Each piece of cutlery is rigorously tested – the weight, shape, style and finish all combining to enhance the overall dining experience.

Each range has its own look and feel and finding the most suitable design requires as much consideration as the menus themselves.

Just as each piece possesses a timeless appeal, care has been taken to create strong and durable products that can withstand the rigours of a busy hospitality environment.

Our Cutlery Finishes Satin Robert Welch Designs cutlery comes in a range of finishes, from highly polished to semi-matte. Each giving the final touch that brings the design to life.

There are four distinct finishes within our collection, including our bespoke silver-plating service.

The stainless steel is mirror polished, bringing a smooth, bright finish to the cutlery and a sparkle to the dining experience.

Brushed stainless steel creates a soft, contemporary look and a warmer more relaxed feel for the table.

A distinct, semi-matte effect produced by tumbling the cutlery. A look with its own vintage personality, where every piece exhibits subtle differences.

A finish that can be applied to any range. The colour and high shine of silver-plated cutlery bestows a timeless elegance to any table.

3.5mm COLLECTION

The Baguette style of cutlery is perhaps one of the most familiar in fine dining settings. A classic shape with heritage connotations, it has a good weight: traditionally the sign of quality that lends itself well to this collection. Its tumbled finish (VN) gives a unique visual lustre. Baguette is also available in bright finish (BR).

As with other collections, comfor t in the hand is a Rober t Welch signature. The thickness of the handle gently tapers towards the tip, keeping the weight centrally balanced.

From a single billet of steel, made from fully certified German 1.4116 high carbon stainless steel, the knife is forged to the design specification. Once blanked, it is then fully hardened (to Rockwell hardness rating 55-56) and tempered for optimum strength (to remove brittleness from the metal).

Surfaces are ground to size and the tang is electro-polished to ensure corrosion resistance. The DuPontTM handle is then injection moulded over and into the tang and finished along with the bolster using digitally operated finishing machines. Finally, the cutting edge is prepared using CNC taper grinding technology and the final 15º Japanese edge angle on both sides is prepared by hand. All knives are then ‘whip paper’ tested to ensure quality of production.

Sharpening and Honing

Honing your blade is one of the main aspects of good knife care, although it often gets confused with sharpening. Sharpening is taking away material, whilst honing is the straightening out of an already-sharp blade edge which has become bent out of alignment and therefore blunt.

Designed for simple, quick and easy maintenance. When used regularly the hand-held sharpener, with its ceramic sharpening wheel, hones any plain-edged kitchen knife back to razor sharpness in a few strokes. The tapered groove will restore the blade to its superior sharpness.

The honing of any kitchen knife is essential to preserve its performance over time. We believe little and often is best when it comes to maintenance and recommend honing your knives every four to six weeks, depending on use. Serrated knives need less maintenance but should be sharpened every one to two years by a professional.

The sharpening steel is the traditional choice for professional chefs around the world. Like the hand-held sharpener, this steel hones bent blades back into position. Using a steel requires training and skill to maintain a consistent edge angle.

Founded in 1955 by Robert Welch, Robert Welch Designs is a family-run business based at Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds. Originally, Robert Welch set up as a designer for industry from his workshop in Chipping Campden and from this base opened a shop to sell his own designs.

Over the last twenty-five years his family – Alice and Rupert Welch – have expanded the business to supply customers, retailers and trade customers with a multi award-winning dining, kitchen and living collection of international renown.

Environmental Impact Statement As a company we strive to remain sustainable and mindful of the environment. This extends from the materials we use and the buildings we work in, to our packaging, energy and waste management.

Our Products

Our Buildings

Stainless steel is both a recycled material and fully recyclable. It gives us flexibility in the design process, is easy to work with and is neither harmful to people during its production or its use. Stainless steel is durable, easy to clean and maintain, and benefits from a protective layer that inhibits corrosion and ensures a long life.

When designing The Radford Building, our recently completed business hub and warehouse, we created an energy efficient property, employing a range of environmentally sustainable solutions including a ground-source heat pump. The entire plot and building have been designed to catch rainwater, and this feeds a specially planted pond and nature area created to encourage and protect local wildlife.

Not only is stainless steel easily recyclable, but the process can be repeated indefinitely. In fact around 80% of the stainless steel in use is estimated to be recycled (sustainablestainless.org).

Our Packaging We have recently renewed our packaging and it is now almost entirely recyclable. The board in our boxes can be fully recycled.

We have removed the plastic film wrap around our packaging for all retail outlets. We are currently investigating suitable alternatives to replace the internal plastic tray.

All our principal sites operate a zero to landfill policy, and we work hard with our waste management providers to ensure we make the very best use of all surplus materials.

We are determined to continually improve and reduce our impact on the environment and encourage customers, suppliers and other stakeholders to do the same.

Please note that many of our products are hand-finished leading to occasional variance in dimensions. For some of our larger products, this can be several millimetres.
