Dear OCHS alumni and friends,

ON THE COVER Ring Mass tradition continues despite pandemic

Gray Weaver holds his crucifix and chain while Fr. Jason offers a blessing on articles brought to the Ring Mass.

How blessed are we to have your support - it is very much appreciated! As an OCHS graduate of the great class of 1981 and the Chief Administrative Officer of our school system, I see firsthand everyday the impact you are having in the lives of the students we educate. The many extras that are provided by your generosity, and frankly, even some of the basics, are vital to the Owensboro Catholic High experience.

In this craziest of years, we are faced with even more challenges than usual, with the necessity of face masks, hand sanitizer, disinfectant room foggers, plexi-glass desk shields, thermometers, gloves etc., so we can have in person school. But I believe you would agree that the Catholic High school experience is not something you can fully appreciate if you are not here in person each day.

for Future Generations at OCHS

As we approach the end of our annual OCHS Phonathon campaign, I am asking you for your financial help. Whatever your situation allows, know that we will steward those dollars to benefit the students that are here now and the ones that are to come.

To those of you who have already sent in a contribution, let me just say a very sincere thank you! In closing, Owensboro Catholic High School was a pivotal experience in my life, one that I carry with me everyday. Being grounded in my faith, sharing that experience with my friends, and having teachers who cared about me as a person as much as they did about me mastering the material, are all part of the Aces experience. Your kind generosity allows for this tradition to carry on in 2020 and beyond. In Jesus through Mary,

COVER STORY

Ring Mass under the stadium lights Despite the pandemic, the Class of 2021 experiences an important tradition By Gates Settle OCHS Principal

2020 continues to be an extremely challenging year for all, especially those here at Owensboro Catholic High School who are trying to make the very best out of an abnormal school year. Everything changed for OCHS on March 13th, when our school system transitioned to Non-Traditional Instruction. Even though we have returned to in school instruction, it is a very different year for our students and especially the seniors. Over the summer, we began meeting to discuss what the upcoming school year would look like and how it would differ from years past. We wanted to offer the many activities that make Catholic High so special to those who attend but we started running into all types of roadblocks that would prevent us from doing things like we had before. As the school year progressed, we saw that we were successfully enforcing our safety protocols and keeping our schools open. We felt for our students, especially seniors, who were missing out on some of Catholic High’s long held traditions. One sacred tradition we were concerned about missing was Ring Mass. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, we thought that seniors

may not like it if it wasn’t the way it had always been. However, our mindset completely changed after hearing comments from our seniors. They said, “We don’t care if we don’t get to do everything just like seniors have done in the past, we just want to do something!” After a lot of brainstorming, we decided that we could start out this year like no other class in OCHS history ever has; an outdoor Ring Mass under the stadium lights. Steele Stadium has been our “ACE” in the hole for other events as well because it meets COVID-19 guidelines. Just like many other things during this pandemic, we worked together to quickly plan an event for the Class of 2021 and their parents to come together for the first time. As always, Father Jason McClure had a great message. He complimented the Class of 2021 on their leadership and resilience to adjust and meet the challenges for us to stay in school. He referenced Philippians 2:3 about humbly regarding others as more important than ourselves which seems even more relevant today. Father Jason went on to talk about faith and “letting your actions speak so loudly that you don’t have to say anything.” All of this fit perfectly within the context of the times that these seniors are living through. He tied all of this change and uncertainty together with the one thing that we know never changes. That is our Lord Jesus Christ and that He is always with us through these times in our lives. This year has been drastically different from any other school beginning but, with these changes we remember our theme since the pandemic began; let us be mindful and thankful for all that we have, and try not to think about what we don’t get to do but to give thanks and appreciate all that we do get to do! ♠

Live Like Logan This year our students, especially our Seniors, have placed special emphasis on classmate Logan Davis who was taken from us too soon due to a one-vehicle car accident. Logan not only was a student revered by his classmates for his great faith but he was also a lineman for the OCHS football team and wore the number 68. Masks were made shortly after his passing to pay tribute to this remarkable young man. In memory of Logan we remember his prayer from his personal journal: My God, my God, I love you. I love you. There are no words I can use to express my wanting to be with you in heaven, the goal and our destiny. I’m ready whenever you call my spirit home, it’s yours. I ask that when you call me home that everyone will be happy, not sad, for they will know that we love them. Until this moment I’ll keep praying. I’ll keep loving you even if it’s tomorrow or a thousand years. Rest in peace our dear friend.

Senior Aaron Buckman with his parents, Kenny and Tricia Buckman, who presented him this watch to honor his friend.

y ll a R p e P As we mentioned in our cover story, nothing this year has been normal. But, we are making the best of it by thinking of alternative ways for students to enjoy some different types of activities. Part of what makes OCHS such a great school are all of the activities that are a part of the student experience such as the assemblies and pep rallies. With all the COVID-19 guidelines in place for us to stay in school, the entire student body had not been able to come together. On Friday, October 2nd, we were able to change that by having a school-wide assembly at Steele Stadium on the day of the football game against McLean County. Remaining compliant with the COVID-19 guidelines, we bussed our freshman and sophomores separately with windows down and masks on using every other seat. Our seniors and juniors were allowed to drive themselves over to the stadium. Masking and distancing rules were followed during the assembly and we were able to celebrate, have some fun, recognize students and be outside together! We remain thankful for what we are getting to do this school year, and we refuse to dwell on what we can’t.

PHONATHON 2020 Phonathon 2020 Donors to Date At this time of year, we like to send a proof list to our alumni and friends. This list was compiled on October 20, 2020. Faith in Education T-Shirts

The new 2020-2021 FIE Friday t-shirts have been released! These t-shirts have special symbolism that require an explanation. Designed by our Scrip Coordinator, Lisa Kyle – in her words she describes the meaning of these shirts: “I'd read the Latin phrase, "Pax Vobiscum" sometime in the last year or two, so as I tend to do, I looked it up. Meaning "Peace Be With You", I liked it, so I kept it in mind to use for a design. However, one negative thing is that it is confusing to pronounce - especially for the little ones. Last fall, it occurred to me to use instead, "Dona Nobis Pacem" (Grant Us Peace). In this chaotic year, it just feels like the right phrase at the right time.

What is so special about the Faith in Education shirts this year is the hidden symbolism. I used a dove, naturally, as the graphic. However, if you look at the dove's tail, it is the initials of Logan Davis (LAD). If you look at the branch the dove is holding, the two leaves on the bottom create the number 68, Logan's football number. This design was specially created for those who knew him!”
