Just by including the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy in your estate plans, you can help protect the beauty of Ojai for generations to come. A bequest is a simple way to support the OVLC in the future while retaining control of your assets during your lifetime. By making the OVLC a beneficiary of your will, trust, retirement plan, life insurance policy, or financial accounts, you ensure your values will be passed on after you.
The real beneficiary, of course, is Ojai.
The real beneficiary, of course, is Ojai.
FROM THE DIRECTOR

In her outstanding 2015 best seller The Invention of Nature, Andrea Wulf notes how in the late 1700’s Alexander von Humboldt identified the idea of human induced climate change and some of the first notions of what we now refer to as “natural capital” or “ecosystem services.” Of course, in those days, his observations were largely forgotten in the flurry of the amazing discoveries of the natural world.
Fast forward 200 years to the first Congressional hearings on climate change when climate scientists warned of worsening droughts, extreme heat, and more frequent and severe hurricanes and wildfires. With the extremes in weather globally, there can be little debate that these predictions have been borne out! While meaningful action on climate has been lacking, perhaps the fact that the predicted effects are now being felt first hand will inspire meaningful action from citizens and leaders?
Local conservation organizations like OVLC struggle with how to address the global phenomenon of climate change. What can a small group do to ameliorate threats that affect the very things that we are trying to save but are governed by global scale factors? The discussion can focus on mitigation versus adaptation and resilience. Mitigation comes in the form of investing in forests and other natural systems that effectively store carbon for hundreds of years. Adaptation and resilience measures seek to protect and enhance the local ecosystems in response to anticipated changes. Sometimes, the best approach is both.
While local land trusts will not solve the global climate crisis, the old adage “Think global, act local” provides a direction. As we live through drought and heat stresses from a changing climate,
more investments in our local natural capital are critically needed. Protecting and restoring land is a no regrets endeavor since the spectrum of benefits are so far reaching. Protecting and restoring the Ventura River will provide one of the best chances for the steelhead trout to thrive and also offer a place for solace from the heat. Working to protect the shady north-facing slopes of Sulphur Mountain will preserve a climate refuge for species like the endangered CA red-legged frog. OVLC’s work to restore oaks to the Ojai Meadows Preserve will enhance biodiversity and shade and cool the local environment.
To meet the challenges, we’re excited to have three new staffers join the team! In this newsletter we introduce Vivon Crawford, OVLC’s new Restoration Program Manager, who will be taking a more comprehensive approach to restoration in the Ojai Valley. We also welcome Lisa Nix to our field crew. She will be joining the team on the ground that makes these restoration efforts possible.
We’re also looking to grow and expand our opportunities to involve the community in our work. To that end, we’re thrilled to announce that Adam Morrison will be OVLC’s first Volunteer & Events Coordinator. Adam will restart our All About Ojai series of environmental walks and talks. We look forward to seeing you at one of these events and exploring these topics of resilience with you.
Thank you for your generous support—you make everything we do possible.

WELCOME NEW STAFF MEMBERS!

Vivon Crawford Restoration Program Manager
Vivon grew up in San Jose, California and moved to Santa Barbara for college. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and continued on to pursue a Master of Environmental Science and Management at the UCSB Bren School. In graduate school, Vivon was a Sustainable Water Markets Fellow and focused her studies on the economics and policies of water use in the Colorado River Basin. Since then, Vivon lived in Argentina and worked with the Wildlife Conservation Society to develop a drone-based wildlife monitoring pilot program. This work took her to remote reserves throughout Patagonia, where she would spend weeks in the field with researchers, ranchers, and park rangers surveying wildlife ranging from guanacos to sea lions. One of her favorite projects

was conducting annual drone surveys of nesting albatrosses and penguins in the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas).
As Restoration Program Manager, Vivon will be leading the charge on all aspects of restoration at OVLC. She will be expanding our restoration program and securing additional funding to continue current oak woodland, wetland, and riparian projects. Vivon has already jumped in headfirst, working with key stakeholders and private landowners to start the process of eradicating the 69-acres of giant reed ( Arundo donax) that remain in the Ventura River Watershed to date.
In her free time, Vivon loves going on road trips, pitching her tent under the stars, and tying flies on the river with her foxy Shiba Inu, Buta Mallin. Now that she is back in the Central Coast, Vivon is excited to explore the area and contribute to making the Ojai Valley more resilient and adaptable to today’s changing climate. If you see Vivon and her dog, Buta, on the trails, be sure to stop and say hi!
Adam Morrison Volunteer & Events Coordinator
Adam grew up in Wyoming and spent his childhood in the Big Horn Mountains. This instilled in him a love of the mountains and open spaces. He attended the University of Denver for a BA in Religious Studies after returning from a year-long youth exchange in Thailand. Throughout his academic career, he balanced his academic studies with work as a seasonal wildland firefighter, spending the better part of a decade working across the Mountain West for the BLM, USFS, and NPS. Adam moved with his wife Kate to California to pursue an MA and PhD in Religious Studies, completing the program in 2018 with a dissertation focused on nineteenth-century legal debates over the practice of polygamy. After three years in academic
administration, working on public humanities programs offered by UC Santa Barbara, the open spaces of Ojai called (and the commute was slowly killing him)!
As OVLC’s Volunteer and Events Coordinator, Adam will be the main point of contact for all of your volunteer needs. He’s also going to be rejuvenating the programs that were put on hold due to COVID-19. These programs include the All About Ojai speaker series, the docent program, donor parties, and field trips.
Keep an eye out for Adam at future OVLC and community events. He can also be found hanging out around town, coaching his kids’ soccer games on Saturdays, and hiking the trails with his wife and two kids, Waylon and Kally.
EVENTS COMING SOON!
CREATURE FEATURE
THE ROADRUNNER
Beep! Beep! You might know the greater roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus) from the classic Looney Tunes cartoon and how the character Road Runner always seems to run faster than Wile E. Coyote; but this isn’t the case in real life. In fact, coyotes can run up to 43 miles per hour, while the greater roadrunner clocks in at a top speed of 26 miles per hour. However, while a coyote can pose a serious threat, the greater roadrunner is agile and can escape its predators by weaving in and out of shrubs like a soccer superstar dribbling through the opposing team’s defense with ease. The greater roadrunner is also very well adapted to its environment. It is an opportunistic omnivore and is able to stay hydrated by absorbing water found in its prey. Its diet consists of insects, rodents, arthropods like scorpions, tarantulas, and centipedes. They also eat lizards, small mammals, fruit, seeds, snakes (including rattlesnakes), and it’s one of the few predators of the tarantula hawk. The greater roadrunner is a terrestrial bird, meaning it spends the majority of its time on the ground. While the greater roadrunner can fly, it typically only chooses to do so when escaping predators. Next time you’re out on the preserves, keep an eye out for this cunning beauty. You just might catch a glimpse of it before it darts off into the bushes.
IT’S UNBE LEAF ABLE!
It’s that time of year when the pinkish-white flowers of the California buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum) have turned into a gorgeous rust color. California buckwheat grows to be on average four feet tall, thrives in full sun, and practically doesn’t need soil to grow. Give it a pile of rocks and it will flourish! California buckwheat is fantastic for pollinators and attracts the likes of bees and butterflies. Birds and deer also love to browse the plant and eat the seeds. California buckwheat provides habitat for numerous wildlife and is an excellent choice to plant in your yard. The Chumash people utilize California buckwheat to treat fever, irregular menstruation, rheumatism, and stomach problems.

TRAMPLE TRAILS
HELP US PROTECT THESE LANDS FOR YOU
“You are not a cat. Do not let curiosity overwhelm your faculties.”
When out on OVLC preserves, please stay on our formal trails. You may have been told about a social trail, or noticed one that looks enticing. Please note that those are unsanctioned trample trails.
If you do take unsanctioned trample trails, your curiosity is making more work for OVLC’s stewardship staff and dedicated volunteers. In Ojai’s arid climate, heading off trail is most likely killing some fragile plants too. Perhaps you disturbed some sensitive wildlife habitat. What you definitely did not do, is help protect the very same natural environment you came to experience.
There are more and more unsanctioned trample trails popping up all over OVLC preserves, and they are a problem. Some of these trails (like the trample trail pictured to the right) are clearly there because trail users just have to know what is around the bend. You are not a cat. Do not let curiosity overwhelm your faculties. In this regard, we want to assure you, OVLC is not hiding a secret oasis or Garden of Eden. If there is a beautiful spot or stellar vista, we already guide you there!
Not sure what is the formal trail and what is an unsanctioned trample trail? There are maps at all trailheads and wooden sign posts with metal signs at every formal trail junction. Using these resources, you will know where you are, and where you aren’t supposed to trample.
Also, we know that shortcuts between switchbacks are enticing. However, with every new shortcut, there is a new spot for water to rush down and wear away solid built tread below, causing maintenance headaches and pulling resources away from improving other trails. Plus, where people trample off trail, beautiful wildflowers simply will not grow.
The trail networks on the various OVLC preserves are extensive and though the idea of more trail mileage might feel good at first blush, consider why you are out on the preserve. For many of our users, you likely visit a preserve to get away from the built environment. The most tangible sign of humankind in natural areas are trails. The more trails there are, the less immersive your natural experience. Slow down and enjoy that experience.

Don’t take short cuts. Perfect your map reading skills and use the formal trail junction signs to help you orient yourself in your surroundings. And please stay on formal trails and view untrampled areas from afar.
Please help us protect these lands for you. Please don’t make us protect them from you.

FROM THE FIELD
NEW BENCHES AT THE VENTURA RIVER PRESERVE
If you have visited the Ventura River Preserve in the last couple months, you may have noticed some new and enticing places to sit. Specifically, some fine, hand-crafted redwood benches. We’re at long last replacing benches lost in the Thomas Fire and installing new memorial benches too.
One reason we love these new benches is they are a local product! Local craftsman Ryan Lang sourced the wood from a redwood tree that was being taken down here in Ojai Valley. Ryan milled the wood and was storing it on his property when the Thomas Fire burned over the valley and singed some of the wood. It is fitting that some of the new benches carry burn scars, reminding us of the fire that led us to get new benches in the first place. Crafting these benches was a labor of love for Ryan.

Already, we’ve installed one bench in Rice Canyon, two in Wills Canyon, and one near the bridge on the Allan Jacobs Trail. A fifth bench will be going in on the ridge of the Allan Jacobs Trail in the coming weeks. These five benches represent over two tons of concrete, steel, and wood! Each bench requires a multi-day installation. Burned bench foundations must be removed, and the area prepped before a new bench can be placed. Then, at least one day is needed to dig out the base and pour concrete and another is needed to set the bench in place.
Getting the materials and tools to the job sites was a logistical and physical challenge. To do this, our Land Steward, Linda Wilkin, led and supported dozens of volunteers, who themselves have put in around 300 hours of labor to date.
It’s been challenging, but the volunteers are enjoying the experience, especially at the end when they can take a load off by sitting on the benches they installed!
We are proud to be able to replace our old benches, made of recycled plastic, with a real wood aesthetic. This far more natural appearance sits at ease in the surrounding beauty of the preserves. In time, as the remaining plastic benches need replacing, we’ll put in new wooden benches, providing even more enjoyable seating in beautiful places.

VOLUNTEER PROFILE
STUART NIEBEL — OVLC DOCENT
Stuart Niebel has been an Ojai Valley Land Conservancy (OVLC) docent since 2012, and has led dozens of tours on our preserves, including guiding hundreds of local school children. We hope you will consider becoming a docent too. Don’t worry if you think you don’t have the knowledge base – Stuart has created extensive docent manuals for the Valley View Preserve, Ventura River Preserve, and Ojai Meadows Preserve! We are proud to highlight Stuart’s contributions to the OVLC, in an interview he had with Land Steward, Linda Wilkin.
Hi, Stuart! Can you tell us a little about your background, and how you came to volunteer at the OVLC?
I spent 35 years as a firefighter, first in Carmel, and then in Ventura, where I worked for 30 years before retiring in 2012. Shortly after retiring, I showed up at the OVLC office and mentioned that I was interested in becoming a docent. While I had spent a lot of time on the land, I wasn’t an expert on the native plants and animals, nor on the OVLC’s restoration efforts. So, I asked if there were any books or literature that could help me become a docent. At the time, the OVLC didn’t have any standard docent manuals. Given my experience as a training officer in the fire department, this was the perfect project for me. To date, I have created three in-depth guides for the OVLC’s main preserves.
I used them when I was hired, so thank you! They were so helpful and informative! What does it mean to be a docent? What do you enjoy about being one?
A docent is a guide that knows about the history of the preserves, and is also knowledgeable about the plants and animals that can be found there. Their main job is to lead tours of the preserves, and relay their knowledge in a meaningful way. While we have some scheduled tours open to the public, we mainly set up tours with organizations and schools. For example, if a class goes on a field trip to the Ojai Meadows Preserve, we give them an overview about the importance of the preserve, including covering our restoration projects. However, if the students were studying a certain subject, we would focus on that specific subject. We’ve also given tours of the Ventura River Preserve and the Valley View Preserve.
I really enjoyed researching and creating the manuals. The manuals have a little information about everything, and then if

there is a subject you want to explore, you can expand on that subject. After I started the tour manuals, I realized we had to teach how to present these tours. We worked hard to make them engaging so that our audiences would participate and ask questions.
Who should become a docent?
Anyone who is motivated to learn and has a strong desire to educate people about environmental conservation, the history of the land, and the work OVLC is doing today should consider becoming a docent. There is definitely a lot to learn, but being a docent is an incredibly gratifying experience. I’ve gotten a lot of enjoyment out of it over the years, and it’s been fun to share what I’ve learned with preserve users and the community. And don’t worry – the OVLC will teach you what you need to know!
What are some things you enjoy the most about the different OVLC preserves?
The views from Valley View Preserve are incredible and I really love hiking up Wills Canyon at the Ventura River Preserve on a hot day because it’s nicely shaded. However, I really like the Ojai Meadows Preserve because of the restoration that’s taken place. The OVLC took land that had been used for ranching for decades, and turned it back into native habitat. It has been great to watch the transitions, even as they continue today.
They reconfigured the pond that used to be there, and as a result, bird counts went from less than 100 different species of birds before the pond was reestablished, to close to 183 species today! It has also been interesting to watch the various restoration plantings that have both thrived and to learn from those that have not been successful.
When I am giving a tour of the Ojai Meadows Preserve, I like to highlight the different plants that grow there other than coyote brush; like ceanothus, holly leaf cherry and lemonadeberry. Watching the nests at the Ojai Meadows Preserve is always exciting—especially when the red-tailed hawk nests become the owl nests. It’s always fun to watch and anticipate how many babies they might have.
What does it mean to be a steward of our preserves when you use them?
I like to encourage people to steward the land. If you bring trash in, you take the trash out. We’ve always had a hard time with people not picking up after their dogs, or keeping them on a leash. We’ve also had a hard time with graffiti and trash. If you see trash, please pick it up! I always have a little pack on and I pick up trash as I go.
All the little actions really add up! What can visitors of OVLC’s preserves do to help protect and preserve these lands?
Visitors can stay on the official trails. They can pick up trash if they see it. Visitors should also give wildlife space, and do everything in their power to avoid stepping on plants.
One thing I’ve learned from being a docent and learning about wildlife and habitat is that most animals prefer to eat native plants. There’s a long evolutionary process that connects California native plants and the living species that call it home. There is a harmony between the two.

This is really important because many native plants are disappearing as people plant non-native plants in their gardens. As a result, wildlife in the area are suffering. Our yards can be native plant corridors through residential neighborhoods. I have transformed my yard into a native garden and it is nice to see the birds, butterflies, and insects enjoying my garden. I am currently growing narrow leaf milkweed, Asclepias fascicularis, in my yard. This food source will help the monarch butterfly with their migration. While we have a lot of milkweed growing at the Ojai Meadows Preserve, you can help the monarchs by planting some milkweed in your garden too.
Why volunteer with OVLC?
It’s your backyard! It’s right here in town and OVLC is a great organization with great people! Talking to the staff is a great resource. It’s nice to be able to talk to someone who’s an expert and learn more about what makes Ojai’s open spaces so special.
FAREWELL TO CAITLYN BARRERA
In August, we said farewell to Caitlyn Barrera. Caitlyn parted ways with OVLC to pursue a Master of Public Administration with a focus on non-profit management from University of Washington’s Evans School of Public Policy & Governance. During her two years at OVLC, Caitlyn worked her way up the tree, starting as Restoration Field Crew and ending her term as Restoration Program Manager. Caitlyn brought a lot to the table and we are incredibly grateful for everything she did during her time with us. She wrote the new mitigation/restoration plan for the Ojai Meadows Preserve and secured additional funding for those projects. The next time you read the “Creature Feature” and “Unbeleafable” sections of our quarterly newsletter, you can thank Caitlyn for those additions too. We wish Caitlyn nothing but the best in her future endeavors. Good luck and thank you for everything, Caitlyn!
2021 FISCAL YEAR* ANNUAL REPORT
* FY 2021: July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2021

June 30, 2021 marked the end of our first full fiscal year since we changed our fiscal year to start in July. OVLC also restructured our accounting and simplified our chart of accounts. As a result, the staff and board have a deeper understanding of the role that each program plays in OVLC’s financial condition. In particular, these changes provide comprehensive insights into the costs of stewarding the preserves, and help OVLC plan for new acquisitions and budget for preserve improvements.
The final fiscal year numbers are currently being prepared by the auditors. The final report will be posted at ovlc.org/financials when it is completed.
Until then, some highlights of our 2021 fiscal year (ending June 30, 2021) have been:
• OVLC kept its preserves open during the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on the many testimonials we received, it is clear that having the preserves as a place for solace in a crazy year was deeply appreciated by the community.
• OVLC engaged in mediation with Southern California Edison and, after lengthy discussions, agreed to a fair settlement for the damages incurred in the Thomas Fire. OVLC continues its recovery with an eye towards the long term stewardship of our preserves.
• The Rice Canyon Bridge on the Ventura River Preserve over the Casitas canal was completed after burning in the Thomas Fire.
• The Allan Jacobs bridge on the Ventura River Preserve was also completed (with the help of many volunteers!).
• OVLC received a grant from the State of California for $168,000 for the Besant Meadow Bridge project.
• The Green Valley Project launched with several partners to cultivate the conservation leaders of tomorrow by providing ecological restoration opportunities for high schoolers today.
• The Volunteer Adopter Program was launched, where volunteers have stepped into leadership positions to help OVLC maintain restoration sites and trails.
As our new fiscal year is already underway, we look forward to keeping you apprised of the great things we have planned this year including acquisitions, new staff positions, a nursery expansion, and new programs. Again, our audited financial statements will be posted in the coming weeks at ovlc.org/financials

WELCOME, LISA!

Lisa Nix
Restoration Field Crew
Born and raised in California, Lisa grew up spending much of her time exploring the Santa Ynez Mountains and learning about the native flora and fauna. Her love for nature has led to a passion for regenerative agriculture and land stewardship. Lisa has studied plant ecology in relationship to fungi and is continuing her education in mycology. In her free time you will find her foraging for invasive species and hiking the local trails with her dog, Bee. Lisa looks forward to being a part of restoring native species and taking part in land preservation for the community and the future of the Ojai Valley!

THE SEED COLLECTOR
There are many lessons learned when the days are spent with plant and animal folk—a literacy of some ancient hum that this unseasoned human must learn. On the fall day before rain this early October—unbeknownst to me—the acorns were ready. Yet, the emissaries of summer hunger showed this humble seed collector the true rhyme and reason of the land. Scrub jays darted between branches. Their beaks filled with green oak offspring, ready to plant thousands of acorns this season. The crew and I watched them plant in our restoration fields. Later that day, deer were feasting on the gleanings of scrub jay frenzy, then us, participating in the fall harvest of ancient rings.

The acorns from Coast Live Oak, Quercus agrifolia, are to be planted in sites (by us, not birds) across the Ojai Valley, along with other collections of 71 species and counting of local native plants. The community of OVLC is fostering the collecting, processing, growing, and planting of these seeds. Lessons are learned by trial, error, and the meticulous eyes of a student. We hope that this gift of seeds is an investment for the future. If fire hits again, we may plant seeds saved. Those fields of acorns, turned into oak woodlands, are for the love of our children’s children.
The wind that carries jay wings, seed plume, and our breath knows no boundaries. We are stewards of this valley, plant and animal folk alike.

A matching gift means your contribution will go twice as far. Many companies will double (or sometimes triple) the value of their employees’ gifts to the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy. These matching gifts provide valuable funds as we work to protect the views, trails, water, and wildlife of the Ojai Valley. Some companies will even match your gifts after you retire.
To see if your company will match a gift to the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy, contact your company’s human resources department. TAKE ADVANTAGE of your employer’s matching gift program.
