OCS MISSION STATEMENT

Owensboro Catholic Schools share in the mission of the Church in communion with families and parishes to provide excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics which prepares students to become responsible individuals as well as members of their family, Church, and community.

Preparing Leaders, Achievers, and Believers

Christ is the Reason for This School

A New Face

I am Fr. Daniel Dillard. I have been a priest for twelve years, and, after being Pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church in Franklin and Christ the King Catholic Church in Scottsville for seven years, Bishop Medley appointed me Vocations Director, Associate Pastor of Sts. Joe and Paul, and Chaplain of OCHS. These first few months have been a bit of a rollercoaster as I adjust to these new positions and the juggling act involved in wearing three different hats at the same time. However, it has been a great joy to work with the faculty, staff, and students of OCHS. We have had a good start to the school year, though it has not been without its hardships. COVID-19 remains a consistent influence on our dayto-day life, and at OCHS we have been particularly impacted by the deaths of two parents from the disease. While these tragedies have been a source of pain for our community, I firmly believe God is with us in this, and he will carry us through.

When you enter the office at OCHS there is a framed quote over the door, “Be it known to all who enter here that Christ is the reason for this school. He is the unseen but ever present teacher in its classes. He is the model of its faculty and the inspiration of its students.” I love that this is the first thing someone sees when they enter our school because this is a summation of all that Catholic schools are about. It is also the summation of what I believe my role as Chaplain is. I view my duty to this school, its faculty, its students, and its parents is to be a constant reminder that our goal as a Catholic school is to make well-educated, well-rounded adults who are prepared for the world, but first and foremost to make disciples of Jesus Christ. As the quote says, He is the reason for this school. Everything else we do, while important, is second to Him. I’m overjoyed to be here and that the bishop entrusted me with this important task.

Owensboro Catholic High School students set new ACT test school record

Around this time each year, as the nights get cooler and the days grow shorter, we await student ACT test results. Grounded in 60 years of research, ACT scores are a key performance indicator used by OCS to assess the overall quality of education students receive. ACT outcomes are the culmination of the effort put forth by OCS teachers from kindergarten through high school.

When ACT scores arrived recently, we were once again impressed by student performance. The Owensboro Catholic High School class of 2021 achieved an ACT test composite score of 23.5—the highest result in school history. The statewide composite score is 19.2, and the national score is 20.3.

These students recorded the highest ACT composite score in the history of OCHS. The results are even more impressive when one

ACT Average Score Comparisons CLASS OF 2021

considers the unprecedented disruptions students and faculty faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ACT test is the leading US admissions test, measuring what students learn in high school to determine academic readiness for college. The ACT composite score contains results from multiple-choice tests in four areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science.

We are extremely proud of the young men and women who have accomplished this record setting composite score. It is important to take this opportunity to recognize the investment parents, guardians, and parishes make in the interest of helping each OCS student achieve success.

These scores illustrate not only the hard work of our students, but also the tireless dedication and effort put forth by all the faculty and staff of the Owensboro Catholic Schools. ACT tests are used at the high school level both as a measure of student performance and as a standard for acceptance into college.

2nd Annual Alumni Football Game

Drew Hartz to George Kurtz for a first down…that’s Richard Hayden, quarterback from the class of ’88 to Billy Boarman, class of ’99, for the touchdown!

Once speculation and conversation on which Aces player was the best or how the Aces would match up, came to life at the 2nd Annual Friday Night Lights on July 30, 2021.

The event, hosted on Independence Bank Field at Steele Stadium on the campus of Kentucky Wesleyan College, has become the annual kick off to a new Aces football season.

Born in 2019 from the Aces Gridiron Club, the evening featured a free youth football camp, a Green and White scrimmage for the current OCHS team and then the 7-on-7 alumni game.

The youth camp featured Aces players and coaches instructing kids on the fundamentals of football. Over 100 young Aces participated, several 3rd generation Aces were on the field. The kids learned about blocking, tackling, throwing, and catching. By the turn out and the talent, the Aces sideline and spirit will be strong for years to come.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

Following the camp, the 2021 Aces took to the field for a controlled scrimmage. The team was split into 1st team offense and 1st team defense. The simulated game went three quarters, with the 3rd quarter featuring players from the Junior Varsity and Freshman teams. The Aces looked sharp in the scrimmage, and it was a good opportunity to get some work under the lights and in front of a live crowd. The 2021 Catholic Aces have 50+ players and will be led by 9 seniors from the class of 2022.

4 THE GREEN AND WHITE n FALL 2021
COVER STORY

“Those guys may not move quite as fast as they once did, but they certainly haven’t lost their competitive spirit. One of the best parts of going to the Catholic schools is being part of an extended family. It was kind of like a family pickup game on a Sunday afternoon, competitive but more about enjoying the time together.”

John Moore

OC Alumni Game Announcer, Supporter, and Parent

“Playing in the Alumni game is a great opportunity to meet players from different eras, players that I have cheered for. This year was extra special that I got to play with my son who was a recent graduate. I was the oldest player, and he was the youngest.”

To round out the night, the 2nd Annual Alumni 7-on-7 football game took place with over 50 former Aces taking the field and representing five decades! The players were drafted into three teams and played each other in a round robin competition.

The Green team led by former assistant coach George Randolph took on the White team led by former Aces assistant coach and current Owensboro Catholic Schools Superintendent, David Kessler “Coach K”. That match was followed by the St. Frances Academy All-Stars coached by current OCHS assistant, Chip Pride taking on Team Coach K.

The games featured teams of 7 on the field pitted in a two-hand touch passing game. The teams followed the same format that the high school team follows in passing tournaments as they prepare for the season.

Team Randolph went undefeated on the night, beating both St. Frances and Coach K. Their undefeated performance was followed by St. Frances with a 1-1 performance on the night narrowly beating Coach K.

Win or lose, all former Aces had a great time, and are already looking forward to the 2022 Friday Night Lights Alumni Football game! ♠

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

I am not talking about Christmas just yet. I am talking about Thanksgiving! I find this holiday so enjoyable because it is a time to gather and be thankful for our blessings, our families, and our friends without the pressures of selecting the perfect gifts. We simply get to share a meal and enjoy one another’s company.

Although the holiday season has arrived quickly, I won’t allow it to rob me of the opportunity to take some time and reflect on each one of you, our amazing alumni and friends. It seems cliche’ to say we could not achieve our mission without you but it is the truth! If you could sit in my chair for one day you would see the outpouring of love and generosity for this special school. I do love some friendly competition amongst our graduating classes, but at the end of the day, we are one body in Christ and we do not stand alone. Let us reach our goals together.

Owensboro Catholic High School alumni have the opportunity to sustain the tradition of excellence through a planned gift. One of the simplest ways to make a meaningful planned gift is through a bequest in your will. If you have already included OCHS in your will or other long-range plan, please let us know! It would be our pleasure to include you as a member of our Legacy Society.

Please call Natalie Hayden at 270-686-8896 for rate information or a confidential, personalized proposal.

CATHOLIC FOUNDATION OF WESTERN KENTUCKY

Endowments are better than bingo!

We have a lot of traditions here at Catholic High. Most of these traditions create great memories and stories later in life, while a few others seem more like a necessary evil. You don’t have to guess which category the OCHS bingo falls in! Started in the early 1970’s, bingo continues to save EVERY family in the Middle and High School hundreds of dollars a year. We ask for volunteers each year because it’s the way we support each other in the Catholic School community. But many families don’t even know that the volunteers who work bingo are saving EVERYONE higher tuition costs.

In addition, a portion of bingo revenue currently subsidizes the athletic and band programs. Past bingo profits have also supported tuition assistance, the general budget, and other unfunded needs like technology or capital improvements.

Another great tradition began in the early 90’s when Catholic High started raising money for its endowment. Today interest and dividends from the endowment provide nearly a half million dollars a year, which is why our annual tuition is much less than private schools throughout the state.

In the fall of 2018, another new tradition originated: solicitation began for a sports/band endowment. With bingo volunteers dwindling, and then with the onset of the coronavirus, I continued to ask for support for an endowment that may eventually replace the income we now receive from bingo. At this time we are halfway to our goal of raising $1.5 million! Our policy guidelines will allow a distribution of 5% of a three-year rolling average of the endowment fund balance.

When COVID-19 hit, bingo income stopped for quite a while, and it has been sporadic throughout this year. The blessing is that our alumni and supporters, many who don’t even have children in the system, have increased their generous donations to our school community. It’s a blessing to all of us when we see how appreciative many families are for the support they received back when they had children in the Catholic School system.

So, while we won’t let up with bingo (which means we hope you’ll volunteer for a turn), we are trying to establish some future revenue source for the time when bingo is no longer available or profitable.

If you are interested in contributing to the OCHS Athletic/Band Endowment, please contact Gates E. Settle at OCHS, (270) 6843215 or Natalie Hayden (270) 686-8896.

ReunionsMilestone

We want to send a special thank you to our alumni who took advantage of the benefits we offer at OCHS for reunions. It was great to have so many alumni roaming the halls this summer during a tour hosted by OCHS! The stories shared during the tours, the memories relived, sheer shock of what has remained the same after all these years and what improvements we’ve made gets us excited for being part of your next milestone reunion!

You think students are mischievous today? Read these lyrics to the OC Fight Song made up by alumni in the 60’s!

“Cheer cheer for Ol Catholic High

You bring the whiskey, I’ll bring the rye

Send the Freshman out for gin

And don’t let a sober Sophomore in Juniors never stagger, Seniors never fall

We sober up on wood alcohol

While our dear ol’ faculty

Lay drunk on the study hall floor”

JD Meyer ’91

Owensboro attorney

J.D. Meyer will serve as president of the Kentucky Bar Association (KBA) for a one-year term which began on July 1, 2021. Meyer took his oath of office during a ceremony held on July 30th in Bowling Green, KY. The oath was administered by Kentucky Supreme Court Chief Justice John D. Minton Jr. The KBA Board of Governors oversees the management of the KBA, an independent agency of the Kentucky Supreme Court. The board assists the court in regulating the practice of law in Kentucky, including lawyer discipline and continuing legal education. Additionally, it works to promote the efficiency and improvement of the judicial system in accordance with Supreme Court Rules.

J.D. said his focus has been helping attorneys cope with the stresses of the profession. The Bar’s Kentucky Lawyer Assistance Program helps attorneys struggling with issues such as substance abuse, and psychological or emotional distress that impair the ability to practice law.

Meyer is an attorney practicing in Owensboro with the law firm of Meyer and Meyer, LLP. He is married to Megan and has 5 children: Macy ’18, Andrew ’19, Anna Lee ’20, Will ’21 (Union Co High) and Molly who is currently a sophomore at OCHS.

Marilyn Pace ’69

On April 21, 2021, Marilyn Pace was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Green River Association of School Librarians (GRASL). The award is presented to an individual for continuous, sustained support to the school library profession.

Mrs. Pace was honored for her 42 years as the library media specialist at Owensboro Catholic High School. As a member of the Kentucky Association of School Librarians (KASL), she represented non-public schools for several years. She also served as president of the Second District (now GRASL) and on the state board of KASL.

“I have gone from using a reel-to-reel tape recorder and a 16 mm film projector to using such programs as Screencastify and Google Classroom while helping research students during the recent times when we have been virtual,” Pace commented.

Among Pace’s many successes are a student book club, a collaboration with the Daviess County Public Library teen director Sarah Jacobs to create a Mock Printz Award Committee, and the school’s first allschool read last year with a virtual visit from Salt to Sea author Ruta Sepetys.

“We have all heard the proverb ‘It takes a village to raise a child,’” Pace said. “I would like to think that the library is at the center of that village.”

Lucy Kurtz ’16 – Fulbright Scholar

Lucy Kurtz graduated summa cum laude from the University of Louisville Speed School of Engineering in May of 2020 with a Bachelor’s in Bioengineering. After graduating, she began her role in a rotational program at Ethicon Endo-Surgery in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ethicon is a branch of Johnson and Johnson specializing in minimally invasive surgical devices. Lucy joined the company as an Assistant Development Engineer, which means she communicated with the Design team to develop medical tools (such as electrocautery and ultrasonic devices). Lucy completed one rotation in the Engineering Development Program in 2020, then left the company in January of 2021 to take on a Fulbright Research Grant at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. Lucy was awarded the scholarship in May of 2020, but her start date was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lucy conducted research at McGill University from January to August. On her grant, she worked on several projects for the McGill Bioengineering Department, including developing tools for assessing the microrheological characteristics of bioprinted hydrogels and decellularizing mouse lymph nodes for the future fabrication of lymphatic system-based bioprinted models. She was able to work with bioprinters, spent every day learning from brilliant graduate students, and experienced a totally different side of bioengineering through academic research.

After completion of the grant, she returned to Ethicon Endo-surgery to continue her rotational program where she is currently working in a new role on the Components Development team. Lucy’s plan is to finish her rotational program and stay in this role on the Development team until 2024. In the fall of 2024, she is planning to continue her education at Harvard Business School. In 2020, Lucy applied and was accepted to a special deferred admissions program at HBS called the 2+2 Program. This program is designed to attract STEM students who might not otherwise seek their MBA until much later in their careers. Through this program, Lucy will be allowed to work for 2-4 years before she matriculates to the school and obtains an MBA. As of now, Lucy is planning to stay in her role with Ethicon for the next three years before moving to Boston. She is not quite sure what she wants to do after she graduates from HBS, but we feel quite certain she will figure something out in the next three years!

Class of 1982

Class of 1958

The OCHS class of 1958 meets monthly for lunch. They too remain a close knit group of special classmates. This photo was taken in October as they gathered at Moonlite Bar-B-Q.

The class of 1982 is a special class indeed. When their class motto was selected, Friends Forever, they took it seriously. Bill James said the school even liked it so much they made the motto for the school year Friends Forever Together in Christ. Many of the class members gather annually for special trips and vacations. They remain close, nearly 40 years later.

Community Food Drive Putting Our Faith Into Action

The OCHS Student Council sponsored a community food drive to help the homeless and families in need. The Help Office of Owensboro requested certain items that they have a shortage of to supply to families. Students were asked to bring in different items each day! To generate excitement, competitions were held among each grade level and among home rooms with the senior class barely edging out the junior class in a very spirited battle for the grand prize of a class pizza party!

Over 9,000 items were collected on what the Help Office described as one of the largest school donations!

“We feel very blessed by the outpouring of donations we received from the students and families of Owensboro Catholic High School,” Angela Settle, Executive Director of the Help Office said. “The beauty of this particular drive was the school asked what additional items were needed, in addition to food. Cleaning supplies, personal hygiene items and toilet paper were also donated. These are expensive items OCHS supplied us with that we can provide to families who are just trying to put food on their tables.”
