Mostly garage sale type household items are sold, auctioned in lots, set out in lines like a farm clearing sale. Update from the Oxford & Districts Lions Club. The Oxford & Districts Lions Club was formed in September 1979 and has proudly served the local Oxford & Districts Community for 47 years in September this year. The club has always attracted and maintained a good number of members over this time, with our membership now sitting at 48. (41 Men and 7 women). Our clubs age profile sits around the average age of 65, but we are now privileged to have several younger members on board who bring fresh ideas and renewed enthusiasm to the Club. Our club is currently exploring the formation of a Leo Lions Club, and more information will come as this develops. LEO Lions Clubs provide young people (12 - 18 years) and young adults (18 - 30 years) with an opportunity for development and community contribution.

The Oxford & Districts Lions Club is an active and vibrant club. We are extremely pleased with the contributions and the help we have been able to give to our great community. We are all keen to keep up the momentum and deliver the same going forward. To do this we need to encourage new members to join and be part of a great local club that is part of a large successful internation organisation. The Clubs key focus in the community is to serve and assist where we can. This involves both helping individuals and the overall community where this is practical, along with raising funds to either donate or contribute to the various community organisations located in Oxford and Districts and for the wider need. As an example, brief results for our financial year period 01 July 2025 to 30 June 2026 include: • Donated just under $45,000.00 to about 40 local organisations. These are typically in the range of $500.00 - $1,000.00 each. Larger donations included: • $9,000.00 to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. • Two Scholarships of $1,000.00 each and one Dux award of $2,000.00 to pupils from the Oxford Area School. • Donated a total of around $19,000+ to three schools in our area. • Adding in projects such as the 12.5 tonnes of potatoes • delivered to Satisfy Foods, we estimate the overall donated value to be around $75,000.00 - $80,000.00 for the year. Community and fund-raising events successfully completed during the year included: Club members putting in around 4,700 man hours of donated time. Comparable to last year. • Annual Charity Golf Match. • Events such as Wheels with Wings, Oxford Big Fun Day Out, Christmas parade etc. • Catering caravan at the Coast-to-Coast event and

HOT HONEY WHOLE ROASTED CAULIFLOWER O N W H I P P E D H U M M U S F E TA Ingredients 1 whole cauliflower 50g soft butter 1 tbsp chilli oil 2 cloves garlic chopped 1 tsp salt 1 tsp black pepper 4 tbsp hot honey 1 tbsp chilli crisp or chilli oil. Toasted seeds and chopped coriander and parsley
To serve Hummus Whipped Feta 1 pack crumbly feta ½ cup greek yogurt 2 tbsp lemon juice
Method •Pre heat oven to 200oC •Clean up cauliflower, removing outer leaves and the outer core on the base. Wash and pat dry •Place on a baking tray on some foil •Mix room temperature butter, salt, pepper, and chilli oil together, rub all over the cauliflower, place on the foil and loosely wrap the foil around the cauliflower. •Bake for 30 mins in the oven and every now and again try to spoon over the melted butter. •Meanwhile heat the hot honey and chilli oil in small pan. •Once the cauliflower is roasted, spoon over the hot honey and chilli oil and put back in oven for 5 mins. • Serve on whipped feta and hummus, sprinkle with toasted seeds and fresh chopped parsley and coriander. This is perfect served alone with warmed pita bread or as an a compliment to any meat.

Te Kura o Te Poho Rakahua Oxford Area School There are always so many different experiences happening in an Area School, and we often marvel at how we manage to fit so many opportunities into our busy weeks! We are committed to providing a broad range of sporting, cultural and academic opportunities for all our students to enjoy, and this month was certainly no exception. Congratulations to our outstanding Year 6 Cantamath team who achieved first place in the annual Cantamath competition recently. This is a fantastic accomplishment and a reflection of their hard work, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. We are incredibly proud of their achievement. We also hosted our visitors from Hamasaka after a fun-filled week together. A heartfelt thank you to the many families in our community who generously hosted our Japanese students during their stay. Your hospitality and willingness to open your homes make this valuable cultural exchange possible, and we are incredibly grateful for your support. At the same time, we were delighted to welcome a group of students from JNU in China, who have spent the week with us here in Oxford. It has been a pleasure sharing our school and community with them while learning about their culture and experiences. These international partnerships provide enriching opportunities for everyone involved. They broaden perspectives, build lasting friendships, and create meaningful learning experiences not only for our visitors, but also for our own students, host families, and the wider Oxford community. We are fortunate to be part of such a supportive community that embraces these opportunities so enthusiastically. Hamasaka Visit
After our recent trip to Hamasaka we have welcomed 12 students and two staff from Hamasaka Junior High School to Oxford last month. We are celebrating 30 years of this amazing exchange with Hamasaka. The students have had a busy time, taking part in lessons with our Year 4/5 students, Food Tech, Physical Education, Hard Materials and English. Our Hamasaka students have found the food really interesting, they have enjoyed their homestay experience and the experiences that they have had with their host families. They have taken part in a farm visit and a trip to Willowbank. We really appreciate the time and effort our host families have put in to looking after this group of students for what is, an incredible experience. On Sunday, our travellers leave for Auckland before heading back home to Japan. We wish them safe travels and we look forward to our next exchange in two year's time.

Welcome to our new Year 5&6 Teacher Miss Callender Kia ora koutou, My name is Jaime Callender, and I am excited to be joining Oxford Area School. Originally from Canterbury, I've spent the past few years teaching in Auckland before making the move back home. I'm looking forward to getting to know the students, whānau, and wider Oxford community. Outside of school, you'll almost always find me with a book in my hand (or at least one in my bag!)—I'm an avid reader. I also absolutely love sports, especially Formula One (go Williams!), rugby, and both watching and playing ice hockey. When I'm not reading or watching sport, I enjoy exploring New Zealand with my partner Tom and spending time with my very spoiled cat, Boots.
Our Year 13 Adventure Base Leadership class went to Fox Peak Ski Field area to develop their winter mountaineering skills. The camp provided valuable hands-on learning under the expert guidance of Peel Forest instructors in alpine terrain, building snow shelters and caves, learning avalanche safety, and search and rescue techniques. "We got to make lots of memories on our last camp of the year; practicing using ice axes, snowshoes and snow shelter construction to keep safe in snow conditions. " Maia Regan quoted. "This was very valuable risk-taking information that set us up to be able to go back again with friends later on" Phoenix noted. We got to use snowshoes, crampons, probes and avalanche transceivers. A group of students even got up to tackle the summit of Fox Peak leaving at 5am! We would like to extend a sincere thank you to Tim and his team at Peel Forest for their excellent professional instruction, and to Miss Amanda Haines for her support throughout the trip.
I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and becoming part of the Oxford Area School community.

Cantamath Success: Oxford Comes Out on Top!
Last month our Year 6, 7, and 8 mathematicians put their problem-solving skills to the test at the North Canterbury Cantamath Competition. With around 30 schools competing, the challenge was fierce and the questions were anything but easy! We are thrilled to announce that our Year 6 team achieved an outstanding first place, finishing with an impressive score of 90 points! What a fantastic achievement and a testament to their teamwork, perseverance, and mathematical thinking.Congratulations to all of our competitors for representing Oxford Area School so proudly. Whether on the stage or cheering from the sidelines, everyone contributed to a memorable day of learning and achievement. A special thank you goes to Mrs Nerissa Thompson for her dedication in preparing and supporting the teams. Your hard work helped make this success possible. Well done, Oxford mathematicians! Oxford Area School run a Perceptual Motor Program (P.M.P) for its Year 1-3 students. P.M.P is a program that aims to develop the child’s perceptions and understandings of themselves and their world through movement/ motor experiences. It aims to develop perceptions of time and space, the pattern and order of the child's natural world, the laws and limitations that govern the human body. It is not a physical education program alone or music or fitness or dance or gymnastics. It is a program which uses facets of all the above in order to develop children's Perceptions, Hand-Eye Coordination, Balance, Fitness and Locomotion.

In August Oxford Area School & the PTA hosted filmmaker, author and speaker - Rob Cope. It was a great turnout to hear about the ultimate parent's guide to understanding our kids' online world and how to keep them safe. Rob's presentation was in two halves, with a sobering first half talking about the problems our children are encountering online and the second focusing on the solutions.Some stand-out quotes from Rob include "Roblox is one of the biggest predator grooming grounds in the world, and yet most kids are on Roblox. And most parents have no idea about that.” "But really, it's come down to ‘now’: Us parents are so addicted to our own tech that we're dropping the ball." "One of the golden rules of parenting is no devices in bedrooms, like ever. No tablets, no phones, no smart TVs, no gaming consoles. The majority of the harm that happens to our kids happens in privacy, so remove the privacy aspect." Some great korero on the subject, and some great tips and trick to help navigate this area. Perceptual Motor Program
Our Senior Girls’ Netball team had an outstanding week at the School Sport Canterbury Netball Tournament at MainPower Stadium, dominating throughout the competition and finishing with four convincing wins. The tournament provided a great opportunity for the girls to trial new combinations and continue building their confidence and cohesion as they prepare for the South Island Secondary Schools’ (SISS) Netball Tournament in Nelson in September. A fantastic effort from the whole team. Well done, girls!

Oxford friends matter For we three, growing up in Oxford was a special life, and we created friendships that still matter to us.
Agreeing with that sentiment we have booked the Oxford Club from 11:00AM on Sunday 20 September, until past lunch time and we invite you to join us. Let’s have a proper catch up.
We not only sat in the same classrooms, but we played sport, went to ‘the pictures’ or danced in the Town Hall. We felt we knew everyone in the community and their parents and grandparents.
Please let us know if you are coming – for Club numbers and lunch bookings – the Club can be a busy place.
Some of our friends have lived on in Oxford while we have lived in other districts and even overseas, but the Oxford link is still really strong. We think catching up with Oxford friends and acquaintances is just great. But as Winton recently asked, why is it we only do this at funerals? Shouldn’t we have a planned catch up and a natter, rather than waiting until the next one?

Across Oxford, as throughout our District, there are people who give an incredible amount of their time to helping others and strengthening their communities. Often, they don’t think what they are doing is particularly remarkable. They simply see something that needs doing and they get on with it. Collectively, volunteers contribute around 1.5 million hours to our District every year. That represents an extraordinary amount of community events, support and fundraising that simply wouldn’t happen without our volunteers. If you know someone whose contribution deserves recognition, I encourage you to put their name forward for this year’s Community Service Awards. Nominations are now open and close on 6 September. You can pick up a nomination form at the Oxford Library and Service Centre, or online on Council’s website. You might notice a few trees sprouting across the township in the months ahead. Under the Council’s Natural Environment Strategy, a total of 147 trees is being planted across the district, including in Oxford. Council staff have specially selected species to suit local conditions. August also marked an important step in shaping the future of local government in North Canterbury. Hurunui District Council has voted to work in partnership with Waimakariri to create a new North Canterbury Council under the Head Start pathway. This direction reflects what we heard from our communities. In Council’s survey, 91.3% of respondents identified Waimakariri as part of the wider North Canterbury community, compared with 8.7% who identified more closely with Greater Christchurch. A North Canterbury unitary council was the preferred amalgamation model, receiving 54.2% of first-preference votes. We believe this provides the best option to protect local representation and decision-making, while ensuring our rural communities continue to have a strong voice. Touch rugby returns to Oxford this season after a successful competition last year, with a 10-week competition, running on Friday afternoons from Friday 2nd October through to Friday 11th December. Last year 19 teams entered and it was enjoyed by all. This year organisers are hoping to have more come on board. There are both juniors and senior grades. Having these teams involved means a competitive touch competition but most importantly a local one for local families. Oxford Touch is on Friday Afternoons from the 2nd October through to the 12th of December at the Oxford Rugby Club where the fields are buzzing with juniors playing from 4pm onwards till the Seniors start at 6pm. It’s a really fun way to end the week! Hamasaka 2026 Exchange by Scarlett Hart
For over 30 years, the partnership between Oxford Area School and Hamasaka Junior High School has brought the communities together through the biennial exchange of sending local Oxford Area School students overseas to experience life across the Pacific and welcoming Japanese students from Hamasaka into Oxford homes. The bond began with the signing of an official Sister School Agreement in August 1995, and the first exchange went ahead in 1996. In July, 15 Year 12 and 13 students along with two teachers from Oxford Area School set off on an unforgettable cultural adventure to Japan, continuing a proud tradition that sits at the heart of the school community. The 2026 journey started off with two days of exploring Singapore, the perfect cultural stepping stone to ease the shift into Asia. Upon landing in Japan, two days were spent in Osaka before heading to Hamasaka for the core of the trip, where students spent five days with their host families. The trip was brought to an end with an exciting trip to Universal Studios Japan. Beyond the homestay, spending time inside Hamasaka Junior High School gave the Oxford students a firsthand look into Japanese school life. Attending classes alongside their buddies, they experienced everything from highly focused lessons to participating in the daily tradition where students and teachers clean the school together after the school day ends, fostering a sense of community responsibility. The visual highlighted intriguing differences, such as the practice of changing into indoor shoes upon entry and the impressive dedication shown during after-school club activities. Sharing classrooms not only deepened their appreciation for Japan’s educational values of respect and discipline, but also provided a fun, collaborative space to exchange language skills and build lasting friendships with local peers. For many of the participants, the absolute highlight was the unforgettable homestay experience. Stepping into Japanese family homes offered a level of warmth, hospitality, and cultural immersion that no hotel could match. The students bonded with their host families over shared meals and daily routines, creating genuine connections and lifelong friends that easily bypassed language barriers. A highlight was the beach day spent with the host families, soaking in the beautiful scenery of clear blue waters and beautiful coastal landscapes while swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, or on the banana boat, creating lifelong memories.
The students all felt it was meaningful to take part in a 30-year legacy. This ongoing partnership continues to be important to both communities, as the Hamasaka students travelled to Oxford not long after, which helped cement friendships that were made. Part of the adventure involved stepping well outside of normal culinary comfort zones. The group dove headfirst into traditional local dishes, testing their taste buds with everything, specifically the local seafood delicacies like squid and stingray. While it took a bit of initial bravery, it made the entire experience even more memorable. It’s well noted that the most commonly used word by the group was ‘Oishi ’, which means delicious in Japanese. Reflecting on the journey, the shared consensus among the participants was how meaningful it felt to take part in a 30-year legacy. This ongoing partnership continues to enrich both communities, as the Hamasaka students made their journey to Oxford not long after, continuing to build unforgettable memories and connections that will last a lifetime.

The months are steaming by with the willow trees starting to sprout new leaves, and it feels like spring is in the air. An exciting time of the year for Oxford with lots of events coming up, Experience Oxford Spring Festival sounds like a fun day out on 11th October. The Art Studio and Garden Trail is on 25th & 26th October, and The Big Family Day Out is 1st November. We are in the process of another recruitment drive, so if this is something you have ever considered, please be in touch. There are some extremely nasty illnesses in the community presently; some are going to the patients' lungs and causing pneumonia. Please call your GP or Healthline 0800 611 116 or 111 if your situation is life threatening. We have attended 130 jobs so far this year and are beginning to be quite busy. This is a very good time of the year to check your driveways are clear enough to get a big fire truck and Ambulance up it. Also check that your roadside number is very clear at the road gate and your personal gate if you are in a shared driveway situation. The Oxford station is not manned 24/7. I must say it is good to see the sun, and long may it last. We have had a settled period but there is still the potential for some more unsettled weather. With it starting to warm up there have been a few foggy mornings and evenings so as I keep on saying driving to the conditions and slow down. Road traffic seems to a bit of a standout at the moment, it's hard to know where to start and how to phrase it, but here we go. Stop does mean stop, if you have been drinking please don’t drive and if you’re someone with a restricted drivers licence you cannot drive your friends around. Again with the change of seasons comes new hazards, cropping season is upon us and with an increase in agricultural vehicles on the road means slower traffic and towing large hazards. Be patient and give them a little extra room. Last but not least, it is great to see night patrol out there doing their thing, an extra pair of eyes or two always helps, so if you’re interested in landing a hand please come and see us and we can point you in the right direction. The Brigade had six calls in July. There were two motor vehicle crashes. One the sole occupant walked away without injury and in the second, the driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital by Westpac helicopter. The other calls were, one commercial alarm activation where there was a smell of electrical burning, one chimney fire, one wooden fence fire in strong winds and one to a solar energy installation where the inverter overheated and destroyed itself. This brings the total calls for the year to forty two. This months message is; Please keep checking those smoke alarms, they do save lives. If you cannot check them yourself we can help you.
