Local 673 Drivers and Mechanics Receive Smith Certification Ozinga’s Local 673 drivers and mechanics are the first in our company to complete the Smith Drivers Training, with each one earning certification to become a safer driver. The Smith System is the nation’s first fleet driver safety training organization, delivering behind-the-wheel instruction to more than 250,000 drivers annually. Mick Jansey and Bill Cummings went through a week-long class to earn their certification and become Smith training instructors. These two then taught all of our Local 673 drivers and mechanics the Smith Driving System—and they did this all within one month. With this certification, our drivers should experience fewer accidents, less wear and tear on the vehicles, save money on fuel and insurance and maintain compliance. Other local unions throughout Ozinga are currently going through the same training.

FIND YOUR PURPOSE AND MAKE AN IMPACT As the third-generation owners of the company, Marty Ozinga III, Rich and Jim knew the purpose of their work – to honor and glorify God and to serve the crown of His creation, our fellow man. It was evident in the way they worked and the way they ran the company until passing the baton to the fourth generation several years ago. With the recent loss of Marty III, he leaves a legacy of thankfulness for God’s grace and of service to others. As we venture towards 2030 and beyond, Ozinga exists to have a positive impact on individuals, their families, and the community for generations. What does that mean for you as a coworker? How can you find meaning in your day-to-day work? Here are four choices you can intentionally make to help you find your purpose at work and ensure that you have a positive impact that will last (for generations).

Choose to value your history. There is value in the experiences and circumstances that have brought you to Ozinga. We each bring a unique perspective and set of abilities to work every day. If we value our own uniqueness and the uniqueness of others, we will be more open to seeing the distinctive opportunities we have to make a positive impact. When you can see these opportunities, you can see more clearly why you are here and the difference that only you can make.

Choose to adjust your focus. It’s been said that what we focus on tends to grow in our minds. If we focus on ourselves, our needs, and the problems we face, they tend to grow and consume our thoughts. What if we could adjust our focus onto others, their needs and all that we have for which to be grateful? Then we could start to see how we could help, even if in small ways. What if we could think of our coworkers in terms of 4

their strengths instead of their weaknesses? Then we could see how working together makes us more effective. Only you can determine your focus, but it takes intentionality and practice.

Choose to do your work with excellence. How you do your work matters. Think about who is served by the work you do. Who benefits when you do it well? Who pays the price when it’s not done well or done with a surly attitude? What impact do you want to have on them? How can the work you do be beneficial to future generations? Giving some thought to these questions can help you see how you and your work matter to others.

Choose to embrace the values of service, learning and entrepreneurship. Ozinga’s values are a good place to start in discovering your own purpose and impact. Selfless service will help you focus on others’ needs and see how you are in a unique position to help and encourage them. Lifelong learning will keep you relevant and open to new ideas that need your energy and experience to be implemented. Everyday entrepreneurship will help you be part of positive change for which you, your skills and your experiences are vital. Four choices. They’re simple, but not easy. When you choose to value your history, you’ll be able to see more clearly how you are uniquely positioned for the opportunities you face. When you choose to adjust your focus to the needs of others, you’ll see how you can help. When you choose to work with excellence, you’ll see how you and your work matters. Lastly, when you choose to embrace Ozinga’s values, you’ll be in a position to see opportunities to use your gifts and abilities. In seeing these things, perhaps you’ll have a little clearer picture of why you’re here and the difference you make.

A Peek at the Geeks: Meet Tom Allen | Director of Infrastructure since Sept. 1991 What is your hidden talent? I can talk like Donald Duck. What do you find the most challenging at Ozinga? Keeping the cameras clean. What is your favorite part about working for Ozinga? Great coworkers!

What others are saying about Tom: Tell us a story about Tom: Tom has a tendency to not throw old tech things away. We joke about Tom being that dad who keeps everything because it’s all “perfectly fine” and “might be needed someday.” Sometimes we throw obsolete tech in the recycle bin to see if he’ll notice. He does. He definitely does. When you think of this team member, what is your first thought? Tom cares about quality work and takes pride in a job well done. He does not take shortcuts when addressing a problem. 6

TAKE A BREAK. DRIVE AWAKE. Drowsy driving is a dangerous behavior that can result in serious injury or death. But despite the risks, drowsy driving is far too prevalent. Drowsy driving is estimated to contribute to as many as 1.2 million collisions, resulting in potentially 5,000 to 8,000 fatalities per year. To avoid drowsy driving, you should follow the Sleep Well, Be Well method: Get 7 or more hours of sleep each night Avoid alcohol, smoking or caffeine before bed Keep a consistent sleep schedule 7

Ozinga Pours Concrete for Conco Mine The Conco mine is approximately 40 miles west of downtown Chicago along Interstate 88 in North Aurora, lying on the east bank of the Fox River and crossing under the Illinois Tollway. In 2006, LafargeHolcim purchased the operation and renamed it the Conco mine. Limestone and dolomite, which are roughly 450 million years old, are removed on three levels underground. Ozinga supplied 23 cubic yards of concrete for a pad that will hold a drill rig that will cut a 50-foot-deep and 12-foot-wide ventilation shaft from Level 2 to Level 3 – which is approximately 300 feet below the surface. Ozinga trucks had to navigate a 1,200-foot decline at 17% grade to enter the dark mine. Becky Kazmierski, the Conco engineer, escorted our trucks to the site underground and then back to surface once complete. As the engineer, Becky performs a variety of tasks that include surveying new areas of the quarry that they intend to retrieve aggregate from. The process includes drilling and blasting the rock with explosives to produce very large pieces of aggregate (think small car size) that then are transported via haulers to the underground crusher. The crusher reduces the size of the rock down even further, where it is then transported via conveyer belt to the surface to be processed down to different sizes that are used in a variety of construction needs, including ready mix concrete use. 8

Red Nose Day For years, South Florida QC Manager Howard Livingston has supported Red Nose Day, a charity that supports ending child poverty. This year, he purchased bracelets for all South Florida coworkers and distributed them out to as many as he could. While doing so, he explained the charity and let our coworkers know where they could donate if they were interested. To learn more about the charity, visit rednoseday.org

Ozinga Inducted into B20 Club of Illinois Thanks to our commitment to run our fleet on alternative fuels, Ozinga was recently inducted into the B20 Club of Illinois. This organization is comprised of a partnership between the Illinois Soybean Association (ISA) and the American Lung Association, and it recognizes a select group of Illinois-based organizations with strong commitments to run fleets on biodiesel blends of 20 percent or greater. “I would encourage any fleet – large or small – to consider using drop-in B20 biodiesel,” said Jeff Bonnema, vice president of fleet management. “It has been an easy and cost-effective way for us to reduce our emissions and protect the health of our coworkers, customers and the communities we proudly serve.”
