She works to protect and restore iconic wildlife populations, including North American black and grizzly bears.

But when the wild lands of their habitat are crisscrossed by roads, fences and ranches, how can bears and humans coexist peacefully?

Dr. Wynn-Grant intends to find the answer.

Everybody’s Hero: The Jackie Robinson Story WED, FEB 3 & THU, FEB 4, 2021 10 AM & 12:30 PM Capitol Theater It was no accident that Jackie Robinson was chosen as the first ballplayer to break the color barrier in the sport known as America’s pastime. This new play shows the events that shaped Robinson’s character, his struggle to gain acceptance and the tremendous obstacles he overcame on his way to changing the face of our nation and our national pastime. Together they go on an amazing journey, brought vividly to life through live music, storytelling and lots of laughs.

Produced by the Bay Area Children’s Theatre and the Rose Performing Arts Center.

In this heartwarming musical based off the classic book by Jeff Brown, 10-year-old Stanley Lambchop wants to travel the world. When he wakes up flat one morning, his wish for adventure is granted because now “Flat Stanley” can mail himself all around the world. In a whirlwind travelogue, Stanley—the ultimate exchange student—explores the globe, visiting Hollywood, Paris and Honolulu. Produced by Dallas Children’s Theater.

Cultural Literacy Through Historical Portraits Artist: Araceli Esparza Art Form: Visual Arts Academic Focus: Social Studies This Historical Portraits residency teaches about notable Native Americans, African Americans and Latinos who have shaped our country.

Students will examine portraits of historical figures using visual art and historical lenses to gain insight into their leadership and character.

Students will enhance their academic understanding in this engaging process by creating each component of systems using their bodies and voices. This workshop is adaptable to your current curriculum needs.

Celebrating Diversity Through the Origins of Rock and Roll

The discarded and overlooked items that fill our world are rich with potential as we use imagination and innovation to discover treasure in the most ordinary places. Using items from recycling bins and thrift stores, students will go through a design process of imagining, sketching and brainstorming to dismantle and combine materials to create collaborative sculptures and stories, while inspiring new ways of imagining how we inhabit our neighborhood and world.

Rock and roll music was born out of America’s rich diversity. While learning about the original rock and rollers of the 1950s and the music and cultures that influenced them, your students will recognize their diversity as an asset to our society and learn how a society that celebrates diversity created the great music of rock and roll.

They then think like a theater artist and communicate what they have learned by performing original pieces for one another, other classrooms or parents.

Walking in Another’s Shoes: Using the Actor’s Tools to Create Characters and Understand Others

Imagination Vacations: Destressing Writing and the Classroom with Mindful Music Description

Students will strengthen empathy as they discover and embody the motivations and responses of characters who are not like themselves. Using the actor’s tools, students will think more deeply about the unseen elements of character and improvise short scenes using characters of their own creation or those found in a work being used in the classroom.

Students will learn music listening strategies to calm the body, focus the mind and provide a framework for successful writing. This wellness consultant, cellist and MMSD arts educator brings 25 years of expertise to inspire students’ confidence and creativity while providing a solid structure to guide writing. Students build skills that direct creation of their own journals.

Shape your students’ appreciation of geometry through its aesthetic application in the traditional art and craft of quilt piecing. Students manipulate paper and fabric to discover relationships between geometry, design and construction using concepts like angles, symmetry, congruence, concavity and order of operations.

In this residency, your students bring Earth’s habitats to life by animating the animals interacting in their home surroundings and unique environments. Time Travel Through History with Theater Artist: Danielle Dresden This workshop shows teachers how they can use theatrical techniques to stimulate students’ imagination and promote deeper learning. The session covers the actor’s tools and concentrates on the theatrical concepts of character and dramatic conflict to help students forge a deeper connection with the past. Through individual work with “MadLibs for Characters,” group brainstorming and “theater buddies,” participants will learn how to guide their students through the process of creating a scene and bringing history to life. This session uses immigration to Wisconsin as our subject matter, but the techniques it covers can be adapted to cover any historical period or aspect of social studies.

Rhythms of History: Exploring Cultural Heritage Through Movement Artist: Donna Peckett We will use the elements of dance and dramatic movement to examine our cultural backgrounds. This three-hour session focuses on the basic qualities of dance and movement, the concepts of rhythm and tempo and how to create dramatic movement combinations to bring to life your cultural heritage.

Using an understanding of the elements of dance, participants will collaboratively explore their cultural backgrounds and construct a movement vignette, gaining an appreciation for different cultures and how to use the arts to effectively understand history and culture.

Common Denominators: Understanding Unit Fractions Through Hip-Hop Production Artist: Pacal “DJ Pain 1” Bayley Popular music is known for being catchy, but it is also highly mathematical. Exploring the relationship between math and music reinforces foundational mathematical concepts. In this workshop, teachers will learn how to have students analyze mathematical patterns and unit fractions by listening to their favorite music and by creating original rhythms. Educators will leave prepared to lead adaptable lessons during which students will hear and share their original rhythms as audio tracks.

Playing Together (Part 2): Theater Games to Develop Empathy and Cooperation Artist: Terry Kerr In this follow-up workshop to Acting on Impulse, teachers will dive deep into using character work to develop empathy and cooperation. The actor imagines other lives and worlds.

This workshop shares games and exercises that teachers can incorporate in classroom activities to develop student empathy and cooperative behavior. Playing Together can be a follow-up to Acting on Impulse or can stand alone.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO PERFORM

Disney Musicals in Schools Overture Center for the Arts is excited to continue working with Disney Theatrical Group to bring Disney Musicals in Schools to the Madison area. Disney Musicals in Schools is a national program developed by Disney Theatrical Group in New York City in 2009 and was established to create sustainable theater programs in urban elementary schools. Our goal for the program is to create sustainable musical theater programs in elementary schools by providing schools with the training and tools necessary to do so, and to share their students’ success.

Up to four elementary schools may join the program each year.

A team of Overture’s teaching artists guide teachers through the process of mounting a musical, starring student performers in grades 3-5, over the course of 17 weeks. The residency culminates in a 30-minute Disney KIDS Musical at each school. In March, students are invited to the Student Share to perform a number at Overture Center and enjoy workshops with touring productions. After a successful first year, schools are invited to continue the program as alumni and receive ongoing scaffolding support.

Overture’s Rising Stars Overture’s Rising Stars is a statewide program aimed to discover, develop and celebrate the wealth of talent in our communities.

Auditions will be held at multiple statewide locations, each with a panel of local celebrity judges. Acts selected from the preliminary auditions will be

invited to The Callback on SAT, AUG 15. The Workshop on SAT, AUG 29 will give those moving on another opportunity to perform and receive constructive feedback from industry professionals before they put it all on the line at The Finals at Overture on SAT, SEP 19. The finalists will come together on the historic Capitol Theater stage

to perform for the community, win cash prizes, be seen by talent buyers and more! Plus, one grand prize winner will be awarded $1,000, a digital marketing consultation and the opportunity to perform during the 2021/22 season!

Jerry Awards High School Musical Theater Program

Jimmy Awards National High School Musical Theater Awards

This educational initiative encourages, recognizes and honors excellence in high school musical theater. Industry professionals review productions at each participating high school and submit comprehensive written critiques with nominations for awards in categories including performance, direction and design. In June, an awards show is held at Overture Center and features performances by award recipients. Each year, approximately 500 students participate in the show from the 90+ productions adjudicated. We are pleased to partner with the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, The Grand Theater and Viterbo University, and are proud to be included in Wisconsin Public Television’s Young Performer’s Initiative, celebrating Wisconsin’s young artists and those who inspire them.

Each year two Outstanding Lead Performer Award recipients are selected to represent the awards at The Jimmy Awards.

The 10-day experience in New York City includes training with Broadway professionals and their Broadway debut.

Performance Ensembles

Student Critics High school students interested in journalism, writing and theater are encouraged to apply for the Student Critics Program led by Lindsay Christians of The Capital Times. The program aims to foster critical thinking and journalistic writing skills. Participating students attend and review a selection of touring Broadway musicals at Overture Center, with additional opportunities to review opera, classical music and dance performances.

Students at schools participating in the high school musical awards program are eligible to audition for one of two premier performance groups: the Southern Wisconsin Ensemble or the Central Wisconsin Ensemble.

The Southern Wisconsin Ensemble performs at various events at Overture Center and the Central Wisconsin Ensemble is featured at events at The Grand Theater in Wausau.
