Looking Back, Looking Ahead
As I’ve said before, paraphrasing John Sawhill, in the end this Ojai community will be defined not by what it creates, but by what it refuses to destroy. In 2013, you said that our backyard was worth saving. You said the scenic, mountainous backdrop of the community was important. You said our community is a nicer place to live if we have spectacular hiking opportunities walking distance from our homes. And you all stepped up to create the Valley View Preserve. The best part? It is forever. It will never go away.
We’re not done with Valley View yet. The clean-up of decades of debris continues, but we’re nearly finished. Rick and his fearless volunteer trail crew are putting in a new trail to connect Shelf Road to the Foothill Trail on the eastern side of the preserve, creating another trail loop.
Dozens, if not hundreds of times, I’ve been told how marvelous the Valley View Preserve and the Fox Canyon Trail are. It is not uncommon for this statement to be followed by a question: What’s next? We are always chasing about ten new projects at any given time, and 2014 will be no exception. This is in addition to habitat restoration projects that will be occurring simultaneously on four different preserves in 2014—that could be a record for us.

OMP Bio-Swale
Visitors to the Ojai Meadows Preserve may have see an unusual sight. That is when a soil drilling rig appeared on the back of the preserve near the intersection of South Lomita Avenue and Besant Road. The purpose of the rig was not to drill for oil or water. Rather, this was a routine test of soil properties in advance of a proposed project that would help clean local storm water.
We have partnered with the Ventura County Watershed Protection District (VCWPD) on a grant proposal which would fund construction of a new bio-swale on a portion of the preserve. What is a bio-swale you might ask?
A bio-swale is a shallow depression that collects and carries storm water drainage, then uses natural vegetation and soil properties to clean the water. This proposed project would intercept an existing community storm drain and allow the water to pass through a shallow channel on the preserve before re-entering the storm drain. Native vegetation planted in the swale will help consume pollutants such as excess nutrients, and soil bacteria can decompose oil products found in percolating water. Another important project benefit will be intercepting water during the normally dry months when most of the water comes from urban uses, and is often polluted. This water will be retained and treated on site by the swale, before it can make it back into the storm drain network.
This project represents a pilot project that will demonstrate how these swales can be managed throughout the Ventura River drainage to protect and enhance water quality. Before constructing the project, soil properties

• 195 acres were permanently protected as publicly accessible open space in June 2013, with the acquisition of the Valley View Preserve.
• The Fox Canyon Trail opened on the Valley View Preserve—approximately 1.25 miles up an 800 vertical foot climb connecting to the Pratt, Foothill, and Fuelbreak trails.
• The historic Foothill Trail was reopened on the Valley View Preserve.
• Roughly 1,000 school kids participated in educational programs on our preserves.
• Over 7,000 native plants and 1,000’s of native grass plugs were planted this year on the preserves.
• 206 new members joined OVLC in our 2013 Fiscal Year.

Finding Your Deepest Values and Priorities
The other night we took in a perfect Ojai sunset from Wilson’s Point, a hill above Shelf Road. Having the view all to ourselves, we sat on the bench watching the sky perform its tricks—the clouds dancing through a rainbow of pinks, purples, oranges, and fiery reds.
A few days later, I was out again and heading up Fox Canyon Trail. Breathing in the cool, crisp morning air, stopping here and there to take in the sweeping views of the valley as I caught my breath. I thought—how lucky are we that this is our backyard?
Take a deep breath and remember the last time you wandered out of town and into the hills to find that perfect, remote spot where you could just simply be? Breathe in the fresh air, hear the birds around you, take in the mountain views, and feel the peacefulness in your surroundings.
Where is this favorite place of yours? Under the ancient coast live oaks in Wills Canyon? Early in the morning, feeling the cool, crisp air while taking in the views offered by the Valley View Preserve? Cooling off your feet in the Ventura River? Perhaps a pink moment all to yourself reflected in the pond at the Ojai Meadows Preserve?
Land conservation work is about ensuring moments like these are still possible for many generations to come.

are studied to assess the permeability of the soil and the biological functions present in the soil. These are important first steps in assessing project feasibility and informing the design process. It is these properties that will be assessed with the upcoming sampling.
Regular visitors to the Ojai Meadows Preserve already know that much of the site is already used as a natural flood water retention project, and that much of the bird diversity and natural productivity on the preserve is a result of the creation of the wetlands. This proposed project adds variety to the approaches used at the preserve and will likely contribute to the growing diversity of habitats throughout the preserve.
The project is being proposed for grant funding from the State Water Resources Control Board, and project construction would be managed by the VCWPD. The Ojai Valley Land Conservancy will assist with revegetation of the site and supplying plants from our on-site nursery. If successful, we will be able to show just one more way a community can address storm water quality improvement while increasing habitats for birds and other wildlife.
