Our mission is to Save the Oceans and Feed the World

Here at Oceana, our goal is to rebuild ocean abundance. What do we mean by ocean abundance? We mean returning populations of fish and other marine species to their full potential, instead of just accepting the status quo. When you look at past accounts of our oceans, you find that the size and numbers of the fish in the sea were much, much larger. The fish caught in the early 20th century were sometimes so large that they dwarfed the fisherman proudly standing next to them in photos. At Oceana, we want to see populations of marine creatures flourish once again, not just hold steady around a diminished baseline. We want to rebuild our oceans so they are once again healthy, diverse ecosystems brimming with food and life. The oceans offer us a rare opportunity to return to a more plentiful past, because unlike many land-based ecosystems, the habitat and animals are still there. We know we can get there with better-managed fisheries, because fish have 2

a remarkable ability to reproduce quickly and because there are multiple examples of fisheries bouncing back when they are better managed. By putting in place science-based quotas, reducing bycatch, and protecting habitat, we can bring the oceans back to abundance. And by limiting offshore oil drilling and other forms of pollution, we can protect the ecosystems that produce abundant oceans.

“Our goal of restoring ocean abundance is practical because it can be achieved through national action.”

Our goal of restoring ocean abundance is practical because it can be achieved through national action by the countries whose oceans produce most of the world’s marine catch. The marine waters of just nine countries and the European Union provide more than two-thirds of the world’s marine catch each year by weight. The waters of 30 countries and the EU give us more than 90% of the world’s catch by weight. A fully rebuilt ocean would provide us with enough marine protein to provide nearly 1 billion people healthy seafood meals every day, forever. In a world where nearly 1 billion people are going to bed hungry tonight, these seafood meals are not a luxury. Moreover, an abundant ocean feeds people without driving the deforestation and

As if these global-scale benefits to human health, hunger, and biodiversity were not enough, a rebuilt ocean fishery can help slow climate change. Livestock are a significant producer of climate changing gasses — one hamburger’s share is equal to the typical commute in the U.S. — and worldwide beef production in 2010 released climate-forcing gasses equal to those produced by Russia. Wild ocean fish do not produce such gasses, and the CO2 released from commercial fishing ships is a trivial part of such global emissions.

aquifer depletion of conventional land-based agriculture. An abundant worldwide marine fishery also promises to improve human health. Medical studies repeatedly show improvements in obesity, cancer, and heart disease when people switch from red meat to fish.

of people healthy seafood every day, securing countless fishing jobs, and showing the world that global scale conservation is surprisingly practical.

We are optimistic that we can save the oceans and feed the world. In so doing, we are protecting marine biodiversity, feeding hundreds of millions
