STEVE I’ve always loved sales and business development with its inherent thrill of victory or sting of failure. Sales is a profession where we go to work knowing we’ll lose more often than we’ll win. I’m not going to lie—I prefer winning. However, I’ve also learned to appreciate the value of failure. I remember a development conversation with a younger coworker about a mistake they’d made. I told them the difference between me and them was that, due to my greater number of years in business, I’ve made thousands more mistakes than they had. But on the bright side, if they kept working, they’d have the opportunity to catch up. Wisdom comes partly from mistakes and failures throughout life. The most enduring lessons I’ve learned in business are not from the things I’ve done right, but from the things I’ve done wrong. Failure stings and teaches much more strongly—and I would argue more permanently—than victory. As we try new things, push boundaries, work to close sales opportunities, work to make things better or more efficient, we’ll make mistakes. My encouragement to each of us is not to let that stop us, but to make us better. Mistakes give us the opportunity to stop, think and adjust, then try again. So next time you make a mistake, celebrate the fact that you’ve just gained some additional wisdom! And with more wisdom, we can make an even greater positive impact on individuals, their families and the community for generations.

COWORKERS Indiana Drivers Succeed at IRMCA Competition Congratulations to Bruce Mitchell and Kelly Jenkins who finished 1st and 4th respectively at the 2019 IRMCA 11th Annual Mixer Truck Championship. Both coworkers are no stranger to the annual competition, but this year’s rodeo was different than years past due to the weather. While the pre-trip inspection and standard written exam still took place, there were only five driving obstacles instead of the usual ten. Bruce Mitchell will compete in the National Ready Mix Concrete Association Mixer Truck Competition in October in Kissimmee, FL. Good luck!

COWORKERS Building Our Future Ozinga’s purpose is to make a positive impact on individuals, their families and our community for generations. One of the biggest inhibitors of continued growth and the fulfillment of our purpose is a culture of entrenchment. To continue to live our purpose, we must move away from “how things have always been done” and focus instead on Building Our Future, pushing the boundaries of the construction industry, taking risks and making choices that leave a positive impact on our coworkers, customers and communities. Going forward, you’ll hear a lot about Building Our Future. It’s not an initiative or program; it’s a perpetual, intentional practice – with action required for each one of us, every day – to make business decisions aligned with our purpose. From developing people to expanding

our supply chain, everything we do and every interaction we have should leave a lasting impression on those we serve. The practices associated with Building Our Future are enduring, and new opportunities will arise as our company continues to grow. Some of the transformations aligned with Building Our Future already in the works include technology investments in Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems supporting critical sales and marketing efforts as well as back-end office functions, the establishment of a community ambassador program to help enable our coworkers to live our purpose in their community, and the rollout of a coworker experience survey for all of our coworkers. As these practices are implemented and new opportunities come to fruition, we will share as much information as possible with all our Ozinga coworkers. Together, we are Building Our Future, and our individual and collective decisions will make a lasting, positive impact on our coworkers, customers and community.

COWORKERS Paul Winkle Sr. Celebrates 55 Years with Ozinga Paul Winkle Sr. recently celebrated his 55th anniversary with Ozinga. One of the oldest living Ozinga coworkers, Paul’s career at Ozinga started in 1964 as a driver out of the Evergreen Park yard—Yard 1, as they called it. He drove a single axle truck that only held three yards of concrete, and over time, moved on to an International truck that held nine yards, then a semi ready mix truck. Throughout his career, Paul has driven every type of truck Ozinga has had, including bulk trucks and cement haulers. About 35 years ago, Paul moved into a sales position and has been successful at it ever since. Currently, he handles sales in Miami for the South Florida operation. When asked why he stays, Paul says, “I’m honored to be part of the Ozinga family and the way they grow; they’re always moving forward. There is no family like the Ozinga family and no company like the Ozinga company.”

Congratulations to Steve Fritts on His Retirement After 21 years as an Ozinga salesman with the Indiana West region, Steve Fritts has decided to retire. Friends, family and coworkers gathered together in June to celebrate Steve’s career with Ozinga. Steve joined the company in 1998 after Ozinga acquired his previous employer, Kouts Ready Mix. At Kouts, Steve was a driver for 22 years, delivering ready mix concrete to customers. A week before the acquisition was finalized, Ozinga’s Don Rapley, who was then head of the Indiana region, met with the Kouts Ready Mix drivers one-on-one to discuss their options post-acquisition. After chatting with Steve, Rapley offered him the sales representative position, and he never looked back. Congratulations, Steve!
Congratulations to Don Boeringa on His Retirement After nearly 32 years with Ozinga, Illinois South Driver Don Boeringa has decided to retire. During his time with us, Don—who is nicknamed Guru—worked in Chicago and Illinois South yards. Before joining Ozinga, Don served as a Crestwood police officer for six years. Don and his wife Bev are moving to Allendale, MI to be closer to their family. Good luck in the next chapter of your life, Don. You will be missed.
Calling all Ozinga retirees! We want to hear your stories! If you have something you’d like to share in the upcoming newsletter, email internalcomms@ozinga.com or contact Kristi Munno at 708.326.4582.

With people in the communities around us? You’ll soon be asked to participate in a Coworker Experience Survey. This confidential, short survey, designed by Gallup, will ask you about your experience and growth with Ozinga as an individual and as part of a team. It will be an opportunity to share what it’s like working here and how well you

OZINGA’S NEW REBUILD SHOP REFURBISHES CNG CONCRETE MIXER As part of Ozinga’s commitment to maintaining our fleet, we recently created a custom rebuild shop to give our used equipment a second life and keep maintenance costs down. For the shop’s most recent project, mechanics completely rebuilt a 2012 Kenworth W900 compressed natural gas concrete mixer truck. They replaced the mixer drum and rebuilt the drum drive, rebuilt and re-certified the engine, rebuilt the suspension and brakes, serviced the transmission, repaired all wiring components, replaced all the original lights with LEDs, and finished the job with a fresh coat of paint and new decals.
Miami Cement Adds Tankers and Drivers as South Florida Continues to Grow If you’re in the Miami area, you may notice Miami Cement trucks driving around town. This Ozinga company is part of our vertical integration in the South Florida marketplace. Miami Cement currently helps support our own cement needs, but our trucking and cement sourcing is also available for customers in the area. Recently, the company added two new tankers and drivers as Ozinga South Florida continues to expand. Investing in Miami Cement helps us have more control over product delivery to ensure we meet our customers’ needs.

Not All Cementitious Materials Are the Same When looking at various cementitious materials, it may be challenging to identify the difference between powders or their application. While most cement used in concrete production is Portland, a limestone and claybased product, supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) can also be used. During coal combustion, various by-products such as Fly Ash, Bottom Ash, Slag and Silica Fume are produced. These provide benefits to concrete, such as increased strength, minimized permeability and reduced heat generation. Additionally, incorporating these otherwise waste products into mix designs promotes sustainability and helps lower costs on raw materials. Check out our updated website to learn more.
MyOzinga Update MyOzinga recently received an update allowing customers to submit online order requests as well as chat directly with dispatch. This investment allows us to make a positive impact on our customers by providing real-time, dispatch-quality data for better customer service.

OML Makes Positive Impact During Heavy Rains Record-breaking rainfall this year has affected many families, businesses, and communities, especially those located on a major waterway. An estimated average of 30-50 inches of water has fallen across Illinois and surrounding states this year. All of this water has to go somewhere, and that somewhere is our river systems, which has brought water levels to unnavigable highs. The impact? A major supply chain traffic jam as rivers and locks are closed to barging and towing activity. Unfortunately, rain and high water levels don’t stop raw material and agricultural product purchases—it just makes it much harder for these products to be transported and delivered. However, Ozinga made a positive impact by providing services and solutions for our customers on the Illinois waterways. The Port of Henry and our other terminal locations provided space for fleeting and staging of barges as they waited for water levels to recede on the Mississippi.
PARKING LOT DESIGN ASSISTANCE PROGRAM BENEFITS CUSTOMERS Think you can’t afford concrete? Let us show you how! Ozinga recently launched a Parking Lot Design Assistance Program to help our customers better understand the benefits of concrete parking lots. This program also provides parking lot design recommendations and is intended for conventional concrete projects as well as projects using pervious, roller compacted or concrete overlays. All parking lot design assistance resources are available online and are being promoted through social media campaigns. 11
CUSTOMERS Crestwood Vision Becoming Reality The development project in Crestwood, IL continues to move along making way for economic growth along the Cal Sag Channel. Ozinga is continuing to provide the resources necessary to flip this once undeveloped brownfield site into a dynamic shopping and entertainment strip with a grocer, restaurants and public park. All the grading, processing, crushing and screening we have been doing is paying off for new development. A Chick-fil-A is the first building being constructed on the property, with more soon to follow. This project is a perfect example of how Ozinga holistically provides solutions from start to finish that make a positive impact on our customers and community.
Ozinga and JA&M Part of Large Beach Pour in South Florida Ozinga is committed to providing customers with quality service, so when JA&M asked Ozinga to partner with them on a 13-hour pour, there was no hesitation. Ozinga worked with JA&M to pour the foundation for a condo building being constructed in Hallandale Beach—and it was one of the largest concrete pours on the beach in the last decade. When finished in 2020, the 64-unit luxury facility will feature two swimming pools, smart home systems and breathtaking views of the ocean. Visit blog.ozinga.com/hallandale to see the video.

Ozinga Helps Educate First Responders About Alternative Fuel Vehicles Recently, Ozinga provided compressed natural gas (CNG) ready mix trucks during Green Ways 2Go’s Alternative Fuel Vehicles for First Responders training courses. During this course, first responders had the chance to view Ozinga’s CNG ready mix truck up close and see firsthand how these vehicles work. This allowed them to determine how best to immobilize the vehicles should they be involved in accidents or experience other damage. “The training we’ve received today is invaluable,” said Rich Savoia of the Roselle Fire Department. “From a professional standpoint, I think it will come in handy anytime we’re on the scene and encounter an alternative fuel vehicle.”

COMMUNITY Ozinga, Future Firm and Nike Grind Ozinga teamed with Future Firm, a Chicagobased architecture practice, to showcase how concrete can be used in art, architecture and building. Future Firm and Ozinga are testing how to implement Nike Grind into a concrete mixture. Nike Grind materials are created from Nike’s recycled surplus manufacturing materials and athletic footwear. “As architects, we’re so grateful to see a material company interested in both community engagement, education, and also exploration of artistic and aesthetic uses of concrete,” said Ann Lui and Craig Reschke from Future Firm. “It was also a fantastic experience for us to be able to connect our design practice with students across the city through this opportunity at Ozinga.”
