WHAT’S ON GUIDE MARCH - AUGUST 2018
SUM MER 2018
Welcome to Oxford Playhouse... Happy Birthday to us! Birthdays always invite reflection, and this year sees two pretty important anniversaries. Firstly there’s the national celebration of 100 Years of Votes for Women, which we are marking throughout the year in numerous ways with the intention of furthering debate about representation and democracy now. Just how universal is universal suffrage in the 21st century, and what barriers to equality and justice remain? Theatre, and the arts more widely, enables us to ask such difficult questions, year in year out. Meanwhile, the Playhouse celebrates its 80th birthday this autumn, including a stellar gala on Sunday 21 October. Watch out in early summer for the announcement of talents joining us. It’s going to be an unforgettable night. Planning our anniversary year has required us to consider the achievements of the Playhouse over the last 80 years, and what we want to achieve in the decades to come. Despite the extraordinary advances in technology and changes in society, we still sit together in the dark to enjoy great storytelling and share ideas. Our 80th season will include world-class theatre from well-known names and familiar faces, and a commitment to nurture the theatre artists of the future. Your support means Oxford can continue to develop writers, directors and stars. Thank you. Louise Chantal Director/CEO

Partners in life and on canvas, Marc and Bella Chagall are immortalised as the picture of romance. But whilst on canvas they flew, in life they walked through some of the most devastating times in history. The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk comes to Oxford after selling out at London’s Globe Theatre and the Traverse in Edinburgh, where it won the Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award. Emma Rice’s production is drawn in a theatrical language as fluid as Chagall’s celebrated paintings, and woven throughout with music and dance inspired by Russian Jewish tradition.

University of Oxford Student Company Pigfoot Theatre presents
TRAVESTIES Wednesday 2 to Saturday 5 May
By Tom Stoppard
‘What did you do in the Great War?.’ ‘I wrote Ulysses...What did you do?’ ‘Bloody nerve.’ Ageing diplomatic attaché Henry Carr is desperate to recount the events of Zürich in 1917, where – amidst the First World War – revolutionary minds collided: modernist author James Joyce, communist revolutionary Lenin, and founder of Dadaism Tristan Tzara. Fizzing with limericks, razor-sharp wit and laugh out loud moments, Travesties tells of political and artistic rebellion through the fractured reminiscences of a man on the side-lines. Tom Stoppard’s extraordinary tumble through fact and fiction is brought to life in an energetic new production by University of Oxford students. In a post-truth world, Travesties’ bold exploration of the appeal of fiction could not be more fitting.

OPINION
“Every man is a king.” Stanley Kowalski is no exception. Until one summer, when his sister-in-law Blanche comes to stay. Anxious, seductive and fiercely clever, Blanche is just about keeping it together. But her arrival threatens his entire way of life. As the temperature soars and passions intensify, a burning desire threatens to tear their world apart. This bold new revival of Tennessee Williams’ timeless masterpiece is a fiery portrayal of what it means to be an outsider, in a society where we’re all desperate to belong.

OPINION
We are delighted to welcome UK treasures Robert Powell and Liza Goddard back to our stage in this new gripping thriller, not to be missed.
Laura Elliot Programme Director
Sherlock Holmes lives in retirement. He keeps bees, occasionally casts his fly fishing rod, and even plays his Stradivarius when the rheumatism allows. All too aware that he’s older and slower, he’s concerned that he might have lost his touch, paranoid that he is an easy target for his enemies. He never truly believed Moriarty - his arch nemesis - died at the Reichenbach Falls. So when Mary Watson (the wife of his former associate, Dr John Watson) tracks him down, telling him she has seen her long-dead son, James, through the window of 221B Baker Street, apparently alive and well, Holmes is determined to solve the mystery and confront his own demons at the same time. Chilling, gripping and filled with twists and revelations, this new thriller by award-winning dramatist Simon Reade reunites the dream team of Robert Powell and Liza Goddard following huge acclaim for their performances in Relatively Speaking.

PETER PAN Thursday 5 to Saturday 7 July
By J. M. Barrie Adapted and directed by Joanne Pearce
A triumph....performances worthy of a professional company. Oxford Times on Wind in the Willows
This reimagining of Barrie’s magical story sees John returning from the WW1 battlefields in the early Autumn of 1918 to find No. 14 Kensington Gardens transformed; the Lost Boys, once soldiers, recuperate in the nursery, Michael is an unkempt rascal and Wendy is a suffragist too busy campaigning for votes for women to sew on shadows! All is topsy-turvy until Peter Pan flies through the window to transport them all back to Neverland for a final battle with Hook. Following acclaimed productions of Lord of the Flies, Idylls of the King, Alice in Wonderland, Wind in the Willows and Children of the Night, the talented young people of MCS Theatre Academy perform this new adaptation of Peter Pan adapted by Joanne Pearce (RSC Associate Artist).

TWELFTH NIGHT THE TAMING OF THE SHREW THE MERCHANT OF VENICE Wednesday 18 to Sunday 29 July

The perfect setting for an outdoor play, with a gentle breeze shifting the warm air. Stage Talk
On a scale of one to ten of spectacular venues, the Bodleian Library Quad has to score eleven. Oxford Times
An unmissable cultural highlight of Oxford’s summer, Oxford Playhouse and the Bodleian Library welcome back the Globe on Tour with not one, not two, but three shows! Experience theatre as it was performed in Shakespeare’s day, with this unique theatrical event set in the Old Schools Quadrangle, one of the UK’s most glorious locations. In the Elizabethan era, when the theatres closed, a small group of actors, juggling a variety of roles from their extensive repertoire, would leave London and head off on tour. The choice of play performed was left to the most powerful person in the household. So, in a first for Shakespeare’s Globe, eight actors will offer you, the audience, the chance to choose which of three plays you’d like them to perform: The Merchant of Venice, The Taming of the Shrew or Twelfth Night.
Why not book a tour? Guided tours of the Bodleian Library are available daily. For more info or to book visit www.Bodleian.ox.ac.uk/ whats-on/visit

TIDDLER & OTHER TERRIFIC TALES Wednesday 22 to Saturday 25 August A delight from start to finish. A room of children laughing hysterically, all totally mesmerised by the action. ★★★★ Time Out Based on the stories by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler
Four terrific tales – one superb show!
★★★★★ The Spy in the Stalls
Under the sea, out on the farm and into the jungle, these terrific tales are woven together with live music, puppetry and a whole host of colourful characters from Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s best-loved titles: Tiddler, Monkey Puzzle, The Smartest Giant in Town and A Squash and a Squeeze. Funky moves, toe tapping tunes and giggles are guaranteed!
The largely under five years old audience sat enraptured throughout this thoroughly jolly affair. Funny and goes straight for the inner child.
Is Tiddler telling the truth? Will Monkey find his Mummy? Will George The Giant make lots of friends? Can the old lady really squash and squeeze all those animals in?
Brings such joy to children and adults alike. The show was so captivating that no one wanted to miss a moment.

An English Touring Theatre, Oxford Playhouse and Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory production
OTHELLO Tuesday 18 to Saturday 22 September One of the best I have seen. ★★★★ Observer
An astute and powerful production. ★★★★ Times
Articulate, dynamic and thrilling. ★★★★ Stage
This riveting production excels at depicting the racial and religious tensions underlying Othello and Desdemona’s peril. ★★★★ Guardian
Othello is one of Shakespeare’s most startlingly contemporary plays – an electrifying thriller and masterful depiction of a life torn apart by prejudice. Venice: a western colonial power employs the newlymarried Othello, a Muslim general, to lead their army against the impending Turkish invasion. The difficulties of fitting into a society riven by discrimination, fear and mistrust soon take their toll on Othello. Manipulated by Iago, his life quickly unravels as he turns on everything he holds dear. Following a critically acclaimed tour and London run, Richard Twyman’s vital production of Othello is brought to the stage by UK Theatre Award winners English Touring Theatre in a co-production with Oxford Playhouse and Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory.

BARBARA NICE
SOPHIE WILLAN: BRANDED Helen is a burglar. She likes breaking into hospitals. She admits you into a surreal hospital as she sneaks around wards, x-ray rooms and cupboards.
Sophie Willan has had a lifetime of being branded by others. In her new show (fresh from a total sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe), this brutally honest breakout star tells us why.
Directed by Hannah Silva, To Helen Back blurs the boundaries between spoken word, comedy and performance art to analyse sickness, health and what it really means to recover.

OFFSIDE
PLAYMAKER PERFORMED
Written by Sabrina Mahfouz and Hollie McNish
3 Centuries. 1 Goal. A glorious tale of struggle and sweat. It is 1892. It is 1921. It is 2018. Four women from across the centuries live, breathe, and play football. Whilst each of them face very different obstacles, the possibility that the beautiful game will change their futures – and the world – is tantalisingly close. Offside is told through lyrical dialogue, poetry and punchy prose, placing the audience on the touchline of the game of a lifetime. Brilliant and polished overlapping storytelling. ★★★★★ Broadway Baby Show times 7.30pm Tickets £10 Discounts £8 Age guideline 14+

Three evenings of new drama, performed by Oxford Playhouse 12|16 and 17|25 Young Companies, all inspired by the concept of ‘freedom’.
Friday 22 To Saturday 30 June 2018 Keep an eye on our website for the latest news: www.offbeatoxford.co.uk
We fight for basic human rights and individual luxuries but in truth we take our freedoms for granted. You think you know what spurs you on but are surprised each time the past creeps or jumps up to remind you why you do what you do and who you are. If the past is inescapable how do you face it or do you hide in someone or something else? OP Young Playmakers have written short plays exploring the concept of freedom and how we encounter individual and universal freedoms throughout our lives.

Spotlight is for anyone aged 50 or over with an interest in theatre.
During these weekly sessions you will explore technical exercises to develop your performance skills. The company will train to become an ensemble and work on monologues and duologues. Auditions will be held towards the end of May for the company’s first public performance in the Burton Taylor Studio in August.
Each session is a friendly and relaxed lunchtime meet-up to socialise and talk all things theatre. Spotlight is led by a member of OP staff, joined by a guest to talk more about their role in the current show, or themes and issues explored in this season’s productions.
You are advised to attend all five sessions.
Enjoy interesting conversation and a sandwich lunch before taking in the matinee performance. New Spotlighters are always welcome, why not bring a friend?
The sessions are excellent, practical, professional, I’ve learned a lot – and they’re fun!
I love these sessions. Always very interesting and some really excellent speakers.

Access Facilities Oxford Playhouse offers a range of facilities for audience members with access requirements, including level access to the auditorium, low level counters at the Ticket Office and bar, wheelchair spaces (stalls: end of rows E & L and centre of row T), audio described, captioned and signed performances. Look out for these symbols on the show pages of this Guide. Captioned and signed performances are excellent for people who are deaf, deafened and hard of hearing. During a signed performance an interpreter stands at the side of the stage. This is for people who use British Sign Language (BSL). Captioned performances may also be of interest for those whose first language isn’t English and for anyone who finds it helpful to follow the text during a show. Audio described performances are designed for blind or partially sighted audience members.
Via headphones, a live narrator describes the action in the pauses between the onstage dialogue. Touch tours accompany audio described performances. The auditorium has a Sennheiser infrared system for audience members who are hard of hearing. Please ask the Ticket Office at the time of booking to advise you on the best places to sit for using the Sennheiser headsets within the auditorium. are aimed Relaxed performances at anyone who would benefit from a laid-back environment including people with an Autistic Spectrum Condition, a learning disability or very young children who might be afraid of the dark. The atmosphere in the auditorium will be relaxed with the house lights partially on. Audience members will be free to come and go as they please throughout the show and make noise if they want to. Reserve your access tickets by emailing access@oxfordplayhouse.com or calling the Ticket Office on 01865 305305.
