Transforming Hunger into Hope across southwest Missouri

A note from the Board President & CEO Thank you for standing with us. Last fiscal year, so many generous donors stepped up to support Ozarks Food Harvest. It was inspiring to see so many individuals, organizations, businesses and foundations do their part in Transforming Hunger into Hope by making donations, hosting fund and food drives and volunteering. Every gift of funds, food and time made a difference for someone experiencing hunger in the Ozarks. When COVID-19 hit in early 2020 and thousands of new faces lined up at food pantries and drive-through food distributions, even more donors generously offered their support. We witnessed our community coming together like never before to help their friends and neighbors persevere through the unexpected. Because of you, so many families that dealt with job loss, medical bills and an assortment of other challenges presented by the pandemic were able to gather around the table for nutritious meals during these unprecedented times. Your generosity helped many of them get back on their feet and reclaim hope for the future.

We accepted, processed, stored and distributed more food than ever before last fiscal year, and we provided more than 22 million meals across 28 counties in southwest Missouri. It’s truly incredible what we can do for the Ozarks when we work together. Ozarks Food Harvest’s ultimate goal is to close the meal gap in the Ozarks. Nearly 30 million meals are needed to make that happen, and we are well on our way to achieving that goal. Thank you for continuing to trust The Food Bank with your generous donations of funds, food and time. There are brighter days ahead for our neighbors, thanks to you.

“We may encounter many defeats, but we must not be defeated.” 1

- Maya Angelou

You are changing the lives of people like Brittany, a mother of an elementary school child in Springfield, who found help through a Mobile Food Pantry during the pandemic. “Every little bit can help. Thank you for making this possible,” she shared. Thank you again for contributing to The Food Bank. We look forward to partnering with you in the fight against hunger for many years to come.

Putting people first In the 28 counties we serve across the Ozarks, our hunger-relief partners helped provide people with the meals they needed last fiscal year—advancing our work toward ending hunger in southwest Missouri. We kept our focus on the children, families and seniors who needed help getting through challenges of all kinds. As COVID-19 drastically altered the lives, jobs and financial security of people in every community, we supported them by providing food to meet their needs.

In FY 2020, we were able to provide more than 22 million meals to families facing hunger in the Ozarks. That’s four times as many meals as we were providing upon moving into the O’Reilly Center for Hunger Relief in 2009. And within two years of the warehouse expansion of 2018, we increased our meal distribution by 5 million meals. Together, we can solve hunger in southwest Missouri. 22 M

In FY 2020, we distributed nearly 25 million pounds of food in southwest Missouri through our hunger-relief partners and a variety of programs, but we didn’t do it alone. Thanks to you, so many families found hope for the days ahead. We’re looking forward to fighting hunger with you in the years to come—and to ending hunger in the Ozarks for good.

weekend backpack program

“I would have nothing to eat without this. My favorite part is that people help us eat and we get food. It makes me feel awesome.”

One in five children in the Ozarks don’t know where their next meal will come from. This program provides kids with a bag of nutritious, child-friendly food to take home each weekend when they might otherwise go hungry. More than 1,600 children benefit from this program each year.

Ozarks Food Harvest’s response to COVID-19 March 1–June 30, 2020 The pandemic and its effects on the community pushed The Food Bank into high gear. Ozarks Food Harvest—and the 200 other Feeding America food banks across the country—were created for such times. We immediately mobilized our resources to ensure that anyone who needed help putting food on the table could receive groceries free of charge. During these final months of our fiscal year, Ozarks Food Harvest: • Hosted 38 Mobile Food Pantries that provided 315,000 meals • Distributed 8.58 million pounds to provide 7.15 million meals to hunger-relief organizations • Received 3954 hours of help from the Missouri National Guard, who helped provide 1,169,725 meals • Had 659 volunteer visits which helped provide 251,838 meals • Received $1.82 million in COVID-19 specific donations from foundations, businesses, organizations and generous individuals • Purchased an additional $1.04 million worth of food to ensure pantries didn’t struggle to keep shelves stocked • Was the largest COVID-19-related donor to charities in southwest Missouri Thank you for donating your time, funds and food to meet the increased need. You allowed The Food Bank to provide food and hope for so many during a challenging time.

Retail Pick-up program

Ozarks Food Harvest leads the way for Feeding America food banks when it comes to its Retail Pick-Up Program. We were one of the first food banks in the U.S. to establish a program of this kind, serving as a pilot food bank for Walmart. The program partners with retailers to rescue food that is no longer sellable, but does remain safe for consumption.

food & Fund drives

Businesses, organizations, churches and individuals host food and fund drives to help The Food Bank each year. Did you know that in FY 2020, 222 food and fund drives were hosted, collecting 57 tons of food?

“I think we all gain so much from giving ourselves to helping others. Volunteering provides a sense of purpose knowing that what we do helps others. Making a difference is a great feeling."

In FY20, Ozarks Food Harvest drivers and member agencies picked up 5,605,727 pounds of food from local retailers. Currently, 137 retailers participate in the program within The Food Bank’s 28-county service area. 46 34 13 9 8 5 4 4 3 3 2 1 1 1 1 1 1
