There’s an old-testament reference to faithful remnants. It refers to examples of leadership that rise to the challenge and come from unexpected sources. Scripture is full of these examples where resources and support show up from very unexpected places.

The Owensboro Catholic School system continues to thrive and grow because of the levels of support that continue to come from unexpected sources. While we are currently in the process of challenging and changing times, we continue to build upon a strong foundation with new leadership and resources that come from unlikely places.

We continue to base our future on some basic questions: 1.

Who are the best people to help us guide faculty, staff, and students to live out our faith in a world of academics?

2.

Who can help us develop the most efficient ways to deliver this outstanding education?

3.

What are better methods of connecting our Catholic faith to the world of academics and extracurriculars?

A lot goes into moving this complex system forward, but it is an effort backed by a community of faith, service, and prayer. Even faith-filled leadership doesn’t always get it right, but we try to surround our organization with people of creativity and hard work who are passionate about this mission!

WE ARE APPRECIATIVE! It’s hard to imagine the Owensboro community without Independence Bank. In banking years, this is still a young organization that continues to grow and expand into new markets. But in addition to their focus on their business model, they have an amazing and generous focus on efforts that support our entire community. They are generous with hundreds of organizations, and our educational system is just one of their beneficiaries. Community banking organizations are becoming something of a remnant in the current world of banking, except locally where we have a great example of what happens when your business model builds on the strengths of their organization and builds on the strengths of the community they serve.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

This is not goodbye, but see you later

Gates Settle OCHS Principal

After being a teacher, coach, and assistant principal for 17 years and a principal for 23 years, I have been reflecting a lot lately about my 40 years in education. I think back to the 7th grade when I knew what I wanted to do, which was most influenced by my mom and dad, who were both career educators. It was reinforced by many teachers and coaches along the way.

On my first day at Owensboro Catholic High School, I was greeting students as they came in. I didn’t know any of them, but I could tell there was a different feel here. Granted, students are usually excited to come back to any school the first few days, but it was more than that. There seemed to be a closeness, comfortableness, and easy friendliness that I had never noticed at any of my previous schools. Students actually seemed as if they were enjoying seeing each other and were excited with the anticipation of the upcoming year. There was a feeling throughout those first days that is hard to describe and it continued into the weeks, months, and years to this day.

In all schools, there are going to be tests, quizzes, homework, rules, policies, and adults giving instruction. However, at Owensboro Catholic High, there are so many “extra” things woven into the school days throughout the year. Some of these occur daily, but many come along at different times of the year that help build strong relationships within each class and with the staff that contribute to what so many students refer to as the “family atmosphere.” These many activities in a safe, comfortable environment create a bonding experience that lasts far beyond high school. But without a doubt, the single biggest reason that makes OCHS different is the reinforcement of our faith every day.

Our daily prayer, adoration, weekly Masses, days of recollection, and retreats that allow students to pray, reflect, and worship side by side, explain what makes us so different.

Since I have been at OCHS, there have been many different challenges for our school and some of the toughest include the passing of an outstanding and well-respected teacher, Tony Kraus, and a very popular and well-liked student, Logan Davis. We have had many, many other types of sad and difficult situations for students and staff. We also had the Pandemic and the threat of Continues on page 14

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Substory to the Story Many years ago, I heard in a leadership class the perils of thanking, naming, or listing people due to the concerns of leaving someone out. The caveat was to make sure that lists and names were double and triple-checked to ensure no one was missed. Unfortunately, I did not follow this advice when speaking at Graduation for the Class of 2023. In my attempt to list every senior in what we called their “billboard quotes,” the list was double and triple checked and the name was there but I over-looked it.

My biggest fear of trying to name every senior hit me after the ceremony. I skipped over one of them. It was right after the teacher recognition, and I turned my page

before reading the last name.

When I completed this portion of the address, I asked if anyone was left out and I saw no one raise their hands which in hindsight, was very typical for this senior as to not draw attention. I moved on through the ceremony and only after I was replaying some things in my mind, did it occur to me that I actually left out what I thought was one of the ones that everyone needed to hear the most.

Here is the one I left out:

Owensboro Catholic is such an easy place to take for granted because things go so well and are so good each day. It is a great place to go to school ... I loved it!

Knowing how it feels to be left out or have your child left out, I immediately called the parents to explain and apologize.

However, no answer. I texted the senior student to apologize. Here are portions of the text between us.

Me: This quote was one of the good ones that I was going to talk about in-depth just because I think sometimes those who have never been anywhere else can take OCHS for granted… I was so sorry I skipped over it - Please accept my apology.

Response: It was a great ceremony, it’s no big deal at all. Congrats to you, you have had a great career.

Me again: I hate anyone being overlooked, and I tried to call your mom and dad, so please pass on my apology.

Response: Please do not worry, they completely understand.

Not long after, mom texted me too.

There is a reason why this senior student was given one of the highest honors at awards night by receiving the Harold Mischel Award.

Her grace and understanding of the situation at the moment is something we could all learn from and this is just another example of why Catholic High has put something in my heart that I will keep forever. Thanks, Katie Riney!

A Goodbye from Marilyn Pace During this past school year, I have received good wishes from many people in our community. Now I would like to express my gratitude to those who made my job not only easier but such a joy! I have always been fortunate to have good help. When I switched from the classroom to the library, Margaret Smith and ElMarilyn Pace as a brand new French len Gilles had already Teacher at OCHS been library assistants for 7 or 8 years. Fortunately, I was smart enough to listen to their good advice. Once they retired, Josie Hagan was hired, and she stayed with me for 32 years. During the few years when she was part-time, Margie Ebelhar and Karen Thomas helped as well. For the last 4 years, Charlotte Cecil has been a tremendous help. Not only did they all help me in the library, but they held down the fort when I was at conferences, teaching classes, organizing class fundraisers, or decorating for a prom. Never once did they say, “This isn’t in my job description.” Of course, for the first 30 years, I

Marilyn started her career as a French and English teacher and was in that role for 6 years, and 44 as a media center specialist, probably ranking as the longest-serving OCHS employee ever. Marilyn’s high energy, ideas, and willingness to serve made her a valuable resource for students and staff alike. She was always willing to take on new initiatives like the all-school read and was always ready to step up and help. Marilyn also served as our school Historian-knowing anything and everything about Owensboro Catholic!

Owensboro Catholic Schools are known for doing more with less. For our Owensboro Catholic Baseball team, that no longer is the case.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors: the Reid family, Independence Bank, and family and friends of Owensboro Catholic Baseball, a brand-new hitting facility was built behind OC Baseball’s home field!

“The hitting facility played an amazing part in the success we had this year, and it opens up a lot of possibilities that we never previously had. It allows for the team to put in the extra work and will provide an amazing place to practice for years to come.”

Tom McFarland, Independence Bank’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Lending, saw the need firsthand. “Owensboro Catholic is a special place; all of my kids came through and were involved in athletics.” Tom desired a place where our athletes could be committed to their sport. Somewhere our players can put in extra time and hard work. The project landed in the right ears, Chris Reid with Independence Bank, and gained the momentum and support it needed to finalize plans and set this project into motion. Chris Reid said, “This project was Tom’s dream. I am a 1976 graduate of OCHS, and this school just means a lot to me and my family. My son, Jacob played baseball with the Aces for 3 years in high school. We have grandkids coming into the system now with hopes they will do

Owensboro Catholic Baseball’s home is located at The Owensboro City Park, Chautauqua Park. It didn’t take too long to realize that constructing a fieldhouse on city property required some planning. Tom McFarland oversaw the design plans of the new facility and performed the land tests required by the city. “The process was so much more time-consuming and involved than I ever imagined. I could not have seen this project through without the assistance of the Engineer and Project Manager, Chris Lovekamp.

Chris was invaluable to the process. As with any project – the unforeseen is inevitable. I didn’t realize how long the permitting and building process can take but 2 years later, here we are! A project that began in the Fall of 2021 was finally completed in the Spring of 2023.”

With or without a new facility, we know our players are grounded in hard work, determination, and faith. However, we know this new facility will make those principles shine through even more. We are pleased to know that our Owensboro Catholic Baseball players will carry the legacy they have learned from those who have walked before them and will share it with those who will follow behind them.

Track and Field As I reflect on the 2023 Track & Field season, all I can do is smile. For a good while now, we lay out 3 goals: “Love Your Teammates, Do What’s Right, and Try Your Best!” With that being said, we made some great strides this season. We mixed in older with the younger athletes that came on board and were able to find success beyond belief. The love I witnessed, doing what’s right and trying their best works hand in hand. -Coach Jim Ivey We had 22 personal records at the two biggest meets of the year, Region and State! We collected 4 PRs at State which is Big! The 4X800 Relay (Ella Claire Goetz, Emree Coomes, Ashlie Hayden, and Ainsley Sutter) started with a season-best, 11:20.72. Michael Lyon followed with a Shot-Put throw of 41-7.25 feet. Mallary Bailey was up next with a 7th place finish in the 100 Meter Hurdles with a time of 16.58. Lastly, Ainsley Sutter finished the 3200 Meter Run with a personal record of 13:11.03.

Archery

The archery team continued to excel in several indoor and outdoor 3D regional events during the season with many archers shooting their personal best. As the team continued to improve, 2 individuals (Grace Calhoun, Alyson Isbill) earned 3rd place finishes in their respective events.

Grace competed using a barebow in the indoor event while Alyson used her compound bow for the 3D outdoor competition. The team also engaged in competing in both the S3DA KY state and National Tournaments in Owensboro. It was a great season!

The Boys’ Tennis Team finished 16-6 and tied for the regional championship but lost the tiebreaker to finish runner-up. Cooper and Houston Danzer won their second consecutive Regional Doubles Championship and lost to the #1 seed in the first round of the State Tournament. Patrick Hauke/ Joseph Merchant were regional semi-finalists and advanced to state but lost in the first round.

The Girls’ Tennis Team finished with a record of 23-1. The girls won the regional with a perfect score. Ella Cason beat Aisha Merchant in the singles final and Isabelle Reisz/ Julia Marshall beat Ella Grace Buckman/ Elizabeth Hayden in the double’s final. All the girls won their first match at state. Ella lost to the #1 seed in the second round at state. Aisha lost to the #2 seed in the second round. Ella Grace/ Elizabeth lost to the #3 seed and Isabelle/ Julia lost to #5-8 seed in the third-round tiebreaker.

I also ask seniors if they are ready to graduate and so many of them tell me they are ready to graduate, but they don’t want to leave! I think that statement speaks volumes about their time here and it means even more to me now because even though I didn’t go to school here, I feel like I did because it has just become a part of me. This has been the best job I have ever had. And while I am ready to retire, I don’t really want to leave. The irony is that all those comments seniors have made to me for the last 12 years are exactly what I would now say!

all the former/current administrators, office staff, teachers, and support staff who helped me so much when I began. That help, and support has continued to this day. They are second to none and their dedication and commitment to OCHS has made coming to “work” special. My heartfelt thanks go out to all of them and to the entire Catholic High community.

And so, with that, I will reiterate what I have stated so many times along this journey; I am humbled, thankful, and proud to have served as the Principal of Catholic High and I can only hope that Catholic High has benefitted from my being here as much as I have benefitted from being at OCHS. As the kids would say, “Catholic High ‘til I die!”

She has worked in the front office in a secretarial role and finished up her career as the media center assistant. Project Updates Right outside my office door is the humming and clanging of heavy equipment working on the final phases of the OCHS parking lot. It is loud and distracting at times, but I do not mind the noise because it means progress is taking place. I know many of you share my excitement of the vision of a nice, smooth parking lot for our families and students to drive on. After all, the little things really are the big things.

Recently during construction in the high school courtyard, remnants of a swimming pool were discovered. Before Owensboro Catholic became a school, it was the Medley

homestead owned by Thomas A. and Florence Ellen (Nellie) Wathen Medley.

There were 15 children born there. The home had a built-in swimming pool in the location which is now the courtyard. One of the brothers, Ben, had the pool built. They called it Ben’s pool. The last unmarried daughter, Margaret M. Medley, sold the property to Bishop Cotton. When OCHS was built, the school avoided the expense of digging up the pool, so they filled it in. Later, when decisions were made to add onto the school, contractors worked around the area where the pool was buried.

In saying these familiar words, it reminds me of your annual gift to the OC Connect Appeal (formerly Phonathon). It may seem like a small sacrifice you make every year to contribute to the Phonathon, but that equates to BIG things for OCHS. Ways of Giving There are many ways of giving so that you are able to meet your needs and have the opportunity to support OCHS in a meaningful way. Consider stretching your gift by making a pledge over a three-year period to maximize your support.

Cash – The most common method of making a gift is to contribute cash. You may benefit from such gifts with a charitable deduction on your tax return.

Securities – Stocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares that have appreciated can have an immediate impact and also create an income tax deduction for you based on their current value. Because there is no capital gains tax when you make a charitable gift, you receive an additional tax benefit above and beyond the charitable gift donation.

Life Insurance – You may donate by making OCHS the owner and beneficiary of your insurance policy.

Planned Gifts – Planned giving is the process of carefully selecting the best method and asset for making a charitable gift. Such a gift can enable you to take full advantage of the tax laws to accomplish your financial and charitable goals. Generational sacrifice, dedication, and commitment to Catholic education

Since the inception of Owensboro Catholic High, there has been a member of the Martin and Anita McNulty family walking its halls.

“My parents prioritized our Catholic education.

Raising 16 children in Catholic schools was not easy back then and it is not easy now. Catholic schools take commitment and sacrifice from the entire family. We played hard, worked hard, and prayed hard,” said David McNulty ’76, the youngest of the Martin and Anita McNulty family. The McNultys knew the importance of Catholic education, and their choice to send their children to Owensboro Catholic started a long line of commitment to the school from the family for generations to come.

Every day we are faced with a choice. Sacrifices are part of life. Catholic education can be considered one of the most important sacrifices you face and the reward of your sacrifice will linger far after the last tuition payment has been made. “Catholic education, along with our church, has taught us how to live out our faith and be proud of it, and stand with a community of

believers. Catholic schools help us to stay in line with our beliefs,” said Lori and Phil Roberts Jr ’91. The Roberts have one child in the Owensboro Catholic system, as well as a daughter who graduated in 2020, a son in 2022, and another in 2023. “Owensboro Catholic is one big family where everyone knows your name and ALL are welcome! As a parent sending my kids to Catholic schools it has always been a comforting feeling knowing that Christ is at the center of the school, and chances are my kids are classmates with some of my former classmates’ children. OC is home!”

An investment made in support of Catholic education is an investment made not just in students but in the community and beyond. “Catholic education was important to my parents because they wanted to make sure we were prepared to be successful in life. As parents of three boys now, Barrett and I also want to make sure our children have the strong academic, emotional intelligence, and moral character necessary to succeed and thrive in today’s world. Keeping our Catholic faith a high priority has definitely been beneficial in raising our boys to be the best version of themselves,” said Amy Roberts Clayton ’93, daughter of Rachel McNulty Higdon ’70 and Phil Roberts, Sr. “We owe our Catholic education to my parents’ faith commitment,” said David. “This is something we have learned from them and have instilled in our own children. Family traditions are important. When someone decides not to send their kids to Catholic school, sometimes an entire generation may miss out.” When asked how David’s Catholic upbringing and education have helped shape his life after high school he recited James 2:26: For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead. A simple reminder to us all that good works are born from a healthy relationship and faith in God. What better way to help grow and nourish your faith in God than a quality Catholic education?

Jonathan Garner ’16 Jonathan Garner, son of Paul and Debra Garner, received his Juris Doctorate Degree from Belmont University of Law on May 5, 2023. After graduating from Owensboro Catholic, Jonathan spent one semester at Kentucky Wesleyan College, then transferred to the University of Kentucky where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a dual degree in accounting and finance in 2020. While attending Belmont he served on the Trial Advocacy Group and the Criminal Law Journal for 2 years. He also interned each summer break, first in Clarksville, TN then in Clearwater, FL. Jonathan’s immediate plans include preparing for the bar exam and seeking employment opportunities in Phoenix, Az. His parents are grateful for the Catholic schooling he received in Owensboro and for the educational opportunities afforded by such.

ACTIVE DUTY Zachary Brett ’11 Zachary Brett enlisted in the United States Army in 2016 to be a Mortarman (11C) in the Infantry. He attended basic training at Fort Benning Georgia and after graduating from basic training he reported to his first duty station at Fort Polk Louisiana, a part of the 10th Mountain Division. Shortly after being in his unit, he went on his first deployment to Iraq in 2017-2018. When he returned from that deployment, he attended the Army’s Basic Leader Course and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. In 2018, he re-enlisted to go Airborne. After graduating from Airborne school, he moved to Fort Bragg North Carolina in 2019 and became part of the 82nd Airborne Division.

He said, “Jumping out of a perfectly good aircraft is one of the best decisions I ever made!” In 2020, right before the pandemic, he attended the Army’s Advanced Leaders Course where he graduated number two in the class and was promoted to Staff Sergeant. He served a second deployment to Iraq from 2020-2021. Upon his return, he re-enlisted again and moved to Fort Carson, Colorado to be part of the 4th Infantry Division which is where he is currently living.

Max Pride ’22 Max Pride enlisted in the United State Navy February 9th, 2023 and graduated from the Naval Bootcamp at Great Lakes Naval Command, April 21st, 2023. Following bootcamp he joined the Airmen Apprentice program located at Pensacola Naval Base in Pensacola, Florida. Max received his certificate of completion from the apprentice program and has been promoted to Airman E3. He will move on to A-School for Naval Aircrewmen operations with a rate of Electronic Warfare Operator (EWO).

EWO’s fly in fixed wing long range patrol/reconnaissance aircraft, operating radar and electronic support systems locating surface and sub-surface contacts. Max is very thankful for the relationships forged during his time at Owensboro Catholic schools, and how that support system continued when he joined the military.

Ashley Calhoun Hancock ’03 Ashley Hancock was highlighted for Women’s History Month in Southwest Florida, for making a difference in her community. Ashley is a Speech Language Pathologist and owner of Play on Words Pediatric Therapy. She says her favorite part of her job is “advocating for children and enabling them to communicate their wants and needs. “I love the relationships I have built with children and their families during the therapy process and knowing I have changed a child’s life is truly humbling.”

ACES FACES Robert ’97 & Katie ’99 Edge Owensboro Catholic’s Derby Contender

Bill Jones ’73 and Steve Castlen ’73 Bill Jones and Steve Castlen discovered they shared a “bucket list” item of a safari in Africa. Bill and Steve knew that in addition to seeing lions, elephants, and giraffes in their native habitats, their trip needed a different component.

Before they left for their grand adventure, they put out a call for donations that they could deliver during their visit to Tanzania. They collected five suitcases full of donations to help the community. They said after spending a few days observing the people, the culture, and the harsh realities of what the people of Tanzania face day-to-day to survive, it made it much more evident why they came on this trip. It was a trip of a lifetime and a life-changing experience.

Mary Clare Mills ’19 Mary Clare Mills is currently discerning religious life with the Daughters of Holy Mary of the Heart of Jesus in Steubenville, Ohio. She entered as a postulant on May 27. Mary Clare heard our Lord’s call when she became active with FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) while at Murray State University. The Daughters of Holy Mary are centered in Madrid, Spain and are a Contemplative/Missionary Order. Please pray for Mary Clare as she takes the initial steps of this amazing journey!

May marks the end of the school year, the start of summer, and in our Bluegrass State, the Kentucky Derby. The 149th Kentucky Derby was more thrilling than ever because Owensboro Catholic was represented on the track. Robert and Katie Edge are part owners of Confidence Game alongside his team at Don’t Tell My Wife Stables: Keith Desormeaux, Kirk Godby, and Rob Slack. Confidence Game won the Rebel Stakes in Arkansas, which solidified his position and qualified him for the Derby. With 21-1 odds at the start of the Derby, Confidence Game fiercely led the pack with his Jockey, James Graham, for most of the race. After a highstrung race, Confidence Game ended up placing tenth.

An ecstatic Robert stated, “It was such a fun ride. My dad was a horseman and because of that, my family grew up watching horse races. It was an absolute dream come true getting to experience the races we grew up watching in a new way, from the owners’ boxes. God has blessed us with this wonderful experience.”
