balls and avoid knocking them over. A point system is awarded at each stage depending on performance. Ozinga entered three drivers this year: • Bruce Mitchell from our Gary plant and the 2019 defending champion placed 2nd this year and was edged out by 1 point! • Kelly Jenkins from our South Bend location, who placed 4th in the 2019 event, performed well and just missed the top three this year. • Newcomer Kevin Jancovich from our Bremen location made a strong effort for a first time contestant.

CHICAGO HOSTS REDZONE MEETINGS The annual Chicago RedZone Safety Meeting is an opportunity to offer continual training to enhance the professionalism and sharpen the skills of our drivers. A special focus of the 2021 RedZone Safety Meetings was the danger posed by passenger-side blind spots and the special care and concern needed to watch for bicyclists and pedestrians. Ozinga believes that coworkers are our most valuable asset and each coworker’s safety and health are as important for the success of the company as production, service and quality.

SOUTH FLORIDA HOSTS SUMMER SAFETY BASH Our South Florida region held two Summer Safety Bash events for our coworkers. These events were held at Dave & Busters locations, and coworkers who attended got to enjoy some time away from work with coworkers as well as learn more about the safety strategies at Ozinga.

THREE OZINGA DRIVERS TEST THEIR SKILLS AT THE IRMCA TRUCK RODEO On Saturday, September 11, 2021, Ozinga participated in the Indiana Ready Mix Concrete Association’s annual truck rodeo. This rodeo consisted of nine different challenges, ranging from pulling up to a mock railroad crossing—with the objective to not be closer than 15 feet—to driving through a series of tennis Continued on next page

What made the event unique this year was the inclusion of student volunteers from the Hamilton Heights trade school program. About 25 young men helped to monitor the stations and score the drivers. This event gave the students, who are interested in careers in the construction world, exposure to the ready-mix concrete industry. The IRMCA has been actively recruiting young men and women who are not taking the college route to explore our industry and other trades.

RMX DRIVER RICK DEMIK CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY IN STYLE Ready mix driver Rick Demik has a lot of fun on his birthday. So much so that he dresses up in a suit every year to celebrate. This year was by far one of the best suits he’s donned. When asked about his birthday attire, Rick said, “I wear my birthday suit every year to celebrate my birthday.” Thank you for putting a smile on all our faces, Rick. And happy belated birthday to you! 3

FAMILIAR FACES GATHER FOR ALUMNI BREAKFAST CLUB

ALUMNI WITH HISTORY THE COX/BABCOCK FAMILY

On Saturday, August 14, a group of Ozinga Alumni met for breakfast at the Olympic Star Restaurant in Tinley Park, IL. The retirees meet the second Saturday of each month. Hope to see more Alumni there in the future!

It’s no secret that many of our coworkers have had family members working for our company too—allowing us to truly make a positive impact for generations. The Cox/Babcock family is one example. Wally Cox Sr. started at Griffith Redi Mix in 1951 as a driver. Griffith was acquired by Ozinga in the 1970s, and Wally Sr. came to join the Ozinga team. As time progressed, he transitioned from driver to loader out of the Portage plant, and he remained in that position until his retirement in 1983. Wally Cox, Wally Sr.’s son, also started at Griffith Redi Mix in 1968 as a driver. After the acquisition, he remained a driver out of the Portage plant before serving as plant manager at other locations. He would also continue driving until his retirement from Ozinga in 1998.

When he was driving out of the Crown Point plant, Wally’s grandsons Zach and Evan would stand along the fence in Ron Babcock’s (Wally’s son-in-law) yard as the Ozinga trucks would drive down Summit Street to see if their grandpa was the driver. Ron started at Ozinga in 1998 as a mechanic, and continues to keep the fleet of trucks in Crown Point and Cedar Lake safely operating today.

New Memories Made at Alumni Social

Phil Tempelman Retires with Perfect Attendance

Approximately 50 retirees and past alumni, along with some friendly active coworkers, gathered at the Mokena office to enjoy fellowship and refreshments on September 29. A special thank you to Ozinga retiree Rich VanDerMuil who volunteered his time and talents as DJ for the event.

Phil Tempelman, a crane operator from our Chicago region, recently retired. During his time here, he not only was an asset to our team, but also prided himself on his work ethic and attendance. He was the recipient of the Chicago Perfect Attendance award five years in a row!

The Merry Mixer is coming to town

(AGAIN)!

Tis the season! Check out the Merry Mixer schedule at themerrymixer.com.

Illinois South Driver Makes a POSITIVE IMPACT On September 15, ILS ready mix driver Dan Carr was at a pour in Lombard when a neighbor walked out hauling a bag of yard rubbish on a dolly that was bigger than her. Dan walked over and helped the neighbor bring the rubbish to its desired location. The neighbor said something to Dan, and without hesitation he walked into her backyard and grabbed more bags. Ready mix driver David Garthrite saw the whole exchange and shared the story. He said, “I love being around people like Dan.” 10

OZINGA COMPLETES INDIANAPOLIS FEDEX EXPANSION PROJECT On August 26, Ozinga and Walsh Construction of Indiana poured the last bit of concrete for the FedEx project at the Indianapolis International Airport. Starting in the spring of 2019 and totaling 187,313 cubic yards, this project has expanded the number of gates for the FedEx operation at the airport. According to John Grothaus, vice president of operations for Indiana West, “This was a perfect example of One Ozinga. A maintenance team from Illinois worked with the Indiana West maintenance team to put the plant up, and members of the maintenance team from Indiana East made the trip south to help take it down.” Billy Byrd was responsible for batching and managing the daily operations. Jake Lackey handled quality control on site and kept the mixes dialed in. Not only was this a total team effort to achieve success, but it was also a nice warm-up—our Indiana team will be on site again with Walsh Construction at the Indianapolis Airport in 2022 to tackle a 6-month, 160,0000-cubic-yard runway expansion project.
