KARL June marks the beginning of summer and what’s not to love about summer? Sunshine, blue skies, BBQs, family, friends and vacations are just a few things that come to mind. What also comes to mind for me is work! When I was in school (a long time ago), I couldn’t wait for summer because it gave me the opportunity to work hard all day long. The good weather brings everyone out in full force to put our ideas and goals to work. It creates an atmosphere of excitement and teamwork with our coworkers, customers and communities. We get to be a part of building the roads, schools, hospitals and homes for our families and friends. Being the manager of our international operations has given me a broader perspective on the community of people around the world that we have an opportunity to impact. We are working with friends in Asia, Europe, Africa, India, Australia and beyond. Each of us come together to share our unique gifts and talents for the common goal of doing something great. Never underestimate your value and position in creating a positive impact. The world is taking notice! I look forward to catching up with all those I currently work with and those that I have yet to meet!

COWORKERS Congratulations to Don Hart on 40 Years of Service Don Hart has experienced a lot during his 40 years with Ozinga. Not only has he had the ability to work with three generations of Ozinga ownership, but he’s also had the opportunity to grow in his roles and responsibilities. Don started his journey with Ozinga as a ready mix driver. After 10 years, he became plant manager at Crown Point, a role he held for 20 years. Don then transitioned to IT where he worked on computers and helped build and take down plants. Today, Don handles all the maintenance for the Northwest Indiana plants. When asked why he stays with Ozinga, Don said, “I’ve personally dealt with the Ozinga family for three generations, and they’ve always treated me right. They’ve made my career a gift and taken really good care of me.”

Now that nice weather is finally here, remember to work safe so we can enjoy the things we like to do in our free time. Don’t let an injury spoil your summer! As Ozinga’s safety director, I investigate all the injuries that occur across the company. Sometimes it happens to a new coworker, but many times it happens to a veteran. Sometimes it’s caused by a distraction, other times by rushing - but most accidents happen when we get complacent. We do the same thing over and over and forget that it can actually be dangerous. We get used to the risk and start thinking about other things…then something is different and catches us by surprise. Please keep your eyes open, head in the game and expect the unexpected. Have a safe summer! 5

Treat People Remember that feeling of your first day on the job at Ozinga – how it felt, what you thought about on the way in, and all of the questions you had? Maybe you contemplated if you made the right choice, and if you’d really like your new career. In fact, if you started a while ago, your first day may have been a blur of paperwork and possibly even a little chaos as you found your way initially. As we grow, we become more aware of the overall experience we want our new coworkers to enjoy on their first day and beyond. Newhire orientation gives us the opportunity not only to share with folks the history of the organization, our values and our products/ services, but it also allows us to set a feeling of welcome and acceptance. On day one we set that expectation of how people should feel working at Ozinga. The feeling that everyone is important, and their role supports, and is supported by, the organization as a whole. How we feel as coworkers bleeds into our relationships with our customers and into our communities. Think about the best customer service you’ve ever received. What made it good service? Now think about yourself. Would you want to do business with you? What you do and how you do it affects everyone in your path. How you show up, act and react, as well as your overall communication with people makes a huge difference. According to a recent poll by American Express, “7 out of 10 U.S. consumers say they’ve spent more money to do business 6
with a company that delivers great service.” If Ozinga keeps how we treat people at the forefront of our priorities, we can continue to offer positive experiences with everything we do. Happy customers mean our name and brand are strong. A strong name and brand mean we’re busy – and busy is great! In the midst of the hustle and bustle, please don’t
forget to consider the way you make people feel. It takes some intentionality, but it’s worth every minute. We depend on one another to uphold the Ozinga brand, to help our toughest customers feel heard and understood, and to continue to make other coworkers feel welcome and accepted. Take a moment to ask yourself: What am I doing to make sure I am making a positive impact on the people I work with and in the community where I live? If you answered quickly, please keep doing it! If you struggled to answer, consider starting small. Try getting to know a new coworker or spending an extra moment on the phone to wrap up a call. Positive engagement with our coworkers and customers will help foster that feeling of being exactly where they are meant to be and doing business with the best – you!

CUSTOMERS KAMRYN OLIVIA RECEIVES CERTIFICATE OF INSPECTION The Kamryn Olivia received its Certificate of Inspection (COI) from the US Coast Guard, which conducts routine inspections to ensure all towing vessels comply with safety standards. Middle River Marine not only complies with public sector regulations, USCG’s Subchapter M, but is also a part of a private sector safety organization called the American Waterway Operators (AWO), which implements its own Responsible Carrier Program (RCP). Jamie Long and Captain Jason Pijanowski accepted the COI on behalf of the Kamryn Olivia.
OZINGA FUEL STATIONS NOW RUN ON RNG Ozinga fuel stations now run on renewable natural gas (RNG) that is supplied from a landfill in Texas. RNG is the best alternative fuel when it comes to reducing carbon footprint, and every heavy-duty CNG ready mix truck refueling with RNG eliminates approximately one metric ton of CO2 emissions. “The reason we chose to go with RNG is because it carries a negative carbon footprint,” said Jeff Bonnema, Vice President of Fleet Management. “We are concerned with our environment, and by using RNG, we can capture the energy we need to fuel our trucks and have a positive influence on our air and water.”

NOT ALL OZINGA CONCRETE BLOCKS ARE THE SAME In Florida, the technical name is concrete masonry units (CMU). They have also been called cinder or breeze blocks due to the various cementitious material used; hollow blocks due to their shape; or high-density blocks due to compact design. These blocks are made by batching concrete for direct production, forcing it into molds and then kilning to cure. They are mainly used for home or building construction by bricklayers using mortar. In the IL, WI, and IN markets, our concrete blocks are made and look much different. These blocks use leftover concrete poured into large forms. This saves us from having to send unused returns to landfills. Once dry, these blocks range in weight from 600 – 10,000 lbs. and are used as retaining walls, building ramps, bins for dry bulk storage, security for industrial yards, traffic control, or counter weights. These blocks interlock to create a strong and secure fit for industrial uses.

This box includes a challenge coin, an overview of Ozinga and our services, and a gift certificate to our store. This small gesture is just one way we let our customers know how much we appreciate them.

Home of the Windy City Thunderbolts, the newly named Ozinga Field stadium offers plenty of fun and entertainment for families. Aaron Ozinga threw out the first pitch at the team’s home opener against the Evansville Otters. Ozinga Visits Southwest Chicago Christian School Ozinga visited Southwest Chicago Christian School’s Tinley Park campus. Jeff Ozinga, EVP, met with the preschool class to show them what concrete is and how it’s made. The children also were able to see how a ready mix truck works, took turns sitting inside the truck and left with a bag of Ozinga goodies. 10
