OPC OFFERS CLASSES, ACTIVITIES FOR

OXFORD SENIORS T

By ANGELA CUTRER Eagle correspondent

he Oxford Park Commission is not just for the young. In fact, it has several opportunities for those 40 and over, and it’s all based on flexible, supportive timelines any “senior” can direct. “The programs we have here at the Oxford Park Commission for seniors, who are aged 40 and up, are things they can do at their own pace,” said Community Relations Director John Davis. He said free classes include cardio-centric exercises, strength training, Pilates and yoga activities. However, he added that “our seniors should never feel obligated to do any or all of the activities we have for them. It’s self-paced and based on individual needs within a group fitness atmosphere.” The Oxford Park Commission’s existence is “to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Oxford by providing professionally designed, comprehensive recreational and leisure programs and services.” The OPC’s mission is to “provide diversity in programming opportunities to meet the changing needs and interests of users; maintain safe, well-managed facilities and programs to ensure opportunities for participation by all; foster the development of knowledge, interests,

and behaviors that promote a healthy lifestyle; encourage the development of positive attitudes regarding participation and sportsmanship; and offer programs and services at a cost that is affordable to all.” The OPC website stated its “Leisure Lifestyles [program] was founded to provide programming use through recreational activity, a prescription that promotes physical, social, cognitive and emotional well-

ness.” In order to meet those goals, OPC offers the following LL exercise activities that seniors may be interested in: •Dancing with a Twist with Leigh Jurney, Tuesday and Thursday, 5:30-6:30 p.m., Room 106-107, Coach Howell Center. This exercise program involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic music. Expert dancers are not expected; this laid-back class is for

those who enjoy having a good time. •Aerobic Exercise, Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, 8-9 a.m., Oxford Activity Center gym. This class focuses on mobility, strength, and range of motion exercises for the whole body. Participants can use chairs, weights, resistance bands and music. The upbeat class workouts to music while the instructor shows them the moves. Participants of all abilities are

welcome. Chairs are available to help modify exercises for those who may benefit from assistance. •Tai Chi with Larry Greene, Tuesdays 5-6 p.m., Saturdays 10-11 a.m., Room 106-107, Coach Howell Center. Tai Chi, a form of mind-body exercise from China, combines slow, mindful movement with deep abdominal breathing. It is a well-loved form of relaxation for 20 percent of the world’s population, making it one of the most popular forms of exercise in the world. As a form of physical exercise, Tai Chi strengthens the legs and core, increases flexibility, improves balance, lowers blood pressure, helps reduce arthritis pain, reduces falls in elderly populations, and promotes longevity. Mentally and emotionally Tai Chi has been shown to improve positive mood factors while decreasing stress, anxiety and depression. •Cardio Fit, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Oxford Activity Center. Cardio Fit - a fun, low-impact fitness class focusing on cardio endurance with energetic dance moves, including the Twist and the Charleston - includes strength training, balance work and flexibility enhancement. Music of all genres helps this workout routine burn calories to get your heart moving.

•Strength Training, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:30 p.m.-1 p.m., Oxford Activity Center. Participants use chairs and other implements to perform tasks and exercise routines. •Pilates, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9-10 a.m., Rooms 106-107, Coach Howell Center. Pilates is a challenging, low-impact class designed to improve muscle strength and control as well as posture, balance and flexibility. Exercises are done upright or lying on a mat, with a focus on good posture and core stabilization. •Yoga with Stevi Self, Monday, Wednesdays, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Coach Howell Center, Rooms 106-107. Gentle yoga involves slow-moving poses and guided breath work to increase strength, flexibility, mobility, balance and mental calm and focus. Stevi, a certified Yoga therapist with more than 20 years of experience teaching to all levels of ability, adapts every class to the needs of the students who attend. There are several different types of

weekly events to help seniors feel their best, but exercise is not the only offering. For example, seniors interested in art can sign up for the Peter’s and McCarty Pottery day trip to Marigold on Dec. 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $30 per person and there is a limit of 24 seats available in the van. Participants will make this trip, which is repeated annually, to visit the pottery stores and have lunch. There is also “Art 101 with Andi Bedsworth,” which meets Fridays 10:311:30 a.m. in the LLO Room. This survey class of many techniques includes some crafts. It is geared for those with no experience in art, though people with some experience will probably still enjoy it. “The emphasis is on the process and not the product,” the OPC website stated. “Students will be exposed to different media, techniques and styles throughout the weeks to give them a relaxed approach to learning art. One does not have to come in consecutive order, though minimally there will be projects that will take more than one class to finish. Materials are provided. To sign up for any classes or events, visit OPC’s website.
