Outgoing Staff When did you f irst arrive at Oxley Christian College and what positions have you held throughout your tenure?

In late 1979, I did my final teaching rounds of my training at Oxley (known then as Life Christian Academy) and then remained for the final few weeks of that year to teach the infant class while the teacher took leave.

I returned in 1980 to briefly run a remedial English/reading programme and then soon became a classroom supervisor. The school at that time ran the LIFEPAC Curriculum and teachers were supervisors.

I went on to teach Year 1 for some years leaving in 1990 on maternity leave. I commenced Casual Relief Teaching (CRT) at Oxley in 1991. In 1992, I worked in the 3-year-old Kindergarten as assistant and then teacher. I continued work as a CRT with a focus on kindergarten and lower primary for many years. During

this period, I also filled in many positions throughout the school as need arose, having spent time working in the Links department, Resource Centre, Senior School Science, Administration Office and Home Economics.

In May 2007, I worked as the Art Assistant in the Senior Art department while also remaining the main CRT for Prep and Kindergarten. This continued for some years until the Kindergarten relocated to Oxley Kids and my focus over my

What is one of your f irst memories at Oxley?

I have clear memories of the school during its first year or two of operation and the very spartan circumstances that it operated in. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to watch it develop to what it is today.

Whatever you do, work at it with all of your heart, as working for the Lord and not for men. Colossians 3:23

What is one of your favourite memories at Oxley?

Tricky question, given the length of time that I have been associated with Oxley.

So, I will make a general response and say that I will take with me wonderful memories of having worked with lots of amazing people, both in students and staff, of having done many interesting and varied things and of having seen the grace and blessing of God exhibited in many ways.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of your time here?

Having had the opportunity to contribute to the development and education of students over many years, and to have been able to support the school on its journey to become what it is today.

Do you have a piece of advice to pass onto students?

Always be teachable, prepared to listen and learn, not just in school, but as you go through life.

When did you f irst arrive at Oxley Christian College and what positions have you held throughout your tenure?

I first arrived at Oxley in 1995. The position was to teach woodwind instruments for half a day a week. The role began as individual music lessons and over the years, encompassed a variety of different flute, clarinet and saxophone ensembles. I have loved working with these small groups. For a short time, I conducted the School Concert Band. In more recent years I have taught classes of woodwind instruments at Years 5 and 6, as well as Year 7.

What is one of your f irst memories at Oxley?

One of the first memories I have was the number of portable classrooms at the school. There were no designated music classrooms and no space for instrumental music lessons, so I spent several years teaching clarinet, saxophone and flute in the parents’ room and the crèche room of LMC. An

instrumental music teaching area was then developed, comprising of a setup of small teaching rooms in what had been the old staff room. At this time a much greater sense of camaraderie developed amongst the Music staff. A Music Secretary was employed to help organise the many school and student timetabling issues, to structure accounts and generally bring cohesion to the program. Our program was beginning to grow.

What is one of your favourite memories at Oxley?

Working one-on-one with students has always been a treasured part of my role.

I have felt privileged to have been able to get to know students individually and to teach them over several years. One of the most rewarding aspects has been watching the student’s musical development. What begins as insecure, tentative music performance becomes transformed into confident, flowing performances with a depth of musical understanding.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of your time here?

In 2011, the Music Faculty was blessed with wonderful Broadley Performing Arts Centre. Oxley’s new music facilities were a standout. Our teaching conditions went up a notch and we now had a beautiful venue for our many concerts and soirée performances. These have been an incredibly rewarding part of my role.

Throughout my time at Oxley, I have been part-time, spreading my working week between different schools. This school has always been a supportive, steady, and peaceful place to teach. Other schools have come and gone in that time, but I have remained here for 30 years!

Do you have a piece of advice to pass onto students?

The greatest piece of advice I have to offer students is to enjoy making music.

What is music if it is accurate but has no life? Music is to be enjoyed! It is a gift from God that lifts the spirit and transcends the ordinary.

When did you f irst arrive at Oxley Christian College and what positions have you held throughout your tenure?

I began teaching at Oxley in April 2010. I started as a replacement English teacher before an ongoing role became available. Two years later I was given the opportunity to teach Senior Music and have done that ever since. I have also been a Year 9 Home Group teacher, taken Sport, and for a semester taught Christian Studies.

What is one of your f irst memories at Oxley?

An early memory of Oxley was the beautifully maintained campus. Soon after arriving I experienced my first Open Day. To walk around on a brilliant autumn day was especially memorable. I can still hear and see a Barbershop Quartet singing right alongside flowers in full bloom. Quite a sight and I was more than impressed.

Sometimes I have questioned whether I am in the right place and doing the right things – including in teaching. Proverbs 3:5-6 has always helped: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your

What is one of your favourite memories at Oxley?

A favourite memory at Oxley is the Year 12 Final Day. It is a genuine celebration for the whole community. To see the entire school – Junior, Middle and Senior – as well as staff, embrace humour, fun, and mutual respect while honouring the Year 12s is an extraordinary tribute to Oxley’s culture.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of your time here?

There have been many rewarding aspects of being at Oxley. The well-behaved and courteous students have allowed me to focus on teaching my subject. I have also been fortunate to have such gifted and dedicated colleagues in the Broadley Performing Arts Centre. Most of all, it has been rewarding to work in an environment that honours God and seeks to uphold Christian ideals and standards.

Do you have a piece of advice to pass onto students?

My advice to students, at least academically, is to make every school year count.

Much of the heavy lifting of study seems to be done during VCE, particularly Year 12. Students are at school for 13 years in total, and there is a wonderful opportunity to take advantage of opportunities, and master skills, well before the VCE years.

When did you f irst arrive at Oxley Christian College and what positions have you held throughout your tenure?

I started at Oxley in 2011 and shared a fun Year 8 Office with Mr Ric Gaschk, Mr Andew Piper and Miss Claire Hogan amongst others. In my time at Oxley, I have taught Year 7-10 Humanities (mostly Geography); taught online during lockdown; and for number of years, VCE Geography. I have previously been Year 11 Coordinator and in the last three years, Careers Coordinator.

What is one of your f irst memories at Oxley?

One of my first memories is attending Year 9 Camp. Hiking, bike riding and kayaking with Year 9s was very memorable, along with the pouring rain!

Year 12 Final Day costumes, the concert, and the Year 11 vs 12 basketball game is always such a great school community event each year. I was also privileged to travel with Year 11 students to Cambodia on a school Samaritan’s Purse Trip.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of your time here?

The students, particularly working with and supporting them to achieve their goals, and to see them go confidently in future studies and work.

Do you have a piece of advice to pass onto students?

Get involved! There are so many opportunities coming your way, so be courageous and give it a go!

I arrived at Oxley in 2011 as the Gifted and Talented (GATE) Coordinator and taught Commerce and Maths.

Throughout my 14 years at Oxley, I have supported the College in various other capacities, including VCE Coordinator, Head of Commerce, Scholarships Coordinator and Links (Learning Enhancement) Coordinator (acting).

What is one of your f irst memories at Oxley?

My first day of work in Oxley. It was a curriculum day (no students), and the extended staff morning worship just blew me away. I was so glad to be able to work in a Christian school amongst Christian brothers and sisters in Christ, as I am till this day.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of your time here?

The opportunity to show God’s love every day to the people around me, and for that to be demonstrated everyday by the same people.

Do you have a piece of advice to pass onto students?

One of my favourite bible verses is from Colossians.

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Colossians 3:2 Sometimes, school life to students can seem all-consuming and it is difficult to see the forest for the trees. An underlying philosophy that I embrace to gain some perspective in life (for example, when problems seem larger than they need to be), is to set my mind on things above and look towards eternity.

I stay in the present to do my best for things that I can control (such as offering support to students, families and staff), and I look to eternity for things I cannot control (of which there are many).

Similarly, I would like to encourage students to do their absolute best for things within their control, and to actively seek support and help for things they cannot control. There are many wonderful staff here to support you in your growth!

As I sit and reflect on the 2024 academic year in our Junior School, I am deeply struck by how this year has unfolded as a vibrant mosaic of enriching experiences, formative challenges, and significant accomplishments for our students. Each day was filled with moments that encouraged exploration, ignited creativity, and nurtured curiosity. From lessons in the classroom to discoveries in the playground, our students embarked on a journey of transformation, where the pursuit of knowledge became an exciting adventure.

Buddy Program Teanau Newton

Buddy Program Coordinators The Better Buddies Program continues to thrive across our Junior School, engaging students from Kindergarten to Year 6 in meaningful friendship-building activities. In 2024, a variety of exciting events showcased our commitment to fostering strong bonds among students.

All students brought their special teddy bears to the Teddy Bears' Picnic, enjoying a delightful lunch with their buddies. This joyful gathering allowed everyone to connect over shared stories and laughter, creating lasting memories. In a bid to deepen our understanding of one another, we introduced a Buddy Information Page in our school portfolios. Each student documented their buddy’s interests and took a photo together, ensuring these new friendships are captured and cherished.

The Paper Aeroplane Challenge soared to new heights of fun! Students crafted their aeroplanes and competed to see whose could fly the furthest. It was a joyous experience that encouraged teamwork and creativity, with the champions of each buddy class earning a victorious treat—what a way to celebrate our flying success!

Our celebration of RSPCA Cupcake Day brought out the culinary talents of our students. The impressive cupcake creations were nothing short of outstanding! Buddies enjoyed and admired each other’s deliciously decorated treats and raised awareness for animals in shelters.

Buddy Program

The Buddy Chapel event helped us level up our friendships through mini challenges that pitted teacher buddies against student buddies. This collaborative effort promoted unity and support amongst all. Finally, during our Buddy Reflection session, students expressed their love for the program and their desire to spend even more time with their buddies. The enthusiasm and camaraderie displayed this year have truly reinforced the spirit of the Better Buddies Program, making it an invaluable part of our school community.

Prep Nativity Written by our first Prep teacher at Oxley, Mrs Joyce Simpson, the Prep Nativity is one of the most anticipated events of the school year. The Nativity tells the story of when God sent to earth the most special gift of His son Jesus Christ! It was truly heartwarming to see our Prep students take to the stage on Wednesday 27 November for the annual Prep Nativity.

In keeping with a cherished Oxley tradition, the Preps confidently shared the story of our precious Lord and Saviour’s birth through song and narration. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Prep students and their teachers for the dedication and effort invested in presenting the timeless message of Jesus to our community.

Year 1

Janine Boer, Caitlin Bonte Year 1 Teachers My God is so Big , So Strong and so Mighty, there is nothing He cannot do, a favourite line from one of the Year 1s frequently sung Worship songs.

This line conveys how much we are in awe of God’s provision for us this year.

A significant event in being a Year 1 student is to move beyond the yellow line! We ventured to the world of the Year 1 and 2 playground, creating many special memories as we navigated the high-flying fox, the funnel slide, and one of our favourites, playing chasing over the playground with our friends. The extra-large sand pit made way for treasure hunt games and building.

In the classroom a major aspect of learning in Year 1 is to use a ruler and a red pencil to rule up our pages, to add a title, and put the date at the top.

Some exciting and special activities just relevant to Year 1 were, interviewing our Grandparents about the past. In the new subject area of Science, we learnt to conduct an experiment, and when attending the Barn, we learnt how to weed and plant seedlings. Lastly, Year 1s immersed themselves into the 19th Century by dressing in appropriate attire when we visited the Mont De Lancey Heritage Centre to learn how children lived and played in the past.

Year 1 Student Highlights A big highlight for Agatha Sarte (1CB) was using the Mathletics program on the surface pros.

A special part of the Literacy Fuel program for Joanna Wang (1CB) was creating the Dr Seuss rhyming book with her group.

A momentous moment for Riley White (1CB) was getting my first background as a reward on essential assessment.

Jacob Huang (1CB) was intrigued by the mathematical concept of measurement, especially as he got to use the balance scales to confirm his predictions when measuring the weights of common objects.

An extraordinary element of Mavie Press' (1JB) learning was investigating all the different spellings sounds and the completing the activities, such as looking up words in the dictionary.

Levi McInnes (1JB) was excited to adventure out into the Year 1 and 2 playground with the monkey bars being his favourite activity.

Henry Biak and Eliana Bond (1JB) especially enjoyed mathematics classes because it allowed for creativity, brain stretching and enjoyable activities.

Charlotte Ashmore (1JB) was a super fan of school Big Writes because I like using my imagination to write fabulous stories.

A highlight for Rumi Shirvanian (1JB) was weekly PE lessons and learning how to kick a soccer ball.

Junior School Enviro Teacher In 2024, our Junior School embraced the DigiTech curriculum, empowering students to develop creative problem-solving skills through coding, robotics, and integrated digital tools. This approach fostered confidence and deep understanding, preparing students to meet future challenges with innovative solutions. The program also focuses on digital safety and wellbeing.

Year 4 The mBot is an awesome simple robot with multiple features. Year 4 students have found that it can be programmed to sing, display light sequences and sense colours.

Year 6 Year 6 students continued their experience with drones exploring how to move in various three dimensional patterns. They finished off the year by using Tinkercad to design a 3D object to print out a gift for their buddy on the 3D printer.

Arielle Drew, Riley Moran Year 3 Teachers This year, Year 3 have adored seizing new opportunities. Our Forces & Functions Fest encouraged students to think like engineers as they whizzed toy cars down ramps of different materials and tested the elasticity of various items. Students were responsible and diligent shop keepers while handling money and supporting our beloved Junior School to purchase items at the Father’s Day Stall. Furthermore, students experienced their very first Market Day as stall holders, creatively preparing the service or product that would engage their customer.

Finally, the Year 3 Sleepover was a memorable day of interacting with marine animals, busting epic moves during our silent disco and imagining what kind of environment our pet crab may live in. Mrs Drew and Mr Moran are immensely proud of how students have risen to new heights this year (both personally and in actual height!) and know that they are well and truly ready for Year 4.

Junior Sport Tim Ashmore & Carolyn Connelly Junior School PE Teachers What a rich year of Sport and Physical Education our Primary School students have enjoyed throughout 2024! As they engaged in a range of both competitive sports and activities focused on skill development, Oxley students were presented with the opportunity to develop a plethora of aptitudes that will equip them for life. From building resilience when they lose, to developing humility when they win, these experiences served to build the character of our students.

This scripture has been foundational to our Sport and Physical Education program this year. As students participated in the numerous House competitions, Interschool Sport at the various levels of achievement, and each Physical Education lesson, students have been challenged to do their own personal best. They have learnt to celebrate the success of others, encourage those who are less confident, and in so doing, serve the God who blesses every individual with unique gifts and talents.

In competing in several House competitions and Interschool contests, our students’ passion for competition was stoked. They engaged in good spirit, cheering on their teams with gusto as they came up with creative chants and displayed commendable sportsmanship.

Our House Competition was a nail biter this year, going right down to the wire. Gibeon Warriors (Red House) were the victors, finishing just 3.5 points ahead of Tabor Trojans (White House)!

Naomi Driessen, Rebecca McDonald Year 5 Teachers Year 5 is a year of personal growth – spiritually, academically and socially. In developing these skills and looking at examples of great leaders from their lives and the Bible, students have grown as leaders. Isaiah 41:10 says, Fear not, for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God, I will strengthen you, I will help you, and I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Knowing this to be true and taking their knowledge with them, Year 5 students are now ready to take on the challenge of being Junior School leaders in Year 6. We could not be prouder of all the Year 5 students, and we know they are ready for the experiences waiting for them in the future.

Congratulations, Blue House! For Athletics day, there were a lot of incredible track and field events. White House won that day. During Basketball Day, we all fought fiercely and gave it our all! Red House pulled out an outstanding win!

“WOOSH!” The frisbee flew through the air, splattering on the floor like a pancake – with a mob of students rushing towards it. The ultimate frisbee competition was an awesome event to keep ourselves active, healthy, and engaged during Term 3. It was also a great opportunity to score the games, as it taught us responsibility and enhanced our experience in sport.

– Vantha Par Sung (6G) The eSafety incursions taught us to be safe and responsible in a fun and engaging way. Do not worry, it was not boring!

In Wise Guys, we learnt about things such as puberty, characteristics, friends, and anxiety. It was amazing to explore these topics with the guidance of Mrs Bradshaw and Mr Ashmore!

Resource Centre Kate Broadley

Resource Centre Manager The Resource Centre has been a hive of activity this year and a central hub for students to gather from Junior and Senior School.

Each school day starts with Senior students cramming in some last-minute study from 8.00am. Junior Library classes fill one end of the Resource Centre with productive chatter as they listen to lively stories narrated by the effervescent often-in-costume Mrs Pina Sernio. Students learnt about the creative writing process, the Dewey system, how to research and find credible sources, the depths of the fiction and nonfiction collections, God’s wonderful creation, and so much more. During recess and lunchtime, students relax in bean bag chairs, play chess or cards, make amazing creations from scrap paper, or find a little nook to read. Our brilliant Library Technician, Ms Anita Little, is always on hand to find an elusive text or assist with resources. All of this takes place in a decorative, warm space with plenty of dynamic displays, including student work and the latest award-winning books.

There has been much to celebrate throughout 2024, with Library Lovers’ Day in February, where students made origami hearts and wrote on a communal board about what they loved in the library. National Simultaneous Storytime was shared with an online reading of Aura Parker’s Bowerbird Blues, a story of a bowerbird searching for blue on the surface and a soulmate deep within.

In Term 3, we were treated to a visit by Sue deGennaro, an award-winning author and illustrator who inspired Junior students with her whimsical drawings and lyrical stories.

Each student became an artist as Sue taught us how to create movement and quirky characters in sketches. Book Week Chapel followed soon after, with the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) winners announced by the English Faculty Captain, Teannah Ross.

Throughout the year, Book Chat has run for Years 4, 5 and 6. Each term, students select a book from a set of novels, reading and exploring them, before sharing in small groups about their reading discoveries, growth points and evaluating the merits of the text. A parent or teacher guides each group discussion. This wonderful program continues to engage students by fostering a love of reading and literature. We are incredibly grateful to the parents who support this program by encouraging their child to read at home, and for those parents and guardians who have run Book Chat groups in the Resource Centre—thank you!

One of the most heartening aspects of this year has been the sense of community that has blossomed. Events like our Wellbeing Week brought everyone together to celebrate our commitment to wellbeing, mental health support and friendship. Students engaged in activities that promoted help-seeking, mental health education, and community building. The energy, joy and camaraderie were evident across the College, reminding us that we are stronger together. A particular highlight of the week was the staff versus students Battle of the Bands as well as the annual Wellbeing Art Competition.

RUOK? Day was an essential reminder of the value of mental health and checking in on others around you.

We learned that it’s okay not to be OK and that by simply asking, 'Are you okay?' we can make a big difference to someone’s day. In the morning, we were greeted with warm hot chocolates prepared by the teachers and a doughnut distributed at recess.

From Saturday 13 to Monday 22 January 2024, a team of 11 students, including Pastor Matt, Mrs Woodcock, Mrs McDonald and I, had the opportunity to travel to Cambodia on a mission trip with Samaritan’s Purse. This trip can only be described as an experience of a lifetime, that has left us with not only a greater appreciation for what we have, but also a different perspective of the world, along with so many unforgettable memories.

From the beginning of the trip, we were warmly welcomed into Cambodia and made to feel appreciated. Getting to know the Samaritan’s Purse staff, along with local Cambodians by attending daily devotions was a privilege.

Particularly, a party we attended for all Samaritan’s Purse staff from multiple regions was an incredible experience.

Although not many people knew one another, everyone’s willingness to interact, led to a night full of games, dancing, and laughter. It was heart-warming to see so many people unified through their love and desire to help

Cambodia, the bus rides quickly became an enjoyable part of our days. Although not sounding too fun at first, these trips enabled us to bond as a group and share our experiences. Not only that, but they consisted of many competitive card games, spilled Hydrolyte, a chaotic marshmallow game, and singing at the top of our lungs at night with a disco ball. Throughout the course of the trip, alongside many insightful moments, came the entertaining ones.

Daring one another to eat not only ants but crickets, snakes and spiders was such an amusing experience that left many regretting their decisions! It was such a blessing to be a part of this trip. The time we spent in Cambodia cannot be exchanged for anything, as it has left a lasting impact on all our lives. Although leaving was bittersweet, we did so with a full heart, open eyes, and a brain full of new knowledge and unforgettable memories!

Alumni

Aaron Chan, Grace Freeman Past Students' Association OCC Alumni & Orchestra Over the years, our College has been blessed with a myriad of staff and students with God-given talents of music.

Our first Concert Band began in 1995, followed by our first Strings Orchestra in 2003. With the addition of the wonderful facilities of the Broadley Performing Arts Centre in 2011, our Performing Arts program continues to expand and create musical moments that bring joy to the Oxley community. We now have 19 ensembles across the Junior, Middle and Senior School, a very successful Year 2 Strings program and Year 5–7 Instrumental program, with many concerts and events throughout the year.

As students graduate and explore life beyond school and study, many things are often left behind: good memories, relationships, routines, and the practice of sports and music. It becomes difficult to continue the things we enjoy, with the lack of purpose or goal, or the right people to pursue these things with.

With the support of the College and Life Ministry Church, the OCC Alumni & Staff Orchestra was established this year for past students and staff to make music. We began rehearsals in February, and presented our wonderful Inaugural Concert on Thursday 5 September, with close to 200 past and current students, staff, family members and friends of our community in the audience. It was an exciting evening of entertainment, and a great privilege for everyone to be a part of this monumental event.

With the first year of this journey concluded, we look forward to a bright future for the Orchestra, welcoming new members to join the team, and maintaining a strong connection within the Oxley community.

This year marks the close of an 11-year journey for the four Spratts at Oxley, beginning in 2014 when my brother and I entered the Senior School. The College welcomed a shy young girl, pushing me academically and nurturing me spiritually. We are profoundly grateful to Oxley for its pivotal role in our lives.

After graduating in 2017, I pursued a Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine at Monash University. After rotating across Melbourne and Gippsland I completed my studies in 2022. I have since been practising as a doctor at Austin Health, while simultaneously conducting research focused on women’s health and palliative care medicine.

Oxley instilled the value of learning and community. A group of us continue to gather for a monthly book club inspired by our English and Texts & Traditions teachers, and many of us have rekindled our musical interests, bringing our instruments out of retirement for the Alumni Orchestra. Above all, our teachers were genuinely caring, and committed. They exemplify what it means to love one’s neighbour, showing us that everyone can do this in their unique way. As my family takes leave of Oxley, Christ’s words echo, Go and do likewise.

At the forefront of our student leadership were our exceptional College Captains, Max Broadley-Thomson and Mary Spratt, supported by Vice Captains Ruan Rademeyer and Daniella Hupertz. Together with Year 12 Coordinator, Miss Claire Hogan, they created a warm and supportive environment throughout the Senior School.

Their leadership was marked by humility, integrity, and a desire to serve, inspiring the whole community. Indeed, their efforts to nurture unity and inclusiveness will have a lasting impact on the College for many years to come. Applying themselves to their studies and actively contributing whenever and wherever they were called, each Year 12 student was able and willing to do their part.

While our Year 12 students will be deeply missed, we wish them every success as they embark on the next exciting chapters of their lives.

As the Year 11 students prepare to assume leadership responsibilities in 2025, they have been well-prepared by Mr Ryan Van Gaalen. Their journey through Senior School has been one of perseverance through preparation. They have faced the challenges of Year 11 with determination and understanding. They have worked hard, persevered, and matured in their penultimate year and are ready to tackle whatever Year 12 may bring. Now, as they look forward to the privileges of Year 12, including inheriting the Year 12 Common Room and the leadership mantle, they are ready to take on the challenges of their final year.

For the Year 10 students, 2024 has been a year of discovery and preparation for the future. Under the guidance of Mrs Nicole Bell, students took part in the 2024 Work Experience program and Mrs Linda Doblin saw the return of Oxley’s participation in the Morrisby Profile, which gave our Year 10s countless valuable insights into potential career paths. Students also enjoyed the much-anticipated Aqua Camp, which, as in previous years, has proven to be one of the most memorable highlights. Throughout the year, the students learned the importance of planning and personal application. Their careful academic and personal preparation, has set them on a path for success as they move into their final years as VCE students.

Year 9 students, under the leadership of Mr Stephen White, took on new responsibilities as the most senior students in the Middle School. Their participation in programs such as City Cite, the Year 9 Election Program, and the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child program gave them a real understanding of servant leadership.

They learned that to lead is to serve, and that making a difference in the community often requires selflessness and collaboration. This year was a time for them to develop a strong sense of identity and responsibility, preparing them for the challenges of Senior School.

For the Year 8 students, 2024 was marked by adventure and growth. With the guidance of Mr Joshua Gaschk, who completed his first year as Year 8 Coordinator, students embraced the challenges of the Snow Camp and the Duke of Edinburgh program. These experiences, while physically demanding, helped them to grow in resilience and teamwork, building a solid foundation for their future years in Senior School.

The Year 7 students also found their place in the Senior School under the leadership of Mrs Vinita Seago. Their first year in secondary school was filled with excitement, discovery, and new friendships. They have quickly become valued members of the school community, and their sense of enthusiasm and joy has set a positive tone for the future. Year 7s participated in the Launchpad program, contributing to the creation of a chapter of a book. Their contributions will make a welcome addition to the Resource Centre’s library.

This year, Oxley also excelled beyond the immediate College community. Our Gifted and Talented student team achieved second place in the prestigious 2024 Da Vinci Competition, proving that hard work and dedication (and a healthy helping of stellar grey matter) bears fruit. Similarly, the College’s production of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory earned multiple Lyrebird nominations, with a special highlight being the cast’s invitation to perform for patients at Monash Children’s Hospital.

In addition, Oxley renewed its association with Yarra Ranges Tech School, offering students numerous STEMbased excursions. The College looks forward to expanding its STEM program with new subjects and a state-of-the-art STEM room in 2025, a testament to the College's commitment to fostering innovation and creativity.

As we close the chapter of 2024 and look ahead, we are reminded that every season of life has its purpose. This year has been a time of growth, hard work, and joy, and as our students continue their journeys, we trust that the lessons they have learned will serve them well in the years to come. We eagerly anticipate the new opportunities and adventures that await in the next chapter of the Senior School in 2025.

Head of Senior School Visual Arts It has been another fantastic year for Oxley Visual Arts. We are truly grateful for our student’s immense talents and are thankful for all of their hard work. Witnessing God’s presence in the creativity, passion, and dedication of our students has been a profound privilege and speaks volumes about the vibrant culture of our college.

In 2024 students were afforded opportunities to work with a wide variety of materials and techniques, learn valuable theoretical content, and develop as artists and designers in their own right.

Senior Years Not to be outdone, our Senior students made and designed some truly exceptional work. Year 10 Art featured the exploration the subject of Hands in multiple mediums including sculpture and paint, while our Year 10 VCD students explored different design fields, designing logos and clothing labels. The Year 11 Art class worked collaboratively to produce their own exhibition on the theme of memories called Reminiscence, and our Year 11 VCD students produced slick branding as a form of communication design. Lastly, Year 12 students produced truly outstanding folios of work, from deeply personal large-scale paintings in Art Creative Practice, to professional-grade building and environmental designs in Visual Communication and Design.

Year 7 Vinita Seago

Year 7 Coordinator It has been a blessing to witness this cohort of spirited Year 7 students develop responsibility and determination. With courage and resilience, each embraced their individuality while tackling academic challenges, and active participation in music and sporting events during a time of incredible growth and discovery. They have each shown tremendous progress, and their increasing adaptability and evolving maturity are a testament to their potential.

Students excelled in camp, musical performances, excursions, and sporting events. These memorable experiences have provided opportunities for learning and overall development.

Our camp at Anglesea was more than just an adventure; it was an opportunity to form deeper connections with newfound friendships, and create lasting memories. After many team-building activities and late-night chats, we returned from camp with a strong sense of belonging and taking back with us Pastor Matt’s words of “We are family”.

Year 7

We were challenged to improve our study habits, manage our time more efficiently, live a balanced life, and approach tests with great confidence.

The Year 7 Home Group competition featured a variety of competitions that we had to take part in to earn points for our class. It was a very close competition, but 7.2 won overall. Despite the rivalry between Home Groups, it was an excellent opportunity to grow closer as a cohort and get to know each other better.

The Amari Lap-a-thon was a big event held on the oval, where anyone in the College could run as many laps as they could to raise money for Amari. Everyone was drained after the run, but there were still smiles, knowing we all did this for a good cause.

In Science, we learned about classification and ecosystems.

Part of our project was to venture to the Melbourne Zoo to collect information about the animals we were studying for our assignment. It was fun day full of learning, hanging out with our friends, viewing animals and taking extensive research notes.

Looking back, we couldn’t have made it through the year without our friends, and supporting each other as a united cohort. We laughed, cried, and supported one another all the way. This year wouldn’t have been as special or memorable without every one of us. A big thank you goes to our incredible teachers, who guided and mentored us every step of the way. We are so grateful for your support and encouragement.

Mia Frazer & Lincoln Johnston (7.2) Although adjusting to a new environment has been complex and challenging, Year 7 has been the best. The year included numerous special activities that students loved, including camp, multiple excursions, inter-school sport, and most importantly, a chance to socialise with new classmates. My highlight for this year has been camp.

Going to Anglesea for four days has helped me get used to the people around me. And who could forget going bodyboarding? That was the best! This year has been full of adventure and fun.

It has been pleasing to witness students’ persistence as they faced new challenges. Students were pushed outside their comfort zones in class, when serving our school and community, leading Home Group devotions, or Year 8 Chapel, and, of course, at our extraordinary Snow Camp.

Year 8 was a chaotic, fun-filled year. It was a time of development, but particularly in friendships and knowledge. The new connections we made with peers are what made Year 8 so memorable and enjoyable.

Their time and effort to take care of us made it an unforgettable experience. Through many sleepless nights, laughter and long bus drives, this camp was a thrilling experience that I got to enjoy with teachers and friends.

Year 9 Coordinator Year 9 is a vital year of growth and transition as students prepare to graduate from Middle Years to Senior School and ultimately towards the VCE and other pathways.

At the beginning of the year, we discussed the concept of adolescence. This term comes from the Latin adolescere, meaning to grow up. This year has certainly been full of opportunities for students to develop their maturity in many ways.

Together, we have focused on getting the little things right.

Punctuality, uniform, homework, listening carefully, kind words – these may seem like little things in isolation, but if we can get them all right, they can contribute to a great year.

Election Program This year was a blast with so many fun things to do but one of my favourite parts of the year was the Election Program. In this program we were able to learn about politics and become a political party ourselves. We decorated our classroom, brought in food, made logos, websites, videos and posters to convince people to vote for us. We had Nicole Werner MP come and talk to us about how politics works. By the end of the program, we had to convince Year 6s, teachers and our own classmates to vote for us. This was such a highlight of Year 9.

Adventure Camp As a Duke Of Edinburgh girl, this camp may not necessarily be the most relaxing and charming experience, but it was a great opportunity to develop more life skills and extend yourself beyond school and academics. On the first day and the morning of the second day our group hiked along Lightning Ridge. When I think about it now, it is more about the satisfaction and delightfulness of completing the course, but at the time, it

In the EISM Division 2 Swimming, our Boys Swimming Team was announced the winners in the Boys category.

This was due to great individual performances from Une Geisler (12.10), Henry Zhao (10.4), Sanaa Geisler (9.11) and Tom Weighell (9.9).

Our Swimming Captain, Une Geisler (12.10), was the stand-out at this event breaking two EISM records in the Open Boys 50m Backstroke (from 27.89 to 27.36) and his own Open Boys 50m Breaststroke record from 30.79 to 30.10. Une was the only swimmer at the event to break an EISM record. Lucy Weighell (10.1) stood out for the girls by winning the U/16 Girls 50m Freestyle, the U/16 Girls 50m Backstroke, second in the Girls 50m Butterfly and third in the Open Girls 100m Freestyle.

House Carnivals The House Competition to determine the overall winner for 2024 was very close this year with Gibeon Warriors (Red House) taking home the Swimming trophy with a lead of 38 points over Tabor Trojans (White House) and Zion Crusader (Blue House) who both finished second on 990 points. After a close victory in the swimming two weeks before, Gibeon Warriors (Red House) came back strong in the Athletics to win the day with 1,927 points, 205 points ahead for their closest rival Zion Crusaders (Blue House).

New Record Holders in 2024 Congratulations to Une Geisler (12.10) on breaking two new records in the Open Boys division. Une broke the Open Boys 50m Freestyle record that stood till 2015 from 27:07 to 26:06 and the Individual Medley Record from 2015 from 2:33:96 to 2:20:03. Une now holds every individual swimming record for Open Boys at Oxley.

Moving into the Senior building and joining the Senior Years cohort gives students a new feeling of maturity, which is further enhanced by opportunities to take on leadership roles and for some, to start their VCE journey as a fast tracking student.

The vision for a Classical and Christian Education has a rich philosophy and tradition. At its core, this model understands education as something deeply connected to the human heart, to its affections and desires. It is about shaping the soul, guiding students to love what is true, good, and beautiful in the world, to think God’s thoughts after Him. It is through this lens that the role of the teacher takes on the immense responsibility of a master - apprentice relationship with students.

A teacher, it is said, is either a witness or a stranger. A Christian teacher is called to be an authentic witness to the gospel of Christ, embodying the truth she teaches. The curriculum, in this sense, resides within the teacher. She is not just conveying knowledge but living out the virtues and skills that allow her to rightly love her students and the learning disciplines.

She has been shaped by the great books and timeless ideas that fuel her passion for teaching.

To guide students on the path of Christ and through the disciplines of learning—those gardens of delight that reveal God’s order and beauty—the teacher must have walked those paths herself. Immersing students in Scripture requires that she, too, is immersed in Scripture. In moments of reflection, when asking, "Do I stand for what I teach? Do I believe in what I say?" the answer must always be an unwavering yes. The personality and faith of the teacher become the living text that students will always remember.

A Christian teacher reads deeply and with charity, and reasons with both rigor and grace.

She speaks and writes with humble eloquence, blending wisdom with clarity. Having mastered her subject matter, she organizes her classroom to cultivate both learning and a sense of shalom, where each student is invited to engage thoughtfully with subject skills, the great questions and learning that have occupied human minds for centuries.

In this space, students are encouraged to explore the liberal arts, not simply as an academic exercise, but out of a deep affection for the pursuit of truth and beauty. This provides the cornerstones for what it means to be fully human and truly free.

The liberal arts open our eyes to the wonder of God’s creation, awakening curiosity and the desire to participate more fully in it. In this, students naturally imitate their teachers.

At the heart of Christian Education is the concept of human formation that involves every aspect of our being; the spiritual, intellectual, physical, psychological, and cultural dimensions. These components are integrated, contributing to the development of the whole person. Spiritual formation, specifically, is the ongoing work of God, shaping the believer’s life and character to reflect that of Christ, through the power of the Spirit and within the context of Christian community. This formation, in all its facets, is a process of maturity, and flourishing. It is a journey lived out in community, for the sake of community, as we become more fully the Body of Christ.

In this model of education, the teacher is not merely an instructor; she is a guide, a mentor, and a witness to truth. Her life of faith and learning serves as the blueprint for her students, shaping the mind and soul, guiding them toward a life that reflects transcendent realities.
