A Message from Tim PRESERVING THE OZINGA BRAND People often ask me how Ozinga has been around for so long, especially since we celebrated our 90th anniversary last year. We’ve been in business through recessions and economic downturns—no matter what the economy looks like, we’ve continued to thrive year after year. What’s our secret?

It’s our purpose and values that have sustained us, but also our unique Ozinga brand that we’ve honed through the decades. Our amazing coworkers, our sterling reputation with customers and competitors alike and the awards we win each year are all a testament to the strong brand we’ve established for ourselves.

We are one Ozinga, regardless of business unit or plant location, and we all need to work together to preserve the Ozinga voice and brand values throughout all our regions and business units.

WE ALL NEED TO WORK TOGETHER TO PRESERVE THE OZINGA VOICE AND BRAND VALUES THROUGHOUT ALL OUR REGIONS AND BUSINESS UNITS.

It’s important that every product with the Ozinga name, from signs and business cards, to t-shirts and letterhead, stay aligned with our overarching brand standards.

If a customer or coworker visits an Ozinga plant or yard in Illinois, the signs throughout the facility should be the same as the ones you’d see in Wisconsin. Keeping our marketing and communication materials uniform ensures that our customers know they can expect the same exceptional service no matter who they’re meeting with or which Ozinga facility they’re visiting.

COWORKERS Clare Huizenga Sr. Clare Huizenga Sr., retired Ozinga coworker, is nearly 90 years old and legally blind. However, there is one thing he still enjoys doing: reading the Ozinga newsletter. Clare receives the newsletter at his home in Silver Lake, Michigan and to the best of his ability keeps up with the current news and information that Ozinga offers.

Since its inception in 1979, the newsletter has been a part of Clare’s life — after all, he created it. It was called the “Ozinga Bros. Inc. Blot” and unlike the one you are reading today with high-resolution pictures, graphics and multiple writers, Clare’s version featured want ads, funny stories and birth announcements.

Clare started in the spring of 1954 under the second generation of Ozinga leadership hauling bags of coal. In the span of his 37-year career at Ozinga, Clare worked for both the second and third generation of owners and watched the company grow into what it is today. He took on many roles during that time: RMC driver, quality control technician, batch man, yard worker, office manager and editor before retiring in 1991.

The Huizenga family continues to work for Ozinga, with Clare Huizenga Jr. (Clare’s son) working as a mechanic in Mokena, and Isaac Huizenga (Clare’s grandson) working as an aggregate gradation control system technician.

Don Hart

Don Hart’s long career in the RMC industry started in April of 1979 as a driver for Milbrath Ready Mix Concrete in Gary. Four years later, Ozinga purchased Milbrath and fortunately for us, Don was part of that package. After 10 years of driving, Jim Ozinga asked Don to be the plant manager at the Crown Point location. Since then, Don has managed all of the Indiana West plants. He has worked with Tom Allen installing and upgrading office phone systems. He has also worked with Jeff Bailey installing computer batching systems, as well as wiring and firing 4

Continued from page 4 up the Henry sand pit. Most recently, he served as plant maintenance manager. Don has been a teacher and mentor to many new faces, and he is always willing to share his knowledge and experience. Don and his wife Annette will be traveling (in his little red Corvette), and they will continue to stay actively involved with the Shriner’s Children Hospital. We wish Don health and happiness in his new phase of life!

Paul Winkle Sr. by Paul Winkle Jr. How many people do you know who work full time for 55 years? How many people do you know who work for the same company for 55 years? I hope you will all congratulate my father, Paul Winkle Sr., who officially retired at the end of 2019. Granted, I’m more than a bit biased, but next to the Ozinga family, there hasn’t been anyone who has done more for our company, the people in it and our customers than my father.

He’d be the first to say that working at Ozinga molded most of his life. Through the years he has hauled and sold more than a million yards of concrete, but his greater mark on the company is how he represented Ozinga and how he treated his fellow coworkers and customers. He has trained, mentored and helped get jobs for more than a hundred of our current employees and customers. It’s hard to imagine Ozinga without my dad being a part of it day to day, but his passion for our company and his coworkers will never retire. His retirement plans include lots of travel, golf (he picked it up this year) and relaxation at his home in Florida. He has certainly earned it!

Doug came to Ozinga in 1994 after driving for Transit Mix out of Plymouth, IN. Doug and his wife Carol plan on traveling; however, his focus and passion will be with Turkey Tracks Hunt — An Eric Corey Foundation. COWORKERS Marty’s Vacation Challenge I have a challenge for all of you in 2020: Use all of your vacation time.

Many studies report that greater than 50% of Americans don’t use all of their vacation time. At Ozinga, approximately 74% of our coworkers used 100% of their vacation time in 2019. It may come as a surprise that more than 25% of you left vacation days unused, particularly since we have a use it or lose it policy. While we are doing better than average, I want to see this number climb in 2020.

Vacations are a great way to rest, rejuvenate, spend time with family, travel, etc. I find they are a great catalyst for creativity and renewed prioritization of what I want my life to count for. I always come back with a better attitude and lower levels of stress and anxiety. All of Ozinga’s owners are big advocates for using

all of your vacation time. We view vacations as an important way to fulfill our purpose to make a positive impact on individuals, their families and the community for generations. They provide the time you need to unwind and take care of yourself, create unforgettable family memories and recharge the batteries.

Many studies show vacations lead to higher productivity, satisfaction and fulfillment, once we are back to work.

As you look at the year ahead, please make sure you plan appropriately to use up all of your vacation days. This precious time is yours, and it’s important for you to make this a high priority for yourself and your loved ones. We will all benefit when you do.

It’s always fun to listen to John talk to AT&T support when we have issues. He used to work for AT&T support, and he’ll provide information to the support tech that no one else would even think to say. That gets them to do what he wants done because he knows what tricks they’re going to try to fix things.

COWORKERS Coworker Experience Survey We’re sure you’ve heard that Ozinga’s purpose is to make a positive impact on individuals, their families and the community for generations. The Coworker Experience Survey conducted in September and October is a way to measure Ozinga’s impact on coworkers—a way to gather data about what it’s like to work at Ozinga and how we impact each other.

The survey asks 13 questions developed by Gallup, the well-known survey company. One question is designed to simply measure a coworker’s overall satisfaction with Ozinga as a company. The other 12 questions are designed to measure the experience coworkers have in their local team. Each question is scored on a scale of one to five, with five being the best. The results are then compared with thousands of other companies worldwide that have conducted the survey and ranked as a percentile. The higher the score, the better the experience compared to the other companies. For example, if the score is in the 60th percentile, 40% of the companies scored better; if the score is in the 90th percentile, only 10% scored better.

So, how did Ozinga score? Here are the overall results: Average Overall Satisfaction 4.24 on a 5-point scale  61st Percentile (39% of the companies taking the survey scored better) Average Experience Score (Local Team) 3.87 on a 5-point scale  35th Percentile (65% of the companies taking the survey scored better)

Clearly, there is room for improvement. The exciting part is that we now have data from you that shows us some specific things we can work on to have a more positive impact on each other.

As we become more intentional about how we impact each other, our coworkers, we’ll have a more positive impact on our customers and the community.

Our most common injuries happen on or around our trucks: Climbing out of the cab, up and down ladders, carrying chutes or simply walking from one place to another – it really is the routine stuff we do multiple times every day.

Please pause for a second BEFORE you start moving and look for hazards like icy steps or uneven ground. Look out the window before you get out of the cab, examine the ground before you grab the chutes and use three points of contact when on ladders. This is especially important if you ever feel like you are rushing or in a hurry but also when you are doing the same old thing – don’t get complacent.

So, pause for a second, look for trouble and expect the unexpected.

TAYLOR EXCAVATING SOLUTION During a recent excavation job in Skokie, IL, Taylor Excavating and Wrecking Inc. had 175 loads of broken concrete that needed to be hauled off and 100 loads of aggregate delivered, but they weren’t able to crush the leftover concrete onsite. They needed a solution that was close by to keep travel times low and simplify repeat pickups.

Ozinga’s fixed recycling yard in Lincolnshire was less than 20 miles away. They saved valuable time by dropping off their concrete debris to be crushed and recycled, while picking up their needed aggregate all in the same place.

Virgin backfill wasn’t a necessity for Taylor’s Skokie job, so the recycled aggregate at the Lincolnshire location worked perfectly. However, Ozinga also produces a recycled crushed concrete made from 100% leftovers that is available at most locations.

This product is one of Taylor’s favorite as it is a “Taco Tier 1 Certified,” clean product that boasts a 95%+ compaction rating.

On the Skokie job in particular, working with Ozinga allowed them to stay organized, on time, and have quick access to the material and services they needed.

“Working with a supplier who spans logistics services, bulk material and concrete products allows us to order what we need for a particular job,” said Taylor President Tommy Taylor.

“Whether it be low-strength and flowable fill concretes or quality aggregates, having a partner that can provide solutions for various needs along a project’s lifecycle is huge. That’s why we partner with Ozinga.”

OZINGA AND KOMATSU JOIN FORCES Ozinga and Komatsu are working together to demo one of ten new Komatsu WA-475s in the United States. The unit will be at our Mokena ready mix facility for the next five months as part of a trial for real work applications.

All of the data and measurements will be used for the official unveiling at the Con/Agg Expo this year in Las Vegas. “Over the last few years Ozinga has built a very strong relationship with Komatsu and we were honored they asked us to test their machines,” said VP of Fleet Management Jeff Bonnema. “We hope the data we 10

collect will aid in making a better machine that will last.”
