. There are certainly bodies moving. But are they dancing to the music, or the flogger?

Do they move to the beat in their ears, or the beating of their bum? There are fetish events running in every major city, and again, it’s your social media network that will point you in the right direction. There are also an array of events on offer – club nights, private(ish) parties, balls, and dungeon events – some of which offer sex on premises, but the majority is for kink play only. Be sure to check out the dress code for these events – some will accept basic black, but if you’re going to a latex party, there’s a good chance you’ll wanna wear latex.

NEW TO KINK? TRY THESE TIPS

There are a tonne of options for socials for fetish kink and BDSM. There are platforms like Fetlife specific to kinky people, and groups and pages within larger platforms like Facebook where kinky people can share info and chat. These groups are your best chance for discovering events that you’re comfortable attending. Being BDSM/fetish specific, Fetlife is almost a must for keeping up with events. Due to Facebook community standards, adult events of a sexy or kinky persuasion (even within private groups) can come under scrutiny, so it’s not super reliable for information, and horrendous for censorship. Twitter can be a good option too, as there is no requirement for a real name, and you can get access to a lot of NSFW content. Many kink educators and events have Twitter accounts and you can keep up with them with a simple follow.

INTERVIEW WITH PAULINE MORAN

Pauline, could you briefly describe your journey and how you became involved with AMM? My corporate background was event management so when Adult Match Maker was looking to build an event listing for members to give them the opportunity to meet like-minded members in a social setting, it was suggested I help out for 4-5 hours per week. That grew into a full time job and although I now have other responsibilities such as blog editor, events is still my main priority.

How did AMM's collaboration with Oz Kink Fest begin?

That’s a great question. We’ve been promoting Provocation and Oz Kink Fest back as early as 2010.

In fact the very first party which AMM sponsored was a kink event in Sydney. Back then a lot of my contacts came from word of mouth and from memory I probably approached Di and offered to list and promote her events to our members.

What are the key responsibilities in your role as the event manager for AMM looking after those event partnerships?

For parties we promote regularly it’s ensuring we target their promotion correctly and only promote to the like-minded members they’re looking for. There’s nothing worse than spam in your inbox or getting an invite to a party which isn’t for you. My role is also to assist them get the very best exposure on the site through the event listings, Noticeboard, site notifications and social media shoutouts. I’m also able to use my 10+ years experience to help new party organisers who often struggle to negotiate the “promotion” side of running a new event.

How has your understanding of the adult industry evolved over the years?

Well considering I didn’t attend my first kink event until I was actually working for AMM it was a steep learning curve lol. But I am in the unusual position that I am one of the few AMM employees who gets the opportunity to talk to Party Organisers and members face to face at events. This has been invaluable in getting a better understanding of what members are looking for and identifying potential improvements to functionality.

From your perspective, what are the key factors that make a dating website successful in the adult industry?

It’s being able to easily find playmates who are looking for the same things as you are and be confident you’re not chatting to a bot. Our key focus is a commitment to genuine profiles and we’ve introduced a range of safeguards to make that a reality. Also if you join a site you need profile options so that members can look at your profile and get a snapshot of your relationships, level of kink and sexual interests. And of course we need to be pro-active about the issues facing the industry such as consent and online abuse, and responsive to member’s feedback.

Over the past decade, how has the collaboration between AMM and Oz Kink Fest evolved and benefited both parties?

A partnership is obviously two-fold. I hope that through our featuring the events on AMM that more members have learnt about and attended Oz Kink Fest. And we see our benefit as providing our members with a way to meet like-minded members offsite and Di and the team are fantastic with the shoutouts they give to us. We want to continue to be a supportive partner for kink and alternative events.

Can you share one of your most memorable moments or experiences from the Oz Kink Fest events?

I think almost falling off the side of the stage during the Best Dressed competition at Hellfire Resurrection was memorable for all the wrong reasons. Thank you Holly from Fancy Piece for catching

me. But the wow moment was when Di pulled me aside before Satomi & Lukaz Zpira performed and suggested I sit on the floor close to the performance. It was the most incredible suspended bondage performance I have ever witnessed. It told a story, was technically perfect and will always remain in my memory as a performance which brought me to tears.

How have dating sites in the adult industry evolved over the past decade, and what are some emerging trends?

Unfortunately some of the emerging trends which affect adult dating have been negative. Like many other sites with adult content Mastercard and Visa demanded that we remove R rated content. Another issue is sex educators unable to share educational content on socials which affects us when we want to share articles from our Sex & Relationship blog.

We also spent considerable time developing a full app but then need to work within the constraints of both Apple and Google as to what they will allow the app to access. It’s disappointing to have external companies able to mandate what adults should have access to.

Consent has obviously become a hot topic and as well as at least 5 articles on our blog which talk about consent we’ve added features such as being able to report a member for sending unsolicited and unwanted adult content.

With ENM becoming increasingly popular I also worked with offsite polyam groups to develop a set of unique polyamory profile options for members who are looking to build relationships, and then show those relationships through Linked profiles.

As an adult dating site we need to continue to be agile in listening to members and improving our processes when required.

In your view, how has technology shaped or reshaped the adult dating landscape?

Having an app is now essential if you want to stay at the top of the rankings and we’ve had a great take up on our app through Google Play and Apple so that members can enable push notifications for instant messaging. Access to the site via mobile or the app vastly outweighs access via a laptop or desktop. It just a constantly evolving beast which our developers need to be aware of.

Online safety and privacy are paramount in the dating world, especially in the adult sector. How does AMM ensure a safe and secure platform for its users?

More and more Australians meet their partner/s through a dating app these days so it’s important to join one which is reputable and has dating safety options.

The key elements to ensure a safe platform for our users are profile verification and the ability for members to report unusual or inappropriate behaviour onsite. We were actually the first Australian site to introduce profile verification and since then we’ve added Validations and Report Member features. I joined another dating app and my profile verification came back approved within 30secs. To me that says they are using AI. So it’s fast, but all it’s doing is verifying there is a person in the photo. You could upload anything! All new registrations, verification and reports on Adult Match Maker are done by our Support Team as we want the members on the site to be genuine.

For privacy we offer members the choice of uploading photos to a Private Gallery where they have the

What do you love most about the adult industry, and what keeps you passionate about your work?

I like helping our Party Organisers. I am a sucker for a good stat and constantly check analytics to see what engagement the onsite promotion has achieved so I can continue to tweak it in the future.

And I love looking after our Sex & Relationship blog which also has a BDSM & Kink section with over 50 articles. We started off with a strong focus on someone beginning their kink journey and have a whole set of BDSM101 articles explaining the back to basics stuff but it’s great to chat to our writers (all Aussies and well respected in their respective fields of expertise) and come up with new ideas for future articles. A recent one which MisKnickers wrote about sub frenzy was very popular as was her articles on unleashing your inner fem dom.

Synchronizing Vision: A strong concept and willing to go beyond the predictable.

Encouraging them to represent models of all backgrounds as that defines the foundations of Oz Kink Fest and there audience.

"Working with different designers means aligning with multiple visions. How do you ensure that each designer's unique voice shines while maintaining a cohesive flow throughout the show?"

Behind-the-Scenes Challenges: Elevating and encouraging growth within their own vision.

"Directing a fashion show is no easy feat. Can you share one of the most challenging situations you've faced over the years and how you navigated it?"

The Art of Choreography: I encourage that designers work on their own Choreography as a rule as I don't won't to stand in the way of their creativity that reflects their designs.

If they would like a standard runway presentation without a performance it can still benefit a designer if they feel that they want the couture to speak for itself with a dramatic interpretation in movement.

The most complexed segments would have to be extra equipment like poles, logistically it's possible still and often has to go towards the end of the Fashion Show to co-ordinate logistics to make it streamline.

Thorough rehearsals are required to make it perfect.

"Choreographing a fetish fashion show requires a different sensibility than traditional runway shows. How do you approach choreography to enhance the designs while keeping the audience engaged?"

Musical Choices: I prefer that music resonates with what the Oz Kink Fest stands for.

Musically I prefer it to be creative and upbeat to engage our audience at all times from start to finish.

The Future of Fetish Fashion Shows: I like a mix of couture.

Lately there has been an influx of Latex Fashion as well as Lingerie.

It's also good to get representation of all forms of Alt/Fetish couture as that's what our audience want.

This year we have 2 collaborations it gives the Fashion Show a whole new direction where I can see this building up in the future.

Added to this we love seeing jewellery accessories being showcased as an outfit.

KINOKO WORKSHOPS Kinoko’s Updated TK3 In this step-by-step shibari course, Kinoko teaches an updated variation of his three-rope TK (takate kote) with his model hua hua.

Good tying is all about adaptation and development – finding what works… and then finding something that maybe works even better. Kinoko’s TK3 has undergone some tweaking, adapting and even simplifying since the early days of Shibari Study when it initially graced our screens as our very first Kinoko-taught tutorial and became a go-to TK for many. In this course, Kinoko not only teaches his modified version in detail, he also explains why, when it comes to safety, the very first knot you tie is also one of the most essential to perfect. The role of the hon-musubi or square knot. The knot used to secure the wrists in a TK, the focus of this class is understanding both why this tie is so important as well as how to tie it in such a way that it’s secure, compact and enhances the safety of your TK. Once your hon-musubi is perfected, it’s time to learn the updated TK3 Level of experience intermediate Web Harness In this exclusive class Hajime Kinoko teaches how to tie his magical "Web Shibari '' technique with his mode Benipeonia. This pattern d oesn’t have a fixed form, every time is different. This is what makes it so interesting but also such a difficult tie.

Level of experience Advanced Web Suspension In this exclusive class, Hajime Kinoko teaches how to tie his magical "Web Shibari" technique in suspension with his model Maya Homerton. Watch the Web Harness tutorial to learn the pattern used on the body. This suspension d oesn’t have a fixed form, every time is different. This is what makes it so interesting but also such a difficult and high risk exercise. This form requires a very high level of autonomy and confidence with suspensions and should only be performed by Expert Level practitioners.

NB/ participants must have completed the Web Harness session prior to participating in this workshops.

Kinoko's Hip Harness In this class, Hajime Kinoko teaches his Hip Harness for suspension with his model Maya Homerton.

Function meets form in this intermediate level harness. Kinoko’s hip-harness is designed in such a way that it enables comfortable suspensions for every body type without demanding a high level of flexibility. It offers sturdy hip support and reduces waist load (as opposed to Gorgone’s hip-harness designed for models with more back flexibility and who enjoy waist load), making it ideal if you’re looking to take some pressure off the lower back in bridge positions. This versatile tie is ideal for inversions and bridges and is solid enough to sustain dynamic transitions and self-suspensions.

Level of experience intermediate Strappado The term “strappado” comes from a medieval form of torture in which the victim’s hands were tied behind the back and, either by making him fall almost to the ground or by lifting him, his shoulders were dislocated or broken. There is no official term for it in Japan, although it is used by the Japanese and could be described as “ryo-ude ushiro awase shibari” (literally arm tied together behind back) or Ushiro tekubi shibari (wrists tied behind back).

The term is often used improperly when referring to the binding (armbinder), while on the other hand strappado is the use made of the binding itself.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD DOMINANT?

We often hear people in the scene talking about this Master or that Mistress, this Dom or that Domme, we hear good things and bad things, things to make our hair stand on end, things to make us laugh and things to make us cry.

Of course believing everything bad you hear, is not a good idea, as many statements come from rumours and hearsay.

It’s not only bad things we hear though, word of mouth recommendations are usually accurate, and so if someone tells you that Master X or Mistress Y is a good Dominant, then you could reasonably expect that to be close to the truth.

So what is it that makes a good Dominant – what qualities does a person need to wear such a label.

I have answered this question on other forums with this quote: 'A good dominant does not have to blow His own trumpet – he just “IS”. He doesn’t have to demand respect, He gets that anyway, He doesn’t have to announce to the world who He is, because His reputation and the respect of His peers precede Him.' Of course there is much more to it than a simple quote – the qualities in a good Dominant are many and varied and in reality the qualities are really attributed to the PERSON – by that i mean that a particular man (or woman) is a good Dominant because He or She possesses qualities that are the essence of a good person.

A good person has qualities such as kindness and consideration, empathy and sympathy, politeness and respect of others, honesty and ethics, and probably many more that could be added to this list.

A domineering person thinks that it is all about “being in charge” no matter what. Domineering people are often overbearing, loud and tyrannical – yes they exercise control, but it is done in an oppressive way, they are unjust and severe in their treatment of the people around them and their control is often enforced with threats of physical punishment and with no thought for anyone but themselves.

On the other hand, a Dominant person also exercises complete control but it is done in a more subtle way, with influences and thoughts rather than threats and physical punishments.

Dominants care about the people around them, and though they can be authoritarian and powerful, they have the utmost respect for others and a high level of care and consideration.

So a good Dominant, takes responsibility for the submissive or submissives in His life, he controls them and dominates them, but He is empathetic to them and sympathetic to their needs, understanding that for any submissive to give their best, they must be secure and confident in their submission.

A good Dominant is respectful of others, both submissive and dominant, and is not too proud to ask for advice or help if it is needed.

A good Dominant is the one whose name comes up in conversation time and time again, he is the one who is sought out for advice, or help.

He is the one who other Dominants aspire to be like, he is a role model to up and coming Dominants, and he is the one that many submissives would like to belong to.

It is those qualities which give a person the character, personality and skills to be good at anything he or she does, whether it be a career, family, or dominance – or submission for that matter.

A good Dominant is popular within the scene and makes time for everyone, and more importantly, does not belittle others, no matter what he may think. He treats everyone with respect and kindness, but does not suffer fools and is not afraid to speak his mind and tell someone off should it be necessary.

A good Dominant will not read a few pages on the internet, have a look through a book and then declare himself an experienced master with many years experience and several “trained submissives” under his belt.

He also tries to be non-political, as far as is possible, not entering into arguments or disagreements, but instead is more likely to act as a pacifier and an arbitrater in an effort to diffuse the situation rather than inflame it.

Most good Dominants have taken the time and trouble to attend workshops and seminars and have perhaps had lessons from or sought advice from other Dominants more experienced than themselves.

And of course with this, comes the “tall poppy” syndrome.

There are many so called Dominants who do not know the difference between being dominant and being domineering.

There are jealous people in every group or society, people who are consumed with it and who will try to discredit someone at every opportunity.

Most good Dominants simply ignore the criticisms and barbs aimed at them, as they are secure in

themselves and know that fires without fuel will eventually die.

i have been with a domineering man who thought he was a Dominant.

From a personal point of view, belonging to a Master whom many consider to be a “good dominant” and being well respected and high profile within the scene, also affects me and my life with Him.

This person convinced me that he knew it all, that he was experienced and had trained other submissives before me. He convinced me that there was no need to mix with others at events as that was for ‘newbies’ and was boring for anyone of his standard. How is that for arrogance!

I have to constantly share Him with others who need or want His attention. I have to understand that when we are out, people will gather around Him, He seems to draw people to him no matter where we are.

I also have to be very careful of any comments or actions of my own, as my behaviour is a direct reflection on Him. I am often asked by other submissives what life is like with Master Joe… Is He tyrannical and pedantic? Is He unreasonable?

Is the D/s as good as you thought it would be?

The answer is - yes He can be tyrannical, and pedantic and on occasions unreasonable, but tempered with that is the underlying caring and compassion and the fact that He is not thoughtless, or oppressive in His Domination. He simply wants things done His way, and if i conform to that, and conform to how He wishes me to behave, then there is never a problem.

He has taught me through encouragement and thought association, and not through threats of punishment or domineering behaviour. He does not say “My way or the highway” but more “My way, but we can discuss it and I will explain it so that you understand what is I am asking of you”

He had me on an emotional roller coaster for 8 months with no care or consideration for my feelings and my submission, just what he could get out of it. His punishments were harsh – and i know now, also dangerous.

There is a big difference between someone such as him, and my Master – they are worlds apart.

And to answer ‘is the D/s as good as i thought it would be’….. It is far better than i thought it would be – and i have learned many things about myself and my life.

There is no door except the one through which He can lead me. There is no end to this relationship as it is a never ending journey with so many new things to see and learn along the way.

So in conclusion, I can say that in my opinion, a good Dominant is the one who is looked up to by his peers and sought out by Dominants and submissives alike, for friendship, and advice. He is well respected and well liked due to his nature and personality, and gives much of himself to others.

That’s a great question, and one that really comes down to the individuals experiencing it. The studio is set up to be a kink and queer-friendly space for accommodation, content creation, workshops, and intimate events. It’s also a dungeon space available for kink professionals to work from.

On one hand it’s a beautiful, self-contained getaway for anyone looking for an intimate haven. The kink elements are somewhat hidden away in an array of custom-made furniture, so it doesn’t have to look like a traditional dungeon space. But flip open some doors, wheel out some tables, and you have a very different look. The wonder of this space is that it can be easily curated and arranged to suit the needs of those using it.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE STUDIO?

It’s been a passion project for a year now, but once we found the right space six months ago, every effort has been put into turning it into something that the community will want to share. We want it to be accessible, enjoyable, and evolving, and take it’s place amongst some of the ‘must visit’ places in Melbourne.

We want to offer people the experience of accessing a kink space for more than the few hours that most events allow so they can take their time with their scenes and really explore their desires and fetishes.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SEX

Let’s begin by defining what I mean by sex in the title. I am not only referring to penetrative sex I am also referring to sexual intimacy. Sex and intimacy are intertwined and sit on a continuum. Intimate actions can range from simple touch or hand-holding or cuddling to more focused and arousing touch and stroking. Sex can involve arousing touch and does not necessarily involve erections, lubrication, penetration (of any form), orgasms and ejaculations. Intimacy and sexual needs of partners normally vary – it is okay your “sex drives” do not match. Sex is not everything.

Sex is consistently rated as being important to a healthy and successful relationship if it is a source of discontent in the relationship. A lack of a happy and content sex life can be problematic for some relationships. Where couples do report a satisfying sex life, the importance of sex does not rate as highly.

Sex and Intimacy connects you as a couple. Sex and intimacy is about building and maintaining love and trust. When we engage in intimacy and sexual play with our partner/s we are asking them to trust us and we are trusting them.

We expose ourselves (literally and figuratively) when we engage in intimacy and sexual play. When we respond positively to our partner’s intimate acts towards us we are displaying acceptance of them and their desire to express connection with us. Our acceptance also extends to accepting them as a person and their body. Connection is also important to maintaining good psychological and physical health.

People in (healthy) relationships recover from major surgery and illness at a faster rate other people and connections build resilience and helps us build defences against stress. Intimacy and sex strengthens our bonds through the release of oxytocin – our “attachment” hormone; it is released during orgasm and strengthens our attachments and emotional bonds. We also release another chemical called “dopamine” which allows us to have good feelings towards others and helps us create healthy bonds. The combination of the two means a happy, healthy attachments.

It makes us happy. A healthy relationship has happy partners and happy partners are help form a healthy relationship. During sexual intimacy and play our bodies release serotonin – a hormone which regulates our moods and helps us feel happier. At orgasm we get an extra shot of serotonin and this is often why we feel “extra” happy after sex. Dopamine is another happy hormone we release during sexual intimacy and play. Dopamine also helps for feel pleasure and satisfaction.

Sex can help de-stress and relax us (as does masturbation). Let’s face it sexual intimacy and play can involve a bit of a work out at times. The release of muscle tension is also good and as already noted assisted by the release of our happy hormones. Oxytocin is especially responsible for its anti-stress capacities; its ability to help the body (and mind) to repair and restore, and increased feelings of calmness. On a more basic level, if nothing else the act of connecting with our partner means we are not thinking about the stress in our lives.

Sex helps build self-esteem. Sexual intimacy and play is an act of giving and receiving – it is an exchange between partners. When we give of ourselves and our partner/s accepts – this act reenforces our acceptance and ability to meet our partner’s desires. The acceptance of our partner/s of our actions also re enforces acceptance of us.

Sex builds body acceptance. Like with self-esteem, sex also can help build body acceptance. Many people have issues with one or another aspect of their body. Through sexual intimacy and play we also expose our bodies. Our partner/s willingness to engage with our body is a great way for us to challenge our ideas about our bodies. Bodily exposure is another vulnerability of people and this, for some people, is great challenge. When our partner/s respond to our bodies, (self-) perceived flaws and all, it is one-way for us to know we are okay.

Sexual intimacy and sexual play provides us with time-out from the pressures of our life. It allows to express love and closeness through sharing with our partner/s. It also allows us to be vulnerable

safely. Allowing ourselves to be vulnerable also allows us to take off the masks and anxieties of the world and to be ourselves. With our partners we know we will be accepted no matter what.

Sexual intimacy and sexual play is important to a relationship. The level of importance varies between and amongst couples. I often find in my practice, where discord is present in a relationship the importance of sex increases. Yet the underlying issue is the sense of connection between the partner/s is lost. Sexual intimacy and sexual play has many benefits – connection is one of these.

So to build a healthy and happy relationship remember to include sexual intimacy and sexual play.

SUSPENDING DISBELIEF The Carnie Comes Back After blowing our collective mind at last year’s Oz Kink Fest, as a performer, presenter, and genuinely amazing human, Tom Hill AKA The_Carnie is returning to our shores with his brand of kink that’s sure to keep you hooked.

MisKnickers caught up with Tom to chat Art, Kink, and what working in the festival space means for him.

Greetings Tom, and thanks so much for your time. It strikes me that you are quite involved in both the Art and fetish spaces, and often simultaneously. Do you primarily consider yourself an Artist or a kinkster?

This is such a multi-level, complex question to answer. I am a maker first and foremost. I have a private studio where I make my visual arts and I own a ceramics studio. Formally I have my degrees in art and have taught in the arts for many years.

I have several galleries within the USA which shows and regularly sells my art. I feel I explored my sexuality early in my teenage years. After having been sexually assaulted as a youth I went seeking in kink to figure myself out and take back control over my body.

Fast forward many years later, I have been able to tightly interweave my kinks, art, work, and life all together.

For many of us, interweaving those passions and making it productive is such a dream… How did you discover your passion for each of them?

My passion for art started innocently with spending so much time with my grandmother who taught me the foundations of art including how to sew. The realization of kink in my life was when I was in my parents’ basement (as a teenager) branding protection symbols into my flesh, orgasming from the experience.

What similarities or differences do you see in the kink space and the art space?

Within both spaces there’s this idea of transformation of the space to take you into another place. Through thoughts, taking the mind to another place, the physical, controlling the space, sensorial. Both kink and art are thoughtfully curated, take the participants into another place. Experience the moment, being present, and open.

Is there a definitive place in your life where these practices cross-over?

Pertaining specifically to needles, my full-time job is to pierce.

You've been involved in many festivals, events, and largescale projects - what have been some of your career highlights?

Yes, I have. I like to quietly sit back take it in and when it’s my time to perform to blow people’s minds. Leaving an incredible experience and fading back to watch how it was received. I’ve travelled all over the world. Last year’s event (OKF) finally gave me the chance to say I’ve performed/lectured on every continent except for Antarctica. I sleep on every flight I take. I love food so any chance I can to try local dishes, I’m down. I drink a lot of tea, so when I travel, I always hunt for a place to has great tea.

In 2022, you were a highlight for many Oz Kink Fest attendees - How was the experience for you?

I’m glad to hear many kink fest attendees enjoyed attending my classes, seeing me work on the various hook Suspensions and pulls. Also the hook Suspension performance at the nightclub I was glad to blow people away with. I was so welcomed, so much so I had to come back. I do wish more people would have come to speak/hangout with me throughout the time I was there.

Well, hopefully anyone seeing this interview will feel a bit more comfortable approaching you this year. Did you have a personal highlight from last year?

This is specifically pertaining to the hook Suspension performance at the club. The person I worked with we finally met in person four hours prior to the event starting (we video chat and corresponded months previously - consented to all of what you saw and extensively went over safety). Not only just physically meeting but it was also their first hook Suspension.

You all got to witness the raw pure emotional and physical energy which we both felt.

That was such an incredible night, and your connection was palpable. It definitely left a lot of us wanting more!

Can you give us any clues or teasers for what you might have on offer this year?

How do I top last year? I can’t. But what I can bring is an authentic experience for people to watch it naturally play out.

That sounds perfect. Is there anything in particular you're looking forward to?

Reconnecting with people I previously met and hopefully many more.

One of the Greatest Moves of All Time After fantastic feedback from her inaugural Caning presentation at Oz Kink Fest 2022, Mistress Zoe Demure is set to return.

Due to popular demand she’s back with her Caning class, and in addition, Zoe is also presenting a workshop on Ownership: The Psychology and Practice.

MisKnickers took some time to connect with Mistress Zoe to discover just how and why one becomes so proficient with a cane.

What drew you to the cane? And do you remember the first time you wielded one?

I can remember when I was an apprentice, being given the opportunity to cane one of my head Mistresses clients for the first time and it was in a training context with another apprentice, and I was just naturally good at it. It made sense to me. It felt good in my hand. And I swung the cane and it landed exactly where I wanted it to… It felt just like a duck to water. It just fit really well. And I practiced and practiced and later on, my head Mistress was watching me cane someone again and she said watching you cane is like watching poetry.

And I’ve always remembered that. It was one of the best compliments she ever gave me. It was just one of those things that made me feel powerful. It made me feel competent… And I just fell in love with it.

It’s also extreme pain, and I think with extreme pain comes extremely positive results. So of all the tools in my toolbox, it’s the one I can get the best effect with.

You’re regarded as somewhat of a specialist with the cane. How did you train up to become a specialist? How do you know you’re at a place when it’s a speciality?

If you can cane somebody and be able to hit them exactly the way they want to be hit. So most of my clients want to be hit on their bottom, and you basically are drawing a square box in the location that’s the safest and for them the most optimal, I guess. And if you ever stray out of that zone, and never hit them in the wrong place then you’re able to cane proficiently.

But I also think it’s not just about the placement, it’s also about the ability to hit really, really heavy. A lot of the mistresses I’ve seen cane people over the years, their placement is good, their ability to do the fantasy is really really good – so their acting or roleplay – but they just cannot hit them hard enough.

So they say ‘y’know, this is the maximum that I will hit’ and you can see the client is like ‘Oh okay then. Right’, rather than ‘Whoah! Far out! That’s intense!’, y’know?

So I think having the strength and the ability to hit someone extremely heavy – but also be able to hit someone really light and be able to judge what a person is going to need. One persons ‘really heavy’ is going to be much different to someone else’s, but having that scope is really important.

How should those new to caning approach it? eg. are there skills that should ideally be learned first? Are there other implements that it would be good to have a working knowledge of?

I think you can start straight away with the cane. I don’t think you need to practice other implements first cos each implement is going to have a slightly different skillset and movement required. But I do think that it’s important to begin very light.

Even if you’re just lightly tapping the person that you’re caning then that’s good. So you build up slowly with the intensity and don’t go beyond what you can safely do.

Even if you’re just lightly tapping the person and getting a feel of what the implement feels like in your hand and then when you get to the point when you can actually leave a mark on somebody, then looking to see, is that mark straight? And if not, adjusting so you can get it straight the next time. But if you want to start practicing really heavy hits without the concern for safety, one option would be to get a pillow and put some tape on the pillow to outline where you want to hit and then try to hit exactly in that spot where that tape is and go as hard as you can. So that way you can get in tonnes of practice. If you want to get good at something, you just have to do it. That’s really what it comes down to. There’s that whole idea that if you do something for ten thousand hours, you’re gonna be a master at it. That’s true. And it’s not any different for caning, so if you don’t have the opportunity to practice all the time with a human bottom, or you want to get proficient at hitting really heavy before you go in for a human bottom then utilising the pillow with the tape is a really good way to practice.

Why do you think the cane is such a strong symbol in the BDSM scene?

I guess because its maximum pain. And we play with really heavy intense emotions when we cane. That’s what comes to mind when I think about it. And it’s the classic dominatrix look.

And a classic fantasy that a lot of people grow up with cos they were caned in school potentially. And so then the desire to have a beautiful woman caning them and bringing them to the brink of tears or ecstasy or whatever that intense emotion is going to be for them is a really intense pull.

What is your favourite type of cane, and why?

My favourite is the dragon cane, which is made from a special dragon rattan. And that’s because the dragon has the strongest substance but it’s still quite flexible, depending on the diameter. But the knots on the rattan are very far apart, and the knot is where there is a weakness. So the closer the knots are together, the more weaknesses there are on a cane.

So if you buy a dragon cane it should only have maybe two knots on it, maybe three depending on how long the cane is.

But if you were to buy a kooboo cane or a cane from a different kind of wood – like, for example I used to buy canes that were made from beechwood and they would always break. That’s not to say that a dragon cane won’t break – it potentially could – but dragon canes is by far the strongest and heaviest of all of the canes. What sort of scenes are best suited to caning play? (any particular role play? particular kinks that the cane is good for?)

Obviously, school roleplays are the classic one – teacher student, or head mistress and student, or even prefect.

Governess… all those are classic role plays. But I really like playing with the cane without a role play too. It doesn’t have to be in the context of a role play.

I have spent a lot of time developing skills around caning using audio – so caning to the beat of a song, so percussion impact play. Or I’ve taught myself to cane in the dark, so playing around with sensory deprivation as well. So there’s a variety of different things you can do with the cane that don’t involve necessarily involve a specific roleplay but can still be amazing and intense.

What are you most looking forward to at this year’s OKF? I think I’m really looking forward to attending some of the other workshops and learning some stuff myself. And I’m looking forward to connecting to people in the community and having some great conversations.

Mistress Electra Amore has been involved in Oz Kink Fest in an array of roles, spanning many years. With so much knowledge and experience of the fetish and BDSM lifestyle, she is always a sought-after presence and welcome addition.

MisKnickers caught up with Electra to chat about her experiences with Oz Kink Fest, from its evolution to its possible directions for the future.

Electra, I can’t think of a year you haven’t been involved in Oz Kink Fest. When did you first become involved?

There have been so many OKF that I actually can't remember what my first involvement was. I know early on I had a stall at Fetish Expo for Bella Rubber, selling latex sheeting. This was back in the Fitzroy Town Hall era, so it was small compared to what it is now, but still fruitful and full of people coming in and shopping around.

With so many years of involvement, can you give us an idea of some of the aspects you’ve been active in?

Attending the international presenters’ workshops of Midori, Satomi, Lukas Zapari etc. I had a store at the Expo selling latex sheeting and clothing, then the following year Bella Rubber was in the Fashion show. I’ve modelled for “Yes Mz” in the fashion show, and last year I was one of the Judges for the first Ms Rubber. I’ve attended many of the Hellfire Resurrection nights, won the best dressed a few times, and was a judge of the best dressed at Fetish Expo after party. With the help of Our Kink, hosted an evening called (f)Risky Business, where a panel of Fetish people who worked in the fetish industry as Domme, subs, switches, independent and in-house, answered questions from the audience. As you can see, a variety of aspects.

How have you seen the festival evolve?

It’s bloomed. It’s gone from this tiny little community event to a national, worldwide event. Every time I attend it just seems to get bigger and bigger and bigger – more people, more stalls, more workshops, more local designers…

Why do you enjoy the festival so much?

The anticipation of what is new and who I’m going to be seeing each year. The fetish fashion always excites me, particularly at HellFire Resurrection. Catching up with all the interstate and international friends and kink people.

Shopping at the fetish market. Making new kink friends…

What are you looking forward to this year?

Definitely the workshop intensive weekend. It’s my favourite part. I love that moment when you’re teaching in a class and you see people get it. That uh-huh moment of ‘Oh my gosh, now I get it’, or ‘wow, I never would have considered doing that’. They’re my little gems that keep me inspired to teach.

The only downside is when you are a presenter at the intensive, it doesn’t give you a chance to sit in other presenters' classes or even get to meet the international presenters.

And what will you be teaching this year?

I’m repeating my most popular workshops this year: Switching it up - exploring both dynamics Impulsive and Domestic Bondage Play Impact Play & how to use each Implement Embracing your Dominance I create my workshops with the intention to be hands-on, interactive and to allow the participants to learn in a manner that sculpts their mind, broadens their horizons, and brings a sense of joy and safety when learning the art of BDSM, fetish, kink, and role play techniques.

What would you like to see in OKF's future?

There are a few international presenters I would love to see come back!

And I’m even toying with the idea of holding a store this year at the market advertising the mentoring, training programs and workshops Anne O Nomis and I are conducting.

Last year was my favourite year so far. After a few years in lock down, it was amazing to return to OKF. There was so much heartfelt interaction attending the events. People were truly happy to see one another and that just brought a depth to the community I hadn’t felt before.

It warms my heart that Oz Kink Fest is one big community of kinky love.
